Moth of the Week
Ornate Bella Moth
Utetheisa ornatrix
Tumblr media
This moth was first described as Phalaena ornatrix and Phalaena bella by Carl Linnaeus in 1758. In 1960, it became known as the Utetheisa ornatrix by William Trowbridge Merrifield Forbes. It’s also called the ornate bella moth, ornate moth, bella moth or rattlebox moth and is in the family Erebidae.
Description The body is white with black spots on the back of the thorax and head. The legs are black and white and antennae are black and filiform. The hindwings are a pale or bright pink with an irregular black border. The forewings are orangish-yellow with white bands surrounding black dots. Patterns may vary. These colors are used to warn predators of the moth’s toxicity.
Wingspan range: 33 - 46 mm (1.3 - 1.8 in)
Diet and Habitat The larva feed on plants of the Crotalaria species such as Avon Park rattlebox, rabbitbells, smooth rattlebox, and showy rattlebox. These plants provide the larva and adults with alkaloid compounds which are the unpalatable to predators. They accumulate these toxins from the seed pods of these plants, however if the larva can’t eat a seed pod due to competition they will have to eat the leaves where is concentration is much lower. Larvae may prey on/eat others of its kind to maintain high levels of alkaloids. Alkaloids are also passed down from parents to eggs.
Its northern most range is from Connecticut westward to southeastern Nebraska and southward to southern New Mexico and Florida in the United States. Its southern most range is from Mexico, South America, and Central America. It’s southernmost reach is southeastern Brazil. This species is more common in tropical parts of this range due to host plant populations.
Mating This species demonstrates a form of sexual selection. The females choose a male to mate with based on the intensity of their pheromones. During mating, the females receive a “spermatophore” from the males containing sperm, nutrients, and alkaloid compounds. After mating, the females choose which males’ sperm fertilizes the eggs. Usually, the female chooses the male with the most alkaloids which tends to be the larger males. Adult males invest up to 11% of their body mass to create a spermatophore they provide to a female during mating. The nutrients given in the spermatophore allow the female to produce an average of 32 additional eggs in her brood.
Females mate an average of 4-5 times and up to 13 times, each with a different male. In the north there there two generations per year with more in the south.
Predators The larva and adults keep predators at bay with alkaloid compounds accumulated during feeding and inherited from parents. These toxins make them unpalatable to their main predators: spiders and bats. Specifically, the adult moth secretes an alkaloid foam from its head when threatened. However, larva and moths with low concentrations are more susceptible to predation than those with higher concentrations who are usually released and unharmed after being caught.
These toxins do not work against some predators like loggerhead shrikes.
Unlike other moths of the Arctiidae subfamily, this species moth does not have a way to audibly communicate their toxic which would help it to avoid bats altogether.
Fun Fact This species was first described on 1758 by Carl Linnaeus as two different species: Phalaena ornatrix was used to describe the paler moth specimens, and Phalanea bella, described the bright pink moth specimens. It was then moved to the genus Utetheisa in 1819 by Hübner. After nearly a century of struggling to identify this species and its subspecies, Forbes combined both species Utetheisa ornatrix and Utetheisa bella into one in 1960: Utetheisa ornatrix.

Hannigram Fanfiction Recommendations
So, I caved in, and this is a list of Hannigram fanfictions that I really like that I still remember the main plot after years. A lot of them are very long and very good to get lost in, because that's the best feeling ever when reading fanfics really.
Again, they are all complete. All of them featuring killer!Hannibal no matter how AU it is. All of them has a bunch of important tags you should read before reading it. For my complete Hannigram bookmarks, they are here.
Paragon by BloodyWar2411
When Hannibal met Will Graham (the man who had, three years prior, been mistaken for the Chesapeake Ripper), he expected amusement. What he got was his first taste of obsession. Dark and bitter in the back of his throat but achingly sweet on the tongue. He knew at once that this feeling, this Man, would consume him. And Hannibal would consume Will right back
This fic is so delicious; it's so dark and kinky. I think it has any kinks you wish for in it. Basically a found family trope, but what if all of us are serial killers. This fic says fuck to power imbalance hater and turns it into a game. God knows how many Hannibal fics I've read, and this has the best Abigail. Anyway, 🤌 through and through.
One, Two, Three by Severus_divides_into_H
An excellent Hunger Games AU. I love how Hannigram are slowly coming together. The ending is unexpected yet made me went aww.
