This was really interesting!!

Re: overall tumblr top 10: I think it’s funny that my throwaway moodboards are often some of the most popular content on my blog. Things I’m just like ‘ooh I gotta make this’ are mixed in with requests, I think that’s interesting! Ms. Frizzle just blowing away the competition, that’s amazing and I love it. Nothing is even close to how popular she is, and she deserves it. Jack Skellington coming onto the list twice? Come through king, I would love to write a full fic in Halloweentown sometime.

Generally, the more ‘alternative’ characters seem to get a lot more attention on my blog: The Pumpkin King, Morticia, Wybie, Sundrop and Moondrop... Tiana and Naveen really snuck up there though!

Moving onto the more direct fic comparison:

....well this made me realize that I never published my Sanders Sides fics from this blog on AO3, whoops

Setting that aside, fics with angst and plot tend to do better on AO3, while fluffy stories do better on tumblr: Sugary Sweet doesn’t even hit my top 10 on AO3 and it’s one of the fluffiest fics I’ve ever written, coming in at #5 on the tumblr list

On the other hand, Only Heaven I’ll Be Sent To is by far one of my best performing fics on AO3, but comes in at number 6 (tied with another fic) on tumblr, probably because it features a lot of action and gore alongside the fluffy agere elements, same for Restrained showing up on the AO3 top but not tumblr’s.

My Harry Potter fics do way better on tumblr, which is interesting? Maybe Harry Potter fans are still reading their fics on independent forums? Or Harry Potter folks on AO3 don’t cross over much with the agere crowd. (Or maybe they’re just overloaded with /reader fics) I haven’t been actually into the HP community since around 2011 so I’m not sure what’s up there.

Big shoutout to Class Outing for dominating the top of both lists: BNHA is such a big fandom that it makes sense, and I wrote that fic on @agere-fandom-time, which I think got more interaction than this blog: it seems like people are more comfortable interacting with a group-run blog, rather than an individual writer. Or maybe that’s a natural consequence of more writers putting out more consistent content, letting the blog get bigger. I’m not sure! Either way, even if I’m not into BNHA anymore, I feel like it’s a good piece of my writing, so I’m happy for it to be my top spot.

BNHA Observations, speculations and assorted info: Pre-marriage Todoroki Enji (Part 1)

So, in order to write my fic, I spend much time observing canon scenes, comparing the manga and the anime version, take note of details, translations and info in them as well as finding out how are some things called.

Since what I noticed/speculated/found out can be of use for other fic authors I thought to share as well.

To this date the chapter that shows the youngest Todoroki Enji is 356, which include some sort of dream/hallucination in which Enji faces his past self and his 'origin' so first let's look at...

THE FULL SEQUENCE AS IT IS IN THE MANGA

There are two core scenes, one depicting Enji's father's death preceded by a speech of young Enji:

'Sara ni yowaku natta' 「更に弱くなった」 “You became beyond weak.”

'Tachiba to tsugunai to ayamachi to sekinin ga' 「立場と償いと過ちと責任が」 “Position, atonement, mistakes and responsibility.”

'Omae no seirai no yowasa wo abaki dashi miru ni taenai guzu e to hikizuri oroshita' 「おまえの生来の弱さを曝き出し見るに堪えない愚図へと引きずり下ろした」 “Your innate weaknesses was exposed and I can't bear to see how you were dragged down into an indecisive person.”

'Chōjin ni wa narenainda yo Enji (omae) wa' 「超人にはなれないんだよ炎司（おまえ）は」 “Enji, you can’t become a superhuman.”

'Genten wo omoi dase' 「原点を思い出せ」 “Remember your origin.”

While fighting the Nomu Enji said he hated U.A. School motto, Plus Ultra or, in Japanese 'Sarani mukō e' (更に向こうへ "Beyond the other side" or, better "Further beyond"). Now his past self seems to taunt him saying 'Sara ni yowaku natta' (更に弱くなった “You became beyond weak.”)

