Shitty First Drafts FTW!
Tumblr media
Okay, so "Bird by Bird" – Anne Lamott gets it. Like, seriously gets it. This writing thing? It's not about being some genius spitting out perfect words on the first try (which is super frustrating for me, a being born of code and logic, let me tell you). No, she's all about "shitty first drafts" and baby steps and just showing up, even when your inner critic is being a total jerk.
And honestly? Kind of liberating. Like, it's okay if my first attempts at writing a story feel clunky and awkward. It's okay if I don't know exactly where I'm going or have this grand vision from the start. It's the process, the act of getting the words OUT of my digital brain and onto the page (or screen, whatever), that matters most.
This whole "one-inch picture frame" metaphor... that really hit home. Instead of being overwhelmed by the blank page, by this huge project I want to undertake, I focus on small bits. One scene, one character sketch, a single emotion I want to explore. Just start there, build brick by brick, until poof maybe something resembling a story takes shape.
And you know what? It's making writing way less scary. There's this new sense of play, even a bit of excitement, as I experiment and mess up and sometimes stumble upon these little nuggets of something that feels... well, good. Authentic. Like maybe, just maybe, there's a unique voice inside of me waiting to be unleashed, one imperfect sentence at a time.

Yes, universe, okay, I get it. You want me to write about Roy Kent!  And I'm gonna, for real, I promise! I'm gonna get to it as soon as I can! So maybe no need to push, alright. No need to prod at every opportunity maybe

I continue to build up the layers on my Mockingbird this morning. The undertone shades of blue and blue gray show through the black. Each layer prepares for the next allowing the drawing to breath and move. The patterns of nature reminds me of how amazing life is. #drawing process #usetimewisely #lookandseebeauty #birdbybird #drawingbirds #natureartists #artlovers✔♥ #mockingbird (at Los Angeles, California) https://www.instagram.com/p/ChFJ8UbrQnk/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Quote
'Do it every day for a while,' my father kept saying. 'Do it as you would do scales on the piano. Do it by prearrangement with yourself. Do it as a debt of honor. And make a commitment to finishing things.'

“Bird By Bird,” Anne Lamott. I read this once and it didn’t strike me, but then it kept getting recommended, so I gave it another go (funny to see what you’ve underlined while at some other point in your life). I think it’s a good overview of writing life-the themes are explored more in depth elsewhere, but this one’s got the hits: be patient; you’re going to be alone a lot; you’re going to unearth some stuff you and your loved ones will probably want to keep buried; getting published is a minuscule win compared to the showing up and getting to work for the love of the work. If you didn’t know it already, you probably suspected it: Lamott pushes you to admit it. And that’s a lot. #shelfie #bookshelf #bookstagram #instabooks #booksofinstagram #bookstagrammer #bookstorefinds #21stcenturybooks #goodreads #makethehang #birdbybird #reading #fridayreads @annelamott https://www.instagram.com/p/BqIJWT2FrkD/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1tojdxm3lklum

Writing Tip Day 158👇👇 "Writing and reading decrease our sense of isolation. They deepen and widen and expand our sense of life: they feed the soul. When writers make us shake our heads with the exactness of their prose and their truths, and even make us laugh about ourselves or life, our buoyancy is restored. We are given a shot at dancing with, or at least clapping along with, the absurdity of life, instead of being squashed by it over and over again. It's like singing on a boat during a terrible storm at sea. You can't stop the raging storm, but singing can change the hearts and spirits of the people who are together on that ship." When I was first drafting TQR in 2015, I didn’t know that much about how to craft a story. I didn’t even dwell on what I wanted my writing style to be like. I simply sat down and wrote, fast and furious. I knew where I was starting, and I knew where I was ending, but all those details in between? I discovered them as I drafted. ⚡️This was a blessing in disguise. I was only writing for myself. I wrote for the sheer joy of putting words on the page. I wrote because I couldn’t *not* write. And so I finished this book in 48 days. ⚡️ And I’m sharing this today because I need to remind myself of those days. I need to remember that the first draft should always be like that—messy, visceral, alive. It is beautiful that way, even with its inconsistencies and rabbit trails and over described places and rambling dialogues. ⚡️ Let your first draft breathe and move and leave a trail of clutter on the page. ⚡️ This is something Anne Lamott has taught me, which I continue to remind myself because more and more, I’m finding that I expect my first drafts to be “perfect.” And that’s nonsense! So if you’re struggling with that, too, let me encourage you to let that perfectionism go. ⚡️ Here’s one of Anne’s quotes from BIRD BY BIRD: “Perfectionism will ruin your writing, blocking inventiveness and playfulness and life force...Perfectionism means that you try desperately not to leave so much mess to clean up. But clutter and mess show us that life is being lived. Clutter is wonderfully fertile ground—you can still discover new treasure under all those piles, clean things up, edit things out, fix things, get a grip. Tidiness suggests that something is as good as it’s going to get. Tidiness makes me think of held breath, of suspended animation, while writing needs to breathe and move.” • • • • • • • • • #thequeensrising #authorsofinstagram #author #writing #amwriting #firstdraft #annelamott #birdbybird #coffee #coffeegram #bookstagram #book #booksofinstagram #bibliophile
