atla spam content as promised
so like obviously kataang is the superior ship and im so happy they end up together bc they’re right for each other and fate and love and goodness. But. Like. Zutara just has that fire. Passion. Intrigue. Enemies to lovers. So much to unpack there. Do I think kataang should be canon endgame? Yes. Of course. Will that stop me from shipping the fuck out of Zutara? Not in a million years.
Also I dont ship zukka but ppl who do are cool as fuck shoutout to y’all

Hobie is the Team Dad of the Spiderband the same way Katara is the Team Mom of the Gaang. They are absolutely NOT adults and should never be treated like it and it's not 'incest' to ship them with their teammates because they're not their actual parents either by blood or adoption and again, are literally in the same age group as them but they're way more mature than they should be due to brutalizing trauma that forced them to grow up too fast in order to survive so they feel the need to make good out of it by taking care of and looking out for other kids since they know how to,plus it's canon that the Gaang teases Katara for acting maternal and that Hobie took Gwen in after her abusive dad kicked her out for being trans-I mean Spiderwoman and you can bet your ass Hobie is the cook of his squad like Katara is her's.Idk how to end this actually uuuuuhhhhh fuck Zutara the shippers are extremely mean and superior over a ship that has no leg to stand on and Katara isn't Zuko's mom because she's his sister, stan Zukka instead

Look I'm a bitch I saw someone say Zukka shippers are degenerates because most of the fics are just smut whereas a Certain Other Ship Involving Another Blue-coded character with Zuko had far lesser of such hEiNoUs content and I subjected myself to horrors and ran the numbers.
They're pretty much identical percentages. No joke. 11%. Both times.
This is not to say Zukka shippers are better, or one ship is superior or anything. I think it's time we all accept we're in the same boat of fanon and move on and pretend the thing we don't like doesn't exist and move on with our lives.

