Lucifer visits Sam in his dreams as the Apocalypse rages around them. While he should be trying to convince Sam to say "Yes," Sam soon finds that the Adversary isn't exactly adversarial. Done with the prompt 'classic rock,' loved the way music features in this.

While away from Dean and working a job he hates to forget a past he hates more, the last thing Sam needs is an unwanted suitor in his room every night. So sweet and good. Set around 5x03.

The irony is that Lucifer’s vessel — Nick — is exactly the kind of guy Sam would try to pick up. Tall but not scrawny; the kind of brawny Midwest farm stock that Dean, who prefers natty dressers with elegant faces (Cas) or someone who looks like they crawled out of Donner’s Pass (Benny), would curl his lip at. Sam would like to deny that he has a type, but his history of ex-lovers tells a story of sharp eyes, sharper smiles, and an intellect like a battering ram that he can throw himself against. This is thee fic of all time. Actually got me to ship Sam/Lucifer.

It's hard not to love someone when you know their life story. Lucifer, like all angels, can travel in time; what he sees in the past changes him. Really interesting fic, well worth the read.

The guys explore the joys of fanfiction. Brilliantly done, some beautiful moments in this series.

God vanishes with his sister, Sam finds himself waiting at the bunker for Dean. But Lucifer arrives first, feeling just as lost as Sam.

A relationship snaps into place that both don't want to feel guilty about. s11 divergence, very light-hearted for the ship that it is.

How to Fall by alas_horatio (Sam/Lucifer)

When a spell goes wrong Sam ends up stranded in the north Canadian wilderness with nothing to do but bunker down and wait for rescue, which wouldn't be so bad if it weren't for the broken angel he's accidentally brought along for the ride. So well done, one of the best Sam/Lucifer fics out there.

Being an aspiring writer in Paris isn't easy, and with Adam wasting away from consumption, Sam's life sure is difficult. Monsieur Lucifer could have asked them to leave Le Cabaret Perdu when he discovered the less than flattering poem that Adam wrote about him. Instead Sam makes a surprising deal with Lucifer that is going to change Adam's life — and his own. Sort-of Moulin Rouge AU with a happy ending.

The Light Beyond The Glass by ophan (Sam/Lucifer) (message me for the link)

There's a new Leviathan-eating monster on the loose, and Sam and Dean need to stop it before it starts eating humans. Trouble is, it can only be killed by an archangel. Luckily, Sam's found a summoning spell to take care of that. A s7 canon divergence fic with s5 Lucifer characterization.

Some Kind of Home by SansPellegrino (Sam/Lucifer, Dean/Cas)

In which Sam gets kicked out of his own house and ends up being taken in by the Miltons; a somewhat dysfunctional family of seven held together by the two eldest brothers in the absence of their parents. Sam's plan is to stay with them until Dean comes home from serving in Afghanistan, and then he'll return to Stanford. But, as usual, other things just get in the way.

Stairway to Heaven by clowns_or_midgets, jadeys-world, snarkymuch (Sam/Lucifer)

AU. To save his brother, Sam makes a deal with the devil. The creature he expects and the man he actually encounters are two different beings, and soon he will have to choose between what he knows is right and what his heart desires.

Due Cause by alas_horatio (Sam/Lucifer, Dean/Cas)

Sam gets his first job at the law firm of his dreams, which just happens to be the workplace of his law-school idol, who in real life is a good deal more cynical and a great deal more creepy than he might have imagined. Also: Cas runs a snack cart. Also: Dean helps.

things i (think) i know about Stargate Universe: a Stargate SG-1 & SGA Enjoyer's list of slightly accurate pre-viewing 'knowledge' gathered thru fandom osmosis

there's a ship called Destiny (AKA the Ancient Tesla) that's been traveling thru deep space for who knows how long to reach who knows where in order to do who knows what (it's classic Alteran modus operandi so this part doesn't really surprise me)

before that there's also an offworld base called Icarus, which is definitely a pretty ordinary name and not at all ominous and is in fact a great choice to call a facility you want to operate successfully

there's a character named Eli and a character named Rush. they may or may not be the same person

one of the crew is a video game player (?) who was recruited to the Stargate Program, the highly exclusive, top-secret international initiative for intergalactic exploration, because they are so good at playing video games (ousting John Sheppard & his One-Gene Qualification from the top spot in Luckiest Career Moves of the 21st Century)

