Are you named after anyone? from what I'm told, my mother was going through a french phase and loved the name jacqueline so, here I be! though extra lore nobody asked for: because it's got so many letters, I typically go by jacqui unless it's a ~fancy official thing or I'm in trouble, hah

When was the last time you cried? it would probably be easier to ask me when I'm not crying (anxiety club cardholder)

Do you have kids? nada! I am not parental material, but I do enjoy being the fun cool aunt to three nephews

What sports do you play/have you played? uh, bench warmer if we're being literal about it I don't think I was ever picked for a team willingly a day in my life I am both short and require glasses to see anything long distance - but! I was more interested in drama and books anyway so y'know battles, pick 'em.

Do you use sarcasm? frequently and with flourish!

What’s the first thing you notice about people? I'm actually a big one for vibes, I tend to gravitate toward the folks who put out the chill, easy going vibes. I'm very cerebral by nature, I live in my head so anybody who wants or digs conversations is also a big drawcard for me, I dunno! I like nice people who are funny and a bit different and aren't terribly concerned about what the masses are doing (idk hashtag just aquarius things I suppose) but also - hands! love expressive talkers, love hands. People with big smiles and the ability to poke a bit of good natured fun at themselves and the craziness of the world.

Scary movies or happy endings? oh ya girl is a sap so give me a happy ending every time, although points if it's a scary movie with some sort of happy(ish) ending

Not as many books this month! And not just because February has fewer days, I was really in a funk this month and struggling to pay attention to my audiobooks (and enjoy them). You wouldn't think there's such a thing as too many books, but I think the overtime hours at work are hitting their peak mental health destruction. Here's to hoping things improve in March!

The Divorce Colony (4.5 stars) - genuinely can't believe this was my 3rd nonfic of the year already! I picked a print copy of this up at a library sale in December after hearing about divorce colonies in the early 20th century on a recent episode of the 99% Invisible podcast. Turns out this book was actually about the beginning of the moment that took place in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the 1800's. Western states had shorter residency periods and less strict divorce laws, so women (and the occasional man) would travel west and live there for several months in order to obtain a divorce. This book tracks the movement through the stories of 4 of the more infamous cases to make the papers, and does an incredible job of weaving in the surrounding political and religious discussions. Would recommend, and has a great cover to boot!

Renegades (3 stars) - a reread, and for some reason it was torture. I originally read this back in 2018 and loved it, and wanted to tackle it again and actually finish the rest of the series. But I kept getting worked up and frustrated this time around! It kept trying to take itself seriously while also being very YA and kind of superhero-camp, and I was absolutely overthinking it lol. I found the strength to press on into book two, Archenemies (3.5 stars). I liked it a bit more! Something about it being new, the story being a bit more settled and maybe getting a better grasp on its message/politics, the characters growing more, me figuring out that I shouldn't listen to the audiobook for more than an hour or so at a time, lmao. Not great, but fun, and possibly worth reading? I'll keep y'all updated when I finish book 3.

Hula (5 stars) - incredible. Part generational family story, part history, part discussion of what it means to be Hawaiian, culturally and legally. Not always the easiest of reads, but it was so so worth it. It was also doing something very interesting with parts of the narration voiced by a collective "we" (culture/community?) that I would love to get a look at in print. Highly recommend, I'll definitely be getting myself a copy.

Something Close to Magic (4.5 stars) - an absolute delight! The Gail Carson Levine comp on this one is not entirely unearned, anyone who's a fan of fairy tale type fantasies will enjoy this, I had a great time! Very interestingly, it has characters who are in their mid to late teens, but is written in a way where they're still allowed to be young, to the point I'm surprised it didn't get shoehorned into MG instead of YA. If the author writes any more of these I'd be happy to read them.

Crying in H Mart (3.5 stars) - nonfic number 4! I'm sure everyone's heard of this one by now, which is why I finally picked it up. It's fine (which is why it got an extra .5 star), but on the scale of take it or leave it, I'd leave it. It just wasn't for me and I kind of wish I'd dnf'd it. A great cover though.

