Ever an irresponsible attraction for some, the Unmapped Areas and their mysteries remain. Ulat and an assistant ventured out in to the desert as far as the Unmapped Areas and farther in an effort to bring back compelling visual documentation. Electronic means have so far failed and thus Ulat determined that chemical-based photographic processes would be up to the task. Sadly all film came back fogged or bearing strange streaks or spots. I don’t need to know much about the ebb and flow of robot activity. They can certainly make for varied and interesting conversationalists but I hesitate to dig deeper in an attempt to learn more about their inner lives. In a way they are very much like the cats they keep company with: somewhat inscrutable and revealing only what is necessary in the moment. Still waters may run very deep indeed. (Upon my first use of this metaphor in a conversation I had to go to great lengths to explain that puddles may be still indeed but they weren’t always deep. I parked myself in a covered entryway shortly before sunset to await the lighting of the street lamps. I began a loose sketch of the environment and within minutes was beset by onlookers asking (ever so politely!) to see what I was working on. After making virtually no progress over half an hour I just closed my sketchbook and settled for watching the passerby. A short while later a robot stepped out of the door behind me and paused at the sidewalk, observing the foot traffic. After a few minutes they turned and gestured at my sketchbook. “You are a practitioner of aesthetic drift? The gallery is closed for the day but please come back tomorrow to visit our display of transcription variances.” A new discovery!
