Roll for Perception - E.M.
Tumblr media
a/n: I have not dived into this in a while, but I hope I do well enough for you guys to enjoy. If you guys like it enough, I'll make it a series.
pairing: Eddie Munson x Reader
Warnings: none, I don't think
summary: What's the hellfire club all about?
----
Yearbook? no. School paper? no. Band? no. Gymnastics....long gone. You honestly had no motivation to do anything for your senior year. I mean, did you have to be in an extra curricular? Your mom was practically begging you to get back into gymnastics, but after last year's embarrasing injury, you were not willing to relive that. Nor were you willing to go the extra mile rehabilitate it into being the perfect athlete either. After looking at the fliers that were pinned to the cork board, you found one flier under all of the other papers.
"Hellfire Club... Friday nights 6 pm. Hawkins High School's old theatre. If you don't have dice, you can borrow some. Curse of Vecna Session 1 10/31/1985. DM: Eddie Munson"
Dungeons and Dragons? You've not played that since your older brother had moved away to college and you lost him as a DM. It seemed that they were already a couple of sessions in, but maybe not too far for an extra character? You took the flier and folded it into your bag and walked to your locker before your last class.
After an hour long torture session of anatomy class you grabbed your car keys as fast as you could and drove home. Once you got home, you put on some more comfortable clothes and dug through your old drawer of things and grabbed your dice, an old character sheet, and a pencil or two.
Your mom heard you run through the house and to your room and she wiped her hands with a kitchen rag. "Y/n, is that you? How was school?" you answered without looking at her as you grabbed some more comfortable shoes. "Uh, yeah it was good. Good enough for first day I guess?" She smiled at you and threw her towel over her shoulder. "I heard they have a gymnastics team...I thought it would be good for you, so I called the school and talked to the coach. Conditioning is starting now."
You rolled your eyes at her vigor to get you back into gymnastics, but that was a wish and a dream. "Mom, I'm not doing that. Plus, I wouldn't even have the time to get back to where I was and... just no. Anyway, I have to go back to the school anyways so I'll be home by 10."
"But y/n, it would be so good for-" and that was all you heard before you shut the door, drove off, and headed to Hawkins High. Getting there, you had never seen the parking lot so empty, but thank god because you were able to find a parking spot that didn't require you to hike to the old theatre.
Campus was dark and things were already weird here in Hawkins, but you tucked your jacket and bag close to you and found the old theatre. Before you opened the door, you already heard what you remembered to be the sounds of people speaking with one another. You already felt bad for showing up when they are probably well established into the campaign, but you'd rather be super early in the campaign instead of super late.
You walked in and as soon as the door shut behind you, four heads turned in your direction. Three obvious freshman, and one tall senior, you assumed, with a long black wavy mullet. "Is that a girl?" you heard one of them whisper. "Uhm, I'm sorry, but the new theatre is holding auditions, not this one." the tall one said to you.
"Is this the hellfire club?" you asked. Everyone's eyebrows raised and the tall one unfolded his arms and walked towards you. You held out your hand to shake, which he did not take. "Are you Eddie? I saw this flier on the cork board in the hall. I know it's been a couple of weeks since your first session, but I was hoping I could play?"
Eddie turned to look at the party and then back at you. He scratched his head and looked at you as if to say 'you might be in the wrong place'. "I mean, have you played D&D before? The party we have is level 8 right now and you wouldn't want to just-" He started to say but your excitement beat him to it.
"Oh no, that's fine. I actually already have my character sheet. I made a teifling bard warlock. She's multi classed evenly. I've played before but I've not been able to play in a while. If it's too much I understand. I just saw you were playing and thought-" You saw the smirk grow on Eddie's face and he stuck his hand out to introduce himself.
"I'm Eddie, I'm the DM." You smiled and took his hand and replied "Y/n. New student." From there he put his hands in his pockets and asked "Do you have dice?" You plopped your bag on the playing table, careful not to knock over any miniatures, and pulled out your dice tray, your player's handbook, your old miniature, and your favorite set of purple dice. "You can say, I'm quite excited."
Eddie let out a small and almost inaudible laugh, but you caught it and it made you smile. "Pick your spot at the table." he said. Everyone rushed to their favored spots, leaving you at the opposite head of the table from Eddie. Everyone prepared their materials and Eddie dimmed the theatre lights for ambiance.
"Everyone, this is y/n. She is our newest addition to the table. Everyone, go around." You went around the table and met the three younger players named Mike, Dustin, and Lucas. Mike was a Palladin, Dustin introduced himself ruggedly as a master artificer, and Lucas acted out his ranger skills as he introduced his character.
When it came to your turn, you smiled, flirtatiously extended your arms onto the table being very in character and introduced yourself. "My name is Agony, I'm a Tiefling Bard Warlock multi-class." You donned fingers for horns on your head to mimic your character and laughed as you sat down.
Eddie smiled behind his interlocked hands as you introduced yourself and sat up straight in his DM throne. "Now that we have met one another, I need everyone to roll for perception." Everyone rolled their dice, Mike was doing the math on his modifiers to add to his role, and dustin and Luke groaned as they clearly rolled a low number on their dice. You shot up in excitement and smiled "Nat 20!" The party clapped for you as you started the session strong.
After four hours of playing, Dustin, Mike, and Luke all spoke with one another as they waved and said goodbye to you on their way out. You got your things together and Eddie came by you holding his campaign book. "Great session today, Y/n. I hope to see you next Friday. Do you have a ride home?" he asked politely. You smiled and thanked him letting him know you drove here. He nodded his head toward the door offering to walk you to your car and smiled. You immediately knew finding that flier was the best thing you could have done for yourself this year.

Build-A-Bed — Dick Solomon
Tumblr media
Summary: A trip to IKEA with Dick was maybe not your best idea, but perhaps you both can manage to come out of it unscathed.
Word Count: 1,378
Warnings: None, just fluff and humor in this one and a little tender/romantic moment at the end
Tumblr media
"Listen, if I’m moving in here, I want a new bed," you told him, and that was that.
You half expected a fight or some weird attachment he had to the old mattress and bed frame where he stubbornly refused to let it go for some reason, but Dick simply shrugged and said, "Alright."
You spent the rest of the day at his place, mostly ignoring the comings and goings of his family members and comfortably watching tv with his arm around you. When a commercial for the IKEA furniture store outlet came on, that’s when you could smell trouble brewing. "Ooh, can we go there for our new bed," Dick asked with all the enthusiasm of a child at a toy store.
Dick didn’t seem to have the trepidation about that place that you did, but the way he was looking at you made it hard to say no. Everyone has to experience the place once, don’t they? "Yeah. I guess it’s as good a place as any," you’d agreed. That was how the two of you ended up at IKEA.
After a considerable hike through the parking lot to the entrance, you were already wishing you could head back home and forget the whole thing. With one look over at Dick, you sighed and remembered why you were there at all. You could practically feel the excitement radiating off of him.
His eyes sparkled with wonder from the first moment the two of you stepped inside. "This place is huge," he exclaimed, his eyes traveling up to the ceiling and then back down and ahead to the furthest wall. That was an understatement, you thought, but hey, who were you to spoil this for him?
Not eager to tour the entirety of the store, you were at least able to steer him in the direction of the bedroom furniture. That was, after all, why you’d come. You passed several ornately decorated displays of full rooms on your way and you had to slow your pace because Dick was utterly fascinated. "Why don’t we just move in here? There’s a whole house in here, but it seems to be deconstructed."
"They’re just displays. No one lives here," you informed, adding a "probably" under your breath. "They’re just showing you how your house could look."
"Well I like it. Look at all the fun colors and soft pillows. Why can’t we have nice things?"
You sighed. "We do. It’s just not these nice things," you gently reminded.
"Hmm, I suppose you’re right, but it’s all so pretty and new."
You fought the smile that tugged at your lips at his look of pouty disappointment. Then you reached for his hand and he was smiling again, ready for you to resume leading the way to the correct department. When you finally reached the section for beds, Dick fell in love with one instantly. He jumped right into the room display, pulling you right along with him. "I want this one," he declared with hardly a glance at any other option. "Just feel the headboard. It’s velvety." You didn’t even have to feel the deep green fabric to know it was true, but you did anyway.
"Are you sure this is the one you want," you asked after a couple of moments.
Dick nodded his head enthusiastically. "As long as you like it too. We will be sharing it after all." Despite his words, you could see that he’d be heartbroken if you said you didn’t like it. Lucky for him, you did, and frankly you didn’t want to be stuck there longer than you had to so it worked out for the both of you.
As you got yourself off of the bed and started back down the long aisle to the checkout, where you planned on telling the cashier you wanted everything in the display, which included the bed frame, headboard, mattress and pillows, you realized Dick wasn’t following behind you. "Why are all of these named so funny? Are they even in english? Is this language even from this planet?"
"Dick, this isn’t alien furniture. It's, uh, Swedish, I think."
"Aliens? Who said anything about aliens? It’s a funny language, that’s all." You didn’t dare question him when he got this weird. It was best to just put on a smile and let it pass you by.
He put his hand back in yours and you walked together to the front of the store. "We’d like to get the display that has the green velvet headboard," you said politely.
"Ah, the Tufjord," the cashier said, and you were thankful he knew what it was called. "I will have someone bring the appropriate things to your car. Will that be cash or credit?" You handed the young man your credit card, and allowed him to scan the appropriate items from a catalog and you paid in full. It’ll be forever until you pay this card off, but you were the one that wanted the new bed.
You had Dick pull the Rambler up around to the loading dock and the boxes were packed as well as they could be into the car with a promise that the mattress would be delivered later that day, since the Rambler was too small to hold it.
While Dick did most of the heavy lifting in getting all of the boxes upstairs, you grabbed the pillows and the new bedding, which was light, but bulky. When the two of you finally made it upstairs with it all, the real work began. You pulled the instructions for how to assemble the bed frame and attach the headboard out of the box and began to look them over. As you did, Dick just started trying to put things together, getting immensely frustrated when he wasn’t getting results on his very first try.
You soon took over, delegating him the job of handing you parts as you needed them, and when there was significantly less to do, you even let him help. You were surprised it went as well as it did after those first couple of bumps in the road. Harry and Sally had even brought up the mattress when it arrived at just about the time you were finishing up with getting the headboard attached.
How the two of them managed getting the damn thing up that staircase truly baffled you. All you knew was that it had taken a lot of yelling on Sally's end before it finally reached your bedroom. Regardless, seeing as you were utterly spent after assembling the bed, you were grateful you didn’t have to wrangle it upstairs.
The bedroom was finally starting to look like it was meant for the both of you. It had elements of each of you, and you smiled at your collective handiwork before collapsing onto your brand new mattress. Dick was quick to join you and after a moment of allowing your muscles to relax, you shifted your weight, so you were leaning back against the velvet headboard, which you had to admit was a phenomenal choice.
"Did you have fun today," you asked him. He scooted closer to you, draping an arm over your shoulders.
"Yes, I did. I want to redo the whole house."
You managed a tired smile as you patted his chest. "Not today. In fact, not for a while, please. Let’s just enjoy our bedroom for the time being."
Dick seemed to ponder it a moment, before agreeing. "Okay. I think I can live with that. I like our bedroom."
As you rested your head on Dick's chest, your smile only grew. You liked the sound of the words 'our bedroom' as they left his mouth. "I do too. I love you, Dick." You think perhaps that’s the first time you’d said that aloud, at least so plainly. You'd said it in many other ways before, but never like you did just now. And you meant it, wholeheartedly, for maybe the first proper time in your life. You heard a blubber come from him as he tried to hold back his tears of joy. What a beautiful way to end the day, there, in your shared room, your new bed, and being comfortably held in Dick's arms.

Volume 5 Part 2
The most anticipated part of the week was my trip to Busan. There was a lot of switching up with the original plan which was to go for the weekend with Grace and Bianca. It ended up being that Bianca was staying the whole weekend, I was only going for a day, and Grace wasn’t going at all.
I remember being obsessed with the movie Train to Busan a couple years ago. Vivian and I even made both of our families watch it. It felt surreal to take the same exact route from Seoul Station to Busan Station.
Tumblr media
Our already long 3 hour ride was delayed so we ended up getting there an hour after, at around 2:20 pm. I knew it was going to be a long day as my return ride was leaving shortly after 10 pm so we had to hustle. We took this mini tour bus to one of the cultural villages. The bus ride was absolutely insane and ten times worse than the worst MBus driver.
The actual village was super pretty and nice to look at. It was refreshing to see so much color in one space and on buildings after being surrounded by bland high rises in Seoul. This layout reminded me a lot of San Francisco and Capitola Beach. It was very quiet too which was nice.
Bianca told me this was where a lot of refugees went to live after the Korean War so it was a lot more traditional than the trendy cafes and buildings elsewhere. The village was painted and decorated as a part of the Village Art Project, and has become a tourist attraction since. There were a lot of houses and old people there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My favorite part was this trinket shop near the entrance. There was this cute golden retriever dog named Honey Jar and there was a sign that said to call him Jar.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The entrance had all the fun foods and snacks as the rest of the village was mostly houses and older restaurants.
Tumblr media
I liked how there were little stories behind parts of the village. This stairway was called Stairway to See Stars because people would feel dizzy when going up the 148 steps with heavy loads on their backs.
Tumblr media
We couldn’t stay too long at the village and booked it to the beach. Apparently Haeundae Beach is the most famous beach in Busan, but it was a little underwhelming. I’m sure the night view is more impressive than what we saw though. It just looked like sand on the side of the road, but it was peaceful. Swimming wasn’t even permitted, but I did see people surfing at the coast.
Tumblr media
Bianca’s kind of an old man and likes to do old people things. Busan is her type of life. She would love it to sit on the beach, hike mountains, go fishing, and watch the sunset every day of her life. She says she just walks and walks when she’s traveling alone and gets up to 20-30,000 steps. She told me she was going to climb a mountain the next day.
It wasn’t long before our beach train time slot.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We rode sideways and saw the water. It was pretty, but nowhere near as nice as our sky capsule ride.
We booked a ride from 7:30 - 8 pm and it was actually the most perfect timeslot. We got to see the entire sunset and night lights.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We got off at the Blue Line Park which was filled with lights.
Tumblr media
We both wanted to try authentic raw marinated crabs, but all the crab restaurants closed at 8 so we couldn’t get them. We opted for this porridge place that also served seafood dishes. Again, I’m not big into seafood, but we were in Busan so we felt obligated.
I got this bean sprout hangover soup which had an abalone in it. It was my first time trying an abalone.
Tumblr media
Anyways I was really nervous about traveling back by myself. Bianca was so nice and took a taxi with me back to the station before going to her hotel. Once I got there I found out that my train departure was being delayed by half an hour. I waited by myself and eventually boarded. It was very scary because I had booked the last train from Busan to Seoul of the night so I couldn’t afford to mess up.
Luckily I did not mess up and got to Seoul at around 1:30 am. I immediately felt a lot safer there than Busan. I don’t know why but Busan was a little scary. We passed by buildings with totally busted windows and a lot of the city looked less populated/abandoned. There were also a significantly less amount of traffic lights which was intimidating.
The subway didn’t start again until 5 am and I didn’t want to call a taxi/get in by myself so I walked about 40 minutes back to campus. It honestly wasn’t even that bad because of all the street lights. There were still shop owners out cleaning up and people walking around.
I came back and took the whole day to sleep and rest. Grace and I went to the witch restaurant again, but this time in Hongdae because there looked to be more menu options. We also wanted the blue blood bag drink this time.
I got this mummy pizza that was pretty good. One thing stood out to me and that was that all of the pizzas said that they were made with pastry dough. That was true as it was super flaky. I was able to eat more that way which was nice. It’s interesting to see how everything in Korea is made to be sweet. I know that a lot of my classmates aren’t real big fans of that.
Tumblr media
Seeing as I leave very soon, I am trying to get one more full day of fun. I’m really disappointed that the Ewha merch shop has been closed for the rest of the month because I wasn’t able to buy anything.
It’s definitely been an experience I’ll never forget, but I do want to go home.

Was anyone else abused thru forced exercise? Like I can remember my brother being punished by sadistic exercise routines and stuff but most of the time it wasn’t even punishment. It was just my parents being psycho. Something that’s been depressing me is that when my mom visited a couple months ago, I felt bad because I didn’t realize how much her body had deteriorated. She’s still healthy enough but she can’t hike like she used to. We only did 3-4 miles but she started to be in pain towards the end and I was sympathetic and helped her out when we got home. Then I thought about it… I showed her way more care than she did towards her own children when we were growing up (story of my life but anyway).
Almost every vacation we took was full of hiking. I was tiny and the only girl for a while and my dad literally wrote a song to make fun of me for being “delicate.” Neither my sister and I could keep up with the rest of the family and my parents would just leave us behind on trails! This was out in national parks. I was hiking in Arizona as early as age 3, and I remember doing a 14 mile hike at age 7. Typically the hikes were 3-10 miles, often strenuous. Sometimes we did more than one a day, and we usually didn’t get any days off. It was absolutely fucking exhausting. I’d get horrible cramps in my stomach, I’d be hungry, thirsty, and bored. And they just didn’t give a shit. No complaining, we should just be grateful for the opportunity. Pretty sure my ankles and feet were damaged because of overexercise at a young age.
When I was around 6, my family visited Yosemite and we started doing the upper falls hike. Around halfway up I begged to stop and, for the only time I can remember, my mom granted mercy and took me back down the mountain (possibly because she was also having a hard time). But my actual sadist of a father forced my brothers to finish it. Years later when we visited the park again, trying to prove I was tough, I did climb myself. And I had horrible leg pain for MONTHS afterwards. The hike is so steep that going back down is just as bad as going up, and honestly it’s pretty dangerous. The fact that my dad made my six year old and eight year old brothers do it is just shameful. They were resentful of me for years after I got out of it that first time.
My mom always signed me up for sports, whether I wanted to do them or not. There was a lot of embarrassment involved there, but I could usually just get over it. Around age 12 though, she forced me to join a professional swim league. I am a strong but not fast swimmer. I was okay with summer league but this was something different: two hour practices in Olympic length pools. We got yelled at if we stopped to breathe. I felt like I was drowning. It’s incredibly stupid but it turned into a huge power struggle with my mom, ‘cause I started refusing to go and she wouldn’t tolerate any threat to her authority. She of course had given me other body issues (she used to joke about giving all her kids eating disorders) so I would go to practice hungry and tell myself at least I was losing weight. I was literally still a kid, I wasn’t even done growing…
In my teen years, my mom got into CrossFit. She was super annoying about it and made me go too. I hated it of course, and I was usually the only kid there unless my siblings came along. The type of exercise they do is dangerous; to this day I think being forced to do “box jumps” damaged my legs, and CrossFit definitely contributed to my mom’s stress injuries.
This is part of a larger topic I guess: my parents are totally dead to the flesh, don’t even know they have bodies, and tried to rob me of mine too. It’s taken so long to rebuild a healthy relationship to my body and to exercise; it’s been a struggle to balance between avoiding it out of depression or overdoing it out of anxiety.

St Ninian’s Beach
27th June 2023
The sunset was at 10:39 pm last night, and it was a cloudless sky. There’s a few beach walkers at that time, though the light doesn’t fade much, until the official sunrise at 3:23 am.
I soon put off any thought of leaving this morning. It was a clear sky again at 7 am, though in the late morning it clouded over for the rest of the day. We took on the reverse hike to yesterday, getting the rocky headland views that were behind our backs yesterday. There weren’t many people around, but the ones I did see were a real variety..
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A couple from Sierra Vista in Arizona, looking down from 1500 metres altitude to the Mexican border below. They were taking plenty of photographs, which they told me they showed with stories of their travels, to the folk of an old person’s community close by. A captive audience, perhaps that would put my writing on a bigger stage..
A couple from Berlin who had been fascinated by the story of St Magnus when on Orkney, so much so, they were staying in a hotel with that name in Lerwick. To them, I recommended the wonderful George Mackay Brown book, Magnus.
A couple from Tasmania who were hoping to spot Arctic Terns. Strangely there were none around today. Yesterday there were quite a few. We just about avoided talking cricket.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the last bit of sun before the cloud arrived, I took a swim off the north side of the tombolo when we got back to it. Here, in the busy car park, it’s a better bet than the outdoor shower. It is really good fun swimming with your dog, something I last did in the Mediterranean off southern Spain, and I must do more of. Geographically, this is the North Atlantic, or the Norwegian Sea. It only becomes the Arctic Ocean north of the Faroes, which is the Greenland Sea. Anyway.. my point is, that it wasn’t very warm. Not that I had expected it to be. It was five minutes in, maybe even less, but a lot of fun.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A few other campervans and motorhomes rolled in during the afternoon, but almost all left again. A couple stayed overnight, and there was a guy, with his family, who like me, had been there two nights. He came over for a chat with his dog. He was from Lerwick, and said they often come across and spend a few nights in their camper. This time, before the schools break up next week, when it will be busier.
By the time we took an evening walk around the tombolo it was windy and overcast, with a significant drop in temperature from the morning’s mid-teens to about 10C. Some locals come to exercise as they did yesterday; a gang of swimmers with wet suits, a group of kite flyers, a family of kayakers, and a noisy bunch on a jet-ski. There is still the odd walker at midnight, in the fading light.

