its 330 am, i have work at 11 am and have to be awame by 8, this is fine, heres more donna/angie/claudia thoughts

if claudia’s bones formed Angie, and claudia’s soul was attached to those bones, donna sharing her cadou with angie adda to the idea that angie’s personality being so vastly different from donna’s is because it isnt donna’s personality, it’s the personality donna looked up to and wished she had: its claudia.

donna is based on the folklore surrounding the weeping spirit haunting a desolate ground, the possession of dolls and the calls of the banshees.

donna was transformed after claudia’s death, and claudias canon death is 1996, at the age of 9 years old at most. donna was given angie after the fact, and given to miranda as a gift of her parents loyalty shortly after that.

miranda clearly let donna be raised in the house still, since the servants mention her steadily changing personality. which, as donna’s appearance change is never mentioned while theyre alive, leads me to believe miranda was performing more minor tests first. definitely looking at the young (likely 8-15 years old, at most) donna. The diary (in japanese text) says she suffered from extreme interpersonal fear as a small child, and i doubt it ever truly got better. The ‘gift’ seemed to be growing, and Donna started talking through Claudia. But Donna hadn’t received the Cadou yet, at least not fully, because if she had he would have seen her scar. he never mentions it.

also, something kind of concerning if you look at it too long. the part of angie’s face not made from the family crest? it looks like a younger donna. it looks like her dad might literally have deboned claudia’s corpse, and kept her face to preserve it in some way and use in angie. Meaning Claudia would be even more attached to angie.

which leads to this point: if claudia was the one actually speaking. the gardener says Donna was speaking through angie. Ventriloquists, most of the time you dont see their lips move when they speak. for all he knew, it was donna that was speaking, but the only time donna canonically speaks is when she forces a hallucination on ethan symbolizing speech. She does not talk, she’s nonverbal, and clearly miranda decided that was enough reason to claim her too ‘mentally ill’ to properly function as Eva.

Even in Miranda’s notes, she says Donna’s affliction with the cadou is extremely affinitive. If she were already disfigured from the cadou at that point, i doubt miranda would give such high prospects. she dissed all over cina for far less. i think the cadou disfigurement was after those notes were made, maybe miranda saying she’d offer donna more ability to spread the cadou to her dolls, not realizing what the cost would be.

and, maybe she didnt care, because claudia’s disdainful spirit, the only person donna actively listened to, was pulling her strings.

donna is the looming spirit, the haunting figure who’d been controlled and ignored all her life, and the only ones that cared either died or killed themselves. claudia’s death likely wasnt natural, and could have been a result of miranda’s experiments, thus making the likelihood that if angie’s made from claudia’s corpse, angie and claudia are one and the same all the more likely.

and donna giving angie most of her spirit with her initial transfiguring of power, would mean she gave most of her spirit, her power, and her mind to her sister, not a simple empty doll like her other dolls are.

thats why angie has the most power, and angie controls the rest of them.

and donna’s physical body is now too weak to do anything.

claudia could be steadily trapping donna into angie’s body with her, ensuring that they’d never be alone. And when Duke buys Angie off of Ethan, he’s getting the essence of not only Donna, but Claudia as well.

and one thing often stated in folklore

nothing is often stronger than the spirit of a deceased child.

Random Stuff #12: What is Simplified Chinese?

For people like me who grew up speaking and using Chinese in day to day life, the vast majority of us have at least a basic understanding of what Simplified Chinese is, but it wasn’t until some days ago when an English speaker asked me “what is Simplified Chinese?” that I realized not many people here understand what Simplified Chinese is. So, I’ve gathered some misconceptions I’ve encountered both in real life and online, and I will try to answer them in a concise but factual manner.

But first, let us talk basics. There are three things we must cover first before going into this topic. The first is the fact that both Simplified Chinese (简体中文) and Traditional Chinese (繁體中文) used today are modern standardized systems of written Chinese, as in both were compiled within the past 100 years or so (modern Simplified from 1935-1936, then again from 1956 and on; modern Traditional starting from 1973), and the two currently widely used versions of both systems were officially standardized in the past 50 years (modern Simplified current version standardized in 2013; modern Traditional current version standardized in 1982). However, since simplified characters already exist in history (called 简化字/簡化字 or 俗体字/俗體字/”informal characters”), and “Traditional Chinese” can be taken to mean “written Chinese used in history”, in this post I will use “modern Simplified/Traditional Chinese” or “modern Simplified/Traditional” when referring to the currently used modern standardized systems.

