kataang and azulaang are sister ships in the sense that the avatar needs to be with a fiery beautiful Bending Master to tease him incessantly and keep him humble. which in turn gives him enough ammo to torture his best friend, who just so happens to be said bender's older brother, by nonchalantly recounting tales of their romance on the daily

Are you dumb? Zutara is not the fandom's preferred choice. Zutara shippers (TO THIS DAY) get harassed on a daily. They were even openly mocked by the creators. Yeah, when it comes to people who ACTIVELY SHIP in the ATLA fandom, Zutata might be preferred. But to people who don't make fan content or engage with shipping, Kataang is the preferred ship.
You Kataang shippers are so butthurt that you have to make things up, it's sad
Tumblr media
you’ll never convince me that zutara isn’t the preferred ship throughout both the active shipping and the general fandoms. for instance, i tagged this with the APPROPRIATE “antizutara” tag so that it doesn’t actually end up in the zutara tag. how do i know that this is the appropriate tag? a quick glance into “antizutara” shows that all the posts are anti zutara posts. which means that you’ve somehow stumbled upon this post by stalking my blog (not your first time, i’m sure). i will continue to use the antizutara tag in fairness for those who don’t want to see anti posts (something that your fandom doesn’t extend to any other ship that gets in the way of zutara). your attempts to direct my anti posts into the general main zutara tag is clear and transparent and quite funny, actually.
if my hunches are correct, i know EXACTLY who sent this ask. stick to one narrative across all your accounts. either kataang is extremely unpopular and no one likes it or it’s always been the fandom’s preferred ship.
i can guarantee you that whatever harassment zutara shippers get on their zutara content, kataang shippers get ten times the amount of that FROM ZUTARA SHIPPERS. and it doesn’t even extend to just kataang shippers because your posts have actively been harming the live action actors, too. did you know that gordon - at the age of 12 - saw all of your ridiculous “he literally looks like her son” posts that were scattered across social media to the point where he told one youtuber that that youtuber was the only one to ever express positivity regarding his casting as aang?
anyone with limited experience in the atla fandom that doesn’t ship zutara can tell you all the amount of times they’ve had with zutara shippers jumping down their throats & forcing them to ship it. i’ll never understand this phenomenon in which shippers of the most popular ship in the fandom want to pretend to be oppressed. it’s not a phenomenon to just zutara shippers, but I’m sure the origins can be traced to zutara shippers after not getting their canon.

Not that anybody asked, I just wanted to do this.
A couple of things:
-Katara’s sarcasm and sense of humor are very underrated, and her bending growth is the best in the series. I would marry this woman.
-I hate Ozai because he is abusive to his children and an all around psychopath. However, I do believe that he is a very well written villain.
-Into the Inferno (Sozin’s Comet pt 3) is my fav because I think it has the best fights in the finale and I love me good fights.
-The Great Divide is boring as hell.
-I have many problems with Aang. That deserves another post.
-Ty Lee is super badass and I think she isn’t talked about enough.
-Azula’s plans were brilliant and I think if she didn’t go off the rails, she would’ve been the best firebender of all time.
-In my opinion, Zhou is not a bad villain, I just like him less than others like Azula, Ozai, and Long Feng.
-Zutara has a lot of chemistry in my opinion. I think about them daily. I read fanfics. I write fanfics. I will forever ship them.
-Obviously there are worse ships out there than Maiko (Insest, pedophillia, etc.), but of the cannon ships they are my least favorite, followed by Kataang. I may elaborate on this later.
-Water is my favorite element because I just love how much waterbending looks and if I could be a bender I would definitely choose water.
-Obviously the Fire Nation does terrible things, but before and after the war, they are the most inclusive and functional nation by far. I also just think it has the best natural beauty.

