Catalog graphic design|Catalog printing services|Online catalog design|Catalog design agency|Best catalog designers
Tumblr media
Catalog graphic design is a specialized area of graphic design that involves creating visually appealing and organized layouts for catalogs. Catalogs are printed or digital publications that showcase a collection of products, services, or information in a structured and visually engaging manner. Effective catalog graphic design aims to present information in a way that is easy to understand, aesthetically pleasing, and encourages readers to explore the contents further.
Here are some key elements and considerations in catalog graphic design:
Layout and Structure: Designers focus on arranging content, such as product images, descriptions, prices, and specifications, in a logical and visually pleasing manner. Clear hierarchy and grid systems are often used to organize information.
Typography: Choosing appropriate fonts and text styles is crucial for legibility and conveying the brand's tone. Consistent typography helps maintain a professional and cohesive look throughout the catalog.
Color Scheme: A consistent color palette that aligns with the brand identity helps create a cohesive and visually appealing design. Colors can also be used strategically to highlight important information or create visual interest.
Imagery: High-quality images of products or services are essential to showcase details and entice customers. Images should be properly edited and optimized for print or digital formats.
Whitespace: Effective use of whitespace (empty space) helps prevent clutter and enhances the overall visual appeal. It also makes the catalog easier to read and navigate.
Branding: Incorporating the company's logo, brand colors, and other visual elements helps reinforce brand identity and recognition.
Product Organization: Grouping similar products together and using consistent labeling or categorization makes it easier for readers to find what they're looking for.
Call to Action: Encouraging readers to take action, such as making a purchase or visiting a website, is important. Clear and strategically placed calls to action guide readers on what steps to take next.
Consistency: Maintaining a consistent design style and visual language throughout the catalog helps create a unified and professional look.
Print vs. Digital: Consider whether the catalog will be printed or distributed digitally. Print catalogs may require higher resolution images and specific color profiles, while digital catalogs may include interactive elements.
User Experience: For digital catalogs, usability and navigation are key. Interactive features like clickable links, zoomable images, and search functionality enhance the user experience.
Page Flow: Designers should ensure a logical flow from one page to the next, guiding readers through the catalog's content seamlessly.

NASA's Roman team selects survey to map our galaxy's far side
NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope team has announced plans for an unprecedented survey of the plane of our Milky Way galaxy. It will peer deeper into this region than any other survey, mapping more of our galaxy's stars than all previous observations combined.
"There's a really broad range of science we can explore with this type of survey, from star formation and evolution to dust in between stars and the dynamics of the heart of the galaxy," said Catherine Zucker, an astrophysicist at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian in Cambridge, Massachusetts, who co-authored a white paper describing some of the benefits of such an observing program.
A galactic plane survey was the top-ranked submission following a 2021 call for Roman survey ideas. Now, the scientific community will work together to design the observational program ahead of Roman's launch by May 2027.
"There will be lots of trade-offs since scientists will have to choose between, for example, how much area to cover and how completely to map it in all the different possible filters," said paper co-author Robert Benjamin, an astronomer at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.
While the details of the survey remain to be determined, scientists say if it covered about 1,000 square degrees—a region of sky as large as 5,000 full moons—it could reveal well over 100 billion cosmic objects (mainly stars).
"That would be pretty close to a complete census of all the stars in our galaxy, and it would only take around a month," said Roberta Paladini, a senior research scientist at Caltech/IPAC in Pasadena, California, and the white paper's lead author. "It would take decades to observe such a large patch of the sky with the Hubble or James Webb space telescopes. Roman will be a survey machine."
Milky Way anatomy
Observatories with smaller views of space have provided exquisite images of other galaxies, revealing complex structures. But studying our own galaxy's anatomy is surprisingly difficult. The plane of the Milky Way covers such a large area on the sky that studying it in detail can take a very long time. Astronomers also must peer through thick dust that obscures distant starlight.
While we've studied our solar system's neighborhood well, Zucker says, "We have a very incomplete view of what the other half of that Milky Way looks like beyond the galactic center."
Observatories like NASA's retired Spitzer Space Telescope have conducted large-area surveys of the galactic plane in longer wavelengths of light and revealed some star-forming regions on the far side of the galaxy. But it couldn't resolve fine details like Roman will do.
"Spitzer set up the questions that Roman will be able to solve," Benjamin said.
Roman's combination of a large field of view, crisp resolution, and the ability to peer through dust make it the ideal instrument to study the Milky Way. And seeing stars in different wavelengths of light—optical and infrared—will help astronomers learn things such as the stars' temperatures. That one piece of information unlocks much more data, from the star's evolutionary stage and composition to its luminosity and size.
"We can do very detailed studies of things like star formation and the structure of our own galaxy in a way that we can't do for any other galaxy," Paladini said.
Roman will offer new insights about the structure of the central region known as the bulge, the "bar" that stretches across it, and the spiral arms that extend from it.
"We'll basically rewrite the 3D picture of the far side of the galaxy," Zucker said.
Roman's sharp vision will help astronomers see individual stars even in stellar nurseries on the far side of the galaxy. That will help Roman generate a huge new catalog of stars since it will be able to map 10 times farther than previous precision mapping by ESA's (the European Space Agency's) Gaia space mission.
Gaia mapped over 1 billion stars in 3D, largely within about 10,000 light-years. Roman could map up to 100 billion stars 100,000 light-years away or more (stretching out to the most distant edge of our galaxy and beyond).
The Galactic Plane Survey is Roman's first announced general astrophysics survey—one of several observation programs Roman will do in addition to its three core community surveys and Coronagraph technology demonstration.
At least 25% of Roman's five-year primary mission will be allocated to general astrophysics surveys in order to pursue science that can't be done with only the mission's core community survey data. Astronomers from all over the world will have the opportunity to use Roman and propose cutting-edge research, enabling the astronomical community to utilize the full potential of Roman's capabilities to conduct extraordinary science.
The work is published on the arXiv preprint server.
TOP IMAGE....The plane of our Milky Way galaxy, as seen by ESA’s Gaia space mission. It contains more than a billion stars, along with darker, dusty regions Gaia couldn’t see through. With its greater sensitivity and longer wavelength coverage, NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope’s galactic plane survey will peer through more of the dust and reveal far more stars. Credit: ESA/Gaia/DPAC
LOWER IMAGE....This image shows two views of the same spiral galaxy, called IC 5332, as seen by two NASA observatories – the James Webb Space Telescope’s observations appear at the top left and the Hubble Space Telescope’s at the bottom right. The views are mainly so different due to the wavelengths of light they each showcase. Hubble’s visible and ultraviolet observation features dark regions where dust absorbs those types of light. Webb sees longer wavelengths and detects that dust glowing in infrared. But neither could conduct an efficient survey of our Milky Way galaxy because it covers so much sky area; since IC 5332 is around 30 million light-years away, it appears as a small spot. It would take Hubble or Webb decades to survey the Milky Way, but NASA’s upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope could do it in less than a month. Me in a nutshell. sorry guys, I could not find a movie reference for this one nailing the date pace killed me, I wanted to be organic, but not boring, but comical, but not too much, and here comes cass/mor screams into the void so here's a pretty pic of breadticks 😬
Enjoy. Comments are welcomed and cherished :)