Second is the evolution of written Chinese. Usually when this is taught, instructors use examples of how certain characters evolved over time, for example one might encounter a linear diagram like this in Chinese class:

However, this diagram only gives a very general idea of how characters evolved from more picture-like logograms to the more abstract symbols we call characters today, and does not reflect the complexity of this evolution at all. To get into these details we will need to talk about Chinese calligraphy. In terms of the evolution of written Chinese, Chinese calligraphy--all those scripts like oracle bone script (甲骨文), bronze/Jinwen script (金文), Seal/Zhuan script (篆书/篆書), Clerical/Li script (隶书/隸書), Regular/Kai script (楷书/楷書), etc--they aren’t just calligraphy fonts, but actually change the way characters are written, and are representative of the commonly used forms of written Chinese at different points in Chinese history, as in the appearance of a certain script on a historical artifact can actually be used to estimate how old the artifact is. Below is a (very) rough timeline of when each script appeared and when they are most popular:

Oracle bone script/Jiaguwen (甲骨文): Shang dynasty (~1600 BC-1046 BC)

Bronze/Jinwen script (金文; includes Large Seal script/大篆): Western Zhou dynasty (~1046 BC-771 BC)

Seal/Zhuan script (篆书/篆書; sometimes called Small Seal script/小篆 or Qin script/秦篆): compiled in Qin dynasty by chancellor Li Si/李斯 around 221 BC, was the official script in Qin dynasty (221 BC-207 AD); popularity went down after Qin dynasty but was still in use for ceremonial purposes like official seals (the archaic meaning of 篆 is “official seal”, hence the English name); still in use today in very specific areas like seal stamps, calligraphy, logos, and art.

Clerical/Li script (隶书/隸書): appeared in Qin dynasty, became the main script used in Han dynasty (202 BC-220 AD); popularity went down after Han dynasty but was still in use; still in use today in specific areas like calligraphy, inscriptions/signatures on traditional Chinese paintings, logos, and other art.

Regular/Kai script (楷书/楷書): appeared in late Han dynasty, became the main script used in Tang dynasty and has been popular ever since (618 AD-present).

(Note: there are other calligraphy scripts like Semi-Cursive script/行书/行書 and Cursive script/草书/草書 that were never mainstream yet were also significant, especially in the case of modern Simplified Chinese, but I will mention them later so this won’t become too confusing)

So if we plug the information from the very rough timeline above into the linear diagram, it becomes this:

But wait! There’s even more! Because there is a thing called variant Chinese characters/异体字/異體字, which basically means that there have been multiple ways in which a character can be written (“one character, many forms”/一字多形), and these can come about as a result of homophones, personal preference of historically significant people, historical trends, mistakes in the past that stuck around, or the result of stylized scripts like Cursive script/草书/草書, which simplifies and connects strokes in a liberal manner. The reason Cursive script is important here is because of the logographic nature of written Chinese, meaning the simplifying or connecting of strokes actually changes how the character is written. Because of this, 马 and 馬 were forms that have already existed before modern Simplified and modern Traditional were compiled. A diagram that takes variations and evolution into account should look something like this:

And since the above diagram did not take Cursive script into account, here’s another picture of a myriad of scripts/fonts (not in chronological order) that includes 馬 in Cursive script (mostly on bottom left):

Now you may have an idea of where modern Simplified and Traditional Chinese came from: they are both compiled from existing variants. Since both modern Simplified and modern Traditional are supposed to be standardizations of written Chinese, they each set a single variant for each character as the “standard”. Modern Traditional Chinese kept the more historically mainstream 馬, and modern Simplified Chinese substituted it with the simpler variant 马. Taking all of this into account but still keeping it concise for our topic here, our linear diagram from the beginning should be modified to look like this:

And that’s just an example of a single character. This evolution diagram can differ depending on the character too, due to there being other rules for simplifying characters. This is why standardizing written Chinese is an immense amount of work, but once standardized, the written language will be streamlined and much easier to use in communication.

