The next day you were out for things he had to do, even when he was busy he never let go of your hand and took you everywhere he had to go, he never left you alone. For the afternoon of that day you were going to a party with more of their friends, so you returned to the hotel to get dressed and go to the party.

Being there, you had a great time, dancing, eating good food and dancing more. Throughout the night he was in charge of telling you how beautiful you looked, you had a very tense time when the music at the end of the party became a bit slow.

You could notice how Roier tightened your waist slightly more and more, or when you looked at him he was already looking at your body, which warmed your stomach.

"When you feel ready to go, let me know" and after a while, you headed back to the hotel. While there you took a shower and then he went into the bathroom, you did your skincare, you moisturized your body and you put on nice pajamas.

Roier came out already with his clothes on, drying his wet hair with a towel, but his messy hair made him look so good, you stared at him and automatically began to breathe heavier.

You approached him asking for his attention and he hugged you, as if his arms suddenly drove you crazy.

"Love, are you okay?

You just nodded your head and wrapped your arms around his neck, pulling him closer to kiss him. Between kiss, you were pulling his body until yours fell on the bed and he climbed on top of you

"I need you" —was the first thing you said when you parted—

"Are you sure you want to do this?"

"Yes"

And with that, Roier began to kiss you more intensely, removing your clothes slowly, making sure that there is no place in your body without attention, treating you very delicately, kissing your forehead when he had the opportunity. He did all the work, he didn't let you do any effort and just enjoy.

You felt strange, you had never been naked in front of anyone before and you felt a bit ashamed, trying to unconditionally cover your body with your arms

"Baby, don't be ashamed, I want to see you, please"

You tried to stop covering yourself but you did it without meaning to, and when Roier noticed it, he would take your hand and kiss it to remove it from your body.

With his simple touches and kisses you felt your body vibrate, you easily got wet in his hands. Roier felt that you were ready, so he positioned himself between your legs.

"You ready?"

When you confirmed that you were ready, he began to enter you slowly, paying attention to your body language for any sign of discomfort to stop. It hurt a little, your face said it all with a frown and closed eyes, but Roier kissed to distract you from the pain.

"Just relax love"

When he hit rock bottom he stopped for a moment to get you used to it, and he didn't move until you told him to.

He kept asking you if you were okay, if you wanted to continue with this or if you wanted to stop, worried all the time. After a few minutes you asked him to move and he started to move slowly, you felt so tight for him, and he was holding himself back from moving faster because of how good you felt around him, he was so afraid of hurting you.

But on the contrary, you were feeling very good in the rhythm that Roier maintained, his words saying how beautiful your body was, all the compliments, the way his hands kept caressing your waist, everything came together to send vibrations to your body center, you even moaned under your breath, asking him not to stop, reaching your first orgasm.

Roier got out of you and immediately approached you

"Are you okay love? Did I hurt you?"

[PART 1]

This is the next part!

Summary: Tav can’t deny her own eagerness to reunite with everyone. She’s missed them all dearly. It’s been years since so many of them have been in the city concurrently, not since the final fight against the Elder Brain. Lae’zel immediately ran into a battle to save her people from Vlaakith. Wyll and Karlach went to Avernus. Gale stayed behind for a little while, but eventually left for a position at Blackstaff Academy. Astarion is no longer safe from the sun so he went into the Underdark. Shadowheart stayed the longest, but she too ventured out of the city, following Aylin and Isobel.

She considered asking to tag along with someone, but she felt it wasn’t her place to insert herself into their lives. If they wanted her around, surely they would’ve invited her … right?

The door to her bedroom opens, and without a proceeding knock. There’s only one person who forgoes such a courtesy. “Yes, Terrick?” He doesn’t fully enter the room, but she can feel his gaze on her back. One, two, three minutes of silence pass before Tav closes her wardrobe and turns around. He’s still just standing there with this scrutinizing expression on his face. If nothing else, Tav is a patient woman, so she continues getting ready.

Naturally, that is when he speaks up. “That’s not the dress I picked out for you.”

She pauses right in front of the bed. It takes every ounce of her willpower not to sigh. “I know.”

But he presses on. “Are you going to change?”

Breathe. Just breathe. But don’t sigh. Don’t give him the satisfaction. “No, Terrick. This is what I’m wearing.”

He finally walks in only to stand in front of her vanity. “At least put on a dress,” he says, adjusting his cravat.

Tav plops herself on top of her bed and crosses one leg over the other. “I will if you will.”

He doesn’t look away from his reflection. The man keeps working on that damn cravat. “For the gods’ sake, can you please not make this harder than need be?”

She rolls her eyes. “Can you allow me some comfort while in public? Most of the dresses I have are too tight.”

Terrick scoffs. “Then lose some weight.”