Part 5: Not the girl you are used to
 “No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
“No.”
“Do you honestly believe you can trick me into saying yes?”
Cassian grinned like an idiot, thumb swiftly skating on his phone keyboard, texting God knows who. “You used to fall for that.”
One would think he wasn’t so interest in the conversation, but Azriel knew his brother, could read the tension on his unstoppable tapping feet, the nervous twirl of the watch on his wrist, the childish attempt to beat him by exhaustion. Azriel ignored him. Cass could try all he wanted, but he was not agreeing to this insanity.
Tablet perched on his knee, he continued to work through a selection of garment choices for the winner of the Revelation Designer Award to choose from.
You see, Azriel didn’t believe in unpredictable events, because that would mean he wasn’t prepared for the “incident” happening, and Azriel was always prepared. In order to be ready, he spent a copious amount of time building back-up plans, which had proven to came in had along the years. His, wasn’t the least stressful way of managing a department, but sure was an efficient one. Needless to say he had nearly to none free time. Cassian, on the other hand, seemed to have a lot to spare, deciding to dedicate a part of his day into trying to annoy Azriel to submission.
Azriel had no interested in satisfying his brother’s current itch. A cunning, blond haired itch, who he also had no intention of getting involved with anymore. That’s why he was using this meaningless reunion - more of a one-on-one with his brother - to look through the strongest candidates’ portfolios, selecting D-Day outfits.
“Come one man, you are not thinking this straight. She’s the hottest model these days, runway elite.” Cassian moved forward, pushing a video of Morrigan in Azriel’s face, braving her latest runway in goddamn lacy red lingerie. Her color. Nope, do not go there. “She’ll be a good addition to our catalog.”
Azriel averted his eyes, crossing a giant ‘X’ in the current dress with a little more strength than necessary, the pen scratching the glass. Nope. He’d not be looking either.
“Hiring her for a sporadic shoot is doable, signing an exclusivity contract is dumb, a waste of money. She’s a runaway model, we’d have to compensate her that, pay her contract breaching, pay her even when she’s not working. You are the money man Cass, you know is not worth it.”
“She’s so fucking hot, tho. Trust me when I say she’ll raise our sales. Who wouldn’t want to see a hot girl getting delivery to their home monthly? Hell, I’d sign our magazine.”
"You don't sign our magazine?"
"Why would I sign our magazine?"
Azriel rubbed his forehead, the familiar pressure of a stress-induced headache making itself know.
That’s why his brother managed the money, not the people. The only people he got involved with, were the ones with an ass he was interested in tapping. And that is why he was pushing Azriel to sign an exclusivity contract with Morringan, as if they were a fucking model agency. Cassian might have the CEO position, but thankfully their grandfather left them the same amount of shares. Over his dead body he’d bring Morrigan closer.
“Marinos isn’t about hotness. We are a fashion magazine, Cass. A collection doesn’t sell itself simply by being clothes, is all about how we display them, the ambience, the models. It’s an art of luring the public into seeing themselves in the pages. We have to be diverse, keep it fresh.
“She is fresh!” Cassian argued, leaving his phone on the small table between them, tapping aggressively on the screen, the video rolling. “Look at her. She approaching that milf zone which makes her extra bangable to horny teens.” He held his hands up, palms flat in the air, making the universal sign of a balance. “They enhance their spank bank; we double our sales. It’s a win-win.”
Azriel slapped his brother’s phone face down, his disdain palpable. How Cass could address to someone, who he claimed to be in a serious relationship with, in such a way, was beyond him.
“You are disgusting. And she doesn’t have kids.”
Cassian laughed. “You don’t need kids to be a milf, baby bro,” he enunciated the words as if Azriel was slow. “You only need to be past a women’s prime, which we all know is in her twenties, and still be freakishly hot. Have you seen Mor? Check and check. We like to pretend they are a hot mom without the burden of a bastard running around.” Cassian winked, taking his phone. “Besides, Mor won’t be working much longer. I counting on you to help me make her retirement transition easier.”
Azriel stiffed on his chair.
Morrigan was doing what?
Bubbling laughter erupted from him, tears sliding down the corners of his eyes. Cassian stared at him as if he was insane. My god, he didn't laugh like this in ages. Morrigan would never retire, she loved her job more than life itself. That girl would probably die in a runway, her stone-cold heart finishing its complete transition into a block of ice.
"Are you having a stroke?" Cassin asked, confused.
“Did she tell you that? Did she say she was retiring?”
“She doesn’t have to tell everything, baby bro. Her man knowns.” Her man thought he leashed the untamable Morrigan. Her man knew shit. “She’s turning 34 soon,” Azriel knew that already, they were the same age, “it’s time.”
"Time for what?"
"For her retirement."
“You are so full of shit. Morrigan won't retire, she loves her job.” It’s the only thing she loves. “She won’t quit. She’ll never quit.”
Cassian slouched on the chair, spreading his legs to assert dominance.
“You are full of opinions about Mor today.”
“We were childhood friends. I believe I can judge her inability to drop her career for a man.”
The brothers have met Morrigan when they first moved to America to live with their grandparents. Their grandma quickly pairing Mor and Azriel in the same classes and extracurricular activities. Cassian was around too, but didn’t had much interest for the younger girl in pigtails running around with his brother. She sure had his attention now, wheater she liked it or not.
“Trust me, Mor is settling down. She has a man now, a provider, no need to tire herself crossing the globe all year long. Don’t give me that face. I’m telling you how man thinks.”
“I am a man.” Azriel stressed.
“You are, aren’t you. For a second there I had my doubts.” Cassian mused, remembering how he caught his brother getting cozy with Elain inside the elevator, their ride from hell…
Cassian scratched his stubble, contemplating the recent changes in Azriel's behavior.
His stoic brother, who could not get along with any women introduced to him, scaring them away with his blunt remarks and cold indifference, had been uncharacteristically catering to the girl who used to eye-fuck Cassian from across the room, giving him sunny smiles and entertaining him with dirty jokes. Now her looks where few and further apart, Elain hiding her snort behind her hand instead of giving him a full belly laughter, avoid responding to his innuendos with something dirtier, as she usually would. An unexplainable queasiness twisted in his stomach.
