It’s Throwback Thursday on a Wednesday! because Sofie is too anxious to wait 12 more hours to post her old art!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’ve drawn some of the hallucinations that were more like “characters” which I’d experienced consistently throughout the years after being diagnosed with early-onset schizophrenia— and while looking back on the portraits I’d made as I sifted through old files, I realized I’ve only hallucinated once, very briefly and lightly, in the last 4+ years. This is a monumental difference from when I first started hallucinating.
For the majority of my teen years, I was hallucinating constantly and severely, and I was— as the youths would say— not having a very fresh and funky time, bro. I've come a long way from being a young girl who could barely leave her bedroom to eat dinner and was hearing voices 24/7 that loved to berate and belittle everything about her. I'm proud of the hard work I've put in over the years to heal, so I figured I'd post these old pieces as a way to commemorate the Herculean efforts that got me where I am today.
... Also, it's a really fun way to see a snapshot of my art journey when looking at them with the oldest on the left and the latest on the right, hehe :>

Find Your Next Plot Idea: 12 Tricks to Try
Waiting for inspiration to strike can take too long. It's also not the best way to improve your writing, since you may not write very often in-between ideas.
I've been there before. When you're getting impatient, find your next idea for a short story or potential novel by trying these simple tricks.
1. Try a Plot Generator
Generators will throw ideas at you that you might not think about otherwise. They don't always make sense, but it's fun sifting through their options!
Check out more than one to find a site you like. You could try:
Plot-Generator
Reedsy's Plot Generator
Big Huge Thesaurus' Story Generator
Cool Generator's Random Plot Points
ServiceScape's Plot Generator
2. Find Random Facts
There are other sites that pull up random facts that could inspire a creative streak. They may also help you with singular plot points your story might be missing or more details while fleshing out characters.
See if you prefer:
Mental Floss' Fact Generator
Fact Republic's Generator
This Random Fact Generator
This Other Random Fact Generator
This Other Fact Generator
3. Check the Current News Headlines
Look up the current news in another city, state, or country. Without reading the stories, see if you can imagine a plot for each headline. It can be a fun creative exercise if you stay away from heavy topics.
You could find the latest news at places like:
NPR (I like their Strange News section too!)
The New York Times
The BBC
Reuters
Global Issues
4. Think About Your Recent Dreams
Dreams don't always make sense, but they can make you think outside of the box. Maybe you recently dreamed about escaping a haunted house or running into your old crush while on a vacation across the world. It could inspire your next story or even just a small part of one.
5. Try Free Writing
Your writing may have come to a halt because you get too caught up in the process. Free writing is an excellent exercise to break out of routines and old habits.
It first started in 1973 and hasn't changed much since. All you need to do is set a timer and open a new Google doc or grab a piece of paper. When the timer begins, start writing your stream of consciousness down and don't stop writing until the timer ends.
Whatever comes to mind should end up on your paper. Don't worry about sentence structure, grammar, or spelling. The exercise will loosen your creative flow and help you think through the writer's block keeping you from your next story.
6. Do Some Digital Eavesdropping
You can always sit yourself down in a public area (like a coffee shop) and eavesdrop on other people's conversations to hear about experiences you've never thought about before. But something about that always creeped me out, so sometimes I go digital.
Scroll through social media sites like Instagram or Twitter. Look for posts with pictures or a quick caption that doesn't explain the full picture. See what's trending, what the latest celebrity gossip is. Make up stories behind it, like with the newspaper headline trick. You'll get much different ideas than you'd find on news sites without carving time into your schedule for stopping by a place in town.
7. Map Your Mind
If you've never tried mind mapping, it could be a great place to start your next brainstorming session. All you need is a central idea or theme.
Imagine picking a theme like self-love. You'd traditionally write it in the middle of a piece of paper and draw a circle or box around it. Arrows then branch off of that theme to whatever idea pops into your head when you think about it.
There's no order to the branching thought bubbles and you can branch off of those as long as you want. Eventually your words could add up into a story idea, scene, or character.
The University of Adelaide has a great example diagram if you're having a hard time picturing your mind map.
8. Write a Re-Telling
There are re-tellings of classic stories all the time. Think of Hamlet turning into The Lion King. Or the folklore that morphed into Disney princesses, who morphed into the gripping series The Lunar Chronicles.
When re-tellings are done well, they give a new perspective on a well-known theme, legend, superstition, or moral.
Many writers feel like they have to avoid re-tellings in their short stories or as future novels, but they can be powerful ways to convey meaningful storylines and themes if done well. They're also a great way to jumpstart your writing after a dry period.
9. Listen to Music
Trying to write something in a quiet room might not help your creative flow. The silence can make your critical thoughts louder than anything else or make it more tempting to set your writing aside.
It's always a good idea to try listening to music while you write. Specifically, you should select a few songs or a playlist that makes you happy. Research shows that creativity greatly improves when people listen to music that generates happiness.
There's also evidence that it's easier to focus while listening to lyric-less music.
Not sure where to start? I've got some recommended background noise apps, websites, and free playlists over on my resource list. It's got everything from rain sounds to my favorite lyric-less low-fi YouTube playlist.
10. Write Fan Fiction
The blank page is even more intimidating when you're not very familiar with your characters or setting. Fan fiction can be a balm for that. Try writing a short story about people in your latest favorite TV show, movie, or book series. You're already very familiar with those worlds, so practicing your writing skills by freestyling new arcs or scenes can be a lot of fun.
11. Analyze a Book's Plot
We all have a favorite book. Think of the one that last dazzled you or made you fall in love with reading. How did it do that?