Tav wouldn’t describe herself as overly confident in her appearance. However, she is content. Growing up on the streets as a child, looks didn’t matter all that much. And then after joining the enclave, she was taught inner beauty was of more import than physical beauty. As an adventurer, as long as she was alive and well, that’s good enough for her. Yet holy hells, did that scathing remark almost make her convert into a Bhaal worshiper.

The druid doesn’t miss a beat with a quip of her own. “Awe. Concerned you don’t take up enough space in pictures?” She speaks in a cooing voice that drips with condescension. “Don’t worry, husband dear, I will happily step aside so you can have all of the spotlight.” The last thing she wants is to be in the Mouth anyway.

He whips around to leer at her. “I’ll have you know—”

She’s not through. “Oh, but you’re not the reason the journalists come to these events. I am. The people want to see the Hero of Faerûn on the front page, not some glorified Baldurian socialite.”

“A socialite?” Terrick goes so red in the face, he puts Karlach to shame.

She rises to her feet, refusing to let him stand over her. “What else do you call a man who lives off his family’s fortune while floating from party to party?”

Any more pressure in his head, and the man’s eyeballs would pop clear out. “How dare you?” he snaps, b-lining towards her. “I’m the only reason you’re able to start your little projects. Your schools, your food banks, your clinics; they’re all possible through my family’s name and wealth. Without me, you’d be nothing.”

Actually, she’d still be the Hero of Faerûn, but Tav bites her tongue. By now, she was far too used to him lording his status over her head. They’ve had this argument numerous times and she’s so tired. If she said that thought out loud, it would eventually end with her pompous husband threatening to end their arrangement. Tav would be out on the streets, which isn’t too much of a concern. She’s no longer a small defenseless child with no way of earning money. She’s wholly capable of enduring hardship, homelessness included.

But it wasn’t just about her anymore.

She has a son; Callum, who is a small defenseless child. Terrick may or may not keep Callum. He doesn’t care for him like she does, but she wouldn’t put it past the bastard to use him as a bargaining chip. But if they both ended up on the streets, there’s no guarantee gold would come her way, even with the title of Hero. And she couldn’t burden her friends with her problems.

So Tav stays.

And Tav bites her tongue again and again.

And Tav prays for the days when Terrick is out of the house.

Breathe, don’t sigh. “I’m sorry, Terrick.” She bows her head slightly. “You’re right. My comment was … out of line. Please forgive me.”

“I suppose.” He squares his shoulders and clears his throat. “See to it that it doesn’t happen again.”

It most certainly will happen again. “Of course.”

“Now put on the damn dress I picked out, wife.” When Terrick invokes that title, it’s like a curse, something akin to a Dominate spell. It makes her skin crawl.

“Yes, husband,” she responds.

Placated for now, he nods once more then rushes for the door. Just before exiting the room, he throws out one last command over his shoulder. “And do check on the boy. Last outing, he was rather irritable.”

Tav grits her teeth. Callum was sick during their last outing, just coming down from the flu. She offered to stay home with him, but Terrick demanded otherwise. The poor thing was miserable the whole afternoon, constantly coughing, sneezing, and sniffling. Breathe. In and out. Or else Bhaal may have a new follower by nightfall. She forces a smile onto her face. “Yes, Terrick. In a moment then.”

“Thank you.” And he slams the door shut.

Now that she’s alone at last, she finally lets out the heavy sigh she’s been holding in.

By some miracle of the gods, the grand opening of the new food bank goes off without a hitch. Speeches are made, the people seem receptive, and Tav doesn’t pass out due to her constricting clothes. All in all, today can be chalked up as a success. What brings her true happiness though, isn’t the praise from the crowd or the pride of a job well done. No, it’s the sight of some familiar faces scattered amongst the crowd.

Wyll. Gale. Karlach. Lae’zel. Shadowheart. Astarion.

She’s so very happy they’re all here for her.

But also incredibly sad because they may be here now, but they’ll all inevitably leave again.

THE ILIAD: FOR DUMMIES ☀️ MASTERPOST

just kidding you're not a dummy, you're some hot stuff right there! i will be going through the entire iliad and giving you a general overview, some interesting plot points, additional context, and some other analysis tools to better help you understand the epic!

This post will serve as a table of contents (at the end) to my Iliad posts and a general overview that I will be constantly updating! I am using the Richmond Lattimore translation of the Iliad, alongside my companion book by Malcom M. Wilcock

Before we get into analyzing the actual Iliad, we need to get into some essential questions and context about the book

WHAT IS THE ILIAD:

The Iliad was written by Homer (this is actually debated but we can get into that later) around 750 and 550 B.C.E.

At its core, the story is about heros and humans. It's an Iron Age poem about an event, the Trojan War, that was supposed to have taken place in the Bronze age. The Iliad is considered to be a poem comprised of multiple books, 24 to be exact

This story is only a few days of the tenth and final year of the Greek siege against the city of Troy- this means it relies on the audience already knowing most of the basic details about the Trojan war and the gods themselves (don't sorry, I will provide this for you as we go along)

WHO IS HOMER:

The age old question: who the fuck is Homer?

