My ideal economy is highly authoritarian which sucks because who the hell is ever going to get on board with that
#my posts#people hate being told what to do especially by strangers but the problem is if we let people do whatever we want then people act evil#but i want a government to calculate exactly how many jobs are needed in Every sector in order for everybody's needs to be provided equally#and then to create quotas and incentived and early track education programs to ensure that these jobs are filled#and in theory because theres so many people and people are so productive that if we just had a neat enough system#then disabled people and children wouldnt Have to work to get their needs met#but they would have a very easy to navigate system for finding remote & temp jobs when they wanted to work#because in my ideal society everyone has their needs met so everyone only works to generate fun spending money#for like tourism and arts and research projects and eccentric coin collections or whatever#i think if someone told you that you would never have to pay for rent or veggies again but u had to work to pay for movie tickets#you'd still want to work a little right? youd want to work a job that Matters so you could clock out and go bowling#basically my ideal society is one where productivity is motivated out of desire for fun rather than a need to survive#and sure not every job is FUN but some people are good at farming and some people are good at accounting and some people are good at making#coffee and all of these things are useful so if you didnt have to worry about working to survive wouldnt you Eventually get bored#and want to fill your time up with Something that contributes to society?#maybe no you wouldnt. but what if you grew up in a community that taught you that 'work' is all about giving back to your community?#that to 'work' is to invest in a society that provides all your basic needs and never leaves you hungry or homeless or without healthcare#and the reward for working is not only that you get to come home to a house that you will never* be evicted from#but All the money you make gets to go towards Whatever you want. it doesnt Have to go towards maintaining the life you already have#all that you earn can be put towards upgrading and expanding your life. instead of rent or mortgage bills#your money can save for a ~fancier~ house or a bidet. or something idk. can you see it?#the biggest problem is wtf is a bureaucracy that is 'easy to navigate' ROFL have you fucking Ever heard of that??#how tf do i invent a government system that understands how all sectors of society work together and can easily & clearly#explain that dynamic and track All of the necessary jobs + resources + people that go into a society#like imagine if a government was there to help make your life better And it actually did that?? doesnt exist. how do i invent something#that does not fucking exist?? im not an inventor im a prenursing student ;-;

things i noticed/thoughts about most recent rewatches of dps (plus laserdisk deleted scenes):
whenever theres a group scene i've started watching the characters that the story isn't focusing on to see what they do and i've been having a fun time with that. pitts and cameron specifically seem to almost always be doing something interesting in the background.
hopkins!!!! my favorite minor character who somehow got character development despite having like 2 lines!!!! the last guy to stand on the desk but he did it!!!
sometimes i do like to think about what the rest of the students thought about the dead poets society, esp in alternate timeline neil lives dps keeps meeting universe. like yeah theres this guy in their class whose one of the most credited students in the school and we think he maybe started a cult. idk though. but that group runs out into the woods every few days to do god knows what and one of them keeps talking about "dead poets honor" whatever that means and holy shit welton star student neil perry started a cult.
i watched the movie with headphones. and maybe it's because ive seen this movie Far too many times and mabe i'm listening too hard but it was Really obvious sometimes when audio was added in post production. llke in the sweaty toothed madman scene when you can hear laughing and to be fair the camera is behind their heads. but it does Not look like anyone's laughing. my favorite is at the end of the phone call to chris scene where knox is like i'm gonna seize the day!! and runs up the stairs and the poets are cheering him on and neil is sort of yelling "carpe!!!!" and i could be wrong but i'm like 75% certain that the person singing is Also rsl so now neil is just speaking two times at once somehow. anyways it didn't ruin the experience for me or anything it was maybe just a little bit funny to notice but very sorry if this did ruin anyone's viewing.
people talk a lot about how rsl and ethan hawke really made their characters what they are but i have to add dylan kussman to that list. I get the impression that older versions of the movie didn't really give as much depth to cameron and watching dylan kussmans performance is like. he Knew who his character was so fucking well and it shows!! like the deleted scene of them getting clubs assigned. like i could tell So Much about cameron from that scene
for how little she actually appeared, there is an emphasis put on the fact that neil's mom smokes pretty frequently. and i think that's interesting considering neil is one of two poets shown actively smoking. neil's mom doesn't appear for very long in the movie but during that time it definitely seems like the movie is intentionally making parallels between the two, particularly in the last argument with neil's father. neil and his mother are both sitting for almost the whole time, which contrasts with his father who is standing. they are both almost powerless in this scene. they stand up at almost the same time. anyways there's a couple different possibilities for what this could mean? that i've though of? 1. to show that neil's mother is in a similar situation to the one neil is in in regards to neil's father and 2. maybe a stretch here but the theory that neil inherited his mental illness at least partially from his mother. i'm pretty sure 1 was fully intentional on the directors part, not entirely sure about 2 though
unmanned flying desket scene: it's probably cause he and ethan wrote the scene themselves but the way rsl talks in this scene feels more like the way he talks in general than the rest of the script. like briefly neil perry is talking in rsl's voice. one of my absolute favorite scenes though the sarcastic dialogue is so good.
the light of knowledge at the first shot of the film vs. todd standing on his desk at the last shot of the film paralel

Do you remember a time before you could draw?
I have a story that aches to be told, but I am afraid that because I can't draw, nobody will care. I've tried many times to learn to draw, but nothing I've ever drawn really looked grounded in reality. I'm not sure if this means that I should try harder to learn, or give up and just write the story. Anyway, I love your art so much. It's so tangible, dynamic and full of life; just a joy to experience.
JBDJKVKHAGJ,DGHKGSJLGUKD SHAKING YOUUUU
SHAKING YOU SO HARD RN LOVINGLY
Okok first of all, I dont think you should equate the value of your art based on some standard that youve set for it. The point of it at most and at the very first place is to be something you get to enjoy, not just from looking at the finished product but from drawing. When it comes to art, it should always be for you first, the audience second
I would like you to see your art skills not as some achievement to earn but something you can cherish as something completely yours. I think theres something beautiful about being able to create because its in some ways an extension of the creator. Im sorry youre feeling hopeless because of it and I genuinely wish you dont give up on drawing just because its hard. You can learn from tutorials, understand anatomy, master color theory or anything else, but you first need to know in yourself that you will always be capable of drawing and that whatever you draw is worth something, no matter if it meets some standard or not, no matter if that standard is set by you or other people
To answer your question, I think the idea of someone not being able to draw is nonexistent. If you can draw a stickman then you can draw. I hope this reaches you still and I hope you know that youre capable

(rant about linguistics, aphasia and q!quackity’s impairments post-memory loss!!! to anyone who knows more about any of this, PLEASE add on or dm me id love to learn if anyones into neurolinguistics or anything of the sort)
ive been digging deeper into q!quackity’s condition (because I quite literally CAN’T stop thinking abou it) + taking note of his symptoms/behavior and it seems like what he’s dealing with could be called alexia (acquired inability to read) with agraphia (acquired inability to write), which are types of general aphasia, except i still need to know MORE about his production and comprehension i need to get in there!!!!!
