So last night I was thinking of the best way to explain asexuality - you know, as one does - and I had an epiphany.

Think of a food you genuinely DON'T LIKE I will use as an example chicken feet (I don't have anything against them, I just need to make a point; don't want to offend anyone, it's personal taste).

SO: you really don't like chicken feet. You never feel the need to eat them, doesn't matter how hungry you are, they are never appealing to you, but there's nothing wrong with them per se: millions of people eat them in Asia and also many older generations all around Italy and probably so many more. But if you think about them, you are sure you don't like them. You can go your whole life never feeling the need to taste them, you're good and you KNOW you're good, there's so much else on the table! Someone before deciding they don't like chicken feet may decide to try them, someone just don't even like the thought of it, they don't like and that's all.

One day, maybe, you come across a restourant that has an AMAZING recipe for chicken feet, you know you don't like them, but the color, the smell, the other ingredients are just... *it* and you try them. Maybe you like it! And you may go to that restourant to eat them everyday, or every time you get the craving. You still don't like chicken feet, everywhere else they are not you thing, but that ONE place had this whole recipe where are perfect in and it works!

So basically, chicken feet are not you food, you love so much more food in that restourant and this place is so good for you, that even them are nice and inviting.

You may found that restourant, you may not, you still don't like chicken feet everywhere else, but have so many more food you like and you're just as fine!

That's basically it, that's asexuality.

You may find someone who you like to have sex with, it does not make you any less asexual, most asexual don't find someone like that, but they can still fall in love if they are the type to, one person with a good recipe doesn't change who you are and who you feel you are. Your experience is still valid 💜🤍🖤

thinking abt this tiktok i saw a while back where an older sister was making fun of her younger sister for insisting that dazai and chuuya bsd were just friends after watching dead apple and like.

while on the one hand i Get It and i ship skk with my whole life, on the other hand i was once a teenager who was really put off by the idea of romance in general but who nonetheless wanted to believe that someone could still love me with that kind of ferocity, and i really clung to those desperate best-friendships that crop up in so much media, and idk. sometimes i think when fandom belittles the possibility of "a platonic explanation for this" they are 1.) very much leaving aromantics out to dry and 2.) just. really limiting the scope of just how intense platonic love can be.

and also i mean. idk why everything always has to be either/or. you can ship a dynamic romantically and also enjoy them platonically you know. the two are not mutually exclusive. i do it all the time. really not hard. that's the nice thing about a little ambiguity.

In hell everyone knows his reputation and doesn’t even try to fuck with him. But I think human Alastor had to deal with a lot of bullshit and a lot of uncomfortable situations for the sake of fitting in. A lot of “okay if I do this then maybe they wont leave yet”. I think when he does have sex with reader, it’s from a place of just intense emotion about feeling accepted and seen as a whole image and not the mirage he casts out into the world. He twiddled his thumbs, reading through his friend’s groupchat.

Lisa: DAMIAN?! LUCAS?!

Lisa: HELP!????

Damian: I’m hanging out with Cameron, calm down!

Lucas turned his phone onto silent and rested his head onto the table. He always gave Lisa advice on how to deal with her crush, Carly. But he felt like a fraud.

She gave him a skeptical look before answering. “Yes, I’ve liked many guys before. But right now I’m taking time to work on myself and school. If I wanna get into a good college, I’ve gotta work.”

“So you’re not interested in being in a relationship-“

“Currently.”

“-currently. But you’ve still felt that desire before with some guys?”

She nodded. “Yes.” She grasped his hand. “Where are you going with this?”

“I.. I’ve never really.. felt like that.”

“Like what?”

“Romantic.”

She stared at him for a moment. “Never?”

“Nope.”

“Natta?”

“Zilch.”

“Never even in primary school when you had those pretend weddings on the playground?”

“Nope. Though I was the priest for one of those.”

“Well I’ll be..” She rested her chin on her hand to study him for a moment. 

“What about sexual?”

The word hit him like a freight train. “HUH?!”

“You know.. watching a movie and a girl or boy comes on screen.. maybe close ups on their assets.. maybe even during a sex scene..”

With each word, he felt his face grow hotter and hotter. “STOP! This is making me uncomfortable!”

“So you’ve never experienced that?”

“NO!!”

He buried his face into his arms to hide his embarrassment. Izumi studied him for a moment before chuckling softly. “白痴. I think I see what’s going on.”

