Passing Notes: Vent
Din Djarin x f!reader | 935 words | Passing Notes masterlist
Tumblr media
summary: Din, in a vent. Or, an attempt at an extra scene from very early on in Be-All and Endor, one of my favorite fics of all time! If you haven’t read it, SPOILERS AHEAD!!!
a/n: I hope you like this little fic, @djarins-cyare – as you know, I find the entire idea of Din in the vent hilarious. Thank you for letting me play in your sandbox. 😂 happy @swiftiscruff gift exchange!
tags/warnings: tight spaces (Din is in a vent), Din being just a little bit creepy (gotta work on those social skills, Djarin)
...
Din looked around the corner and gauged his next move. He was lying on his stomach at an intersection, hands flat next to his head on the bottom of the vent, toes propped up. He knew he had to be almost there, at this point, maybe one or two rooms away from his destination.
But he had to move silently, and every slow and careful movement in this kriffing air vent took three times as long as normal.
He drew in a deep breath, careful not to let his chest plate shift against the bottom of the vent. He rose up until his weight was balanced on his toes and hands again and began to creep forward. He turned carefully and propped his left boot against the far corner of the vent junction, using that as leverage to turn himself to the right without brushing any of his armor against the metal walls surrounding him. Once in position facing his new direction, he began to crawl forward again on his hands and toes with slow, careful movements.
As he got closer, his helmet told him that the person he was tracking was, in fact, in the next room. He lowered himself carefully and tapped his vambrace to change what he was seeing, just for a moment. Below him there was nothing, which he already knew — that room was empty (of people, at least). But next door, just ahead of him, he could see a few heat signatures moving around the front of the large space off to his right, with only one heat signature seated and seemingly working over a table to his left.
It was her.
Din could tell, even without his helmet’s confirmation that this was the person he was tracking. Somehow in the less than 24 hours he’d known her he’d already memorized the shape of the outline of her body.
He felt his heart speed up but he blinked and took a few slow breaths. He couldn’t afford to get sloppy now. He quickly changed the settings back on his vambrace and lifted himself up again.
As he crept across the boundary between rooms in the air vent, he came to another intersection. He looked to the left, towards where she was sitting, and noticed a grate just a few feet ahead that seemed to be perfectly positioned right above her work station.
He couldn’t believe his luck.
Din forced himself to maintain his speed as he angled himself around the corner and turned once more. He took slow, steady breaths as he covered those last few inches between the junction and the grate, and then slowly and carefully lowered himself to rest on his belly right above her. He angled his head carefully until he could look through the vent, quietly thanking the universe for the fact that his helmet would blend in with the metal around him, in case anyone happened to glance up. In case she happened to glance up.
And there she was.
She was bent over a desk, carefully inspecting some sort of readout on a screen in front of her. Her brow was furrowed and she bit her lip as she examined the numbers. He studied the depression left in her lip by her teeth for a beat too long before tearing his eyes away. A glance told Din the data had something to do with the projection focusers, though he didn’t know exactly what, yet.
Having gathered what information he could from the screen, his eyes darted back to study her face again. With a pang he realized that she looked tired. Exhausted. She definitely hadn’t gotten enough sleep the night before. He mentally shrugged away the tiny pinch of guilt he felt at the realization. It probably didn’t have anything to do with him, after all. At least, he hoped not. She barely knew him. He barely knew her. It was unlikely that she was thinking about him as much as he couldn’t stop thinking about her.
She leaned forward and Din resisted the urge to lean forward with her, even though he had no room to lean anywhere inside the vent. She squinted at her screen and sighed. He watched intently as she rubbed her fingers over her brow, massaging her temples and running her fingertips back and forth over her forehead.
His careful inspection of the path of her fingertips against her skin was interrupted by the low groan she let out in frustration. Every muscle in Din’s body tensed and he sucked in a sharp breath. He blinked and willed himself to relax, trying not to make a sound or move his hips as he grit his teeth against the mental image of another, better reason she might make that sound. For him.
Suddenly she looked up and snapped him out of his distraction by calling out to one of her coworkers. Din thanked his years of training for how still his body remained even though mentally, he startled. It seemed she was going to have some parts brought down to check them out here, at her work station. As she described what she wanted, her careful words and instructions drew Din’s focus again like a magnet. It was immediately obvious that she knew what she was doing, that she was the expert in this room. That the other workers deferred to her.
Before the other workers moved away, he watched with growing interest as she entered commands at her workstation that would bring two of the focusers offline without affecting their overall operations.
Impressive.
He needed to know more.
Din settled into as comfortable a position as he could and waited to see what she would do next.
...
a/n: thank you for letting me play in your sandbox! I love Be-All so much. 🥰

Admittedly I don’t know much about Rae Sloane, but shouldn’t she be like smack dab in the middle of literally all the live action stuff that’s airing now?