Finally, we are ready to clear some misconceptions.

About Common Misconceptions Regarding Modern Simplified Chinese:

“Simplified Chinese replaced all Traditional Chinese characters”. Untrue. Modern Simplified Chinese only standardized 2274 of the most used Chinese characters and 14 radicals with simpler variants. That’s really all there is to it. For reference there are a total of about 60,000 Chinese characters, and about 3,500 of these are deemed to be often-used characters; so only ~3.7% of all Chinese characters and ~65% of often-used Chinese characters are simplified in modern Simplified Chinese. Play around with any online tool that can switch between modern Simplified and modern Traditional, and you will find that many characters stayed the same.

“Simplified Chinese is the opposite of Traditional Chinese”. Untrue. Modern Simplified Chinese is just a simplified and standardized system of written Chinese. Modern Simplified Chinese and modern Traditional Chinese are not “opposites” of each other at all, just different standardized systems serving different purposes. Modern Simplified was compiled with ease of use in mind, since Traditional characters can be time-consuming to write, for example imagine writing 聲 (sound) when you can just write 声 instead. Also back when Simplified was being introduced to the public, a huge part of the population was illiterate, especially farmers, poor people, and women, so Simplified Chinese was a great way to quickly educate them on reading and writing, and to improve efficiency in all aspects of life. Knowing how to read and write is key to education, and education is a must if people's lives were to be improved at all.

“Simplified Chinese is Mandarin”. Untrue. Mandarin is a spoken dialect that came from Beijing dialect, and both modern Simplified and modern Traditional Chinese are modern standardized systems of written Chinese. One concerns the written language and the other concerns a spoken dialect.

"Simplified Chinese was invented by the Communist Party". Untrue. As mentioned before, most characters used in modern Simplified Chinese are already present in ancient texts, artifacts, and inscriptions as variants. Apparently the only character simplified by PRC was 簾 (blinds/curtain), which became 帘 in modern Simplified Chinese. History wise, Republic of China was the first to start compiling Simplified Chinese in 1935 and introducing it to the public, but this was called off after 4 months. PRC modified and built on the original plan, and introduced it to the public again starting from 1956.

"Simplified Chinese is to Traditional Chinese as Newspeak is to English in 1984". Completely untrue. Modern Simplified Chinese is just a simplified way to write commonly used Chinese characters and does not alter the meaning of the characters. There are some Traditional characters that are combined as one simplified character in modern Simplified, but the meanings are not lost or altered. For example, 發 fā (development) and 髪 fà (hair) are combined as 发 in modern Simplified, resulting in 发 having 2 different pronunciations (both fā and fà), and each of these pronunciations carrying their original meaning. The meaning of neither 發 nor 髪 was lost, 发 will just have a longer dictionary entry.

"Simplified Chinese is a huge change from Traditional Chinese". Only partly true in that it is a change, but it is a change justified by the evolution of written Chinese throughout history. The origin of most modern Simplified Chinese characters come straight from history itself, since many characters had alternative ways in which they were written (sometimes for convenience), for example these characters below. Each row contains different forms of a single character (smaller characters indicate what time period these variants are from; ex: 汉碑 means the variant is from a Han dynasty inscription).

In reality, written Chinese has always been standardizing itself. Less-used variants become forgotten over time, sometimes only rediscovered through archaeology. Besides, effective written communication does partly rely on standardization of the written language (imagine everyone writing in the various variants...how horrible would that be?). Modern Simplified just took this one step farther and made some characters easier to write.

“Traditional Chinese is no longer used in Mainland China”. Untrue. Modern Simplified is the commonly used form in Mainland China, but Traditional is still used in a variety of places, such as on store signs/brand logos, particularly for stores/brand that are old. For example the old Beijing brand 天福号 below (est. 1738). On their logo, 天福号 is written as 天福號 from right to left, which is the traditional way of writing horizontally.