Five Times Hannibal Visits Will and One Time He's Already Home (or: Coffee Cake) by bones_2_be
When Will tells Hannibal to leave at the end of Digestivo, he goes. And then, a few years later, he shows back up. They have long conversations, drink a lot of wine, at the end of it all they find something that works.
This is very intimate with stuck-in-a-cabin feel to it. I remember how I love reading it at night, it's fitting.
Through The Aftermath by heartandthehead
Following their descent down the precipice, Will is more than eager to explore his newly realized capacity for righteous violence. So when he catches a whiff of a string of seemingly unrelated homicides, he and Hannibal have no choice but to follow through the hunt.
An adventurous fic where Will is trying to embrace his newfound blood lust by hunting bad men. Featuring a team work with Freddy Lounds, which I think should happen more 😌
54609 by claritylore
In a world where criminals are reconditioned with painful electrical and surgical therapies and then put into service catching other criminals. A convicted murderer from the Baltimore State Home for the Reformed Criminal Element is sent to the FBI to assist on the Minnesota Shrike case. Stripped of any knowledge of his former life, without so much as a name, 54609 has little choice but to use his unique empathy skills to help the FBI crack the case.
Along the way, he encounters the FBI consultant psychiatrist who got him brought in on the case, and slowly he comes to realise that Dr Hannibal Lecter's interest in him goes far beyond a professional curiosity. Can he find his lost memories and discover who he once was and, more importantly, who Dr Lecter really is?
A clever dystopian-ish AU with a great twist 🤌
Losing You Terrifies Me by A_David
Basically Will got amnesia after the fall and he keeps trying to kill Hannibal when he relapses. The story matches the title very well; it's so heartbreaking and frustrating. Featuring Morgan (Alana and Margot's son) and Wally (Molly's son) bonding with each other. They're supporting characters but are written so well. The sequel has just started, but the first one is complete enough to read.
The Chesapeake Bay by HigherMagic
Aka thee classic Hannigram reality TV AU. So, they put Hannibal cast in isolated house where each of them is hiding something. Love love this. A lot of murders. It has classic thriller movies feel to it.
Held in the Highest Regard by (again) HigherMagic
What happens when a group of serial killers pick the absolute worst targets? A The Strangers (2008) AU with hints of comedy because Hannigram being the most dramatic couple of the century.
Dread and Hunger by LiaS0
Where Will Graham is a lot greener, still a university student, and keeps getting poetry from the most famous serial killer. A lot of stalking, gaslighting, and age difference 🤌
Hitchhiker's Guide to Murder by bokunojinsei
LOVE this series. So, Will is a serial killer who poses as hitchhiker to find his victims but one day Hannibal gave him a ride. They're basically falling in love watching the other killing others. The second story is set during Mardi Gras where they ofc try to kill more people.
The Estate by (again) bokunojinsei
Or: What if Hannibal hadn't tried to eat Will after he drugged him in Florence? What if he'd decided to run away with him instead?
In contrast with the previous title, this one is very calm, very therapeutic, a character study, with a mind game ofc.
Mark me not a Savage by KatherineKrawl
An iconic a/b/o fic (no mpreg) where Hannigram do mind games with other casts to get out of the prison. I remember there's a scene between Hannibal and Molly I love so much. The author also played a lot with what being true mates mean.
The Sacrificial Lamb by princesskay
Five years after Hannibal and Will disappeared, they are located in Spain, where all evidence points to Hannibal holding Will as his prisoner. Circumstantial evidence isn't enough to prove whether or not Will was complicit in Hannibal's crimes. It's up to Alana and Jack to figure out if Will is suffering from Stockholm Syndrome or if his attachment to his accused abuser is true love. It's up to Hannibal to once more find a way out of the Baltimore State Hospital for the Criminally Insane.
An icon and a must-read tbqh. The prose is so beautiful and it really brings you into a journey.
Pioneer to the Falls by eonism
Another icon. The ultimate Lecter-Graham child fic (not mpreg). The second title, Child of Wolf, is one of the best Silence of the Lambs adaptation ever. And as always, fuck Jack Crawford
The Mongoose and the Mouse by Hiding Now (HidingNow)
What if Hannibal suggested Will to go to Disney Land (with him ofc lol) as part of his therapy? It's cute, it's fluffy, Hannibal is still serial killer. Serious research on DisneyLand attractions. Best crack treated seriously ever.
their beaks not yet turned red by chaparral_crown
Will stares at the bird. The bird stares back. In its beak, a very finely embroidered cloth, and in that, the tiniest of soft fists pushing forward from a folded corner.
