Horrortober Day 19- Curiosity(Yandere Rise Mikey x Reader)

A/N, not important: You know, if life screws me over today and I can't finish tomorrows, I think I'm okay with 19 consecutive posts. I'm not happy, but I don't think I'd do anything drastic over this one. Any criticism is welcome, constructive or not. This is supposed to be a gender neutral reader, so if I screwed up somewhere, please tell me.

Summary: You finally get access to Mikey’s locked notebook and aren't sure the bubbly turtle is as innocent as he seems anymore.

The concrete floor of the lair’s living room was cold, the freezing stone seeping into your shirt and numbing your stomach. You shiver at the feeling, unsure how pleasant you truly thought it felt. Despite insisting for the past thirty minutes it was fine, you were starting to regret your call as the cold latched onto your limbs and was starting to take your arms down too. You never realized how difficult it was to draw with numb fingers. You take a small breath, grumbling quietly as you shift on the floor in an attempt to get warm.

“Hey Mikey?” You catch his attention, frowning slightly because you knew you were giving in to winter's touch. You didn’t think you’d bail so soon. Mikey looks at you, his warm eyes also seeming to know exactly what you wanted, as if he was more surprised you lasted this long.

“I have a big blanket in my bed.” He says simply, turning back to his work. You nod gratefully, pushing your palms against the floor to pick yourself up. You shiver as you walk towards the orange turtles room, your teeth chattering from the brisk air. You didn’t understand why Donnie was so insistent on waiting until one of his projects was complete before cranking up the heat since his lab had its own separate thermal system, but no one dared to complain. Donnie wasn’t against ‘accidentally’ shutting off the system entirely while his room is unaffected. You were all certain it was just to keep Leo away from Donnie’s inventions anyway.

Pushing the door aside, you walk into Mikey’s room. It was the same temperature as the hallway, but the more colorful walls made it feel warmer. If you tried hard enough, you were fairly certain you could have a conversation with the paintings on the walls.

You spend little time admiring the graffiti Mikey covered everything in. You had been here millions of times before, and it had been a few weeks since Mikey added another masterpiece to his room. You drift over to the hammock and shuffle the pillows and blankets around to find your favorite, the large fluffy one Mikey always lets you use. You wrap the plush blanket around yourself, convinced you had just stolen a piece of heaven to sink into. The little warmth your body was generating is trapped within the blanket's fabric, quickly returning the color to your face.

Your eyes drift around the room one last time as you walk to the exit, merely scanning for oddities than truly taking in the details. Your eyes land on a bright red sketchbook sitting inconspicuously on Mikey’s desk, the usual diary lock that kept it closed sitting open and to the side. The sketchbook was open, showing off a drawing of someone familiar. You move closer, ignoring the nagging voice that was scolding you for snooping.

The drawing was of you, sitting next to Mikey on the couch. You were both leaning on each other, hands and legs entangled in the silly pose. Your face was happy, the graphite drawing somehow capturing the light and care in your eyes. You smile softly, kneeling down to take the sketchbook in your hand and admire the drawing more. It was a surprise to see, but a very welcome one.

You thumb the pages over to the beginning, looking through the drawings more. You seemed to be the main focus of most of the drawings, which helped you feel justified in looking through the sketchbook. There were so many sketches of you, the first couple innocent and sweet like the one you first saw. You frown as you glance over the fourth and fifth pages, the detailed drawing of you chained and gagged making you feel uneasy.

The next few pages were similar, all depicting you in ways that made you uncomfortable or sick. You stop looking through at the eleventh drawing, the dead bodies being too similar in looks to your friends and families. You shakily set the book down, unsure how to feel about what you just saw. On one hand, they could very well just be practice, and he found you easy to draw. On the other…

You shudder, not wanting to dwell on the implications of that. You quickly thumb through the drawings, trying to not look at them as you try to return to the original page that was open when you came in. You’re so engrossed in your mission, you don’t even notice Mikey entering the room and shutting the train car's door behind him. He walks forward, startling you as he grabs the notebook from your hand and carefully closes it, making sure to not bed any of the pages.

You gape at him, eyes wide and barely breathing. You struggle to speak while he locks the notebook, his face blank except for the smile on his lips. It was like he was glad you saw his drawings.

“I-I’m so sorry Mikey, I saw it open and then when I went to grab it, I dropped it and I was trying to fix it, but I couldn’t find the page and-” Mikey kneels in front of you and covers your mouth with his hand, stopping your desperate lies from falling. His eyes were still the same, warm and kind and oh so innocent, something you were starting to not believe. He looks down at the sketchbook in his hand, then sets it back down on the desk.

“It’s fine,” He lies, the words coming easy. He keeps his hand firmly over your mouth, not trusting you to not interrupt. “I was going to give it to you anyways! I’m just a little disappointed you peaked so early. It kind of ruins the gift.”

He pouts at you, his hand finally dropping from your mouth. Before you can speak, his arms wrap around your lower back and pull you forward, sending you crashing into his chest. You grunt in discomfort, your head knocking comfortably against the dull points of his plastron and the blanket being the only thing that kept you from the rough texture.

“So, how much did you see?”