Traditional Chinese is also used in the logos for many universities in China:

Another way in which Traditional Chinese is commonly used in mainland China are personal seal stamps. Often times when people carve seal stamps for personal use (for example showing ownership on artwork they created or collected), they would put their name/courtesy name/nickname on the seal stamps in Zhuan/篆 calligraphy font, and Zhuan font use Traditional Chinese. Of course, the ways in which Traditional Chinese is still used in mainland China isn’t restricted to these two examples here. There are other places where Traditional Chinese is still used, such as traditional paintings/国画, calligraphy/书法, and many many more.

“People who grew up reading Simplified Chinese cannot read Traditional Chinese”. Depends on who you are asking. I grew up learning only modern Simplified, and I can read Traditional/modern Traditional Chinese just fine without having to actually learn it from anyone. Most people who grew up with Simplified Chinese should be able to read at least some Traditional without help. There are some people who say they can’t read Traditional without taking the time to learn it, but I doubt they’ve really tried, to be very honest.

And that’s it for the misconceptions!

My personal philosophy regarding modern Simplified Chinese and modern Traditional Chinese can be summed up as 识繁写简, or basically “know how to read Traditional and know how to write Simplified”. In a way, knowing how to read Traditional is a bit like knowing how to read cursive: a lot of history could be lost if we completely stopped using/learning about Traditional Chinese, but to meet the fast pace that modern life demands, I think modern Simplified Chinese is the more convenient choice for writing for day-to-day purposes. Since quite a few posts on this blog concern history, you will find that I usually use both Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese for historical things, since modern Traditional Chinese is closest to what people used in the past, and modern Simplified Chinese is more often used now. If it appears that I didn’t put modern Simplified and modern Traditional side by side, that usually means either the characters stayed the same and there’s no need for me to type the same thing out again, or the topic does not call for both to be shown.

you stifle a chuckle at the blush spreading across his face. jay’s hand brushing against yours sends an embarrassing amount of shivers down your spine when he hands a plate out for you to clean.

your shoulders occasionally brush against each other as you work side by side to clean the various dishes. “how did you all let it get this bad in the first place?”

“i guess it’s hard to convince a group of teenage boys to clean.”

“speak for yourself,” you tease. jay’s laughter brings a soft smile to your face as you finally set the last bowl aside to dry.

“thanks for the help,” jay smiles. “i really appreciate it.”

“no problem.”

“can i make it up to you sometime? like… maybe over dinner?”

you softly smile as you nod. “i’d like that a lot.”

“please, hyung is fine,” you chuckle, waving off his overly formal demeanor. “i’ve actually been meaning to ask for your contact information for a while now. i’d love to work together on something sometime.”

“yeah, of course!” jake says as he grabs his phone from his pocket. he hands it to you with a nervous smile, watching as you input your number before handing his phone back to him. “it was lovely to meet you. maybe we can meet up sometime?”

jake blushes slightly but eagerly nods. “i’d like that.”

“so, how does it feel to be an official idol?” you tease, gently brushing your shoulder against his.

“shut up,” sunghoon chuckles, playfully rolling his eyes.

you fondly smile at him, brushing a hand against his cheek to tilt his face up so he’s looking at you. “can i take you out sometime? like… on a date?”

sunghoon’s blush deepens even more. “are you sure? you’re an idol - my idol. i- what if i mess this up?”

“hoon,” you whisper. “i like you. nothing else matters to me.”

he pauses, looking into your eyes for a few seconds, almost like he’s searching for any hints of doubt. finally, he leans in to press a chaste kiss against your cheek. “i like you too. and i’d love to go out with you.”

you pause as small ripples of applause pass through the group, making you chuckle. “i’ve grown close to all of you, but there is one person i want to call out in particular. sunoo, it’s been an honor to watch you and your confidence grow. i can’t wait to see what you'll accomplish in the future. you’re a great idol, sunoo.”

another short wave of applause makes you chuckle slightly. a deep blush spreads across sunoo’s face as he brings a hand up to his face in an attempt to hide his still-flowing tears. “thank you, hyung.”

you softly smile to yourself, quietly stepping closer to him. you lean against the wall as his voice echoes through the hallway. you wait for him to finish singing the verse before you make your presence known. “wow,” you compliment.

jungwon’s eyes widen at the sight of you; his cheeks burn a bright red in his embarrassment as he scrambles to his feet. “y/n-sunbaenim,” he says as he quickly bows.