He lifted his head ever so slightly, still red. “You do..?”

“Yep.. I think you’re aroace.”

He stared at her fore a good minute. “I’m what now?”

“Aromantic asexual. Meaning you don’t experience romantic love or desire and you don’t experience sexual attraction or desire.”

He let the word float through his head for a moment. “Aromantic asexual..” he said out loud. He then shook his head to snap himself out of the trance. 

“But.. how can I not experience that?! Everyone experiences that. With Damian in a not-so-secret relationship with Cameron and Lisa’s crush on Carly! What would that make me?! A.. a robot..?”

He didn’t realize he had stood out of his chair until Izumi helped him sit back down. “Dummy. No, it doesn’t. Do you care about Damian and Lisa?”

“…Yes..”

“Case closed, you’re not a robot!”

“But.. but.. how can we still be friends? They’re always on about the person they love.. where does that leave me?”

“It leaves you as you..”

He looked at her anxiously. 

She chuckles softly. “You guys still have your friendship. Things like interests and hobbies and mutual care and trust. If your friendship is built on them just talking only about romance, that’s not a true friendship. But keep in mind that they just wanna vent about their own feelings right now. My brother is the same way with that Bok kid..” she murmured the last part under her breath. 

He bit his lip before leaning back in his chair and kicking his feet back and forth. “But in movies and tv, it always ends with them kissing or married and with kids! That’s what I’m… I’m supposed to do..”

She closed her eyes, thinking before smiling. “Be your own story.”

“…what?”

“Be your own protagonist. Quit living in third person. Make your own ending. Just because you have tons of suitresses doesn’t mean you have to end up with one. You can just keep living your life and they’ve got to respect that. You’re not a prize. You’re Lucas.”

She gently ruffles his hair. “You don’t have to feel guilty about any of that.”

He chuckles and stands up. “I’ve gotta think about all this.”

She nods. “Go ahead. And if you arrrrre… QPR?”

“QP-what now?”

She laughed and playfully shoved his shoulder. “I’ll tell you another time. Now go home Lucas..”

He smiles at her one last time before turning to leave.

That thing you said about Bruce Robinson stating that Withnail and Marwood not having girlfriends, because they are poor. That’s really funny and it does make sense! However, it’s really noticeable, if you’re used to forced heterosexual references in buddy films, that women as a whole are never mentioned by the two, never mind attraction to them. The closest we get to this are pictures of women in their walls, but most of these are press photos of actresses. As Withnail and Marwood are thespians, it looks like their interest is an artistic, rather than sexual. And as you pointed out, the only sort of attraction referenced is homosexual. As you rightfully said, Marwood comes across as almost absurdly afraid of it, but interestingly never asserts heterosexuality to compensate, as many characters in similar films do. I’m a big dummy when it come to reading films properly, but it’s interesting that while none of these things alone make Withnail and Marwood explicitly queer (gay, bisexual, asexual, etc), there is absolutely zero effort spent on trying to convince you they are straight. If it took an interview to bring it up, Bruce Robinson probably just did not think it relevant. Again, the relationship between them is treated with greater importance. Of course, we are not sure by the end that it is completely platonic, and I don’t know how intentional that was (definitely was on the part of Richard E. Grant) but the point still stands. Sorry, this is such a long message, I hope it makes sense!

Absolutely! Thank you so much for sending me this, you've given me an excuse to go off on a rant. I've put some of my own ramblings and scattered thoughts under the cut. Sorry in advance for a complete lack of coherence.

Totally agree that it's unusual for a buddy film to have Marwood simply deny he's homosexual, then not show any interest in women to prove his point. No aggressive assertions of heterosexuality or forced female love interest, hell, no mention of women whatsoever (Mrs Parkin doesn't count)

I know he's essentially Bruce Robinson's self insert, hence Marwood being sexually harassed by Monty, who was based on Franco Zeffirelli, the director who sexually harassed Bruce Robinson (sorry if I'm just saying stuff you already know here). But yeah, Marwood isn't an aggressively heterosexual character, which makes him very inviting for a queer reading, among the various other reasons. I mean....look at him. Tboy swag off the charts.

I could list all the queer codings and references in the film but we would be here forever. Don't even get me started on all the ways Withnail is easy to read as queer. But yeah, in summary, I agree with your point that the complete lack of heterosexual attraction in the film can support that queer interpretation.