Kenya is full of hidden gems that we keep discovering and we want to show our visitors all of them! We recently camped at Suswa Caves, one such hidden gem. Sometimes you just need to get off the beaten track, and although the road through Suswa is the well-beaten track to the Maasai Mara, the diversion to Suswa Caves is very unbeaten. So, at the risk of making Suswa Caves Kenya's hottest destination, I'm going to tell you about our weekend there and how you can enjoy your own adventure. Eight of us headed to Suswa loaded up with camping gear, food and water. Laura and Moses came from their camp in the Maasai Mara with their friend Helen who was visiting from the UK. Kip, Leonie and their daughter Fleur came from Nairobi, like us. We arrived at the turnoff to Mt Suswa Conservancy at the same time as Moses and Laura so we set off together into the conservancy. The road was so dusty! We had to keep almost a kilometre between our vehicles so the ones behind didn't get lost in the cloud. On their way in, Kip and Leonie got stuck in a dust drift - that's how bad it was! After we entered the conservancy we had to find the campsite and set up camp. It wasn't the easiest to find, but some of the local Maasai who take care of the conservancy found us, waved us down and gave us directions. We were pleasantly surprised to find something resembling a toilet block - a hole in the ground surrounded by a structure with the doorway facing away from the campsite. There are two campsites in Mt Suswa Conservancy: one is on the rim of the crater (I forgot to mention that Mt Suswa is an extinct volcano) and the other is next to the caves. We were at the one near the caves. Apart from the crumbling buildings around long drop toilets, there is no other infrastructure at the campsites so you must bring everything. Fortunately we are all ex-overlanders so we are used to spending a couple of nights in the bush and had all the requisite supplies for such an adventure. For a fee the Maasai brought us firewood, but it most likely wasn't environmentally sustainable firewood. Maasai water harvesting The next morning we hiked. We found a guide to take us up to the crater rim of Mt Suswa. On the way he showed us the ingenious method the Maasai have been using to harvest water. Mt Suswa sits in the Great Rift Valley and is one of several volcanoes that caused the Rift Valley to exist; Mt Kilimanjaro and nearby Mt Longonot being two others. This volcanic activity means there are hot springs and geysers throughout the area. In fact this activity has resulted in Kenya Power building a massive geothermal power plant in Hells Gate National Park, which is spitting distance from Mt Suswa. Anyway, the Maasai have put pipes over steam vents in the mountainside in a way that directs the steam down the mountain. By the time the steam has travelled down the pipe, it has condensed to water and drips into a large jerry can. Anyone can come and take water from this source. On our way back to camp after visiting the crater rim, we stopped by the main water collection point and our guide doused each of us in cold water harvested from the steam vents. It seemed a bit extravagant given the dryness of the landscape, but it was also very welcome as it was so hot. On our hike we saw rabbits and shy vervet monkeys, a rare species as most vervet monkeys are very cheeky and not at all shy. We also saw plenty of birds which Kip was thrilled about as he is an avid birder. In the afternoon, our guide took us to (and through) the caves. I would never have guessed how extensive they were and how large. Some were just massive holes in the ground, which might prove a hazard if you weren't looking where you were going! Others were narrow passages which weren't so much my cup of tea. There were a lot of bats, and I didn't fancy coming across one trying to get out while I was trying to get in! We were shown one chamber that was known as the leopard's eating cave.
I'm not sure if it was true or not, I preferred not to think too hard about it as our campsite was quite close. One large cave was called the baboon parliament as it is a favourite gathering place for troupes of baboons. The rocks were shiny and smooth from the baboons sitting on them so much. Next time we go, I think the campsite on the crater rim is preferable to the one near the caves, if only for the view. Hikes need to happen in early morning and late afternoon with a siesta to pass the heat of the day. Conservancy and camping fees are quite reasonable and the man who collects them is very good at knowing that you are in the conservancy - so even if the entrance gate is unmanned, you will still have to pay as he comes to the campsite to check on you. Keep your receipts though, so you can prove payment in case another administrator comes around to check/collect. Source by Tracey A Bell

Saturday July 9
We woke up Saturday morning with the sun coming in upper window of our room. We’re pretty far north and the days are seem to be long! We got up and had breakfast of yogurt, granola, and bananas. I used the coffee pot to make hot water for my tea.
We decided to head out and do one of the easiest trails that starts in downtown Banff, but we saw that we could walk the Tunnel Mountain Drive and intersect the trail. Last night, there was a wedding going on in the meadow just outside of our room. When we got outside today we walked into the meadow to have a look. We were surprised to see two female elk and two elk calves on the edge of the meadow, a wonderful site! We continued walking up the road and after about a mile we joined the trail. What had been a peaceful morning, turned out a bit chaotic as there were about 20 cars parked at the trail head, and vans dropping off loads of people. There was a large group of Europeans that started just behind us and chatted excitedly as they walked. That drives me a bit bonkers, and we finally just stopped and let them pass.
We encountered a woman with two dogs, and she told us she had just encountered an aggressive fox! She told us she was going to go report it, we kept our eye out, but didn’t see a fox on our way up. The trail was almost all up, and we had gorgeous views at first down into Banff, and later down into our meadow and the edge of our resort. We could also see the river and the golf course. We really enjoyed the hike. It was about 2 miles up, we didn’t linger at the top because the Europeans were there chatting excitedly again, so we snapped a photo and headed down.
On the way down, a couple ahead of us noticed a fox running through the woods. It was blonder than our foxes, but sure didn’t seem to be aggressive. A few minutes later, we encountered a ranger on her way up in search of the fox. I asked the ranger if the fox maybe could have been reacting to the woman’s dogs, and the ranger said yes, if she was protecting her den. I’m not a fan of people walking dogs in the forest like this!
The trail head at the bottom of the trail had been rerouted due to road construction, but we poked our way through there anyway. We headed to downtown Banff and decided we were hungry enough to have another breakfast. We looked at a few places that seemed really crowded already, and headed to a back street, where we found a vegan place and had the most amazing chickpea omelettes. With about 4 miles in already, we thought we’d find another small hike for the afternoon.
We headed back to the information place, because we realized we needed to figure out the public transportation since parking seems to be a big deal everywhere. There we found a gentleman that was really helpful, and pulled up the schedule for the Mt. Norquay shuttle. That would take us close to the trail head for the Upper Stoney Trail, which would be another 4 mile hike.
We headed to where all the shuttle buses meet, but were still a little confused about the Mt Norquay shuttle. It finally dawned on us that this was a special shuttle run by the Mt Norquay ski area, and after about five minutes the shuttle appeared! We rode along for several stops around Banff and then headed up to the Mt Norquay ski area. We learned that the shuttle runs every hour, with the last one at 7:30 PM. We figured that was plenty of time for us to hike 4 miles!
The driver was nice enough to point out the trailhead to us, so we got off the bus and headed back down the road to the trailhead. The other bus riders were headed up the chairlift for a different kind of more laid-back adventure.
We started climbing right away as soon as we got on the Upper Stoney trail. While it was nice to be essentially alone, it was also a little frightening thinking about bears! We did encounter several couples heading our way, and as we got to the summit we overtook two girls that were spending a lot of time taking selfies and probably posting them to Instagram, and two guys came along as well. I have to admit, I felt better about safety in numbers.
After 2 miles of climbing, we were afforded a gorgeous view, and then had two miles of descent. I tightened the laces on my boots and then felt great going down. We got back to the trailhead, and then hiked up to the ski area, and had about a 10 minute wait for the shuttle - perfect!
Back in Banff, we got off the shuttle, and then hiked about a mile back up to our resort. We showered and had a beer from our fridge and some snacks. Another wedding was occurring on our meadow, so we had entertainment during our cocktail hour. We were thoroughly tired, but felt great about our adventure today. We headed back down to the Prow for dinner. Being Saturday night, the restaurant was busy, so we ate at the bar and were entertained watching a super efficient bartender making cocktails. She was fun to talk to, and was headed to the Calgary stampede in the early part of this week, so we can’t wait to go back and compare notes with her.
Back to our room with a nightcap of Southern Comfort over ice, and two more cribbage games. Tonight we split, and I felt better to get my first win in sometime. Was a beautiful night and we played cribbage out on our balcony, and another wedding (the second of the night) was taking place on the meadow. This one was an Indian couple, so it was really fun to watch the guests appear in their beautiful sari’s. Unfortunately, a rain storm blew in really quick and the attendees had to scatter.

I'm sorry for adding on to your pile of requests but I just wanted some family fluff with sbi where all of the siblings are having fun on a road trip or vacation
I don't know if that's specific enough for you if you want a little more detail maybe they're just being really dumb and making stupid videos with each other because that's something my sister and I do a lot
(A/N): I hope you don’t mind that I added Kristin and Tubbo (BASED ON THE CHARACTERS, NOT ACTUAL PEOPLE). Real life AU btw (no covid tho)
Okokok so this is deadass something Philza and Kristin is both dreading and looking forward to
1. They love spending time with their family especially now since yall are getting older and don’t spend as much time together anymore/getting ready to fly the coop
2. Have you met the SBI fam? Chaos incarnated.
After packing, yall set out on your trip to the hotel yall rented for a week or so (about an eight hour drive away from the house)
You and your twin Tommy 100% smuggle Tubbo underneath all of the luggage and a blanket
You’ll just ask them for forgiveness when you’re about halfway through
It’s easier to ask for forgiveness than permission
Wilbur and Technoblade catching you hiding the stowaway and blackmailing you both into doing their chores for a few week
Seating: Phil and Kristin in the front, Tech and Wil in the middle, You and Tommy in the back, and Tubbo in the trunk (it’s a mom van)
Before getting too far into the trip, a gas station is raided for snacks and drinks
Philza raising a brow at the amount of food you and Tommy get
Philza’s eyes were torn off from the refrigerator in front of him by his wife lightly nudging him. Looking at her in question, she raised her eyebrows and pointed at their youngest kids. It looked like they were just looking at the Monster drinks, so why- oh god the last thing he needed was two already hyper teenagers hopped up on Monster trapped in a car for eight hours. Before he could go over there to stop them, Kristin grabbed his arm.
“They’re up to something. Listen to what they’re saying.”
He strained his ears to hear what you both are whispering to each other. “...e like this flavor?”
Tommy shrugged, “I dunno. I’ll text him.”
As Tommy texted someone, Phil looked back at his wife. She wore a similar wary expression as they both stared at each other. He nodded in confirmation, “definitely. How do you reckon we confront them?”
He watched as his wife thought for a moment before she sighed and looked at him with a hint of excitement in her eyes, “let’s wait to see. It might be a pleasant surprise.”
“What? Are you mad?” He eyed his youngest gremlins once more. It seemed that they finally decided on a flavor and are now moving on to the snack portion. He looked back at his wife and felt his heart skip a beat at the small grin on her face. “...fine. Let’s just see what they’re doing after they do it.” Oh, the things he does for love.
He kept a very close eye on you two after that
You both are on your phones for longer than usual
Texting Tubbo so that he wasn’t lonely
Tubbo has fun with hiding too, never being bored at all
The only thing that he (and you and Tommy) struggled with was holding in his laughter
You jumped as you felt someone gently slap your shoulder. Turning around, you saw Tubbo’s hand peeking over the backs of the seats. You glanced at your parents in the front seats, they were deep in conversation. Good. You saw Tommy stifle a laugh and pull out his phone to record.
Tubbo made grabby hands at something but you didn’t know what he wanted, so you decided to mess with him a bit. Smirking, you put your earbuds in his hand. It snaked back underneath the blanket before he threw it back at you and did more intense grabby hands. You put your metal water bottle in his hand. He did the same thing before he threw it back at you. It collided with your forehead with a loud bong sounding throughout the car. Tommy started to laugh loudly and ended the video. You followed suit in the laughter as Tubbo’s hand froze midair and quickly slinked back into his lair.
All noise in the car came to a halt as they all looked behind them (well, Phil glanced through the rearview mirror suspiciously) to see you and Tommy laughing your asses off with you holding your forehead. Through blurred vision, you could see Kristin looking at you with worry and Techno and Wilbur looking confused and mildly annoyed.
“(Y/n) honey are you alright? What happened?” You opened your mouth to respond, but only wheezes came out making you laugh harder. You could hear Tubbo silently cackling to himself in the back, the blanket shaking slightly. Without being able to speak, you only nodded your head and gave her a thumbs up.
Tommy sent the video into the siblings' group chat and you could see over Wilbur’s shoulder as he watched it before starting to cackle and save the video to his phone. Even Techno got a good chuckle out and saved it to his phone making Phil and Kristin even more suspicious. Well, Kristin was just excited for what you two (four? Was Techno and Wilbur in on it as well?) had planned. Phil could just imagine the chaotic things you had planned. And he did not like what came to his mind.
When the rest stop came eventually (about three hours into the trip), you all left the car to stretch your legs and take care of business
Taking separate ways to walk in pairs (same person they sat next to in the car)
You and Tommy wait until Phil and Kristin leave before getting Tubbo out of the trunk
You three vibe walking along the winding sidewalks for a bit before you come back to the car and get Tubbo back into the trunk
You, however, forgot to use the bathroom so you leave Tommy and Tubbo in the car
“Fuck, I forgot to use the bathroom. I’ll be right back.”
“Be quick, I’m not fuckin telling em if we forget you.”
“Pfft, they won’t forget me. Stop joking around.”
With that, you left the car and made a beeline to the bathroom. After that, you went back to the car. Well, where the car was supposed to be. There was no sight of a van anywhere in the parking lot. That asshole, he just let them drive off? He and Tubbo’s probably giggling to themselves in the backseat like school girls. You were only gone for like eight minutes.
Sighing, you walked over to a nearby bench and sat down, pulling up Techno’s contact and calling him.
He picked up after a few rings. The second you heard the dial tone stop, you spoke to him, “check the backseat.”
“What? You’re taking a nap, why’re you calling me I’m literally right in front of you.”
“Just fuckin check, Tech.”
In the background, you could hear Tommy snickering to himself. You heard some rustling before Techno started laughing, “Dad, we left (y/n) at the rest stop.”
“YEAH YA FUCKIN DID!”
You could hear loud laughter from your brothers and muffled cursing from Phil. You heard Kristin tell Techno to hand her the phone.
“We’re so sorry, we’re turning around right now. We’ll be there in about five minutes. Stay in one place and don’t talk to strangers.”
“I dunno Mom, that trucker looks really friendly. Might do some hitch hiking with him.”
You ended up befriending an old lady when she sat next to you on the bench with her husband. She even gave you some butterscotch and those strawberry hard candies that all older people somehow have but you can never find in stores. Her husband was telling you stories about his younger days when you saw the familiar van pull into the parking lot. Waving goodbye, you thanked them and hopped back into the car.
After profuse apologizing from your family and scolding Tommy for tricking them, you were on the road again. You glared at Tommy with a small smile on your face, “you fuckin prick. Did you seriously make it look like I was sleeping under a blanket?”
“Yeah, I told you that I wouldn’t tell them if we forgot you.”
“You fuckin dick,” you grabbed a few butterscotches and strawberry candies and handed some to Tubbo after ensuring your parents weren’t looking. He took them gratefully and quickly. You heard him whisper a ‘thank you’ and opened them with plastic crinkling.
“Wha- are those butterscotches? Gimme some.” He was about to snatch them out of your hands before you moved away from him. “No, you left me at the rest stop. You don’t get any. Do you guys want some? I’ve got butterscotches and strawberry candies.”
After you handed them out to your family, Phil looked at you confused in the rearview mirror, “(y/n), where’d you get these?”
“Oh, I just made some friends with an old couple while I was waiting.”
“You what? What if they kidnapped you?”
“Naw they couldn’t’ve. Ethel has hip problems and Charles was in a wheelchair. They were chill anyway.”
“...Just- just don’t do that again.” “Well don’t forget me again at a rest stop three hours away from home and you got yourself a deal.”
After a while the family was chill again and everything was back to normal
It was getting closer and closer to when Tubbo would make his reveal
You three agreed that Tubbo would just wait for the perfect time
That time came about three hours later when Phil and Kristin was asking everybody where they should stop for food
“So kids, we have three options: McDonalds, Wendy’s, and Arby’s. What do you want?”
“Wendy’s is obviously the superior choice.” Tommy proclaimed and you nodded in agreement. You leaned back and whispered to Tubbo, “now would be a great time.” You pulled out your phone to discreetly record the front seat.
“No it isn’t. Arby’s is you heathens.” Wilbur chimed in, glancing at his twin for back up. Techno shrugged, “I’m fine with anything as long as it’s edible.”
“I’m more of a fan of Wendy’s myself!” Tubbo’s muffled voice chimed in from his makeshift hut in the trunk. You snickered as Kristin whipped her head around to look at the back seat and Phil’s eyes snapping up to look at you through the rearview mirror.
“...Tubbo?”
“Hi Mrs. Tommy and (y/n)’s mum!” You flipped the camera around just in time to catch Tubbo poking his head out of the blanket and grin sheepishly at them. You panned over to Tommy’s ruby red face as he was holding in his laughter before flipping it back to the front.
“You absolute gremlins, this is what you’ve been hiding?” Phil scolded you and Tommy, his knuckles whitening from gripping the steering wheel. You could see his shoulders bouncing slightly with a slight strain in his voice from holding in chuckles.
“Honey, have you been in the trunk this entire time?”
“Yeah, but it’s quite comfy back here! Tommy and (y/n) gave me pillows and some snacks. Got some stretching done at the rest stop.”
“You’ve been back there for six hours?” Phil’s incredulous voice asked.
“Yep! Don’t worry, I had a lot of room. Anyways, my vote goes to Wendy’s.”
The car was quiet before Kristin started to laugh, “Wendy’s it is. See Phil, I told you it was gonna be a pleasant surprise!”
Tubbo sat between you and Tommy in the backseat for the rest of the trip
Techno and Wilbur saying that they knew Tubbo was back there but left out the blackmail part
There was no way they’d risk losing their little siblings doing their chores for them for a few weeks
At the hotel, the rooming was the same as the seating in the car
You, Tommy, and Tubbo having the time of your lives alone in your hotel room
Jumping on the beds, checking for hidden cameras and double sided mirrors (well, that doesn’t sound fun, but you had fun doing it), truth or dare, racing each other down the halls at night time, the works
B L A N K E T  F O R T S (but always cleaning up the hotel room in the mornings bc yall are respectful to the staff)
Getting plenty of videos of you guys ding dong ditching Techno and Wilbur’s room
Them getting tired of it so they tell Dadza and Momza and they tell you to stop : (
Walking around aimlessly around the hotel hallways with Wilbur and Techno
Going up and down elevators aimlessly
Pulling an all nighter with Tommy and Tubbo on the last day
Philosophical late night talks when yall hardly know what you’re saying anymore (and becoming closer than ever before)
“Tommy, Tubbo?” You three were currently sitting on the balcony chairs looking out at the empty parking lot and the occasional cars driving by. It was about three in the morning and you guys were determined to stay up all night. “If you think about it, a hotdog is puréed meat in an intestine casing. When we eat the hotdogs, we turn it back into puréed meat. It eventually goes through your intestines which makes you the hotdog for a solid couple of hours.”
“...What the fuck, (y/n).”
“No no, they’ve got a point. Don’t you understand, Tommy? We are hotdogs.”
“...I’m starting to think you guys need sleep. Speakin nonsense.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Do you two reckon we’re alone in the universe?”
“What do you mean, Tubbo?” You glanced at the male next to you and raised an eyebrow. He was looking up at the stars with furrowed brows.
“Like, do you guys think there’s life out there. Looking down at us right now wondering the same thing.”
You hummed and looked up at the stars. They were twinkling down at you with the occasional shooting star blazing by. Red lights from far off satellites being the only visible sign of humans in the dark expanse of space. “I think so. I mean, nobody knows how big the universe is. You never really know.”
“Honestly I don’t know what’s scarier, being the only lifeforms and being completely alone or having things out there that we don’t know about.”
You sling an arm over your twin’s shoulders, “that doesn’t matter. As long as we have each other, we’ll never be alone. We’ll face whatever the universe has in store for us together.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I don’t know, I just hate it when people only see me as the loud annoying one. It really gets to me sometimes and I don’t know what I should do about it. Fuck, even Wil and Tech see me like that.”
“Toms, fuck them. They don’t know you like we do. You’re caring, ambitious, and brave.”
“Yeah, don’t listen to what they say. We’ll prove them wrong when we form our own nation one day.”
Tommy’s sullen expression slowly melted into a smile, “yeah, I’d like that. You’d be the president.”
Tubbo grinned back at Tommy, “and you’ll be my trusty vice president and (y/n)’ll be our Secretary of State. We’ll rule together.”
“Our nation would be a place for people to escape tyranny and injustice. Somewhere where men could live free, you two would be amazing leaders.”
“What do we call it though is the question,” Tubbo hummed in thought.
“How about ‘Manberg’?”
You looked at your twin with half lidded, exhausted eyes, “I like it, but it needs more… pizazz. How about L’manberg?”
You watched as he smiled widely at the stars, “it’s perfect.”
Watching the sunrise together on the balcony wrapped in blankets
Sleeping on the rest of the way back home
Best sleep of your life
When you wake up (about an hour or so away from home), you see that there’s blankets over you three and you had your head on Tubbo’s shoulder, Tubbo had his leaned up against the seat behind him, and Tommy’s cheek was squished against the window
You stretch out your limbs a bit trying not to disturb the two beside you
Checking your phone to see pictures of you three sleeping sent into the family group chat with Kristin replying with a bunch of heart emojis
You send the videos and pictures you took along the way of you, Tommy, and Tubbo doing stupid things in the hotel room and in the car
If you looked in the middle row, you could see Wilbur watching the scenery pass by out the window with his earbuds in
Techno is reading one of his books (you have no idea how he doesn’t get car sick)
Phil and Kristin are talking lowly to each other holding hands on the center counsel
Soft radio music is playing in the background
Life is good

Anything else you'd care to tell us about what gets Frankie off (aside from manhandling you and getting you off)? 👀👀
SO!  This was gonna be a nice little bullet point list, but then I got a little stuck on what would be on it and ended up distracted thinking about a couple specific points while I was hopped up on anxiety and too little sleep and too much caffeine so now it’s just a whole goddamn fic!  I have been staring at this for so long I have no idea if it’s good anymore so Happy Thanksgiving / I’m sorry, YMMV.
Risk and Reward
Excruciatingly shameless Frankie/F!Reader smut, 4.2k+ words (don’t ask me I don’t know what happened either), unbeta’d bc I’m impatient and the offered beta-er went to sleep, moderately edited bc I cannot linear a thought process.
Warnings: praise kink, risky sex, dirty talk, road hand (this is apparently what it’s called???), semi-public sex, semi-feral Frankie, car sex (truck sex?), unprotected sex (do as I say, not as I fictionalize), cream pie, implied come-eating (not actually shown).