Literally nothing is known about this dude except that he wrote (or was credited with writing) the Odyssey and the Iliad

People have referenced his writings for EONS. Archilochus, Alcman, Tyrtaeus, Callinus, and even Sappho have referenced the poems of Homer in their own works. These also were popular in fine art in the late 7th century B.C.E.

There is a general consensus that Homer was from Ionia- a territory in western Anatolia or modern day Turkey that was populated by Greeks who spoke the Ionian dialect, aka the birthplace of Greek philosophy. Want more info on Ionia? Click Here!

His descendants were called the Homerids/Homeridae

There is scholarly debate on if he even wrote both the Iliad and the Odyssey, or if he only wrote one, etc etc etc. This is due to some very specific differences in the structure of the words used (like the use of short vowels, and the seemingly unimportant semivowel of the digamma being missing from the epics...yeah it's a lot)

The poems were reproduced ORALLY. This means that the poems were passed down by word of mouth, which if I were to sit and listen to this entire book via a guy singing at me...idk man I think I would leave

All of this to say, we really don't know who Homer is. There's a lot more information about what he could have looked like, if he really did write the Iliad, and a million other things, but I've already talked your ear off and we haven't even gotten into the book yet. WAS THE CITY OF TROY REAL:

Yeah. There were nine layers exposed at the site of where Troy was expected to be, and nearly fifty sublayers at the mound of Hisarlik

Troy was a vassal state: meaning it had an obligation to a superior state, which happened to be the Hittite Empire

Troy had a lot more allies than original fighters in the city, meaning they had many language barriers- making the army harder to control than the unified Greek enemy.

THE STYLE OF THE ILIAD:

Cause - Effect - Solution

The poem is concluded with a mirror image of its beginning: an old man ventures to the camp of his enemy in order to ransom his child

The poem foreshadows the death of Achilles in MULTIPLE passages! He knows he is destined to die young if he fights at Troy, and the demise of his lover (don't fight me on this) Patroclus gives us an even more extended foreshadowing of the grief that is to come

When Achilles dies, Thetis (his mom) takes his body from the pyre and takes him to a place called the White Island. It's not clear whether he is immortalized BUT the reference to Achilles funeral in the Odyssey states that Achilles is cremated and his bones are placed in a golden urn along those of Patroclus, and the urn is entombed under a prominent mound (tsoa fans...you're welcome)

This isn't really necessary knowledge but moreso something I think is cool: the backstory from the Iliad of an abducted bride also appears in the Sanskirt epic Ramayana (circa 4th century B.C.E.)

okay now here is the ACTUAL important stuff

Humanity is the center of the universe in the Iliad. Humans motivations and concerns generate action in the poem, while the gods are often reduced to the role of enablers or spectators

The style of the poem collaborates with the vision that the speciousness of this epic means that every thought and gesture, spear cast and threat, intimate conversation and lament CAN be recorded. It gives a consciousness behind the demands of the iliad that these interactions MUST be recorded, this attention to detail is another way of showing centrality and the worth of the human experience (Greek OR Trojan)

The Iliad is ultimately a poem about death, the chief elements that distinguish the mortals from gods are: Death shadows every action, and death is neither abhorred nor celebrated. Instead it crystalizes by means of this one theme, death in battle, the essence of what it means to be human (Life is a struggle each person will always lose, the question is how one acts with that knowledge)

Modern readers and analysis blogs will state that one's inner spirit is somehow the "real" self, however the Iliad assumes the opposite: The psykhai (soul, spirits) of dying heroes fly off to Hades while their autous ("selves") are left behind in the form of dead bodies

Glory is INCREDIBLY important in the iliad, why? If mortals could live forever (like gods) then glory would be useless. It's a commodity to be exchanged, and because of this it has an economic and symbolic reality

Companionship is incredibly important

Pity is also very important, it's the concluding note of the poem. Even the gods feel pity

THE GODS AND THE ILIAD:

The Iliad gains depth by the divine dimension shedding glory on the humans at Troy. The gods are so intensely concerned with warriors and their fates which elevates the mortals to a special plane

Mortals are only separated from gods because they grow old and die

The symbiotic bond of gods and mortals is always see-sawing between adoration and antagonism

Humans who get too close to the gods risk being struck down, case in point, Achilles. He's young, well-made, he's a warrior but also a singer/musician (the only hero to be seen doing such a thing), he looks and acts like Apollo. THEREFORE...it's no coincidence that Apollo is ultimately the god who slays Achilles, just as he did Patroclus

Poetry supplemented or even guided ancient Greek religious interpretation much more than the activity of priests due to the lack of any official religious text. This gave ancient Hellenism a very fluid nature

Obey Me (OG) Newbie Guide

Author's Note

There are multiple guides for this game existing already. Most could be found in Obey Me sub-Reddit or by searching in Google. Since the game is already 4 years old, this game has finished the main storyline and already moved on to a new prequel game called Obey Me Nightbringer (NB). Obey Me (OG) is still up and running at the time of this writing, since they run the events in both OG and NB, so if you want to still play this game, then that's up to you. Keep in mind though that this game is grindy.