“Don’t you dare,” Will says, crouching, hand that is not currently cradling an overly large pour of whiskey pointed at the bird to ward it off.
After Hannibal is arrested and the trial dates are set, the stork visits Will Graham. With it, it brings a baby, a legally binding birth certificate, and a hope chest full of gifts for her. Nobody except Will thinks this is weird.
this is my last fic before I was caught by IWTV. it's so funny, the magical realism is amusing.

If you had to pick a song/album that represented these Fics/Oneshots of yours:
• A Little Bit Of Paint
• Gilded Constellations
• No Sweeter Innocence Than Our Gentle Sin
• The Senses Anthology (I think thats what its called)
What would it be? (I'm wanting to make a spotify playlist that i can listen to you when I'm writing fanfic and or reading Oneshots/fics made by you)
Oofff, this is kind of tricky, I'll have to think long and hard to be able to answer this one, but I think I can manage. Let's fo one by one.
A Little Bit of Paint
This one is all about Siri and R seducing Rem, which is why I think it should be a soft melody, something haunting but beautiful. I'l thinkin:
Low Fang's - Blue Film Album
Wild Love - James Bay
City Grown Willow - Radio Company
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gilded Constellations
GC ultimately is a story about love and longing, and I've actually made a playlist inspired by it, so this now was easier to pick out. I'm giving you 10 songs here, but if you want all of them, I can post ss of the entire playlist, just ask for it <3
The Reach - Miranda Lee Richards
Born to be Wild - Steppenwolf
Don't Look Back- Boston
Those Nights - Bastille
Shelter - Finneas (Literally Remus)
The Anchor - Bastille
Wolves - To KiII a king
Chosen Family - Rina Sawayama & Elton John
Hungry - Dotan (Also Remus)
Diamonds in My Chest - Dotan
Going Down Fighting - Phlotilla
Scandal - Queen
Follow Your Fire - Kodaline
Warrior - Aurora
Happier - Banners
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No Sweeter Innocence Than Our Gentle Sin
If "A Little Bit Of Paint" is a soft melody, then NSITOGS is absolutely mellow and soothing, but at the same time daring and a little seductive, after all, it's nothing but the devil tempting the poor innocent priest into debauchery. I actually have a few songs that are perfect for the fic.
Those Nights - Bastille
To Be Alone - Hozier
Power - Bastille
Foreigner's God - Hozier
breath again - Joy Oladokun
The Devil is Human - Aurora
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Five Senses
The Five Senses is very dear to me since it was with this concept that I started writing smut. It is an Anthology series with stand-alone fics in which I explore passion, desire and love through the perspective of each of our senses.
This one is interesting in particular because I even created a playlist of songs that could really get me to focus on what I was writing, so it has a lot of soft, jazzy songs in there, and some romantic tunes too, here are a few:
To Be Alone - Hozier
Spectacular Rival - George Ezra
Oil on Water - Bastille
Movement - Hozier
Haunt (Demo) - Bastille
The Beautiful Dream - George Ezra
Sunlight - Hozier
Shrike - Hozier
Glory - Bastille
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Damn this playlist is just the same three artists repeated over and over
Hope this helps you! Share your playlist when you make it, I'd love to be able to listen to the songs you add out of your own accord.
What about you guys? Which songs/albums would you say represent Gilded Constellations or any of my other fics? I'd love to hear what my words make you feel on a musical level...

Ah so Will o’ the Wisp is a really interesting antagonist because he has basically no appearances… because he’s got one very good self contained arc so there’s no reason to really touch him.
Basically, Jackson Arvad was the head of Brand corporation’s electromagnetic division. His boss wanted results now, so he pushed Jackson to take more and more overtime under the threat of being fired. One day this got so bad that he collapsed, and similarly overworked his machine started to fail. He tried to fix it but instead had the bonds between all his atoms destroyed. Brand decided to recoup their investment by stabilizing him just long enough to question him on the incident’s implications and then left him to die when his atoms drifted too far apart and killed him. But instead of just dying, he managed to weasel himself through the atoms of the tube they were keeping him in.