Sometimes it helps to study an existing book you've already read. You can map it out on paper by writing down character names, inciting events, the plot points that built to the story's finale, and everything in between. Note how each point made you feel and why it mattered. You can reflect those strategies in your own work, which may solve your writer's block.
12. Watch a Documentary
There are some wild documentaries out there that will blow your mind. Pick one and enjoy it, then ask yourself what if things had gone differently? Tweaking part of an event could make it branch off into an entirely new story. It's basically writing fan fiction, but it may interest people who are more into instructional media.
---
When you find something that works, enjoy it! Then try something else the next time you want to create a plot. Writing is a craft that changes with time. It's better to have a well-tried bag of inspirational tricks than sit around and wait for a story to pop up in your mind.

I played stardew valley for 12 hours on my day off (this post has nothing to do with stardew though)
and idk about you guys but whenever i get absorbed in something to the point of not reaching for my Devices to go on the Internet (mainly twitter if im being honest) its always so disorienting to go back to my app of choice and just see everyone Complaining. i also realize that i am complaining in this very post but hear me out. the whiplash of it all was unreal. it also isnt the first time ive experienced this feeling
it really gives me perspective (especially after i draw for a day straight, go out with friends, binge a show, or do anything worthwhile and enjoyable) when i finally come online to see art and shitposts only to find that everyone is just fucking miserable about everything all the time, even about the things they enjoy. it makes me wonder about what im gaining and—more importantly—what im losing by spending so much time (up to 3 hours a day sometimes!) on elon’s hellhole. and tumblr is skating on thin ice too with the recent events re: the CEO and AI and the lackluster everything about this site
in a way i regret not having tried to join fandom earlier, mainly because i feel like i missed the golden era of it, but also because being in fandom seems extremely un-fun these days as a direct result of how social media operates. but maybe im better off for it. maybe im better off for not having my enjoyment of something tied to looking up latest episode reactions, meme-y fanart, reading theories or fic to be able to “enjoy myself” when engaging with the things i like. i don’t have to sift through people moaning and groaning and discoursing about every little thing when we got Real World Problems to worry about. ive hit a point where i could probably just go back to being completely offline, because who else but me is going to make the things that i want to see anyway?
all this to say that if i ask you for some alternate contact in the near future, you’ll know its because SNS is fucking radioactive and im not trying to become the hulk

Realizing How Important Storytelling Is To Art
For a lot visual artists, writing fully fleshed out stories doesn’t seem to be as widely an exercised skills. Many have scripts, storyboards, outlines, footnotes, or loose ideas in their reference folders or notes apps but it can be hard to connect the dots all the way. I myself find writing to be pretty taxing (thank you short attention span) while I do love making lots of unsorted detailed lists of traits spread out among characters and little factoid sheets, telling a full cohesive story was a bit harder to get into.
Tumblr media
For some of my latest character development project, I’d imagined a world in which religion and culture was heavily developed around astrology and astronomy on a planet where humans and gods were once the same thing, the effects of which can even be seen even in a post modern wire-punk dystopia. I had some ideas I thought were cool and ideas for outfits and quirks but not much to tie it all together. It wasn’t until I found myself no longer satisfied with just doing that alone, looking at what I developed thus far, that I remembered one of the key aspects of growth as an artist; references. If you need pictures of tigers or knees so you draw tigers and knees correctly, it stands to reason you also shouldn’t rely on the confines of your brain to help you write a fleshed out made up universe.
For this character, Jet, I set him up with some cool animal transformation powers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also didn’t know where his powers came from. He just needed to have them and be the way he was because it seemed really cool. When I started questioning other aspects of my designs (why is this character some sort of patron saint of moon worship with healing powers and why does she have an annoying talking rabbit god side kick? And what does she want with this dude? Why didn’t I make the rabbit a backstory and also visually cuter?)
A while ago, I had gotten a book on astrology on a bargin-bin surfing whim and lately I’ve been sifting through it in bits and pieces at a time in the mornings. Right now, I’m finishing the long decoding each western zodiac sign. I’m not a strong believer in astrology but I did find it interesting and it lead me to research on non western perceptions of the “zodiac” and where there were differences and similarities. I looked up how they’re used in modern terms and what they meant back when they were first a thing. I even dabbled in chakras and their ties to astronomy in some spiritual practices. Inspired by my research, I started cobbling some things together like wet sand into a sand castle.
If your zodiac sign and its traits could have some sort of iconic embodiment, it could be cool animal powers. Perhaps since gods separated themselves from humans and fled to the stars, the moon, the sun, to other planets, then their relation to your zodiac sign could be significant. Jet is a Leo born in the year of the monkey and born during a pretty improbable alignment of planets closest to the earth during a solar eclipse and is therefore a special case special boy. (The only challenge is making that interesting while not letting it overshadow his actual character) Building a magic system with a more clear idea of what my world looks like and having intention behind what I’m pulling from and where to use it was a lot easier as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I even managed to change the look of my costar to suit the color coding theme and to look less like a weird monk of vague lineage and denomination and more like a kid who only really has a magical bunny as a parent, teacher, and friend for the longest before clinging to Jet. (Not to mention change her rabbit pal drastically to a more cohesive design...)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only was I feeling more confident in my design work, but I was having fun working on this project again. I’d encourage everyone to do a little homework if they’re feeling stuck as well but please keep in mind that you’ll want to do so mindfully. You have to first have any idea at all of what you’d like, an overall theme, and a place and time where your story happens. Consider what you’re basing the world you’re building on. You can look up significant historical events or scientific breakthroughs as a basis for the world building. I’d also recommend keeping notes next your concepts as you’re working them over lest you design something really cool that you fall in love but that is totally ill fitting to what you’re making that look FOR.