Lud-in-the-Mist (3.5 stars) - this one seems to be considered a sort of early precursor to fantasy and fairy tale type stories from the early 20th century, and I was eager to try it! While I definitely don't think it would feel out of place amongst it's more recent fellows (think the Last Unicorn, Robin McKinley, DWJ, etc), I absolutely could not get into it. Probably the chief recipient of "my brain doesn't want to cooperate, sorry," so maybe I'll give it another shot someday.

A Sinister Revenge (4 stars) - enjoyable as always! Not to hide this deep in my reviews or anything, but have the Emily Wilde people tried Veronica Speedwell yet?

Pip Bartlett's Guide to Magical Creatures (3 stars) - This one's been sitting unread on my shelf for a while, and since I was on a bit of a Maggie Stiefvater run, I figured it was perfect! Well. Unless you are like 7, this was so bad. Not good. Having previously read and not liked a book by Maggie's co-author Jackson Pearce, I think it would not be unreasonable for me to assume she did most of the writing while Maggie did the illustrations - if the audiobook had been any longer than 4 hours I'd have absolutely DNF'd it, and I have no intention of continuing the series.

Moby Dyke: An Obsessive Quest to Track Down the Last Remaining Lesbian Bars in the Country (4.5 stars) - part of me was wondering what I was doing trying this lol, not being someone who drinks or goes to bars, OR, as previously mentioned, is not the biggest fan of memoirs. It was not, as I hoped, also part research project, but it is a travelogue, and as a consequence has a strong narrative thread. It also has a lot of discussions about issues in the LGBTQ+ community, and overall I really liked it once I figured out what it was doing!

Pixels of You (3.5 stars) - a very short sapphic rivals-to friends-to lovers graphic novel about a human-form AI and a human with an android eye competing for a photography internship at an art gallery. The creators clearly put SO much thought into their characters and worldbuilding, but sadly there is nowhere near enough length here to do it all justice, and a number of elements felt very odd or under explored. The relationship parts are great! I just think this needed to be twice as long to really given everything its due, or maybe explored in prose instead.

The Memory Librarian (3.5 stars) - to start, I know nothing about the musical album this is related to, so I don't know how much that might have affected my reading. Overall I wasn't super impressed - when I discovered that the first story was cowritten by Alaya Dawn Johnson - no shade to her - I almost dropped it then, I just really didn't like her writing style in the one book I've read. But I stuck through it. Of the five stories, only one really stuck in my mind - Nevermind, cowritten by Danny Lore, which I could have read an entire novel about. I wish I could recommend it on its own, but overall I just don't quite understand the world Monae has created.

The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years (3.5 stars) - I probably should say more about the book, it was fine, I was surprised to find that it's set in relatively current day, I found myself a lot more interested in the second narrative about the house's history, which did make me cry a bit. Mostly though, I really just want to let you know how MUCH of a non-entity the djinn was in this story, I have no idea why it was there and why it was included in the title of the book. All the author had to do was make the house a little more sentient and haunted and it would be fine, idk. Read it if you want, but it's not one I would rec.

DNF'S

Foundryside - I was so ready. I had the first two audiobooks checked out, I had the third one on hold. I started this but oh, the writing. bleh. I was looking thought reviews and someone referred to it as something like "21st century internet speak." In a high fantasy novel. I noped out at just 10%.

Earthlings - I've considered the author's other book before but haven't read it, but thought maybe a sci-fic book would work better for me? The beginning was odd but not uninteresting, and I might have continued if it had stayed that way. But then the main character was in school(?) and her teacher started getting handsy after class and I wasn't invested enough to stick it out.

A Far Wilder Magic - the success of Something Close to Magic made me a little too hopeful I think, bc while I'm still a little leery around YA, I know people have liked this. And it sounded interesting, truly, and I love the cover. But first it was the religion stuff. And I didn't really like the characters. Then it's like, oh, this is the same plot as The Scorpio Races, but nowhere near it's quality in any shape or form. I decided to stop while I was ahead, before I started to actually dislike it. (anyway here's your PSA to go read The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, I recommend doing it in October if you can).

