Child's pair of tiger-shaped shoes China, 1851-1950, silk & cotton On display at the George Washington University Textile Museum's new animal-themed textiles exhibition!
“Widely regarded as the king of the animal world in traditional China, tigers are among the most widely evoked creatures in Chinese iconography. Numerous folk stories tell of tigers defending good and devouring evil, and images of fierce, protective tigers adorn homes, temples, and tombs. Given their positive associations, tigers are particularly popular for the patterning of children's clothing and accessories. Tiger-shaped shoes like this pair were traditionally believed to ward off malevolent forces and instill children with the strength and vitality characteristic of tigers.”

cracks me the fuck up that Vox is supposed to be SO white-man-coded but I've seen multiple Asian fans independently point at em and go "that fucker one of us" 😭😭 What is going ON
Is it the stripes. Is it the allergy to therapy. Is it the misread on what is "Successful Famous Rich Guy" fashion and insisting it IS it IS even though he's dead wrong. Is it the wounded pride. Is it the chasing this image others present you of a successful person and changing yourself over and over to fit that mold as times keep changing and changing. But you never quite compare?
Is it the way he spectates the battle. You couldn't change out of your clothes? You just took off some layers like you're going straight back to work after this but you still wanna be "not formal at home"???
Vivziepop said I'm making this guy SUCH a specific white televangelist with religious background and fans said Naw, right idea, wrong direction. This is Asian Christian. He's causing problems a whole other way.
He lied through his fucking teeth every time his family called em. He made it big, he's making it big in 1940s America. He's so famous now. So many followers fans. Yea he has his own show. He's too busy to date right now but don't worry, he's got plenty of choices here from all his success. He's smoking 5 packs a day, he keeps losing at the mahjong den he goes to every weekend. The people robbing him at that table are the closest thing he'll have to friends.

The rich tradition of Chinese embroidery
This is an appealing publication, presented in actrattive format. It contains much helpful and enlightening information and the positive aspects of the book are reinforced by the touching enthusiasm of the author, an assistant professor in the Costume Research Section of the Institute of History, part of the Academy of Social Sciences of China.  With the possible exception of porcelain, the applied arts of China from the late Imperial period to the present day are poorly researched by both Western and Chinese scholars. This book, emanating from a learned Chinese institution, is certainly timely, especially as the small domestic embroideries under discussion are found in many museum collections and private homes throughout the British Isles and North America. A historical introduction forms the first section of the book. It attemps to place the embroideries shown in colour plates in the second section in a comprehensible context.

Cat Shoes China, 20th c. Crepe, 4 3/4 in. (12.065 cm) Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art 42-33/2 A,B
“These children’s shoes are adorable, but they also carry a secret message to a married couple. In Chinese, the phrase for children’s shoes sounds like the word harmony, which extend to a four-word phrase, tong xie dao lao 同偕到老, which means, May you grow old together in harmony.”

I just wanted to say tysm for posting/tling these videos about ethnic minorities!! It's so hard to find sources about a lot of them and since we're a pretty small percentage even in China it's really rare to meet other 少数民族 diasporas abroad (esp from the same group) and it's just so heartwarming to see other Chinese ethnic minorities showing their culture or clothing and just living <33
I am glad people enjoy it & I am constantly learning myself, too!
I don’t know if I’ve ever met any 少数民族diaspora irl, now that I think of it, but then again, it’s not exactly visibly apparent most of the time! (And I suppose we usually just ask which province one’s family is from, if anything)
That’s one of the reasons I like the douyin transformation trends, because they start out with everyone in daily wear (that’s fairly standard globally) before revealing the diversity in and range of ethnic group attire :)
