I’ve been reading your blog for the better part of the year and it’s helped me rethink many things. This year was weird for me and I’ve been reflecting, I finally got courage to write this confession and I only feel comfortable sending it here. It’s okay if you post it. I think there are other people like me.

My Confession:

I’m an Orbit-Blink shooter who used to fight with an Army shooter daily until she died during the earthquakes in Turkey this year. I didn’t realize how much of my life and fan experience was tied to her until she died BPP. The way I got into shooting was through my Blink friend who introduced me to Loona when they debuted. At first I thought I was defending Loona and then defending Blackpink, but at some point shooting on its own for any reason became addicting. I would jump in on a ratio, throw insults and post gore and graphic images to people’s DMs for any small reason.

There was one Army shooter I hated because she was always there with screenshots or videos to drag Blackpink. Whenever there was a fanwar I knew I would see her there. And times when she wasn’t in the fight, I would use another account pretending to be an Army to tell her what was happening so I could rile her up to join the fight. I didn’t know it at the time but I loved fighting with her. She made me feel alive. The way she was passionate about BTS made me want to get some of that passion directed at me in any form.

Now, after months of reflecting, that’s what I realized. Because when the earthquake happened, I didn’t know she was dead. I kept checking her account for days, sending DMs from my fake Army profile, wondering why she was not replying. I even created a new scandal for Taehyung in our shooter group but she didn’t tweet. Then 2 weeks later her cousin tweeted from her account to say she died in the earthquake. BPP, it was like my whole life stopped. I became extremely depressed and dealt with extreme self loathing. I couldn’t look at any fandom fight without thinking about all the things I did to her. I hated myself and wanted to die. I went through that Armys profile and saw how her love for BTS was genuine. After months of therapy now I understand more why I acted like that, but it’s something I’ll forever be ashamed about.

In the depths of my depression I deleted Twitter, TikTok, and Instagram. After some weeks of missing what’s happening, I got Tumblr and found your blog talking about fandom behavior. In so many ways you’ve saved my life BPP. The way I was shooting was more for other shooters than Loona or Blackpink or even myself. I realize now there’s a whole subculture of kpop shooters and I think what they have is an addiction. I notice the same things with how solo stans behave. They think they’re doing it for the idols but it’s for them and other stans they’re fighting. It creates destruction. Life is short. Why spend it on something destructive?

I’ve changed everything about how I behave online. Through therapy and reading your blog, I realize people use fandom to express themselves, and if that expression is mostly negative, there’s deeper problems with that person that needs solving. Now I curate my space and avoid shooters and fanwars completely. I now focus on what I enjoy which is good lore and good music (I still enjoy a good fight but I now satisfy this need by getting engaged in Munk Debates in my city). Loona’s lore was the reason I was interested in them, so after weeks of stalking that dead Army’s profile, I learned that BTS has lore too. I fell down the BTS rabbit hole and officially became an Army on Jimin’s birthday (after reading your blog I’m now Yoonminkook biased hehe)

I’m a very new Army but an ‘old’ kpop fan and reformed shooter. I’ve committed to live a life that’s critical and compassionate. Because of how I’ve become Army, some things I’m seeing in how fans of diff fandoms act has a different meaning to me. I still struggle with shame and sometimes when I see fanwars or see solos trending hashtags and things, I remember me from what feels like long ago. I remember that Army shooter who feels like someone I owe my life to. I remember how so much is going on in the world and we could do with more kindness but people use fandom to be awful assholes. I was one such person, attimes I still have to bite my tongue. But what I do now is log off, go do something physical and positive that makes me tired, or scroll through your blog archives.