it seems like he could be experiencing literal/verbal alexia with agraphia, which would mean he can’t recognize written letters or symbols at all and that is why he’s unable to read (this is all very tentative… all i have to go off of is my psycholinguistics class and as many academic articles as i can read). from what ive seen, q!q hasn’t actually tried to read any signs out loud, there’s no verbal attempt or production of speech which would make sense if he really can’t recognize the alphabet. BUT. what bothers me is that he can speak spanish with no issues. since spanish has a high proximity between phonology and orthography, theory says people who are able to speak it should be able to read and write the phonemes. and he can’t — or hasn’t tried. THAT makes me think he Can recognize the letters themselves
to confirm this i would really like to see him try to spell…. Or just name a letter! if its confirmed he CAN recognize individual letters, then id say what we’re looking at is more like pure alexia (without agraphia) — only a reading impairment, which would cause him to be unable to Arrange the letters in a sensical order. Its tough to check any of this w minecraft as a medium…. with a keyboard (or, in rp, on a communicator/in chat) it’s kind of impossible to know if he’s clicking at random or actually Trying to seek specific letters. but ill say that the way he sometimes dictates what he’s intending to write makes me think he DOES have the visual of each letter in his mind, and just struggles to order them or accurately transpose them
its also interesting to me how theres no sign of a speech impediment. q!q could speak fine from the very first moment we saw him. all hesitation was modal/owed to circumstance and not actually tied to his production of speech. i think that has more to do with the memory part of things! it could be that the extend of his memory alteration only goes as far as his writing and reading do. speech and comprehension come first in regular human development, and those are the faculties he has kept mostly unaltered. there could also be an argument to make about this pointing spanish as his first language (like cc!quackity) and english as his second, which would explain the dissonance between his production in one language and the other — but given that last stream he did express knowledge of english, idk if its relevant
i dont know much about the actual anatomy of things but i think it’s interesting that most aphasia cases are caused by lesions on the left temporal-parietal lobe. AND that its also possible for aphasia to be caused by head trauma like a hard hit to the head or deprival of oxygen (due to drowning? food for thought).
psa i know the situation in canon could be a lot less deep than im trying to make it. i get that. i dont expect the writers team to have researched the symptoms to this extent, but i enjoy discussing it. this is part of my major and a big area of interest for me so i find it really fun :) ill keep reading on this topic as much as i can and reblog w more of my musings if i find more relevant info. baseline qsmp team please let me in i need to study q!q under a microscope (lovingly)

but the thing is that i actually like dubs, im dyslexic so i can miss dialog sometimes with subs and i also like to multitask so i like being able to split my attention more and do multiple things. generally speaking i would prefer to watch things dubbed in theory
but in practice i really have been finding more and more anime dubs to be sort of... mid at best. im not sure why, maybe its just because ive gotten older and i have a more critical eye now, so its easier for me to see these things. or it could be that ive sort of gotten sick of hearing the same funimation dub voices over and over again for the past decade, not to knock the voice actors or anything but a lack of variety can get stale over time.
but to be honest, and this is just speculation, i feel like the real reason more and more dubs have sort of just been mid is because theres more anime now. seriously, the amount of anime being produced is more now than EVER, and on top of that anime has become so much more mainstream this last decade, so more dubbing is being ordered. not only that but plenty of shows are being dubbed as they air in japan.
so i would imagine that time in the studio must be spread pretty thin, that theres probably not a whole lot of time to dedicate to making sure each series gets a proper passionate dub because theres just too much going on, too much to churn out. it feels like the only shows that get really good dubs are the popular ones, and that makes sense! of course you would put the proper direction you have into the series that people actually care about, and just sort of do well enough on the more obscure ones. like why would there be time to do retakes for generic isekai #2135 when you have to record for 20 more shows today?
and like, with so many shows coming out, i would also imagine that the voice actors would have a hard time getting passionately invested in every single role. like, how into it can you get voicing anime twink #15839 after so many years? but its a job after all and i can understand, sometimes its just for the paycheck and i dont think thats a problem, voice actors need to eat too lol. but like ive seen anime bloopers where the voice actors walk into the booth to record and only realize which character theyre reading for WHILE theyre there (im sure thats not always the case tho). so it seems like it could be a bit more assembly-line style at times.
but yeah basically i think the issue with dubs is just kind of that funimation and crunchyroll or less has a monopoly on them, which makes it so its the same voices over and over again (and this may make the voice actors themselves unenthused or tired), and it also makes it so the company cant put effort into each product, opting instead to churn out things as quickly as possible to keep up with the market. because by the time you wait a season or two to dub a a seasonal show, interest will have faded and everyone will be talking about the new seasonal shit. just like all things in life i believe the issue is capitalism, but again this is just speculation on my end. dont take this as somekind of source on anything its just sort of thinking out loud

🔥 anarchism
honestly im not well versed in theory really cause ive been too busy stuffing my brain with ecology stuff for the past few years so i dont have a strong opinion on anarchists. I used to claim to be one and was like the kind to hate tankies or whatever but i grew out of that. I dont really know where I sit rn. But ik a lot of anarchists are really cringe and annoying online cause a lot of the time they dont know anything practical other than "state=bad therefore no state=good" and end up sandbagging a lot of attempts at organization and discussion because of it.
And like anarchist communes are neat in the rare occurrences where they arent cults and id live on one given like, a lot of standards are met (ie not being a cult) but I think, generally, they only work on a small scale and as exceptions to society as a whole. Im kind of talking out my ass here maybe but i feel like at some point people will try to organize and certain people will take leadership roles (given willingly or otherwise), especially if the community is larger than say, a few dozen people or whatever.
and like the production of modern goods (thinking of like pharmaceuticals and tech and stuff primarily) i cant really imagine that being a viable thing under an anarchist society, especially if theres nothing to regulate consistency. Of course there are like anti-civs who are kinda weird but im not really sure what to feel about them other than im not sure i trust that.
Like in part i hold this fantastical wish that i was born a caveperson just hunting and gathering and all that then id die at like 27 years old cause of some infection, but realistically its not something people should be striving towards, we are too far past that point, unless society is annihilated or whatever. Technology has done a immeasurable good for quality of life of so many countless people, and if used properly, can increase the quality of life of everyone with debatably minimal downsides, which sounds like a better deal than erasing it all and returning to the stone age.