“Speaking of being a man. You and Lainy,”
"Elain.” Azriel corrected with annoyance. “Her name is Elain, not this ridiculous nasal stretch you do.”
“You and Lainy are close now, huh.” Cassian repeated the nickname to spite him, tapping his fingers rhythmically on the arm rest. “Close enough for you to take her home… mouth fuck under the moonlight...”
“Jesus Christ.” Azriel rubbed his face, wishing to be anywhere but here. “Your vocabulary is superb Cass, keep it up.”
“What? You were the one dry humping the girl in front of everyone.”
“No one was dry humping, your sick fuck. I don’t know what you do in your relationship, but us, normal folks, we can kiss for the sake of it, no hidden agenda.” Azriel was not cut out for the lifestyle his brother led. To kiss and bed anyone without knowing where their mouths and body might have been before? No thank you. Hard pass.
“You seriously dating the girl?” Azriel nodded, once. Cassian snorted. “Bullshit. I never saw you with a single girlfriend.”
Azriel watched his brother, his restless hand. His brow furrowed. Were Cassian and Elain closer than he anticipated? He knew they were friends, but this. This was something else.
“I didn’t see you either, now look at you.” He eyed the shinning gold band on his brother finger. A commitment ring. Ten years and he couldn’t get Mor to even address him as her fucking boyfriend, but one month was apparently enough to date his brother and get a ring stuck in her finger. Her words, not his.
“People will notice.”
“Say it a regular ring. I’ll get you an inconspicuous one.”
“I can’t have a ring constantly stuck in my finger, Az, it will give me tan lines. People will notice.”
“It’s different. I’m chick magnet, didn’t had a girlfriend by choice, fucked plenty of them, tho." His smug was presumptuous. "You, on the other hand, I never saw you with anyone. Why now? Why her?”
Because Elain is capable of shutting my mind down, she rambles so much I can’t hear myself thinking, can’t think about girls I shouldn’t be thinking. Because Elain made a crazy suggestion when I needed a light. Because Elain is the first woman I enjoyed kissing in a long time. Because Elain doesn’t make me hate myself. Because I want to live like a normal man being loved by a normal woman.
Azriel didn’t voiced the answers. None of them were for his brother’s peace of mind. His deal with Elain was private, there was no need to explain the reasons that bound them to Cass.
“You are awfully interested in my girlfriend.”
“Can you blame me? We figured you’d be coming out of the closet any day now. Then puff, you appear with a girlfriend.”
Azriel glared at him.
“I’ve told you, I’m not gay.”
“Well, now I know that. Cousin Rhys will be thrilled to know he won.”
“You and Rhys made a bet on me?" Cassian grinned. "Assholes.”
Hell yeah he bet on him. Azriel had always been a weird kid, full of don’t-touch-me, all worried about wrinkles on his clothes. Plus, the fact that never introduced a single girl to them, never talked about hook up, or dates, or dalliances of any kind was very suspicious. Cassian sat straighter in his chair, an idea occurring to him.
“Wait. Is this one of those fake-dating situations? You and Rhys working together?”
Okay, Azriel had enough. His brother had nothing of important to discuss, and he had a lot of work to do. He collected his things and got up.
“Damn, little Lainy sure is a good actress. I didn’t know she had it in her.”
Azriel flipped his brother on his way out.
.
.
.
“Marino. For two.”
The girl behind the small reception desk checked her system, confirming Azriel’s reservation.
“Follow me, please.”
Elain and Azriel walked behind the petite receptionist as they quietly moved between the tables filled with families, co-workers, friends, couples. Elain looked down to their joined hands. Azriel had taken a hold of hers soon as they were out of the car, Elain stopping dead in her track.
“What are you doing?”
“Building intimacy.”
“Over here.” The girl lead them to a round table by the window.
Tall framed glass from floor to ceiling, gave them a perfect view of the garden where the structure was built around, a magnificent fountain shooting jets in the sky, water lilies floating unbothered. Azriel pulled her chair and Elain sat down, nervous butterflies beat their wings desperately in her stomach, trying to break free. The girl gave them a set of menus, politely explaining that a waitress would take over.
Elain glanced discreetly at the other tables, trying to figure if theirs was the only one without breadsticks or if this place was too fancy to give them free munchables.
“What?” Azriel asked, following her gaze.
“Breadsticks,” she muttered.
She must have given him glutton vibes, because his eyes crinkled with amusement.
“We can order some if you’d like.”
"You a regular?" He shook his head.
"First timer. Didn't seem appropriate to take you to places I know." Did he want to keep her like a dirty little secret? Would you look at that. Elain was opening her mouth when he said, "I don't want us to make memories in soiled land. I rather start fresh, just you and I."
Elain closed her mouth. Oh, that's actually thoughtful. Her ears pinked on the tips, Azriel returning his eyes to the menu, thick black lashes nearly brushing his cheeks. Elain spied his new haircut, the slight fade on the sides making the perfect shape of his ears stand out, the glossy waves on top combed back in a stylish manner.  He looked particularly handsome tonight, reading the menu with the same keen attention he’d give to a report, as if analyzing steak options required a minuntious evaluation of each option presented. Elain got so lost studying him that when the waitress came, she was yet to choose an option.
Azriel made his order with mastery, adding a bottle of wine by the year. Elain was impressed. She generally chose her wine by category; red or white. She fumbled with the menu, grieving at the lack of breadstick or fries. The waitress took pity on her, helping her though the most requested dishes, asking for her preferences in meat, finding her the perfect dish to order.
When she was gone, Azriel said.
“I booked us a hotel.”
Elain gasped exaggeratedly, wrapping her arms around her chest in a fake show of modesty. “How dare you? I’ve told you I’ll marry a virgin!”
The table beside their, containing what appear to be a squad of girlfriends in a night out, threw them suspicious glances, whispering heatedly amongst themselves. Azriel rolled his eyes.
“For the RD Award.” He reminded her. Elain needed no remind, she knew exactly what he meant, and she had no interest in it right now.
“Noooooo.” she let out a long-suffering whine, making him frown.
“Did you want to do that?”
“Don’t talk to me, I’m in mourning.” She used the napkin in her lap to dab the corners of her eyes, fake hiccups to match her fake tear. “I can’t believe I’m dating a man who talks about work on a night out. Lord, why have you forsaken me!”