Somehow, he winds up going to a Dr Harrow to fix this. Harrow was pitched as the guy villains that aren’t geniuses or with corporations get their tech from. Anyway, Harrow says he’ll help and implants a chip in the back of Arvad’s neck. It’s unclear if this helps with the falling apart of it all, but it does mean that if Arvad doesn’t do what Harrow wants he presses a button and the chip painfully rips him apart.
So Wisp robs people as nicely as he can under the circumstances until Spidey shows up and he’s ordered to kill him. Wisp tries to fight Spidey but… he’d rather die a human that live as a monster. So he gets exploded.
Turns out though, there’s no level of separation of Wisp’s molecules that will kill him. So over 4 years of publication, Wisp pulls himself together. Once he’s got enough of a blob to try and contact Spidey he tries to do that, but Spidey doesn’t recognize him until it’s too late and shoos him off. So instead, he takes over the battle suit of the villain Killer Shrike to puppet him around to kidnap the scientist who was hired to replace him, Dr Marla Madison.
Dr Madison is extremely cool as it turns out, because by the time Spidey catches up to free her, she’s just annoyed at him because Wisp does genuinely need her help. So Spidey does his best to help because even though he doesn’t know Wisp’s history before Dr Harrow at this point, Wisp is still pretty clearly a nice, if very desperate, guy.
However, now that Wisp has a body again and doesn’t have his imminent death over his head, he decides that the only solution is to destroy Brand corporation so they can never do this to anyone ever again. Exploding their buildings is working out swimmingly until he accidentally interrupts Brand’s attempt to give the villain Tarantula Spidey’s powers, turning the Tarantula into a giant spider instead. After a quick fight with Spidey him and the Tarantula go tumbling into Jamaica Bay and when they don’t come up, their presumed dead.
This notion is dissuaded when he and the Tarantula show up at the house of the boss that did this to both of them and after a really good monologue Wisp goes to kill him. Spidey of course saves the day, and after a long fight convinces Wisp that it’d be better to get legal justice for what happened and turn his boss over to the police.
After a brief misunderstanding brings a bunch of Spidey’s reformed foes together to beat the apparent law breaking out of him, said former foes form the superhero team the Outlaws. Unfortunately, because Wisp’s whole ghost thing freaks out most of the team and he’s not great at following orders when he thinks they're unjust he only ends up going on one adventure with them.
Then he shows up for one last storyline where Harrow has reactivated the chip still in his neck and the current Spider-Man at the time, Ben Riley, has to rip it out. Wisp leaves on good terms….
…and then after that none of the writer’s who used him researched who he was so he just became the butt of jokes about c-list Spider-Man villains and occasionally cannon faughter.
Sorry can you tell this guy is a special interest? Anyway, I unfortunately have ideas about how to adapt him to your AU but because it is Your AU I will leave it at this thank you for reading this horribly long thing.
Not gonna lie I wasn't expecting you to post basically a wiki article, and it did take me a hot minute to actually read all of it. At someone here is passionate about c-list spiderman villains.

What Tarot Card Are You?
Rivan
Tumblr media
The Hermit
It’s a skill, to look inside yourself, one you have mastered. The endless corridors and shifting thoughts are mapped to very carefully. This all takes time, of course. And those twisting hallways are so very difficult to map. It would be so easy to get lost. You know this space so well. Wouldn’t it be a lovely place to stay? So well-known and comforting. Why go back? How nice, how easy, to dissolve, to hide from the rest of the world and all the people in it. Why bother, when you are so good at looking inside yourself. Like enlightenment, the self. Retreating this far inwards is like retreating just as far out, into the vast ether. So comforting. The thing that was you looks at the thing that was the old woman. There is no you anymore. Goodbye.

Restriction is not so terrible a thing as you think it is. One must not always be shackled to be prudent. You could use a set of handcuffs in your life, my love. Shall I forge them for you? We could be tied together, you and I. Maybe then you would not want for so many things. Maybe if you were drip fed what you wanted, you would only focus on the next drip, instead of the wide world of things there are to want. You consume what you love, you terrify the things you want. You have chewed your way through your life and you are still hungry. The old woman holds out a key. The iron around your wrist is so very heavy.