I guess like, i can only really see anarchism potentially working while a majority of the world isnt anarchist. not necessarily capitalist hell obviously but something outside of the commune to produce the goods (even just metals) they use with actual regulations besides honor system. but like i said, Im not well versed in theory. These are my general beliefs currently, but im not gonna die on this hill if someone much more well-read has any contradictions

Sbi Aliens human Tommy 👀
send me an au and i’ll give you 5+ headcanons about it ///not accepting
Idk if you meant this for flying saucer attack but I'm gonna assume it's just a random alien au sorry lmao
1. Ok so part of the reason humans evolved so fast is because of our tendancy to just. Eat Fucking Everything. Plants made themselves spicy for us not to eat them? Not only do we eat them, some people LIKE the spicy pain taste. Pufferfish are literally toxic? Guess what? Theres places where they are prepared specifically for you to safely consume. If we can eat it, we eat it. And if we cant we will keep trying until we can
That being said the first time they saw tommy drinking wilburs coffee rations they SCREAMED. Caffeine is toxic to humans!!! What in the galaxy was tommy thinking?!
That horror only grew when tommy explained that almost the entire earth regularly consumed caffeine in many different forms and many even actively pursue the product. They effectively banned tommy from consuming it further despite him insisting it's fine
2. Tommy steals from the others so oftenm not anything valuable just food and blankets and small things here and there. and for the first few years of them living together sbi allow this because tommy kind of heavily implies it's a "human instinct"
When they find out later that tommy was screwing with them just to use their shit they are so offended (though techno begrudgingly respects the hussel)
3. The human smile is...weird. it took Technoblade a while to get used to tommys baring his nubby fangs as a positive sign. (Though he'll never admit its kind of adorable. Like a piglet trying to look tough)
4. Something they all secretly love is Tommy's ability to adapt to their instincts and habits. Humans seem to be this blank slate for most instincts and senses. They dont even behave like their ape ancestors that much. But to SBIs surprise, this doesnt mean tommy is detached from their behaviors, he actually adapts to them faster than they even do for each other. Tommy let's phil "preen" his hair. Even mentions it feels nice. Tommy likes swimming with Wilbur and even tries to mimic his bubble blowing under the water. Tommy even let's techno drown him in his gold hoard and lays with him during his hibernation days. philzas theory of this has something to do with humans need for pack and community. its something so ingrained in a humans instinct it allows them to packbond and mimic practically any species behavior in the name of community
5. though SBI has learned a human’s pack bonding tendency is both a blessing and a curse in one. tommy can join in their instinct behaviors, yes. but he also has the terrible habit of taking any and all strays he comes across. he even puts techno’s pet hoarding to shame in only that tommy does not seem to care whatever animal he is adopting is hostile or not. there have been multiple occasions that tommy has smuggled in a alien beast twice his size that very much wants him dead. how he manages to do this without being caught is something that no one knows. they only find out by the bite marks and injuries (and on one memorable occasion, the need for anti-venom) that tommy starts gaining.
“kevin is my friend! you cant get rid of him!” tommy cries about the 2 ton hoglin he has somehow smuggled from technos home planet in the thirty minutes they had stopped by
“shroud wouldnt hurt a fly! ...well he would but thats just because he eats them! he wouldnt hurt me!” tommy says seconds before shroud requires them to make a hospital visit for tommy

If you need to explain to people why antisemitic conspiracy theories are bullshit. but also trying to understand and acknowledge how the Holocaust is given some preferential treatment in american politics over so many others, especially african and indigenous people. remember it's nothing to do with Jewish people having some special secret Jewish Power
it's because
1. America's political and economic rivals committed the genocide.
2. America didn't do it!
3. America's political and economic allies didn't do it.
4. America's political and economic allies condemn it.
5. Bonus: the victims were europeans
that's generally it. that's all it takes. i would suggest looking at how japans war crimes and colonialist atrocities were originally quite well known and weaponized in the american public discourse. conjured quickly as a retroactive excuse for why the bombing of hiroshima and nagasaki was fair and warranted. today as the economic and political allegiance between the united states and japan has become more and more profitable and valuable, look how the american public and political discourse has shifted to give leeway to japans own genocide denial. especially as america took over the helm of colonizing and exploiting korea, and as the political and economic allegiance with china soured, suddenly japans crimes in korea and china are less and less talked about. each generation of americans knows less and less about the racist & imperialist social issues & history of japan and more and more about buying japanese products and media. theres a reason for that and it's not some stupid superstition nazis are still trying to push. its just because 1. there's no enemy of america doing it that we can weaponize as convenient propaganda 2. America is taking part in it now, 3. our allies did it or are doing it, and 4. our allies do not condemn it and instead deny it so we play along. 5. bonus: the victims aren't european.

You have absolutely 💯 sent me down a rabbit hole with your laundrygate and doorgate theories!!
This is such a ramble of thoughts so forgive the length. I apologize sincerely if someone already has shared a similar opinion but....what if our favorite unreliable narrator really was under an illusion during his kidnapping? What if Will does have powers which led to him being Vecna's first victim? And what if the weird time inconsistencies aren't due to time manipulation but rather space-time.
In the first episode, the Duffers give us the Xmen 134 reference. Most people quickly connected that to Brenner's manipulation of El and how she later defeats the demogorgan. The parallels are there for sure but if Will really was under an illusion and does have powers than there's a possible bigger parallel.
Without going to deeply into comic lore or nitty-gritty specifics of the Phoenix Force abilities, the villain Mastermind, in a bid to control Jean Grey and her powers, creates incredibly vivid illusions to awaken her true potential. This eventually gives rise to the Dark Phoenix. The Phoenix Force can manipulate space-time. Create and destroy universes. Edit timelines by changing both the past and the future. Be in two places at once.
What if the Mindflayer was already watching Will and was connected to him much like the Phoenix watched Jean since she was a child? Both making them targets for villains who see their potential and much like Mastermind, Vecna's vivid illusion triggered something far more powerful than he was prepared.
Space-time capabilities would explain why Will's vanishing is similar to teleportation. It would also explain why Barb's disappearance was similar if the mindflayer and Will already had a connection which allowed the demogorgan to simply move between worlds. And why Will and the Mindflayer can exist simultaneously in the UD and out. His communicating with Joyce and El while in the UD. The strange gaps in time could be editing from the part of his mind that was already connected to the Mindflayer. He is a spy after all.