In this post, I'll make a concise guide that will help new players (hopefully) traverse in the game. As always, this guide isn't only from my own experience, because I'm going to include tips from different sources here. The links for the sources could be found at the bottom of this post. I've created this guide with the idea that this is my game notes just in case I forgot about this game.

When starting an account

You can't reroll account in this game thru normal means.

It's not recommended to reroll in this game since you'll get a free UR Asmodeus card in mail but, if you're like other players who want to reroll just to get a card of their favorite guy or you want to get ahead by having more UR cards early in the game, then here are the steps.

Play the tutorial by skipping dialogues until you get a 10-pull. The cards you'll get is fixed.

Keep skipping until you clear 1-6.

Click the home button and go to mail after being bombed with announcements. Claim all. (You'll get enough to do a 10-pull.)

Roll in Nightmare. Preferably in event banner.

If you don't like the results, create transfer code for this account. (Walkthrough on how to setup Transfer Password here.)

Close the app in this phone.

Have a second phone or an emulator (e.g. Bluestacks) with Obey Me app.

Open the Obey Me app in the second phone or emulator.

From the title screen, click Transfer Data > Enter Transfer Code > Input your Transfer Code and Transfer Password > Tap Transfer

Once done, the account is now transferred to the second phone/emulator. Close the app.

You could use the first phone to create another account again.

All about UR or UR+ cards

UR/UR+ cards are the endgame goal to collect in the game. The difference is that UR+ cards either have outfit for character or moving background, while UR cards don't. Both have similar power level.

UR/UR+ card is the highest rarity. SSR cards could work for early game, but would need to be replaced once you reach harder content in game.

There are two types of cards needed to create a team - demon cards and memory cards. Demon cards can be obtained from Chapter A, any event banners, or event reward ladder, while Memory cards from Chapter M, from event reward ladder, or from shard farming in hard mode in lesson 61+. Chapter A and Chapter M are considered standard banners in game.

NOTE: You can't have 2 demon cards of the same character in 1 team. You need to have varying characters for each attribute.

Different ways to obtain UR/UR+ cards:

free pull in Chapter A for demon cards

free pull in Chapter M for memory cards

[RECOMMENDED] pulling in event banners with devil points (DP) or demon vouchers (DV)

[NOT RECOMMENDED] pulling in Chapter A and Chapter M with DP or DV

buying UR card shards in Akuzon with raven (Akuzon > Exchange Raven > Piece of Card)

grinding past events in Lonely Devil for UR cards

UR memory card shard grinding in hard mode of Lesson 61+

UR memory card from limited-time event login rewards (happens during holidays or anniversaries)

UR demon card from 10-pull birthday banner

** It is advised to save up the DP and DV for the limited-time event banners.

** It is advised to save up DP or DV enough for a 10-pull before your birthday. The date you write as your birthday will have a special 10-pull banner that will guarantee a UR card.

NOTE: You need 80 card pieces and 60,000 grimm to form a single UR card.

Surprise Guest

Surprise Guest randomly comes out after you manually battle a stage. One of the 3 guys in the demon cards you used will appear. Getting their 3 interactions right make them gain intimacy points.

Their preferred touch interactions after battles can be found here. Better go look at the list yourself because the options are many.

You can also get gifts when you get a heart reaction for all 3 interactions. You could get 6 gifts per day. Gifts include:

2 AP x10

2 Grimm x1,000

2 Raven x1

Devil Points are premium currency used in game and can be bought using real money.

Demon vouchers are used to pull in Chapter A and Chapter M in Nightmare. These can also be used in limited-time event banners.

buying DV in Akuzon > Exchange Raven > Nightmare, costs 45 raven

Daggers are used to uncap the max level of card. This is done in order to increase the power level of the card, to be used in harder lessons in main story.

For example, UR/UR+ card has max level of 100. You need 10 daggers of same sin attribute with the card, 100,000 grimm, 100 gems of main sin attribute, and 100 gems of secondary sin attribute of card in order to increase the max level of this card. Each uncapping of max level of card is increased by +10 levels.

All about Lonely Devil

Lonely Devil is a mode where you could rerun the past events in game. You could unlock a past event using LD tickets or by paying 10 DP.

Players who have missed their desired rewards from the event ladders rerun this event in order to continue what they have started. The total points acquired from previous run is saved and could be continued on your next run of same event. The event rerun lasts for 4 days. However, cheat cards don't work in here.