You know, I've only had it a few times, but I feel like the closest I've ever felt to romantic attraction is when I'm making up worlds with someone else. I don't RP with people very often. But the times I have, and managed to do so at length always had such a power in my life. Writing creatively with other people feels a bit like saying, "I think you're clever enough to play God with" and when it's really good and you're matching up well together I feel like I'm flying through ideas with each exchange of a draft. The excitement of "oh you took us there! I love it. What will you do if I shift us this way?" the slight nerves of "oh will you like it? Did you like this? Are you as excited to see my posts to you as I am yours? I don't actually care where we end up when the story's over, I just know I'm having fun any which way we get there, because I'm with you." And that's what I feel like folks describe romantic attraction as. It's magnetizing and while it takes work to sustain, it didn't take work to fall into it, and it didn't feel scary either. So many of my abusive relationships didn't take work to get into either. No work except tricking myself that the woosh of fear and hunger for someone's approval was excitement to see them, to be chosen by them. As I probe the wounds from this latest round (unfortunately my longest bout with trouble yet) I find myself realizing how often I wasn't having any fun doing the dance of those partnerships, even when I was nailing it. I just felt frantic and sad and so desperate to please the other person. And that was a pretty bleak realization to have. I kept sifting through all the different relationships I've had trying to find a glimmer of hope that I had some sense of what healthy romantic love could be. Of what it felt like to find a river that you can flow with not one that tosses you ass over elbow in the rapids. And then I found writing, creating, play. The binders of drawings passed back and forth between my teenage besties and I. The memory of an AOL chat roleplay with another. Spitballing with a lover in the dark, laughing as we take our favorite characters and paint them with our own angle of light. There in every stroke of a pen that drives me wild, "You're brilliant." There in the beat afterwards when I can't contain the ideas flowing through me in response to you and I'm scribbling on the paper bag from my lunch, "What if it looked like this? That's such a good idea, I can't wait to show you!" There, in those relationships, I never pushed myself to improve my craft out of fear of failing to meet the other person's expectations. In those relationships, we'd bounce the ball of ideas back and forth, running up and down the court pulling trick shots. Everything was saturated by the perfect moment of playing after sunset as a kid. Knowing I had to go home soon and home wasn't so great, but right here, right now, I'm with you, and we are safe and that is wonderfully, beautifully enough. Creative relationships are that same haven. Life is scary and I am no longer scared to go home, but the world still yaws open with the wounds of hostile rules from a handful of vicious hateful people. But right here, I am with you, between the lines on the page and we are safe and that is wonderfully beautifully enough.
And the ways I push myself in those relationships, that stretch of muscle from new growth doesn't hurt, the effort is exciting because I feel the way my art becomes better in real time. My heart takes over with this urge of "you understand what I'm trying to get at with my art! You see me! I want you to see me more, more, more! Look what I can do! Let me see you, too! I want you to show me, I'm dying for it!" Because the thing about a creative relationship is, you can't keep your heart out of art. So when someone really gets your art, understands what you were trying to put out with your work and then can be in conversation with that? That's so phenomenally alluring. The heartsong of "you get me" woos me in art more than anywhere else. When someone gets me and then puts out art that sets recognition ringing in my head like windchimes? When I am desperately excited for them to share their creative work with me? I'm in love, then aren't I? If I can't wait to hear about your latest workshop ideas, If I want to see the smudged ballpoint sketches you doodled out on the nightstand at 3am If I don't even finish reading your post before my mind is singing with ideas of what to type back to you If you can show me some thing that you've made and I'm so over the moon with the beauty of it that I just have to kiss you If the pleasure that comes from you noticing a little detail in my work, one that I polished just to catch the beholders eye, rings sweeter from your lips than others What other thing could we call this, but love? Sure, I've never wanted a house with any of these people, or to marry them or do any of the other checklist things that would beget a romantic relationship, but how is it any less romantic to say, "I want to create with you, again and again and again and maybe kiss you sometimes, in between" just because that desire for me doesn't magically transform me into someone looking to be a spouse blouse? This is why I stay saying i'm aromantic, because it feels like the only acceptable form of romantic relationship is "you have to want to do date type things together, and eventual live together, and pledge the world to each other as lovers." I don't want to pledge this world to anyone else but myself. But I want to make worlds with other people. I want those to be gifts of devotion and a place that is "ours." But I don't want to compromise my life for lovers any more than I compromise it for my platonic friends.

Lol! Some more reliable leaks accounts have sources in casting or production, some connect with people near the set. There was the guy who did fly a drone over filming 😭😭 it’s all meant to be in good fun and to hype fans over what might happen, but it’s become a race to report on something first, regardless of how true it is. We’ve been promised Daemon and Rhaenyra fighting side by side in battle, Aemond killing the Strongs at Harrenhal with Larys in tow, and Rhaenyra in disguise at the KL riots 😵‍💫 None of which seem to be very true at all. The latest one was another Daeron casting- an account posted that this one actor was confirmed for the role, and then followed up that post 30 min later with “lol jk”. It’s just become spreading fake info around for likes and it’s frustrating for people who do actually want to get excited over something as small as Jason Lannister looking cunty on the battlefield 😭
yeah it does sound like a quagmire out there. at the end of the day people wanting to get excited over asoiaf developments (of any kind) is normal. but another year of this doesn't sound v sustainable for one's peace of mind. my personal advice would be to revisit other parts of canon - at least it will spare you the headache of sifting through fake news. for example, the hate fire & blood gets in the hotd fandom is way overblown and i don't even think the majority of show viewers have even read it.