It’s nothing you mean to start.  It’s just a congratulatory kiss on the cheek and a soft mutter of “Good job, baby,” when Frankie thrashes Benny at a game of pool at the bar.  It’s been a rough week, and it’s good to see him enjoying himself and not propped up miserably on your couch while you try to work the knots out of his shoulders and neck for the fourth night in a row.  He preens a little at the attention, eyes downcast but with a crooked smile that stops just on the verge of smug.  You loop your arm around his waist to keep him close, hooking your fingers under his belt, and as Frankie raises his head for a proper kiss you catch a wicked little glimmer in his eye.
His mouth hits yours and there’s nothing telling in that, it’s perfectly sweet and nearly chaste, but his hand slips up to the back of your neck, squeezing gently like a thank you.  The wheels in your head are turning a little slow courtesy of the drink you’ve been nursing while you watched Frankie play, and it takes a long, long moment for the thought to finally land: he likes it when you praise him.  It was possibly the easiest of his inclinations to find - the first time you’d taken him to bed and locked your ankles around him and told him how fucking good he felt had dragged such a gut-wrenching sound out of him you’d thought he’d pulled a muscle until he’d begun to move faster.
You hadn’t considered that maybe that might push his buttons outside of the bedroom, but now you’re thinking maybe it’s worth a try.
Frankie tugs you along back to the table to sit, scooting close enough that your chairs knock into each other whenever one of you shifts, but it’s enough for you to lean into the crook of his arm comfortably.  You drift through the conversation, not feeling any pressing need to be included, just pleased to be close enough to feel the way laughter buzzes through Frankie’s chest.
“What about you, Fish?  How’s the mechanic gig working out?”
“Eh, it’s fine,” he says.  “It’s work.”
You nudge him with your elbow.  “Understatement of the century, baby.”
Frankie inclines his head in reluctant agreement.  “We’re shorthanded right now, I’ve been picking up extra shifts.  But the boss isn’t a complete prick, and it’s good money, so…”  He trails off, shrugging as if that’s the only explanation needed.
He’s modest to a fault, god bless him, and you sigh with exasperated affection as you knock your head against his shoulder.  “Well I’m proud of you, baby.  You’ve been working your ass off.”
Santi points a finger over his beer.  “Ooh, careful, man, you ain’t got much of that to spare.”
Frankie mutters a short stream of Spanish over the top of your head - the only word you manage to catch in your limited vocabulary being pendejo - and the other man grins.
“Language, Francisco,” Santi says, one hand to his chest as though scandalized.  “There are ladies present.”
You laugh, craning your neck to place a kiss by Frankie’s ear.  “Don’t listen to him, baby, you’ve got a cute ass.”
His cheek grows warm, and warmer still when Benny cuts in: “All right, ease up on hype routine before we gotta call emergency services to get Fish’s giant fuckin’ head out the door.”
“We got a hacksaw in the truck, it’s fine,” you insist, giving Frankie’s thigh a squeeze under the table.  “Not my fault you yahoos have never heard of positive reinforcement.”
Frankie’s chuckle is so low you almost miss it, his face hidden under the bill of his hat.  Santi eyes this display with one of his impressive eyebrows hiked.  He meets your gaze for a second, a knowing smirk on his face that suggests he at least is fully aware of what you’re pulling on his friend right now.  You only smile, sip your drink, and let your hand wander out of sight up and down Frankie’s thigh.
Abruptly Santi thumps Benny’s shoulder with the back of his hand.  “C’mon Benny-boy, I feel like knocking balls around.  I’ll let you win the first round, get you some of your pride back.”
Benny scrunches his face up, scooting away from the table with his hands spread.  “Like hell.  You ain’t letting me do shit, Pope, I’ll kick your ass fair and square.”
Santiago tips you a wink as he ushers Benny off to the pool table.  “Behave yourselves.”
“Hell no,” you shoot back, and he grins.
Immediately Frankie’s mouth brushes your ear.  “You’re a menace,” he says, a little heat crackling through his amusement like dry lightning.
It’s a small effort to school your expression into something reminiscent of innocence before you turn to face him.  “What, can’t a girl pay her boyfriend a compliment?”  You trail your hand up, brushing the back of your knuckles against his fly.  His jeans feel just a bit tighter than they really ought to, and it absolutely delights you.
His eyes seem to darken; no small feat in the already dim light of the bar.  “I know what you’re up to,” he says, that small, pleased smile still curling the corners of his mouth.
“And?” you press, a little laughter coloring your voice.  “Is it working?”
He doesn’t answer, but the way he looks at you suggests he finds it funny you even have to ask.
Emboldened now, you leave a kiss against the corner of his mouth and press your hand a little more firmly between his legs.  “Come on.  You work so hard, and you always take such good care of me.  Let me be sweet on you, Frankie.  You’ve been so good, you deserve a little praise.”
“Querida,” he mutters, low and light enough that his voice nearly cracks.  If it weren’t for the feel of him stiffening you might’ve mistaken the tone for embarrassment rather than barely concealed excitement.
You smile at him, all sugar, and cup him through his jeans, the outline of him clear against the fabric.  “Say it, Frankie.  C’mon baby.  Tell me you’ve been good.”
The bulge under your hand twitches hard and swells, the denim stretching even tighter.  “We’re leaving,” he announces quietly, pulling his coat into his lap as he stands.  “Now.”
Grinning, you stand, unhurriedly slipping on your own coat and waving as Frankie ushers you past the pool table and towards the front door.
“Good night, boys,” you call back over your shoulder.
Santi laughs, and the last thing you hear before the door closes is him announcing to Benny: “Told you.  Not even five minutes.  Pay up, bud.”
Ever the gentleman, even now, he follows you to the passenger side to get the door.  You stretch up, offering a kiss in thanks, but he damn near collapses into it, pushing against you so suddenly the backs of your legs strike the step behind you and you almost lose your balance.  Luckily Frankie’s reflexes are better than yours, even now, and as quickly as you start to feel your balance go he gets an arm around your back, dragging your body flush to his again.  The surprise leaves you giddy and giggling, and before you even know you’re planning on doing it you’re giving his cock a heavy squeeze through his jeans.
“Fuck,” he breathes, breaking away.  “Not here, baby.  Fuck don’t get me started here.  We’ll get caught.”
“Thought you liked it a little risky, Francisco,” you tease, but you still your hand anyway.
“Baby there’s two cruisers parked over there,” he says with a thin laugh, jerking his chin over your left shoulder.  “Shaking my dick at the cops is not the kind of risky I like.”
You glance over and sure enough, there’s two police cars in the parking lot, one of them still occupied and idling.  The men inside don’t appear to be paying you any mind, but Frankie’s right: it’s best if it stays that way.  Sputtering laughter, you pull your hand away and cup the sides of his face, thumbs stroking through his coarse stubble.  “Better take me home then.”
Frankie keeps a close eye on the occupied car as you pull out onto the road, eyes returning again and again to the rearview mirror for at least three blocks before he finally seems to relax a little.  He rolls his shoulders, nodding, muttering a quiet affirmative to himself, and then tenses all over again when you slide your hand back up his thigh.
“Baby,” he warns.  There’s a heady mix of panic and excitement in his eyes as his right hand darts out, grabbing your wrist inches away from your prize.
“Both hands on the wheel, baby,” you tell him evenly.  “Let me do this for you.”  And then you wait, thumb rubbing a slow circle across his denim-covered thigh.  It’s an offer, not an order.  You’re honestly not sure if he’s actually good with this idea, and you’re not about to bulldoze him into something he doesn’t want to do on a blind, horny whim.
He squeezes your wrist a little tighter, then nods.  “Okay,” he whispers, and returns his hand to the wheel.
“Good boy.  You’ve got this, Frankie.  Just keep your eyes on the road,” you mutter, shifting a little closer and giving him a slow squeeze.  Your heart’s beating faster now, thrilled at the prospect of what you’re about to do - what he’s about to let you do.  “I know how good you are behind the wheel.  What’s it Santi always says?  ‘Anything with wheels or wings,’ that’s your specialty.  You just focus on the road and let me take care of you.”
“Jesus,” he croaks when you undo his belt, lifting his hips automatically as you draw his zipper down and work his jeans down just enough to let his cock spring free.
You can’t help but crow a little at the sight of him: hard and wavering and already welling a glassy bead of pre-come.  “Fuck, I love how hard you get for me, Francisco,” you murmur as you take him in hand, delighted at the rigid heat under your fingers.  He whimpers at the praise, shoulders pushing back hard against the seat.
He’s silent as you begin to stroke him, his jaw set too tight to allow him to speak.  A small whimper escapes him when you swirl your thumb around the head of his cock, spreading that bead of slickness over it.
To his credit, the truck doesn’t waver in the slightest.  He damn near drives a razor-line down the highway, speed so steady you would’ve thought it was cruise control.  The only real show that this is costing him any kind of effort is the way the steering wheel creaks under his white-knuckle grip.  It’s still early enough that the roads aren’t fully deserted, and it’s taking all of his concentration to keep his focus on what his hands are doing instead of what your hands are doing.
The light at the intersection ahead turns from yellow to red and he slows to a stop, one hand trembling on the gear shift. In the brief reprieve his eyes slip closed, allowing himself just a minute to fully focus on the sweet, overwhelming friction of your hand.  He shudders, sinking back into the seat as all the pleasure he’d tried to tamp down overspills.  His hips jerk up into your hand, sharp at first and then rocking, chasing the sensation.  A deep, sweet groan tumbles out of his open mouth and Frankie’s eyes flutter closed, his head dropping against the back window hard enough to make it rattle.
“Good, baby?”
“Fuck yes,” he breathes.
It’s wonderful to see him like this, so willingly overwhelmed and aching for what you want to give him.  It lights you up, a bright, sweet ache that starts low in your belly and blooms out everywhere, flaring up hotter with every little sound he makes.  The heater’s blowing now, warmth swirling around your legs and you hike your dress up, pressing your fingers insistently against your clit through your tights.
A moan escapes you before you can stop it, teeth clamping down on your lower lip just a bit too late.  Frankie’s head whips around at the sound, mouth agape at the sight of you with one hand around his cock and the other working half-hidden between your legs.  And then you’re reminded of just how fast this man can be, because one moment his right hand is resting on the gear shift and the next it’s pushing your own fingers aside to rub eagerly at your clothed slit.  The fabric is absolutely soaked through, and Frankie swears under his breath.
“You get this wet for me, baby?” he all but whispers, rubbing a slow, firm circle over your clit.
Sighing, you cover his hand with your own, trying to match your strokes with the rhythm of his fingers.  “Mm-hm.  Just for you, Frankie.  You look so sweet like this, I can’t help it.”
“I promise you, baby, you look sweeter.  Fuck, I could eat you up.  Wanna tear these fucking tights off you and bury my face in your sweet little pussy until you can’t think of anything else.”  He’s quiet - he’s always so quiet - but somehow the gentle rasp of his voice only serves to make that stream of filth even hotter.
A sudden honk makes you both jump, Frankie spitting out a stream of obscenity in Spanish while you can only give an undignified squeak.  The light, you realize as you look up, has gone green again.
Frankie fumbles the truck back into gear, waving an apology to the person behind you. As soon as he’s got the truck into gear his hand returns to you, trying to take its place between your legs again.  Despite literally everything in you that desperately wants to feel those thick fingers against your desperately aching cunt, you shake your head.
“Both hands on the wheel, Frankie,” you remind him, considerably more breathless this time than the first.  “The sooner you get me home the sooner you can take these off me just like you want.”
“Jesus fucking Christ, you’re killing me, baby,” he pants shakily as he settles both hands on the wheel again and eases down the road.
Control is a little harder to come by now that he’s let it slip, his body turned into a perpetual motion machine, rocking back and forth without the need for his input.  He’s dripping like mad, enough that your hand slides easy back up his length.  Your fingers glide over the slick head and he shudders, swearing, and thumps his heel against the floor.
“Don’t-” he chokes, and his hips press up hard against your hand as a thick runner of pre-come trickles down the underside of his cock.
You slow, squeezing him rhythmically.  “‘Don’t’ what, baby?  You want me to stop?”
He groans, gritting his teeth.  “No.  N-no, no.  Just...fuck, if you keep going you’re gonna make me come.  Don’t make me come like this, baby, please.”
“You got something else in mind?  Tell me, Frankie.  You deserve a reward.  Tell me what you want.”
“Christ,” he pants, searching for words and coming up empty, his ability to think stretched far too thin trying to drive a straight line while you nudge him closer and closer to the edge.   “Madre de fucking Dios, baby, goddamn it.”
Home is still a good five minutes away, but there’s no way Frankie’s going to make it that far.  Grasping his cock tight at the base, you scoot in closer until your chin’s on his shoulder and you can press your mouth right up against his ear.  “Easy, Frankie.  Take a breath, and tell me what you want.”
There’s a thin whistle as he hitches in a deep breath, the loose front of his t-shirt drawing tight under his jacket as his chest expands.  He holds it for a dizzying moment, pulse thudding so heavily his cock bobs in your grip with it.
“I want to fuck you, querida,”  he whines.  “Lemme fuck you, baby, please.  I don’t want to wait until we get home, I want to feel you on my cock now.”
The heat that’s been pooling in your belly bursts into a goddamn fireball, and any desire you had to keep your hand on the reins in this little scenario, to make him wait for it just a little longer, wholly evaporates.  The skin high up on his neck is cool when you press your lips against him, smooth at first and then raising up into goosebumps when you whisper: “Pull over, Frankie.”
“Fuck, I- fuck.”   His throat works, eyes darting between the road and the mirrors, and then his arm shoots out, holding you back against the seat.  There’s a side road ahead, choked with weeds and largely unused, and Frankie takes the turn onto it one-handed, killing the engine as soon as he gets the truck far enough into the weeds to be mostly unnoticed.
And then he’s on you, his mouth crashing into yours with a staggering intensity, dragging you up to straddle his lap and sliding his hands underneath your dress.  His fingers hit the apex of your thighs, catching at the sodden seam of your tights and wrenching them apart.  The sound of fabric ripping is startlingly loud in the small space, and you gasp against his mouth, stealing his breath.
Your head spins, wondering if maybe you teased him just a bit too far, but then there’s another rip and your panties are gone, too, fluttering down to catch on the brake pedal.  The hot, wet head of his cock nudges your entrance and suddenly your only thought becomes - oh fuck, oh fuck, oh fuck.  You brace yourself for the jolt, because even as wet as you are Frankie is big, and you’re certain you’ve worked him up so much he hasn’t got the control left to give you time to adjust.
But Frankie always has a way of surprising you.  You’re tensed up, expecting force and speed and instead he pulls you down slow; taking you at a crawl when you expected a sprint, and all you can do is scratch your fingers across his scalp and whine as he fills you up, sweet and hot like honeyed brandy.  He shudders so hard the springs in the seat creak as you slip down another inch, and another, clenching and fluttering around him as he buries himself inside you with a groan so deep it’s nearly a sob.
“Yes, baby,” he mutters, words returning to him in a slow trickle.  He drops his forehead against your chest, his breath lovely and hot on the thin skin between your breasts as he tugs the neckline of your dress down to leave a kiss there.  “Fuck yes. You take me so good.  Keep going.”  His fingers bite into your thigh as you sink down a little more.  “Don’t-don’t stop, baby.  I need to fuck you.  I need to.  Don’t stop.”
His body thrums underneath you as you sink down, every muscle trembling like high-strung wire, ready to snap.  He’s trying so very very hard to hold on long enough to let you open for him, to be ready for him to give you what he wants.  The realization leaves you dizzy, your grip tightening around his shoulders and he lets out a choked moan as you settle fully in his lap and all but gush around his cock.
You’ve got bare seconds before his patience gives out, but you settle your hands on his chest, feeling the race of his heartbeat under the well-worn cotton of his t-shirt, and push yourself just far enough away that you can look down at him properly.  God, you want to move.  You need to move.  Every time with Frankie holds the same sense of shuttered awe, like you forget what it’s like to be this full until he’s inside you again, pressing up against nerves you barely knew you had.
It’s dark now, the streetlights barely reaching into the shaded alley, and Frankie’s face is painted only in shades of blues and blacks.  But even in the darkness you can see that awe-struck look on his face: lips parted, eyes wide and impossibly dark.  The first thing you think rolls straight off your tongue without a second to parse it: “You’re so beautiful, baby.”
And Frankie breaks.
He grits out a sound that’s half a snarl and half a whimper and lunges up into you so hard you have to brace yourself against the roof of the cab to keep from hitting your head.  Without even meaning to you cry out, the air forced out of you in a broken staccato as Frankie plants his feet on the baseboard and fucks up into you so hard you swear you feel the jolt of it lance up brightly through your ribcage.  It’s unrelenting, frantic and primal and fucking overwhelming.  All you can do is wrap your arms tight around his shoulders and hang on, let him take what he needs, letting him give you everything he can.
Frankie’s beyond words.  Teeth bared against your throat, arms locked tight around you.  One of his hands is hooked around your shoulder, the other gripping mercilessly at your ass.  Even as wet as you are you still grip him tight, especially at this angle, and it’s nearly a struggle for him to move, to drag himself out of you and bury himself all over again.
You want to encourage him.  Want to praise him.  God knows he’s earned it, but every nerve in your body is on fire and you can’t even find the air to breathe, let alone speak.  You manage a sharp, keening whine as he shifts under you, just barely grazing your g-spot.  Every nerve sparks like raw metal on flint and without even meaning to you clamp down on him tight, your body taking the initiative and trying to hold him against that spot, to chase that burn.
Snarling, Frankie shoves you back, your shoulders thudding against the steering wheel.  The change in angle is sudden and shocking and oh god it puts him right where you wanted him, driving up relentlessly against your sweet spot.  It’s brutal and blissful and fucking perfect, and when he shoves his hand under your dress and drags his thumb in shaking circles over your swollen clit it’s even better.  It’s fucking heaven, and you’ve got no idea how much more of it you can take.  Your whole body shakes, unmindful of any direction you might give it.  Your hand strikes out blindly, knocking hard against the solid plane of his chest and grabbing a fistful of his t-shirt.
“Please, baby,” he groans through gritted teeth, and you have just enough senses left to hear just how close he is to coming, and how desperate he is to get you there, too.  “C’mon.  Come for me.  Please.”
“F-f-frankie.”  So close.  Each thrust, each stroke of his fingers pushes you a little closer to your peak, all other sensations fading out and making room for the overload.  You’re not sure if you could see anything even if it was broad daylight right now, but goddamn it you wish you could see his face...
The last thing you hear is Frankie’s shaking voice pleading with you: “Please baby.”  And then there’s just a ringing, high and tuneless.  You have the barest second to wonder if you’ve truly gone deaf and then, like the sheer enormity of it was too much for your brain to process at once, then you come.  Every muscle contracts and you seize up, shuddering, all control over your body lost.  Your throat burns, and it isn’t until Frankie’s hand clamps down over your mouth to quiet you that you understand why.
His heel pounds the floor and he thrusts up into you once more, lifting you up as he goes rigid, under you and inside you, his arms locking tight around your body.  He comes with a broken sob, his face buried against your neck as he quakes his way through the spasms.
The ringing fades, and you listen to the sound your mingled breathing, harsh and labored.  You tighten your grip on him, curl one arm around his head so you can brush his hair back - god, when had he lost his hat in all this? - and press a long kiss to his damp forehead.
Your throat’s a wreck, your voice rough and uneven when you finally find it again.
“Good boy,” you murmur.
“Love you, baby,” he says hoarsely, the words stifled against your skin.  “Jesus Christ I fucking love you.”
“Love you too, Francisco.”
He laughs, breathless and utterly come-drunk.  “Fuck, we need to get out of here.  Somebody definitely heard that.”
You stroke your fingers through his hair, too pleasantly fuzzed to care overmuch about that.  “Hm.  I’m gonna make a mess of the seat,” you complain drowsily, already feeling him begin to trickle out of you as his cock softens.
“‘S okay, baby,” he says, the scratch of his stubble oddly soothing as he kisses his way up your neck. “As soon as we get home I promise I’ll clean you up.”
His tongue traces a shockingly warm line up to the corner of your jaw, and your legs tremble at the suggestion.
“Very good boy,” you amend.