Robert Carlyle is present, possibly as the only character who has the faintest clue what Destiny is and where it's going and what it's for

Will from Sense8 is also here, but he doesn't look like he knows what's going on at any given time

at some point, Daniel was convinced to record NOVA-esque videos about Stargate 101 for when the project gets declassified in the future (or maybe for new recruits like Video Game Guy? who, understandably, may not know a lot about wormholes or glowing squids or space snakes because why would they)

Daniel does not look happy in these videos

He looks good tho I'll give them that

Because Destiny cannot be stopped or turned around, and because the gate only works one-way, the infamous Communication Stones are used to temporarily take control of another person's body to talk to people on Earth or visit the ship

Yes, the same stones that made Jack O'Neill drift compatible with a barber from Indiana and made Vala experience what it's like to be burned alive (sorry Vala)

Stargate Universe also made it very difficult to refer to the setting of the entire franchise, because having to say 'The Main Universe Where Events in Stargate Happen' can be a bit of a mouthful

We also revisit Langara (AKA Jonas's planet) because the writers remembered that naquadria is a thing (but apparently still no Jonas?? because the writers hate me)

The Lucian Alliance becomes a problem again, this time not just because of space corn

Rodney shows up (!!) at some point, and someone (a Colonel?) uses their Very Important Screen Time to show the audience that John Sheppard still gossips about McKay every chance he gets (I'm 59% sure this particular interaction is not just from a fic)

SGU is apparently the Voyager of the franchise

There better be a newbie who Totally Didn't Sign Up For This who loves science and adores his mom because I need another Harry Kim in my life

I've been putting off watching SGU because I have a behemoth of a post-SGA WIP and canon is like insect for my brain only the termite variety

But I'm sick and in bed what else am I gonna do, figured it's now or never

He’s handsome, but spoiled, selfish, and unkind, a true beast of a man. He finds her stubborn, contrary, and not at all like an obedient little wife should be. It seems impossible that they could ever become friends, let alone fall in love. But maybe, with a bit of understanding, reflection, and transformation, they can get their fairy tale happy ending after all.

A retelling of Beauty and the Beast 1991, with Gaston in the role of the beast, set in an 18th century Outlander-inspired AU where England won its wars with France and now has authority over the country, and Belle and Maurice are English refugees living in France.

I don’t normally ship Gaston/Belle (as evidenced by my many Beast/Belle and Adam/Belle fics), but I became fascinated by the challenge of writing two things: redeeming Gaston, and finding a way for he and Belle to realistically fall in love, and doing both of those while still keeping his essential Gaston-ness intact.

Thanks for the questions!

F: What’s the longest you’ve ever been in a fandom? What fandom was it?

I'm struggling to answer this one because before starting to post my works on AO3 and starting to be active here on Tumblr I was writing fics in my native language (which isn't English as you know lol). And when you don't have a big population of people speaking the same language and being into the same media, you don't have such a harsh line between different fandoms. Sure it's usually one thing that brings people together, and the biggest fandom was the Harry Potter universe that brought us together. But even the site I used to post, which was mainly a Harry Potter fanfic site allowed fics from different fandoms. And then again I barely wrote a Harry Potter fic or two so I wouldn't consider that the fandom I've been in the longest. After a while I started posting my fics on LiveJournal and we had a pretty nice community of people but even then it was a bit of a mix and match who liked what show/book series. Those people got me into Teen Wolf and I've been very active in that fandom for multiple years, so that might technically be the longest. However, I'm pretty sure the OL/LJG fandom is starting to rival that by now 😉

J: Name a fandom you didn’t care/think about until you saw it all over tumblr.

Black Sails! That was a Tumblr influence and what a great influence lmao I ended up reading many great fics in that fandom.

Q: A ship you’ve abandoned and why.

This is a tricky question as well. Because you can naturally shift away from certain fandoms altogether with time. So for example, I don't read/write Teen Wolf fanfics anymore. But that doesn't mean I abandoned any ships there in my opinion.

I was such a Steter shipper btw in case anyone is curious and I'm still shipping them so I wouldn't say I've abandoned them. If I heard correctly, they are making a movie and who knows?

So maybe this question refers to a case where you are still active in the fandom but you don't really read/write a ship that you used to? And I'll be completely honest with you: the first ship that popped into my mind when I saw this question was John/Jamie. 😬😬😬

I know that might upset some people and it's not *quite* true that I've abandoned them. I still read a lot of fic with that ship that my very-very talented friends write and I enjoy them a lot 😘 But I don't go out of my way searching for fic with them. And unless Jack is also in the mix I also don't really write with them anymore.