How to Get the Most Out of Product Reviews
Tumblr media
Product reviews are a great way to get a feel for a particular item. Not everyone knows everything, so taking the time to look into the features of a product before you buy it can save you both time and money. A good product review site will also give you an idea of what other users are saying about the same item.
Some sites do more than just provide reviews; they also help you determine what to buy and where to buy it. These are especially helpful if you are trying to decide between several different products.
One of the best sites for this is Consumer Reports. This non-profit organization does a lot of testing and surveys to bring you up to speed on the most effective products. It also has a large library of product reviews that can be found in its archives. Their unbiased opinions can help you avoid making a bad decision. You can click the following website for more info on product review sites.
Another great product reviews website is Amazon. They have millions of products for sale and make it easy to search for what you are looking for. You can also filter reviews by star rating to find the best rated items.
In addition to reviewing products, this website also provides a forum that can help you learn about the ins and outs of the latest gadgets and technology. For example, if you are considering purchasing a new TV, you can read about other users' experiences with similar models.
A product review website can be a helpful marketing tool for your business. There are many ways to use the information you gather, from highlighting popular features to promoting your products to your customers. To ensure that you get the most out of your reviews, you should first choose which product review site is best for your needs. Several factors are worth keeping in mind when deciding on a product review site: what types of people will be visiting the site, the type of products you sell, and the ease of posting reviews. Click here to learn more about product reviews.
Having a solid product review strategy is essential to your business' success. The right website can help you attract customers who have never heard of your product before and give you valuable feedback to improve your offerings. Reviews can also be a fun way to keep your customers happy. Many sites charge a fee for certain features, but a few are free. If you are trying to sift through hundreds of reviews, it may be worth investing in a paid subscription to a reliable product reviews site.
For a more comprehensive product reviews experience, consider Capterra. This site offers detailed user reviews of over 50 thousand different products and services. Users can also compare products, customer support, and pricing in order to determine what's right for them.
Other websites that are worthy of a mention include Techradar, Top Ten Reviews, and Trustpilot. Each of these sites has its own unique features and benefits. While the other websites mentioned above offer more, all of these sites are worth checking out for their own purposes. Check out this post for more details related to this article: https://www.huffpost.com/entry/products-with-five-star-reviews_l_631a9409e4b0ed021df0acc2.

3 POEMS by Dana Miller
MX-76
Sneerwise, I’ve seen better Dearborn, without the metal I’d go on to abort you like any other paperweight hitchhiking across my belly and just that fast Grace Kelly has figured out the new math, I’m afraid and lordess, but you’re a strict equation Despite the munitions manifest under the crown of your abdication I just keep on loving you like caloric restriction and late-70s cocaine stretching myself out like St. Swithin’s Day across your salt lick whole oceans of Tawny Kitaen Ready for my Helen Reddy moment I’d sober up if I were you The flecks of Roberta Flack in me will leash every lime tiger leaping out of your 43rd-floor window with a piano strapped to its back
It Glows Under The Half-Smirk
the things you learn while killing yourself... down the end of your own dick, I got my comeuppance quick. this wasn’t like ingestion of the ancestor.
the things you’ll hear in a drowned meadow... I used to think you were a nice bunch of guys, ever out of cigarettes, packs on packs of lies. you thought you burned all the blooms of my life. shark-faced cars for the shark-toothed wife
the way things will phrase themselves in a dream… the porcelain horseshoes of your bent vision. the drugs in your dance have all ditched me, by and by. what’s left is streaks of lightning-blonde--celestial harlot dye.
no truck now for the very idea of you, the two times needles, the twice j’taime. whyever wouldn’t I get off my face? it’s hard, after all, to have fins in this place, where pelicans regard the curvature of the world, and your doormat-ador sneers-- seven full galaxies of dream on.
Last Lighthouses a riff for the faithless majority
You’ll come to know the type You’ve given them all 13 years or more--full of hummable introspection and the most famous rock stars in the world--to say nothing of your dose-dense soul bandying about your hopes and fears built entirely on bracellae and boustrophedon They will come to your birthday parties and you will go to them at Christmas It will seem the safest and most naturally warm thing in the world to lean your full weight on the concrete of their love (though you might as well be giving birth in the High Arctic) Ta, but how the best ones will swear they love you Til you roundly disappoint yourself and believe It’s only when your weight-bearing hand goes crashing through what you thought was such an indomitable, vertical construction of care that you see it was always made of wet newspaper--and you, my dear, are just a penny gaff girl in the back rooms of their subconscious public houses Then, they’ll quietly sneak round the sticky corners of your rawest self—of the actual show-up time—like white privilege guilt-trippers always do in the face of the real ghetto into invisibility into convenience into convention into covering for him--he is their son, after all (even if they would say they didn’t raise him to act like this) there are twins here for sure, but never once (or ever) a twin flame. To the comforts of conformity, even your last lighthouses will bend Away from responsibility and respectability Away from decency and all their debts you owe Away from everything you thought they’d be weddings don’t count, didn’t you know? Ohhh.......You thought they meant always? worse: you thought they meant like you do—didn’t you? Oh what a laugh-a-minute you are Remember? They even told you how funny and fun you are for parties they don’t admit going to What a lift you give to others, they praise! What a joy to all their days! you should always be around, except when you shouldn’t. and you, precious little idiot, you believed there weren’t any shouldn’ts just because you don’t have any for them—didn’t you? Awww....did you write them a Valentine too? Ha. Sorry, but the joke’s absolutely on you. When you’ve been dead about a week curled up like a conch
on the kitchen floor crying hysterically, on the hour every hour, like a beaten child and every bit as confused watching the door and mapping the bruise This is when you’ll realize that they have always been irrelevant It was only ever your heart feasting on the time their mouse your elephant --trunk and memory, that is. For a flash your tear-gasps will morph into insano-giggles as you imagine telling them to go fuck themselves straight off Then you dream of tricking them into a lunch date where really you’re going to FedEx their whole human bodies, post haste, to the same ruinous wasteland where they’ve so nonchalantly annexed you But you can’t find the address. Even after sifting meticulously through whatever shards remain of your blown-out heart, it isn’t there. Damn. Lucifer probably bought it off Judas and stuffed the only copy in his back pocket for safekeeping. in Hell all the prettiest ones are sooo smart. like they always said you were Funny. Rolling over to try and die one more time again, you will bump noses with the one and only Michael Hutchence, right there stretched out next to you, but not quite how you always dreamed it rather like a canebrake of the afterlife like an invigilator this is autoplatonic strangulation after all Devil Inside and that Oh God, how you love(d) that bacchus boy Oh Mab, how you willed this fall Eventually, once you’ve died all you can die and died some more something invisible will remind you of Patti Smith and you’ll remember that you have to get up off the kitchen floor You still have to get up every day and dress in battered menswear like her so you can write revolutionary poems—but be the kind of skinny only artistic girls can get Even if you don’t yet have a Robert Mapplethorpe to switch stripey shirts with in the paint-spatter of afternoon light Even if you still relentlessly wait for them, sometimes, late later, latest in the grin-less night.