wait hold on a ursa takes both zuko and azula away fic??? idk how anyone hasn’t done this concept but hella you’ve tapped into a concept that has to be explored at this point! making it zukka is also just the norm around here too.
ah im glad you like the sound of it! i refuse to believe im the first to think of that idea bc i dont think ive ever had an original thought but there's definitely a lack of ursa exploration in the fandom. the thing with this wip is that it's going to be so ginormous and so multi-faceted that it's actually really hard to explain the plot of? like ursa takes zuko and azula with her but ursa is so damaged by what she's been through and is too busy prioritising survival to be loving anymore and their life on the run is so brutal that zuko and azula - still only 9 and 11 years old which is a big reason of why their relationship is able to heal, bc they're still so young - really lean on each other to cope. initially it's a survival thing, but they grow to just genuinely get on well with and care deeply about each other. and one way they do that is that zuko starts telling azula stories! like the two of them become huge avatar nerds bc of these stories and actually i might just give you a snippet bc this is rlly hard to explain LMAO
Neither of them had any idea how to just be nice to each other, but Zuko wanted to be nice. He wanted Azula to be safe. He wanted to protect her. She was his little sister. She always had been, and she needed him. Now, more than ever.
“You know, Mother used to tell me about our great-grandfather.” Zuko said quietly into the shadows, a whisper to ensure Ursa, always so quick to anger these days, didn’t wake up. “You know he was Avatar Roku?”
For a while, it was painfully silent, to the point Zuko was certain Azula wouldn't respond. Then; “Of course I know. Some of us actually paid attention in our lessons.” Azula sniped, but she sounded a little too cutting, in a way she only sounded when she was unsure. She didn’t like it when she didn’t know what Zuko was leading to.
Zuko turned to face her direction, the cheap blanket scratching his chin and not covering all of his body. At eleven-years-old, Zuko was finally starting to grow into himself.
They were in a town on the outskirts of the Earth Kingdom, barely a speck on the map, and currently, their names were Riku and Aoi. Ursa has been very clear; her children were to never use their birthnames, no matter how alone they thought they were. They were living in a cottage with half a roof, their mother funding the rent by sewing patches onto dresses for a seamstress. She was barely in the house, but Zuko knew even when they left in a few day’s time – as they never stayed in one place longer than a week or two – he would still barely see Ursa. He wondered if she knew how reclusive she’d become.
“She told me stories about all the Avatars. I always wished she’d tell you them too.” Zuko said a little sadly. “I never understood why she didn’t.”
This silence was different, and they both knew Zuko wasn’t just talking about the stories.
“Tell me.” Azula breathed, so quiet Zuko almost missed it.
“The stories?” Zuko asked in surprise. He had been waiting for Azula to cut him down, to tell him to go away like she used to. But...
He realised maybe Azula wanted to be nice too. Maybe she was tired of being looked at like a monster by the people supposed to love her.
Maybe she was just a nine-year-old girl who needed a bedtime story every now and then.
“Yes, Zuko.” Azula hissed, and his name was so shocking it was like a curse. “The stories. Tell me about the Avatars.”
So, Zuko did.
“Water, earth, fire, air.” Zuko whispered, remembering how Mother told it. In the shadows, Azula’s eyes burned gold. “Long ago, the four nations lived together, but everything changed when the Fire Nation, the superior nation, began to share its wealth. The Hundred Year War began, and the only person able to stand in the Fire Nation’s way was the Avatar, master of all four elements. But when the world called for him, he fled...”
It became a tradition, after that. Zuko would lie beside his sister on the nights neither of them could sleep, and after an entire day of hiding himself, he’d turn to Azula and just talk. In Kyoshi Island, he told her of Avatar Kyoshi murdering Chin the Great. In Makapu village, he told her of Avatar Roku – Great-Grandfather Roku – battling a volcano. And in the Western Air Temple, he told her of the Avatar who never was.
“He’s out there somewhere, though.” Zuko uttered wondrously. “One-hundred-and-twelve, the last airbender. Can you imagine it?”
“You’re in your head too much.” Azula sighed. She always pretended not to care, but as the months dragged on, she allowed herself more. First, it was in her asking for a specific story. Then sometimes, she’d slip up and laugh. In the fragments of these nights handed over to ancient legends, as scraps of lies left behind in their wake with every new roof they found themselves beneath, Azula was more herself than ever. She could be, in front of her big brother. That was something she learned.
They learned other things, too. They learned that the Earth Kingdom was starving, that the Fire Nation was hated, that people weren’t rebelling; they were suffering. The story changed. When Zuko saw technological advancements that bewildered him in the Northern Air Temple, he stopped saying that the Fire Nation was the superior nation. When he saw children with burn scars and amputated limbs, he changed ‘began to share its wealth’ to ‘attacked.’ When the stories he told his little sister of the Avatar turned into a lifeline, a speck of hope in a world of ashes, ‘fled’ became ‘vanished.’
Zuko learned that a war was a war, that his father was not a hero by any means, that they got out just in time.
And it was hard, but the two had their own rebellions. Zuko and Azula didn’t get on in Caldera, but out here with a string of fake identities behind them and a death sentence at the end of it, they only had each other. Their mother was a wound, their father was a blade, and they were, through it all, still just kids. They leaned on each other in the places they used to bruise. Azula took the softness she tortured her brother over and began to protect it. Zuko took the coldness in his sister he used to despise and chased it away. When Azula drew the curtains and hid in cupboards to hold a flame in her palm and just breathe, Zuko made sure Ursa didn’t catch her. When Zuko lay beside Azula and talked to her until she finally fell asleep, Azula didn't push him away.
Azula, he whispered, and it was a promise that she could still be who she wanted to be.
Zuko, she breathed back, and it was a recognition that, through it all, she still saw him.
#the relevance of these avatar stories is that azula has heard them since she was nine years old#like it's a real theme in the fic that azula adapts to their life on the run a LOT easier than zuko and it's because she's#just the right side of too young when they run away that she forgets a lot of what life was like in the fire nation#her personality IS this new life whereas zuko still remembers a lot of their old life and is very haunted by it all#and hates all the lies and having to deny who he really is#and one thing azula builds her personality around - bc of her age - is the avatar thanks to these stories#she seriously hero-worships the avatar which is relevant bc two years after they ran away#zuko gets caught by soldiers and brought back to ozai... when he is thirteen... same age he was in the canon agni kai....#and ozai burns him same as canon to try get info bc ozai has a VENDETTA against ursa now and is determined to drag them all back#but zuko is actually really clever and LIES and says he has something better for ozai: he knows where the avatar is#so ozai sends zuko off at 13 to bring him the avatar! same as canon! and he sends iroh bc iroh has been clever and stayed ozai's ally#this whole time while working quietly with the white lotus to try and get ursa and the kids back#so ozai trusts him and sends him with zuko to spy on him effectively#so their three years together looking for the avatar is basically the exact same as in canon down to iroh trying to get through to zuko#AND MEANWHILE azula wants to find zuko but she doesnt know how until she hears that the avatar is back#her hero is alive and out there and if anyone can find her brother it'll be the avatar#so she joins the gaang! and zuko follows them and azula leaves him little clues and zuko puts off capturing aang bc he needs to get azula!#but they dont acc all unite until ba sing se and how do they do that? bc zuko starts blue spiriting and he meets sokka#so yeah. it's complicated. there's also a revolution in ba sing se that zukka started SKJHGKSJH it's all a mess#but we get protective big brother zuko and badass sokka and azula mummy issues exploration it's all so fun#ask#also i dont like the writing of this extract bc i wrote it literal YEARS ago like i started this wip before i did my fucking a-levels#so if the writing seems shitty that's my business

zukka and destiel like unlearning your powerful father’s bullshit indoctrination and your sibling(s) trying to kill you for defying Him and then jailbreaks and saving his family and its the older sibling without the powers being sooo special to someone who seems so superior to an outsider