There might be people like me trying to get away from the shooter mindset and struggling because it’s hard. It’s like an addiction. I want those people to know it’s doable. Recognizing the problem is the hardest part for real so if they are at that point, it gets easier from there.

it was his look in the suits that really get me cause guys dont really dress like that anymore, it was so old school and honestly he looks so good in suits it rlly suits him (excuse le pun) and yes i agree a lot of younger idols obvi prefer younger age women / girls. sighhhh. i will just wait till im dead then i can at least be with elvis. literally the only plus side from being mildly older is getting to experience an internet free childhood the downside is everyones hooked online and we cant escape it. otherwise i could live a bit more freely without fretting about age or comparing myself to others and whatnot. also i will probs be dead by the time half these newer generation groups even get married. rip me once again

idfk anymoreee its so weird to think that some 5/6/7 years ago kpop was just gaining popularity and obvi bts and blackpink and nct were go to groups now theres hundreds of them but theyre all like 99 or 00 liners and im like yeah noooo not "stanning" them for me. ik they wouldnt particularly judge older fans bc musics for any age but even so ngl its fucking weird like why cant there be more older groups too or they just going to disband and or retire or go into the military? san in military uniform... n im dead.

i think the thing i like about ateez they do have a rebel punky look to them like they look like villains from a kdrama or general bad boys on stage its so cool, different n hot at the same time, other groups should take some notes. i think newer kpop groups going to struggle vocally anywah cause every song got to have clean performance

mamamoo are so great cause they sing so well and they have minimal dancing which is nice compared to newer girl groups where its all dance glitz and glam or they look dainty and doll like, it sometimes isnt really relatable imho. it just doesnt hold my interest in them fully cause its not my personal taste or again their age might be lack in experience if any of this makes sense? i cant get a time machine and go back to the 50s and the only other relevant music nowadays is kpop so either they should bring more variety or i will eventually forget about kpop cause its always the samey tiktok stuff

I’ve read articles about how “heart attack” was initially perceived as sapphic and caught the interest of many gay girls nationally and internationally for that reason. i’m always curious if chuu and yves are happy w that, if they liked doing this concept, if it resonated w it at all, or if this attention was not what they expected or wanted

This is a really good question! To my recollection, the interview with MTV was the only time either of them explicitly talked about Heart Attack and the fan reception

Part of me thinks that Yves is kind of bullshitting by saying "We didn't see it like that" because the MV description makes it quite abundantly clear that Chuu is looking at Yves in a romantic light, though I wonder if whilst shooting, it might not have been made clear to them as actors and then when the MV was released and they saw the final cut they were like 'oh damn'. Which would kind of be hilarious.

(In Korean it reads something like "Heart Attack is not a serious contemplation of her feelings of falling in love, but rather a lively expression of Chuu's feelings as if looking at an IRL emoji", again making it pretty clear that Chuu's feelings for Yves is love)

Even ignoring the description, the MV alone spells it out quite explicitly that Chuu's feelings are love, not like. I guess platonic stalking happens, but the camera's focus on Yves' lips and smile, how Chuu is shown to react (a glance from Yves is translated to a finger heart bullet with fluttering heart confetti exploding everywhere upon impact), and Chuu's fantasy/dream sequence is Yves handfeeding her, holding her hand and hugging her with heart balloons in Yves' room, strongly suggest Chuu is in love with her. I kind of have a hard time believing that either of them thought Chuu's feelings for Yves were just platonic whilst filming.

I think they definitely had an inkling of what they were doing whilst filming (I don't think they did prior to this), and I think they knew how it'd be received, but I also think they played dumb when asked about it to play it safe with conservative audiences. I'm not sure whether in 2017-19 (or even now) an explicit answer of "Yes, it's homoerotic on purpose" would've been OK for their careers.

"happy with it, liked it, resonated, expected" I think are difficult questions to answer. I think Chuu really liked her concept, but I know that Yves was actually quite upset -- not by the LGBT angle -- but because she was promised by the director to debut like a sexy R&B/Hip Hop 5th blackpink member, and instead she got love4eva. I think Yves has grown into liking it a lot, because I think as an idol a lot of where she finds enjoyment from her job is meaning a lot to people. By becoming an iconic LGBT figure in Kpop alongside Chuu, she means more to people and gives far more to people than if she was just a bogstandard singing and dancing idol. I think it means a lot to all members of LOONA to represent the LGBT community in their body of work, and the members make a conscious effort to reinforce this as often as they can, albeit within the perceived restraints that society has on how far they can go with it.