Maybe I just said everything I had to say about them and now I'm sailing next to the big ship on my small floaties/pool noodles.

Or maybe canon!Jamie has just been an asshole to John long enough that I think John deserves better. 😬😅😹 (/jk. or am I?)

I AM ASKING ABOUT THE BOOKSTORE ENDGAME

okay SO bookstore endgame is the post-canon fantasy that lives in my head. Dean as a bookworm, it’s free real estate baby so if we delve into that I don’t think that John was going to encourage Dean to read, exactly. No, no it had to be someone else.

Back a fair few years, Dean and Sam on a job with Dad. Dad drops them off with a couple of hunters who offered him the job. They’re out of business now. Two women who own a bookstore, sell hunter antiquarian books on the side etc, etc. John sees two women, dumps his kids with them because It Wouldn’t Be The First Time (See: Ellen, the motel owner in the spn origins comic). John ends up leaving them there for like a month whilst he rounds up on his hunts. This is where Dean reads Vonnegut, Aesop, Homer. All those references in the show with a point of origin. Bookstore owners kind of feel for this kid, they’re seeing themselves in him and watching him solemnly get in the impala with his too-big duffle and the smile wiped off his face— it’s something they know all too well. They try to keep in contact, send jobs John’s way to keep an eye on the kids. But John being John™️, yeah he never tells Dean and Dean thinks that they just didn’t care after he left who would? Dean grows up thinking they were just looking after him, they never wanted him.

So now we’re post-canon. Dean has rescued Cas from the empty. They’re still getting used to life without Main Character Syndrome— food gets burnt, they get sick— washing goes wrong. More specifically, Sam washes Dean’s coat with his copy of Slaughterhouse in. He rifles through the machine holding shreds of damp paper and finds himself shaking with rage. He gets up, storms out of the bunker and into baby. On autopilot he drives to the only bookstore he knows the address of by heart.

The reunion is sad. Dean listens to these two women who cared so much for him and his brother, who had gone through exactly the same. He pictures perhaps what his life would have been like with them. They ask him what he’s doing now, and Dean replies with “not a whole lot, actually, thinking about retiring.”

They offer him a job, if he wants it— apartment above store too. He thinks about it, goes back to the bunker. Cas finds him in the kitchen, they still haven’t spoken about the empty deal. Dean tells Cas all about it— the copy of slaughterhouse that was destroyed in the wash to the way it ended up in his duffel bag when it was a kid. He tells Cas about the offer.

Etc, etc, they go together. They both work for the nice lesbian ex-hunter bookstore owners. They dote on cas, ruffle dean’s hair. Cas gets banned from recieving ARCs (advance reading copies) because he keeps leaving new books absolutely scathing reviews. They clean up the upstairs apartment. They learn to communicate, fall in love over and over and over again and one night when they’re closing up Cas drops a box on the desk in front of Dean. he had it mailed from some obscure county. It’s the exact same obscure cover of slaughterhouse dean had for the longest time. Dean immediately, destroyed with affection— just kisses Cas. All the feelings spill over.

Fast forward a year, Dean’s surrogate bobby-esque lesbian moms give him the keys to the bookstore. He takes over. (Continuity of my art: Salman Toor inspired piece is the opening night of the bookstore).

There’s a lot of really intricate things too that happen in this huge fic I wanna wrote of it. Like Cas cutting his hair, how Jack and Claire fit into it. At one point I wanted to bring my hunter radio idea too! But yeah. Bookstore endgame baby. Not projecting. I’m not.

is ur john fic (does it have a name??) going to be canon compliant or au? and if canon compliant, how much of the show do we have to watch to understand it? sorry for any bad english <3

(don’t worry your english is absolutely perfect <3) the fanfic does have a name, it’s called “broken road” after this song, my favorite john & dean song ever. actually thanks for reminding me bc i need to go back and backtag all of the posts i made about it with the fic title now that i’ve settled on one lol. that is. gonna take forever. wow i should have been doing that this whole time

as for how much of the show you need to watch to understand it...not very much. it’s a rewrite of episode 14.13, so it is canon compliant up to and set during season 14 (i changed some minor details, like saying cas never had to make a deal with the empty, but i’ll explain those in the author’s notes), but the most important developments are in seasons 12, 13, and 14. if you really wanted to watch all of those seasons i wouldn’t stop you because they’re AWESOMEEE, but if you wanted a shorter list of episodes, i’d hit 12.22 (for dean & mary’s dynamic), 13.01 (to meet jack + dean & jack’s dynamic), 13.23 (for dean saying yes), 14.10 (for how they dealt with michael), and 14.12 (for the ma’lak box problem). if i could only pick ONE of these, it’d have to be 14.10 or 14.12. definitely don’t watch 14.13, it’s garbage, that’s why i’m rewriting it lol.

