What societal role does advertisement fill?
What would the world look like without adverts everywhere?

Ads are starting to figure out that your phone is muted and lock you out unless you unmute, that is SO FUCKING DISGUSTING. Heaven forbid we ever have room to fucking think I guess

If y’all like tv that goes after big corporations, you should check out Gruen (formerly The Gruen Transfer). It’s an Australian comedy show about advertising, hosted by former Greens member Wil Anderson.
And it’s on the Australian national broadcaster!
Each episode can be watched in isolation, but each season has a running joke or two (like the latest Costa Living Crisis, and a previous season Primo Scrambles).
I’m honestly surprised the show is allowed to air

No, HBOMax.
I will NOT watch your new animated shows after you got rid of all the others and cancelled Infinity Train (and also removed it too!).
So kindly fuck off and stop advertising them to me.
It’s like I’m being taunted!
Fucking hell.
Okay I know it’s not personal but still.
The same goes for Netflix. Cancelling shows like Inside Job and Dead End just as they’re getting started!
Despicable shit!
But this applies especially to HBOMax.

Honestly nothing pisses me off more about the tiktok-fication of social media than the way companies have started to make their ads look like personal videos. Especially with the tiktok ai voice. Dont buy this product!! It is too good and you will never want to get anything else!!! Don’t tell anyone i told you this, but we’re having a huge sale right now! 12 of my favourite must-haves from this brand to better conform to western beauty standarts!! How about kill yourself i hate capitalism so much

Ok I'm curious
Reblog for sample size and whatnot
If I'm ever not using an adblocker I will do the second thing and honestly just need to know if I'm weird
Edit: I should clarify that this isn't taking into account skippable ads. So this is more applied to unskippable ads / assumes people just skip the ones that can be skipped

online capitalism and consumerism drives me fucking crazy. opening pinterest for less than 5 seconds already had me thinking "since when did my pinterest home page become 80% ads/promoted content (that usually arent even targeted to me which i cant decide if is more or less upsetting?????)" but then i thought. what actually IS the percentage bc this is an insane ratio of normal pins to advertisements.
so obviously i decided to check. scrolled a couple times and marked down every single "pin" i passed. i viewed 35 total. 14 were promoted ads, 10 were "real" pins that link directly to a product being sold, 11 were real pins posted by a user or shared from an external website but not as a part of the pinterest shop/merchant/whatever feature.
in other words, 40% of the content i saw was a full on outright advertisement and nothing more, and of the 60% that were actual pins, half of them were selling something. worth noting that this is from the user experience of someone who actively avoids pinning those shop things. i wish i could feel normal about this

one small ad screen consumes more energy than 3 average british homes annualy, (and there are rougly 30.000 in Britain alone) and online advertising uses up to 50x more of the CPU power than an actual website. also for an ad campaign to get just one purchase it has to show the ad 1 MILLION times. just imagine how much energy is needed for a company to get normal amounts of sales..
DESTROY. ADS. (before they destroy us)
they use soo much energy, like uncomprehensible amounts of energy, yet the amount of ads continually rises, and soon we need more energy to power vehicles and shit? ADS ARE UNSUSTAINABLE. fuck ads.

What stage of capitalism are you in when you get stuck with 5 unskipable ads on a 23 minute YouTube video and then get the annoying ass “rate out app” popup that only goes away by closing the app?
Because holy shit I’ve had enough… No I don’t want to update to YouTube premium to remove the ads.. I want less ads on YouTube regardless of subscriptions…
YouTube used to be be the number one video app and now it’s becoming usable (in my opinion)
I don’t watch stuff on there as much anymore bc it’s more ads than videos..