What I personally find vexing is that Will's true sight ability simply disappeared after the end of his possession despite having had it prior to. Did the Mindflayer absorb some of the ability since Will and Flayed Billy were both able to communicate with El in the void? Or did Owens install Soteria in Will at the end of season 2 since season 4 revealed that he and Brenner knew about Vecna what he did to his victims? Owens knows vecna wants to destroy the world and if he suspected that Will could spy again, installing soteria would make sense because it would limit the connection. It also links up with his neck spidersense and could be why Will's expressions when discussing Owen look like he doesn't really trust him....because you know, he's a spy.
Here's to him being a successful double spy next season.

OMG PLS NO NEED TO APOLOGIZE BECAUSE THIS IS ABSOLUTELY GENIUS!!!! IM SO SORRY I TOOK SO LONG TO GET AROUND TO THIS ASK!! Everything you said about the xmen 134 really caught my eye, because  I had no clue about the lore behind it!! and i personally DEFINITELY think that will was under some sort of illusion/space time fuckery the night he disappeared, because theres way too many small, purposeful inconsistencies for them all to be production mistakes, including things like the gun still being on the rack in the shed AFTER will disappears, but then gone again when hopper goes in the shed the next day. And the fact that the xmen 134 comic + all of the genius parallels you’ve described here is mentioned in the same episode that will disappears in, right before he disappears?? There’s no way it’s a coincidence.  When you described “The Phoenix Force can manipulate space-time. Create and destroy universes. Edit timelines by changing both the past and the future. Be in two places at once,” I actually immediately thought of will’s season 2 episodes, considering that even dustin, lucas and mike say that it’s different from dnd true sight, considering that with dnd true sight, the person cannot be hard by the other world, but will IS able to be harmed by the mindflayer/the upside-down. So, will’s abilities definitely point towards being physically present in both the real world and the upside-down at the same time, and physically able to interact with both at the same time (ie, when will walks out of the arcade in the upside-down, he also physically walks out of it in the real world.)  ”Space-time capabilities would explain why Will's vanishing is similar to teleportation. He is a spy after all.” YES I LOVE THIS IT MAKES SENSE!!!  OKAY, SO: personally, i don’t think that it actually disappeared, especially since he had the ability prior to his possession/had his first episode in the show at the end of season 1- instead, I think that his powers/true sight possibility went “dormant,” in a similar way that El’s powers did + how she had to use nina to get them back. However, it’s also strange to me that will’s episodes seem to have ended as of season 3, but his neck tingles/connection to vecna still remains.  I think that everything you’ve mentioned here regarding will and flayed billy or owens and soteria are absolutely viable theories, and I’m honestly not sure what the answer is. And that’s also a very good point about linking up with the neck spidersense!!! And regarding flayed billy, when you mentioned that, it brought to mind the fact that billy sort of sees a “clone” of himself in the upside-down that talks to him, and like i’ve pointed out before, there’s that weird netflix still image on the pause screen that shows will looking into the shed at the EXACT moment that he would have disappeared: did we somehow have a weird will-clone situation going on???  It’s also interesting that during the scene where will is talking about owens with mike in s4, there’s that blooper of noah going “when i was the spy,” so that is another, albeit small, link between owens and spy imagery. It’s also interesting to me that owens was pre-emptively working on nina in the case of el losing her powers/needing them back again, so he’s definitely been thinking pretty far ahead with this sort of stuff, so i think there’s definitely a possibility that he was worried about will spying again.  My brain is total mush today so apologies if my reply is all over the place, but this is all absolutely brilliant and i love it, and im going to be thinking about it!!

Concept that will never ever happen but man, 3d renders for a petsite with dress-up ala neopets or flight rising would be a great like, time-saving strategy. Like it is mindboggling the amount of effort that goes into a single item in FR... but 3d would make the possibility of fully dress-upable pet sites way more viable (i mean. Im sure theres more but I can only think of those two. And thats fair! Flight rising is petsites georg in terms of, whatd you call it, production level)
Like, instead of redrawing a hat 30 times, model it once, and then slap it on with minor adjustments for them all, and theoretically once you have a system of what fits what, adding on another beastie wont keep exponentially increasing the work of adding new clothes.
Then, render the creature and the clothes as spearate images, and have the site layer them as appropriate and compress into a final single image. That would mean no shadows and stuff, but thats already something you cant really do in 2d, but it would be a lot more noticeable.
Also wayyyy wayyy easier to do multiple poses.
That's also making me imagine the possibility of animated petsites... prerendered probably but man, imagine like, pokemon amie but on your computer or phone with your lil dressupable creatures. As much as I hold petsites dear to my heart, I do think they're on their last limb simply because most people don't go on their computer to goof around. Like technically you can play FR on your phone but its just not the same. (Side note but um. Anybody want a nature/water sprite? I feel a lil bad theyre rotting on my account considering they must be pretty rare at this point)
The idea of a petsite as an app causes me some form of revulsion, but I'm not sure why. If anything thats what I always wanted as a kid, but most games like that are... well. Shit. But I'm also not 12 anymore so maybe 'mobile games where you have some dudes to take care of' has expanded as a genre.
But in theory it would be cool. In general I think petsites came up with a lot of fun ways to interact digitally that arent anywhere else, that would make some unique videogames.
Went on tangent below lol
Also same with those dragon breeding mobile games that you really shouldnt play but are a guilty pleasure of mine... I'd love to make a whole game based around completing a compendium of dragons by collecting different ones and combining them.
As much as I hate to say it though they fundamentally revolve around waiting a lot of time between attempts, that I cant think of a way to keep the excitement of getting something different without being the shitty mobile game style ohhh you can wait 4 hours... orrr pay usss... like, just removing the paying would just make the game annoying.
they are genuinely fun if you have no money and are resistant to addiction... which is sad, I wish I could translate the gameplay loop in an equally fun but non-exploitative way.
But i guess animal crossing does real time stuff and people love it, but it also doesnt seem the sort of idea to make a good chill out game... the only way i can think of is to just make it so on average by the time you come back from playing the 'find more dargons' part of the game, that your combinings should be ready. But making that into a factory sort of advancement would be... kinda fucked up lmao.
You obviously want to make the dragons feel like pets or companions and not breeding stock. But also the angle of 'you are a dragon conservationist and you must convince as many dragons as possible to Fuck' sounds kinda funny... like how in FR obliterating dragons for money is well-rationaled as sending them off to serve their deity, but in reverse.