What are some "problematic" ships you like?
do you really want to know because I have some really problematic ships? If so I'll tell you. A lot of them have age differences. Sometimes big ones. A lot of them are with evil people. And a lot of them aren't straight. And lot of them are just plain, well taboo. This will probably be long so stop reading if you don't want to read an essay.
My problematic ships:
Tumblr media
Roy Mustang x Edward Elric Fullmetal Alchemist: ok really problematic straight out of the gate. Not only because of age difference but also because Roy Mustang is technically Ed's boss/superior officer in the military. Not that Ed fully listens to everything Roy says. And Roy constantly teases him about it. Roy is also snake but someone trying to change things for the better. He's also has done a lot of bad things. But so has Ed. They are both to messed up people trying to fix things they've done wrong and they are both intimately aware of that about each other. They both are incredibly brilliant and have in common the type of powers they use. You need to watch Fullmetal Alchemist 2003 to understand(not brotherhood. 2003 first) they are not canon but the canon ships bore me and lack any real romance so there you go.
Tumblr media
Luz Noceda x Philip Wittebane: I know I know! This one is really fucked up. So fucked up. And Lunter is my otp. Believe me I know. But I have a dark fascination for this ship. Especially considering every interaction Luz and Philip had. And how much they have in common.. Like this my go to ship for when I want angst and trauma and just to see a dumpster fire. When I want Luz angst. I love Lunter. If Lunter is my happy ending, this ship is if I want tragedy and bad endings. This my depression ship!
Tumblr media
Zuko x Happiness avatar the last airbender(anyone who is not Mai because she honestly sucked.) I am not a Mai fan. She is a horrible written character to me personally. And just horrible for Zuko. I mostly love any Zuko ship that has a water tribe sibling in it. But now a days that seems too toxic for people. You can look up the reasons in the anti zutara, anti zukka, anti zuko tag. But Zuko is my favorite character. Anything that gives him happiness makes me happy. Over all this mostly seems toxic because of Zukos past and family. But he had a redemption arc. One of the best. He deserves some happiness as he works hard to change things as fire lord.
Tumblr media
Lunter/Luz x Hunter: You understand this needs no explanation. You know the owl house Fandom.
Tumblr media
Dipper x Bill gravity falls: Yeah this one is really really bad. I think I have a really messed up taste for romance. Especially where age difference comes into play? Maybe I'm a masochist? Who knows. But I have a soft spot for adhd/autistic characters with older/immortal people. I have a soft spot for immortals/dangerous people protecting said autistic/adhd people.
Tumblr media
Bakudeku my hero academia : I have a soft spot for redeemed bullies who actually put in the work to change. One of my favorite movies was a walk to remember.
Just in general a running theme I seem to have in a lot of my problematic ships:
Tumblr media
age difference
Tumblr media
Gay
Tumblr media
power imbalance
Tumblr media
In love with the Bully
Tumblr media
In love with the villian
Tumblr media
And sometimes its just plain taboo, toxic, or just un healthy. But I love it!

I can't remember what year it was but I remember for the top 100 ships on tumblr Zukka beat Zvtara by a very large margin.
That was around the time I started to actively dislike Zvtara and I must admit...I slept well at night knowing Zukka dethroned Zvtara. It's karma! Zvtara may still be an insanely popular non-canon ship...Quite possibly the most popular m/f non-canon ship. But it's really telling how more and more people actively dislike zvtara now.
And why not? Zvtara isn't as deep as these obsessive fans think! I have been in this fandom since 2007! A lot of people shipped ZK just because they feel Zuko is "more attractive" than Aang. That ain't deep, that's shallow!
I would have been thrilled about that if it wasn't a result of Zukka temporarely becoming Zutara 2.0, pretending it was TOTALLY the superior ship, with lots of subtext, foreshadowing, and calling anyone who didn't like it homophobic.
It was hell. One large portion of the fandom being insanely annoying was already bad enough, we did NOT need two. Thank God that at least for Zukka it was temporary and most people either jumped ship or calmed the fuck down.
Zutara meanwhile, is still as annoying and loud as ever. And like you said, they go on and on about how "deep" their ship is, yet the only reason it grew so popular was because Zuko was hot, plenty of young girls were crushing on him HARD, and projected onto Katara to essentially date Zuko through her - and thus they were mad to realize that no, the show wasn't going to throw away basic logic just to give them what they wanted.
You can't call your ship "deep" and say it was "robbed" when 95% of those meaningful, romantic interactions exist solely in fanfiction and not in the actual show you're claiming did it dirty.
Their tendency of acting like Zutara was an epic romance that was totally playing out on screen doesn't just show how shallow they are, but it's also straight up delusional. HOW was it "all there all along" when they didn't have any meaningful interaction or even thought about each other at all until the very end of the show?