I have a few birthday imagines that go round my head all the time. The first one being that reader has a 'normal' job, and Matty is in the band. It's coming up to his first birthday as a couple and she starts freaking out because what do you get someone who is able to afford anything he wants to buy. Anyway maybe in the end she makes him something? It would be all about the sentiment with Matty I think, so either something personal/homemade or maybe she plans a day for them doing all of his favourite things :)

Equally when it gets to readers birthday, Matty wants to buy her everything she's ever shown a slight interest in but he also doesn't want to overwhelm her, especially as she keeps reminding him not to go over the top. Maybe he remembers reader completing Charli's perfume one time so he sneakily asks her what fragrance it is then buys it for her. And I like to imagine he'd take her for a fancy meal out aswell, somewhere better than she's ever been before, maybe a fine dining restaurant.

like you said, the man has enough money to get whatever he might want or need, so it's a total struggle to buy him a gift, especially because you're somewhat more financially limited than matty - he's hyper-aware of that though, and of the fact his taste is so diverse that planning a gift for him could be overwhelming, so he's very like "you don't need to get me anything, sweetheart, all i want and need is to spend the day with you". and that's cute, it really is, but you'll be damned if you're going to let your boyfriend's birthday go without a gift from you. and again like you said, i think matty would so appreciate sentiment over monetary value, being gifted something personal. i'm obsessed with the idea of you and matty having your own little book club, where you take turns to pick a book then read it independently and discuss it over some wine (and a joint, if that's your thing), and i think you'd maybe do gifts relating to that - you're always ranting at matty for dog-earing the pages of his books to mark his place, so maybe you get some bookmarks made up of your favourite pictures of the two of you and put them in his gift. matty's also the type of boyfriend who's just obsessed with hearing your thoughts at every second of every day (i fully believe he's the type to be like "so what are you thinking rn" at like 3am when you're trying to get to sleep lol), so you gift him your fully annotated copies of the books he's recommended thus far for your little book club (with little dedications to him at the start of each one), and that way he can spend hours reading the little scribbles verbatim from your thoughts about something he's personally recommended to you because he thought you'd like it :((( you put those in a gift bag with a lovely bottle of wine and a bunch of flowers and some chocolate (and maybe a little bag of weed too lmao), and you bake him a birthday cake, and head over to his house on the morning of april 8th. and matty's so happy to see you on his special day, and also slightly exasperated about the fact you got him a gift when he told you it was unnecessary - you shut him up with a kiss and tell him to open it. he's touched when he sees the homebaked cake, impressed when he sees the wine and chocolate, giggly at the weed, blushy at the flowers, and deeply overwhelmed and emotional at the literary gift. matty's a little confused at the books ("they're the ones i chose for us to read?") at first, until you tell him to open them. when he picks up the first one, one of the bookmarks falls out of the front cover, which sets him off already because "that picture of us is so cute. like look how pretty you are"" (which makes you blushy), and then when he flicks through the pages and sees your annotations he fully cries like "i'm getting little glimpses into your brain oh my god i fucking love this i love you i love the way your brain works" (then because she goes vibes actually). and that's just on the first book! matty gets so much more emotional with every book he picks up - he insists on doing this even though you tell him its the same idea for each - and you physically have to climb onto his lap and hold his hands to stop him just sitting and reading them for the whole day. but yeah - lots of teary kisses from matty, telling you this is the best gift he's ever gotten and he's so grateful and he just loves you so much and you're the most brilliant and beautiful and kindest person he knows, before he pulls himself together and you guys have the loveliest day.