i mean i get the thesis and in a literal sense sure but in terms of like literary criticism its bonkers to use a works copyright status as the arbiter..like a disney live action remake is licensed bc they own both properties but its probably doing even less w the source material than a fanfic writer would 😭 there are also like zillions of licensed books and films being filmed because someone changed the name of harry potter to larry baker or whatever and now its transformative. also copyright literally didnt EXIST in shakespeare’s time (and older stuff goes out of copyright) so youre also setting the bar that anything with an older source material is automatically an original work... the point really is that like in theory, transformative use of a source is free from copyright liability so in theory a work that has a copyright license would indeed signal that its non-derivative, but there are sooo many things that are, contentwise very much just fanfiction, that are able to escape the critical liability of being such beacuse..they have a license? because there was money behind their production? and if u go with that definition then you kind of give ppl who think fanfiction about star wars is equivalent in value to the works of shakespeare free reign to say youre just being elitist because its like well yeah your criteria is basically based around commerce. and if my criticism of fanfiction isnt anything to do with its legal status but about the fact its derivative and simplistic then there are also plenty of licensed properties that should get the same criticism even if they are free of that label like if you took a midsummer night’s dream and renamed the characters after members of the band one direction it would still be a worthy and transformative piece of fiction and also if someone publishes their south park fanfic but changes the names of the characters it doesnt. become good. i think theres a lot of correlation vs causation moment ie. copyright doesnt mean something isnt (EFFECTIVELY) fanfiction just bc its correlated with something being an original work, and also stuff borrowing from copyrighted properties doesnt inherently mean its bad and shallow its just that people who watch supernatural and then go on ao3 and write stories about some of the characters fucking generally dont produce literary masterpieces. but there is a hypothetical case where a work using elements of a copyrighted property does have literary value and its not the copyright status that is a defining factor come onnn. ok i explained this so badly i hope this doesnt look like im not a fanfiction hater its just that i think this attempt at criticism is misguided and kind of stupid and well a kpop hyphen url posted it so

Week 6 Slow Fashion Summary
Digital Citzenship and Slow Fashion:
These are obviously linked via social media, as a tool used to advertise certain fashion trends. The concept of slow fashion is often based around the idea that its sustainable and responsible and that theres an air of respect and dignity given to all those who participate and share their ideas online.
What is slow fashion?
Based around sustainability within the fashion industry and design incorporating high quality, small lines, regional productions, and fair labor conditions (Pookulangara & Shephard 2013, p.201).
The movement has seen many adaptations, one of the more prominent being the counter cultural movement of the 60's, where clothes of the previous generation were being refashioned to suit the more liberal ideas that this generation represented.
Tumblr media
For clothing to be deemed a slow fashion it must meet 4 requirments:
. Free of Child Labour
. Materials used must be less harmful for the environment
. The production of the clothing must be ethical, using good quality materials and paying workers fairly and using local producers.
. A strong relationship between producers and workers where a profitable relationship can be forged for both parties so that the movement can be succesful.
What imapact does the fashion industry have on our economy?
The slogan "think globall, shop locally" has become super popular among slow fashionistas alike. However there is still a massive maret for fast fashion where people are purchasing clothes that are designed, manufactured and sold in more than one country (Clark, H 2008, p.430). Now this has created the unfortunate situation where its mostly 3rd world countries that are responsible for majority of the material and textile production for the open market, this ends up being mostly made up of women who are horrendously underpaid and work terrible hours. The issue is though in Australia the fashion industry is resposible for 27.2 billions of our GDP each year and employs over half a million people.
Fortunately though during the pandemic because the sale of clothes plummeted asno one was going out, people started experimenting with slow fashion becoming more aware of the disatrous imapact the fashion industry had on the environment.
I mean the figure don't lie, the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of industrial water pollution and the US alone dumps 11.9 million tonnes of clothing each year.
Leah Musch is a popular slow fashion influencer
Tumblr media
who is spreading the message of slow fashion by showing off some of the peaces she has created, she is heavily influenced by the 70s surf culture in Australia specifically Bondi.
Leah's life changed when she signd up for a program that sent her over to Brazil with a group called Social Starters and lived out of a suitcase for 2 months. This epiphany led her to get home and sell all her clothes in a garage sale, since then she has been making all her clothes by hand showing just how wonderful homemade can be.

like idk i generally disagree with the whole "go outside touch grass" response but boy howdy
#i think used as a simple dismissal for Anyone Daring To Give A Shit About Things is shitty obvi but#there also are a lot of ppl on here whose perspective in arguments is so heavily skewed by their time spent buried deep in discourse#that they would seriously benefit from time offline bc their priorities are heavily divorced from the reality of whats actually#yknow. causing problems in the world#and i know that bc thats how i spent yknow. Most Of Highschool was buried deep in discourse#and there were so many things that i felt like were the most important things to focus on because of the harm they were doing when#looking back they had literally No Impact on the real world#and in the context of "(xyz) is a (niche discourse group) dogwhistle‚ like i said before‚ theres pretty much only gonna be two types#of people using those things#a) completely innocent randos who arent even aware of what the things youre accusing them of being off of one phrase /mean/#and b) people who You Should Be Able To Tell Where They Stand based on all the other things they say#i hate talking abt it but a well known example was the '' 'you. are. valid.' is a dogwhistle'' discourse that arose during ace discourse#culminating in the ''you. are. vlad.'' ''this sounds suspisciously aphobic or possibly terfy'' post everyone likes to laugh at#a situation created by someone learning a thing could be dogwhistle when used in certain contexts turning around and accusing Anyone who#used it of doing it on purpose which in turn made everyone else go 'yo this is fucking stupid lmao'#because yeah! it kinda was! because the theory of dogwhistles just doesnt really work as well when applied to minor#topics like this! which is where the whole ''do more research before throwing a fit when you suspect someone is using one#'' thing comes in#and i just dont think its productive to try to label any niche discourse thing as Always A Dogwhistle Stay Away From All Who Use It#because put into perspective like. 99% of the time people are gonna be using it innocuously#also i just fundamentally disagree with the idea of ''if a bad group of people use a thing a lot that means that thing must be#associated with them''#is that often a first step? sure‚ but its nowhere near enough on its own

What makes BTS most vulnerable
Woo! A reading! I wanted to do this bc its been on my list for a little while now!
I just got off work and wanted to do this asap! Pls forgive mistakes! I'm not gonna proof read bc im lazy.
Cheeky disclaimer: this is for entertainment purposes and not to be taken as fact! This is my interpretation of the cards!!
So so so so
First off, I did each member and also one for the group! I didn't have a specific plan in mind when I started, so I just went with the flow!
Let's start with the group first
Tumblr media
So. The 5 of pentacles is what makes them most vulnerable. This card talks about isolation, feeling lost, anxiety, not having money or influence. Most of all, a mindset of lack.