that being said, you could probably just read the wiki articles and get the general idea if you wanted. as long as you’ve got the sparknotes version (that mary came back to life and how she had trouble adjusting, who jack even is, and that dean said yes to michael and what happened to him because of it), you should still get the idea. when writing the fic i am trying to explain past events as i reference them, so that hopefully the fic is accessible even people who haven’t watched the show in awhile. it’s like 14 years of TV so i’m not gonna get EVERYTHING, but i’m giving it my best shot lol

just a little example of “explaining” things to show you what i mean (spoilers for season 14, if you care):

Dean doesn't get easy victories. There's no such thing as a big win, not without some kind of cost. A new deal, another string, the other shoe. When you're dealing with devils, you can't be that surprised when they make off with your soul. And Dean's made a lot of pretty raw deals in his time: getting one year instead of ten before his big trip downstairs, for starters. Saying yes to Michael, and becoming his permanent cage. So far, that beats stuffing himself—Michael and all—into the unbreakable Ma'lak Box and getting Sam to drop them both off into the Pacific. So far. Time's ticking on that one. Dean's got a black belt in repression, but even he can only keep an archangel buried for so long. Sooner or later, Michael's gonna bust out of Dean's head, and then take the rest of him for an apocalyptic joyride. Talk about your fine print, right?

Inside Dean’s head, Michael's always banging on that door, and any time he slips, the banging gets worse. If he gets too pissed, too sad, too scared, too drunk—and that last one's a real pain in his ass. Dean's got be on his toes 24/7. He's barely even sleeping. No rest for the wicked, after all.

Supernatural - a retrospective

This is super self-indulgent, and I have so much else I’ve promised-- I owe a long-fic rec post, and ao3 comments, wip work, and that’s just my fandom stuff I’m behind on. *sigh*

But it’s late on a Saturday and now I’ve finished Supernatural, I want to share what I think are my top few eps, and a few other comments. I promise some of this will be different from the “greatest hits” you probably usually see, and I’ll try to make it worth your time. *wry smile*

Look, we have to have categories like: “Most Likely to Live in My Head Rent-Free for the Rest of my Life” and “Most Likely to Inspire Unnecessary Fanfiction” that are different from “Favorites,” because that’s just the cursed energy this show has. ;-)

My top five

#5 - 13.01 - “Lost and Found”

Written by: Andrew Dabb | Directed by: Phil Sgriccia

In fandom, this is most often referred to as the start of the “Grieving Widower” arc, tongue-in-cheek. Also has Alexander Calvert (Jack) walking around completely in the nude for the first third of the ep. (Neither of these are why this is in my top 5, but he has a good story about wardrobe for his ‘first day.’)

I didn’t expect much out of this episode the first time I watched it, but I’ve gone over this ‘section’ of the show maybe 3-4 times in my Netflix catch-up, and I watch this one in full every time. From Jack being...not at all what anyone expected and an unsteady vindication, to the stunning cinematography (there’s a post that compares shots to Brokeback Mountain, but I think the shots here might be better), to the sheriff who takes the time to remind her deputy that “...there’s no such thing as ‘weird.’ Everyone’s normal in their own way,” to the slow reveal of exactly how hard the events of the previous night (12x23 - All Along the Watchtower) are hitting Dean and Sam and in different ways...(how long the episode takes to reveal to you how Dean fucked up his hand, and what he was saying when he did. Augh!) The Winchesters are trying to rally, but they have been taking hits for a long time, and the cracks are showing.

#4 - 15.06 - “Golden Time”

Written by: Meredith Glynn | Directed by: John F. Showalter

Supernatural has a terrible track record with representation in all stripes. It is infamously consistent in killing off anyone minority, female, or non-White. One of the interesting things about the chaotic meta-narrative of season 15 is you can see the lack of fucks some of the writer’s room had to give about not even being subtle about tearing down that type of ‘White-male-hero-journey” now that they were in a literal “what will they do, fire me?” situation.