(Lemon!Modern!AU) Levi x Reader- Dirty Talking - Revenge
Tumblr media
Your hands tingled a little, itching slightly at the tip of your fingers. You felt nervous. Unconsciously you pulled down your dress. Perhaps this hadn't been your greatest idea. Levi would be so angry if he ever found out. The tingling moved to the base of your stomach. Half of you wanted him to see you and half of you wanted him to never know about your outing. Fucking butterflies. They were fluttering your stomach to Sweden. It wasn't that bad. It was just a stupid dress after all. And it hadn't entirely been your idea. More like 20% you and 80% Hanji. Yeah, it was all Hanji's fault. "This dress is perhaps a little too short", you thought when even tugging it wouldn't let it pass your midthigh. You inhaled deeply trying to sedate your somersaulting guts. Levi couldn't kill his future wife, could he?
You closed your eyes releasing the stupid animals in your stomach as you exhaled. Even you, who enjoyed dressing provocatively, had to admit that this was pushing it a little over the line. But it wasn't like Levi didn't deserve it. It had been a week since your engagement. Well, secret, engagement. No one really knew he had proposed. People didn't even know you were dating. At this point, however, wasn't it too much to keep hiding it from people? You were getting married!
You understood him, for the most part. He was a very private person and didn't like people meddling in his business. You were sure that he wouldn't have even told Hanji, Erd or Erwin about you two dating if they hadn't found out accidentally. You felt a faint blush colour your cheeks. Now that was a story for another day. Today was about showing up Levi. It wasn't like you hadn't brought up just coming clean, to which he had responded, "How is that any of their business?". Maybe this would give him a reason. He knew you had the dress and what better occasion to use it for clubbing?
"You okay?", Petra asked noticing your blush. You blushed deeper realising you had been caught mid-thought. "Yeah!", you answered a tad too fast, which in turn made one of her eyebrows hiked upward in amusement. She laughed teasingly. Currently, you were in a taxi, a girl taxi, with Petra and Hanji. The office had organised a night out at the new restaurant; Sina. It was like an unofficial office outing. Most of you were friends and would hang out after hours, so it wasn't so out of character to finally go on a night out together.
Of course, Levi knew about it. He had also been invited too. But you knew from the moment they had invited you that he would not go. And perhaps it had been a lucky break, for you, that he actually had dinner with a client and Erwin. He could be a grandpa at times, always opting to stay home in what he referred to as "peace and some fucking quiet". You, on the other hand, loved going out. You had loved bar hopping, dancing on tabletops and in general, just liked partying. The last time you had gone out partying had been when you met Levi. So almost a year and a half ago. You needed a good night out and Sina was the perfect place to just let go. It was a new-ish restaurant that became a club after 11.
"Who are you blushing for?", Petra insisted poking your cheek playfully. This made Hanji turn to look at both of you smirking, an evil smirk. "Yeah, who's got you so hot and bothered?", Hanji questioned. Evil, that woman was evil. "I'm not hot and bothered!", you defended blushing heatedly. Hanji knew a story or two about your misadventures with Levi. "Evvvvvil", you thought. "That's not what your cheeks are saying", Hanji added her smirk widening. This made your hands shoot up to your face to cover your burning cheeks. "Who is it?", Petra asked adding wood to the fire. Hanji giggled in satisfaction. She loved putting you in an awkward position. She knew you and Levi weren't public and she loved making both of you try to find a way out of people's stupid meddling. Well, it was mostly you, no one really questioned Levi. They wouldn't be there long enough to do so.
"No one!", you insisted still covering your cheeks. "Liesss", Hanji said tauntingly. "Haji do you know something I don't?", Petra asked pouting, turning to look at Hanji. Hanji smiled an evil, wicked smile. All you could do was shake your head furiously, which only made her smile grow. "Maybe", she said giggling. Petra scowled and turn to look at you, "Why are you keeping secrets?", she asked poignantly looking at you, "Is it someone from the office?". You were screwed, oh so very screwed. It was one thing to deflect questions, lying was an entirely different story.
"We're here", The cab driver called out and sure enough, the restaurant was but a few metres away from where he was parking. Before they could say anything else, you quickly opened the car door and stepped out. "In a rush?", Hanji called out still inside the cab. "Suspicious", Petra added getting out of the cab. "Guys!", you moaned a little tired of the interrogation. "Relax, we'll stop teasing you", Petra said smiling and pushing playfully your shoulder. "Yeah yeah, for now anyway", Hanji corrected making Petra chuckle. They both walked ahead of you making their way to the bouncer at the entrance of the restaurant.
You exhaled, loudly, at that. Sometimes you could make yourself such an easy target. "Wait guys!", you called out trotting in your 5-inch heels. Man, you were so out of practice. You used to be able to wear heels hours on end. The two women simply giggled as you reached them. "Reservation for Ackerman", Hanji said to the bouncer.
You could feel your blood drain.
Did she just say, Ackerman?
Fuck.
The bouncer knocked on the door. A girl appeared with a tablet in hand. She greeted your group. "For Ackerman", Hanji repeated. "Fuck, fuck, fuck", you thought. Stupid, evil Hanji. "Is the captain coming?", you whispered very nervously to Petra. She looked at you deviously, "And if he was?", she asked in a curious tone. "I didn't know", you said trying to appease her curiosity. "Aha", she responded still looking at your suspiciously. "So, is he coming?", you asked again looking away. Petra smirked, "No, he just made the reservation", she finally answered, "Don't worry, we've all been there", she added placing a hand on your shoulder. What did that mean?
"Ah yes, there are already a few people waiting for you already", the hostess said, the bounder opened the door so that the three of you could follow her. You. Mindlessly followed behind Petra. What did she mean by they have all been there? Levi had told you he had dated here and there but never from the office. Did she mean he had just done it with them? Nothing official? How many people from the office had he slept with? You worked with these people every day! Was this why he didn't want to disclose your relationship?
You felt dizzy.
"Here you go", the hostess said showing you to the large booth-like table. The rest of Levi's team and Erd were already sitting with a couple of empty glasses on the table. "You made it", Erd called out seeing Hanji next to the hostess. "About time", Aurou added, trying and to a certain degree succeeding in imitating Levi. "Don't look at me, we had to wait for this firecracker", Haji said pulling you to the front. You unconsciously tugged again at your dress whilst looking down a little embarrassed. Someone at the table cleared their throat. "We-well it's fine, you're here now", Erd added. You could feel a slight blush coating your face. Stupid four eyes. Hanji laughed, "It takes time to look like she does", she said scooting inside the booth. "H-Hey!", you protested sitting next to her. "You do look nice", Eren remarked kindly from his seat. "Eren you're barking at the wrong tree", Hanji commented still chuckling making Eren blush. "That's not how I meant it!", He opposed. "Sure", Hanji said dismissively, "We're ordering tequila", she said enthusiastically finally changing the topic. "Hell yeah!", Erd joined finishing whatever drink he had been sipping.
After the little scuffle, the night had continued more casually. You had caught a few of the guys stealing a glance or two your way, which was innocent enough. You were still circling what Petra had said earlier. We have all been there. And to that tune, you had were on shot number 9. At least dinner had been amazing. It was a course type dinner, and for every course, you better believe that you had at least two shots. After the first 5 shots, you felt your embarrassment melt away and you felt a lot more relaxed. By shot 7 you actually started to enjoy yourself.
"We should dance", You suggested, you felt as if you were brimming with confidence. "I like this (y/n)", Erd added, passing you the bit of tequila that was left. You didn't bother pouring it, you grabbed the bottle and finished the bit that was still left in the bottle. "Woooooo", Hanji cheered. Petra and Jinn simply laughed at the antiques of the table. "Oi Waiter, bring the third one!", Hanji shouted. The waiter winked at her. This was the second tequila bottle the group had finished. Everyone was pretty tipsy and at this point, it felt as if you'd known these people for all your life.
It was by now after 11, the staff had moved the centre tables to reveal a light floor that would change from red to blue lights. The lights had been dimmed down and the music became louder.
"We're taking the bottle to the dance floor", Hanji announced when the waiter arrived with a freshly chilled tequila bottle. "YES!", Petra said surprising everyone. "You guys go ahead", Jinn said excusing himself. "You guys are no fun, common Petra, (y/n)", Hanji said half pouting. Aurou simply stared in disapproval.
Petra ushed you out of the table. You had missed this. You had missed fun drunk you. Your best nights had been like this one. "Stupid Levi", you thought. Why couldn't he be more fun? You doubt he would be here dancing with you. If you had somehow convinced him to come, he would have stayed behind at the table and then force you to leave early. Not today though. Today you were going to have a lot of fun. After all, he had had his share of fun with apparently everyone in the office. "Stupid Levi", you thought again., "Screw him".
You smirked and ran after Petra in your 5-inch black heels. ''Yes, screw him'", you reassured yourself. As you reached the dance floor, the lights neon lights became stronger, blinding you for a moment as you stepped into the lited floor. The liquor was really getting to you now. Suddenly, the image became more or less clearer, well clear enough for you, to distinguish a massive crowd of people dancing to the pounding music, which seemed to be coming from the ceiling. The three of you started dancing, simply feeling the music.
"Wow, I didn't know you could move like that", Petra half screamed passing you the bottle. "My parents made me take gymnastic classes", You said winking going down to the floor bouncing your ass tilting the bottle down to your mouth.
"Is that so?", a masculine voice asked from behind you.
You froze.
No.
No fucking way.
"Captain", Petra said coving her mouth.
Fuck.
You turned to look at him still down on the floor. He was pissed. His arms were crossed and he looked as if a vein would pop in his neck. "Levi", you breathed out, your eyes wide as plates. His nose flared up. "If you're done giving a show to the whole place, get up", he ordered gritting his teeth. You stared up at him still frozen in place. He glared down at you, "Are you waiting for me to pick you up or what", he was angry. So very angry.
You shot right up. That was a bad idea. Your dress had hiked up dangerously high. Levi's eyes scanned you, narrowing, even more, every inch he met. If he was angry before, he was furious now. You followed his eyes and finally noticed the dark material too high for comfort. Too obviously you pulled down your dress, which wasn't much of change. This just made him deepen his frown. "Erwin! Hi!", Hanji waved to the man behind your fiancé. Levi took this chance to grab your arm and whisper in your ear, "What the hell are you wearing?", You felt his grip tightened on your arm. You swallowed air.
Wait.
Why were you nervous. You had done nothing wrong. He was the one who didn't like going out. He was the one who had done half the office. He was the one who wanted to hide you.
"A sexy ass dress", you answered a little too loud. "Uuuuu", Hanji commented having had caught your reply. Petra was still greeting half drunkenly Erwin. "She looks hot, doesn't she?", Hanji added squeezing your right boob. You chuckled with Hanji but Levi... Levi wanted to cut Hanji's hand clean off. His grip tightened even further. "She's a real price", Hanji continued, "I mean you should see how many guys I've had to fend off". This made you giggle even more until, "Ouch!", you said trying to free your wrist from his grip. "Calm down midget, we've behaved", Hanji defended. "Zoe, come here", Erwin called looking at Levi sizzle in anger. "Show me to the table", He half commanded. "Sure thing!", she sloppily started marching back to the table.
"Is this your big idea of a 'night out' ", Levi gritted his teeth. It was your turn to glare at him. "I haven't done anything wrong", you hissed back. His jaw clenched, his nose flaring up again, "So you wouldn't mind if I danced with other women?", he taunted. You look impassive, your face challenging him, "Not like you haven't done half the office".
Red, that's all you could see.
"What?", he asked confusion all over his face. "I know all about it", you continued crossing your arms. This only pushed your breasts upwards, half of them already spilling out of your dress. "You're drunk, we're leaving", he stated leaning forward in an attempt to grab your arm again. "No", you said moving backwards, "Petra said 'We've all been there ". He looked puzzled. "We're leaving", he insisting attempting once more to grab your arm. "No, I'm not leaving", you said moving back again, "I want to stay". He sighed exasperated, "You're talking nonsense, and you're about to trip and fall on those heels", he tried to reason. "Is that all you can say?", you asked angrily. "What else do you want me to say? That you look like a prostitute?", he answered equally as angry. "I do not!", you said placing your arms on your hips. Levi's hand shot up to your chest. "You idiot!", he shouted, pushing down your breast. You blushed, hard. You had garnered some attention from onlookers, and he was basically groping you. He looked around glaring at every man that looked your way, you swear you could hear him growl.
"Levi", you called out, still blushing. "What!", he barked reaching his patience limit. "You're groping me", you said shyly. He looked down at his hand. "So?", he said closing the distance between you two. "People are staring", you said quietly. "I know", he said squeezing your breast harder. You moaned. You could feel your body becoming hotter. You could feel his body nearing you until he was next to your ear. "Did you want to provoke me?", he asked and then he bit you. He bit you. You blushed even more. His teeth played with your earlobe. "You gave every man here a show", he continued breathing shallowly against your ear, "I'll have to correct that", he growled into your ear. Your heart was pumping twice as fast, your hands were sweating and your lips... Your felt as if your lips were on fire. "I'm going to fuck you so hard that you won't ever forget who you belong to", he whispered in a low tone, his hand giving another squeeze to your already abused breast. "You know what I want to do?", he continued whispering, his free hand cupping your ass, "I want to fuck you in front of all these people", his fingers dug into the fabric, "Do you think I'm joking?", he asked rhetorically his hand going underneath your dress caressing the back of your thigh. You took a sharp inhale. "He wouldn't", you thought. "I'm going to fuck you with my fingers", he announced, his hand reaching your ass. "Levi! No!", you pleaded feeling his fingers move your underwear to the side, exposing you. "You think you can go out in this dress and I won't punish you?", he said rather severely. You moaned when you felt his middle finger enter you. He smirked. "Levi please", you begged when you felt him slowing down. "You were the one who didn't want to leave", he replied pushing a second finger in.
"Captain! (y/n)!", a female voice called out. It was Petra and behind her Eren, Aurou and Jinn. Levi turned to look at them his eyes narrowing. "Fuck that", he growled in your ear. He took his fingers out of you, earning a whine from you. He grabbed your hand and started making his way opposite your friends. "I could have sworn they were around here somewhere", You could hear Petra say.
Once Levi felt you were far enough, he pushed you against a dark corner, harshly. His right leg was between yours; his chest was crushing yours. You felt as if your legs would give out. You wanted him. You wanted him now. "Lev-", you started but he put a finger up to your lips. "Who said you could speak?", he warned, anger still lingering in his voice. You swallowed nothing. "When I said I would fuck you in public I meant it", he said lifting your dress enough for his hand to find you again. You bit your lip feeling his fingers inside you once again. This man was going to be the death of you. You moaned quietly with every touch. "Was this your plan?", he asked between pants. Your face was resting on his shoulder. "You wanted me to fuck you?", he continued. You locked your arms around his neck for support, something was building up inside of you, and he and you knew exactly what it was. "Tell me you want me inside you", he ordered. You bit down his shoulder trying to stifle a loud moan. "Say it", he insisted. You couldn't even speak, you wanted to just melt in his hand. "I'll stop if you don't obey", he warned. "Ahh ahh", you moaned in his neck, no longer caring if someone heard you or not. "Say it!", he commanded. "I, I want, you, you inside, me!", you screamed. He smirked, pushing one last time his fingers.
You felt undone.
You came coating his fingers and hand. He smirked, creating a small space between the both of you. "Good girl", he whispered helping you up.
"Captain!", a male voice called out for Levi. It was Jinn. "Yes?", Levi casually asked as his subordinate reached you. "Is everything alright? We've been looking for you and (y/n)", he said a little concerned. Levi used his head to point at you, still holding yourself against the wall. "I've been taking care of this one, she's drunk", he said half glaring at you. But at this point, you didn't care. You had came so hard you didn't think you could walk.
"I don't think she can walk", Levi said. "I'll carry her", Jinn offered taking a step in your direction. "It's alright. I'll take care of her", Levi said using his leg to stop Jinn. "Are you sure Captain?", Jinn asked probably not wanting to burden Levi. Levi nodded in reassurance, "Yeah, I'll make sure she is well taken care of, trust me", he said looking down at you.
Oh, you were in for a long night.

Ectoberhaunt Day 5: Witching hour vs Twilight
Fandom: Danny Phantom
Rating: G
Characters: Danny Fenton, Kitty, Johnny 13
Tags: Witching hour, ghost culture?
Danny keeps waking up in the middle of the night. The same exact time every night. He decides to take a flight around town and runs into a couple ghosts who're willing to give him some answers.
Read on AO3 here.
Danny’s eyes opened. It was night. Above him, the stars on his ceiling gave off a dim glow. He was still wrapped in his blanket. There was no cold ache in his throat that would indicate his ghost sense had woken him up.
He glanced at his alarm clock. The red numbers read 3:00. Danny grumbled and turned on his side, away from the clock, and tried to go back to sleep. This was the third night this had happened. For the last two nights he’d woken up at exactly three in the morning for no reason. He’d tossed and turned in bed until around four.
This night apparently wasn’t much different. He laid in bed for about ten minutes, but his brain just kept going back to worries about the next day. It wasn’t restful at all. Danny sat up and wiped the sleep from his eyes. If he was going to be awake for a while, he should at least do something useful.
In a flash of light Danny transformed. He flew through the wall into the chilly night air. He could feel the cold against his face, but it didn’t bother him like it would a normal human. There was no moon tonight - it had set before nightfall - but he could see perfectly well. Danny decided to head towards the city park. The night was fairly quiet. There were some cars on the roads, but not very many. Just a few night shift workers and late night travelers.
His ghost sense went off when he was halfway to the park. It felt familiar: kind of spiky but not painful or aggressive. Danny was slowly getting better at identifying ghosts based on how his ghost sense felt, but it was more of an art than a science. He had no idea who this could be. Who would be out at the park in the middle of the night and not causing havoc?
The sound reached him before he saw who it was. A motorcycle revved its engines, and someone shrieked in joy. It had to be Johnny, Shadow, and Kitty. Danny landed near the park fountain. They didn’t seem to be causing much trouble aside from being loud. He sat on the edge of the fountain and waited for them to come around again. It wasn’t long before Johnny’s ghostly bike flew in from the opposite area from where they’d left. As expected, Kitty was hugging Johnny as he did some spins that would have been dangerous if they’d still been alive. They rose up on the front wheel of the bike and spun three times before landing again. Then Johnny pulled into an empty parking spot in front of the fountain.
“Hey, kid,” Johnny called. “Surprised it took you so long to come out.”
Danny shrugged. “Didn’t seem like you were really causing trouble tonight.”
Behind Johnny, Kitty giggled. “You mean the last three nights?” she asked.
That got his attention. Danny floated up into a standing position, though his feet didn’t touch the ground. “What do you mean?” he asked. “What’ve you been doing?”
“Chill out, kid,” Johnny said. He got off his bike and offered his hand to Kitty. She grabbed it and jumped down from the bike. “We’ve just been riding around. Witching hour season, you know how it is."
Danny didn’t know exactly what Johnny meant, but he had a feeling it had to do with why he kept waking up. “I keep waking up at three,” he admitted, settling down to stand on the ground. “What’s that about?”
“How long’ve you been a ghost?” Kitty asked. “Or, whatever you are.”
Danny’s eyes flashed. “A little over a year.”
Kitty put a finger up to her chin. “And you didn’t notice last year? That’s a little weird, with how strong you are.”
“You guys kept me up almost every night for three months straight last year,” Danny grumbled. He was still a little bitter about that. It had ruined his grades. Now that he’d cemented his ownership of Amity Park, ghosts didn’t try to challenge him as much, but it had been a really awful for a while.
“Oh, right.” Kitty at least had the manners to look embarrassed. “Well, this time of night is when we’re more… present, I guess?” She looked at Johnny for confirmation, but he just shrugged. Kitty frowned and looked back at Danny. “The closer we get to Halloween, the more it affects us. I can be out of the Zone a little bit longer, Johnny and Shadow can ride faster, that sort of thing.”
On the one hand, Danny was glad to get some kind of answer for why he kept waking up. On the other… “So I’m gonna wake up in the middle of the night for no reason for a month?”
“Two months,” Johnny corrected. “Sorry, Phantom. It doesn’t just stop on November first.”
Danny sagged. He wiped a hand across his face in frustration. “Great. Thanks for telling me. I guess I could… get homework done,” he said weakly. It sounded like the worst possible thing to do in the middle of the night.
Johnny and Kitty stared at him and then burst out laughing. Danny glared until they quieted down enough to talk.
“Oh, Ancients, you’re such a goody-two-shoes,” Johnny snorted. “That’s awful. No, kid, this is ghost time. You can’t do lame shit like homework.”
“What do you want to do?” Kitty asked. “Really? Do you wanna do homework, or… I dunno, fight people? What do you even do when you’re having fun as a ghost?”
Danny frowned. “I don’t have fun as a ghost.” He gestured to his glowing, jumpsuit-clad form. “I’m only like this when I have to fight ghosts.”
The ghosts shared a glance before looking back at Danny. “That’s really sad, kid,” Kitty said. She brushed a lock of hair back behind her ear. “Do you even know what you’re like as a ghost?”
He blinked at her. “I mean… I’m me? I’m more, uh. Protective of stuff.” He blushed green and looked away. He didn’t really like thinking about all the weird ghost instincts that had popped up over the last year. It made him worry about being less human.
Johnny snorted. “No shit. You spent the last year beating the crap out of anyone who laid a foot in your territory.” Kitty elbowed him in the gut.
“Come on, Johnny, he was just a mote. We weren’t too chill for a few years, either.”
“Ow! Babe, we weren’t… you know!” Johnny waved at Danny, indicating his whole self. Danny raised an eyebrow.
“You did kind of try to take over my sister’s body and then possessed one of my classmates,” he reminded her.
Kitty rolled her eyes. “Yeah, but that was before I knew you were just a kid. Like, really a kid. Most ghosts don’t get near as strong as you in their first year, you know. We both thought you were super old but just acted like you were a kid.”
“Even though my human form looks just like me?” Danny asked, crossing his arms.
“Yeah?” Kitty said with a shrug. “Look, the only other one like you we’d heard about was the old guy. He’s been the same age for like, fifteen years or whatever. Why would we think you were any different?”
A lot of questions crossed Danny’s mind. Did that mean Vlad stopped aging? He knew the fruitloop looked weirdly young, even though he had grey hair, but he figured that was botox or something. Did that mean Danny was going to stop aging in a couple years? He was pretty sure he had grown some in the last year, but what if-
No, he had immediate things to deal with. These two probably didn’t know any of the answers to those questions.
“Okay, so, let me get this straight,” Danny said, “Witching hour is for doing ghost stuff. And I’m supposed to figure out what I like to do as a ghost, so I can do it for a couple months.”
“I guess?” Johnny said with a frown. “Not like we had to figure that out.”
Danny picked up his feet so he was hovering a couple feet above the ground in a seated position, one leg dangling and the other hiked up so his knee was in front of his torso. “I guess I like flying? It’s pretty nice. I can go over a hundred miles an hour.”
“Yeah, we can tell,” Kitty said, a hint of a laugh in her voice. She picked up her legs too so she hovered in a cross-legged position in front of him. “That’s not really a you thing, though, is it? Most ghosts like flying.”
“I still prefer the bike,” Johnny said.
“Objection noted, sweet heart,” Kitty teased. “You like protecting the town, right? Maybe you should fly around to make sure it’s okay?”
It wasn’t a bad idea, but something about it felt sour. “I do that all evening anyway,” Danny grumbled. “It’s not like I hate it, I just… It’s not fun.”
Kitty hummed. Danny was very glad she didn’t poke at that. Fighting ghosts could be fun sometimes, but mostly it was something he felt driven to do. He didn’t enjoy it like he would playing a game, or watching a meteor shower, or…
His eyes lit up. “There’s two meteor showers this month,” he said, remembering it suddenly. “The Draconids are in just a couple of days, and then the Orionids near the end of the month.”
“That’s like shooting stars, right?” Kitty asked.
“Exactly. It's rocks from space burning up in the atmosphere,” Danny said, a smile spreading across his face. Why hadn’t he thought about this before? He could get up above the clouds, away from the light pollution. “I bet I could get the best view in town now.”
“Of course he’s a nerd,” Johnny grumbled. Kitty shushed him.
“That sounds like a great thing to enjoy,” Kitty said to Danny. “Wanna ride with us one day and get out of town? Away from the lights?”
Danny hesitated. “You’d be okay with that?” He glanced from her to Johnny. Kitty seemed friendly enough when they weren’t fighting, but Johnny was the one who drove the bike.
Johnny frowned for a moment. He looked back at his bike. Danny could practically see the gears turning in his head. Finally Johnny turned back to Danny and said, “If it gets us out of this dump, yeah, we’ll take you stargazing.”
Before he knew what he was doing, Danny was hugging Johnny. “Holy shit thank you I haven’t gone in years I won’t let you regret it.”
After a few moments had passed, Johnny gently put his hand on Danny’s shoulder. “H-hey, it’s no big deal, kid.”
Far in the distance, a church bell rang.
“Well, that’s our cue,” Kitty said. “Same time tomorrow?”
Danny straightened up, a little embarrassed that he’d just hugged Johnny of all people. “Yeah. See you then.”
When he made it back to his bed, he fell asleep instantly.

