MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERD, 1783 by THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH
In MOUNTAIN LANDSCAPE WITH SHEPHERD, a shepherd looks after his sheep on the edge of a pond surrounded by both hilly and mountain landscapes. Beyond the trees, the background becomes more pastel in shades of blues, purple, yellows, and greys that subtly blend the mountains into the cloudy sky.
This landscape painting is a departure from the artist’s earlier naturalism with more precise locations. This was a deliberate change of direction that went against the wishes of many artists, including his opponent, JOSHUA REYNOLDS, who continued to adhere to traditional techniques of practice with respect to subject matter.
The story of how this painting came to be follows an interesting technique that GAINSBOROUGH employed to create a model landscape within his studio. He used a variety of materials, such as cork and sand, clay and moss, and even vegetables like broccoli. Thus, GAINSBOROUGH was able to see the simplified versions of major natural elements in some of the most mundane organic objects around him

Thomas Gainsborough British, 1727-1788 “Penelope, Viscountess Ligonier” 1770 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by @robertpuffjr Artistic tools and sculptures surround Lady Ligonier, suggesting her cultural sophistication. However, beyond this aspect of refinement Gainsborough has represented Lady Ligonier, with her hip thrust outward, in a pose of great self-confidence and with more swagger than her husband, whose companion portrait hangs nearby.