So right now, as I design my latest boys, I find myself wondering how other people do character design. Is there a specific process you go through when you're designing a character, or are you a "see what comes out of the pen" sort?
Tumblr media
ooooh, what an interesting ask! character design has been a focus of mine for a couple of years now, and i’m definitely still learning, but it’s been really fun to get into!
i’d say i’m definitely the type of person to go through a specific process. a part of that for me is that i like to keep my number of original characters small and manageable for my pea-brain, so at any given time when i make a new one, there are going to be pieces of shelved characters and stories that i can sift through for ideas i find particularly compelling. i guess that’s sort of... cannibalistic, but it’s an important step that lets me create a character i know will hold my interest, since there are already ideas in it i previously found compelling but never got to fully explore. and going into character design with at least one major concept gives me a starting point to build on.
for example, the concept for my dnd character paris was “what if an ‘evil orc warlord’ was killed by an adventuring party, then brought back to life as a healer for his virtues?” my 7th sea character cosmo is “a foppish idiot merchant prince who only ended up in a pirate crew because he was too cowardly to show himself when they took over his ship.” my monsterhearts character butch started as “aloof, bitchy, popular vampire kid who gave up on having real friends because he didn’t know how to deal with being immortal.” with tabletop characters especially, i like to make a character who can be easily affected by other players’ choices too, so they tend to develop a lot over the course of a game, since that’s where the fun is for me there.
i think the other important starting point for my designs is setting. for tabletop, there’s a lot of variation! but in general, having an idea of where someone comes from and where their story is set (both small and large scale) makes it easier for me to determine how they might dress, what they carry with them, what their priorities are, etc.
something i think about a lot with character design is actually something dean ambrose said about pro wrestling personas: “someone should be able to take one look at you and know exactly what kind of person you are.” sometimes i play this straight and sometimes i subvert it, but it always gives me a lot to think about and helps me trim down ideas to a design i tend to feel is more concise, and communicates the point of itself without a lot of fanfare.
Tumblr media
here are paris, butch, and cosmo from up above - while their characters have changed and will continue to, i still think their concepts are clear in their designs, which are all pretty different from one another.
...anyway, this is probably more post than you wanted, lol. but thanks for asking!!

New Reputation: Taylor Swift shares intel on TS7, fan theories, and her next era
Snakes begone. The 29-year-old superstar is back with a new album and a new outlook on life. We go inside the pop monarch's latest chapter.
THE PALM TREES ARRIVED IN FEBRUARY, seven in all, set against a pastel blue backdrop with superimposed stars. It appeared that a new Taylor Swift era was upon us — that the old happy-go-lucky Taylor was not, in fact, dead. Or did it? It wasonly an Instagram photo, just one more picture in an infinite content scroll. But it also came from a pop star known for prodigious hint-dropping, whose fans turn every piece of info into an online archaeological dig.
As expected, the summery post sent Swifties sifting through each detail with a fine-tooth comb. What did the trees symbolize? An overdue vacation? A recently purchased beach house? A secret palm-frond collection? Or maybe, as many surmised, it was new music. One Twitter user predicted that the number of stars in the background of the photo hinted at a single drop: “There’s about 60/61 [stars]️. There’s 61 days until April 26, FRIDAY, a SINGLE RELEASE day!” Another said it was the unofficial announcement of her next LP: “Okay so in this picture there are 4 palm trees on the left (4 country albums). There are two palm trees on the right (2 pop albums). There is one large palm tree in the middle. This represents her new album.” These may sound like ludicrous conspiracy theories — for the record, they were mostly correct — but they fit firmly within the Taylor Swift Musical Universe (it’s like the Marvel Cinematic Universe but with more guitars and fewer Stan Lee cameos).
“I posted that the day that I finished the seventh album,” says Swift about the photo. “I couldn’t expect [my fans] to know that. I figured they’d figure it out later, but a lot of their theories were actually correct. Those Easter eggs were just trying to establish that tone, which I foreshadowed ages ago in a Spotify vertical video for ‘Delicate’ by painting my nails those [pastel] colors.”
