I appreciate Hori trying over and over to emphasize that Endeavor doesn't want or deserve forgiveness but I also hate how Rei says that everyone in the family is at fault for the dysfunction and trauma. Like...no, your children were literal children and you were repeatedly abused and sexually assaulted by Endeavor to the point that you had a psychotic break. There's one person at fault and it's the man with a flame beard and giant tits.

With the tentative and rough translations out, i have to say, yeah, Hori really doesn't get what he's actually writing and if he was trying to make Toga's entire deal a metaphor for queerness, he's ended up being quite offensive.
Like first off it seems he has Toga say she falls in love easily with boy and girls and...animals. Which, I always felt the bird thing as a kid could have negative connotations, but wrote it off as 'she was a little kid and this was before her desire for blood was wrapped up in her romantic feelings' type things. So having Hori reinstate that yes, she does still love animals to the point of blood drinking desire--a desire Hori coded as sexual/romantic is not a good look.
It also just makes me question if she could ever own a pet or if she'd end up killing it because she loved it to much and she needed to drink it's blood.
Also getting her perspective on the boy she attacked isn't great either. The translation is rough and basic so it could change, but I don't think there's any translation that could make the situation not read poorly.
In the rough translations she says something along the lines of "I didn't ask to drink his blood because I was afraid he'd hate me and think I was a decent monster."
I could see an alternative translation being "I asked for his blood and he called me a deviant monster, and I sucked his blood."
Again if Hori is trying to make a queer metaphor with Toga, this is a huge issue. Her attacking the boy was always a big problem, but if he didn't bring it up again I think a lot of casual readers would have forgotten it. But now it's front and center again and brings back bad connotations for Toga and a queer reading of her character.
Because again if we read her blood drinking as queerness, and Hori has already coded it in the past as lust while just last chapter confirming that Toga sees it as kissing in the very least we get two equally bad reads.
A) Due to fear of rejection Toga did not ask for consent and decided she'd just make sexual advances toward someone she had a crush regardless.
or B) She got rejected and told no, and then made the sexual advance anyway.
With a queer reading this only becomes worse because it pays into the really negative and even dangerous idea that same sex attracted people will go after anyone regardless of consent or the other persons orientation. It continues to perpetuate the idea that queer people are sexual predators, who target straight people or in the very least do not care about consent, or are unable to control themselves long enough to get it.
But even without a queer reading what Toga did is wrong. It sucks that people don't get her way of showing love, but consent is still needed regardless. You can't just do what you want to someone because you were to afraid to ask them out. You can't just do what you want with someone after they tell you no. Even if the boy had called her a monster that would not make it ok for Toga to, essentially sexually assault him (yes, kissing someone against their will is sexual assault, which is what Toga sees her blood drinking as).
And I think that's why Toga's character is really hard to get behind for some people--because at the end of the day she's literally just saying "I can't help but sexually assault people (and animals apparently)', and the solution to this is to give her exactly what she wants and apologize for not seeing how much pain she was in when she was actively trying to sexually assault people.

I'm rewatching some episodes and you know what, I always wondered why in chapter 191/episode 90, Dabi didn't attack Miruko when she arrived on scene. Not that I wanted him to. Instead, he bounced out of there.
I thought about it.
Him being him, he could have just shot fire at her and even taunt her, and then continued on with Endeavor and Hawks while they were down. He comes off as the type to not really give a damn about "right times" and what not. And his quirk can be advantage against someone like Miruko because again, it's fire. He could use it to keep her away.
But then I further thought about it.
One, he does recognize her. He didn't even remember Snatch, but recognized her.
Meaning, he knew what she was about and probably got flashbacks to when Gran Torino knocked him out. Something Gran Torino and Miruko have in common?
They're fast and melee fighter.
Dabi isn't. I guess he figured that he would have most definitely get his ass beat the moment Miruko got close to him.
Even if he shot fire at her, he would probably miss because she's fast. And even if he did get her, this is Miruko. It will not stop her!
The end result would still be possibly him getting knocked out and arrested.
THIS IS HER ENTRANCE INTO THE FIGHT!! THIS IS WHAT SHE DOES!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dabi is cool and all, but he doesn't have them hands. He's not stupid, he's knows that. He can read people, but Miruko? When he recognizes Miruko, he knew she was about it. That's someone he cannot toy with.
He was not going to further waste time there. He knows when to choose to retreat and what to fight.
That time? Oh, time to go!
And even if he did try to taunt her, try to get under her skin it would have been fruitless.
This Miruko, we're talking about. You think she'll let Dabi say something out the way to her? Exactly, what could Dabi say to her?
I would say it would have been a back and forth banter between them, but Miruko just doesn't seem like the type to waste time and most likely, she probably would have said something that would tick him off.