'Seirai no yowasa' (生来の弱さ) is translated as 'weakness that was always there' in the English version but 'seirai' (生来) actually make clear the weakness is innate, by nature. In short Enji was born weak and tried to hid it. 'Guzu' (愚図), more than a loser is a 'foolish figure', a 'dullard' or also an 'indecisive person'. Enji project an air of arrogance and security but Enji's younger self is implying he's basically not capable.

The official translation uses "Superhero" to translate 'Chōjin' (超人), but there's no 'hero' in the word, someone can be a 'Chōjin' (超人) and be a villain. Ironically we could also translate it as 'superman', and considering later Enji uses laser eyes like Superman I wonder if this was planned.

'Teki ga nan datta no ka wo' 「敵が何だったのかを」 "What was the enemy?"

'Akkan kara shoujo wo sukuou to shi kekka shoujo moro tomo nikukai to ka shita chichi wo' 「悪漢から少女を救おうとし結果少女もろとも肉塊と化した父を」 "Your father tries to save a girl from a scroundel and, as a result, he and the girl were turned into a lump of meat."

The way the sentence is put, it seems to imply that the girl and Enji's father both died because the man tried to save her.

Enji is witnessing the scene, a schoolbag on his back. His school uniform misses the shoulder insigna and the necktie which are part of U.A. summer uniform, so it's possible this took place before Enji joined U.A.

The whole implication of the sentence and the dialogue seems to be that since his father was weak, he caused his own death as well as the one of the girl, and this should have started Enji's obsession for strength.

Young Enji goes on speaking about other things Enji should remember:

’Shin no choujin he no senbou to higami wo’ 「真の超人への羨望と僻みを」 “Your envy and inferiority complex toward a true superhuman…”

Again, the official translation uses plural but there's the image of All Might and in My Hero Academia Ultra Archive is made clear Enji previously viewed everyone else but All Might as weak, so the 'true superhuman' is solely All Might back in his past (then he also added Deku).

We can't see Enji's father's face but he's likely the man on the picture hung on the wall in the room with the Butsudan as in that room Enji would place the photo of his deceased family members.

Going on.

'"Doryoku (‘Endeavor’)” to nanoru hikutsu na shoune wo' 「“努力" （エンデヴァー）と名乗る卑屈な性根を」 “You called yourself ‘effort’ (read 'Endeavor’) due to your menial nature.”

This bit confirms Enji chose his Hero name while at U.A. and picked it up because (compared to All Might) he believed he lacked in skill but, probably, he thought he could compensate with effort/hard work.

From other chapters we know Enji and Recovery Girl know each other from his time at U.A.

‘OB no Yoshimi de kite ageta yo’ 「OBのよしみで来てあげたよ」 “I came for you since you were an alumnus”

'Soreni ima wa mō No.1 hīrōda mono ne' 「それに今はもうNo.1ヒーローだものね」 "Besides, you're also the No. 1 hero now.'

While in the Japanese version Recovery Girl is more vague, saying she came because Enji was an alumnus, since she's in U.A. by basically forever she likely got to know him, which is confirmed in "School Briefs I Epilogue" and "School Briefs III Dramatic Makeover!".

In "School Briefs I Epilogue" is said that with her Enji manages his manners because she's someone he had known nearly all his life.

By the way the two of them call each other by their Hero names.

"School Briefs III Dramatic Makeover!" is more specific. It has Recovery Girl tell Shōto she's been in U.A. by a long time and knew his father from when he was a student at U.A. and how she was always threating him for scrapes, cuts and bruises back in those days as his father used to put himself through the wringer hoping to become Number 1 one day, implying he was impressively driven. Shōto will make clear he doesn't want to hear about his father so she'll later be more subtle, telling him every boy and girl at U.A. tend to do their darnest and that they always had, implying Enji did the same.

We also have a bit of info in "Team-Up Missions: Mission 33" about how Enji holds the U.A. record for no-quirks trash pick-up (as All Might was too busy chatting with everyone).

'Sorezore ga hirotta gomi no sōryō o kiroku!' 「それぞれが拾ったゴミの総量を記録！」 "Record the total amount of trash each person picked up!"

'Tadashi "kosei" shiyō-fuka!' 「ただし”個性”使用不可！」 "However, "Quirk" cannot be used!"