All of this to me makes me think that what makes them most vulnerable is the fear of being right back where they started. Feeling exiled from the industry, not having the funds to be sure of a stable future and also not having a strong sense of identity as a group and within the group. It's like their vulnerability comes from something almost like ptsd? Let me try to make that make more sense. I genuinely think that where they started and the uncertainty and constant ridicule really had an impact on them. The vulnerability they have as a group is essentially emotional distress? Like, I wish I had better words to explain. It's the fear that they haven't actually grown or gotten anywhere and that they are insignificant that is their vulnerability. Fear based on where they started?
I really hope that made sense. Moving on though, 7 of swords is how it manifests for them. This card is sneaky. It talks about getting away with something and betrayal but I think this meaning is the most relevant: strategic moves. So how their vulnerability manifests is that the fear that they have causes them (and the company) to make very specific moves to keep their fears from happening. It's like, they take steps to make sure their fears don't get realized. Career wise but also personally. They can sometimes force growth because they fear stagnation. Kinda like rolling something uphill? Once it loses momentum it starts rolling back down.
The other two cards, Wellness and busy times and multitasking, are what they can do to lessen that vulnerability. Keeping healthy in mind body and spirit (also keeping the group bond healthy too) as well as channeling their emotions and fears into productivity. (Think the ly:tear album)
Seokjin
Tumblr media
This is really intresting. So, what makes him most vulnerable is repressed emotion that causes inner turmoil. The moon is all about your insides and the vastness it has. In its reverse it talks about the darker parts of your subconscious. So, him bottling shit up and repressing it becomes a monster that affects him without him even necessarily knowing.
As for how that manifest in his life, it literally affects his judgment. Like, literally. It messes with his decision making.
As a fellow human with a similar problem, I can almost bet that any issue he has with another member will be shoved away and it will fester until he's at his breaking point and he'll absolutely weaponize it but disguise it as "just poking fun" or he might also purposefully create low level chaos. It's really intresting because this could manifest in so many ways. It could be his insecurities, issues with other people, fears ect and they fester in his brain space fucking with his judgment.
What he can do to lessen this vulnerability is deep emotional healing. Istg these cards are too perfect to make up. He needs to do THE WORK and heal it. He probably recognizes this and is working on it. Its not fair to himself to put himself aside in order to put other people first. (I think this probably happened a lot in the early bts days bc he had to be an older brother and a responsible figure to 6 other kids so he prioritized group harmony over his own issues and emotions)
Yoongi
Tumblr media
????
Um, okay. So what makes yoongi most vulnerable is the dark side of wealth. That's the 10 of pentacles rev. But it gets interesting bc the 10 of swords isn't what makes him vulnerable but it also isn't how it manifests?? So here's my theory time. What makes him most vulnerable is the dark side of wealth. I can only assume that it's the isolation and internal conflict of benefiting off of a system that fucked you over in the first half of your life and also feeling bad for having wealth that most people can never imagine? I really don't know? But with the 10 of swords talking about betrayal and deep wounds, it could be that he's extremely afraid of being taken advantage of? Like, that's another downside of wealth. Maybe people have tried to use him for money or influence? Especially in his personal life. Like, he probably finds it extremely hard to get close to people because he's afraid of betrayal over something that is already hard for him to deal with?
Also loss. He wasn't born rich. He worked his ass off to get what he has and he's probably afraid to lose it. He might "stash" money?
Anyway, knight of swords, how it manifests. This card is about a drive to succeed. So essentially this makes him run and push himself hard and harder and harder to out run what he sees as an inevitable end? Sometimes this can blind him.
As for what he can do to lessen this vulnerability, we have, self confidence through God confidence. This card to me talks about having faith in your actions and skills and trusting in yourself even if you doubt your ability. Essentially, yoongi just needs to trust in himself to land on his feet no matter what happens. Life is always uncertain so he needs to trust that he can weather any storm he might face.
Hoseok
Tumblr media
This was one gave me some thoughts. So, similar to jin, it's the bottling shit up and having you subconscious mind eventually figure shit out because it's been neglected but with the 2 of swords in reverse, talking about confusion and being indecisive, I think this kinda causes him to shut down? He might get apathetic. It's almost like when you work a computer so hard that it crashes.
And how this manifests for him with the 3 of pentacles in reverse is that he gets thrown out of alignment with the group. Kinda like how you shouldn't drive on a flat tire. He withdraws and becomes hard to reach and puts up a wall that causes a lot of problems for him as well as those he is around. It's a defense mechanism. It can also manifest in him preferring to work alone as well instead of group settings.
This exposes him to depression and doubt.
Also similar to jin, for how to lessen this vulnerability we have Bless your heart with talks about reaching out (breaking down that wall) and healing your heart and healing the root issue.
Namjoon
Tumblr media
Okay. This is the one that makes so much sense but also confuses me.
So. What makes him most vulnerable is the magician rev and 10 of cups. Unrealized potential and poor planning as well as love, harmony and alignment.
So.... what? How does love and the happiest happiness make him vulnerable?
Well, I think he's suspicious of it. I think that he can't help but wonder in his big big big brain if THIS is the right happy or if its really happiness at all? Almost like commitment issues but also not? It's like, he's afraid that it won't last? He might have trouble fully allowing himself happiness. Also, what makes him the most vulnerable is love. It opens up every bit of his soul and puts it on a laundry line for everyone to see and I don't think he thinks he's worthy enough to be seen like that?
As for how it manifests in his life, 9 of cups, personal fulfillment and a strive to have everything else in hislife sorted out? Essentially wanting to have a perfect foundation so eventually he can share with all the important people in his life.
As for what he can do. Value your self worth. pretty straight up. He needs to value himself more. He deserve love and he deserves to feel seen even if it's uncomfortable at first.
Jimin
Tumblr media
Oki. What makes jimin most vulnerable is choice. The 7 of cups talks about focusing on what's best for you and making choices based not on illusion. I think jimin is plagued by unrealistic expectations and confronting the fact that it's not possible is what makes him most vulnerable. He makes choices that are driven by illusion. Usually about self. I think specifically about how he doesn't always see how good he already is so he pushes himself to chase after something that isn't always right for him or even there in the first place. Acknowledging and facing it brings vulnerability that he doesn't always want to face. I think he might equate vulnerability to powerlessness.
How it manifests. 9 of wands rev. Paranoia and being defensive. It's his own fear and insecurities manifesting outside of himself.
As for what he can do, passion and purpose and multifaceted. Focus on what is close to his heart and don't get side tracked. Theres so much more to this situation and there isn't an easy fix. There's a lot of things that need working on in order for him to feel comfortable.
Taehyung
Tumblr media
Oki oki oki. What makes Tae most vulnerable is strength rev. Raw emotion. He doesn't always express his emotions and when he chooses to be more open, his emotions go through a bit of a filter. Showing his unfiltered emotions makes him most vulnerable because it's him as he is. In his truest form. It's all of his wants, joys, fears. Everything.
