Venice Book Fair and Writers Festival 22th-23rd March 2024
Tumblr media
Venice Book Fair and Writers Festival When – March 22th – March 23rd Where – visit their website for more information (https://venicebookfair.com/)
Venice, a city that rises from the lapping waters of the Veneto region in northeastern Italy, is a wonder to behold. Its 117 small islands, connected by a network of captivating canals, are home to historic buildings, bustling shops, and delectable restaurants that all reflect the city’s rich history.
Venice once basked in the golden age of the Renaissance as a major trading center and a hub of artistic and cultural production. Today, the city remains a monument to beauty with its timeless landmarks, such as the magnificent St. Mark’s Square, the stately Doge’s Palace, and the stunning Rialto Bridge.
And let us not forget the graceful gondolas that glide through the waterways, offering a one-of-a-kind adventure for visitors.
Venice has long served as a muse for poets, novelists, and playwrights. Its unique place at the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East has captivated writers for centuries, who have used the city’s rich history, serpentine waterways, and diverse population as inspiration for their works.
The city has also housed literary greats, such as Francesco Petrarca, who co-founded the Renaissance humanist movement, and Giorgio Baffo, who chronicled the city’s lively customs in the 18th century.
In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Venice was a hub for artistic and literary salons, where writers, artists, and intellectuals from all corners of Europe gathered to exchange ideas and create.
Today, the Venice Book Fair and Writers Festival continues this legacy of literary richness, uniting storytellers and book lovers from around the world to celebrate the magic of the written word...Continue reading

Currently imagining a future in which I filed the serial numbers off The Valley of the End or In Times of Peace and got a book deal.
The world of publishing is so damn grim now. The industry seems to have forgotten that part of its job is marketing debut authors!
Sometimes it feels like, if you don't bring an established audience to them, they don't want you. Simple as that.

Hi, so you said that Iron Widow has really bad gender politics, what did you mean? I heard some pretty rave reviews for the book and was considering picking it up so that's pretty disappointing
Here is my full review (please read) also my most popular book review I've written.
There is a lot of genuine feeling in Iron Widow and well-met rage. A potent power-fantasy with earnest fury, but like all power fantasies, it can be ego-obsessed to the point it obscures the functions of power itself. The overwriting, simplistic ideology, and poor storytelling are just . . . not good. This isn't a good book.
The individualist framework of feminism and "Single Strong Man" version of history is reductive. Zetian comes up with her Empowered Thought by herself. The storyline provides no female friends or female mentors or many good things to say about women outside of Zetian. In real life, feminism and other movements are fueled by community organization and institutional push-back using collective action. I mean, did you enter into feminism on your own? Or are you standing on the shoulders of giants? History is much more of a passing of the baton than anything.
Women, obviously, can suck too and reinforce the patriarchy, but also I love them and women are wonderful and I just don't care for these kinds of individualistic rhetoric that puts on the skin of feminism without actually thinking deeply about it or embodying the reality of its work.
The narrative is self-justifying via the clothing of feminist rhetoric, but internal monologuing does not a revolutionary make.
On a technical level, the writing itself is a bizarre combination of overwriting and underwriting. I found myself gliding over entire paragraphs since there's just metaphors with no purpose stacked on top of each other. Somehow things are described without being developed. Telling instead of showing is a big issue as the relationships, plot, and worldbuilding are all told to the audience instead of shown. It was written like a movie instead of a novel.
Finally, this book is supposed to take inspiration from Pacific Rim and anime and have feminism at the forefront, but they're not even going to give me a little power of female friendship? As a treat? :(

Case in point about quality/people eating it up, the aforementioned author posted two snippets of her book where the story hasn’t even started yet but there’s a missing word and a typo because she seems to think she’s beyond needing an editor. Mistakes happen but come on. In the first sentence of your dedication? Maybe other people don’t mind but it’s not a selling point for a book to me and believe me, the rest of the book is like that too. Every bit of it I’ve ever seen has had an issue, from typos, to missing words, to character name continuity.