“oh, there’s no need for formalities,” you chuckle as you reciprocate the action. “it’s nice to meet you…”

“jungwon.”

“jungwon,” you repeat, letting the name easily roll off of your tongue. “nice name. i like it.”

“thank you, hyung.” he nervously laughs as he bows.

you softly smile at his flushed cheeks as you take a small step closer to him. “hey, i meant what i said earlier. your voice is incredible. really.”

“ah, thank you,” jungwon repeats.

niki pauses in the middle of his routine when the practice room door slowly cracks open just enough for you to enter the room. “y/n-sunbaenim,” he greets as he bows.

“niki,” you smile, reciprocating the action. “are you practicing?”

he nods, glancing back at his reflection in the mirror. “i was just trying to get the steps down perfectly before our performance tomorrow.”

“do you mind if i help?”

“not at all.” you softly smile as you walk over to stand beside him, watching his steps. each movement is sharp and controlled as he rehearses through the song.

“wait,” niki pauses when you object, standing still as you carefully reach over to maneuver his body into the correct position. his face burns brightly as a flush spreads across his cheeks at your gentle touch against his body. “here.”

“thanks,“ he murmurs.

you stifle a small chuckle at the deep blush on niki’s cheeks. your arm remains gently wrapped around his waist as he turns to face you. “we should do this again sometime,” you whisper.

“yeah,” he nods. “i’d like that.”

Franktisek Markov is the Darklord of Markovia, a heavily forested island with the scatterings of a few small, abandoned villages reclaimed by nature; “Fran’s” manor; and the aptly named Monastery of Lost Souls.

Franktisek grew up on a small pig farm outside of the village of Vallaki in Barovia. This was after von Zarovich became a vampire and started all this nonsense with these Misty prisons. He married Ludmilla, a young woman from Vallaki and opened a butcher shop there. Franktisek enjoyed the act of slaughtering his pigs, though the act itself was not enough for him and in time he began to experiment on the animals. He performed amputations, skin grafts, glandular injections and became fascinated with the results. I’m not sure where he learned the art of surgery…it is not as if Barovia is known for its education system nor pig farmers for their collection of books. I digress, when his wife discovered his grim experiments, she threatened to leave him and inform the villagers of what he was doing.

Overreacting to this threat, Markov made Ludmilla his next experiment and performed numerous surgeries on her over the course of three days. She died on the third day, her body now resembled an animal more than a person. However, once the villagers realized the truth, they chased Markov into the Mists and Markovia formed.

The Markov Manor was eventually claimed by Thaani refugees from Bluetspur and the echoes of Markov’s past deeds upon Ludmilla had some…well, let’s just say interesting effects on the Thaani.

Before the Grand Conjunction, Markovia lay where the Shadow Rift now lies. Now Markovia has been transformed into an island west of the township of Ludendorf in Lamorida on the Sea of Sorrows. This transformation of Markovia is quite suitable for our transformed Darklord. Once a man, Franktisek is now a beast with the face of a man, forever searching for his lost humanity.

Franktisek continues his experiments on Markovia. Capturing various species of animals and transforming them into beasts with human-like features. Every attempt he sees as a failure as they have not sufficiently shed their animal side. These “Broken Ones” roam the island and worship Franktisek as a god, referring to him as “the god who walks among us”. Though I believe the Vistani have a better name for him: “Master of Pain”.

Any humanoid that finds themselves on Markovia will likely end up in Markov’s lab, where he transforms them into humanoids with beast-like features. He does not use any anesthesia, so these ‘surgeries’ of his are quite...memorable.

Markov can take on the form of any beast, though always retains his human head and face, which is as ridiculous and terrifying as it sounds. He tends to take the form of an ape, believing it makes him look more human. Perhaps there are no mirrors on the island so he can see how much that is not the case?

Ok so I'm literally going through the five stages of grief after what happened with moiraine and siuan in ep 207 of wot and I just can't stop thinking...