His soft voice sends chills down your spine. You weren’t used to so much forced happiness in his voice, and no longer being able to see his face from your position made it so much worse. You gently try to push him back, your heart thudding against your ribcage. Your fists slowly close, his arms holding you tight against him so you have no chance of moving. You try to swallow the lump in your throat, desperately chasing down the fear that was starting to consume you. You try to think of what to say, unsure of how to step to calm down the young mutant.

“Not much,” Your throat is dry when you speak, causing your words to be quieter and harder than you wanted. Mikey shifts you closer to him, his face pressed into your hair. You don’t try to struggle in his arms, wanting nothing more than for him to calm down and let you go. “I just saw the first couple pages.”

Mikey hums in acknowledgement, his chest lifting higher as he breathes deeply for a moment. His voice is tight, almost nervous. You weren’t sure how to take it. “What did you think?”

“They were… Nice.” You say, your stomach churning once more as you remember the drawings and what they contained. The blood and gore of your family members from the final page would haunt you for years to come. Mikey nods despite your unease, seeming to brighten at the answer.

“Good. I’m glad you like them. I really really like you, you know. I wanted to give that to you before I asked you out but…” Mikey takes a deep breath, his voice darkening and his arms growing tighter around you. “Well, you ruined it. You ruined the surprise, and I’m really mad at you right now.”

Your blood runs cold at his words, unease biting at your heart and soaking into your veins. Mikey doesn’t speak for a moment, his body tense. You weren’t sure what he was thinking, but you got the feeling you had to leave. Now.

“Hey Mikey?” You mumble, trying to tread lightly. You didn't want to make him more upset. He squeezes you, letting you know he was listening without making a sound. “I’m sorry, I really am, but I need to go home. I- I have homework, remember?”

Mikey doesn’t answer, his grip tightening more and you were sure you could feel your bones stress under the pressure. You open your mouth to continue, but he cuts you off, the usually bubbly turtle's words turning cold.

“You’re not leaving.” He says shortly, an almost whine in his voice despite the cold words. You tense, unsure how to respond. The growing fear in your heart wasn’t helping you think clearly, and you couldn’t see a good way to get out of this.

Mikey breathes through his nose, trying to calm himself so he doesn’t do anything brash. You both sit there for a few moments, your face forcefully pressed up against Mikey’s plastron. Your breathing is starting to get more laborious as panic continues to set in, Mikey’s compressive hold not helping in the slightest. The turtle himself also seemed unsure what to do next, his arms shaking as he held you. Neither of you move nor speak, not wanting to break the heavy silence that fell upon the room.

“I’m sorry,” MIkey says suddenly, his voice making you both jump. He licks his lips before continuing, your silence encouraging him to finish. “I’m sorry, but I can’t let you leave. I need you. This, this wasn’t supposed to happen like this.”

Before you can ask what he meant, Mikey stands up with you in his arms, his spots and eyes glowing as he lets his powers flow. Your panic escapes you now, screams and cries erupting from your float as chains wrap around you and lock you in place. Now fully bound, Mikey sets you down in his hammock bed, his eyes shaky while he backs away. He looks over you, seemingly looking for injuries while you continue to scream and curse his name. Mikey seems upset at the outburst, quickly walking out of sight before reappearing with a small cloth he shoves into your mouth. The dusty rag burns on your tongue, making you choke and cough.

“I’ll be back.” Mikey mumbles, his eyes disappearing as he turns around and marches off, leaving you to steam alone in his cold, treacherous room.

have you been asked to review the Tapu pokemon yet?

As a whole, I really like the Tapus. It's neat to have one guardian per Alolan island, and the designs themselves are well thought out. I really like how each one has a set of white triangular markings with a darker border, which allows each one of them to be very distinctive with unique designs and palettes while also making sure all three look like they belong together in a group. This is also enhanced by them carrying tiki-inspired masks, with each one being based on a different animal that also influences the creature itself to some degree. Good stuff.

Thematically, the Tapus are also based off of the four main Hawaiian gods (Koko, Lele, Bulu, and Fini seem to be based off of Kūkaʻilimoku, Kāne, Lono, and Kanaloa respectively). I'm obviously not Hawaiian so I don't feel qualified to judge these guys on accuracy, though it seems like Tapu Koko is the most on-point with the feathered look while Tapu Fini is the least, having little to do with the deity it's based off of aside from a vague connection to the ocean.

Regardless, all of these designs are distinct and do a good job standing out from other legendaries, as well as tying back into their region. There was clearly a lot of thought that went into them in terms of both functionality and visual aesthetics.

Tapu Koko is my personal favorite of the bunch. Vaguely based off a rooster (side note: I'm amazed we don't have a rooster 'mon yet. I guess Blaziken counts but it's only a rooster in the vaguest sense of the word), it sports feathers, a beak-like structure on its face, and a mask that it forms a beak with using its pincer-like hands. Really neat! I also like the mohawk becomes the rooster's comb when the mask is closed.

The orange and yellow palette is also nice, as it's very high-contrast and pops well against the black body. My only nitpicks would be that the two pairs of chest markings feel a bit too busy, as do the lines in the yellow part of the eye (though granted, they all have those). Otherwise, this is a very neat design.

I like Tapu Lele because it looks all cute and pretty and then it turns out it's an incredibly cruel nature deity that does not care about the suffering it causes. It and Beautifly should be friends.