I’m a Cas fan, and this episode, which gives him an actual, ‘case-of-the-week’ hunter’s narrative where he gets to save the day on his own, successfully, was wonderful. I love that for him! But more than that, for me, this episode is emotional to me for other reasons-- the way Dean and Cas circle around each other on their angry phone call (with the body language! They are broadcasting so LOUD and neither can see because they’re on the phone!), Sam’s story here, where he’s inheriting things from Rowena that allow him in turn to save Eileen, to Cas’ speech and quick anger at the lake when you reflect on his entire journey of self-realization from a soldier of blind faith to an agent of free will... “You selfish little men in your positions of authority...” I just... *clears throat, grabs tissue*

#3 - 6.20 - “The Man Who Would Be King”

Written & Directed by: Ben Edlund

Speaking of Cas’ journey... I know some folks don’t like the angst and drama of the ‘Heaven and Hell’ plots of Supernatural, but I am here for it. Oh, did we need another reason to include this episode? This has some of the most metal quotes I have heard from any TV show. Ever.

I mean, look at this:

“If I knew then what I know now, I would have said: Freedom is a length of rope. God wants you to hang yourself with it.”

“Explaining freedom to angels is a bit like explaining poetry to fish.”

The delivery of: “It's not too late. Damn it, Cas! We can fix this!” “Dean, it’s not broken!” is one of those Supernatural bits that will live in my head until the end of time. All of Edlund’s episodes are among my favorites, but this (along with “5.04 - The End”) was on another level.

#2 - 5.16 - “Dark Side of the Moon”

I think of this episode every time I hear Bob Dylan sing “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.” This is kinda a giant montage episode, but the connecting concepts are so...satisfying.

“Heaven is your favorite memories.” “ It’s called the axis mundi. It’s a path that runs through heaven. Different people see it as different things. For you, it’s two-lane asphalt.” “This is your idea of heaven? Wow, this was one of the worst nights of my life.” “I don’t think I realized how long you’ve been cleaning up Dad’s messes.” “It’s awesome to finally have an application—a practical application—for string theory.” “Everyone leaves you, Dean. You noticed?” “Why is God talking to me? Gardner-to-gardener, and between us, I think he gets lonely.” “You son of a bitch, I believed in... ” Whoosh.

#1 - 4.01 - “Lazarus Rising”

Written by: Eric Kripke | Directed by: Kim Manners

So...this is the episode where Castiel, angel of thee Lord, shows up. And that’s primarily why it earns the no. 1 spot, because 80% of my enjoyment of Supernatural from this point on was Cas-adjacent. Plus this entire episode just hits. ALL OF IT. Dean’s homecoming. Ruby, my darling. Bobby’s entire vibe. Pamela Barnes, easily one of the most interesting women Supernatural ever introduced. Cas being so hot to say “Hi” to Dean he forgets he wounds people.

But beyond that-- the way the show writes their ‘oh, by the way, angels’ narrative! If you haven’t seen this episode, would you believe me if I told you that THIS EPISODE, the episode where Supernatural said “canonically, Judeo-Christian Heaven is real, btw” involves no churches but does involve a séance, a soulmark handprint brand, and a himbo angel that “gripped you tight and raised you from Perdition”...but they were all “no homo, guys” for years?

Truly no one was out here doing it like Supernatural even back in 2008.

15.18 - “Despair”

“Most Likely to Live Rent-Free in My Head for the Rest of my Life”

Written by: Robert Berens | Directed by: Richard Speight, Jr.

You know why this episode is here. It broke reality. I could be wrong-- but I’d put good money on this episode being the subject of academic theses in the future. That doesn’t automatically make for interesting story, but...

Has there ever been a case, in a mainstream US TV show where a major lead character (Cas) came out as queer so late in the game in a narratively-important way? I’m not aware of it, but I might just be behind on my television.

This episode has great writing, and (blessedly) amazing direction and blocking anyway. Check out the above gif - that is some next level foreshadowing going on in the cinematography, and this isn’t even the most remarked upon shot in this episode. (Seriously, I had to search for 40 minutes for this gif, please respect my game, lol.) Everyone who was involved in 15x18 is giddy talking about their investment, from the costume designer to the actors to the director to the writer...