Lonely Devil is a great way to obtain UR memory cards in the game. Daggers could also be obtained here.

reaching certain point requirements in event reward ladders

potential event login reward (happens on holidays or anniversaries)

All about D-energy

D-energy is used to increase the chances you could have in capped battle stages. Battle stages that have x3 cap are event stages and hard mode stages. Using one D-energy gives 3 battles. If you run out of D-energy, 5 AP will be used to get 3 more battles.

All about Card Mechanic and Total Power

UR/UR+ cards have max level 100 and could be uncapped until you reach max level 200. SSR cards has max level 80 and could be uncapped until you reach max level 160.

Each card rarity has their own power level that is used in battle stages. This part will be further explained in a separate post (because I think I'm almost reaching the 30 max image cap in a post). I will link the post here later on.

Miscellaneous Info

You can drag your finger across the hearts that appear on screen during battle instead of tapping them individually. WAY more effective.

Choosing quick clear x3 or x5 on battles only gives EXP to player level, not including the card level, but you still get grimm and rewards.

Save glowsticks. Rainbow glowsticks are the more powerful buffs in battle.

You don't need to complete all daily missions in To Do. Just clear 7 missions in order to get the 18 DP daily.

You can leave your rewards sitting for as long as you want, and collect them whenever.

AP will carry over when you level up.

You can edit the game's graphics settings if you have lag. Just go up to the top right corner and hit the settings gear.

Work towards building a deck that covers all colors with a variety of characters, both demon cards and memory cards alike.

Try to keep your in-use cards (your deck, as opposed to your overall collection) evenly leveled.

Don't forget to level your memory cards. They are also important in total deck power.

Daily server resets at midnight JST or UTC+9. Convert into your local time to know when it will reset in your location.

got in my feels and wrote a lil drabble about jim going to comfort izzy after the events of calypso's birthday. basically, everyone can tell ed and stede are fucking, and jim decides to check on izzy. romance between jim and izzy is not really intended, more of them building trust and friendship post-kraken trauma.

cw for alcohol abuse, mentions of manipulation/torture from blackbeard, spoilers for season 2 (up to e6). no explicit sexual content, just short offhand references to relationships between crew members. kind of an off handed homophobic comment from izzy? but he’s a repressed queer too so yk

it takes only four pints of rum and an old flagon of whiskey to bring israel hands back to the quiet contemplation that fits him as well as his time-softened leather glove. as trustworthy as the tide is izzy's penchant for isolation- whether skulking or simply lost in thought, it is hard to tell. but once again, he stands at the prow, face as distant and unmoving as the figurehead before him.

the moon hangs high in the sky, shedding her soft, even glow over the remnants of the night's festivities. flowers and old brandy alike are spilled over the deck of the revenge. there is no urgency to clean it-- lord knows that the captains have enough on their minds (and hands) not to make a fuss about it until tomorrow.

and so, the deck is empty. empty but for israel hands, lone sentinel at the head of the ship, makeup and melodies long since drained from the old man's bones. christ, he is tired. it is little surprise when the footsteps make their way softly towards him from behind. he knows their owner easily, and he holds no fear of their approach.

jim wordlessly takes the space next to him, the two standing in the shadow of silence. it isn't uncomfortable- both have been long accustomed to occupying a space without a need for words. tonight, though, something hangs heavy on izzy's mind. the sharpness of his breaths drawn-in, the hesitation every movement costs him. jim knows how to study people, and moreover, they know their ship's first mate. they've never been great with these kinds of things, admittedly, but izzy has made such an effort to provide for the crew lately; isn't it only fair that jim check on him too?

"the breeze came in cold tonight, eh?" they ask, noting the flask in his hand, and the waiting bottle of dark liquor beside it.

izzy says nothing. nods. takes another swig. almost mechanical in his rhythm.

"you, uh. you got a good voice on you, boss. never heard you sing like that before." even as they speak, jim follows izzy's half-vacant gaze to the waves breaking gently against the ship's starboard side. madre de dios, this was going to be harder than they thought.

"well, it was a special occasion," he finally drawls, lips taut with unspoken emotion. much as he wants to hide it, it pulls at the corners of his eyes, his lips. he takes another drink, then leans bodily against the railing.

a moment. then another.

"what is it you want, jim?" the words are cold, clear-cut-- but his tone is not. if anything, it is rank with weariness. the younger pirate feels a little pang in their chest, almost wanting to place their hand on his shoulder to comfort them. they do not.

"crew and i thought it would be best if someone, er-. well, we wanted to check on you." it is a clumsy sentence, but there's no expectation for great flowery prose between the two of them. honest truths, borne plain. that was something the two knew all too well.

"why? cause the captain and his twatty boyfriend finally grew balls enough to shag each other with?"

this time, the sentence is cold. bracing. jim winces, but not at the vulgarity. izz's words reek with exhaustion, or maybe something closer to desperation.