A couple of snickers could be heard from the next table. Azriel rubbed his neck to mask his embarrassment, because her taunt was reasonable. He’d done it out of habit, used to interact with Elain in work related matters.
Despite is energetic disposition when it came to fashion, Azriel was an introvert who didn’t have much interest in anything else. In the past decade his life could be resumed in two things: Marinos and her. Azriel didn’t like people, didn’t have many friends, didn’t left his house unless he was working, didn’t travel unless he wanted to see her. After having to spend five days a week interacting with his employees, giving orders, creating back-up plans, correcting mistakes and solving endless problems, Azriel was perfectly fine spending his free time napping, eating home-made food, nursing a glass while a documentary rolled on the tv. It's how he recharged his energy. And for the dating department…
Truth be told, Azriel was a little rusty on the dating department. On the rare dates he agreed to go, he didn’t have to speak much, the women pretty content in talking about themselves, batting their lashes at him, intrigued by his silence, which they interpreted as a bad boy persona. They've read him wrong. Azriel wasn’t a bad boy, he didn’t have spare energy to invest in being one. Most times he was simple exhausted, uninterested, heartbroken, trying to distract himself to not think about her, trying to forget the woman who wasn’t a good parameter for quality time either.
Her name still caused him pain.
Mor.
He avoided using it, addressing her by the full name when necessary.
When he was with her, he was her secret, and he had to remain just that, a secret. Back them Azriel did lots of confidential encounters, last minute trips to where she’d be modeling, booking extravagant hotels for the pleasure of her company, appealing to secluded resorts if he wanted to see her outside a room, because their outings consisted in gathering with her friends, fund raisings and galas. Non-committal events that wouldn't put her in a spot she didn't want, because God forbid they were out, let’s say, enjoying a good meal, and someone spotted them.
“Now is not the time. My sponsors don’t like this kind of public attention. You know how prissy they are.”
“I’ve signed a no-dating clause, Az. I’ve told you that.”
“Please, please take me back. I won’t sign the clauses anymore, I’ll demand freedom in my personal life. I’m famous now, they have to listen to me!”
“Stop pressuring me! You are making me look like a villain. Look at everything I’ve done for you! They could sue me for being with you. Is that what you want? For me to be sue? Shunned from the spotlight?!”
“I’m sorry, Az. I’m really sorry. I don’t want it anymore; I don’t want to be a model if I can’t have you. I love you. You are my life.”
Elain rapped her knuckles gently on the table, giving him a worried look.
“What are you thinking about?” she asked gently.
Azriel sipped his water.
“That you are correct.”
Elain doubted. His expression had turned a little wistful, his shoulders sagging slightly. She decided not to comment on it, taking his lead to move the subject forward.
Azriel watched Elain sat higher in her chair, smugness pouring out of her. “That’s usually the case, but I’m glad you are finally admitting.” Her napkin went back to her lap. "Keep that energy when you wake up in the morning."
Azriel chuckled.
In the past, Azriel had judged Elain an airhead. Her eccentric persona and taste for crude jokes was far to similar to his brother’s, who couldn’t read the room to save his life. Cassian though himself the guru of flirting, but his inappropriate conducts had often rendered complains, Azriel having to arrange anti-harassment lectures to please the chief of HR. Azriel thought Cass would outgrow this childish fascination with making people uncomfortable as he grow older. He thought wrong. Turns out age was nothing but fuel to his shameless brother.
That’s why Azriel was instantly peeved with Elain, who strolled in his life with swaggering confidence and a sharp remark for everything, deeming her a female version of the brother who gave him constant headaches. Azriel was wrong again, but this time he was please to be. Now the paid her more attention, Azriel noticed Elain didn’t carry the same arrogant obliviousness as Cass. She was witty, outspoken, brazen even, having no problem in standing up to herself or what she believed, but she only joked around those closer to her, using her humor to make people at ease, to let them know she cared for them.
Sparkling chocolate eyes smiled at him.
Empathy wasn’t something Azriel was used to. It made him lightheaded.
Elain watched Azriel place one hand on top of the table, palm up, wiggling his long sumptuous fingers at her, the bronzed moisturized skin gleaming under the fluorescent lights. “Have I told you how lovely you look today?”
The word “lovely” coming out of his sinuous lips was enough to have her heart doing cartwheels. Her heart was trump. The useless lump of overly excited muscle had no business trying to beat out of her chest when Elain had put an extra effort in her appearance today. Gone were her everyday jeans and t-shirt, replaced by an elegant sage lily dress, the elastic ruched fabric ending with small ruffles around her knees, her pearl colored flats matching the pearl clips keeping her curls behind her ears, small sparkling dot adorning them.
Elain planted her palm in his. “Are you implying I don’t look lovely on the other days?”
“Would you drop dead if you spent a day of your life without contradicting me?” His voice lacked the usually annoyed undertone, his thumb tracing the path of her knuckles.
“Guess you’ll never find out.”
Elain put her free hand down as he had done, asking for his other hand, mimicking the strokes he gave her. Damn, this man’s hands were smooth as a baby bottom!.. is the rest of him this soft? Her thoughts slipped in a dirty tangent.
“I like your shirt.” The material of his dress shirt stretched comfortably over his chest, draping over his powerful arms, to end carefully folded around his elbows, leaving his forearms bare in a way he rarely did. The last time she had seen him sporting such a casual disposition, he stole her breath away. Literally. Elain licked her lips, her voice lower. “Black looks good on you.”
His lips tugged in the corner. “It is my color.”
“It is," she agreed in a daze
A tranquil atmosphere settled over them.
“Can I tell you something?”
“Mmh.”
“I'm glad I kissed you.”
Now she was full on blushing, her cheeks growing incredibly hot, especially when he lifted her hand to his face and kiss her palm. So, Elain did what she do best to mask embarrassment. She cracked a joke.
“My, my. I didn’t know you had it so bad. Tell me mister, how long have you been in love with me?”
“I’m not.” Azriel kissed her other palm, his gaze so intense she squirmed in her chair. Under the artificial light his eyes were all hazel, the fleeks of green hiding, waiting for the sunlight to unravel. “But I intend to be.”