Also fun bonus but I like this article where Yves is listed as an idol who expressed solidarity for the LGBT community alongside Tiffany Young hehe

the mall show was amazing!!! 100% live vocals and lots of funny fan interactions aND!!! ships!!! mygosh bc their management has a "prom" event coming up and the girls made promposals and i witnessed 2 promposals that day!!! bc there's a voting thing for best promposal w/in the attendees heheheh i have a fancam i couldn't scream bc i was at the second floor where casuals were lmao im gonna post clips on the ppop blog and maybe post the whole stuff in youtube when i get the damn time 😭😭😭

and also attended blackpink concert the following day as always philippines loudest crowd AND singing/ rapping/ dancing crowd as well! like 70% singing and 30% screaming in one song for everyone so the pinks had 100k backup singers, rappers, and dancers lmao idk if i can send fancam bc i was so loud again HAHAH like !!! i rapped all the rap parts and suddenly i could sing in korean lmao like jennie didn't mind all the phones up in the air bc she could tell the crowd was multitasking w fancams, partying, and jamming along they couldn't stop smiling, getting goosebumps, and signaling how they couldn't hear anything lmao (also gay bc they were like the crowd's so loud they got excited too and their hearts were beating so fast so rosé made lisa feel her chest bc heartbeat and lisa got shy lmao bc her hand was trapped against rosies chest and jisoo imitated rosé w jennie and the way jennie was looking at jisoo's chest- 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 i screamed fr oh my god those are my bp mainships 😭😭😭😭😭)

my feet hurt bc i jumped the whole concert 😭😭😭 and had to walk to the car from the venue it was so faaar bc traffic like we walked across the beidge over the express way and the venue was so big as well w so many goddamn stairs and like one elevator tf like if you search "philippine arena" our seat was at the top like in the plate thingy already 😭😭😭😭 but it was fun but it was tiring and then we played badminton today and i ate so much and im so sleepy but didhsjsksj cONGRATULATIONS ON THE SPAAAAM

Oooo This is a great question, and one I’m bad at answering LMAO. But I’m give it my all :D

They actually all listen exclusively to kpop.

Katara listens to BLACKPINK, Sokka listens to TWICE, Zuko listens to GOT7, Suki listens to EXO, Aang listens to SuperM, and Toph listens to BTS. Well, the whole Gaang listens to BTS because they're amazing.

LMAO okay maybe they don't all listen to kpop, but if they were to listen to a specific group, the Gaang gives off these vibes (except Aang. I just picked another group that I knew. Idk what kind of kpop vibes he'd prefer lmao).

But let me actually answer your question hehe :)

Katara: Hmmm Indie music, select bits of pop? Big fan of Jackson Wang tho ;) (he's our fancast for Zuko haha!)

Aang: He seems like an old soul kind of music guy. Like… Frank Sinatra and stuff lol. He's also a fan of jazz, and has a bit of the personality to try and explain why jazz is so amazing and more people should listen to it. Just a bit LOL. After a while, though, he realizes quickly that other music is fabulous as well and broadens his music tastes to what his friends like! Also love songs. He can't get enough of those.

Sokka: Pop music, classic rock, and a bit of the old school rap for the poetic pieces and rhythm (I'm thinking Biggie and Tupac and Eminem in particular). He has rap battles with Toph, too haha!

Zuko: Rock, hip hop. He's also not opposed to listening to what his friends put on, but he's got a hard stop with country music. Just can't do it.

Suki: Suki seems like she would enjoy indie music, but also Taylor Swift. She's a bit of a Swiftie LOL. Pop punk would also be her style too, I think.

Toph: Rock music, because puns. Also, she's got a great musical ear, so I think she'd appreciate complex compositions in classical music and picking all the different parts out. She's also a rap monster haha!

Bonus with Kanto: Alternative rock, rap music. He's big on songs with a quick bpm so that he can work out or dance! He seems like a guy that enjoys a solid beat/rhythm in his music.