"uhm. yeah." that is the most fitting response that comes to mind. izzy would talk about how he felt or he wouldn't. or, more likely, he'd insult jim to their face like he had so many times before. they were intelligent enough to know it was less about them and more about the first mate's own feelings.

"you want to know how i'm feeling, is that it, jimenez?" izzy asks, finally meeting their gaze. jim holds steady but silently urges themself not to notice the dampness that threatens the edges of the first mate's eyes. they remain silent once again. a slight tilt of their head, an almost-nod.

"fuck you, that's how i'm doing." he scowls, but the venom is removed, has been removed since the new leg was offered at his door. they glance own at it now, gold paint casting a soft gleam in the moonlight.

"izzy," they say gently, a hand now actually reaching for his shoulder. to their half-surprise, the first mate lets it. as he does, tears well gently at his eyes, pushing and pushing and finally breaking over the surface of his cheeks. his gaze fixed on the mangled corpse of the ship's unicorn now.

"can't blame a dog for biting the handler who starves him, jim. y-you can't." he speaks softly, a low tremble moving throughout the hollow of his words. jim doesn't ask who is the dog, izzy or blackbeard. they don't wonder or read too deep into the words; they are for izzy to understand.

what they do do, however, is move their hand down his arm and past his wrist, gently cupping his fingers with theirs. a simple squeeze, just once. no implications behind the gesture, no secret alternative. just a small slice of comfort offered between two people who have weathered the storm of outrage and consequence together just a few weeks prior. izzy doesn't return the gesture, but he doesn't let go, either.

together, the two of them stand, taking in the brine-soaked breeze before them. hand returns to shoulder, and the old man passes his flask to his crew-mate. no, his friend. jim takes a slow swig and sets it back in izzy's palm. this, jim notes, is the most affection either of them have ever trusted each other with in the months of their acquaintance.

jim thinks for a moment on the rest of the crew: groups of bodies breathing lightly against each other, whether in rest or some other unspoken thing. jim thinks on olu and archie, waiting sleepily for their return to the shared room below deck. lucius and pete, no doubt still caught in the thrill of the days' events. frenchie and wee john, roach and fang. jim even recalls on the swede, and buttons, wherever those lunatics have made their own ways off to. finally, they think of stede and blackbeard, (no, not blackbeard, a voice that sounds too much like stede chides. ed), and the sounds of their pleasure heard halfway across the boat, those that prompted this conversation.

and jim thinks of izzy. the word love hasn't come up between the two of them when jim is able to approach him about his feelings for blackbeard, but it doesn't need to. jim believes in action, in tangible deeds they can see. and they know what lengths iz has gone to for years to get his captain's approval. his attention.

at last, izzy drains the last of the flask and tucks it into the black leather of his vest. slowly, he grabs the unopened bottle on the floor and presses it into jim's hand, the order clear: take this and keep me from drinking more than i need to. jim obeys and removes their hand from his shoulder with one last squeeze.

izzy once again meets their eyes and holds in his gaze a silent thank you. what comes out of his mouth, though, is a less-than-brash "now piss off." this turns the corners of jim's wry mouth into a slight smile, and they shrug.

"sure thing, boss." they turn and start to walk away as one last remark spills from their lips. "you should keep practicing, huh? maybe you could team up with frenchie, start a band."

izzy tosses the empty flask at them, but jim notices the small smile that holds itself in the corner of his eyes. "fuck off!" jim smiles too, then traces their steps back below deck.

tomorrow, izzy will enter the captain's quarters and report of the ship's passage to the republic of pirates. tomorrow, he will joke and try to shake off his jealousy like an old coat. it will stay, but the crew will be gracious to him.

for now, though. for now, israel basilica hands breathes in the damp wind that slides off the sea towards him. tonight, he sings the same sad lament to himself under his breath, and he finally lets himself mourn.

I seriously wish Angelina would just leave Jersey Shore already. She always plays the victim and blames everyone else for the drama when she's the perpetrator of it all. Last season, she got engaged to this guy who the roommates had only known for 24 hours. And if I'm not mistaken, she hasn't been with him for that very long either. Yet she got mad at Jenni for supposedly not being happy for her, when her reaction was more her being shocked than anything else. And she of course goes and tells Mike, who she knows by now isn't gonna keep a secret. And Mike of course told Jenni about it. When they were talking about it, Jenni legit got upset and was crying, and you can tell it stemmed from her trauma with the whole wedding fiasco.

Angelina has caused so much drama to the point of mentally and emotionally dragging the girls down, and affecting their mental health in the process as well. They can't even be themselves or enjoy themselves like they used to, they miss out on events with the other roommates to avoid being around her, and have become so self-conscious. It's clear they're scared of going through the wedding drama all over again. They don't even live tweets with the fans as much anymore. Even the fans have turned on them and demonize them for not liking Angelina, when their reasons are completely valid.