It's time for the 5th annual Magical Trash Year-in-Review, where we take a look at trash cans at the Disney theme parks and resorts worldwide. Yes, it's a weird idea, but you are going to keep reading, right? (View previous Year-in-Reviews) Some may note that it's been a somewhat rocky year for the Mouse, but trash can activity has been strong. As we've seen in previous years, this year's additions were primarily driven by attraction openings, including Mickey & Minnie's Runaway Railway at Disneyland, the opening of the World of Frozen in Hong Kong, and the arrival of the Zootopia in Shanghai. Unfortunately, we also saw the fastest introduction-to-removal can timeline with the closing of Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser - which had opened just a year earlier at Walt Disney World. Over the past year, MagicalTrash.com celebrated the 1,000 trash can photo milestone (only took 14 years!), while adding over 100 new entries. This was complimented by 1,600+ posts across social media networks, including Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Mastodon, Threads, and Bluesky. Posts were also added to Twitter/X, but frankly it's hard to continue supporting that platform due to its overall decline on many fronts (and I say that as someone who works in corporate social media professionally!). For 2023, Magical Trash tracked 16 substantial trash can design changes, a 14% increase vs. 2022's 14 tracked changes:
Added: 14
Historical Cans Added: 4
Updated: 0
Endangered: 0
Removed: 2
The US-based parks saw the most activity, with Disneyland Resort experiencing 6 changes, while Walt Disney World recorded 4 changes. Hong Kong Disneyland Resort and Disneyland Paris Resort both recorded 2 updates, and Shanghai Disney Resort saw 1 new addition. No notable changes were recorded for Tokyo Disney Resort or Disney Cruise Line.
Here's a detailed breakdown of updates:
ADDED New trash can designs that debuted in Disney theme parks over the past year
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (El CapiTOON Theater) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown With a movie theater setting, iconography is anchored by a popcorn bucket image with large “EC” letters.
Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway (M.A.G.I.C.) - NEW Disneyland, Mickey’s Toontown Outside the attraction are cans associated with M.A.G.I.C. - short for the Municipal Agency of Garbage Identification and Collection. Now that's a group we want to join!
World of Frozen (Arendelle Crest) - NEW - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen The official crest of Arendelle features a crocus - a multi-color flowering bulb that typically blooms in the spring - and seen throughout the Frozen franchise.
World of Frozen (Wandering Oaken’s Sliding Sleighs) - NEW Hong Kong Disneyland, World of Frozen Furthering the rugged forest theme of the family coaster, decorative Scandinavian folk art patterns are found throughout queue, with geometric shapes highlighted in red, green, and orange hues.
Zootopia - NEW Shanghai Disneyland, Zootopia A surprising entry to Shanghai's bland trash can scene, green trash cans with zebra-like stripes on the lower portion combine with a city emblem.
San Fransokyo Square - NEW Disney California Adventure, San Fransokyo Square The shoehorned Big Hero 6 retheme of DCA's Pacific Wharf gave us new cans that looked a lot like the old cans - but with bonus "SFS" branding. Ho hum.
Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana - NEW Walt Disney World, Epcot, World Nature You can tell this is a modern Disney attraction because the name is an IP-laden paragraph. Lots of storytelling to explain "scenery."
Parkside Market - NEW Disneyland Resort, Downtown Disney Probably one of the more visually-stunning additions in 2023, Mickey Mouse + mid-century design. Simple concept, well-executed.
The Villas at Disneyland Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, The Villas at Disneyland Hotel New DVC borrows much of its design from Aulani. Not ugly, but also not magical. Were these picked out of a catalog?
Pixar Place Hotel - NEW Disneyland Resort, Pixar Place Hotel The retime of Disneyland's Paradise Pier Hotel features trash cans very similar in design to those implemented at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel. Maybe they got a 2-for-1 deal?
Disneyland Paris Reusable Tableware Cans - NEW Disneyland Paris, Adventureland France's Anti-Waste and Circular Economy Law is focused on phasing out improper disposal of waste. Food service at the French parks has implemented reusable table settings, which has impacted trash can design.
"Fantasyland 2" Backstage - NEW Disneyland Paris, Fantasyland A backstage can makes an appearance onstage as a support trash can from the “Fantasyland 2” zone, parked where everyone can see.
Pym Test Kitchen Food Waste - NEW Disney California Adventure, Avengers Campus After debuting combination food waste trash cans in Tomorrowland around 2021, Disneyland expanded the practice to the Avengers Campus at DCA.
Jollywood Nights Temporary Media Can - NEW Disney's Hollywood Studios, Grand Avenue Throw a sticker on an existing trash can and it's something new! Temporarily rethemed can at Disney's Hollywood Studios during a media event for Jollywood Nights holiday entertainment.
HISTORICAL CANS ADDED Retro trash can designs that were unearthed by new research this year, but are no longer in use
MK Main Street (1974) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Magic Kingdom, Main Street U.S.A. Early years of the Magic Kingdom featured very detailed trash cans on Main Street U.S.A, often in multiple colors. Quite a contrast from the undecorated brown cans used in the 2000s.
Farmer's Market (Late-1980s/Early-1990s) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Epcot, Future World, The Land The famed umbrella tables at The Land found their shapes emulated via the trash cans, which were primarily brown with light tan arches represented on all sides.
River Country (2010) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Walt Disney World, Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground 9 years after the water park closed, remnants of the ‘Ol’ Swimmin’ Hole’ could still be spotted at Fort Wilderness.
Mulholland Madness (2007) - HISTORICAL ADDITION Disney's California Adventure, Paradise Pier Tacky theme was on-point for DCA 1.0. This green can with road sign decal found a home in Paradise Pier.
UPDATED Existing trash can designs that have been modified or revised in the past year
None for 2023
ENDANGERED Trash can designs that still exist, but will most likely disappear in the future
None for 2023
REMOVED Trash can designs that have been eliminated from use at Disney theme parks
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Interior) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser The in-wall trash cans for the 100-cabin Corellian MPO-1400 model Galactic Starcruiser were in use for just 579 days.
Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser (Terminal) - REMOVED Walt Disney World, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser You won't be needing to dispose of your garbage before boarding the MPO-1400 Star Cruiser Halcyon, as these cans will probably have a longer life than the hotel ever had.
One massive disappointment in 2023 was Walt Disney World's opening of TRON Lightcycle / Run in the Magic Kingdom's Tomorrowland. Generic silver cans, thus reinforcing WDW's continual cheapening out on themed trash can design. Paul Pressler called and even he thinks you can do better.
Here at Magical Trash we celebrated our 14-year anniversary covering the world of Disney trash cans, which included keeping up with various salt shaker merchandise releases that showcase the iconic can shape. 6 new designs were released during festivals: The Dude with the Food (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Amazingly Sweet (DCA Food & Wine 2023), Groovy Garden Orange Bird (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Stuck on Imagination Figment (Epcot Flower & Garden 2023), Chef Mickey (Epcot Food & Wine 2023), and Spaceship Earth (Epcot Food & Wine 2023).
If you happened to be at Tokyo Disneyland, you could have picked up a mini figure version of a Tomorrowland trash can or a TDS trash can toy. In the U.S. you could pick up a shirt or water bottle with a recycling can image proclaiming that you "Love Our Disney Parks" -- Disneyland or WDW-specific versions. There was plenty of trash can auction action as well.
Thanks to everyone who contributed photos, visited MagicalTrash.com, and interacted with this weird hobby over the past year. You've put a smile on my face as we all follow this goofy passion. As it's impossible to be omnipresent at 12 theme parks and numerous resorts around the world, let us know what we've missed! Thanks for an interesting year, CanFans! - Steve Tanner, your Magical Trash host