That's a good point that the photos of women/actresses in their flat could be purely for aesthetic reasons because they're thespians.

As for Bruce Robinson's intentions.... There was an interview where someone asked if Withnail was gay, which Bruce Robinson and Richard E. Grant refuted (timestamp about 21:09). Here Robinson actually jokingly (?) says he thinks Withnail is asexual because he only loves himself.... asexuality isn't caused by narcissism, but hot take!

So, Withnail was never intended to be homosexual. Which is crazy to me, what with... Withnail being Withnail. There is no possible heterosexual explanation for that man's behaviour!! And it's telling that so many people have seen the film and thought he was gay. But good news! Paul McGann has made a lot of comments about Marwood and Withnail being "young marrieds" in his commentary of the film. Also, in this interview (timestamp 6:58) he says Withnail was probably in love with Marwood. Big win for the gays. Overall, Bruce Robinson did not intend for Withnail and Marwood to be read as queer, but everyone say thank you to Paul McGann. Thank you Paul McGann

(Goes without saying, the creator's intentions don't prevent people from interpreting the film the way they want to. Death to the author etc etc. I've always liked to see Marwood and Withnail as queer because that adds another layer of meaning and just....makes sense if you ask me. Their relationship is compelling, platonic or otherwise. I personally found that it doesn't make sense for either of them to be 100% heterosexual, and asexual or bisexual readings are really cool as well.)

(On that note, not sure if it's worth mentioning... I read here that Vivian MacKerrell, the man Withnail was based on, was bisexual. So. There's that. Bisexual Withnail 2023)

"They got the hint," you interrupted firmly. "Can we please stop this before all of us get kicked out?"

Stephen took your hand and squeezed it reassuringly. "I'm sorry you had to deal with their bullshit."

"We're right here," Lisa said, mortified.

"Their bullshit," Stephen repeated, not taking his eyes off yours. "I love you and if you're up for it, maybe we can go dance?"

"Even though you hate dancing?"

"You know you're always my exception."

When did you first start shipping MetaDede and what is your favorite thing about the ship?

A wonderful question! I am going to ramble about this for a bit if that's cool!

So I technically started shipping this after I first started making the Roleswap AU. When I decided it would be more fun to have Dedede and Meta as the main characters, I realized that meant that I would have to replace Mouthful mode somehow. When I started brainstorming the first Combo Mode, I did some research on their different battle movesets through the years to see how I could implement them.

That is how I found out about Kirby Fighters 2.

Yeah, I was late to the party! I wasn't really in a Kirby phase before Forgotten Land came out, so when I saw the Sworn Partners fight- and listened to their combined battle theme- and the way they directly supported and comforted each other in and out of battle???!??! Yeah it was over for me lmao.

My favorite part about it? Well one reason off the top of my head is how many opportunities it has for some ultra-concentrated fluff. I am way too asexual to create spicy content of any kind for any ship or series. But the sickeningly sweet potential of two old geezers who are powerful enough to defeat legendary enemies but are incapable of processing intimate emotions??? Pining idiots who don't know they're in love but will destroy planets to make sure the other is okay? That combined with the generally wholesome and sweet nature of the Kirby series is why I fell so deep down this rabbit hole, haha. Life can be hard and tedious lately, so the ability to conjure sugary feelings of characters in love when I need it has been so great, haha!

And hey, if I didn't like exploring the dynamic of the Sworn Partners so much, I might not have ever decided to make the Roleswap into a full comic!

I think this is a good opportunity to say romantic shipping is not explicitly a theme in the story, so I want to make it clear there is no romantic fluff or confession scene in the comic itself. I don't want to turn away people who don't ship this! I want this to be an adventure story about family and trust and creating your own identity.

What is a theme is the development of the Sworn Partners' relationship and how this grand adventure allows them to learn about how to trust each other more and balance each other out. So if you like their dynamic to the level it's portrayed in Kirby Fighters 2, that's about the level I'll be exploring with these two dummies and their adopted bunny rat chinchilla creature!!

...But if you do like shipping I will be including plenty of subtext to gnaw on. I mean, they hold hands multiple times in the game and indirectly kiss with a Maxim Tomato so I'm really just working with the content the series has already provided~ :)

feeling nostalgic, so I thought I’d share my story of how I came to be here, as an incest shipper. Up until now I have been too concerned with others finding out my identity to share my thoughts, but I think I am finally comfortable doing so.