It’s now April, and the 29-year-old pop star is in a Los Angeles photo studio, giving her first sit-down magazine interview in three years. She wants to discuss the art of placing hints inside her work, as well as the upcoming record, which she recorded as soon as she finished the Reputation Tour. She’s also keen on detailing her own obsessions, talking up the TV shows, books, and songs that help shape her outlook on life.
Over the past 13 years, Swift has perfected the pop culture feedback loop: She shares updates about her life and drops hints about new music, which fans then gobble up and re-promote with their own theories, which Swift then re-shares on her Tumblr or incorporates into future clues. It’s like a T-Swift-built Escher staircase of personal memories and moments that tease what’s next. “I’ve trained them to be that way,” she says of her fans’ astute detective work. Swift is a pop culture fanatic herself (see: the jean jacket she’s wearing on the EW cover) and has an innate understanding of the lengths her audience will go to be a part of the original creation. “I love that they like the cryptic hint-dropping. Because as long as they like it, I’ll keep doing it. It’s fun. It feels mischievous and playful.”
Through this approach, Swift has designed the ultimate artistic scavenger hunt — and it’s easy to get swept up in its drama, even if you don’t listen to her music. Her moments aren’t always hidden, either. Sometimes Swift highlights aspects of her world just so fans feel like they’re on the journey with her. Like the time in March 2018 when pop singer Hayley Kiyoko was accused of shading Swift after mentioning her name during an interview. On Tumblr, Swift re-shared a fan’s post, adding commentary that defended Kiyoko, which immediately dispelled any conflicts between the two artists; Swift’s post subsequently received more than 29,000 notes. Four months later, she invited Kiyoko on stage during the Reputation Tour to sing her hit “Curious.” Kiyoko returned the favor when she had Swift join her that December at a benefit on behalf of the LGBTQ organization the Ally Coalition to perform “Delicate.” Fans of both artists were elated by the mutual support.
The feedback loop also extends outside of music. In October 2018, Swift broke her silence about politics by publicly endorsing two candidates for office in her adopted state of Tennessee, while encouraging her followers to register to vote. She kept up the civic momentum through Election Day when she asked fans to post selfies after voting; Swift then eagerly re-promoted her favorites on Instagram stories.
This practice of sharing and re-sharing and sharing again is why listeners consider Swift one of the world’s most accessible pop stars, someone willing to not only interact with her audience but invite them to secret listening sessions, or make the occasional surprise visit to their wedding or prom. It’s a symbiotic relationship, one that, as Swift tells EW, helped her dig out of the darker era of reputation. “It’s definitely the fans that made that tonal shift in the way I was feeling,” she says. “Songwriters need to communicate, and part of communicating correctly is when you put out a message that is understood the way you meant it. reputation was interesting because I’d never before had an album that wasn’t fully understood until it was seen live. When it first came out everyone thought it was just going to be angry; upon listening to the whole thing they realized it’s actually about love and friendship, and finding out what your priorities are.”
Then, during the Reputation Tour, she had an epiphany: that despite the caricature that she thought had been created of her, there were many people who saw what others had simply refused to. “I would look out into the audience and I’d see these amazing, thoughtful, caring, wonderful, empathetic people,” she says. “So often with our takedown culture, talking s— about a celebrity is basically the same as talking s— about the new iPhone. So when I go and I meet fans, I see that they actually see me as a flesh-and-blood human being. That — as contrived as it may sound — changed [me] completely, assigning humanity to my life.”
At tour’s end, she channeled that positive energy into the studio, recording the new album in just under three months. But the fast pace won’t mean a short LP. Swift confirmed that her seventh record (she hasn’t announced a title yet; the working nickname among fans is TS7) will include more songs than any of her previous releases. “I try not to go into making an album with any expectation,” she says. “I started to write so much that I knew immediately it would probably be bigger.”
The project will also feature a mix of old and new collaborators (on the candy-coated lead single “ME!” Swift brought in Panic! At the Disco frontman Brendon Urie and coproducer Joel Little, both of whom she had never worked with), but she is unsurprisingly coy about doling out much more information, as if doing so would break the carefully honed T-Swiftian feedback loop. “There’s a lot of a lot on this album,” she says. “I’m trying to convey an emotional spectrum. I definitely don’t wanna have too much of one thing…. You get some joyful songs and you get the bops, as they say.” There’s also, she adds, some “really, really, really, really sad songs,” but “not enough to where you need to worry about me.”
She gives us one more clue: The true distinction between TS7 and reputation is in the delivery. “This time around I feel more comfortable being brave enough to be vulnerable, because my fans are brave enough to be vulnerable with me. Once people delve into the album, it’ll become pretty clear that that’s more of the fingerprint of this — that it’s much more of a singer-songwriter, personal journey than the last one.”
The past month has seen a deluge of Swift activity, from the release of the new single to dropping more hints in interviews about the record and its title, which is apparently hidden somewhere inside the “ME!” music video (current fan guesses include Kaleidoscope and Daisy). But if the Easter eggs from the pop star seem like a business-as-usual routine, she says this album does indeed mark a new era of her life, where she’s been better able to prioritize what’s important to her.
“Our priorities can get messed up existing in a society that puts a currency on curating the way people see your life,” she says. “Social media has given people a way to express their art. I use it to connect with fans. But on the downside you feel like there are 3 trillion new invisible hoops that you have to jump through, and you feel like you’ll never be able to jump through them all correctly. I — along with a lot of my friends and fans — am trying to figure out how to navigate living my life and not just curating what I want people to think living my life is. I’m not always able to maintain a balance, and I think that’s important for everyone to know about. We’re always learning, and that’s something that I also had to learn — that I’ve got to be brave enough to learn. Learning in public is so humiliating sometimes…. Do I feel more balanced in my life than I ever have before? Um, probably yeah. But is that permanent? No. And I think being okay with that has put me in a bit of a better position.” Strong words to live by, to quote, to re-share, to tweet back to her, and see if she’ll respond.