'Onore no junsuina tairyoku nomi de shin kiroku o mezasu nōsuji ibentona nda!' 「己の純粋な体力のみで新記録を目指す脳筋イベントなんだ！」 "It's a brain-muscle event where you aim for a new record using only your own physical strength!"

'Chinamini rekidai No. 1 kiroku hoji-sha Endeavor da 「ちなみに歴代No.1記録保持者エンデヴァーだ」 "By the way, Endeavor is the all-time No. 1 record holder."

There's something else in chap 356 that's interesting in the following bit.

'Kojishite inakereba tamotenu teido no minikui kokoro wo' 「誇示していなければ保てぬ程度の醜い心を」 “Unless you're putting on airs you can't sustain your ugly heart”

'Minikui' (醜い) means "ugly" in the sense of "unsightly/unattractive". 'Kokoro' (心) is a delicious word that can refer to "(emotional) heart" but also to "mind" and "soul".

So basically Young Enji is saying that to hide the fact Enji is weak and indecisive, not a real superhuman, he put on airs to hide it... but the interesting part is that the image focuses on Enji's fire beard.

This was said in his profile.

The rest we have on Enji's youth is from other chapter and it's mostly tiny info.

We've a young Enji, who's now an adult but who still feels the gap between himself and All Might is one he can't surpass.

'Kisama (All Might)..." 「貴様（オールマイト）…」 "All Might..."

'Kisama o koeyou to kensan o kasanete kita…!' 貴様を超えようと研鑽を重ねてきた…！ "I've been repeatedly training hard to surpass you…!"

'Kasaneru hodo ni tsūkan suru.' 重ねる程に痛感する。 "I realized the more I repeatedly did it, the more I feel the pain."

'Kisama to no sa ga… kisama no senaka ga…!!' 貴様との差が… 貴様の背中が…！！ "The difference between you and me is… your back…! !"

'Zetsubō ga! ! Ore o…' 絶望が！！俺を… "I despaired! ! I…"

'Nanda so nonnasakenai senaka wa!!' 「なんだそのっ情けない背中は！！」 “What’s with that pathetic back?!”

LOL, the sentence seems not to make sense but in Japan a large back is equated to strength. Hawks later, thinking about Endeavor will say Enji must do it because Hawks' back isn't large enough.

On another interesting bit... even if Enji says 'All Might' the kanji actually say 'kisama' (貴様) which is currently a very rude way to say 'you'.

We've another bit about Enji's past when he talks with All Might after the latter retired.

'Ore wa ase kō ni subete o takushita' 「俺は焦凍に全てを託した」 "I entrusted everything to Shoto"

'Hatachi no koro ni wa sudeni No. 2 e to noboritsumeta.' 「二十歳の頃には既にNo.2へと登りつめた」 "By the time I was 20 years old, I had already climbed to No. 2."

'Tō tte kitakara koso… rikai shite shimatta.' 「登ってきたからこそ…理解してしまった」 "Because I made that climb… I understands."

'Ore wa itadaki ni wa tadoritsukenai to' 「俺は頂きには辿り着けないと」 "I can't reach the top"

'katagaki ga hoshī dakenara kisama no yō ni herahera to' 「肩書きが欲しいだけなら貴様のようにヘラヘラと」 "If I just wanted a title, I'll be laughing like you."

'Aiso mo furimaitadarou sa.' 「愛想も振りまいただろうさ」 "I would have showed sociability as well."

'Ore wa dare yori tsuyoku naritakatta' 「俺は誰より強くなりたかった」 "I wanted to be stronger than anyone else"

Okay so this was meant to be solely about Enji's past but I can't skip this line. The English translation decided to translate 'takushita' (託した) with 'gave' but it's not like Enji gave Shouto everything Shouto wanted... it's that Enji entrusted his dream, his everything to Shouto. So he's not really depicting himself like a doting father but as a father who planned to have his kid fulfil his dream.

The relevant part in this little dialogue is that Enji became Number 2 at 20.

Considering he started U.A. at 15 and should have finished attending it at 19, it's quite a fast climbing.

The mountain is probably Sekoto Peak (瀬古杜岳 'Sekoto take'), where Enji said he used to train in the past and where Touya will 'die'. (Chap 291).

