In one of life's great ironies, S.T. Gibson has managed to write one of my favorite sapphic vampire novels as well as one of the ones that I found most disappointing. I stand by A Dowry of Blood as a masterful character study and deep exploration of vampirism as abuse; however, as much as An Education in Malice wants to be about cycles of hurt and obsession and loves turned bitter viewed through a lens of poetry, it doesn't do anything that In the Roses of Pieria doesn't do better.

Erm guys….
What if I told you there was a dark academia Carmilla retelling coming out soon WITH spice?
Anyhow I just finished this and loved it. I read around 100 sapphic books a year and this is one of my faves now. But then again, I am a former creampuff so do with that opinion what you may.
This book comes out Feb 15th.

books i read in 2023: an education in malice by s. t. gibson
I loved getting under her skin. I loved knowing that, if I tried hard enough, my words could pierce her armor and disturb something inside of her. I could see that I had an effect, even if she tried to hide it. It was in the furrowing of her brows and the tightening of her mouth every time I stood up in class to read. If I couldn't touch her, I would settle for making her squirm.

Books I loved with endings that made me wants to scream, throw them against the wall, cry, then immediately reread.

I kept my tastes quiet, kept them private, feeding them only rarely and when I was sure I wouldn’t get caught. I often felt like a wolf wearing the skin of a girl, balancing on two legs and hoping no one would notice. But this girl , this Carmilla … she undid all my domestication. One smile from her and I wanted to loose my hair and chase her barefoot through the woods, I wanted to knock her to the ground and pin her like a butterfly, I wanted to dig my teeth into her plush lower lip, I wanted, I wanted.

best books i read in 2024:
"an education in malice"
s. t. gibson
rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️, 5
genre: dark academia, gothic, vampire
synopsis:
Sumptuous and addictive, An Education in Malice is a dark academia tale of blood, secrets and insatiable hungers from Sunday Times bestselling author S.T. Gibson, author of the cult hit A Dowry of Blood.
Deep in the forgotten hills of Massachusetts stands Saint Perpetua's College. Isolated and ancient, it is not a place for timid girls. Here, secrets are currency, ambition is lifeblood, and strange ceremonies welcome students into the fold.
On her first day of class, Laura Sheridan is thrust into an intense academic rivalry with the beautiful and enigmatic Carmilla. Together, they are drawn into the confidence of their demanding poetry professor, De Lafontaine, who holds her own dark obsession with Carmilla.
But as their rivalry blossoms into something far more delicious, Laura must confront her own strange hungers. Tangled in a sinister game of politics, bloodthirsty professors and dark magic, Laura and Carmilla must decide how much they are willing to sacrifice in their ruthless pursuit of knowledge.

Did you read Dowry of Blood?
Go read An Education in Malice.
You want good proper vampires? This is where the good vampires live.
I mean, there are still murdered dead bodies here. "Good" as in "the way vampires should be written" not like "these vampires solve problems."

I just finished an Education in Malice by S.t. Gibson and… I wanted to like it. I really did! A dark academia carmilla retelling set in the 60s at a women’s college? Generally you can sign me up for that.
But… it was kinda boring! And it really wasn’t carmilla. I mean, the characters had the same names and there were little nods to the original here and there, but the story was fully different. Which isn’t bad, but that’s not what it was billed as to me. I would have liked it better, I think, if she’d just changed the names and callled it completely original
The sex scenes were dull and were easily skippable because of it. The supposed bdsm was barely there blink and you’d miss it. I didn’t even really feel any connection between Laura and carmilla. Gibson told me they were infatuated with each other but refused to really show it. Lafontaine was interesting but fell apart at the end. Idk. I wasn’t sold on it.
The ending was boring. I found myself almost putting it down about 3/4 of the way through but only powering through to see what happened and I was so disappointed in it I almost wish I hadn’t.
Idk. I want a better fucked up lesbian vampire book. This one wasn’t fucked up enough and committed the cardinal sin of being Boring 😂

Hey, have you seen the new book "An Education in Malice" by S. T. Gibson? Its a Carmilla (the novella) retelling set in 1968 Massachusetts at a university. I haven't read it yet (so no promises about quality) but I just got it from the library and thought you might like it also.
I hope you have a nice day :)
I haven’t, but that sounds right up my alley! Thanks for the rec