The Mechanisms Starter Guide And Rec List
In light of my recent binge of All of the Mechanisms’ songs and albums and also a lot of their short stories, I thought I would compile my thoughts and recommendations into one post for when I inevitably yell about them to the friends I have willing to listen. I have somehow accumulated a handful of Magnus Archives followers in the last couple weeks, as well, so this may be a good starting place for those interested in checking out That Band Everyone Keeps Saying Jonny (and Basira and Nikola’s VAs) Are In.
What they are: The Mechanisms albums are basically musical stories. Some albums are an entire story in themselves, with alternating narration tracks with tracks that are characters in the story singing. Other albums are anthologies, where each track tells a different, self contained story or snapshot of a story. Almost all of these stories feature queer characters, often revolving around them. Every single story ends somewhere between bittersweet to tragically, and body count is high all around, so content warnings for violence and a lot of death for all of these. All opinions are my own and extremely biased. First, the Mechanisms’ four full story albums in order of which ones I like more. Then, comments on the anthology albums.
1) The Bifrost Incident (link)
Genre: Sci Fi Lovecraftian Horror.  Summary: Set in a universe wherein Asgard is a conquering empire and Midgard (Earth) is an occupied planet. We follow a beleaguered transport official as he sifts through the surveillance footage found in the ruins of a crashed train. Odin’s train, which was to revolutionize space travel before it vanished on its maiden voyage decades ago. We’re introduced to four familiar figures from Norse mythology as the narrator tries to figure out which one of them crashed the train....
The genre gives you a clue as to how that ends.
Comments: I’d heard this album a couple years before I got into the Magnus Archives, and it still holds up as my favorite even after hearing the rest. The story and framing is, imo, the most solidly done out of all four albums, and the ending is poignant and emotionally satisfying even thought it is not, strictly speaking, happy. Which makes sense, given it’s their latest one and comes with the most experience. Absolutely fantastic depictions of Loki and Sigyn in this- this is also one of the very few Norse adaptations that seems to depict Loki as trans which is a major plus.
--
Once Upon A Time (In Space) (link) Genre: Sci-Fi Fairy Tale Mashup Summary: This album takes place in the middle of a long and bloody war between the evil King Cole and the rebellion fighting against his attempted conquest of the known universe. We’re introduced to numerous characters taking part, from foot soldiers to the rebel leader (Snow White) to the general (Rose Red) the king has captured and cloned to make an army of super soldiers, to the general’s fiancée (Cinderella), desperately searching for her lost love.
Comment: The story on this is pretty fun, and this album has my favorite collection of songs out of all of these. I’m still relistening to them all on repeat currently. It’s just a collection of remixes of old, familiar tunes from Good King Cole to the Tetris theme song. It’s also got my favorite of the band cameos, if you follow those. Also, you know that thing Magnus Archives did where it gave us touching hopeful moments before pulling the rug out from under them? Yeah that’s a Theme of Jonny’s, it seems.
Also very important is a prose epilogue called Ever After (link) that immediately follows up on the ending of the album proper and also answers what happened to Briar Rose. There are a bunch more codas to Once Upon A Time on their site as well (link), as well, detailing backstories of various characters.
And Alice (link) is a song set 60 years later and is very, very fun.
--
High Noon Over Camelot (link)
Genre: Sci Fi Western Summary: Gweneviere, Lancelot, and Arthur are three badass gunslingers in an old, rusted, very hot spaceship where a bunch of people are eking out an existence in harsh conditions. They're also all canonically dating each other. We follow The Trio as they take over a city (Camelot), Arthur loses his whole tribe to the Roving Saxon Bandits (except he doesn’t know they spared his kid and raised him as their own). A zealous preacher shows up and starts a quest for the grail, which is the only thing that can save the station.
Comments: Third on here because, while I may have spent a day and a half listening to the preacher's song on repeat, most of the other songs didn’t jump out at me quite the same way as songs on the previous two albums did. All the same, it’s a very neat concept with interesting characters, and other people will have different music taste than me! Bonus points for canon poly romance and canon trans Mordred.
--
Ulysses Dies At Dawn (link)
Genre: Dark Sci Fi Summary: In a dystopian city ruled over by the wealthy (Olympians) who have made themselves all immortal at the direct expense of the poor, we follow one war-hero-turned-drunk as a band of Four Misfit Ruffians beat him up for his Secret Vault With An Ultimate Weapon In it. Each of our five characters give their backstories, weaving a picture of the state of the city as they do, as they progress through several trials needed to open the vault.
Comments: There’s some nice worldbuilding happening here, but as you might guess by its place on this list this album drew me in the least of the four. I do wanna give a shoutout to it, though, for ending on the happiest note of all four albums. Like. Everyone still dies, but there’s a deep, peaceful note to the last song that makes it so you can’t feel too bad about that.
--
There are two anthology albums (Tales to be Told, link, and Tales to be Told II, link) and a single in addition to the previously mentioned ones. These are a bit of a hodge podge of songs from stand alones, to songs relating to the Mechanism band members’ personas, to songs attached to one of the story albums.