Anyway, Tapu Lele is meant to resemble a butterfly head, with the hair curls becoming antennae and a tentacle emerging from the bottom that resembles a proboscis, along with two wing-like structures on the back. I don't think it reads quite as clearly as some of the others, and I do wish the body took after its animal more (the creature itself having no insect-like traits, compared to the other Tapus where you can see the animal influence outside of the masks), but it's still neat.

Tapu Bulu probably resembles its animal the most in terms of body shape, having a bull's signature nose piercing and hooves, as well as horns. Most interesting is the long tail, which not only matches the hooves but becomes the bull's nose ring when the mask closes.

The colors are nice and high-contrast, but I do wish it had been green instead of red. Koko is yellow and orange, Lele is pink and red, and Fini is purple and blue. Having Bulu be red and gold feels too similar to Lele, even if it fits the angry bull idea. It also would've made sense from a typing perspective, as Tapu Bulu is the grass-type of the group (even the horns kind of look like pencils/wood).

Otherwise I don't have any real complaints, outside of the face markings feeling a bit busy, as you have the nose, ring, and three different eye markings. I feel like they could've easily dropped the white eye markings and not lost anything.

And finally, Tapu Fini is probably my least favorite of the group, though it's still a good design. I like the body shape (kind of siren-like, though I don't know if that was intentional) with fin-shaped accents in the hair, on the hands, and on the body.

When it closes its mask it resembles a swordfish of sorts, with the hair strands becoming the side fins and the hair fin slotting into the mask's purple ridge to form a dorsal fin. Something about the fish itself feels a little off though; maybe it's just that it lacks a tail fin, or maybe it just looks a bit too plain compared to the others because it's meant to be viewed more from the side. Still a pretty solid design all around though.

Anyway, overall, I think these guys are great. They're cohesive but distinct, have unique visuals and themes that set them apart from other legendaries, and designs that work from both a visual and mechanical standpoint. Good stuff.

as a kid: tee ball, soccer, and basketball. as an adult, i just do occasional contra dance, if that counts

Mineral Swag Quarterfinals: Two Bad Bitches

How lucky I am to have this match-up! These are my two favorite mineral samples of all time! Of course garnet is my favorite mineral, and I appreciate fluorite but these two specific samples of these two minerals are SO RAD! Look at those shapes! Those colors! Anyway. More under the cut because this one is LONG!

Garnet is the January birthstone and actually comes in MANY colors. It is commonly red or pink but can be green or orange as well, depending on the garnet variety you’re talking about.

Similar to how forsterite and fayalite form a solid solution series with each other and are both considered olivine, garnets are part of one of two solid solution series. A solid solution means that two elements can exist in the same crystal structure and form the same mineral. In olivine, iron and mangesium are those elements. Fayalite has all iron and forsterite has all magnesium.

For garnets, almandine, spessartine, and pyrope garnets form one series and uvarovite, grossular, and andradite garnets form another.

Some garnet examples:

Garnet naturally forms dodecahedra and is an isotropic mineral so it goes “extinct” (turns opaque) under cross polarized light. It is named after the Latin word garanatus which means "seedlike." Thanks for the inspiration to look this up last round @palaver-of-solipsists

Fluorite forms octahedra (aka little d8's) or cubes. It comes in many colors! Most prominently are purple and green. But yellow, blue, and even pinkish colors can occur.

(Pink fluorite octahedra shown above) It is also fluorescent (it glows under UV light). Fluorite gets its name from the Latin “to flow,” because it is used as a flux in iron smelting to make the slag less viscous (more runny). However, FLUORESCENCE, as in the property of materials glowing under certain wavelengths of light, gets its name from FLUORITE. How rad!

It may not be a hard mineral that necessarily lends itself to jewelry (although you definitely can still use it for jewelry—just don’t slam or drop your stuff!), but it has the RANGE. Some fluorite samples from Elmwood, Tennessee, even look like little purple Borg cubes.

RATING TR FITS PT. 2 BC AGAIN WHY NOTTT!!!

In (very dim)light of the new ep and them animating one of my fav panels of izana i am back

#7 i almost hate that im putting it this low bc he bodied this. Very keisuke esp w the crosses on it and that hes biting the bandage stop 😭😭 anyways i love the platforms sm. I do see the overall style as very bajicoded but also i feel like it should be a darker blue?? Either way he looks handsome 8.5/10 -1.5 for color scheme

#8 the crop top sent me into another dimension. No further comments(lie). Love the color scheme sm it matches his eyes perfectly. Such a cutie and the DOLPHINS AHHH. I love his hair like this. I also noticed the gears which was also on shinichiros fit which PLOT AF love to see it. Simple yet elegant, effective. I would maybe say 8/10 bc it is a little basic but it works very well for captain outlaw and his overall style

#9 I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THE TW SNOWFLAKES UGH. im sick. Color scheme is so good and the sandals are cute. HOWEVER. i cant w the pose. Whenever wakui does this in his arts it throws me off sm it just looks so dumb IM SORRY!!! Gives me pants down over buttcheeks walking at a 90° angle vibes and it looks ridiculous. I love chifuyu but 7.5/10 -2.5 for pose

#10 okay, do not get me wrong i like it but i think that there are many better oa’s of mikey. Im not a huge fan of the outer coat but i do love the inner part of the coat and how they contrast each other. This one is just not my favorite. I would say probably 6/10 for blandness

Now unfortunately we move to last place and do not maim me but

#11 im sorry but there is rly nothing abt this that i like. I think the shoes would be cool on their own but they dont match w the rest of the outfit. I dont think the colors match well w draken either, i see him as more like yellow/orange/red i guess?? I would argue again that there are much better oa’s of him and im just not a fan!! Also the pose and bandage placements. I WILL give bonus points bc i do like the dragons. I feel like its at least a little more creative than mikeys. Probably 5.5-6/10 bc i dont think this looks like draken’s style at all besides the dragons on it.