(this eventually gets to a star wars rant if youre interested)
i feel like a large part of me enjoying the media i do is rooted in a treasure hunter sort of urge, like yeah i genuinely want 80% of the franchises i love to be literal shit. it makes the gems so much more enjoyable
like i love dreamworks because of shit like puss in boots 2, megamind, httyd, etc., but it wouldn't be the same without shark tale
same with scooby doo, i fucking love mystery inc, zombie island, the fucking lego special was delightful, like who would think that such random pieces of excellent media could exist between the just utter failures that franchise has produced
and the best ones are things like the live action scooby doo movies, or all hail king julien, or revenge of the sith, which balance being goofy as fuck with having genuinely incredible narratives and character work (just to clarify, i mean this in VERY different ways for each of the examples mentioned, but fuck off this is my blog ❤️)
but there's a line here, too. the bad shit? it has to be fun. like the bee movie is an abysmal attempt at storytelling, but it's still fun to laugh at because of how absurd it is.
star wars used to be the same way, but i feel it's getting less and less fun with each disney product (except andor my beloved ❤️)
the shitty mandalorian episodes, bobf, obi-wan...they're all so stale and plain that i find no joy in watching them beyond the initial "oh my god, it's [insert actor/character i like] again!"
like give us more batshit insane stuff like the battle for endor, or the new jedi order, or shit that, yeah might be terrible, but is at least fun to sift through while you're looking for the true incredible mind-meltingly good gems (ie, andor)
(although i can't help thinking, who knows, maybe one day i, or future generations, will look back on the disney shows and laugh at how bad they are...like that leia chase scene certainly has some great potential)

important worldbuilding thought is that sometimes real world shit is goofy or doesn't make sense
sometimes spec fic gets kind of poisoned by the idea that everything has to be "cool"
I always think of how derisive ppl get about Ewoks because they're "cute"
Real things are cute, real things are goofy looking, real things are unassuming sometimes, none of this makes them less what they are otherwise
Maybe watch more old animal documentaries, you know?
But also an Ewok is a person, in universe, and if you think small cute people can't be dangerous you have some self examination to do, actually

✭ Series Masterlist ✭
Tumblr media
Languishing in a dull and lonely existence on the forest moon of Endor after travelling there to help salvage Death Star wreckage, a nearly fatal encounter with a mysterious bounty hunter out in the forest heralds an opportunity to utilise long-forgotten skills and develop something more profound than you ever thought possible.
Second person POV, present tense. Set post-season 2, diverges from Canon events before TBoBF and season 3. This is a novel-length, exceptionally slow burn with an original plot, worldbuilding, and fully-developed characterisation. SWU concepts and lore are accurately researched.
WORDS: 404,920
PAIRING: Din Djarin x Female Reader/You
RATING: Explicit (18+)
CHARACTERS: Din Djarin, Reader/You/Female OC, Original Non-Human Character(s), Original Human Characters, Greef Karga, Cara Dune, Leia Organa, Luke Skywalker, Grogu, Peli Motto
TAGS: Slow Burn, Slow Build, Romance, Love, Sexual Tension, Eventual Smut, Smut, Sex, Sexual Content, Explicit Sexual Content, Fluff, Fluff and Smut, Fluff and Angst, Light Angst, Hurt/Comfort, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Relationships, Healthy Relationships, Canon-Typical Violence, Blood and Injury, Dark Past, Additional Warnings In Author's Notes, Bounty Hunter Din Djarin, Soft Din Djarin, Touch-Starved Din Djarin, Din Djarin Needs a Hug, Smart Din Djarin, Soft Dominant Din Djarin, Ewok Species, Mandalorian Culture, Mando'a Language, New Razor Crest, Thoroughly Researched, Worldbuilding, No use of y/n.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: This took me almost a year to write and four months to edit/proof. Each chapter is prefaced with specific tags and (where necessary) warnings, plus word counts. End notes contain translations and comments… this baby is thoroughly researched, so I’m sharing context where appropriate. I’ve also added definitions of in-universe terms so people less familiar with the franchise won’t be left wondering what the hell certain words or references mean. This is a slow burn (adult themes), and although the explicit content only occurs in the latter half, when it does, it warrants the ‘E’ rating. Basically, the first half is a love story, and the second half gets spicy. I hope you enjoy it!

✨Additional Media✨
@burntheedges has written a spectacular little drabble detailing what Din was up to during the paragraph break near the end of chapter 1 (*SPOILERS* you don’t find this out until chapter 27).
@djarin-desires has created some awesome AI images of a few scenes using Midjourney.
I spent a stupid amount of money on the Hot Toys official Din Djarin action figure, simply so I could photograph him in poses from my fic 🤷🏼‍♀️ This is just a taster of what’s to come, but here he is offering to help Reader climb onto the speeder in chapter 8.
🧡💚 Thank you for reading! 💚🧡

Discussion: Do any Star Wars planets have their own flags?
I mean of course we’ve seen flags (or at least insignias) for things like the Empire, the Republic, Separatists, First Order, etc, but do any individual planets have their own flags that we know of? 🤔
If they don’t, someone should design some! Thank you! 😁

‘He Ran All the Way’ – John Garfield’s last stand on Criterion Channel
John Garfield is all jittery paranoia and street-kid anger as a small-time hood in a bad spot in He Ran All the Way (1951). Over the course of a couple of sweltering days, he shoots a cop in a payroll robbery (Norman Lloyd is the partner who pressures him into the job) and takes a working-class family hostage in his escape. Hiding out at a public pool, he picks up a shy shop girl (Shelley…