Derrick's 2022 Gameological Awards
Every year on the Gameological Discord, rather than a simple top ten list, we ask what games did what things especially well. Here are my picks in this year's pool...
Game of the Year
Tumblr media
Game of the Year means different things to different people. Simply being “the best” is subjective. For me, it’s a matter of which game stuck with me the longest, a game that I couldn’t stop thinking about, a game that captured my imagination and would not let go until I was through. In 2022, no game did that quite like Tunic. A gorgeous isometric action-rpg heavily inspired by classic The Legend of Zelda games, Tunic fashions itself as a long-lost retro game. One where the instruction manual has had its pages separated and lost within the world itself, leading players to explore the world with little guidance and literally piece things together as they go. Mysteries on top of mysteries, stretching through the corners of my mind, obsessing for days on end. Tunic is a whole damn journey and no game in 2022 swept me away into its mythology, world-building, and sheer scope quite the way Tunic did.
Single-player GOTY
Tumblr media
As we continue to blur the lines between the various forms of media, the main detail that separates games from comparable experiences in film and books is that games are about the agency of the player, that the person consuming the media is actively a part of it. It’s easy to escape into lives unlike your own by watching them on the silver screen or reading about them on the page, but games make you FEEL the way a different person might feel. Put aside the dreamy aesthetic, raunchy dialogue, and supernatural conspiracy story… the real star of Neon White was that it made the player feel like a goddamn golden God, launching themselves into the heavens and crashing down on the heads of their foes with righteous justice and unwavering focus. The absolute speed and force of Neon White’s gameplay made every player experience the rush of being a pro gamer, squeezing every last drop of blood out of a game’s throat as you dominated it. Yes, it’s gorgeous and sounds great and all that good stuff, but the adrenaline provided by Neon White was unlike anything else this year.
Multiplayer GOTY
Tumblr media
The Splatoon games have lovely and imaginative single-player campaigns, but let’s be real, the franchise is all about frantic multiplayer paint action. Splatoon 3 is the least innovative game in the series so far, but that doesn’t make it any less joyous an experience to hop online with some friends or make some new ones while painting the town [insert your randomly assigned team color here]. New personalization features like SplatTags and lockers, along with games-as-service inspired seasonal catalogs and an always-on upgrade to Splatoon 2’s Salmon Run, Splatoon 3 is constantly hitting players with reasons to keep coming back for more.
Favorite Replay
Tumblr media
The Stanley Parable remains an iconic experience from the previous decade’s golden era of indie games. It introduced countless impressionable gamers worldwide to the concept of metatextual narratives within gameplay and the relationship between the player’s choice and the creator’s voice. It was all set to remain a once-in-a-lifetime exploration of interactive media, right up until this year’s release of The Stanley Parable Ultra Deluxe, a game that was, on the surface, a modern remaster of a decade-old PC game for modern hardware and consoles, but was secretly a stealth sequel with even more to say about the current gaming landscape. While the original Stanley Parable was happy to direct a mirror at gamers to make them question the choices they make when they consume media of any kind, the additional new areas of Ultra Deluxe raise new questions and concerns about the game industry and the ways that video games are designed, consumed, critiqued, discussed, and ultimately tossed aside. The revelatory experience revealed more than ever before, and remained effortlessly hilarious all along the way.
Didn't Click Award
Tumblr media
Going into 2022, there was no game I was more hyped for than OlliOlli World. The first two entries into the side-scrolling skateboard trick-em-up were damn near perfect. Perfectly at home on the Playstation Vita, they were tight, thrilling, and oh-so-stylish. A long-awaited sequel was just so exciting, and the new Adventure Time-inspired aesthetic had a ton of potential, along with the ability to finally design your own skater and express yourself through fashion and gear. The only problem was… the gameplay never quite CLICKED. What was so magical about the previous games was how responsive the controls were. Just like Super Meat Boy assured people that, if they died, it was their own mistake and not the game’s controls, OlliOlli 1 and 2 both had immaculate precision with the skateboard controls. OlliOlli World did not. Controls are floaty and imprecise, sometimes it felt like the game just decided you didn’t jump in time or didn’t grab correctly. Without that precision, OlliOlli World just never felt right, and no matter how many times I tried, I just never connected with it the way I had with its predecessors.
Most Forgettable Award