I really really wish they wouldve done one for kazutora he wouldve been so good for this. ANYWAYSSS thank u all for the support!! Ive never had an acct for smth like this but ive been a fan of the series for years now and have to get my thoughts out to someone. :))

you wanted me to talk about ooparts from twewy. ok. this song is an absolute hot mess and it’s one of my absolute FAVORITES. but specifically only the version that plays when you fight konishi in final remix (‘ooparts -give me a chance’) the original is. eh. but the difference between them is not the thing that matters to me anyway so i guess i like the original too

first and foremost. i have gone through the process of color-highlighting the lyrics (screenshotted from the wiki) to point out which song each line comes from to visually represent just how much this massive word mashup borrows stuff. i also just straight up put the names of the songs next to some of them but i couldn’t fit them all or else this would be a mess lol. please enjoy

•there is a bit of a liberty taken with ‘you’re getting out of control’ bc the line in game over is just ‘you’re out of control’ but i still think it counts as a connection

so basically i think this song is really cool and amazing not just bc the music goes really hard at about one minute in (but only specifically in the one where you fight konishi, at least in final remix) but mostly because it represents a few of my favorite things about twewy. the whole ‘melody/vibe over lyrics’ thing twewy has going on where it says hey who cares if these lyrics are in any way comprehensible; what matters is that it’s a lot of fun to sing

but beyond that? ooparts also does the thing that twister is known for but even better. aka word salad lyrics that may not have any innate meaning in the words themselves, but they matter BECAUSE they’re word salad. apparently the intention behind twister’s nonsense lyrics is to represent all the different clashing ideas in shibuya. it’s diverse and noisy and weird and it all comes together into something fun. ooparts does the same except its lyrics aren’t even random words; they’re from other songs in this game. including twister itself!

to me it really feels like a turning point in the game when you fight konishi, the final week’s game master, the last actual valid legal boss within the framework of the game, and you have this crazy wild song playing that, through its lyrics, serves to remind you of everything else you’ve encountered in your insane journey. it’s a culmination of all your struggles and you’re here to see it all through

and the call-and-response lyrics back and forth between the two vocalists are soooo fun! it feels like teamwork: the song. like truly this is the moment of revenge and triumph for neku and beat. they’ve made it this far and nothing can stop them now. they’re not afraid of konishi they’re hyped up to defeat her. and konishi is such a great villain with a really tricky and unique boss fight so it feels super satisfying to finally get the better of her! it’s not about fear it’s about fun! and when the beat switches on the chorus to something so much brighter and smoother… feels like that moment in the battle where you break through one of her gimmicks and you can see clearly now

in conclusion: i love the weird telephone beep song with the strangest lyrics known to man

I finished reading stars for the first time like yesterday and finished it in like 4-5 days— it’s so good o(-( 💖 My brain is already wanting to do a pmv for it— it may or may not have become a favorite of mine

I wanted to ask though, do you have any descriptions of what the planets roughly look like from afar?

anyway! description time!

Eldingvegr - the planet is tidally-locked, meaning it doesn't spin. one side is always facing its sun, while the other side is always cast in darkness. the sun facing side, Sólsid, is a vast desert so the planet looks mostly brown and yellow on that side. the dark facing side, Nóttsid, is permanently shrouded in darkness, but if someone were to point a giant flashlight at it it would mostly be white and grey because it's largely made up of stone and ice with a few small settlements here and there. most of the planets population lives in the Røkkrring, which is the middle band of the planet where the day and night sides meet. I actually did find a reference picture of what a sunset looks like from space so

in my mind the Røkkrring looks like this from space—a band of varying shades of soft pinks. I know that's a lot going on with one planet lol sorry about that

Zephys IV - this planet is extremely cold, with the entire population living underground because the surface is essentially just ice and a few extremely hardy tundra plants. from afar the planet essentially looks like a ball of white and blue ice.

Kinoko - as a planet Kinoko is heavily forested with a huge variety of mushrooms and trees found on the surface. from afar it looks relatively similar to earth, except it's more land than water and the land is extremely green

Mantle - schlatt's planet is a moon that orbits a gas giant (like Jupiter in our own solar system). the gas giant Mantle orbits is a light orangish color, while Mantle itself looks kind of like Saturn's moon Titan with it's kind of hazy green/blue/orange glow

And then we have the Badlands, which are a trio of planets that all orbit another gas giant that govern together. Of the Badlands we have:

Nona - this one is like Kinoko in that it's a heavily forested planet with lots of green. whereas Kinoko though looks roughly to have 55% land and 45% water, Nona has 70% land and 30% water. It's mostly just masses of extremely green continents with a few splashes of blue lakes here and there.

