A show that didn't know whether it was coming or going. Paul Kemsley - "PK" on the show - wants to "revolutionize London's super-prime property market". By this, he means "turn it into a clone of Los Angeles. But without the sun. Or the big stars."
PK's idea could have made an interesting observational documentary. (Could. Not would.)
Instead, he chose to bolt on a recruitment show, find the best candidate(s) from eight would-be yuppies.
What happens when two half-conceived shows take the strain of being on air? Nobody watches.
Hi I’m a longtime listener and I just want to say that in the latest ep in regards to channel4 it’s a really complex channel in the uk that is (arguably) the most left-leaning tv network in the uk and has a specific cross-funding model which involves raising commercial revenues from the market and reinvesting surpluses back into British public service content from UK independent producers. This is different from the BBC who must rely on governmental funding and even has the BBC chair appointed by the government making it prone to misinformation and corruption. It got to the point in 2022 channel 4 was the only tv network that actively challenging the conservative government for their corruption and the conservative government threatened to take away its funding and privatise it.
Although I don’t agree with the 1D documentary nor with some other issues (C4 has had a history of poverty porn programmes) I think channel4 is a lot more complex than what that thesis you read out in the ep was alluding to. I just wanted to say this bc in terms of c4 the positives definitely outweigh the negative and its not the fox news of the uk (that would be talktv and gbnews) and listeners shouldn’t be put off to watch programmes that come out the channel in the future :)
Hi there!
Thank you so much for this explanation and for providing some insight into things we don't have any first-hand knowledge of or experience with. I (Emily) appreciate you taking the time to let us know the nuance!
i kind of hate when people respond to various stereotypical depictions of travellers from britain/ireland e.g my big fat g*psy wedding type by suggesting that like they're 'fake' travellers or something. you've probably seen the posts where it's like 'real traveller culture isn't this it's this' like... irish travellers are also a 'real' ethnic minority with their own traditions and history and culture like. they may often be stereotyped and also may have ways of living that seem unpalatable to you but they're both deeply marginalised and also umm....undisputably 'real' it's just such a weird response to stereotyping and bigotry
mash watching discourse is ignoring the 'passively watch random reruns on television as you grow up + that one time your dad brings home a dvd that has like. 5 episodes from season 6 from the library' method
hello this weeks "I want to show u David Bowie" is Cracked Actor from Aladdin Sane, which is probably my favourite song from that album. Mainly I like this one for the staging in two live shows: above in 1974 and below in 1983, where they act as bookends , i guess- or at least its a nice little self reference