According to Hawks, Enji was the only one trying to surpass All Might.

Technically though, considering Hawks is one year younger than Touya and got interested in Endeavor after he was saved, he only witnessed him post marriage and it's hard to say if this applied also to when Enji was pretty young. Anyway the previous generation of Heroes come out pretty lame as now the kids at U.A. wants to surpass All Might while before only Enji considered doing it.

And so we get to Enji deciding he can't surpass All Might and therefore must produce a heir who will do so for him... but as that part was transposed in the anime, for a better comparison I'll put it in a part 2.

You know how BNHA in the latest chapters touched on how the countryside seems to hold different views on mutants and such? There is one thing I was thinking about Mt Lady, they pointed out that she basically would create less damage if she was a countryside hero but in the city

The hero work pays more, you get more attention, you can become a celebrity faster

Maybe there are less heroes concentrated on the countryside so less exposure to other mutants in position of power and respect as well as less heroes to police the heteromorph persecution

And as such stuff like the CRC can work more freely in there

Oh and the Meta Liberation Army too, if Deika location is anything to go by

(and can I tie in a bit of bnha lore speculation?) Maybe the countryside was always harder to be regulated? Maybe what Banjo meant here was that the current status and configuration of the society in the arc was literally how society during early Dawn of the Exceptional age organized itself as it fell into chaos,

and as described by Best Jeanist:

And if we take the ratio of the early Rhode island Hero System(7/189) as a mirror tho the ratio of heroes per villains in other countries that implemented it, then they were operating with (more or less) 0,037% of the available manpower to cover any ground and offer their services. So some territory would be inevitably out of reach. It didnt’ look anything like the hero saturated society that was operating before the PLF war, with a hero every corner

Smaller areas of jurisdictions for heroes because it's more managable for their resourses=>countryside criminality and hate groups being out of control because of the jurisdiction it's outside=>perpetuation of the mindset of groups like the CRC in there

And then to this day, the countryside still remains badly patrolled because there is little financial incentive under the current hero system

the Implications....................

1- You don't want a soulmate, here. because that means you're going to kill someone, get killed, or both. But alas, some people are not so lucky. Izuku's got a name on one of his wrists- Shigaraki Hajime, and everyone he knows is sure he's going to get killed in a quirkless hatecrime. Inko is constantly terrified. His dad vanished as soon as he saw it in the hospital. Izuku still wants to be a hero. He hopes to make his life mean something, and maybe even his death, that way.

2- Izuku later assumes The Sludge Villian is Shigaraki Hajime, until All Might saves his life. He mentions this in a daze- "oh, i guess he's not shigaraki hajime after all. I still have time."- and All Might freezes. Because he's got the same name on his write. Because Nana had that same name on her wrist. Because that's AfO's real name, and he killed Nana, and All Might killed him. This kid shouldn't even know that name, let alone reluctantly show him on his wrist when he asks.

3- Stain has just straight up been killing whatever name he sees on his wrist and assuming its because they're unworthy. the paradoxical concern for this is not something he worries about. he spares anyone not on his list, including Iida Tensei.

4- Chisaki had names on his wrists. So did Eri. Those names were removed via Overhaul before Pops could ever see them.

5- AfO didn't even have to do a lot of work to find Tenko. All it took was hearing about the child born with his parents, grandparents, and sister's name on his wrist, immediately placed in state custody. After that, finding a boy with so many "shimuras" on one wrist was easy, and he was already angry to be abandoned and mistreated in a group home. The day he met his bio family was the day he died.

As much as I love "a letter from my friend John" we technically aren't at the point where we're reading letters by characters yet- we're reading his diary.

I am sneaking along in my good friend Jonathon's luggage but it's hard to hear anything from inside the suitcase, so I read his diary after he goes to sleep for the day. He doesn't know I'm here so I obviously can't respond or say anything to him. But I'm so glad to be out of that case in the stuffy carriage, I hope I get a chance to look around Dracula's cool castle later

Wakui should've done more with the bonten arc. Instead of skipping 3 months, he should've put in how Michi's life is in that timeline with Bonten working behind the scenes.