A Cure for Insomnia CH.2
Getting back to your little one story cottage, you can only manage to rush in and run about in a mad dash as you try to accomplish getting ready for work and getting something to eat. Running through choices in your head as you change and freshen up, nothing sounds good. There's not much time since your shift starts at nine and to make it to the store you need to leave by eight twenty. You got home at eight fifteen, and while Nate, your manager, has never seemed to give a fuck what you did at work you're still in your probationary period and would like to keep the easiest job you've ever had.
It's a really simple gig, seeing as the store you work at is actually a front for some illegal activity. The variety of crime you aren't sure of, but you are aware there's no way you guys do no business and yet they can afford to pay thirty dollars an hour. Thankfully just keeping your mouth shut and being nice to little Jo, the owner's daughter, is enough to keep you in the cushiest job in the world. The store's front is a regular old book store, all the books are real, the registers work, you're able to sell books and you've run to the bank to do the weekly deposits twice for Book & Nook. The front is very legitimate or it would be if the amount of customers ever equaled the sales made.
Again you don't ask questions, because for thirty dollars an hour you get to goof off for a couple hours a day, plus you get a bonus when you watch little Jo at the shop. She's a real sweet eleven year old, she's got tourettes and took a shine to you the first time she saw you tic. While you both might not suffer the same disorder she finds the common ground nice, like it's not just her. It's not even hard to watch her or enjoy her company, she'll come bouncing in with her excited chittering and hands clapping spilling all the latest gossip that comes with being in middle school. And boy is there a lot of gossip.
It's really nice seeing that Jo has friends at school and is even considered a “popular” kid. You remember how tough school was because no one understood you and teachers never cared enough about your personality to bring up the fact that it was clear to most faculty members that you had Autism. You excelled academically so what did it matter if you got picked on for oversharing information or for finishing assignments the minute they were handed to you. As bittersweet as the parallels are you're so glad Jo doesn't have to go through that. Never would have thought a southern school could be so accepting, much less a middle school at that.
Tearing through the kitchen you honestly can't find anything that you want to eat right now. And even after a long night of hiking/dissociating you don't think you're that peckish at all. Figuring it's best to at least take something to quell any future nausea you grab a Pedialyte Pop from the freezer. As fast as you entered your home you left, and not before ensuring twice that the door was locked and secured. While living on the outskirts of town saves you from many potential robberies, and worse salesmen, there's still the chance of some lunatic with an ax hiding out in a closet to murder you. Better safe now than sorry later.
Pulling into park behind the shop right at nine is a blessing. You run into the shop to clock in blurting out a quick 'Morning' to Nate, who was carrying a particularly large box, as you passed by him. In a flash you were back at your car retrieving your newly prized deer skull. Lungs burning a bit from the all out sprint you just did you took a little extra time to close the trunk and lock your car up to catch your breath, and avoid any light headiness you might get from the empty stomach workout. Eager to share the wonders of death with your best work friends, and by that you mean Nate your manager...and only other coworker, you rush back into the building.
The shop was quiet as usual as you made your way through the door though you were in the back room where only employees could roam you had the slightest suspicion that the front of shop was just the same. It's there you find Nate, now lugging a medium sized box around to a side table. He did this a lot you suspect some type of smuggling but hey plausible deniability and all those legal matters. The taller dark haired man sees you and just as he's about to wave you over, notices your prize with a raised brow.
“The fuck d'you bring in the store?” he doesn't seem amused by whatever it is he thinks you're up to. “Deer skull.” Lifting it up in one hand and pointing at it, “Found this guy on my hike last night...or rather this morning actually.”
“YN, we talked about this, you said you'd get some sleep last night. No adventures remember.” he's only two years older than you and yet he acts as if he's ten years. He must be an old soul, or enjoys the role of care giver...or you're making him go gray prematurely, anything's possible.
“Eh, I remember saying I'd 'try' and get sleep.” for someone who's body is running on fumes your cheekiness is astronomical, “operative word being 'try', remember.”
It's a long silence as Nate decides if he wants to deal with your bullshit at this moment. After a minute or so he concedes leaning back on the table behind him. “Let's hear it.” and you perk up immediately.
“Cool, so I was walking along the tree line and spotted him, tried to find more but seems there's only one piece. Judging by the size of his antlers I'd say he was nearly fully grown. Now my plan is to do whatever treatments taxidermists do to bones and,” you continue to word vomit at the tired twenty-six year old in front of you, about the joys and wonders of taxidermy and the likely hood of ever finding a skull so nicely preserved.
“I can do that in here right?” even though it's been phrased as a question, you aren't asking permission, you're just being polite and letting Nate know the storage room will house your creepy deer skull antics for today...maybe the week you need to find a taxidermist book to figure out what you need to do.
Nate gives up and leaves with his box of new books to let you have full run of the back to do your weird vulture culture shit. He figures he's just too old to understand the new obsessions with the macabre. He hopes his cousin won't take to shit like this, the kid's weird enough as it is, no need to put another target on her back. Nate sets off to take down the Harry Potter sets in favor of this new comic series little Jo wanted.
Already taking his silence as the go ahead you place your found skull on the table and rush off into the store front to find a book on taxidermy and hopefully more specifically about bones. The set up and organization of the store reminds you a lot of the scene in Brendan Fraser's The Mummy 1997 where Evie is on the ladder and somehow causes all the book shelves to fall like dominoes. So unsafe, yet all book stores and libraries seem to have this set up. With the tall shelves it makes it difficult to accurately get a read on the spines. You don't even know what section taxidermy actually falls under, education maybe?
“Nate, where do you think a book on taxidermy would be?” you called out as you passed by him.
“...hobby?” that didn't sound right but you'd give it a shot anyway.
This should be fun, the hobby section was so disorganized and it took up nearly half the store too, Book & Nook had everything from fishing, to crochet, cooking, the art of film making, hell even had a cryptid hunting book a book that you may have to look into a bit later. You closed your eyes and let your intuition guide you, when you looked up you saw a thin black...vine, no whisp? It undulates in less than rhythmic movements nearly like a snake but it has no head, and not unlike a tentacle but without suckers. It's another hallucination so you were keen to ignore it until it stretched past your head, giving you an added auditory hallucination where you swore you could hear wind rushing past your ears, it swirled around you until it flew to the shelf and tapped on a book. Cautiously you walked over to it, it's never good to play into these delusions. Once you got close enough the black shape was gone but on the shelf was a creme colored paper back titled “Manual of Taxidermy: Complete Guide of Preserving Birds and Mammals.”
Walking to Nate with the book in your hands you asked him to read it and make sure you weren't having an episode and making everything up right now. You'd have to try harder to go to sleep tonight if that were the case.
“Oh you found your book huh?” he said looking down at the title.
Well this is getting weird fast, but you nod nonetheless. Might as well thank the weird hallucination gift right. Leaving him to do whatever it is he plans on doing the rest of the day, you go to the back. And just as the book instructs you set to cleaning the skull by setting it in some water and changing it as many times as the water runs murky. The book is quiet helpful to a beginner like yourself but it does seem a bit outdated from the bits of information you know from taxidermists blogs and vulture culture posts on the internet. Reading it in between water changes is a great way to pass the time though, not like you guys get any real customers anyways.
The bell rings as the front door opens and closes alerting you to someone's arrival on your third water change. Needing a little bit of mental stimulation you walk out into the front where Big Jo and Little Jo are talking to Nate. Little Jo sees you and skitters away from her father to rush you, she stops about a foot away and holds her arms wide open. She's a hugger but upon meeting you had never even thought people could be touch adverse so keeping in mind that you might not want to be touched she's learned to invite you into hugs and it's your choice to allow it or not. Placing a hand on your bicep you give a squeeze, checking your tolerance you find the thought bearable. Placing your arms outstretched at your sides Jo rushes your torso for her hug.
After she nearly body slammed you into the wall, and  let her death grip go she was off on a tangent about so many things. Her excited rapid blinking tic, one she developed after meeting you, triggering your own.
“Ok so you remember how last week I told you that Jessie Kinsleton said that Micheal Saleisa told Gigi B, not Gigi S. that Meghan,” you had no clue the lives of eleven year olds had gotten so complex, from the gossip you heard from Jo it seemed that the school's sixth graders were plotting for a war with an ice cream parlor up the street. No clue why, maybe just to fuck the system, kids are weird, preteens are weirder...and angry.
But you nod to Jo listening to her every word, and trying to calm your eyelids so you could actually open your eyes. After being told the sequence of events that would happen in the Tween Armageddon, something to do with Marco Salvator ordering three dozen donuts and a flock of geese, your eyes finally gained their ability to see back. Black whisps, much like the one from earlier, wandered all around your vision, it looked like a  dark smoke had settled eye level within the shop and was snaking through the isles.
Catching the movement of your eyes Jo looked around the shop too. Seeing nothing she turned back to you concerned, “Hey it's okay, nothin's there.”
Hearing the drop in volume of the normally chatty tween, Big Jo and Nate pause their conversation to turn their attention to you and follow you're gaze.
“Kid, you ain't sleepin' again?” Big Jo can already gauge by the bags under your eyes but he's a polite man so he feels the need to ask rather than state his assumptions.
“Day 6.” You answer simply, ever since you've started at Book & Nook the whole Cowell family became acutely aware of many of your disorders. By their record your longest time spent awake was ten days, you however adamantly say that you were an hour's mark away from ten full days so the longest you've been up is nine days in a row. And those are just the cases they know of since you've moved to Kepler.
Big Jo shook his head as a stern father would, which he is, “I have half the mind to send you home to rest.”
“That won't work.” you really don't mean to sound so coarse but it's so irritating having to go over this at least once a week.
“What about those gummy things Dia got you?”
“Long term that kind of stuff has no effect, sure it'll make me drowsie for an hour or two but even if it made me sleep one night I can't use it all the time. And before you ask the same questions again, caffeine has no real effect on me so limiting my intake will do nothing and weed doesn't do a thing for me either.” you state plainly, monotone as you present facts that everyone in the room already knows.
Looking at the stern face of Big Jo's and the exasperated face of Nate you continue, “I know it must be frustrating for you to not be able to help, but I'm content living like this. I like my late night adventures and when I do sleep it's really pleasant.”you threw in a smile for added comfort.
“Kid tha's not the point, there's somethin' wrong with you, medically I mean.” he's pinching the bridge of his nose, probably counting to ten to calm himself from raising his voice.
“Tons of people suffer from insomnia and there isn't anything a doctor could do for me except look for underlying conditions.” Big Jo's about to retort when you continue with, “Plus my dad and uncle both have insomnia as well so my case is due to the genetic lottery I lost.” You say with a hint of finality of your situation, you had to come to terms with this condition all the way back in high school. Having a decade to get used to your strange condition and the limitations it places on you from time to time. Whereas the Cowell family's only had two months to process this information, and you understand it'll take awhile before they stop being concerned. Same thing happened with you parents and friends back then too.
For now you're only met with more head shakes as if they were saying 'what are we going to do with you'. Leaving your medical issues aside Nate and Big Jo continue to talk shop, when the set up Nate just put on display catches Jo's eye.
Like lightening the tween was away from your side and by the new display shelf it looked like it held graphic novels. That's a first since you've been here, you walk over to join Jo knowing the second you do she'll start on about what's got her so excited. Most people might say you over indulge the child and coddle her but you actually just think it's really important to take interest in what makes kids happy. It helps them find their voices and also shows them that it's normal to get excited and like things.
“We got the TAZ graphic novels in?!” you hate rhetorical questions but smile and nod at her anyway.
“Have you read them? No, well you've listen to the podcast...what omg! Ok so there's these three brothers and their,” Jo begins regaling you with tales from the podcast known as The Adventure Zone and how fun they've made dungeons and dragons seem with their amazing story telling and funny characters.
You aren't sure if a show where the main group of heroes being called Tres Horny Bois is exactly age appropriate but when you look to Big Jo he kind of just shrugs it off. Turning you attention back to Jo who's now monologing about mongooses you just smile at the weird family you've found yourself in.
Let it be said that a tween with a slightly unhealthy fixation on something can find anyway to drag it back to that fixation. The day flew by with Jo explain the inner workings of dungeons and dragons, fifth edition, to you, her father, and her cousin after you mentioned why she didn't play. Apparently she'd love to but wanted a story fitting for her friend's to adventure. So being the good older cousin, father, and weird family friend you all were you came up with a story plot for her to use with her campaign.
The Jos had a lot of fun bonding over this little workshop and you guys even had food delivered so you and Nate could stay later. What was meant to just be a quick workshop turned into a mini family game night after you made several nearly impossible puzzles that wouldn't be used in Jo's campaign due to no one at the current table understanding how to solve it even after you showed them several times.
Overall it was fun and you think you might actually be tired enough to go to sleep tonight. You tried to stay and help clean up but Big Jo put his foot down and told you to go get some rest, he'd seen the way you occasionally look around the room as if something was moving behind them all. You may have started off as a cashier two months ago for him but his daughter has opened up a lot since meeting you and discovering that tics aren't so uncommon and there are people who wouldn't care or make a big deal out of them. Because of that you've earned your keep in his family, he already has you down on the list for Christmas cards.
Knowing you can't fight the six foot four man you roll your eyes and bid everyone good night, little Jo coming in to steal another hug from you and thank you for helping with her game. Checking on your skull you see the water's clear and dump it in the sink of the break room before leaving the skull to dry overnight, it's for sure gonna make Nate scream tomorrow, you can't help but chuckle at that.
Leaving through the back door and into the dusk colored parking lot you notice your trunk is popped open slightly. You definitely heard it shut earlier this morning. You blink before your head jerks to the right, unsettled by possibility of a break in and not risking it you head back inside.
“Hey, I think my car may have been broken into.” you stand awkwardly in the door way unsure of how to proceed.
Big Jo and Nate are out of the door as fast as they can. They find your car unlocked with the trunk popped, you know they weren't trying to brush you off when they asked several times if you did in fact lock your car this morning. After hearing your affirmative response each time, they began to inspect your car checking to make sure all wires are properly secured under the hood, Nate even retrieved the jack out of his own car to take a look under the car, ensuring the brakes hadn't been messed with. They started the car up just fine and it didn't appear tampered with. Even though nothing looked out of place and Nate's car, sitting in the same parking lot, hadn't been touched you appreciated them checking to make sure you were alright.
Knowing you're perceived as a woman by most, even outside of this small town, makes you uneasy when it comes to terms of abductions and violence. You know the chances and hear the stories whether it's from the victim's mouth or a podcaster's telling the story the dead can't. Nate offered to follow you home and make sure you were ok but you declined and said you'd call them both when you got home. Big Jo said to just call his home phone because Nate would be coming over tonight anyway, and if they didn't make it there before you called Dia was already at home and would pass the message along. You'll probably still try and give the shop a call if Dia answers, it wouldn't sit right with you if you wound everyone up just to not and at least try to settle their nerves.
With one final check of you car, the men even going so far as to lift seats up and feel under them, they sent you off. You drove carefully on the road tonight, ready to pull off into the shoulder at the slightest hint that something was wrong. Not even the radio was on something that you really didn't like driving without, but if there was the chance for you to catch a shift in tone of the machine you wanted to. Eventually you did end up making it home in one piece and you had called the Cowell family home, from the safety of your car, and got a spazztic eleven year old asking if you'd made it home alright. It took a little bit of coaxing but Little Jo calmed down and shouted to her parents that you were on the phone and alright.
“Kid,” looks like Big Jo took the phone away from Little Jo, “Everything ok on the drive.” Big Jo could hear the movement and shutting of your car door, he'd have to say he was relieved you waited until you were on the phone before exiting. He knew you lived out past the quiet zone in Old Lydia's house. A fact that did little for the unease he felt when he thought you were being watched.
“Oh, yea drive was fine, too quiet but fine.” you said simply as you began circling the cottage. Nothing seemed out of place on the outside, even looking above eye level where people tended to get sloppy in stalking or home invasion cases, everything seemed fine.
“Hope you don't mind if I keep you for a bit.” You had just unlocked your door and stepped in.
“Nah, kid 's fine.” you give a hum of acknowledgment as you look through the kitchen in cabinets, under cupboards, and even under the table.
“You're a smart kid.” he's taken that fatherly overtone that makes you roll your eyes. You understand the sentiment of parents and parental figures having pride in their child or ward but it's always been so weird to you when they feel the need to bring it up. Especially when they bring it up in situations that are dangerous, like can you not make it sound like someone's about to die.
Finding nothing in the living room, hall closet or bathroom you make sure all the windows are locked and dowels are in place to keep them from opening. And you double check that both the back and front doors are secured. You can hear the hushed whispers on the other end of the line, Dia must have just found out about your car, as you rustle through your kitchen utensil drawers taking out two forks before you make your way to your bedroom.
Once in your room you checked your closet and under your bed. Finding nothing you  went to the window in your room, the one right by your bed, you checked the lock, secured it in place with two dowels, and then covered it throwing a thick blanket over the curtain rod to ensure no one would be viewing you in your sleep or the precautions you were about to do. Turing around and locking your bedroom door you then jam one fork into the closed door crease, right below the locking mechanism, and jammed the other fork perpendicular through the prongs. You attempted to open the door with all your weight but only could get an inch in before the forks would stop more movement.
“Kid you alright over there?” it's rushed, he probably heard the commotion with your make shift lock.
“Yea, just had to add another lock to the door.” you trust the Cowell's but you understand how stupid it'd be to let them know exactly how you were defending yourself. Even if it wasn't them there's no telling if the person who broke into your car was outside and just good at hiding. You could also be too jumpy from your true crime shows but you figure it's better to be safe.
“I think everything's good Big Jo.” taking a final glance around your room eye's landing on the bed, “Think I'm even ready to go to sleep tonight too.” a small half laugh leaves your mouth.
“Alright kid, you call if you need anything got it.” it's an order not a request.
“Got it, good night.” Big Jo might think that'd been rude coming from anyone else but from you he can only roll his eyes at the brevity and the dial tone he's met with. He has his own sweep to do, if they were targeting his employee there was a reason. He hasn't had any problems since coming to Kepler but someone always eventually comes along who can't take a hint.
Even combing through your home with Big Jo on the line you didn't feel safe having your bed by the window anymore and moved it away and in front of the closet door. You'd rearrange your room later but for tonight this would have to do. By some grace of god you were actually able to shut your brain down tonight and rest. Maybe it was the excitement and merriment from hanging out with the Cowells or more likely the situation you find yourself in of perhaps being a target for something insidious.
Whatever the case may be you are off to the land of dreams before you know it. And unbeknownst to you the same eyes from this morning watch your home. They may not have seen what you did in there but they'd be sure to catch you when you come out. They'll wait all night to catch you if they have to.