Yes I am wondering if Nagant is on the HC rooftop, yes I am lowkey thinking about my au yadda yadda
But I think it’s funny, if that’s not the case, that this woman just. she was resting one moment and then she just kinda got up and ran to the nearest roof to aim for Tomura. Like she’s still in - what looks to be - her hospital gown, she hasn’t even changed. Did this girl just run from a hospital bed or what

The more raw translations say the Himura's have been around for a long time, what are the odds of AFO and Yoichi being related to them?
I know I specialize in family trees and not statistics, but think about what else was learned of the Himuras that maybe I don't want AfO and Yoichi specifically to be related to them in this instance

*banging pots* repeat after me: sai are blunt weapons and nothing like knives
(ilu but I’ve read multiple bnha au fics where Izuku uses sai and they’re described as sharp/for stabbing/like knives which is Incorrect)

Christ it just hit me how terrible Millie would be feeling while Spinner's all roided out on the Nomu Juice during this part of the arc. She just wants her boo to be happy 🥺
One of her Quirk's drawbacks is that for the most part it's almost impossible for her to take things seriously since...well, she's a cartoon. So things like discrimination and oppression are hard for her to really convey her feelings about without sounding immature and childish. I think the only time she'd ever be able to do that effectively is if she had just gone through a Rating Change and was able to express herself more maturely, and that only happens during times of extreme stress and trauma. Like seeing your boyfriend barely like himself as he leads an army of his brethren to a hospital while taking on any Heroes in his way

The main reason I hate Toga's character more than the other LoV is mainly because Hori tried to late and to shallowly to make her sympathetic. It's gotten to the point that the things that we are told make her sympathetic are vague at best and how she reacts is to brainless to make sense.
The main thing I see people say about Toga and her character is that she just wants to be accepted for who she is. She's freaking out now because she didn't want to destroy the world she just wanted an easier life. Yet if she wants to live she has to pick a side and only the villains would accept her.
The problem is that we never actually see Toga rejected due to her Quirk except by her parents, who seem less upset by her Quirk and more for her exceptionally high drive to obtain blood. They don't say her Quirk is gross, instead they tell her to stop killing birds and smiling about about it. It's less about her having a blood Quirk and more about her actions.
The same can be said for everyone else. Hori doesn't tell us one way of another if the kids at school knew about Toga's Quirk or not, but given Quirks are registered, kids like to brag, and being Quirkless is just as ostracizing it seems likely they did. But even if they didn't, they didn't turn on Toga because of her Quirk, they were instead rightfully freaked out that she attacked another kid out of nowhere, jammed a straw in his neck and blushed like she was getting off to it before fleeing.
Ochako, Izuku, and Tsyu don't comment on her Quirk being gross. The Heroes don't either (to my memory). Instead they react to Toga's actions, the things she herself does of her own volition. Ochako doesn't reject Toga because she's just to brainwashed to understand Toga might be sad but instead because Toga lures her away from saving civilians that are in-part in danger and dying because of Toga's choices, by killing a old woman. Than instead of telling Ochako about Jin's death or even acting any different than she always does, she tackles her with a knife, trying to kill her with a smile.
Ochako never says she hates Toga because of her Quirk, or that she was always going to be a villains because of it. Instead Ochako just tells her that if the way Toga wants to live is to threaten people than she has to be willing to accept the consequences of those actions.
The thing is, if Toga's goal was always to live an easier life, what does that even mean? Considering how badly she takes reasonable rejection, it really feels like her ideal world would be one where she could suck the blood of anyone she saw as cute and they'd have no right to tell her no.
When Shigaraki said he wouldn't destroy what was precious to her did she think that he'd gift her Izuku and Ochako to keep as forced blood bags for her to use whenever she wanted? Or did she just think that if Shigaraki beat the Heroes her crushes would fall at her feet and beg her to suck their blood?
Why is Toga freaking out now? Because she doesn't like AfO? Did she not understand when Shigaraki leveled the first city, that he meant what he said about destroying everything? Did she truly not think the Heroes would fight against them, meaning they'd all have to die for them to get an 'easy' life?
Again, she was never rejected for zero reason. She legitimately hunted people like they were animals and because of Hori coding her desire for blood as sexual she comes across as kind of an incel, who thinks people should just be forced to give her what she wants. Her freaking out now feels less "she didn't really want to hurt anyone" and more "she definitely wants to hurt people, but not this many people" or even "local girl to stupid to realize that 'kill all humans party' actually wanted to kill all humans".

thinking of midnight’s costume and how strange it is that she would wear a full coverage suit knowing she’d have to rip it for her quirk to work but what if it actually worked as a compression garment? having a uniform pressure over her skin could help her concentrate enough to keep somnambulist beneath her skin instead of leaking out all over her body when she activates it

I feel like Curious would have been an absolute threat on the battlefield, she would have caused a lot more chaos for the Heroes if she was still around. The woman's quirk was MAKING THINGS AND PEOPLE GO BOOM.