As for how it manifests, 10 of wands and Hanged man, it becomes a burden that he carries because he feels like he can't just be honest. He pauses and allows himself time to feel on his own but that means possibly being misunderstood and a bit isolated.
Now. What can he do to lessen it? Bless your heart and healthy communication in relationships. TALKING TO PEOPLE AND ALLOWING HIMSELF THAT VULNERABILITY. It's not bad to be vulnerable. Heal that shit bb bc you are worth it.
Jungkook
Tumblr media
So, what makes him most vulnerable? The world in rev. Not having closure and seeking it. The process of seeking closure for himself about things that could have or putting to rest something that has come full circle. It brings vulnerability because he has to face things that he could have done better. He has to face things coming to a close and be okay with is.
How it manifests, the tower, ace of cups, 5 of cups reversed.
The tower is essentially everything crumbling down. I think jk thinks too much? If you follow a ball of yarn all the way to the end then you just unraveled a whole ass ball of yarn.
Him going to close those things cause him to unravel his foundation.
With the ace of cups, creativity and love/ new emotions, I think him taking the time to pursue personal closure helps him to be more open to love as well as giving him creative fuel.
The 5 of cups rev. Means that him doing this closure thing helps him to forgive himself bc he's taking time to move on and tie up loose ends?
For jk this closure thing manifests in every aspect of his like and I almost see it as him shedding? Sounds weird but he's consciously moving on and paying attention to what he needs?
As for what he can do? Deep emotional healing! He runs the risk of feeling more of the tower manifestation so he needs to keep himself emotionally healthy in order for this to be productive instead of destructive!
~~~~~~~
Tumblr media
I hope y'all like this! I feel like the cards didn't always follow what I was kinda going for with my questions but it all works out in the end I guess?
My next reading will be up later this week (I've already done it and taken all of my notes. I just have to type it all out) so look foward to that as well!
Deltarune theory post
We all knew this was coming.
So, chapter 2 has introduced a lot of new info to us, and people have examined the game to bits already, so I figured, I will sum up all my own theories, theories that I believe have ground, and theories I dont fully believe, on one massive post! I will try to categorize them with characters. More will be, under the
SUSIE
Not much here honestly, she is still the resident tough girl with a soft heart underneath that rocky shell. Uncertain if she does have a home or has one thats unhealthy, as she doesnt call her parents. Other than that, theres no new material. Skip.
RALSEI
I dont trust Ralsei, but I dont think he's evil in any way. He knows of our existence, can separate us from Kris, names the town after us(the player). Additionally, he just sort of. Appears in the cyber world with no explanation. But also, he is a nice person. His first priority in all situations is the well being of others, and he has done nothing that puts anyone in danger, or benefits only himself in any way. However, his awareness of us means that he will eventually speak about it. And I dont trust him, because he might take the side of Kris, not us. Or even if he sides with us over Kris, I just have a bad feeling about him. The fact that the town is named after us though implies he is not just aware of us, but aware of the Survey scene with Gaster.
Some people pointed out that him mentioning Roaring only now, and him not turning to stone are suspicious, but his initial tale in ch1 includes "The World Dies", so it makes sense for him to not focus much on the details and instead put emphasis on "The Heroes Save The Day". Additionally, he says that the fountain in the castle town is made of Pure Darkness, and can sustain other darkners, since thats his fountain, it makes sense for him to be able to survive in other worlds and also explains why in ch1 he doesnt just shut his own fountain down(which wouldve restored the balance as well if the fountains were identical).
Tldr; good kid, kinda shady, but not malicious. Fully expect him to just "show up" in ch3.
SPAMTON G SPAMTON
Most recent tumblr sexyman has a lot of interesting dialouge, between projecting his past onto you and the telephone. When he leaves his shop, it turns greyscale, which is commonly related to G-Followers, and the addison that states that the phone had garbage noise(same description as when we use the phone), imply connection to Gaster. And both him and Jevil having similarities in their insanity, implies Gaster to be the knight. But knight, is another title later on.
During his fight Spamton talks as if he wants to free Kris too, they'll both be BIG and FREE together. He states at many points that he wont, and he cant force Kris to join him(but he can kill you 50% faster than similar products). And once he's freed, his body falls and goes limb with no wires to hold him up. He cant be free, but states that maybe we can be strong enough to be free. His lines paralell jevil in the "take me and may my power help you be free" sense.
Sidenote; Spamton G Spamton is a copycat. He dresses that way in order to imitate Swatch.
BERDLY
Oh god he's dead!! ....maybe. while neutral route shows his arm paralyzed and weird route has him not wake up, he is a monster. And when monsters die, they turn to dust in Undertale, if such is the case for Deltarune as well, its proof that Berdly is alive. Due to the story, its unlikely that we'll have berdly outright dead, as such would greatly shake the town that has "zero crime rate". A possibility is that getting hurt in the dark world causes your body part to be paralyzed for a while, similar to sleeping on your arm or having static all over your leg. And a "death" would cause you to be comotose for a while.
Otherwise, Berdly is a great written character, who suffers from insecurities and hides his inferiority complex with a superiority one. He cant even consider Noelle wants to help him as a friend because of his low self esteem, (certainly if someone knows his situation and still helps, its weird behaviour, no one without further motives would do that to him, its not like normal people would care about him if they knew he was a loser. So she must have a crush on him, that explains why she overlooks his inferiority). He cares a lot about Noelle, trying to help her despite being kinda bad at it, and has trouble rejecting her "crush" so he tries to make her happy despite not reciprocating those feelings.
He's a good kid. And as queen says "theres nothing wrong with him, he's just annoying."
KRIS
And here we go. Kris. Strap on.
Kris pranks us. At the end of ch1, after putting us in a cage, Kris is fully able to go to the kitchen, but takes the time to brandish a knife and smile. This is done to scare us. Kris, upon being possessed, has their it their first priority to prank us, like they prank Noelle by grabbing her under the bed.
Spamton fight is bothersome for Kris, because of the puppetry. Others arent aware, but Kris isnt free, they're like Spamton, and when Spamton is freed...he flops. That paralelling their experience(and probably explaining why kris HAS TO put us back), gets them shaken up for clear reasons. But also, here is something I havent seen anyone mentioning. While I dont think they are linked in any way, the basement is a dark and scary place, much like the places Kris and Noelle went to explore. Kids mention that Kris is afraid of that bunker in the forest. The Basement probably scares Kris because we are forcing them to go to a place they are afraid of, whatever scared Kris inside the bunker, must be important. I believe that whatever is inside The Bunker, is the reason why we are with Kris.