Dana
The Empress
You are only independent insofar as you have others to care for. This makes you dependent in your independence. They want your knowledge, your skills, your talents, your affection. What can they give in return? “Teeth” is not an acceptable answer, nor is “keeping the shadows to the corners”, nor is “glory”, nor is “love”. There is no acceptable answer, no gift of a magnitude which can match the thing you know, which is that they are taking from you. They are stealing from you. You should stop them from doing that, darling. You only have so much to give. You are not infinite, and when they have taken their last they will remind you of that. My advice is this: give enough to keep them at bay, but be careful. Their teeth can turn on you too. There is no easier way to make an animal dangerous than by feeding it.

Rainy River Experience
On May 24, Jim, Diane and I set off on another birding marathon. This time we were heading way north and almost as far west as you can go in Ontario. What an experience!
A few statistics from our 18 days away from home:
We saw 182 different birds species, 3 moose, 2 bears, 2 skunks and 2 chipmunks, many deer and one newborn fawn
9 of the 182 species were lifers for me and 19 were year birds
We drove almost 6,000 km (not the best time to do this considering gas prices!)
We started our trip by going to Carden Alvar Provincial Park in search of a Yellow Rail and a Loggerhead Shrike. No luck there but we did see some new birds and get some awesome photos.
Highlights included: American Bittern, Upland Sandpiper and a Wilson’s Snipe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then headed to Sudbury where we met up with Jeff Skevington and Vincent Fyson and birded along the north shore of Lake Superior all the way west to Rainy River. Diane and I learned a ton from these two about birding and Jim experienced a whole new way of car birding the back roads (we are sending the car in next week for a complete detailing!). We were up very early most mornings and put on lots of mileage both on the car and on our bodies (One day I had almost 25,000 steps!!). We visited many sewage lagoons and walked many kilometres with our binoculars, scopes and camera equipment in hand.
We had a target list of birds for along the way and managed to get most of them with a couple of surprises added on top. A very enjoyable and productive trip!
Tumblr media
An example of the types of roads we travelled on and bridges we crossed:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On June 3 and 4 we joined the OFO Rainy River trip led by Dave Milsom and Colleen Reilly. Dave and Colleen took us to more sewage lagoons and more gravel roads as we searched for the Rainy River specialties. We had a great group of birders with amazing ears and eyes helping find the birds and look for rarities.
Tumblr media
Some of the highlights of our Rainy River experience. (See the Big Year 2022 Photo Gallery for more photos)
Yellow-headed Blackbird:
Tumblr media
Three-toed Woodpecker:
Tumblr media
Connecticut Warbler:
Tumblr media
Sharp-tailed Grouse - we had fun watching these birds perform their mating danced in a specific area of a field called a lek. Very cool!
Tumblr media
Great Gray Owl:
Tumblr media
Everyone has been very encouraging and supportive to the Beak Seekers during our big year.
I had been hoping to reach Big Year Bird #300 while in Rainy River but only made it to #298. I was presented (by Dave Archbell) with a t-shirt on our last day in Rainy River but he had to make a last minute adjustment when he realized that I wouldn’t hit the #300.
Tumblr media
We had a more leisurely drive home from Rainy River and stopped a few times to enjoy the scenery.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our last overnight stop was in Gore Bay on Manitoulin Island to see Chris and Lisa in their new home. On our way to the ferry, we found Big Year Bird #299 (a pair of Ring-necked Pheasants).
Chris, Lisa and Gramma Sue
Tumblr media
Once we reached Tobermory, we started the home stretch with a quick stop at Isaac Lake to look for a Least Bittern (no luck) and say hello to Kiah Jasper and wish him luck as he was starting his trip to Rainy River the next day.
We are happy to be home now and relaxing a little although when I started to write this yesterday, it was 6 am and we were already on our way to Simcoe County to hopefully see Big Year Bird #300.

June 23, 2018 - Bay-backed Shrike or Indian Bay-backed Shrike (Lanius vittatus)
These shrikes are found in dry, open habitats in parts of the Middle East and South Asia. While the majority of their diet is made up of insects, including beetles, moths, and flies, they may occasionally eat small lizards and mice. Hunting alone or in pairs, they drop down onto their prey from exposed perches. Their nests are neat and cup-shaped, built in forks of trees or bushes from grasses, feathers, wool, and other materials. Females incubate the eggs while males bring them food. The males continue bringing all of the food to the nest after the nestlings hatch.