and yeah, matty would be a bit of a nightmare on the lead-up to your birthday - he spoils you at the best of times (when you let him), simply because he's a simp (lol) and he loves you and wants to treat you well, but you make a point of sitting him down and looking him dead in the eye to tell him to keep the gifting lowkey. and it's hard for matty to not immediately pull out the credit card as soon as you offhandedly mention you like the look of something you saw advertised or walked past in a shop; you notice this about him quite quickly, so i think you'd drop subtle (and not-so subtle) hints about what you really wanted for a good while before your birthday. going with perfume, mentioned in the ask - while you're out for george's birthday, you really loudly compliment charli's perfume while matty's in earshot, like "i'm almost out of my favourite one, i'll need to buy more soon haha!", and matty hears and he's like "ooh i could get her some for her birthday!". and he makes a point of looking in your room to see which one you wear, but you have a couple on rotation and he has no idea which one you mean - matty's undeterred, though, because it means he has an excuse to come up and kiss your neck as you're getting ready for dates like "god, you smell amazing. what perfume is that?" and you're like fuck yeah he's got the hint "it's a dior one!" and tell him the name. on your birthday, you're surprised when matty hands you a dior-embossed envelope rather than a gift bag, and ready to yell at him when he says "look, sweetheart, i know this is a bit more money than you're probably cool with having spent on you, but i think it's something you'll love" - you open it to see an invitation to their selfridges boutique for a vip fragrance creation session, aka you getting to create your own personalised perfume. and while yeah you're utterly aghast at how much this is probably costing matty (he will not say), a) he looks so excited to be gifting you this opportunity, b) the thought of creating your own perfume with the brand you wear daily has you GIDDY, and c) it's actually a very thoughtful gift and you know fine well a single bottle of dior collection privee fragrances can last for a decade because they're so pure, meaning it's actually economical of you to do this, so you don't complain. instead, you give your boyfriend a big kiss and say "this is incredible. thank you so much. i love you!", and matty exhales and reciprocates the affection. and you both have a lot of fun at the dior boutique while you create your own scent, and also in matty's bedroom when you head back to his after dinner (which was in the literal fanciest place of all time, it was incredible), because the perfume you've come up with is so irresistible to matty that he actually cannot keep his hands off you at all (another bonus of that gift) lol <3

CBS Ghosts - Baby Ghost Teasing for Trevor

CBS Ghosts - Pilot. Spoilers may be present.

The second scene we see of the ghosts is Trevor telling some story about his party days.  It’s quite the change from the solumn Trevor we see in the first scene.  It’s interesting to see the difference between his first and second scene - it’s also interesting to see the responses to Trevor’s story over the plan for Thor’s Cod Lecture.  

LMAO - Trevor is so performative. He's all excited. He's ready for making every enjoy his story and make everyone happy after the loss of Sophie.

Also, how cute is that bow? I love that.

LMAO - Hetty asking about Tara Reid, clearly she's a little invested, and Trevor's like 'how do you not know this?' - I'm surprised he hasn't info dumped on his favorite movies.

LMAO - the byplay here - Alberta teasing him about the kind of movie, Isaac asking what a movie is, again. Which means HE'S DEFINITELY EXPLAINED THIS BEFORE.

This is too funny. Trevor attempting to show what a movie is with his hands will never not make me laugh. Like he WANTS them to learn with him and tries to explain, meanwhile, Alberta, Crash, Flower and Pete definitely know what this is and just... don't help. Alberta makes it worse by teasing, and it's just so funny that the older ghosts are CLEARLY messing with him.

Especially, Sass....

Oh, boy. Trevor's not having it. He's tired of being heckled by the older ghosts - and literally is ALL of the older ghosts doing it.

First, Hetty, then Alberta, Isaac, Sass and finally Thor. He's just 'damn it, I hate being the youngest'. I feel you Trevor.

Poor Trevor. I wonder if they do this to him a lot or if they CHOOSE to do this to him because he was more down than they were after Sophie's loss.

Before we move on though - it is very interesting that the other ghosts seem invested in Trevor’s story - even if it’s to heckle him (like Hetty asking about Tara Reid, Alberta asking if it was silent or talking, Isaac asking about a movie again, and Sass asking about projection).  Given how bored they are and that Trevor “has been through this” & how quickly they adapt to TV and movies later on - it's clear that they have listened and they do understand.  They interrupt just to make it fun.  It’s almost like they’re teasing him just because he’s the baby ghost.  

We see similar instances of this later on - when they heckle him about spying on livings in “Spies” but then turn around and watch Trevor’s parents in “Trevor’s Body”.  We also see that even Thor who constantly says “landship” knows what a car is, but does it just to annoy Alberta & Sass.  