Netflix made its first proper foray into game publishing this year, along with its first showing at the not-E3 “Summer Games Fest,” where they announced plenty of successful licensed games coming to mobile devices via Netflix, several Netflix streaming projects based on popular video games, and most notably surprise-dropped a new Netflix-exclusive game from the creator of Downwell. “Poinpy” instantly trended on social media as gamers laughed about the humorously named vertical platformer, and as one would expect from the creator of Downwell, the game showed a surprising amount of depth and strategy. That said, I only played the game maybe three or four times that first week and then it lay idle on my home screen for months before I finally just deleted it. Poinpy was certainly a thing… but only for a hot minute.
(In)famous Award

Social media could not get enough videos of the viral sensation Trombone Champ, a rhythm game played by sliding up and down the screen like pushing and pulling the slide of a trombone. People loved adding silly songs or viral audio clips and making Trombone Champ levels out of them. I have no idea if the game is fun because frankly I have no interest in playing it. The videos were funny for a while, but really, they just felt like yet another meme, just one that happened to be centered around this silly game.
Unexpected Joy

With an uninspired name like Vampire Survivors, a nondescript retro pixel art style, and the increasingly tired “rogue-like” label, I had absolutely no interest in what seemed like yet another flash-in-the-pan indie sensation. And then they went and dropped a free mobile port during The Game Awards and I was like “eh, what harm could it do?” And then I drained my phone’s battery twice a day for a week, completely addicted to its game loop. As much as the game lazily lifts from rogue-likes and bullet-hell shmups, it brilliantly and expertly lifts from idle games and clickers. The end result is a remarkably passive game that steadily makes you feel more and more like an unstoppable machine of divine power. It’s incredible and has no right being this good.
Best Music

Melatonin only just came out a few days ago, so I haven’t had enough time with it to really consider it for titles like GOTY, but I can already say that this Rhythm Heaven-inspired minigame collection absolutely nails its inspiration when it comes to hooky melodies with toe-tapping beats. More than anything else, a rhythm game has got to have compelling music to keep you playing, and there is no doubt that Melatonin has that in spades.
Favorite Game Encounter

There were several fascinating encounters in my GOTY pick, Tunic, from enormous mechanized sentinels to flittering joyous fairies, but nothing this year came close to The Mountain Door. If you’ve played Tunic, you know. Opening The Mountain Door is a puzzle that literally spans the entire breadth of the gaming experience in ways that I still get excited about just remembering months after the fact. It requires using all of the knowledge you’ve collected along the way to explore, examine, and rethink dozens of smaller puzzles that culminate in one euphoric victory. And it’s still not even the end of the game!
Best DLC of the Year

Little Inferno was the unlikeliest smash hit of the Wii U launch library, and proved to be an absolute delight when it came to PC and mobile devices. Equal parts idle game, passive toy, and black comedy narrative adventure, the game remains a truly special oddball indie romp. Ten years after its initial release, in Fall 2022, players were surprised with its first DLC—Little Inferno Ho Ho Holiday—taking the game’s already explicit anti-consumerism bent and applying it specifically to that most commercial time of the year: festive winter holidays. What an unexpected joy!