In My Daughter’s Eyes Chapter 33: Blueprints
Chapter 32

March 19
Jamie’s car hummed down the highway, one hand on the wheel, the other laced with Claire’s. The Spotify playlist he’d put together for the trip had gone over swimmingly; he’d mixed together all of Claire’s favorites—Barry Manilow, Elton John, Billy Joel to name a few—a few miscellaneous songs he knew she liked, and a few of his own favorites, some country songs that he knew would earn him a scoff and an eye roll.
The trip up, he could hear Claire humming as she gazed out the window.
“Come on, Sassenach. Sing.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Why no’? Ye’re embarrassed?”
“Yes! And why shouldn't I be?”
“Because ye’ve, repeatedly, might I add, held my face between yer legs and begged like a depraved—”
“Oh my god! Fine!”
She’d blasted the volume, perhaps because she thought he wouldn’t be able to hear her as clearly, and she begrudgingly began singing along to Manilow’s “I Write the Songs.” After a few minutes, and after Jamie had rolled the windows down all the way, she was singing at full volume, her hair whipping into her open mouth.
She was no professional by any means, but she had a sweet, sultry, velvet sounding tone to her voice. It was different from the way he’d heard her sing with Faith, more wild and unconfined.
Now, on the way back, she was bopping to “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart,” swinging their joined hands between them. He flicked his eyes off the road for just a second to take her in, and he kissed her hand as she continued.
They’d had a wonderful weekend, just the two of them, for the first time. Through Self Direction, Claire was entitled to something she referred to as the special needs parent respite program, a trip paid for by Self Direction, and childcare provided by them as well. Mrs. Lickett, Leina, and Amy had rotated their time with Faith all weekend since Friday afternoon. Claire had been incredibly nervous, especially since Amy and Leina were still relatively new. But with Jamie’s reassurance, she’d managed to let herself believe that January to March was enough time to get accustomed to two new people without Mummy or Jamie being around. Mrs. Lickett was the one doing bedtime and overnights anyway, which was something Faith was already accustomed to with her.
“I haven’t had a weekend away since before she was born.”
Jamie had burned with hatred for the sorry excuse for a husband she’d had before, and he simultaneously vowed that this weekend away would be the best she ever had.
And, not to pat himself on the back, but he was nearly certain it had been.
They’d stayed at a quaint bed and breakfast in Auburn, by the Finger Lakes. They visited a winery, did a beer trail—the Finger Lakes Beer Trail, to be exact, hiked through a state park, went biking, made love in a hot tub, made love in their bed, made love on the balcony of their suite overlooking a garden, made love on the hike through the state park…
Come to think of it, Jamie could not name a place that they hadn’t christened as such on their trip.
As much as he loved Faith, really and truly loved her like she was his own daughter, having Claire to himself was a thrill like no other. He’d underestimated how incredible it would be. He thought that they’d gone on plenty of dates, spent plenty of late nights together with Faith fast asleep…but this trip had been different. Is this what their honeymoon would be like, he wondered…?
Proposal first, then marriage, then honeymoon, Fraser.
“Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” concluded, and Claire sighed lazily, leaning across the gap in the seats to lay her head on his shoulder, resting their joined hands in his lap. “Copacabana” came on next, and he glanced down at her mischievously, expecting the performance of a lifetime. She didn’t budge, just nestled further into his shoulder.
What’s this, Sassenach? This is a Barry classic.”
She chuckled softly. “I know. I’m just very tired. We didn’t exactly do much sleeping.”
He made an amused noise in the back of his throat. “Aye. Something that I refuse to be sorry for.”
“Don’t worry. I don’t want you to be.”
Barry carried on about Lola and Tony, and Claire remained silent, even at the climax of the song.
“Ye sure ye’re alright?”
She looked like she was about to say something, but she didn’t. Then, after a moment:
“It just feels like it went so fast.”
“I ken what ye mean.”
“It’s not that I’m dreading parenting again. I mean, that’s a daily existential dread kind of thing. But it’s not like I don’t want to go back home to Faith.”
“Ye’ll miss me that much?” he was teasing, laughing as he said it.
“Yeah.” She was gravely serious.
His brow furrowed, and he brought their hands to his lips to kiss her knuckles again. He didn’t know what to say.
“I’m just…I’m tired of saying goodbye.”
The lines on his forehead deepened. “What d’ye mean?”
“I mean I…” She sighed, frustrated. She sat up, keeping their hands clasped. “Could you pull over?”
His heart leapt into his throat, his stomach tumbling. Rationally, he knew this could not have been going in a direction that would shatter his heart. It would make no sense. But logic could not calm the nausea as he took the next exit and pulled into the first parking lot that came up: a Burger King.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing! Oh God, nothing is wrong,” she said, shaking her head, laughing. She released his hand to unbuckle, then got up on her knees in the passenger seat. She took his hand with both hers, facing him. “I’m sorry I worried you.”
He unbuckled as well, swiveled a bit in the seat, and closed his free hand over hers.
“I’ve wanted to ask you this for a while, because it just makes sense, but I thought I might sound crazy because it seemed too soon.”
His confusion must have been visible, because she laughed again.
“What I’m trying to say, and failing miserably at…is that I…I’m tired of having to say goodbye. I want you here. Well, not here. But home. With us.”
He blinked dumbly “Ye…ye want me to move in…? Wi’ you?”
Claire nodded, chewing on her bottom lip. “Is that crazy?”
To answer her, he captured her lips with his, kissing her firmly, sucking in through his nose for air. “Is it crazy that I’ve been wishing fer it fer months?”
She chuckled through her nose and kissed him again. Christ! And to think he was worried! She wanted him to live with her! Her and her child! It was, of course, something that he hadn’t been unable to stop thinking about for a while as well, but he’d never have asked it of her, not before she was ready. He never asked a thing of her before she was ready. And it always worked out in his favor.
She lost her balance, leaning so deeply into the kiss that she tipped off her seat and face first into Jamie’s lap, and they sputtered with laughter.
“Sorry…” She scrambled back onto her side, but not before pecking him on the cheek.
“You’re flushed wi’ joy, mo ghraidh.” He tucked a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
“Well, shouldn’t I be? I just snagged the hottest roommate on Long Island.”
He laughed, gently tugging on the strand of hair.
“Well, since we’re here, would you like some deplorable fast food?”
Jamie winced. “Tempting as that sounds…I’d rather we drive around fer something else.”
“Fair enough. Burger King doesn't exactly seem like the best meal to celebrate a couple moving in together.”
Christ! Moving in together!
“I dinna understand it.”
“What? Burger King?”
“No…I dinna understand how every single time I think I couldna possibly be any happier…I’m always proven wrong.”
——
Jamie pulled up in front of Claire’s apartment a little after eleven that night.
Our apartment, he reminded himself.
He reached over and nudged her awake, and she woke with a start.
“Shit…how long have I been out?”
“About two hours.”
“Jamie! You should’ve woken me! I feel awful for making you do all that driving alone.”
“Don’t. Ye’re the busy career woman here.”
“You have a career.”
“No’ one that starts at seven in the morning tomorrow.”
She sighed and then got out of the car, retrieving her duffle bag from the back seat. Jamie followed her up the stairs, and Mrs. Lickett was on the couch, asleep with a book in her lap. Claire gently woke her, thanked her profusely. Jamie looked around the living room, the photographs on the walls and surfaces that now included him in them, and he wanted to weep.
Claire went in to check on Faith, and Jamie wandered into the bathroom, still holding his duffle bag. He opened it and pulled out the pouch containing his toiletries. He pulled out his toothbrush and slowly, reverently, slid it into the cup that contained Claire’s and Faith’s, full of princess logos. He tucked his shaving kit into an empty space in a drawer and slid his deodorant next to Claire’s behind the mirror. The rest of his toiletries were all travel sized, so he kept them away.
He was brought out of this ritualistic unpacking by soft lips on his shoulder, and he turned to take her in his arms.
“Hmm,” she said, looking at the toothbrushes. “How symbolic.”
He hummed in thoughtful amusement, reverently kissing the crown of her head. She pulled away to sweetly kiss him on the lips, then caressed his face in her small, tender hands.
“Welcome home, love.”
——
May 12
Jamie was awake long before Claire, long before even the sun rose. Unable to sit still any longer, he carefully tucked blankets and pillows against Claire’s back, knowing the lack of his warm presence might wake her, and he slipped out of bed. Last night had been rather hectic, and Claire had desperately wanted to pack everything for the zoo the night before, but had been unable. So Jamie took the initiative now, laying out the sunscreen, packing all of Faith’s snacks, unplugging her play-tablet and putting it and her headphones in the electronics bag. He checked the charge on her assistive communication tablet and decided to plug it in anyway just in case, making a note to not let her leave without it. He packed doggy bags and Angus’s portable food and water bowls. He packed a few snacks for himself and Claire, and then he moved onto prepping breakfast.
He wouldn’t actually cook them just yet, given that Faith wouldn’t be awake for at least another hour, but he prepared batter, fruit, and chocolate chips for birthday pancakes. He moved to the fridge, checking the cabinet above it where he and Claire had hidden her birthday presents. They each had one to give her today, and one to give her the day of her party next weekend; next weekend since Mother’s Day was that coming weekend. They hadn’t decided if she’d be opening the presents before or after the zoo, so he kept them up there, deciding it best to wait if she asked for them or not. He let himself sit on the couch for a bit before he started heating the pan for the pancakes. He smiled at his tartan blanket, very at home on Claire’s couch.
He’d finished moving over all of his things in the beginning of April, and that night, he and Claire had champagne in their kitchen. He’d put all his own furniture and dishes in storage, to be placed in a house someday, if that was what Claire wanted. He’d brought over his cubed shelving, the kind that you bought with fabric drawers, and between that and the spare closet in the master that Claire hadn’t previously needed, everything fit perfectly. Atop the shelves, he laid out a few picture frames of his family, and what didn’t fit, Claire added to the wall of framed photos of her and Faith—well, her Faith, and Jamie.
Faith had adjusted beautifully, apparently hardly noticing a difference between Jamie being over all the time and just living there. Her favorite change had not, evidently, been Jamie himself, but the tartan blanket. She was constantly wrapping herself up in it, even as the May weather got increasingly warmer, rubbing it on her face, humming contently. It made Jamie unreasonably happy; it felt as if Faith’s love for the blanket extended into a love for his culture that he was so passionate about, an acceptance and celebration of who he was. He knew that was silly; she could not possibly understand the depth of its meaning, but the smile on her face when she became a tartan burrito was joy enough for him. Claire, of course, did not appreciate Faith’s attempts at eating dinner as said burrito…nor Jamie’s encouragement of the habit.
Jamie heaved himself off the couch and made his way into the kitchen to start cooking, but then a door burst open, followed by giggling, and the pattering of six little feet. Faith collided with his legs before he could cross the threshold into the kitchen, and Angus sat dutifully behind.
“Well, would ye look who it is.”
Jamie bent down to pry her off his legs and lift her above his head, causing her to squeal.
“The birthday princess herself!”
He settled her on his hip and kissed her cheek, but she reached up again, grunting, apparently wanting to be thrown up again. Jamie just shook his head and continued into the kitchen.
“What day is it, lass? Can ye tell me?” She signed birthday about a dozen times in a row, vibrating with excitement. “Aye, that’s right. Happy birthday.” He signed the words with one hand, then kissed her nose. “Would ye like to help me make yer birthday breakfast, a leannan?”
Faith reached greedy hands toward the pancake mix, and he chuckled. “Aye, we’ll get there. We have to let Angus outside first. Come on.” He carried her to the sliding glass door that led to the balcony, where they kept a few of those synthetic grass potty-patches for dogs, occasionally emptied by Jamie or Claire (mostly Jamie, but who was counting). They tried very hard to ingrain in Faith that it was her job to let him out, but it would take a while before she did so without being told. Jamie flipped the lock for her, and she used all her strength to heave open the door, and Angus pattered outside. Jamie then helped her get him fresh water and his breakfast, and then he was back inside, eating and drinking, and Jamie sat Faith on the counter.
Jamie scooped three circles into the pan of perfect proportion for Mickey Mouse, and Faith gasped dramatically. “Who’s that, Faith?”
She answered him with two perfect cups of her hands atop her head, the sign for Mickey Mouse.
“Clever lass! That’s Mickey, alright. Good signing. Good job.”
Jamie gave her a handful of chocolate chips to drop into the pancake, and she plopped them all in one spot. Jamie snorted, laughing. For the next handful, he tried hand over hand in an attempt to get her to spread them more evenly, but then she learned that the more she did it wrong, the more Jamie would try to correct her until she’d be eating chocolate chips with a side of pancake.
“Alright, no more,” Jamie said. “Ye can put some in mine and Mummy’s. How’s that?”
Before Faith could protest, Jamie was flipping the pancake, and she gasped again. “See? Mickey’s almost done cooking.”
Jamie almost laughed at how strange that sentence would sound in any other context. He slid the pancake onto a plate, used whipped cream to make eyes, a mouth, and a nose, and covered the spots with berries.
“There he is, lass.” He put the plate on the table with a flourish, and Faith threw her hands up, demanding to be taken off the counter and put in front of her food. He obliged her, carrying her over with airplane noises, and dropping her in her seat with a little crash sound effect. “There ye go. Special birthday breakfast for the birthday girl.” He kissed her head. “Ye have to eat his face first, ye ken. His eyes, his nose, his mouth.” He pointed to the strawberry eyes and nose and the blueberry mouth. “When ye finish that, then ye get syrup to eat his head. Aye?”
Faith began shoveling berries into her mouth with no regard for the whipped cream, covering her hands and face with it. Jamie started the next batch of pancakes while she ate her berries, and he cut hers up for her and added syrup while the first side was cooking. When it was time, he brought over the pan and let her put some chips in before returning it to the stove. He checked the time, decided he could let Claire sleep for a few more minutes, then started the last batch of pancakes.
When Faith was done eating and the stove was off, he spent a great deal of time de-sticky-fying Faith’s hands and face, and then he led her to his and Claire’s bedroom. (Christ, he still got butterflies thinking of it as theirs.) Faith was bouncing with excitement, but Jamie made her wait for his dramatic count to three before throwing the door open and letting her zoom into the room and onto the bed.
Jamie chuckled at the undignified oomph that Faith forced out of Claire when she pounced on her back. She started grumbling, face still in the pillow, and then it was like a switch was flipped, as if her morning-brain needed a few seconds to remember the day.
“Oh, my sweet girl!”
Her voice was breathy and still drugged with sleep, but the joy was real as she flipped over onto her back and pulled Faith to her chest.
“My six year old! Oh my goodness…”
She showered Faith’s curly head with kisses, and Faith hummed contentedly. Jamie sat on the bed by Claire’s legs, feeling a few miles closer to heaven at the sight of his girls tangled up in bed, a mess of wild curls spilling all over the pillows.
“Happy birthday, my little love.”
Faith hummed and began pushing violently away from Claire. Claire sputtered, jerking away and releasing her, and then Faith was scampering away.
“Are those pancakes I smell?” Claire said hopefully, her eyes still only half open.
“That they are.” Jamie leaned over and kissed her, and she moaned sleepily, letting him press her into the pillow, and then—
“Zoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoo—“
“Jesus H. Christ, how many times did she press it?”
Jamie sat up, looking over at Faith’s tablet screen. “Quite a bit.”
“Zoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoozoo—“
“Well make it stop!”
“Zoozoozoozoozoozoo—”
“Yes, Faith, we hear ye.” Jamie pressed the top of the screen to stop the endless stream and quickly cleared it before she could press it again. “Mummy is getting up right now, and then we’ll be getting dressed, then sunscreen, then off to the zoo.”
“She’s doing it again—”
“Come on, lass, let’s get ye dressed.”
Jamie hauled her over his shoulder, causing the iPad to flop onto the mattress. She squealed, letting her limbs fall limp.
“Yer breakfast is on the table. I packed everything we could possibly need. Eat, get ready. Let me see to her.”
“You do know it’s her birthday, not mine. You don’t need to pamper me.”
“Ach, there’s where ye’re wrong.” He sauntered over, six year old still tossed over his shoulder. “Six years ago ye were in labor fer…”
“Twenty-three hours.”
“Twenty-three bloody hours.” He leaned over, eliciting another squeal from Faith, and kissed her. “I say today is a day ye deserve to be celebrated as well. Go eat. Enjoy.”
“You sweet, bloody man.”
“Aye, I am.” He stood up straight again, and Faith let loose another squeal. “Off we go, birthday girl!”
——
It was midday; they’d just eaten lunch and ice cream, so any crabbiness to be found in the little girl was dispelled as they strolled through the gorilla exhibit. As Claire had told him she would, Faith was telling every animal she came across that it was her birthday, using her signs. Faith and Angus were held on by Claire, and Jamie pushed the stroller that was holding their bags, Faith’s communication device, and the two giraffes that she’d gotten last year’s birthday. (They’d in fact gotten ten minutes away from the house before Faith had started wailing, and it had dawned on Claire impressively quickly that Faith likely had meant to take them with her; of course they’d turned around to get them.) He and Claire had a running bet going as to which animals she’d get this year, because they both knew full well that she’d be doing the exact same thing, her desire for repeating matching sets all too permeating in everything she did.