Firstly, the Mechanisms songs. Every story album features some sort of cameo from the band itself, and the band is what ties everything together into the same universe. Every band member in the Mechanisms has their own character, as the concept behind the Mechanisms is that they are a ship full of immortal serial killers who fly around and sing in between wiping out planets for fun. All of their shows are done in-character. There are four origin songs scattered through both anthology albums, and there is no way to tell which ones they are aside from looking through their website and putting them together. All four of these songs, however, can also be found in a liveshow Revenge of Spaceport Mahon (link), with additional context and commentary. If you’re interested in learning more about the strange people who keep making cameos in all of the story albums, it’s a very good place to start.
Studio versions of the songs featured in Revenge of Spaceport Mahon, in order, because the audio isn’t always great:  - One Eyed Jacks (link) - Jonny D’Ville (Jonny’s character) - Gunpowder Tim vs The Moon Kaiser (link) - Gunpowder Tim, & also a solo by the Toy Soldier, aka Jessica Law, Nikola’s VA - Lucky Sevens (link) - Ashes O’Reilly (Frank Voss, Basira’s VA) - Lost in The Cosmos (link) - DrumBot Brian
Additionally: The Ignominious Demise of Dr. Pilchar (link), and several short stories on their website (link).
--
Other Notable Recs
A single, Frankenstein (link) Summary: Frankenstein is a programmer who made a sentient AI who rebelled when humanity tried to shut it down after it tried to self-replicate. It’s a gorgeous song all through and I love it a lot.
Notable stand-alones from the anthologies  Stranger (link) - Oh my love, what madness can this be? / In your place a monster I do see? Actaea and Lyssa (link) - Sister don't you know me sister don't you know me don't you know me … Twisted Threads (link) -  We don't deceive / We just twist the way that they perceive

Jenny’s Belated Live Blogging - 12th February 2020
- extra belated today. my office is a little hectic right now with the move.
- maybe it’s cause I was drawing and I didn’t have to watch commercials, but that episode felt really fast today.
- the Vanity stuff is...a thing. I wish the Vanity fans actually posted more in the tags because I would kind of like to know their thoughts on this stuff without having to sift through the twitter crazies. I just want to know what their actual diehard fans think. Because for me, this latest bit of “angst” feels very plotty set between the set piece that was Graham’s murder week and the upcoming kidnapping and hostage situation. I mean, on one hand, this is absolutely a recurring argument that they’ve been having so it makes sense, but it’s also come so soon after the last version that I’m just like...hmmm...is this ever going to go anywhere? I just keep waiting for them to really get somewhere with this that’s not just Charity swearing she will change and then things going back to the status quo until the next time. I want to see them grow and evolve as a couple.
- Their wedding stuff continues to feel haphazard to me too. I mean they shoved their almost wedding into Graham week and now Charity is throwing out the idea that they take their honeymoon anyway even though they didn’t even get married. But it’s clearly just so Charity can think that Vanessa went off on the honeymoon without her when she gets kidnapped. I mean, I know often, weddings are plotty but I just think if they’re really going to continue to commit to this relationship, they should do more for it. And that includes really digging deeper into their issues and letting them learn something and become stronger as a couple, true partners in crime so to speak.
- I tried really hard to get through all of that without comparing them to Robron but just know...I was thinking about it the whole time. I can’t help it. They are my frame of reference for everything, even the stuff that didn’t work as well.
- I can’t believe Mandy ran into Pierce. Haha. They’re lucky they have so many people in the village these days that never knew him. But honestly, he’s just chilling out there in the middle of the street. Open your eyes people! It’s like I want them to see a map of everywhere he’s been after this is all over so they can know just how blind they were.
- Pierce’s glasses are still insane. Who wears glasses like that? But hey, nice cover story there Pierce. Also, I still really hate that Al has just slotted himself in there as the new Graham. Why don’t they understand that this is not a good role for anyone?
- I like Detective Rhona going to discuss things with Marlon. I love that Marlon is constantly like “everyone hated Graham...oh right....sorry”
- Marlon saying he’s just saying Cain’s name loudly all the time was great. I like that this is every Dingle’s strategy upon entering prison at HMP Hotten. Too bad Robert is too far away to use that tactic.
- Moira was less annoying today. She still grated a bit and I don’t know how she’ll be around Nate but I’m glad she’s actually getting her shit together and I always like protective Moira. So her with the shotgun was kind of fun.
- I can’t help it but like Amy. I know everyone hates her because of the Frank thing. I just hate that they stuck her in that story and then didn’t deal with it properly because I feel kind of bad liking her. But I don’t care. I like her and I like her with Matty. I loved her shoving cake in her mouth and being sad about the casserole. I really could be up for a Matty and Amy romance if they wanted to go there. They could be cute together. Anyway...I’ll just be over here in the Amy fan club of one.  It’s fine.
- I did hate the idea that the farm is suddenly doing better because I still just really want Moira to lose that damn farm. So badly.

New Reputation: Taylor Swift shares intel on TS7, fan theories, and her next era
By: Alex Suskind for Entertainment Weekly Date: May 9th 2019
Snakes begone. The 29-year-old superstar is back with a new album and a new outlook on life. We go inside the pop monarch's latest chapter.
THE PALM TREES ARRIVED IN FEBRUARY, seven in all, set against a pastel blue backdrop with superimposed stars. It appeared that a new Taylor Swift era was upon us — that the old happy-go-lucky Taylor was not, in fact, dead. Or did it? It was only an Instagram photo, just one more picture in an infinite content scroll.
Learning in public is so humiliating sometimes… Do I feel more balanced in my life than I ever have before? Um, probably yeah. But is that permanent? No. And I think being okay with that has put me in a bit of a better position.” Strong words to live by, to quote, to re-share, to tweet back to her, and see if she’ll respond.