Disco Elysium. I know. I KNOW. It’s been sitting in my library for years now. I’ll get there someday.
Game that Made Me Think

I continue to find Sam Barlow fascinating as a game creator. He and David Cage are the two directors most experimenting with the rapidly blurring line between cinema and game, and his latest title, Immortality, blurs that line even further by actually just being about movies. The game is, essentially, three feature-length films, broken up into reels and rehearsals and behind the scenes footage for players to scrub through and explore, and even more than his previous efforts Her Story and Telling Lies, Immortality really bonks players over the head with "THAT WAS IMPORTANT" by disrupting the footage in jarring ways that I don’t want to discuss in case people want to enjoy the game unspoiled. It’s not my favorite of his titles, and I had a harder time investing in the characters than his other works, but from an interactive standpoint, Immortality pushes boundaries in fascinating ways that I couldn’t stop thinking about, even when I no longer really cared about the game’s mysteries.

The last major feature update Harmonix’s Fuser got in 2021 added a “Diamond Stage” where users could buy spots on the bill and mix tracks live to a global streaming audience. As the game steadily died through 2022—first with an end to new DLC tracks, then the decline of weekly challenges, and finally online services being shuttered just this week—but even when the game didn’t compel me to come back and play more, the Diamond Stage kept me hooked on the official Fuser Twitch stream, enjoying endless mixes by players spinning live at all times. The stage is finally closed now, leaving legacy players to their own devices to play locally and share mixes as one-offs rather than real-time collaborations, but for half of the game’s short life-span, we had a lovely dance party available to us 24/7 we could all share together.
WILDCARD

Kirby and the Forgotten Land is just too good a game to not mention at all. It’s the best Kirby game since Super Star, which is very possibly one of the greatest video games of all time. It’s also, somehow, the first mainline Kirby platform adventure on a three-dimensional axis, something that other Nintendo icons Mario and Zelda did back on the N64 and Metroid did on the GameCube, all while Kirby kept happily within the confines of flat two-dimensional platforming (aside from some spin-offs like Air Ride, Blowout Blast, and Dream Course). Not content to simply mimic foes by stealing their powers, this time Kirby would take on the characteristics of inanimate objects in the world, becoming a car, a vending machine, a staircase, and more. The game ends with a spectacular over-the-top battle that feels like it belongs in Bayonetta, not the unassuming pink puffball that is Kirby, but it all works! Hell, this game gives Kirby a gun, AND IT WORKS!!! On paper, nothing about this game makes sense, but in practice, it freakin’ rules. If this is what 3D Kirby games are going to be like, I can’t wait to see what’s next.

Largest-ever map of universe’s active supermassive black holes released
Astronomers have charted the largest-ever volume of the universe with a new map of active supermassive black holes living at the centers of galaxies. Called quasars, the gas-gobbling black holes are, ironically, some of the universe’s brightest objects.
The new map logs the location of about 1.3 million quasars in space and time, the furthest of which shone bright when the universe was only 1.5 billion years old. (For comparison, the universe is now 13.7 billion years old.)
“This quasar catalog is different from all previous catalogs in that it gives us a three-dimensional map of the largest-ever volume of the universe,” says map co-creator David Hogg, a senior research scientist at the Flatiron Institute’s Center for Computational Astrophysics in New York City and a professor of physics and data science at New York University. “It isn’t the catalog with the most quasars, and it isn’t the catalog with the best-quality measurements of quasars, but it is the catalog with the largest total volume of the universe mapped.”
Hogg and his colleagues present the map in a paper published March 18 in The Astrophysical Journal. The paper’s lead author, Kate Storey-Fisher, is a postdoctoral researcher at the Donostia International Physics Center in Spain.
The scientists built the new map using data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia space telescope. While Gaia’s main objective is to map the stars in our galaxy, it also inadvertently spots objects outside the Milky Way, such as quasars and other galaxies, as it scans the sky.
“We were able to make measurements of how matter clusters together in the early universe that are as precise as some of those from major international survey projects — which is quite remarkable given that we got our data as a ‘bonus’ from the Milky Way–focused Gaia project,” Storey-Fisher says.
Quasars are powered by supermassive black holes at the centers of galaxies and can be hundreds of times as bright as an entire galaxy. As the black hole’s gravitational pull spins up nearby gas, the process generates an extremely bright disk and sometimes jets of light that telescopes can observe.
The galaxies that quasars inhabit are surrounded by massive halos of invisible material called dark matter. By studying quasars, astronomers can learn more about dark matter, such as how much it clumps together.
Astronomers can also use the locations of distant quasars and their host galaxies to better understand how the cosmos expanded over time. For example, scientists have already compared the new quasar map with the oldest light in our cosmos, the cosmic microwave background. As this light travels to us, it is bent by the intervening web of dark matter — the same web mapped out by the quasars. By comparing the two, scientists can measure how strongly matter clumps together.
“It has been very exciting to see this catalog spurring so much new science,” Storey-Fisher says. “Researchers around the world are using the quasar map to measure everything from the initial density fluctuations that seeded the cosmic web to the distribution of cosmic voids to the motion of our solar system through the universe.”
The team used data from Gaia’s third data release, which contained 6.6 million quasar candidates, and data from NASA’s Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer and the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. By combining the datasets, the team removed contaminants such as stars and galaxies from Gaia’s original dataset and more precisely pinpointed the distances to the quasars. The team also created a map showing where dust, stars and other nuisances are expected to block our view of certain quasars, which is critical for interpreting the quasar map.
“This quasar catalog is a great example of how productive astronomical projects are,” says Hogg. “Gaia was designed to measure stars in our own galaxy, but it also found millions of quasars at the same time, which give us a map of the entire universe.”