- But he doesn’t leave. He actually finds the tweets quite amusing.

- He begins laughing along with you at the BlackPink & SEVENTEEN memes.

- He may not be crazy about it, but it’s ok because he just loves the simple bonding you guys have over it.

- He may mention it here and there like, “What’s that group? .....The one you really like? I kinda thought their moves were cool.” Or “I saw them on TV this morning...they did good.”

- He even asks Tifa. “Hey...Tifa, You know BlackPink?”

Sephiroth:

- Oh, Sephiroth...

- As a psycho, who wants to destroy and conquer the planet....yeah no. He gives no fucks about it.

- But,,,as sane Seph, he loves a good bop or two.

- You show him a song, very excited for his reaction. And unexpectedly, he delivers.

- “Wonderful.” A small smile showing.

- He asks to listen to another song by this group. He rarely has a chance to loosen up and enjoy himself due to all the strenuous training he undergoes.

- But another reason he’s enjoying this is because it makes him feel human. The feeling, the emotion he feels when listening gives him a rush that he won’t admit.

- “Who is this, Y/N?”

- “Day6”. You say.

- Once he heard that, he made sure that in his free time he’d add some of their songs to his playlist.

- He loves ‘Sweet Chaos’, ‘I Wait’, ‘How Can I Say’, ‘Shoot Me’, etc.

- You’ll hear him humming these songs to himself as he’s making his morning coffee or putting on his uniform. And you love it.

- He also decided to never tell you this but Youtube recommended him “God’s Menu” by Stray Kids and he stays vibing to it.

hi anon! i just got off of work lol so i’m ready for dive into this ask! thanks for sending hehe ~

i’m not sure if you have already watched the video but i’ll mention some brief points i-spy made that sorta stuck out to me as they explained the “blackpink as a self-insert character” phenomenon. you explained it perfectly; idol images are carefully crafted and curated marketing tools to sell the idea of their “persona” and “tropes”. members follow specific aesthetics, behaviours, styles etc. to fit their persona, most likely hiding their complete true selves (as all human beings really are incredibly nuanced and complex) and selling these “characters” along with the music. as we see idols as characters most of the time (as this is what we are usually shown) it’s not surprising that fans fall into the phenomenon of projecting themselves onto idols and turning them into self-inserts and their own personal Y/Ns, Lisa being notably the most popular for girls, Jimin from BTS for men & Jungkook from BTS as the most famous love-interest insert (hence the popularity of the liskook & jikook ships). fans will choose either the idols with the persona they want to be or relate to most as their self-insert.

funny confession: when i was 12 years old, i was guilty of this self-insert phenomenon! i used to write fanfic of snsd & 2pm (lol old stuff) where jessica jung was my personal self-insert & yuri & tiffany were inserts of my two closest friends. at the time, i related to jessica a lot as her persona was “ice princess”; someone cold, violent, standoffish, hot-tempered. i was a particularly aggressive person (i still am tbh lol) so i channeled her as me & wrote the story loosely based on my own life events. it’s interesting because it wasn’t as if i couldn’t write my own OCs; it was that i was attracted to jessica’s looks & personality & was able to curate a life that was like mine but much more interesting & exciting. 12 years old was actually one of the best years of my life lol so it wasn’t a factor of feeling lonely and unsatisfied but reveling in the bond i had with my friends thru the vessel of kpop. it was really just me being young and aspiring to be like these idols who i looked up to and saw as my role models (i still love snsd with my whole heart lol).