This is why the second scene is extra hilarious knowing that they’re just trying to drive him crazy.  It’s especially funny because he kind of acts like the baby - he’s used to the teasing and sighs heavily when he sits down, but he doesn’t let it affect him.  I think the reason I like this so much is because I get it - I’m the youngest of Five, I have a slew of nieces/nephews and now great nieces/nephews and I’m always the one being picked on - so it’s funny to see the found family dynamic with Thor as the oldest and Trevor as the baby ghost.  

I love it.  Side note - I totally love that he’s acting out what a movie is.

Weak applause but they are clapping. It's interesting that Pete's directing these 'club days' since he's the second youngest ghost. I wonder if this ties back to his 'peacemaker' side. Because as the peacemaker, he often steps in and maybe these club days and taking turns was a way to keep them all at peace.

Aw, Trevor's sad about this. He's like "I just wanted to finish one damn story!

I am laughing way too hard at these reactions.

Sass is OVER it, Alberta's like shivering, Trevor's just like 'God, why did I die here'.

This is especially funny seeing Sass and Alberta together thinking “god not cod!”  (Especially after the scene in Isaac’s Book).  

Anyway, I love how quickly they went from 'god more cod' to 'oooh, Landship' - Fun Fun.

Also, because I’m ALWAYS thinking about HMoney, I enjoy the fact that he’s mentioned Tara Reid multiple times before this first scene (He said they’ve been through this) and yet, she does it, again, in Trevor’s Body because she wants his attention.  Which may or may not have to do his sadness with regards to the opening scene with Sophie and/or because she’s a bit attached to him or likes him.  I still have some idea that the groundwork for HMoney was always there.

17. did any books surprise you with how good they were?

a couple months back i read jeremy adams’ run on the flash and i was super skeptical (i haven’t read a big-name ongoing cape comic in years at this point) but i actually adored it! he’s really good at having small stories that feel relatively complete, nice little filler issues that are still fun and worthwhile, AND everything feels in service of the characters and plot. it was astoundingly good. highly recommend one-minute war

20. what was your most anticipated release? did it meet your expectations?

i don’t normally anticipate releases but i would say the answer to this was happy place by emily henry, which was: good! my fav by her is still beach read and this one got a little wild at points but it is still a strong third place out of her recent adult romances

but huh this is a tough question, although I frequently think about it (and now I'm gonna list all my fics because I just can't pick😂)

Punishment:

Okay, this one is easy and I think obvious? The only multi-chaptered fic I finished (as far as I can remember) but most definitely the first of those. I think it's also my highest wordcount for a fic yet, but it will be surely surpassed once I finish other wips.

It has smut, which is my fave to both write and read, duh, a bit of dramatics with slight angst, and a lot of taboo. It's sinful and I just love it. Although I wish continuing it with its sequel would be as easy as this fic was.

It's also my favourite ship at the moment, duh. And my first non-Perpollo and also my first Perseidon content. The change from Perpollo was slow but much needed! (As you can see I almost never write Perpollo now, mostly only in Percy/gods stories, I just don't like it that much anymore, although it used to be my fave...)

2. Reference letters for NRU:

This is also an easy pick, I just LOVE the idea behind it, as much as I hate the idea behind the books that will come out, hence why I changed it to be more enjoyable because smut just always helps😂🥰

Not finished, yet, but I remember the Zeus chapter was sooo much fun, and quite possibly a record in my chapter/smut wordcount. I'm soo looking forward to continuing it. Hopefully, we'll see the end soon. If I had to guess this will be the second finished multi-chaptered fic of mine.

Now, this is where things get messy. I kept thinking about my fics, and while I've written some one-shots that I absolutely adore (khm, Tale of Tails, or I'm feeding on denial, fooled by my own betrayal and Happy Father's Day!) I simply cannot place them as third, because mostly once one-shots are done, they're almost never actively in my mind afterwards. Although I do enjoy frequently re-reading these works, and up to this day I wouldn't change a thing in them, so that's love.