The first incest ship I was into was pinecest back in 2017 (thanks to doublepines artwork) and I felt so guilty about it I deleted that blog. I still have the dummy e-mail address I used to create the account, though. That was my real first incest ship. I never would have gotten curious if it weren’t for anti-pinecest fans vaguing about the ship in the tags. I remember liking the taboo nature of the ship, and the portrayal of the forbidden love between the siblings as something that had some positive aspects (rather than the universally negative portrayals I had only ever seen in media at that point in my life.) After having that account for a short period, I deleted it out of shame and pretended it had never happened. 

Years later when I got into Jojo, I was enjoying part 4 and the fanart that came with it. I stumbled across some Josuhan ship art, and ended up feeling conflicted. At the time, I still saw ship art as something that can be immoral. Yet, I liked the bickering, frictional relationship between the characters, and imagining how it would transfer to a romantic context. 

Eventually I decided to make a separate twitter account for my problematic Jojo fanart indulgences, the Sarah_j0jo account which is now my main twitter account. (I stopped using twitter connected to my real name a long time ago.) I got into Josuhan even though it was an age gap ‘toxic’ ship, and then by proximity, because I figured if I was going to ship problematic things I might as well go whole hog on the matter, so I got into JotaJosu. To be truthful, I didn’t like it much when I first got into it, but the ship gradually grew on me. I found one of the most haunting fanfictions that I have read to date. The power imbalance between the older and jaded Jotaro and his young uncle Josuke felt like a very old story indeed, just put through the lens of fandom’s interpretation of the characters. 

Over time, I went back to using tumblr, but gradually I was becoming more comfortable with the idea of shipping “immoral” things. I became infatuated with Kusucest later in 2021, another frictional relationship, but this time between estranged siblings, both of whom were queercoded and one of whom was implied to have masochistic, incestuous feelings for the other on a purely physical level, the other implied asexual, forming a stark contrast. They captivated me, these two characters who were so different and yet blood related; so dependent on each other despite themselves, all their interactions coming in the form of violence of some kind, even when they had a positive outcome. 

I was fascinated by the fact that one was so thoroughly obsessed with the other, the other pretending they weren’t related whenever possible; this inconvenient, spiteful, competitive brother who so thoroughly messed up his worldview as a child by demonizing an integral part of him, his psychic powers. And yet, at the same time, the older idolizes the younger for what he is, and even loves him unconditionally. And the younger realizes that he is indebted to his brother (and by proxy his brother’s obsession with him). Despite everything, by the end of the story, Kusuo can’t seem to dislike him.

It’s a thoroughly dysfunctional relationship with plenty of themes to explore, and both of them grow over the course of the story, and there’s so many things about the characters that feel like contradictions and yet seem to work. I stayed quiet about shipping them because most of the fandom understandably wasn’t interested in imagining them together in a romantic or sexual context. The blog I ran was (or rather, still is) mostly focused on the characters and the story,  and the themes of friendship (all things that I still wholeheartedly love and appreciate about the show.)

It wasn’t until I got into Vijinx about a year later that I really decided, fuck it, this is fiction, and stopped seeing the matter as a two-sided issue. Instead, there’s people who are comfortable with it and people who aren’t (and it is a weird, uncomfortable hobby to have by definition.) I spent a very long time being uncomfortable with it, and yet drawn in nonetheless. But around early 2022 was the point at which I completely stopped seeing it as an issue of something that reflected any sort of real life morality, and embraced the idea that we as human beings will have dark thoughts and fantasies that don’t define us as people, no matter how much or how little we identify them as true.

Fast forward to this year, and everyone who follows my non-problematic tumblr accounts knows that I’m accepting of portrayals of complex characters and character relationships, both in canon and in fanon. I’ve attended therapy, spent invaluable time thinking about what it *really* means to be a good person, and read some really insightful books that made me rethink the shame I felt over ‘problematic’ shipping, more specifically incest shipping which I had by then realized I liked.

I figured out shipping was, for one, a harmless diversion and didn’t mean that I had any interest in doing anything that I wanted fictional characters to do. It’s a way to mentally put yourself in a difficult, undesirable or even dangerous situation without being harmed. I figured it was ultimately me trying to work through difficult questions and feelings, ones that weren’t actually directly related to incest at all, but instead reflected the ways in which people are alienated and ostracized from their true feelings and inner selves.