Decima - in my mind Decima has the same haziness you always see with Saturn's moon Titan, but the color scheme for Decima is entirely yellows. the surface of Decima is uninhabitable due to high temperatures and toxic gas, so all populations live in floating cities in the upper atmosphere

Morta - Morta is a bit of a hell planet that only gem hybrids like Skeppy and demons like Bad can survive on. the planet itself is dark grey and red with no visible water anywhere from afar. there technically is water on the planet, but it's very far below ground in the extensive cave system that runs through the entire thing.

And then the gas giant these three planets orbit is kind of a hazy dark orange/reddish color in my mind but I'm not super picky about it

there are a lot of things i love about lockwood and co, but i think one of my favorite things is the attention to detail — especially the attention to color.

in the beginning, when lucy is at jacobs, she is constantly in the yellow uniform, its an integral part of her character at the beginning. and then, after norrie dies and lucy runs away, lucy completely abandons yellow. in fact, the most prominent color in her wardrobe from that moment on is blue, she is CONSTANTLY wearing blue, which is on the exact opposite side of the color spectrum as yellow. and then towards the end, after lucy admits to the tape (and norrie) that she is healing, her blue sweater has a stripe of yellow in it.

also, i love how the trio are color coded, lucy is blue (obviously), george is orange (because his wardrobe is very heavily oranges and reds), and then lockwood is clearly black (because all he ever wears is the suit ensamble).

anyways yeah i love over analyzing things, no im not hyperfixating, i am completely normal about this piece of media. YOURE hyperfixating.

My favorite poem is Antigonish by Hughes Mearns! It’s featured in the Magnus Archives and it is lodged in my brain forever. I’ll probably make it its own dedicated post but it talks about a man who isn’t there, with the writer wishing that the man who isn’t there would go away. It’s a lovely little poem and especially as someone whose psychosis manifests primarily as delusions, I simply Vibe with a poem about something you know isn’t there but terrorizes you anyways.

And yeah! I have taste -> color synesthesia!! For the first 10 or so years of my life I thought you could teach colors to (color)blind people using foods. It’s kind of a weird thing to try and talk about because really the main way I know that my experience of the world is different from most people’s is that language just not built for the way I experience taste. I’ve thought of trying to do some sort of art based on my synesthesia but ive never been able to figure out exactly how since it’s really difficult for me to separate taste and the colors. I also experience ‘shrimp colors’ that don’t exist in a way humans can visually experience. Like orange and green at the same time, but not grey or speckled; the color simply does not exist.

There’s also almost no correlation between visualcolors and tastecolors. Por ejemplo, carrots (orange food) taste like a desaturated forest green. The only real trends are that the more artificial a food is, the more likely it is to match color wise; and that water will lighten and desaturate things.

Also it’s difficult for me to sort of quantify since I have no other frame of reference, but it does have a lot of effects on my life. Since color tends to overwhelm any ‘normal taste’, that’s what most of my favorite (and least favorite) foods are based on. I dislike carrots because it’s unpredictable whether they’re green or brown and I don’t like that neither of those are orange. My two favorite foods are grape koolaid (it’s so purple and I like purple; I also never water it down because then it’s Purple and I can also taste sour) and salt & vinegar chips (the vinegar covers any colors).

Water is always white or a very very light grey. This does affect what water I will drink because I avoid drinking water that’s sort of tinted warm colors. Doesn’t vibe right.

And the way I describe foods is almost always color based, since that’s the main way I experience it. This has deeply confused and mildly frustrated anyone trying to learn anything applicable to their own experience of food. I have no idea what other people taste, especially since colors tend to overshadow anything else. I’m pretty sure I experience spiciness and saltiness normally though.

And as mentioned earlier, it seriously impacts my sensory issues. Tastes are doubled (I guess?) and any after taste lingers for ages. If the water im drinking is significantly tinted it builds up in my mouth and is Bad (I had to pause writing this to refill my water bottle with my house filtered water instead of the water fountain from my school since that water is reddish and my water is only very faintly teal). Also since all taste is doubled-ish I am basically always aware of the fact that my mouth has a taste and a color. Which kinda sucks.

Also I think this is an adhd thing but I have a hard time describing colors unless I’m actively tasting something because I have a word based brain and the colors are something that completely upends the English language’s way of describing the senses. That’s sort of why I always describe it as being a one way link and say “taste to color synesthesia” rather than “taste color synesthesia”, because I don’t taste anything when I see colors, I just experience colors when I taste something. I think if it went both ways I would be a very different person and would likely have meltdowns much more often but that’s pure speculation.

I thiiiink that’s everything I can think of right now, but yeah! Synesthesia! I think I heard the word about four-ish years ago now and literally nothing has clicked for me faster than that did. It took me less time to start identifying with synesthesia than it did for me to identify with any lgbtq+ label. Every time I think about the fact that ‘tasting colors’ is something that people say to mean they’re loopy or high or something and not that they can literally taste colors I have to do a double take. It’s such a seemingly tiny little thing but it’s so fundamental to my experience of the world that I cannot even imagine anything different. What does koolaid taste like if not Color? I don’t know, because all I can taste is Color.

(PRIDE)

This month I've decorated our calendar in Pride colors.