...And then a bunch of them steadfastly have avoided posting much Supernatural-related since. So that’s...loud. There is a bunch of subtext in this episode that is screamingly loud; there is a bunch of text in this episode that makes several things clear fandom has been chattering over for years and years. The meta-commentary around this episode continues, months later. There are over 700 fics on AO3 with this episode tag.

I have more to say about the themes of ‘free will’ and ‘love’ and ‘identity’ tied to this episode, but seriously-- you’ve probably read 17 versions of it on Tumblr already, so.

This is the last time we see Cas, and the last time Supernatural can claim anything close to narrative consistency. For that alone, it’d earn free head-space.

“Most Likely to Inspire Unnecessary Fanfiction”

Written by: Eric Charmelo & Nicole Snyder (6.17); Brad Buckner & Eugenie Ross-Leming | Directed by: Phil Sgriccia (6.17); Charlie Carner (8.07)

Usually the show kills off it’s “one-episode” female characters, but do you know one time it didn’t? When the Moirai (the Fates - specifically Atropos, the shearer of the Threads of Fate) showed up in canon in 6.17. She was posited to have “two older sisters that were bigger than her- in every sense of the word,” ...and Castiel had to back down when she challenged him to a cosmic game of chicken over the Winchester’s lives.

Then they never returned to that idea again.

“A Little Slice of Kevin” is on here for the opposite reason -- an amazing idea that was really underwritten in the episode it showed up in. Dean Winchester has been dragging himself across the fabric of universes; the literal Word of God is in play in a warehouse in Middle America; Cas is back from Purgatory, but what does that mean, micro and macro? As a person on the street, what would it mean, or feel like, to learn you were a Prophet of the Lord, uncalled? That what you are, everything you are, is a cosmic contingency?

Maybe Fate has an opinion on all these shenanigans?

Perhaps all that doesn’t make sense, but it certainly made an impression on ~2012 me. To this day, it remains the WIP I can open up and fool myself with the ‘twist.’ I wish I remembered where I was going with it so I could finish it.

I don't think Sam ever actually "gave up hope" in the future timeline. He kept dragging Dean along with him, trying to keep fighting. But losing Eileen is what made Sam have a "death wish," according to Dean (or Chuck, maybe). I'm really not a die-hard Sam/Eileen person necessarily, I could take it or leave it. But your comments about them always seem like you're saying that they don't even really care about each other, and that's just... not true.

Okay this is gonna be a convoluted sentence, but I need everyone to follow along with this one: If anything I’m saying about Sam and Eileen’s relationship is being interpreted in such a way that the reader believes that I am implying that Sam and Eileen do not care about each other, that’s the reader’s inference, and not what I am actually saying.

It is obvious in s15, just as it was obvious in 11.11, 12.17, and 12.21 that Sam does care about Eileen. And that Eileen obviously likes Sam (and Dean, for that matter… her interactions with Dean are just about as cute, for anyone who hasn’t picked up on that… like in 12.17, more than half of her conversation ARE WITH DEAN, and Dean clearly cares about her, too. Even if it’s always been presented in a slightly different way, or possibly in a less… intense? way than her interactions with Sam.

That said… in the future timeline– that is, in CHUCK’S STORY HE WAS SHOWING TO SAM– Chuck’s STORY (which, remember, he planted Eileen in Sam’s life in 15.06 specifically to become Sam’s love interest, for the purposes of Chuck’s story) said that Sam’s had a death wish ever since Eileen died. Because that would line up with CHUCK’S STORY as it had been playing out all season that had made her into Sam’s love interest. That story also suggested that Dean… LOST THE WILL TO FIGHT after he had to lock Cas up in a Ma’lak box. Not that Dean had a death wish.

(I mean, we know this is accurate but this is how Dean personally reacts when he loses Cas. We know how he reacts when he loses anyone else– think about what he did when Charlie died. He went on a murder rampage against the Stynes for killing her. When Mary died he broke some furniture and went full bore toward both resurrecting her and stopping Jack. But without Cas, Dean loses the will to fight. Sam has… always been different. He referenced Jess in 15.04 to remind us of how he was after she died in the pilot episode. Just like John, he picked up the revenge mission and ran with it. But for Dean, Cas is different. Without Cas… Dean gives up.)

But if we are to believe this is a True Seeing of future events that WILL actually happen in reality, we have to disregard the fact that Chuck is a supremely unreliable narrator. And the guy is not a great liar. And it’s been lampshaded repeatedly this season that he’s not a particularly good storyteller either.