nowadays, Lisa is the most popular self-insert option especially for international fans; she’s pretty, thin and conventionally attractive, she’s foreign in Korea thus seen as “exotic” (from other’s pov not mine lol... exotic is not a compliment tho many believe it is), she’s talented, she’s branded as the group’s personal badass (and who wouldn’t want that?) thru the use of aesthetics from black culture (we will not dive into this tho lol) whilst simultaneously using her aegyo on variety shows (multi-faceted) and yet she’s quite a private person despite her popularity (as we can see from her instagram, everything is very vague). she’s the perfect self-insert for international fans; pretty & skinny, foreign in korea like them, a “badass”, private and mysterious and naturally gifted, hardworking and talented, wears nice clothes and presents visually-appealing aesthetics so they are able to project whatever they want onto her. she’s the main character - in the end she will get the guy (or girl), win the competition, solve the mystery etc. hell, if Lisa were an idol when I was 12 I probably would have used her as my self-insert cause she’s also se Asian lol. and it doesn’t stop at Lisa or even blackpink; we know so little of idols’ actual selves and only of what they share, all of which is pre-curated as marketing tools that they are perfect character material. in blackpink’s case we can actually pinpoint why their stans can be quite... obsessive and protective lol; as they see the girls as themselves, any sort of criticism is seen as an attack on themselves.

main character syndrome is actually something i’ve been watching videos on lol where basically ppl aspire to take on a mindset of being the “main character” of their own story or film so as to take control of their lives and live their lives to the fullest. it has its pros and has its cons but relatively it’s harmless so long as it’s not taken too seriously or deeply (cause that can breed into selfishness and narcissism lol). as nowadays we have become invested in being the “main character” or “y/n” and start applying these tropes to ourselves whether it be thru labels, fashion, aesthetics or activities we do to build up our main character profiles... it’s no surprise that with Kpop idols being at our disposal with carefully crafted personas in place, fans will project onto them and use them as self-inserts as a form of escapism when life is feeling mundane, dull and not worthy of the “main character” title.

i-spy mentions that this is most likely to happen when ppl feel lonely and unsatisfied with their lives that they can escape and take form in the idols they look up to. young girls are especially vulnerable as they are more subject to developing insecurities growing up. if they can’t be the conventionally attractive confident badass in real life, they can be lisa who’s persona encapsulates that. much of my life, I’ve been... empty and unsatisfied lol (sometimes I still am) so I understand these ppl’s attraction to projecting on idols. I think so long as it’s not too deep or taken too seriously, doing so (especially for young girls) won’t cause any harm and may actually direct their paths in life. these idols are like... their vessel into discovering themselves - what they like, don’t like etc. the reason why many ppl write fanfic or participate in role plays is because they admire qualities in these ppl and find them to be the perfect characters as they are still figuring out themselves and what they want in a significant other. i think so long as ppl acknowledge the bigger picture as they embark on these journeys & don’t sink too deeply as to lose their identities or deepen any insecurities (or fall into toxic behaviours or unhealthy habits), I think self-inserts are relatively harmless. it’s only when ppl aspire to be these idols (who are not even themselves really) and latch onto unhealthy practices to look like them, act like them etc. that self-insert behaviour becomes dangerous.

1. i love you (sarawat x tine). my first ever big fic!!! i think i wrote this in this two days which is.. too short for a 5.4k fic but oh well sjhksjf i feel very proud of it and i love it to this day 🥰🥰

I’m so embarrassed to say that! But when I first got into Kpop, I wanted to stick with the “smaller groups�� and I would see EXO everywhere once I jumped in all the way. My brain would equate them with other huge boy bands from around the world and that was something I wasn’t into. But then I heard several of their songs in compilations videos and I was... okay. I’ll look. They’re big for a reason, right? If I don't care for the music, then I’ll move on. Well.. I bet you can guess... I liked the music. Kind of. Lol. (please note that was sarcasm, thank you)

26. Are you a gg, bg, or middle/coed stan?

I want to say that I’m a coed fan. I really want to. Because technically, I do have girl groups that I like/listen to. Like Red Velvet, Blackpink, 2ne1, Mamamoo. But I have to be honest, I’m a much bigger boy group fan. I listen to more boy groups and I tend to like their music a lot more. I’m not a big fan of “cutesy” concepts. I like the cool concepts and the... harder? darker? more hip-hop-type music? I don’t know how to describe it. I like some cute songs, but I like the ones that I can rock out to a bit more.