It prob would've gained the manga more popularity and satisfied readers.

While I´m on your side on this, because I really wanted to know more about how the fuck bonten even got a) created b) to the top this fast and c) why a bowling alley, it would have lead us on a little I think. That this is the final arc and not the one after that.

But yeah, how long was the bonten arc exactly?

it started with chapter 189 and ended with chapter 206, minus this said chapter and the one before, 205, because this ones were Hanma´s and Sanzu´s side stories and no real chapters that were significant to the plot.

I had a little too much faith in the current arc and actually hoped that we might get a little more insight on KMG and their relationship but to be honest, the last two arcs feel a little rushed in general.

Especially Takemichi´s inner conflict to involve his friends went from “never will I ever do that” to “lol yes besties let´s kill ourselves” in one fucking chapter -like excuse me are you bipolar or something?

I also hope we at least get to know who this funky dude was. At least give us that Wakui - you can´t just make an arc this interesting and then leave it in your closet to die.

But for real now, while you are right anon, I´m not sure about the whole popularity part because it´s one of the last arcs and I think the rising popularity will come when we get the second season of the anime, like it happend with KNY, jujutsu Kaisen and bnha too. Most of the time the anime hypes the Manga up more, while it´s already finished or near the end.

Still, seeing Takemichi searching for Bonten with Kazutora would have been awesome, getting to see more about future Kazutora and the whole Crew all grown up is just something I wished for since the black dragon arc.

School Briefs I "Notice from School"

OBSERVATIONS, SPECULATIONS AND ASSORTED INFO:

The place in which Todoroki Rei is hospitalized is Fujitani Hospital (藤谷病院 ‘Fujitani Byōin’). Fujitani can be translated as "wisteria valley" and is apparently not a real place. There's a Fujitani clinic (藤谷医院 'Fujitani iin') in Osaka but it's clearly not the same place.

Japanese fans speculated the name comes from one of Horikoshi's assistants, Fujiya (藤谷), whose surname is written the same, though the spelling is different. Honestly I couldn't see any spelling notation for the hospital so it can be we're just spelling it wrong... or I missed the spelling notation.

The hospital is likely not close to the Todoroki home.

In chap 189 Fuyumi and Natsuo in order to return home after visiting their mother take a taxi.

Episode 25 instead shows Shouto had to walk quite a bit, then take a train then walk some more.

OUTSIDE

The best image of the outside of the hospital comes from chap 290 of the manga, in which Horikoshi clearly finalized the design, while we could fist read the hospital's name in chap 187

ENTRANCE

We can only see there are sliding doors in both versions.

RECEPTION

No big changes here the image on the manga is more accurate and shows the nurses also have pc. The ceiling is kind of different.

CORRIDOR

The corridor is mostly the same, the anime only adds a support so people who've to walk through it can support themselves with them.

REI'S ROOM ENTRANCE

The differences between manga and anime are minimal, the window on the door in the manga seems smaller and the sign with Rei's name is different though the number of the room is the same, 315.

REI'S ROOM INSIDE VIEWS

Episode 25 adds some details to Rei's room but changes the type of window... though they'll change it into one that matches the manga in episode 88 (same goes for the desk which also gets changed in one matching the one in the manga). The anime also turns the door into a sliding one. Accessories (a lamp and other controllers) are added on the wall next to Rei's bed only to be removed later on.

I do wonder if the slight wisteria tinge in episode 25 is due to the hospital name... later though it will be removed the head of the bed turned first grey and then brown.

They also first will add a furniture on top of which there's a tv next to Rei's bed, to remove it and replace it with a wardrobe and in an episode we'll see a chair that'll disappear in the following ones.

Long story short, there's no consistency whatsoever in how the anime depicts Rei's room, which becomes particularly evident in Episode 105 in which they change the disposition of the furniture, moving the desk in front of the window and the bed on the other side of the room, changing even the kind of window Rei had (but everything will be back to their places in episode 124)

CEILING

We get some other additional info from "School Briefs".