To Becky’s horror, all Chuck seems to care about are the monsters, and he gets angry and tries to argue when Becky tells him that NOBODY cares about the monsters. That we all care about the characters. And Chuck’s pretty much been trying to prove how great the monsters are ever since. Have you noticed that pretty much every episode this season so far has involved monsters? Ever since they got the hell rift sealed up, anyway. Ghosts and demons apparently aren’t good enough for Chuck, and from 15.04 on we’ve had vampires, werewolves, witches and djinn, a marid, werewolf, and now (FINALLY! Chuck is probably thinking) Leviathans, leviathan blossoms, a mention of Eve, and whatever that rando corpse was in Purgatory, aka Monster Heaven.

And yet, Chuck’s line is that without him in the universe, it would be Nothing But Monster Apocalypse, as if he was the one holding all that at bay. And just… dude, do you think we’re all “crazy and stupid” like you attempted to convince Dean that Sam was for telling him the truth about how you had manipulated their lives in 14.20? He pulled a similar string of lies with Amara (who saw through his lies), he pulled a similar string of lies with Becky (who still tried to be kind to him anyway, even after he treated her like a jerk). So I’m wondering how anyone trusts anything he says now, you know?

Chuck made the monsters. He LIKES the monsters. And it’s like he’s writing his ending out of spite over Becky’s critique of his “fic” in 15.04. Becky doesn’t like monsters? Doesn’t think the stakes were high enough? Well, he’ll show her! What does she know? She’s not a real writer anyway, right? Just a fanfic writer who wants them all to sit around an talk about their feelings. Ew, right?

So, yeah, this is how I approach anything that we’re told is part of “Chuck’s process,” or Chuck’s story. With the assumption that he’s lying. Because writers lie.

(This was also a staple of his character in s11. This is exactly how he wrote back then. Metatron called him out on it several times, but even then we know he was still trying to lie his way out of direct responsibility for anything. He blamed Dean for not having killed Amara (!!!????) as if that was something Dean was supposed to be able to do. He blamed Amara for “blocking him” when we’d seen her literally tearing through the world looking for him. Then after all that, he said they CAN’T kill Amara because it would create an imbalance in the universe and the universe would collapse. Pick a story and stick with it, Chuck. We also know when he writes himself into a corner, he invents something on the spot to fix it, such as Chekhov’s Equalizer Gun. Or going WAY back to 5.10 and the apocalypse that failed… The Colt, which was supposed to kill anything, failed to work on Lucifer, because it didn’t fit Chuck’s desired plot, all of a sudden there were five exceptions to the Colt’s powers. Shocker, that… >.>)

Rule of thumb: If Chuck is saying something, there’s a super good chance you should at least inspect it with a measure of doubt, run it through the BS filter for good measure, and then give it 24 hours or at least one (1) more installment of canon before you begin to trust it…

But back to your original question. If Sam and Eileen hadn’t at least LIKED each other, Sam would never have even CONSIDERED any sort of a relationship with Eileen, and Chuck’s plot would’ve been foiled a heck of a lot earlier. Chuck’s a bad writer, but he’s not THAT bad of a writer…

eta, because after posting I realized I never addressed the first part of your question: Sam gave up hope when he refused to cast the spell to lock Chuck up. That’s what Chuck is referring to. And it wasn’t anything to do with Eileen that made him “lose hope.” Which is Chuck’s phrase for what happened... maybe “lost the will to cast that spell in particular because of the risk of a specific set of consequences,” is more accurate. Because Sam remained defiant (or disbelieving of Chuck’s story) up until Chuck told him that their fate as cheesy vampires wasn’t the worst of it. The worst of it was that Sam and Dean would give up, and the world would be overrun and succumb to the monsters. That not just the Winchesters, but all of humanity, would lose. THAT is what Sam could not put at risk.

Reader is a hunter who grew up on the Campbell compound with Gwen, Mark, and Christian. She meets Samuel Campbell and Sam Winchester during a big hunt, and quickly gets together with Sam. Things get interesting when Dean enters the picture, and then when they find out Sam doesn't have his soul. This story tracks all of season six, so if you haven't seen it, this is all spoilers. The only character deaths are those that happened in canon.

[Side note: This is a fic I’m especially proud of. I fleshed out the Campbells a bit and fell in love with Gwen. Really wish we’d had more of Gwen. She could have been a badass rock star.]