It’s about falling in love and feeling totally out of your depth and out of control because of who you fall in love with. It’s about the unspeakable taboo (what happens if other people find out how I feel?) and the way the entire world is against the feelings that seem inevitable to you, no matter how much you try to scrape them out of you. It’s all a potent metaphor for queerness and the feelings I’ve struggled with my entire life. Especially because there seems to be less and less stories in fandom these days that really dig into the psychological terror, the confusion, the guilt, the anxiety, cold fear and the repression that queer people go through (especially ex homophobic, and ex religious christian queer people) to accept their identities. 

On a deeper level, it’s about the shame itself; it really is. The shame I have been conditioned and taught to the point that I internalized it. The ways in which I am still discovering the power that unnecessary shame holds over me, deconstructing the ways it eats into my life as I take it into consideration with everything I do- scheduling my time, creating art, communicating with others, even simply using my own body as I eat or exercise or sleep. That shame is the root of so many psychological problems and so much miscommunication, not just in my life but in many people’s lives. It’s a much deeper shame than feeling; it’s the shame of being. 

Incest just happens to be the perfect vehicle to examine that shame. There’s nothing quite so universally shamed and condemned as incest, for its connotations with abuse and the inherent ‘yuck’ factor that nature, nurture or perhaps both has installed in humanity. 

If incest is about shame, then maybe cannibalism is about codependency, vampirism is about sexuality and lyncanthropy is about repression. So many dark tropes have a metaphorical quality to them. 

Literary metaphors are sometimes a hard thing for someone who is naturally somewhat literal minded like me to accept. But most of the time, even when an author means a story to be completely literal, there’s a metaphorical reading that can be found within. 

I just wasn’t consciously aware that I was looking for that in these stories for a long, long time.

Many fanworks are created by victims of some kind of abuse looking to understand that abuse better through the artwork. Some people are aware of everything they are exploring through their art, some aren’t, and some, (probably most) like me, don’t fully realize what they are exploring until they really dive in and let themselves have fictional experiences through fandom that aren’t restricted or unilaterally positive. I honestly believe that in some way, on some level, every person who creates art with dark themes is trying to understand something that happened to them, or someone else close to them in their lives. It just isn’t always exactly what they are creating art about. And it isn’t always life ruining trauma, but it’s something no less real. And of course it is enjoyable. Exploring human relationships through fiction is enjoyable, creating art is enjoyable; controlling the narrative and the outcome of the story is enjoyable. Examining it is an important step in learning about ourselves and the world around us, and in the healing process for trauma that allows us to make these difficult questions and emotions and construct them into something. It’s an enjoyable process, because it’s cathartic. 

And this isn’t the end of the journey for me, either. I have more art to create; more of myself to accept, more difficult bits of reality to understand. But I’m no longer shying away from the darkness of it. Sometimes the only way out is through. If I can’t handle reality, then it follows that I would include bits of reality in my fantasies which reflect some truth which I have yet to fully see. Constructing a story, oddly enough, helps me do that. By constructing the story I extract the unconscious things which I observe and make them conscious, and draw conclusions about them. And of course, what I create isn’t reality itself, only a meditation on it from my own limited perspective, injected with enough fantasy to make it something I can comfortably embrace. 

Finally knowing and understanding all of this has brought me some peace. I hope it brings you peace as well.

The most disturbing point that anti Zutarians bring up is that the two would work because of their different cultures. They argue that one of the reasons Maiko works is because they are from the same nation and similar class backgrounds.

Ok, wow, y'all are so right! People from different cultures falling in love with each other despite their differences? Crazy talk. Silly me! I'll just go and erase every intercultural relationship in the atla world, because they're obviously not going to work and were a mistake.

Sokka and Suki? Gone!

Korra and Asami? Forget it!

Sokka and Yue? They're from two different tribes on the other side of the world from each other, with a power difference no less, it could never work!

And finally, the most egregious offender, Kataang. Silly kids, intercultural relationships are obviously for dummies! Since Aang is the last Airbender, he should obviously just reproduce asexually, because no one from another culture could possibly love him.

See how silly this argument is? The show makes a point that learning from and appreciating the other nations is necessary to become whole, and Guru Pathik and the vine bending guy in the swamp made it clear that the differences between nations are an illusion, so get out of here with takes that edge towards xenophobia and racism. If you like Maiko, great, like what you like, but drop that part of the argument.