To explain: my office has a dry erase calendar. The ungodly maniac who created it decided it should be Monday-Sunday. I mention this not because it's at all important, but because I need to vent about how much I hate it at every given opportunity. Anyway, back to the point: dry erase calendar. Each month I fill in the calendar with the month, year, and all of its days. Each month I give 2 colors: 1 color for normal days and 1 color for "special days" (holidays and coworker birthdays.) The 2 colors change per month. Red and blue for July. Red and green for December. Orange and black for October. Last month, May, I chose pink and green because it was my birth month and I chose some of my favorite colors.

This month, every Monday is red. Every Tuesday is orange. Every Wednesday is lime green (there is no yellow!) Thursdays are dark green. Fridays are blue. Saturdays and Sundays are the closest colors I could get to "indigo" and "violet." This means instead of swapping between 2 markers, I have to keep all 7 at the calendar, and dig out which one I need to mark off any given day. It's a bit of a hassle but I like the extra color and I really like the nod to Pride.

Why this matters is I half expected to get in trouble. You see, I live in the Bible belt of the U.S. I live in a very rural city. Technically it's called a city, but it's a laughable excuse for one, and yeah quite rural. Quite conservative. Quite Christian. The sort of place where no one is racist or homophobic "buuuut...."

No one said anything at first, but on Friday one of our workers said "I like the calendar!" which I proudly zoomed out of my office to take ownership of. "That was me!" Said worker was very enthusiastic about it, and appreciated it as "it's the details!" She's only one person, but her support made me feel better about my decision. My Boss was sitting there when she said this, and his lack of commentary further relieved me. Clearly he was aware of it and had no problem with it. Phew!

Later that afternoon, a handful of us gathered around another coworker as she lamented how her daughter has been distant from her. She never outright said it, but strongly hinted that her daughter recently came out as a lesbian and she may or may not have a girlfriend. This coworker is very "love the sinner hate the sin." She never outright says anything. But if you listen long enough, you get the picture.

The trouble is, I otherwise really like this coworker. She's funny, vivacious, generous, kind. She just is also very Christian and very married to her beliefs. She doesn't hate anyone, you see. She just can't "support" everyone and everything.

To hear her tell it, her relationship with her daughter was fine after all of this. She wouldn't really hear a word about it. But me...I don't know. Maybe the daughter was relieved at first that her mother didn't hate her, but over time it grated at her. Maybe it was fine before she had a girlfriend, but now that she has an actual partner, her parents' position on the matter is more of a problem. My coworker thinks the girlfriend is a "bad influence" but as for me...I don't know.

In fairness, I don't know the daughter or the girlfriend. Maybe my coworker is right. Maybe the daughter doesn't care that her parents love her, but hate her "sin." Maybe her girlfriend really is a bad influence. But I can't help but really doubt it.

I like this coworker. It makes me sad that she's so hurt. I don't like anyone to hurt. But also....I can't help but hope her daughter keeps her distance. Her daughter is young and, while an adult and living on her own, still relies on her parents for so much. I really hope that she can break away from needing them. That she can take care of herself and not need to keep people in her life who don't really accept her. I've never met this woman in my life, but I ache for her.

What my very Christian coworkers don't know is that I'm agnostic. Also: asexual. That last one might not mean much to them. It's not anything people take very seriously. At best they sort of shrug it off. At worst people are confused or think I'm confused. Even people in the LGBT+ community don't think we belong with them.

It's easy in some ways. I'm a cis woman and my partner is a cis man and no one looks at us twice. No one's really going to be on my case unless I make a big deal out of my identity.

The problem is, it's a big deal to me. I spent years and years feeling broken and confused. I had no comprehension of what asexuality really was until my early to mid twenties. Once it was on my radar, it still took me years to sort it all out. I was 26 before I really found a way to explain who I am and what I experience: sex-favorable asexual! Even now it feels like such an important thing because even if not everyone will understand, I at least understand it myself, and have some tools to try to help people understand. The words make me feel comfortable, and valid, and whole. And not crazy. Not broken. It feels nice to know I'm not alone. That there are people out there who feel the way I do, and experience what I do.

Since the start of the month I've seen friends make their own pride posts, and I've wanted to make posts of my own, but it always felt icky. Wrong. Am I overstepping if I talk about it? Not everyone thinks we belong, after all. We don't really "count" as queer to everyone.

So maybe it's easier in some ways. In other ways, though....it can feel like such a small and lonely place to be.

My world is bigger than the small-minded small-town I'm physically in. I have friends all over the world. Friends from different places, with different faiths, and different orientations. Most of my friends are queer and neurotypical and just as "weird" as me. I have a place I belong and people I belong with, even if they're not a walk down the street, or even a car drive to the next town over. I'm lucky in some ways.

And foolish in others.

I forget sometimes just how small people can be. Many of those around me scoff at Pride. Who needs Pride anyway? There are rainbows all over! Rainbows belong to GOD and the GAYS STOLE IT. What about straight pride? The world isn't really homophobic anymore. They're not homophobic, really, but...

Since Friday I've not been so proud of my pride calendar. It's such a small and silly thing. This office is so gray. Gray floors and gray walls. The sky outside is gray. My little rainbow calendar looks so sad. It's not really do anything.