The Knight.... Kris...definately is not the knight. Spade King, Seam, and some others have met the Knight, but do not recognize Kris as the Knight. Spade King even shouts about how the fun gang cant stop the Knight's will. All of this, leads us to the conclusion that Kris can NOT be The Knight. Then, what about the ending? Will get to that after a short intermission.
DARK WORLDS
Dark worlds so far have a positive effect on the lightners, and help them get over their problems or at least help them acknowladge their issues. Berdly's insecurities, Noelle's lack of self assertion, Susie's agression are all things that are helped thanks to the dark worlds. Multiple dark worlds can exist for a short time, as we see both castle town and card world coexist without the world immediately collapsing. But in the long run, only The True Fountain can be open, as extra fountains will tip the balance eventually and Apocalypse happens. Got that? Good.
The ending of ch2
Starting from Kris ripping us out the events are as follows;
Kris crawls outside as Toriel goes to get sugar. Kris slashes the tires and goes back around the house. Toriel notices that someone is around and the tires are slashed. Kris comes back and puts us in. Then, Toriel asks Susie to stay overnight after saying the pie wont be ready until tomorrow. Afterwards she calls the cops about the situation before falling asleep, then Kris opens the door, and opens a dark fountain.
Ok well Kris opens fountains, Knight opens fountains, case closed! Not. We see Kris opening a fountain AFTER we learn all lightners can. This means that there is no proof to Kris being able to open fountains before. Additionally, Kris makes the job harder for themselves if they intend to cause the Roaring. Susie knows about the dark worlds afterall, and her being away would make things easier. Not to mention the cops.
So it is my belief that Kris opens the fountain for a specific purpose. To use the dark world. The fountain is opened right next to Toriel, and knowing her, she has plenty of issues that a dark world can help(such as being bitter and authoritive.). It makes most sense for Kris to make the fountain, have Toriel get therapy, and then close it again with Susie's help. It is unclear if Kris couldve asked Toriel to have Susie over, as we are there and without us, Kris sorta limps around.
And calling the cops could be part of their plan. The police force contains Undyne and Napstablook, we know Undyne is too busy watching over dog criminals(or catching them), and Napstablook...well. I dont have much for them, but overall, I dont see Napstablook as a character that would Narratively do much in chapter3 with Toriel, unless they talk about Asgore. Asgore is an ex-cop. It is reasonable to assume Asgore will be called to check up on them. And if Asgore comes, he'll enter the dark world, and also benefit from the family therapy(Asgore's issues being "selfless to a fault" and "ignoring his own problems").
Kris, by opening the fountain, could help family issues resolve. They might not get back together but the tension between them may soften, Asgore might learn to care of himself, and Toriel might learn to care of others.
THE KNIGHT
Well. Its not Kris. Not Ralsei. Not Susie. Not a darkner. Someone with access to library and the classroom... Gaster? Chara? Maybe. As of now, we dont have enough info to decide. But we can have a look. We know Chara exist in some capacity, as the japanese version of the "no one can choose who they are" talk has their own unique talking pattern. We know Gaster exists in some capacity, as Gaster performs the Survey, and the various gaster hints.
It could be that Gaster is the Knight, as both Jevil and Spamton seems to be driven mad by the same source, and one is told to be maddened by the Knight while other has Gaster sprinkled all over. When it comes to motives, Gaster might simply be opening the fountains as an experiment, he's a scientist and "dark darker yet darker" sorta paralells Spamton's "Its still dark, so dark". Might even explain "what do you two think", as it'd referr to Us and Kris or Us and Vessel. His "everywhere/when" form could allow him to enter those places. The word Egg when translated to windings gives us the movement of a Knight in chess, that'd be a solid "in your face" clue like Flowey calling himself "Prince of this world". But it doesnt seem like he'd be interested in the Roaring and causing the apocalypse.
It could be that Chara is the Knight. Having enough power to shove us into Kris showcases enough "realness" to effect the world, Queen narrates the knight's actions as "raising their hand and plunging their knife into the earth", Knife, Soul, chara adjacent enough. Their ghostness would allow them to create fountains there, as its not like we had to see chara for chars to put us in Kris. Motives could be that Chara hates the world and thus takes the role of The Roaring Knight. But its not like Chara to be tied to maddened greyscale glitched out monsters.
So, Knight is a loose thread still. But it makes sense. We are only 2/7 way there, and narratively, it makes sense for a knight reveal to be way later down the line.
And thats about it! Do tell if Ive missed anything you'd want to hear about. Might make an additional post later.
So I mentioned in previous post(s) that the Sk8 dub VAs had clear intent with how they read certain characters and how David Wald felt that ambiguity in representation can actually reach people who might be questioning their sexuality or gender identity more easily than explicit media where they might tune out as a defense mechanism - and by explicit here I mean "clearly in the text" not "NSFW"
Now this line of thought got the hamster wheel in my head running, so I decided to run with it. The more I thought about the limits of this theory, the more I came to the conclusion that ambiguous representation can still be fine as long as there isn't canon heteronormative content that invalidates the subtext.
I think Sk8, both the sub and (but primarily) the dub kind of stumbled into this a bit. This could have been intentional (which I feel is the case of the dub) or unintentional (which I feel is the case of the sub/original production) or a mix. But in either case I think it's a very interesting scenario to apply Queer Film Theory to (James Somerton did a fantastic video on that topic, you should give it a watch) and an interesting example of utilizing tools that have traditionally been used to bait the LGBT+ community in a way that lets us better identify with the media.
I bring this up because the ambiguity in the show can actually be a boon for the fandom because theres no explicit explanation in the text OR heteronormative contradictions to the way certain charachters act. In that way, people can read different qualities into all of the characters and they can all be equally valid:
- A NB reading of Cherry is just as valid as an Ace one
- An Ace reading of Langa is just as valid as a gay one
- A gay reading of Reki is just as valid as a Demi or a bi one
- A Bi reading of Joe is just as valid as a Poly one and so on
From an academic perspective I think this is absolutely fascinating in that so many people can relate to these characters and at the same time don't need to pretend that an aspect of the show doesn't exist (like a het pairing) to fit their reading of the character.
Now this doesn't mean that we in the LGBT community don't need explicit, healthy, and clear representation in media, we absolutely do; and that will only change with continued action and pressure on studios and by putting more LGBT+ people into creative postions. I'm also not saying that queerbaiting is okay, it absolutely isn't and studios and creators who do so are honestly despicable.
What I'm more saying is that there is potential power in ambiguity and that we as a community can still enjoy a piece of media that's largely subtextual and interpret it as healthy representation as long as it's handled with care for the community and there's an intentional and clear effort to do so, much like how the Sk8 dub VAs are handling this show.