I haven't read the books but I know basically what happens to them in terms of relationships and all but like,,, I'm PRAYING that it won't happen on the show bc like if you think about it, Moiraine and Siuan have never been in a relationship in the books. Yes, it was heavily implied that they had something going on but from what I've heard it's treated almost like a "phase of self discovery" or smth like that, nothing serious at all

So I'm like why the FUCK would they make them cannon wives for like DECADES, planning their future together and all and literally BUILDING UP THEIR RELATIONSHIP LIKE THAT just to separate them the second time they show up??????? Srsly I'm going feral and just won't accept that. PLEASE RAFE JUDKINS DO SOMETHING, YOU PROMISSED!!!! YOU CREATED A DEBT WITH THE GAYS!!!!!!

Tbh I'll risk saying that if they plan on ending their relationship abruptly like that it would be just better if they never made them girlfriends in the first place.

thoughts as i rewatched mischa on the oc pod

these are mostly the thoughts i sent to my friend in real time lol i cannot help the stream of consciousness when it comes to this podcast episode apparently (here's my original thoughts pre-revelations)

funny how she says 17.5/18 at the top

seems that’s the age range she’s really latched onto, especially as she was 16 when the talks with McG really started and they filmed the pilot not even two months after she turned 17 (aka she's still aging herself up which is... interesting)

i'm reminded of peter gallagher on the podcast saying he was scared for mischa right from the beginning and how they all had a duty to protect her. and rachel saying mischa was "seasoned" because she'd been in movies and knew how to order a latte. and peter was like "she was still 16"

they keep referring to the hermosa party as manhattan beach (unless i’m the one messing up)

My Recommendations For Doraemon Episodes (2005 Anime Edition)

if u know me u know i'm far from being the biggest fan of the 2005 doraemon anime. howeverrrr i don't hate it either cuz i'm a fan, so here's my fav episodes from the series!

p.s. one of my old posts contains many episodes from the new anime, so they won't be listed here bc i don't wanna be repetitive, not bc i don't like them enough!

☆ The Horrors Of Gian's Birthday (2007)

this episode is a birthday special as u can tell from the title and it's also about 20 minutes long, orrrr if we're being precise, it's made of two 10-minutes-long episodes. at the beginning it pisses me off cuz nobita and shizuka initially forget gian's b-day and once suneo reminds them, all 3 of them and doraemon do the most to avoid attending his party. gian isn't the best person on the show and he's full of flaws but having fake friends is horrible...

「恐怖のジャイアン誕生日」 #91

☆ Nobita's Survival Trip (2010)

this episode is longer than usual, about 20 minutes long and it's about a school trip who suddenly turns into a nightmare for doraemon (don't ask me why he was at a school trip just watch the episode) and the 5 kids (yes, dekisugi was with them, too).

nobita needs to finish his homework faster, doraemon wants longer legs, suneo wants his arms and hands to be ladylike, gian wants to know what it's like to be skinny. so they respectively switch head, legs, arms and torso with shizuka. she rightfully gets her body parts back in the end, but i wish doraemon did something about suneo's arms, he seemed truly unhappy with 'em. 💀

the episode starts with suneo and a model (or a woman who works in the fashion industry) talking about current fashion trends and then suneo starts laughing at nobita for not knowing shit on the subject. obviously, nobita initially claims he doesn't give a fuck and a couple minutes later he's crying to doraemon cuz he wants to copy suneo's hobbies, and he obviously needs some gadget to do so cuz he's not good at the things suneo does. 🥱

p.s. suneo and his mom are so cunty, no other family duo is seeing them, ever!

i feel like this is one of those episodes that every hard-core doraemon fan knows, even if u haven't seen it, u have prolly heard of it if ur here. it's the episode that confirms suneo is one of those (although it's been hinted at for decades).

☆ Outfit Just Give It To Capanna (2021)

after the animation update in 2018 the titles just kept getting weirder and the episodes more boring, are they even making original episodes anymore nowadays? cuz they're always making those horrible remakes of classic episodes... but this is the exception, it's cute as fuck. yeah, once again nobita is jealous that suneo has a passion and is good at doing what he loves, so he asks doraemon for help. it's annoying bc he doesn't want it as bad as suneo does, he just wants to keep up with him (he can't), but all these episodes with the fashion designer thing are nice so i'll focus on that. also it's cute that suneo's mom lets him wear and borrow her clothes!