Except, it meant something to someone. One person's day was brightened to see it. And maybe that's all that will happen. But maybe someone will come into our office...someone like my coworker's daughter...and maybe they'll see it and feel less alone. Even if they don't know who, even with nothing else, maybe just knowing that someone here supports them...maybe it can mean something to someone. I know how important it's been for me to feel less alone.

And even though it feels so small, every day I rummage for the corresponding color and mark off another brightly colored day.

Do you think you could review jubjubs?

JubJubs are one of those Neopets that are just certified Creatures(TM). These guys have a very specific aesthetic to them which I can best describe as an 80s retro toy look ala a Troll doll or Furby. However, they're much cuter than most 80s toys, sporting big eyes and soft fur. I've never been super into them myself, but I appreciate how unique they are compared to the rest of the Neopet species out there.

What's also interesting about JubJubs is that they're the only Neopet species without any upper limbs, which means that they use their prehensile feet kind of like hands. (This also causes them to not be super popular on the NPC front, as it's hard to anthropomorphize something that's literally just fur and feet. Which is a shame—I'd love to see more JubJub characters out there.)

I will say that my one basic grievance with them is that I never liked how they always have orange feet and eyebrows by default regardless of color. Feels like they should've just been a darker/lighter shade of the base, or a more neutral tone. Of course, plenty of PB colours fix this anyway.

Strictly speaking the JubJub's post-customization design is fine, but there's something just slightly off about it compared to the old art that I can't put my finger on. The foot always being up in the air is part of it, but part of it is also the eyes just being a smidge further apart and the fur being a more even shape. Still, for the most part they haven't changed drastically.

Favorite Colours:

Coconut: While not technically a species-specific color as Chias also come in it, coconut JubJubs are pretty iconic in their own right, appearing on Mystery Island frequently. Any JubJub color that plays around with their inherent roundness is fun, and I like the little tassels under the body that connect the feet to the rest of it. The orange feet also work better here, being a complimentary color to the brown.

(There's also an unconverted version, which sports crescent markings, different eyes, and a round mouth. It's not bad, but honestly it always felt really uncanny to me.)

Maraquan: What a nice color this is! Not only is coral a great fit, sort of playing around with the shape of their fur, but the colors are also beautiful—an orange-ish middle that becomes blue at most of the outcrops, with a complimentary magenta for the feet. Something about the mouth and nose here looks especially cute as well.

Halloween: Come on, it's a pumpkin! You can't not like it. While it lost its glowing eyes in the conversion, this design still looks great, sporting carved jack-o-lanturn facial features and a distinct pumpkin shape. The orange feet also now compliment the orange body, while the stem provides a nice pop of color. Great stuff.

(Side note: some of the unconverted art shows the pumpkin as more of a costume with a regular red JubJub inside. The converted version doesn't have pb clothing, and frankly I'm glad. It's much more fun to just think that it's literally a pumpkin than a JubJub that just happens to be in a pumpkin.)

I finally watched Swedish Christ Superstar

Remember how I did a whole deep dive into the 2018 one? Yeah well, I was gonna try to do that with this version, but it is so unbelievably, completely, utterly, insanely unhinged that I just had to have my post about it match the energy. So without further ado, here are my literal first reaction notes to Jesus Christ Superstar (2014 Swedish Arena Tour).

Overture-

• Ooh the stuttering guitar is so metal

• Love the outfits, give me more apocalyptic leather headbanging nonsense

• Love how the choreo goes with the music rather than pure immediate chaos

• Admittedly the orchestra could be a bit better, but not terrible

• The shopping cart is my favorite character

• This feels almost interpretive

• Ok. Jesus is hot

• Draculacore

• Is he orgasming?

• I will say, I like productions with more color, but I see the style they're going for and I don't dislike it

ok fuck it. ranking covers of a home at the end of the world by michael cunningham because guys some of these covers slap and some of them are the ugliest shit i've ever seen. this is the kind of post i would have used to make back in my tiktok days but there's no way im opening that app by my own will again. so mutuals read this post.

last place/ugliest cover first.

the stock photo. literally what is going on here. the font is practically unreadable and makes no sense. the image itself looks like someone pulled it right off shutterstock. its giving my middle school vsco account. why are there three women on the front? the story is primarily about two guys and one girl. i mean there is a second female pov but she's not part of the polycule. font is clean but ugly. bye.

the movie poster one. i have so much beef with this cover, even as a movie poster. they literally took three screenshots of the movie and overlayed them into a weird collage type thingy. why is colin farrell standing like that?? why is the character jonathan in the back?? it's giving disney channel. it's giving early 00s--in a bad way. no rights at all. 🍅🍅🍅

the perks of being a wallflower one. i guess there was a craze for late 90s books to have typewriter font in the middle of a minimalistic cover?? i hate minimalistic, abstract covers. you could choose to tell us something about the book but no. here is an orange circle and a black circle. okay.

the modern cover (i assume). i like the watercolor and how it's not too busy but there's still a discernable image (unlike a CERTAIN cover i just discussed...🙄). the font kind of fucks up the whole thing though. it doesn't match the vibes of the book at all. it's very new-adult-romance and just feels off. because yeah technically the book is about new adults and their relationship drama but it's not this...cute.

the uk cover (?). the quality of this image sucks but i literally could only find it on abebooks.co.uk so. it's not bad, just really busy. the font has a shadow so it can be readable but that makes it feel even more cluttered. i like how the angel statue makes an appearance, but all the colors and how bright it is just makes it feel like a little too much.