The girls have tried and given her the benefit of the doubt so many times. Deena in particular, has actually been the nicest one to her, even more so than Jenni and Snooki. Deena is the one that has gone to bat for Angelina the most and has defended her multiple times. And Angelina repays her by getting ready to physically attack her at he reunion show and then saying "she was never gonna hit Deena." She got mad at Deena for standing up for Jenni, but what did she expect?

LOL bruh are you psychic or what, I caught up a little on JS while I was on vacation because Sammi's coming back and I had to explain all of the Angelina lore to my cousin to establish why Jenni was so upset about Angelina going after her. I get why MTV wants her around kinda, I mean she crafts her own drama out of nothing which is a useful skill in the show, but I can't imagine how frustrating it must be to have a coworker that is basically won't just show up and do the job and instead is trying to make it actively harder for you.

Obviously the majority of the show is scripted/instigated by producers and it's clear that the other cast members know that, but Angelina seems to take that production instigation and use it to make herself look better and her castmates, specifically the girls, look worse. It rubs me the wrong way with Jenni especially because she has been open about her son's needs and that her desire to make sure he's set for life is a big driving force behind her being on the show, so for Angelina to specifically try to get people to hate on her or make her look bad is just really low to me.

IDK and it's just annoying, like again it's obvious that most of the content is pre-planned but it's not like the backstory between the castmates is fake and it's not like there's nothing real about their interactions, but Angelina's behavior exposes the fakery in the worst way and makes it real in the worst way, if that makes any sense. She puts the cast members in a weird spot because they're forced to either fight fairly against her and expose how much of the stuff is faked, or do their jobs while she doesn't and let her make them look shitty. So she's making it too obvious that the fake stuff is fake even though the other cast members try not to expose production like that, and she's making a lot of the actual realness that we see into something super uncomfortable because she doesn't have a relationship with the cast like they do to each other and she's basically just being mean by sticking them between a rock and a hard place.

Mampi Swift, Star Eyes, live sets from Jungle 2023 Los Angeles

Ahh jungle and drum and bass. It seems there has been a resurging popularity in the genre recently, but did interest ever go away since the style emerged in the early 90's? I'm not sure.

I know that since the beginning, jungle offered an alternative to the inherently repetitive 4-on-the-floor beat of house, techno, and trance. As a drummer and percussionist, I was intrigued by jungle's complex breakbeats and chopped-up rhythms. It was very different than anything else being played at raves and clubs at the time.

Junglists were dedicated. I imagined they saw themselves as graduates of breakbeat and techno, whose taste had evolved into something more sophisticated.

The undisputed leader of the LA movement was and continues to be R.A.W. I've written quite a lot about him, I won't repeat myself. Suffice to say he has mythical status. If he showed up at a party, you knew you were in for something special. You could be sure he would bring things no one had heard before, as well as mix in anthems that he himself elevated into anthems.

I eventually drifted away from jungle simply because it was harder for me to dance to. I found the slower, consistent beat of deep house more seductive. But I admit my preference is purely subjective, purely personal taste.

Yet, the genre always maintained a following. Today, jungle events seem to happen quite regularly. And every year drum and bass has noticeable footprint at EDC, with 2023's lineup including Andy C.

This show was the second in a series of three underground jungle events in LA scheduled for Summer 2023. Not insignificantly, the production crew includes members that have been around since the early days. These folks know a thing or two about throwing all night dance events. As expected, all the requirements were met: smallish warehouse in a commercial district 15 minutes from Downtown LA, massive sound system, a few lights and lasers, and top-tier talent. What else is needed?

Last month's installment featured three amazing dnb artists/dj's I hadn't heard before: Kallan HK, DJ Dazee, and Empress. I didn't know them not because they aren't well known. I'm simply ignorant of the dnb scene, that's all. Dazee's set can be found on YouTube and SoundCloud, Kallan HK's live set is on SoundCloud. Highly recommended.

Likewise, I was unfamiliar with the two headliners this time: Star Eyes and Mampi Swift. And like before, I was blown away.

Star Eyes' set was a master class on drum and bass dj'ing technique. I often frequent dj forums on Reddit and elsewhere. Sometimes I'll offer advice to newbies asking "how to dj". In most cases, I want to tell them how I learned to dj – by watching the pros, up close, for hours.

And that's just what I did. I was there in the room recording, anyway. Of course I was fascinated by how the dj's cue'd up and mixed records. Back in the day, when dj's were positioned on the floor next to the dancers, one could stand to the side and watch – and study – the dj's moves.

The problem today is that most times, dj's are physically separated from the audience, either by a big stage or distant booth. A wannabe dj can't stand and look over a dj's shoulder anymore. Now, we fans are down in the pit looking up at the dj, with no clear view of the decks and mixer.

Well, videos like these are the next best option. The side angle provides an excellent view of the dj and decks, making it possible to observe their craft.