Some random Massachusetts teacher found my old Reading Rec post on Ray Bradbury's short story "The Pedestrian" from May 2021 and put it on their Schoology as a class assignment, I guess. I have no idea if this person follows me on any of my social media or if they read any of my other work? Do they realize the absolutely ridiculous impact this is having on my notes?

(This is the track of views per day for the past year btw)
Anyway. Uh. If you're reading this, I hope your class enjoyed the lesson today <3

Would also like to point out as an author you shouldn't screenshot random criticism and post it to your social media platform and then punch down at others for having legit criticism regarding how a book is marketed

Ok so, in what I assume to be a desperate last ditch effort to draw readers to the platform, Amazon just announced that "eligible readers" (it is unclear what the eligibility requirements are) can use Kindle Vella free from October 5 - 11 at up to 100 chapters per day.
A Hollow Contract is still on there & I might compile a list of stories and authors worth checking out so you all don't have to sift through all the garbage! :) Btw, authors still get paid for reads in this period & probably get higher bonuses if you drop a follow/like/whatever.

Book Writing | 10 Essential Tips for Beginner Book Writing
Tumblr media
Embarking on the journey of book writing a book can be both exhilarating and daunting for beginners. Whether your goal is to write a non-fiction piece, memoir, or novel, navigating the complexities of the writing process takes commitment and careful planning. We’ll look at ten crucial pointers in this post to help aspiring authors succeed in the literary world.
Find Your Writing Space
uncovering your perfect writing place is like uncovering a treasure trove when it comes to book writing. Your creativity and productivity can be significantly impacted by your surroundings. Start by experimenting with different environments, such as a quiet park bench, a busy café, or a quaint spot at home.
Try out various atmospheric conditions until you discover one that piques your interest. Always keep in mind that your working area should be a haven designed to suit your needs, devoid of outside distractions, and brimming with ideas. You provide the groundwork for the success of your writing endeavors by defining this holy area.
Set Achievable Goals
Setting attainable goals serves as the compass that leads all prospective writers through the huge sea of invention in the exciting voyage that is book writing. When you set out on your literary journey, don’t forget to divide your overall objective of finishing a book into achievable milestones.
Each step you take towards realizing your goal of being a published author, whether it’s planning out chapters, creating daily word counts, or dedicating specific writing periods, will help you get there. Setting attainable goals helps you stay on track and celebrate your accomplishments, which will rekindle your enthusiasm and dedication to finishing your book.
Develop Your Characters
When it comes to writing books, creating characters that people will want to read about is crucial. Every character should be carefully developed, with depth, weaknesses, and goals that your audience can relate to. Describe their goals, history, and character attributes first in order to develop multifaceted characters that readers can relate to on an emotional level.
As the story progresses, demonstrate their development by letting them overcome obstacles and change naturally. Keep in mind that your book’s characters are its heart and soul since they propel the plot forward. By investing effort in their development, you may create a story that draws readers in and holds their attention throughout.
Outline Your Plot
Writing a successful novel starts with developing an engaging plot. Plot out your story in detail before you start writing your novel. This story map will help you navigate the turns and turns of your story, maintaining continuity and drawing readers in from beginning to end.
Start by jotting down important story points and character arcs, and then arrange them into a well-organized framework. In addition to streamlining your writing process, this blueprint gives you direction and focus as you write your book. Make an investment in this fundamental stage, and observe how your story takes on a clear, purposeful development....Continue reading

Flying pigs and being human.
Knowing how you feel, what you think and being able to talk clearly about it is an important skill to cultivate. This is true for everyone and especially true for anyone trying to do anything creative. Creativity comes from a regular habit of observing the world and listening to yourself to your own thoughts and feelings. Creativity comes from trusting your own voice. Creativity comes from…