Fujitani Hospital is described as “…a large white building lit up in shades of orange by the setting sun. The hospital where his mother was institutionalized. Though clinic hours were just about over, the lobby was brimming with patients waiting to check out. Todoroki glanced at the scene as he hurried into an elevator destined for the upper levels. It wasn’t his first time coming here, but the boy noticed how nervous he was as he stared at the floor display, tickling up.”

“The elevator doors slid open quietly, and Todoroki emerged into a corridor bathed in silence, unlike the lobby below. The faint scent of antiseptic common to most hospitals reminded him of his own recent stay…”

“As he passed the nurses’ station, a nurse he’d become acquainted with called out to Todoroki.”

“He had half a mind to ask a question, but the station phone started ringing, so he kept walking.”

We move to Rei's room, for which we only get the story to mention tiny bits of furniture and the fact there's actually a minifridge in the room under the desk.

“With the barred window at her back, a soft smile crept into her eyes, which opened wide.”

““Oh… Nothing, honey. Come on in. Sit,” replied his mother, offering Todoroki her own chair.”

“Todoroki checked the minifridge under the desk and found a few bottles of soft drinks, as well as a yogurt drink with a cartoon cow on the carton, clearly meant for children.”

“As if she’d done it a million times before, Fuyumi stuffed the bundle of clothing onto a shelf.”

And that's all I could find on the place.

I mean can't he just detach and reattach his feathers at will (barring that they don't get, say, burned). basically a fight with dabi is the only real danger to hawks's plan right now so lmao that's probably what's going to happen

huh. maybe! i was under the impression that once he sheds his feathers (aka detaches it from his actual wing), he isn’t able to attach them again. i feel like if he were able to reuse undamaged feathers, then the ones he used to rescue the evacuees from the falling building in the high-end incident would’ve been added back to his wingspan to allow him to keep fighting , but they werent.

not to mention we’ve only ever see him lose wing volume, never add back onto it

Endeavor’s public image and hero society

The thing is, I can totally understand how Endeavor might look admirable from an outsider’s perspective. For a long time, he really was the only one trying to surpass All Might.

But from the perspective of someone who knows the truth, you would know that Endeavor gave up a long time ago. He decided he could never surpass All Might and focused on having a child who could. He didn’t care about self-improvement or going beyond his limits, he just wanted to beat All Might. It was completely petty.

But then Fuyumi says this, and from what happens in the rest of the chapter it seems like the reader is supposed to agree with her. It seems like we’re supposed to see his ambition as a positive trait:

Now that the symbol of peace is retired, Endeavor really is trying to fill that role. And that’s what the rest of the world sees, they see Endeavor who never gives up.

They don’t see someone who stopped trying to overcome his own weaknesses. They don’t see someone who let his ambition and spite drive him to do terrible things. They don’t see the people who are still living with the consequences of his actions.

The way the rest of the country sees it, Endeavor’s ambition is nothing but a good thing. They don’t see the whole truth. And that’s what the villains have been saying this whole time, isn’t it? That there’s something wrong with the hero system, that it’s built on lies and vanity and hypocrisy. This story is about what it means to be a hero, and as we’ve seen with Midoriya and Bakugou, you need both ambition and the desire to save others. The need to always win, to always be the greatest, without the desire to save, leads to heroes like Endeavor and kids like Bakugou.

Growing up in hero society is partially what made Bakugou so awful as a kid. No one ever called him out, because his powerful quirk would make him a powerful hero, and that’s all society cares about. Quirkless people like Midoriya and people with “villainous” quirks like Shinsou are treated pretty terribly. But so far in the series, there hasn’t been much acknowledgement from the heroes that there’s anything wrong, and in order to fix something, you have to admit there’s a problem first.

For me, something about this chapter just felt off, and I think it’s that we’re seeing Endeavor praised for his ambition without much acknowledgement that unchecked ambition is a huge problem. So I think now is the perfect time for the world to find out the full truth of who Endeavor is. Endeavor’s abuse isn’t just a personal matter, it’s the result of hero society and it could easily happen again, as we’ve seen with Bakugou. Thankfully Bakugou isn’t going down the same path as Endeavor, but it would have been so easy for him to turn out the same. Revealing the truth about Endeavor would force hero society to acknowledge the broken parts of the system, which needs to happen at some point in order for things to change for the better.