But because I wanna put multi-chaptered works here I have two candidates for the third place:

These are both very recent fics, with not-so-recent ideas behind them. I think I had these since May in my ideas doc. 😅

3. No Point In Running From Your Fate:

Although the other is more catching for me, as for the story and angsty feelings, that's a bigger project for sure. Therefore harder to write. Also, this one is less of a slow-burn, which I both love and hate. Mostly hate to write lol.

It will have smut very soon, and it's a much different idea than any of my others, since it's A/B/O, with my own personal system for it. I'm aware the A/B/O dynamic in it is a bit ridiculous perhaps, but I didn't wanna write the conventional one.

Honorable mentions for the list are Sunflower and The Days Of Our Love, my first stories to post on AO3. (let's pretend I never wrote anything prior to those) And while I love TDOOL (the new edition) for its structure (the increase-decrease change in wordcounts of present-past ratio) I love Sunflower for its end... which you don't know yet. But I cried a lot over it... lmao. However I'm stuck with them for multiple reasons, one, I don't enjoy Perpollo anymore, two, Sunflower is at a place where it's hard to continue, due to its themes, and how much self-reflection is in it.

However, I'm looking forward to finishing more of my recent stories too. I really enjoy Pasiphae's Curse (it will have its variations, in like 4 versions) Substitute Boyfriend and Gentlemen's Club too.

1Q84 - I've read MANY Murakami books but I always really liked this one!! There are definitely some uh, adult themes that people might not vibe with in Murakami books and I get that but overall I LOVE his worlds.

Night Circus - I'm actually halfway done with this book and I really, really like it so far!

Love in the time of Cholera - my ultimate favorite book, probably? I actually lended my copy to my bf when we had first started dating.

Before The Coffee Gets Cold - I have not read this yet but I want to!!

Memoirs of A Polar Bear - I picked and read this book and a whim and I liked that it was literally a generational book on this polar bear family. My bf and I are in a LDR and this was one of the first books I chose for our little book club. The other book he chose was Circe, WHICH I HAVEN'T READ YET BUT HAVE HEARD GREAT THINGS ABOUT.

ANYWAY, that honestly warms my heart so much that this is probably your favorite piece of my writing??! I wasn't feeling confident about writing for akaashi because I don't feel like I have a strong grasp on his character BUT it made my day to read that. :'))))

but literally ilysm, and yanno i gotta tell you how much i adore u and your writing all the time LMAO but i totally feel you about akaashi’s characterization bc he’s quite complex sometimes imo. but the way you wrote him was so seamless and (perhaps he reminds you of your boyfriend in ways?) makes sm sense.

i never thought of giving transparent post it notes a go, so i’ll have to revisit that idea bc at least that can make things somewhat neater (? idk if that makes sense) and i also like placing color coded markers (for like quotes, or new words, characters introduced, etc).

Ahh last month, I read some interesting aapi books !! Along with The Joy Luck Club, I've also read Things We Lost to the Water (Eric Nguyen), Disorientation (Elaine Hsieh Chou), Whereabouts (Jhumpa Lahiri), and the Kiss Quotient (Helen Hoang). I also tried audiobooks for the first time because my ebook website wasn't working. I kinda like it because I get to stare at my ceiling (with purpose). Who said I'm not productive??? Some of the books that carried over to this month is Chanel Miller's Know My Name and Murakami's Norwegian Wood. And oh boy, do I have thoughts™️ lajsdkaslk

All the got7 songs are sooo amazing. Each track is wonderful and special, and I will cherish this album like it is my baby. this fic is literally a must-read in the dc fandom it's not done yet but holy shit. basically goes through young justice and other arcs if the league had died while dick was robin. perfect if you liked young justice and convoluted plotlines, and this fucking fic kicked my emotional ass SO hard

Summary: When Batman's out of the country for Justice League business, it falls on Dick to find his missing brothers. Once he does, however, he nearly loses control fighting their kidnapper. He has to deal with both the mental and physical consequences of that fight while helping his brothers heal. Includes some soft Bruce tending to both of his eldest boys because they need some hugs and they support him in return.

now this one is simply criminally underrated. hella protective dick, which is my lifeblood, and some of the most well-written hurt/comfort i've read