Why do Zukka shippers think they're superior for shipping a gay couple when they keep applying heterosexual dynamics to their ship? There's so much mpreg and A/B/O. Impregnation via sex is literally the MOST heterosexual dynamic in existence. Why don't they just ship a straight couple instead? I don't get it. I'm not into yaoi but tbh a lot of their m/m ships act just like straight couples...but both of them dudes so its more progressive? I wonder if its like, they have some internalized misogyny - like a shame over their female bodies and reading about two men going at it allows them to distance themselves from the female body more. Idk kinda rambling here but a lot of them do seem to struggle with relating to women or they don't want to.

the zukko/katara/aang of it all. The only ship to ever be
Hmmmmm.... Will need to think on this. I've never been super invested in Kataang, and I've always been a Zutara-anti cause I'm a contrarian about certain ships lmao (I like their friendship though). But come let Zukka into your heart the SUPERIOR team avatar ship !!!!!!!!!

I mean, since we're at it, could you maybe talk about the double standard between that fandom’s treatment of Zukka and their treatment of Zutara? Cause I'm personally fine with both ships, but I do sense some differences in the fandom's acceptance of each one, I just can't pinpoint them precisely beyond the fact that Zutara gets much more shitted on.
Ooh boy I’m just gonna be getting in trouble today.
No I’m kidding, but you’re absolutely right, this is something that should be talked about, and what it boils down to is this: Zutara has been a very popular, staple ship of the fandom for over a decade. Close to fifteen years, actually, cause I’m pretty sure it started really picking up steam about halfway through book 1. Over the last few years I noticed a smattering of support for Zukka, though by far the more popular m/m ship was Jetko (and, ironically, more Jetko fans seemed inclined to HC both boys as bi rather than insisting Zuko is gay, making that new trend feel much more like an attempt to discredit Zutara than actually believing there’s evidence for it), but nothing to the degree that there is now.
Something that still existed, however, was this odd insistence--from Zukka shippers!--that Zutara was problematic and racist. What’s interesting about that is, the reasons they trot out for this--Zuko tried to kill her, Zuko’s people colonized*/genocided hers, the Fire Nation killed her mom, they hated each other for most of the series, etc--also apply to Zukka. Zuko tried to ‘kill’ Sokka just as much as Katara (which is to say, not at all, because he never actually tried to kill any of the gaang**, but that’s beside the point), Zuko’s people killed Sokka’s people, the Fire Nation killed Sokka’s mom, Zuko and Sokka hated each other for most of the series (although, notably, Sokka didn’t have a single empathetic moment of connection with Zuko prior to the completion of his redemption arc when he joined the gaang; Katara did, though! as did Aang, although in that case it wasn’t returned or well-received by Zuko), etc.
So, what’s the only difference? Let me think.
The unfortunate reality is, what this comes across as saying is that ‘it’s only ok to ship an oppressor/colonizer with their victim if it’s gay’. That is, needless to say, really not a good look. And the truly baffling thing is, none of this ‘discourse’ is necessary. Literally no one would care about Zukka’s newfound popularity right now if they weren’t trying to take some stance of moral superiority over Zutara, like Sokka somehow isn’t literally Katara’s brother and from the same damn family and culture.
If you don’t like Zutara, that’s fine and valid and good. If you ship/prefer Zukka, that’s fine and valid and good. If you say ‘shipping Zutara is racist and problematic, how dare you pair a victim with her oppressor, now fuck off and let me draw Zuko and Sokka making out’??? Congratulations, you’re not just an asshole, you’re a hypocrite.
* although the water tribes were never actually colonized. the earth kingdoms were, but the fire nation never made colonies in either of the water tribes--which isn’t to say what they did wasn’t horrific, it was still genocide, but words mean things, and this one does not apply.
** with the exception of that one time he hired an assassin, but that was super ooc and we don’t talk about that in this house