“You know,” Claire said over her shoulder. “I think I might change my bet to gorillas.”
“Ye sure?” Jamie cocked a brow. “After last year’s debacle wi’ the tigers no’ appearing, then she sees them this year…ye were quite certain.”
“Yes, but look!”
Faith practically had her nose pressed into the glass, her eyes locked on a mother gorilla with a baby on her back.
“Aye, she’s quite taken.” Jamie watched the mother and baby.
“It’s amazing, isn’t it?” Claire said softly. “I mean, look at her eyes. How can anyone believe she doesn’t have a soul.”
Jamie glanced at Claire, as enthralled with the creatures as Faith was, and his heart warmed. “Aye. They’re beautiful.” He crossed his arms. “Though my bet will remain wi’ the red pandas. They’re just too damned cute fer a wee lass to no’ want.”
Claire opened her mouth to retort, but it died on her lips, and she stiffened. Jamie’s brow furrowed, confused. Before he could ask what was wrong, a loud, high-pitched voice sounded, apparently for the second time. The child had been talking already; he just hadn’t heard it at first.
“Can you stop that whining noise? It’s annoying.”
Jamie flicked his eyes down, and sure enough, there was a little girl, standing far too close to Faith for comfort. Faith was humming, her usual, happy stimming sound. She was having fun. Jamie was so used to the noise he hadn’t even registered she was making it. It was white noise to him at this point, to Claire as well, he knew.
“Can you stop that whining noise? It’s annoying!”
“That’s the third time,” Claire hissed, and her small body began shaking with rage.
“Stop. It’s annoying.”
“You’re going to let her talk to my child like that?” Claire raised her voice above its previous whisper, and Jamie’s stomach flipped.
“What?” An older woman, appearing to be the complainant’s grandmother, turned away from the glass.
“You’re standing right there. I know you can hear her being nasty to my child.”
“Claire.”
“No! I want her to answer me.”
“Hey! Stop it!” In her final, fatal mistake, the blonde girl gently shoved Faith by the shoulder, appearing as if she only wanted to get her attention.
“Makenna, come on, let her be,” the grandmother finally intervened.
“Get her away from her, now.”
“Hey. They’re just being kids. Relax.”
“No. My daughter is being a kid. Your granddaughter is bullying her for being happy!”
Without another word, the grandma seized Makenna by the hand and dragged her away, disappearing into the crowd. Jamie wrapped a firm hand around Claire’s wrist to stop her from running after her.
“It’s no’ worth it. They’re leaving.”
“I feel like I’m about to explode.”
“Aye,” Jamie said softly, indeed feeling her vibrating intensifying. “I can feel. It’s over now. Look at her, she’s fine. She didna hear a word of it.”
Faith was indeed oblivious; her noise-cancelling headphones were secure in place, and she’d likely thought the girl’s small shove to be Angus. She was far too focused on the baby gorilla to have a care in the world.
“She’s fine, Claire,” Jamie repeated, loosening his grip on her wrist now that Makenna and grandma were out of sight. “Her birthday hasna been ruined. She willna remember that at all. If ye made a scene…that she’d remember.”
Claire hastily, angrily, swiped at a few tears. “I know.”
A few other guests were giving them looks over their shoulders or out of the corner of their eye. Whether it was because they, too, found Claire’s daughter annoying, or because they felt sympathy, was anyone’s guess. Nobody came forward to offer support, but neither did anyone else condemn them.
“She’s fine.”
“Yes. She’s okay.”
“Are you?” Jamie tried to meet her eye, and she finally let him. She nodded minutely.
“Just…I need to forget about it…”
Jamie nodded. Claire crouched down next to Faith, tapping her shoulder gently to signify that she was coming close so as to not startle her, being that she couldn’t hear anything. Claire began signing to her, and Faith answered clumsily, pointing to the mother and baby gorilla. After taking a moment to blink away his own tears that he hadn’t let show until Claire couldn’t see, he crouched down on her other side and joined the conversation.
She was fine, she was oblivious. She was happy, blissfully so. Her birthday was still perfect.
But Christ, that had hurt.
At the end of the day, neither Jamie nor Claire had won the bet. Despite Faith’s awe over the baby gorilla, the cuteness of the red pandas, or even, for argument’s sake, the appearance of the tigers, they walked out of the gift shop with a mother and baby elephant. Faith settled into the stroller for the journey back to the car, and by the time they took Angus for a potty break and made it to the exit, she was fast asleep, two giraffes and two elephants piled on her tiny body.
“Hey,” Jamie said. He was pushing the stroller with both hands, and one of Claire’s hands rested on his, her other holding Angus’s leash. “I love you.”
Claire peered up at him through her lashes and pecked him gratefully on the lips. “It was wonderful to have you here this year. It was the perfect sixth birthday.”
“It was. Wasn’t it?”
“Yeah. It was.”
Her cheeks were slightly pinked with sunburn, her nose darted with new freckles. Her amber eyes were swimming with the colors of the sunset around them, and Jamie sighed in perfect contentment.
“Jamie?”
“Hm?”
“I love you, too.”
No, now he was perfectly content.
——
May 14
Claire opened her mouth again, waiting patiently for Jamie’s response, and she hummed happily when he popped another grape between her lips. She sighed contentedly, shimmying back into his chest. His arms snaked around her again, and he kissed her temple. They were leaning against a tree, covered by the shade, watching Faith on a playground. It was completely fenced in, the playground and an adjoining field. Angus was laying in the grass napping, off duty until Faith needed him. She was quite independent on playgrounds these days, preferring to stop around, climb up the slide and then slide back down on her stomach, bounce on the see-saw herself, rather than drag her dog along with her. It was a good thing, Jamie had decided. The only time Faith decided to be utterly helpless was when she wanted to be pushed on the swing. She could pump her legs; Jamie had seen her do it. But she would always and forever prefer Jamie to push her. He’d been up and down a few times over the course of the afternoon.
It was a beautiful Sunday, Mother’s Day. They’d had a picnic lunch in the field, then sent Faith off to play. It was the perfect balance for Claire; Faith was close enough, having a grand old time, and yet Claire wasn’t overworked or stressed. They could just be like this, as a family.
Jamie had recently refrained from feeling any guilt when referring to the girls as his family. It was not presumptuous, not overstepping. Not anymore.
Jamie and Faith had presented Claire with breakfast in bed this morning, but not until eleven. Faith was ready to cook and have it delivered at seven, but Jamie managed to keep her happy with Sesame Street, Disney Channel, and a trip to the florist until an acceptable hour for letting Claire sleep in. The pancakes were all, of course, Mickey shaped, at Faith’s insistence. Claire loved them, and told Faith as such over and over. As Jamie had carried in the breakfast, Faith had carried in the flowers. It had been a perfect morning that carried into a perfect afternoon.
“I don’t see her,” Claire said, craning her neck. “Do you?”
“Aye, she’s under that wee rock wall cave.” Jamie gestured with his chin. “That flash o’ pink in the window. See?”
It was a small arch made of rock climbing wall that came just above Jamie’s knees. Faith enjoyed heaving herself up and just standing there, and apparently hiding underneath.
“Oh, yes, I see.” Claire eased back again. “How long has she been in there?”
“A fair bit,” he said.
“Is she just…sitting in there?”
“Aye, but I think she’s been making a nest.”
“What?”
“Ye haven’t noticed that she’s been picking up leaves and bringing them in there wi’ her?”
“No…” Claire said, a bit dazed. “I was trying to look for her on the slides or the ladders. In the groups of kids.”
“When have ye ever kent yer daughter to be among throngs of weans?” He’d meant it as a joke, but she deflated a bit.
“I hear them trying to talk to her,” she said softly. “Asking her her name, how old she is. Will she play tag, or hide and seek.”
In the beginning, Jamie and Claire had switched on and off shouting over to the kids and telling them that Faith wouldn’t answer, but after so many times, they’d given up. Faith wasn’t bothered either way.
“She’s perfectly happy on her own,” Jamie assured her.
“You don’t think she gets lonely? Or feels left out?”
“Nah.” Jamie kissed the crown of her head. “Not every kid, or every adult for that matter, needs conventional companionship. If she was lonely or unhappy she’d be all over us, asking fer snacks or juice.”
“You’re right,” Claire acquiesced. “You’re always bloody right.” She swatted his forearm in mock resentment, and he just kissed her head again.
Less than an hour later, Jamie was folding up the blanket and rousing Angus. They were out of snacks, and by the time they got home, it would be time to start dinner. When Jamie had asked Claire what she’d wanted for her Mother’s Day feast, all she’d requested was something they could all make together. So he’d decided on homemade pizza with all the toppings that Faith could throw on it to her heart’s desire.
“Come on! Five minutes are up!” Claire called, making her way to the playground. Faith was still under the rock wall. When Jamie had given her the five minute warning, she’d been on her knees and elbows, her head practically tucked into the ground.
Faith crawled out of the little tunnel obediently, and Claire reached out her hand, and Faith took it. Jamie made his way over to walk with them to the car, but Faith started tugging back.
“No, Faith. Playground is all done. It’s time to make pizza. Remember? We’ll get your chef apron, and—”
“Sassenach.”
“What?”
Jamie jerked his chin to where Faith was pulling toward. A single brown leaf was stuck in the grass, just outside the perimeter of the spongy playground floor. Claire let go of Faith’s hand, and she scuttled over to the leaf and picked it up. They watched as she crawled back into the tunnel, and she emerged almost immediately, giving Claire her hand right away.
“Good girl. Thank you, lovie.”
Instead of making her way to the car, Claire inched toward the tunnel. “Mummy wants to see what you made.”
Jamie smiled, following closely behind. Claire bent down to look into the little hole in the rock wall that they could see Faith through before.
“Wow, look at that,” Claire said, her voice breathy. “You made a little nest. That’s so sweet, baby.”
Jamie peered in, his grin stretching from ear to ear. She had to have picked up every single leaf in the entire playground, the entire field for that matter. He heard Claire sniffle, and he stole a kiss to her temple, onlooking children be damned.
“Mummy is so lucky, Faith,” she whispered, holding up the I love you sign. Faith copied, pressing the three fingers together, and Claire kissed Faith’s sweaty forehead.
——
At around nine-fifteen in the evening, Faith was fast asleep with Angus’s head trapped under her little arm. They’d all three spent the night making pizza, eating ice cream, and snuggling on the couch to watch The Little Mermaid. Jamie ducked out of Faith’s room, buzzing with excitement at having Claire to himself once more, and he locked the bedroom door behind him to find Claire already stripped down to her underwear and bra.
“Damn,” she said. “You weren’t supposed to come back until I was naked. I’m not wearing cute underwear.”
“Bloody hell, Sassenach,” Jamie half snorted, half growled. “D’ye think I give a bloody fuck about yer underwear?”
He attacked her lips with his, and there was a feverish ripping-off of clothing and underwear until they were both naked and hot and pressed together. Then Jamie slowed things down. He intended to worship her tonight, intended to show her with every kiss, touch, and stroke how much he loved her for the wonderful mother that she was, for the woman that she was. For the woman that she was because she was a mother.
After he made sure she’d found release with whatever method she deemed necessary, twice, Jamie finally perched over her and slammed home, delighting in the arch of her throat as she threw her head back in ecstasy. He could still taste her as he bent to kiss her, and her responding groan told him that she could also taste her.
He refrained from taking her hard and fast, not tonight. He let her feel every inch, let himself feel every inch. How many times had they done this? How many times had they gone to oblivion and back together?
As a lad, he’d been told by every teacher he ever had, all of them Catholic, that this was a sin. Not really the act itself, but doing it out of wedlock. He’d of course grown out of that belief, finding nothing short of holiness whenever he laid with Claire. Though, actually, the act itself could be considered a sin even in wedlock if done for pleasure. Some people believed this act must only be carried out if the intention was to create life.
Claire clenched around him, and he shuddered, groaning into her ear, unable to stop himself from speeding up.
“Yes…yes, love…”
He bit her ear, listening to her commands, listening to her body, and keeping up the faster pace.
Creating life…Christ, if Claire wasn’t on the pill, how many times might they have created life since last July?
She clawed at his back, dug her heels into his arse, mewling into his ear. His wee vixen would meet her end three times tonight, perhaps four if he paced himself.
How many times could he have made a mother of her since last July? Mathematically speaking, only once, really. It had only been ten months since they’d begun. But to think, every time he’d had her, every time she’d held him in place while he found bliss inside of her…
It was almost shameful, almost beastly, the primal urge he felt to mark her as such, to have her carry him inside her like that even long after they’d finished, pill or not.
And without that pill…
God, yes, he could make a mother out of her again. And she’d be beautiful; she’d be a goddess that they’d create together with their own hands, their own mouths, their own joining.
It was that thought that sent him fully out of control, no longer able to spare any ounce of power.
“Yes, yes, yes…”
Her words slurred until they were one strangled cry, and then they were falling together, teeth and nails latching onto anything they could.
Afterward, they lie sprawled on the disheveled sheets, catching their breath, comforter and throw pillows hastily tossed aside long ago. When Claire shivered, Jamie chuckled and pulled the top sheet over them. They were facing each other, and Claire looked mischievous, as if she were about to suggest something else to warm her up. She didn’t, though, just kept looking into his eyes like she was keeping a secret.
Then he began feeling like he was the one keeping a secret. He bit his lip, debating opening his mouth to speak or to capture that exposed, beautiful nipple again and distract her, distract himself.
He cleared his throat.
“Can I ask ye a question?” He propped himself up on his hand, and she smiled up at him.
“Of course.” She turned slightly to see him better.
“D’ye ever think about…” His voice trailed off, his throat suddenly filling with sand. Or vomit.
“What?” She mirrored him, propping up on her hand as well. “You can ask me anything, Jamie.”
He smiled nervously and averted his eyes for just a second. “Children. Well, more, that is.”
Claire blinked at him, clearly surprised.
“I’m sorry if that’s out of line…”
“No.” She stopped him before he could fully spiral, sitting up and covering herself with the sheet. “It isn’t at all.”
He sat up as well. “Ye sure?”
“We’re…building a life here, Jamie. Aren’t we?”
Now she seemed nervous.
“Aye.” He sat up and took her hand assuredly. “That we are.”
Her tight face relaxed into a tiny smile, and she squeezed his hand. “Right. So…if you want more children…you’re allowed to share that with me.”
“I didna say I — ”
“Then why are you asking?”
He had nothing to say to that.
“You’d want that?” she asked, her voice suddenly quite small. “You’d want to…have a baby? With me?”
Jamie felt his heart leap into his throat. “Aye,” he said, perhaps too quickly. “No’ right away,” he remedied. “Just…in the future. I…ye ken I love Faith like she’s my own. And together I…we’ll raise her together. As ours.”
Claire nodded, her eyes misting.
“And I could always and forever be happy wi’ just that,” Jamie continued. “It doesna matter to me that she was…sired by someone else. No’ at all. But…to see ye grow round wi’ child…my child…” It was his turn to well up. “D’ye ken I’d give anything to have known Faith fer…even a day longer than I’ve known her…? To have seen her take her first steps, watch her grow from the size of my hand to a full little person…to have watched ye carry her, bring her into the world, hold yer hand through it. To hear her first cry…Christ.” He hastily wiped his eyes. “To…to have been there during her diagnosis, fer both of ye. I wish every day I could have all of it. Because to me…she’s mine. And I canna imagine it any other way. But I wasna there.”
“Oh, Jamie…”
“It’s foolish.”
“No.” She fervently shook her head. “Not at all.”
“I mean it’s…it’s wrong…selfish to want to have a bairn wi’ ye because I didna have all that wi’ Faith. Isn’t it?”
She offered a tiny smile, shaking her head again. “You silly man. You want to be a father, and all that goes with it. That’s not selfish. That’s beautiful.”
“Ye dinna think me a greedy, ungrateful bastard?”
She bit her lip, laughing through her nose, shaking her head. She cupped his face, her grin broadening. “Someday, Jamie…it would be the greatest honor to carry your baby.”
Overwhelmed with relief and joy, Jamie kissed her passionately. He hadn’t lied; he would be happy, more than happy, to raise Faith alone as his daughter. But he feared there would always be a part of him that longed for a baby, that longed to see Claire pregnant, nursing, all of it. The thought of having it someday was enough to send him shooting into the sky.
When their lips parted, Claire did not look as joyful as he felt.
“What is it?” he said immediately.
“Jamie, I…I do want it. I want to have a baby together. Someday. But…” She swallowed. “It’s not…a proven fact, but some studies show that it’s…genetic. Autism, I mean. There’s a high chance for a second-born.”
He nodded, slowly understanding.
“I say this with all the love in my heart for Faith, but…could you…could we handle a second child with needs like hers?”
Jamie’s brow furrowed, but he nodded without hesitation. “Faith is old enough now, we’ve got a system in place fer her. If we had to do it all over again with another, it wouldna be easy, but ye wouldna be going into it blind again.”
Claire nodded. “Okay.”
“Would it be alright wi’ you?” Jamie asked. “I have no judgement, Sassenach. Ye ken that. But you know as well as any that becoming a parent means ye’re to be prepared fer any kind of child. If ye truly think it wouldna be best fer you, or Faith, then she should be our only one.”
Claire waited only a brief moment before shaking her head. “If the doctor had put Faith in my arms for the first time and said, ‘this is your baby, but she’s going to have autism’…I wouldn’t have given a damn. I was already in love. From that first second.” She squeezed his hand. “I want that again, no matter what. I want you to experience that. With me.” She kissed him sweetly, gently. “I want your child, Jamie, no matter what.”
He was happier than he’d been just two minutes ago, happier than he thought possible. As he sealed that oath with another kiss, he knew it was time.
Time to put that ring that he’d bought in August to good use.