And what a craft.

One is mesmerized listening and watching Star Eyes seamlessly bring each track in and out, with flourishes of filter tweaks and fader cuts.

And Mampi Swift? Oh my days!

I told him afterwards his set was like a religious experience for me. I don't even listen to jungle and dnb that much. But holy smokes, I had never heard anything like that before. It was some powerful stuff. I have to go back and give the set a few good listens to fully comprehend the experience. I can just say that the tracks were really extraordinary. The production/sound quality was tops, technically speaking. But the sounds, arrangements, samples, and the builds... It was a mind-bending trip. A sonic journey through the lens of drum and bass, yes, but a fascinating musical journey regardless of the genre.

As is the tradition with this genre, the music is accompanied by emceeing. Originally, I was indifferent to emcees rapping over drum and bass. But it's grown on me. Indeed, if I heard it without an emcee, it would probably sound like something was missing.

Saturday night we were blessed with two local emcees trading off – MCMC, and MC Word. The guys add a lot. It takes talent to come up with the lyrical flows, remember them, and execute without fumbling. And good adlib is very entertaining. Balance is usually best, and fortunately MCMC and Word know when to let it rip and when to lay low.

Local legend R.A.W. opened the event. Respected veteran Scooba closed it out. Audio of their sets can be found below.

The recordings came out nice. The video is decent – my gear is entry level 1080 HD, old technology. Still, better than nothing. The audio sounds good – strong levels, no issues besides the dj mic levels getting hot occasionally (beyond my control). The audio of the YouTube and Soundcloud versions will be different, with the SoundCloud versions sounding slightly better.

Attempting, however briefly, to set aside my salt at all the things I dislike this month, there is one thing I’d like to praise about Masters. Despite being a gacha, they really do have quite the talent for designing new content to be an actual gameplay experience.

Limited Champion Stadium is up this month, with the stated goal being all five stages are weak to the same type. This event functions just like regular CS, including the point structure up to 12.5k. Okay. Simple enough.

However, Champion Stadium itself updated to this 12.5 meta, and included some new parameters. Primary among them being Standard Damage Reduction 8, which is a whopping 80% damage reduction when the attack is not super-effective. This skill costs 300 points, and is essentially free money when playing on-type. But consider that for many, in the CS meta, the worth of a unit has long been evaluated based on their off-type performance as well. Most players still play on-type, but I think it’s notable that off-type performance has been a metric for some time.

And now there’s a parameter that eases on-type significantly, but off-type needs to find 300 more points to allocate to other conditions. This isn’t strictly impossible, but it’s a taller task, considering 2k was already pushing boundaries. Full offensive parameters can only add so much before bulk gets factored in, you know. Handling this kind of off-type focus is now a more significant challenge.

What does this accomplish? Well, remember when Gauntlet dropped? Units like Maxie and Archie were overwhelming, clearing CS content with hysterical ease. It was at a point where most players considered the game solved. You only needed a few units, who could handle virtually every stage, even off-type. Once you had five workable teams, the game was over. You don’t really need to care about new sync pairs. Gauntlet, and to a lesser degree 10k Master Mode, changed that. Suddenly, you need ten teams, with the upper limit of infinity. With this adjustment, new sync pairs with new traits became more dominant. Threats like Maxie and Archie still performed, but nowhere near as well in Gauntlet as in CS. You needed new tools, and for the try-hards, literally every sync pair that came out had value to pull. Yet unlike other gacha, this wasn’t accomplished by making past pairs irrelevant. Every single pair mattered, especially for longer streaks. They found a way to balance wanting to use older pairs, and incentivizing pulling the new ones.

Limited CS accomplished that same goal again. By having five stages all of the same type, now players are incentivized to think beyond the old “one good EX Striker of every type clears it” meta. Now you’d ideally have five of each type that can handle a CS-type stage. And CS players very differently from Gauntlet. So once again, the needed tools are shifting. You may have a good Tech unit with bad DPS and a debuff game that slowly wears down foes in Gauntlet, but that doesn’t work as well in CS. Strikers took a back seat to powerful Tech nukes and EX Supports as Gauntlet took the forefront, but now Strikers are back in vogue. The more EX Strikers you have to a type, the better off you’ll be. And for types that don’t have a lot of good damage dealers? Well, perhaps you may be interested in our new pair.

Or perhaps not. Perhaps you’d like to test your luck against these stages with off-type. That’s still an option. Some damage dealers have been strong enough to clear 3k off-type without much issue. It’s not impossible. Given the structure of damage reduction, these are likely applied passives, which means Piercing Blows effects should bypass them. Maybe you Anni N is still good off-type. Or maybe you pulled C!Marnie, whose insane firepower is just able to handle 500 extra points of strength bonuses, even off-type. It’s not impossible. It’s just a harder task to accomplish.