the color burned one. honestly while i like the vibes i'm not quite sure who this lady is supposed to be. that looks like a wing so she's probably the white angel statue, but she looks too human. and angels aren't different colors like that. i like how this is simple and black, very classy. but ultimately it doesn't really make a lot of sense.

the grey one. this is simple, but nice. it's dark but with light shining behind the house--a nice balance of hardships but also hope, which fits the story. there's a swingset, which makes sense given the story is about growing up, in a sense. and there might have been a swingset at the actual house in the book. can't remember. the font is clean. a little sci-fi/futuristic for my taste but that's alright i guess. this is the cover i have. i guess i should be lucky it's not one of the previous ones but i really wish i had the next one...

the first edition. look it's classy. it's gothic. the angel is there. the sky looks like it could be ohio or nyc. there's powerlines. the font is stylish but not over the top. it's not too bright. it's slaying. one of my favorite things about this cover is how it emphasizes the angel, because the book itself was written around michael cunningham's seminal short story "white angel" which i have talked about a lot on this blog. it also is in a similar pose to the actual angel statue it was based on, the black angel of iowa city (shown below). i'm a fan. i wish i had this cover soooo bad<333

overall thoughts: most of these covers are kind of shitty lol. this book deserves better</3 if one of y'all live in the US, dont care much about covers, and want a free copy of this book i'll send my copy (the grey cover) to you for free just so i can buy the top ranked one on ebay lol. anyways if u got to the end and found this at all entertaining, tell me so. this was fun to do except when tumblr deleted the whole thing and i had to remake the entire post!!! lol!!!! and y'all should read this book because it's very good and very messy queer and i adore it deeply. <3

here's my orange blood review that absolutely nobody asked for:

sweet venom: i liked the mannequin challenge lowkey LOL it was rlly cool but what i didn't like was how only one set was used and the SAME mannequin sequence was reused, just replacing members. it seems that belift rushed this filming bc it isn't nowhere near the effort they've put into their other mvs. also, HYBE WHY ARE U ALLERGIC TO BRIDGES??? WHY IS SWEET VENOM LESS THAN 2 AND A HALF MINUTES?? like just imagine a bridge where it slows down a little and picks back up with a lil dance break... (i should be a producer me thinks) moving on to the positives, their vocals sound so good!! jay opening the song did it for me and tbh i rlly do like it. it contrasts bite me which was their goal and the "sweet hee hee" is going to catch on fast. plus, i'm one for upbeat, fun songs and im really happy that jay got to contribute to the writing!! i just wish it was longer /: plus u can see the michael jackson influence in this cb which i can appreciate

mortal: i love her so much. there's like A LOT of monolouging but the melody is really pretty and their vocals sound amazing. it makes me feel like im frolicking in a field fr. i love jake's closing lines bc it rlly sets up the storyline of the album.

still monster: don't come for me i know she's already a fan favorite but i'll have to listen to it a few more times. ITS GOOD THOUGH. jungwon's voice in the pre-chorus LIKE CMON. i think it matches the vibe of sweet venom, just a slower ver of it if ykwim. i think the performance will solidify everything for me and reporters said the choreo was rlly good.

blind: ONE OF MY FAVS. jay's vocals omg he is really showing off his singing this comeback. i cant explain why i love it so much BUT JUST KNOW SHE IS IT!! FOR ME. ((the "wait a minute" part HITS)) ((so does the bridge))

orange flower (you complete me): ive already said this before BUT I JUST KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE MY FAV. (it has the same writer from bills, one of my fav enha songs) they really tricked us playing the slower version for the trailer TT (hybe pls release that ver as well i NEED her) the song makes me feel really happy and the lyrics are so<33 this is definitely a song for the fans with lyrics like "color my world... you complete me" again gotta highlight jay's vocals bc i love vocalist jay!!

sweet venom (eng ver.): same notes as written before but it sounds good in english!! not awkward at all and i can see myself listening to both versions.

overall, the members emphasized the storyline they were trying to create and that it was a continuation from bite me. i think with watching the trailers and knowing both storylines it makes you appreciate the message they were trying to send. the songs fit well together as a mini album and i can see why the members love this comeback so much. i just wish belift/hybe took a little more time crafting the title track and put more effort into the mv but what can we expect from that company... im extremely proud of the boys bc theyve been working nonstop for so long and it makes me happy that they also love the songs bc i want them to release music theyre proud of.

tada! i bring you MORE ART

An alien species I am tentatively naming the Kudori, at least for now each kudori individual is a small hivemind of a usual minimum of 4 up to several dozen bodies controlled by a single mind (the "chorus") simultaneously; "branch" was a placeholder name for their individual bodies, but it grew on me so i'm keeping it despite the name "chorus", none of the individual branches have any individual mind or personality, and the neurotypical chorus has only one personality; that said, the chorus's long term memories are stored in the branches' brains, so the kudori really doesn't want to lose its branches each of a kudori's branches look more similar to each other than most of these examples do, since each kudori's branches are either littermates or asexually cloned from one of the original littermates; my favorite design of these examples is yellow-eyes up by the handpaw drawing, which i'm probably going to develop into a proper character for… Something, anyway