Take A Little Ride
Angel Reyes x F!Reader
Request from @bishopslosawife: What if one of the Mayans’ S/O was an NFR professional barrel rider from the south? Like S/O plans a trail ride for everyone to get them to relax and someone recognizes her and asks her to show off her moves? Maybe S/O has a horse boarding at the stable?
Warnings: language
Word Count: 4.3k
A/N: (Sorry if this is the second time you’re seeing this fic! I’ve had some issues with posts disappearing from my blog and the tags and I’m trying to get everything back on track haha.) I know we talked about this fic forever ago, and I’ve been thinking about it ever since lol. We threw around a lot of ideas and I tried to fit as many into this fic as possible without it feeling cluttered. Also, I know this is technically an Angel fic, but we get to see a lot of our boys in this story. Hope you enjoy! xo

“Oh come on,” you pleaded as you sat in Angel’s lap, “It would be so fun!”
He chuckled, shaking his head, “Yea, for you maybe. I’d have no fuckin’ clue what to do.”
“It’s really not that hard,” you reassured him.
EZ sat down across from the two of you, “What is Angel fighting you about now?” he smirked.
You laughed, “I was saying that we should go for a trail ride sometime soon—all of us. It’s such a good way to unwind.”
“What’s the issue then?” he was clearly confused.
“She means a horseback trail ride, Boy Scout,” Angel piped in with a shake of his head before returning his gaze to you, “Anyone besides you and Taza even know how to ride?”
You paused, trying to think back on your conversations with everyone. Truthfully, now that he said it out loud, you couldn’t say for certain if any of the guys knew how to ride. You didn’t want to cop to that, but you weren’t a good liar, “I have no idea,” you chuckled, “I mean for some reason I wanna say that at one point Riz said something to me about it but I’m not sure. You guys could learn, though! It’s not like we’d be competing or anything, just a nice mellow trip. Like a hike! Besides, it’d be good for you boys to learn something new.”
“Y/N,” Angel started, “I’m not gonna fu—”
EZ cut him off, “I’m game,” he was genuinely interested, but he also loved being a little bit of an instigator when it came to things like this between you and Angel.
Your eyes lit up, “Yea?”
“Bro,” Angel shook his head, “What the fuck?”
“Put it to a vote!” you said excitedly, “That’s what y’all do, right?”
EZ laughed, nodding, “Yea, that’s exactly what we do.”
“What, we gonna go to Templo for this?” it was getting more and more difficult for Angel to keep a straight face.
“We’ll do it right here,” you leaned forward and grabbed your empty beer bottle off the table, rapping it on the wooden surface a few times to get everyone’s attention, “Hey! Boys! I have an offer for ya.”
If Angel had the ability to melt into the couch cushions, he would’ve. The guys could see the look on his face and it only made them more interested in what you were going to say. EZ was sitting back with a smug grin, extremely invested in where this was all going to go.
“What’s the offer?” Taza asked with a soft smile.
“So,” you got up off Angel’s lap, “I know y’all have had a rough couple of weeks. And I think it’d be good for everyone to get out and unwind,” they were all nodding along in agreement so far, “I just so happen to know of a really great ranch about forty minutes North of here. What would you guys say to a day trip and a trail ride? Switch things up a little.”
Taza’s response was immediate, “Sounds good to me.”
You could see the apprehension on some of their faces, so you tried to reassure them, “If you don’t know how to ride, they give you a rundown of the basics. Plus, the horses that they have there are all push-button—absolute gems.”
“How do you know about this place?” Bishop couldn’t help but to ask.
“I’ve been boarding my horse there since I moved to Cali,” you paused, “So, what d’you say?”
Sure enough, everyone started to speak up in agreement. You had never felt so excited. You looked back at Angel, who was shaking his head trying not to crack a smile. He had a feeling it was going to go this way.
“Majority vote,” Bishop said with a laugh, “It passes.”
“Yay!” you clapped, “Alright, I’ll call and get it all set up for this week. It’s gonna be so much fun, trust me.”
As the week passed by, Angel and a few of the other guys asked you questions about just what exactly they had gotten themselves into. They all knew that you rode, but they never thought it would have any crossover with their lives.
You all met up at the clubhouse late Saturday morning. You had your jeans and boots on, along with a tank top. You’d packed a backpack with water bottles and a few snacks, as well as your riding helmet. There was a palpable sense of excitement in the air, along with nervousness.
“You guys might not wanna take the bikes,” you warned with a laugh, “Your legs might be a little sore afterwards.”
They all stood and thought about it for a moment before deciding to take your word for it. They split up and piled into the few trucks they had, allowing you to lead the way since none of them knew where you were going. It was one of the very few times that Angel ever rode shotgun and let you take the wheel. You’d seen EZ crack a smile as his brother begrudgingly handed you the keys.
You rolled into your parking spot at the ranch, instantly jumping out of the truck once it was in park. The rest of the guys weren’t far behind, their vehicles falling into line with yours. You waited for them all and then waved for them to follow you as you confidently strode across the grounds to the barns. A few of the other people there smiled and waved to you, recognizing you from your frequent trips there.
The man who ran the ranch came out of one of the barns, arms out wide as he approached you, “Y/N, so good to see you,” he gave you a hug, “I was excited when they told me about your call.”
“Who’s this fuckin’ guy?” Angel murmured to EZ under his breath, elbowing him when he saw his brother trying to bite back a laugh.
You hadn’t heard the exchange, but you turned around to introduce everyone regardless, “Boys, this is Matthew—owner of this fine establishment and also one of the first people to help me settle in when I moved here to California. Matthew, this is my crew,” you laughed, “Best group of troublemakers you’ll ever meet.”
He laughed, nodding in acknowledgment, “Gentlemen, it’s a pleasure. I’m here to help and get you guys up and running, but you’re in good hands with Y/N here. She knows the trails out here like the back of her hand.”
“Well,” you chuckled, “I wasn’t gonna say it, but he’s totally right,” you clapped, “Let’s get you boys all saddled up and ready to go!”
It was refreshing to see them a little out of their element, with the exception of Taza, and surprisingly enough Coco seemed rather comfortable in the barn. You didn’t comment on it, wanting to see just how much he knew. But so far he had gotten all his tack on without much of an issue, and he seemed really comfortable with the horse they had provided for him.
You went back and forth with the guys about wearing helmets. Angel was adamant that he would be fine without one, “You’re not even gonna wear one! Or Taza!”
You laughed, “And when you’ve clocked as many hours as we have, you won’t have to wear one either. But for now, you’re gonna have to. Deal with it.”
“Yea,” EZ chuckled as he clipped his on, “Gotta save all the braincells that you can.”
“Shut up,” Angel shoved him as they both broke down in laughter.
Your horse was waiting patiently in her stall, all tacked up and ready to go. You were thankful that she was so mellow and patient, because you didn’t have to worry about her while you got everyone else situated. Up until that point, you had never realized just how diverse the ranch was when it came to breeds of horses. Most of them were rescues in some capacity, bought at auction when they weren’t competition or breeding material anymore, but they still made great companions, especially for beginners.
The fact that Taza let the boys struggle on their own a bit wasn’t lost on you. He was already perched atop his horse, waiting for the rest of them to get their acts together. You were certain that it was the most entertained that he had been in a while—you could see it in his eyes. To make up for the lack of Taza’s guidance, you were running around helping however you could.
“C’mon,” Coco taunted as he hoisted himself up onto his horse with ease, “What’s takin’ you guys so long?”
“Since when do you know anything about horses?” Angel said with a hint of bitterness to his voice.
“Psh, you don’t know everything about me, ‘mano. Don’t worry about it.”
Once everyone was on and ready to go, you finally went back to bring your own horse out. She was waiting patiently as ever in her stall. You slid the door open and stepped inside, gently resting your forehead against hers. It was exciting to be able to share this part of your life with all of them, even if it was going to be a little extra chaotic the first time around. You hoped, though, that they would enjoy it enough to want to come back and do it again. You thought that it would be good for them, because it certainly was for you.
You led your horse out of the barn, not that you really needed to be holding onto her reins anyway—she’d follow you wherever you went almost without question. You had her stop so you could slip your foot into your stirrup and hoist yourself onto her. The guys looked on in slight awe, not able to believe that it was so easy for someone of your height to climb up that easily onto a horse that was so tall.
Once you were situated in your stirrups and adjusted your backpack, you turned and looked around at your crew with a wide smile on your face, “Everyone feel like they sorta know what they’re doing? Matthew give you an overview of the basics?” there were various mumbled of agreement as they nodded their heads and you had to laugh, “You’ll be fine. Just remember, gentle on the reins—it’s attached to their mouths. Squeeze with your legs and nudge with your heels if you wanna go faster. These horses are super well trained so you shouldn’t need to kick, or be loud with them at all. Just use a clear voice,” you paused, “We should probably do a couple laps around the arena first before I take you guys off-roading,” you laughed, “Follow me.”
Admittedly, you were pretty impressed at how well the guys were picking it up. A lot of it had to do with the horses that they were riding, but still. It was the first time you could ever remember Bishop seeming out of his element and you had to admit that you found it amusing. Angel and Gilly found themselves struggling together while EZ practically rode laps around them, of course.
“Show-off,” Angel said with a laugh and a shake of his head as he shifted slightly in his saddle.
“You’re just mad because I’m already good,” EZ chuckled as he made his way over to where you and Taza were watching the rest of them.
Once you started making your way towards the trail, you and Coco found yourselves side by side. You glanced over at him and had to smile at how comfortable he seemed. For a man who seemed to be a little jumpy at baseline, he seemed really calm.
“I have to admit,” you said as you glanced back to make sure you didn’t lose anyone yet, “you surprised me a little bit with all of this,” you gestured to him and the horse.
He laughed, “Yea, I’m full of fuckin’ surprises.”
“You ride for a long time?”
He shrugged, “Not in a while. Started when I finished my four years. One of the guys who came back with me told me to try out equine therapy. Seemed kinda pointless but I really wasn’t in a position to be sayin’ no to anything—I was pretty fucked up. And it helped. Stopped when I started getting in with the club.”
You nodded, unable to hide how invested you were in everything that he was telling you, “Got it. That why the guys didn’t know?”
“Yea. Plus, they don’t gotta know everything,” he chuckled.
The topic fell by the wayside as the group of you continued on your little adventure. It was peaceful, and it was nice to hear all of them laughing and joking around with each other. You felt like you were constantly turning around to make sure that you hadn’t lost track of anyone, but you really didn’t mind it. It was hard to not be a little amused at how out of sorts Angel still seemed. The downside of being as tall and lanky as he was, is that it’s impossible to miss when he is feeling uncomfortable or out of his comfort zone. It was written all over his body language.
You looped around so you could land yourself next to him. You smiled over at him as he focused intensely on his reins, “Still getting the hang of it?”
“You guys make it look so easy.”
You laughed, “We’ve got years of practice. You’ll pick it up.”
“Gilly wants to know why he’s the only one that didn’t get a horse,” Angel laughed.
You chuckled and shook your head, “Mules are great, he’s got nothing to complain about. They’re strong, and smart, and a little stubborn but that’s just like the rest of you guys so it should be fine.”
“I know I’m not good at this shit,” he shifted slightly in his saddle, “and I dunno if I ever will be. But it’s nice to see you enjoying yourself like this. I don’t think I’ve ever really seen you like this.”
You smiled, feeling your face get warm, “Well, now you know,” you paused, laughing, “Plus I think this is one of the only times that I’ve been better than you at something.”
“Couldn’t let it be a sweet moment, could you?”
You chuckled, “Is this how you feel all the time with me?”
“I’m not better than you at everything, querida. Stop bein’ dramatic,” he smiled.
“Cooking and horseback riding are the two things I definitely have over you. And I’m holding onto those for dear life,” you laughed.
“I’ll let you have them. Just for you, I promise I won’t get any better at this.”
“For me?” you pressed a hand to your chest with a smile, “You’re too sweet.”
You nudged your horse onward so you could get back to the front of the pack. You’d ridden the trails hundreds of times but they never got any less beautiful. They were different than where you used to ride back home but the change was nice. The trail that you had taken them on was one of the easier ones—no crazy inclines or anything like that. It was a slow but steady ride up one of the smaller peaks that surrounded the ranch. The view from the top was beautiful—you could see for miles. You had a feeling that the guys were going to love it.
“We’re almost to the top,” you called back over your shoulder.
Within a few minutes, the whole group of you had made it to the clearing at the top of the peak. They were all letting out their own murmurs of approval and you felt so proud of yourself. A few of them hopped down, wanting to get a little closer to the cliff edge so they could look down over it. There was nothing but the sound of the breeze and the screaming of the birds while you all stayed there and took in the view. It was the most peace that they’d probably felt in a while.
“Pretty great, right?” you looked over at Angel, who had managed to guide his horse to they were right next to you.
He nodded, “Beautiful. Had no idea any of this was out here.”
“This is what I used to do with pretty much all of my free time when I first moved here, back before I really knew anyone.”
“You gave this shit up to hang out with us?” Angel chuckled as he gestured to the rest of the guys.
You laughed, shaking your head, “I didn’t give it up. I still come out here at least once every weekend, if not more during the week if work allows for it. I still make the time.”
“I love you,” he had a starry look in his eyes as he gazed over at you.
You smiled, “I love you too. Thanks for doing this—I know you weren’t really all that thrilled about it.”
“I’m glad I did. It’s nice to see something that means so much to you.”
After a few more minutes of lingering, chatting, and getting photos of everyone, it was time to complete the loop and head back towards the ranch. You were glad that the guys had pacified you and allowed you to do a little impromptu photoshoot of them with their horses—it was a moment that you wanted to remember. They were quite the diverse pack and you couldn’t help but to smile.
The ride back down was smooth. It was evident that for the most part, the guys were starting to feel more comfortable in their saddles. There weren’t as many, “oh fuck’s” said under their breath. There was a little more talking and joking going on and it made your heart feel fuller.
Cutting through the quietness of the trail was Angel’s voice, “Shit, fuck, oh fuck,” he wasn’t yelling but you could tell that he was worried.
You whipped your head around to see what was wrong, and you had to bite back your laughter as you watched the scene that was playing out. Angel’s horse had bumped up from a walk to a jog and clearly it wasn’t Angel’s doing. The panic that was on his face was priceless. Realistically, the horse wasn’t even going that fast, but it was enough to send Angel into panic mode.
“I’m just gonna fuckin’ jump off.”
You laughed, “Do not jump off. Just apply a little pressure to the reins and tell him to walk. He should slow right down. They don’t understand curse words.”
He did as you instructed, and sure enough the horse dropped right back down to a leisurely walk. You were trying not to laugh but the rest of the guys weren’t as kind and forgiving as you. You knew that that was going to be something that he wasn’t going to be living down anytime soon.
The rest of the descent was uneventful. The whole squad made it back down to the base of the trail unscathed. You hopped down off your horse and began to help all of them to do the same. You told them where to go and put all of their tack once they took it off, and also told them that if they could walk their horses for a couple minutes just to help cool them down it would be appreciated. It wasn’t the most intensive ride but it would still be good for them. Besides, it would be good for the guys and their legs too.
You were getting ready to bring your horse in when a girl came walking up to you, trying to politely get your attention. She couldn’t have been more than seventeen or eighteen. Her t-shirt and jeans were streaked with dirt but there was a giant smile on her face as she walked up to you and your horse.
“Hi, excuse me, are you Y/N?” her voice was quiet, shy.
You nodded, slightly confused, “I am. Everything alright?”
“Yea! I just, um, god sorry I don’t mean to be weird. I used to watch you race, though. I went to almost every NFR circuit event for a few years back when we still lived in Nevada. They said you moved but I had no idea it was here and I,” she stopped herself, “Sorry, I’m rambling.”
You shook your head, smiling, “Don’t be sorry. I don’t think I’ve ever had a fan before,” you laughed.
“Well that’s not true,” the girl laughed. She paused for a few moments, “Would it…would it be weird to ask if I could see you do a run?”
You raised your eyebrows, “A barrel run?”
She nodded excitedly, “Yea.”
You laughed, “I mean, I don’t see why not. I’m a little out of practice but I think we can still manage it,” you patted your horse on the shoulder.
“Oh my god this is so cool. The big arena inside is already set up—I just finished my lesson.”
The two of you walked together, your horse following behind without you having to hold too tightly on the reins. You listened to her gush and talk about riding and it made you miss what it felt like to be training for competitions. You didn’t regret stepping back from it to live the life that you have now, but there was nothing quite like that rush of adrenaline.
The guys had heard the entire interaction and all of them had since gotten their own horses situated so they could come and see what was about to happen. EZ and Angel were leaning against the side of the arena, their voices carrying in the echo chamber it created.
“You know she used to compete?” EZ asked as he watched you hop back up onto your horse.
“Yea, I mean, she mentioned it,” Angle replied, “Didn’t know that she was a fuckin’ celebrity, though.”
“Paparazzi is gonna show up any minute,” Bishop materialized next to them, chiming in with a laugh.
You settled into your saddle, getting both you and your horse positioned so that you could start your run. You could tell that she felt the shift in energy as the two of you stood at the entrance to the arena. You could feel her starting to get a little antsy, a little wound up. It had been a long time since you ran the pattern, but you had no doubt that it would be like riding a bike for the two of you.
As soon as you nudged her with the heel of your boot, your horse took off. You couldn’t stop the laughter that erupted out of you as she flew around the first barrel, gliding seamlessly into the turn. You could faintly hear the guys from the sideline over the sound of the wind in your ears. You felt your hat fly off your head and you didn’t even care. You’d almost forgotten how fun it was to neck-rein at that high of a speed.
You looped around the second barrel, and the third, and your horse all but flew down the center of the pattern as she ran out of the arena. You sat back in your saddle, trying to get her to slow down but you didn’t really want her to. It had to have felt just as good for her as it did for you—the two of you hadn’t done more than a light canter in a while and she was clearly itching to get out some pent-up energy.
Finally she slowed to a walk as you turned her around to head back towards the arena. The young girl came running out of the building with a huge smile on her face, your hat hanging from her fingertips.
“That was so cool!” she handed your hat back to you.
You hopped down off your horse with a smile, “That was the most fun I’ve had in a while, I can’t lie,” you laughed, “I’m glad you asked us to run it—that felt amazing.”
“Do you board here?” she looked at you expectantly.
You nodded, “I sure do. Here every weekend, pretty much. Not that we’re really training to compete anymore, but you know.”
“If we’re ever here at the same time do you think that you could give me some pointers?”
You nodded, feeling your heart swell inside your chest, “Absolutely.”
“Yes! Oh that’s so awesome. Thank you so much. I’ll, um, I’ll let you get back to your friends. But thank you so much.”
You smiled, “Of course. I’ll see you around.”
She bounded off, an excited spring to her step. You chuckled and shook your head as you started to lead your horse back to the barn so you could take off her saddle and bridle. As the two of you meandered, Angel and the guys all came out of the arena, looks of surprise all over their faces.
“What the fuck was that, querida?” Angel laughed as he shook his head in disbelief.
“What?” you feigned ignorance.
“When were we gonna find out that you know how to do all that?” EZ piped up.
“I told you guys that I ride!”
“That,” Angel threw his arm around your shoulder, “was not just riding. That was insane! You guys were fucking flying.”
“Shoulda seen how fast we could go when we were actually training for it.”
“Also, didn’t know that you were apparently a celebrity,” there was a smirk on his face as he pressed a kiss to your shoulder.
You laughed and shook your head, “Not a celebrity. The horse world is a small one.”
“You gonna be able to teach us how to do all that?” EZ asked with a laugh.
“Not a fucking chance,” you smiled over at him, “But you guys are more than welcome to come here with me any time.”
“Well now we definitely have to,” Angel said, “Gotta see what other moves you’re holding out on.”
“Oh,” you laughed, “you’ll see. Don’t worry.”

Starry Nights; Kim Hongjoong
The subtle vibration of my phone had me rolling off my bed, landing face-first on the floor. I groaned in pain, finding my way out of my blanket that I tangled myself in.
I found my phone on the side table, checking the notifications.
“Twenty five missed calls?!”
What in heaven's name? I sat up, fumbling with my phone. Pressing the phone to my ear, I waited for him to pick up.
“Hello?” Hongjoong’s groggy voice spoke through the phone.
“Hey, did I wake you?”
“Yes” he groaned. “But I’m glad you did, can you open your door?”
“What? Why?” I asked, walking towards my front door.
“Because I’m outside your house genius.” He huffed.
I rolled my eyes, ending the call. I undid my locks, opening my door revealing Hongjoong slipping his phone in his coat.
“What’re you doing here? It’s like,” I fished out my phone to check the time. “It’s two thirty?!”
He smiled sheepishly, before entering my house and shutting the door. “Yeah, sure come in I guess” I mumbled.
He held my hand, soft sparks travelling through my body. “Say, yesterday was our last day right?”
I furrowed my eyebrows. “Last day of what?”
Anxiety creeped through my chest, the thought of losing him was unbearable. I felt my heart momentarily stop when his fingers slipped away from mine.
Instead he leaned in closer, “I’ll tell you, but you have to do something with me.”
I raised an eyebrow. “What do you want to do?”
“Something crazy”
_________________________________________
“Is this your version of crazy?”
“Yes,” Hongjoong huffed, pulling out a shopping cart.
“You’re gonna get us arrested,” I hissed, fidgeting with my phone. “Hey, hey! Stop that!”
“What?” His little innocent smile made me want to protect him but his expressions contrasted his actions.
Little shit. “You were literally trying to get inside the cart.”
“Is that so wrong?” He mumbled. His eyes sparkling with innocence and naughtiness.
“It’s not wrong! But it is wrong when your trying to get in the children’s seat you idiot. Your thigh is the size of the seat! What makes you think you can fit yourself in there?!”
“Well you always call me tiny so,” he trailed off at the end, scratching his neck.
Oh my gosh. “I can’t even- get down from there!”
“Okay okay! Geez!” He mumbled out, hopping out of the shopping cart. I turned away from him, looking towards the parking lot to see if there were any witnesses.
A tug on my coat had me falling backward. Strong arms supported mine as I came face to face with Hongjoong. His lips barely brushed against my forehead and I gazed into his eyes.
“Falling for me already?”
A sly smirk played on his lips as he pushed me forward. I brushed myself, ignoring the heat on my cheeks. “Haha, very funny”
“I know right, a funny man is a gentleman”
I looked at him incredulously. “That doesn’t even make any sense”
“Nor does your standards” he muttered out.
“What?” I narrowed my eyes at him, and he raised his hands up in surrender.
“Just saying! Your ex was dumb to be leaving you and please, don’t lower your standards for anyone.”
I rolled my eyes. “My standard is Edward Kim. Do you really think I can find anyone?”
“You might not find Edward Kim. But you will find Hongjoong Kim.” He flexed his biceps, wiggling his eyebrows.
I huffed, pushing him away. “Gosh you’re impossible.”
“Impossible to resist?”
“Get out”
His hearty laugh bellowed through the parking lot. He walked behind me, picking me up.
“Put me down!” I shrieked.
He gently placed me inside the shopping cart, before kissing my forehead.
I looked at him shocked, yet he just winked back.
“Hold on tight!” He suddenly ran, hoisting himself up on the cart.
I yelled loudly, turning forward to see we were going on a slope. He’s gonna get us killed and arrested.
I screeched loudly as the cart tipped over, rolling down the slope. Wind whistled against my ears, slapping my face mercilessly as my hair tangled up. His husky laugh echoed in my ear, as he screamed in delight.
My eyes widened when I realised we were going to crash against the wall. Yet he had other plans. Hopping off at the last second, he pulled the cart towards him. Sending me flying.
I braced myself and I felt sturdy arms protect me as we fell to the ground. I heard the cart crash against the wall, a loud clatter that echoed through the parking lot.
“Ah, fuck” Hongjoong groaned in pain. I scrambled off, moving to sit beside him. “oh, shit. Hongjoong, are you okay?”
He stayed quiet for a minute, eyes closed. “Holy shit, did you die?”
He opened one eye, a choked laugh escaping him. “A good man always comes prepared” he sat up, removing his coat to reveal padded attire.
I smacked his arm. “Ow! What was that for?” He whined, rubbing his arm.
“That was for giving me a heart attack in the middle of the night” I huffed.
He got up, pulling me with him. “Okay now we go to my secret place.”
I looked at him, eyes wide. “What? You had a secret place? Why didn’t you tell me?”
He rolled his eyes. “Because it was a secret, dumbass”
I scowled. “Rude. But why are we going there anyways?”
He merely pointed at the sky. “No moon.”
“Yes I can see that,”
“That means, we can see the stars more clearly. C’mon”
He held my hand and led me towards his car, a short drive towards the outskirts of the city. We lived quite far from the main city, hence the drive was short.
I hopped out of the car, stretching my arms. “Oh nature! I missed you!”
He stepped around behind me, locking his car. “Stop being so dramatic, you went hiking last week”
I scowled at him. “Yeah but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen the stars”
“Why? You see them everyday don’t you?” We walked together, our steps in sync.
Confusion clouded my eyes as I looked at him. “I don’t?”
He scoffed, turning towards me. “Yes you do. Y/n, your eyes hold the galaxy. You know those days when stars aren’t visible? They’re hidden in your eyes. Safe kept because the stars are a little too shy to reveal themselves.”
A hearty laugh escaped my lips. “Since when did you become cheesy?”
“Ever since I spent my time with you” A disappointed sigh left his lip, yet he smiled.
I laughed at him, shaking my head. “God, you’re impossible.”
We kept walking, reached a small cliff. I looked at Hongjoong. “This place existed?”
“It always has existed, you just never looked for it.”
The dark blue sky was filled with specks of light, glimmering and sparkling. They flickered, sometimes outshining each other, and sometimes resting in the dark.
We sat together, laying on our backs. Trees surrounded my peripheral vision, the stars stealing the spotlight.
“You know,” I heard him whisper. “I’m glad you’re with me.”
I turned to my side, facing him. The minimal light of the stars accentuated his side profile. He turned, his eyes looking into mine. They reflected the stars, and they gleamed with hope and love. He looked beautiful.
“What do you mean?” I whispered. I could feel my heart thump against my chest.
“You’ve always been there. When I had my first recording, when I produced my first song, when I failed my exams. When I,” His glassy eyes stared into mine.
“When I wanted to give up on my dream. I want to thank you for staying by my side, for such a long time. You’ve always given me hope, you’ve always been my strength.
Y/n, you’re my home.”
My breath hitched. Emotion laced his voice and his words lingered in my mind, echoing. A warm hand clasped mine as he scooted closer to me.
“Will you be the home I can trust? The home I can return to whenever I’m down. The shelter I stay with when it’s gloomy, the strength I need for my day. The hope I need to keep going.”
He hesitated, inching closer to my face. “The person I can be myself with? My person?”
I smiled, closing my eyes. I leaned in close, pressing a kiss against his forehead.
“Now I know.” I whispered. I brought my hand up to his face, gently brushing his hair.
“Today’s the last day of us being friends and the first day of us being a couple.”
He chuckled, his eyes turning into crescents. “That’s right. Thank you for being mine, y/n.”
“Being yours is the best thing in the world Hongjoong.”
Under the starry night, we shared a small kiss. An indescribable feeling that lingered with me even after our lips left each other. Cold air brushed against my lips and I wanted nothing more than to warm them up with his.
He pecked my lips. “I love you,”
I smiled at him, relief clouding my eyes.
“I love you.”