Labor of Love
belated tumblr post for @kataang-dungeon's Kataang Smut Weekend day 3 prompt: Work (pregnancy/labor). Rated E. 3.8k words. Written for @coyotelemon after a feral screaming session a million years ago and just finally finished.
“Sweetie? I’m home!” “In here!” Katara called back, and Aang knew exactly where to find her. She had barely moved from her spot in days—ever since the other healers (and Aang) had insisted she stop working—other than for daily walks with her husband to keep her blood flowing and for her frequent trips to the bathroom. Aang had even set a pitcher of water and a basket of her favorite foods on the table next to her that morning, so she wouldn’t have to waste her energy on that. He walked in and knelt down in front of where Katara was sprawled on the couch, taking one foot in his hands and gently massaging it. Her ankles were so swollen, now. She had been carrying this baby for too long. At least a week longer than any of the other healers (including Katara) had expected. He knew she was sore and tired, because the baby had been moving so much and pressing on her bladder so frequently that she was barely sleeping already. Aang had just gotten back from an “emergency” council meeting. He had already informed the Republic City Council that they would be operating without him for at least a few months as he attended to his wife and new child, but they kept finding reasons to send hawks over, requesting his immediate assistance. Katara had insisted he go that morning, saying that she still wasn’t having regular contractions and that someone would send him a hawk if anything changed. “Plus,” she had said that morning, as he reluctantly pulled on his robes, “you can remind them… again… that when things do change, they’ll need to learn how to get on without you for a bit.” Now, though, she moaned gratefully as he heated his hands and worked his way up her calf before switching to the other foot. Unbeknownst to Aang, his heated hands moving firmly up her leg brought another idea to the forefront of Katara’s mind, and subsequently out of her mouth. “Aang, please,” she begged.

I see that both couples I know you ship, Eremika and Anakin/Padmé, are both tragic. And due to unfortunate reasons also a bit toxic. For me I always love tragic couples like these. Were you drawn to Eremika because of the angst or despite the angst?
absolutely because of the angst. i don’t think i have a “type” of ship, exactly, since they can range pretty broadly (kyoru, everlark, and kataang are up there with eremika and anidala for me), but i do like a certain kind of distress and anguish in the couples i root for. like, i used to really weird charlotte out because i rewatched the table scene daily. when i was first hyperfixated on anidala, i used to rewatch their final scene together daily. i love angst, and there’s something Really appealing about relationships where the man is objectively horrific. i think it was my childhood obsession with beauty and the beast lol.
i will also say that i liked eremika when i first got into aot in 2013, when the fandom was dominated by [redacted] shippers. i wasn’t *super* into it, but i did remember thinking that it was clear mikasa was the love interest. i became Obsessed with them in 2021 after 139 came out. i was paying attention when 138 came out too, but the cabin scene didn’t speak as much to me as eren’s dumb tantrum did. i think it’s because he was such a possessive brat about it and i loved that LMAO. if a man is jealous, i pay attention!

hello! I once heard the opinion that the zutara fandom (the loudest and most toxic part of it, of course, we are not talking about normal people who just enjoy their ship) has features of cultist, sectarian thinking and organization. I haven't thought about it much, but recently a friend of mine who understands quite a lot about cults and sects and to whom I showed the most popular zutara blogs and their meta tags here, tumblr (I didn't push him on this idea, we were just chatting about fandoms) said that according to the type of thinking zutara's fandom has features of a religious cult. this thought seemed interesting to me. what do you think about it?
I'd say it's true, but it does not apply solely to Zutara, or even to the ATLA fandom.
I lost count of how many times I've seen some legit insane news here in Brazil about angry fans of some soccer team violently beating, or straight up murdering, people that were wearing the "wrong" t-shirt after a game.
Harry Potter had the weird thing with the Snape wives, and now has the current cult-like TERF bullshit JK Rowlling encourages on a daily basis.
One of my cousins is VERY into K-pop and told me some WILD shit about some idols literally have to sign contracts that forbid them from dating (or at least publicly dating) anyone because half of the marketing around their persona is "You, regular person, could totally date them!" and faced some ABSURD backlash, including death threats towards them and their partners, when they were revealed to be in a relationship.
Anything, no matter how mundane, can be used by some disturbed people to excuse/encourage awful behavior. It's usually a result of desperate, lonely people needing to find ANYTHING that makes them feel like they belong, are part of a group, of a community, to the point that they shut off from anything else and become obsessed. That kind of thing has always existed, but BOY, has the internet made it sooooooooooo much worse.
I mean, seriously, just look at the things the "extreme" zutara fans do.
Creating whole conspiracies to justify why their was totally canon until some evil authority screwed it over, lying about anything and everything that happened both in canon and in the making of the show, even going as far as creating fake "evidence" of some huge power struggle between Bryke and other writers (mainly Ehasz).
Harrassing, bullying, doxxing and threatening anyone that has a different opinion, and justifying their actions with "Oh, but the people were doing this to ship Kataang/Maiko, which means they're all raging mysogynists, rape apologists, and 100% against interracial relationships."
The constant claims of "Bryke are creepy pedos because they only pushed Kataang because they are attracted to Katara, a cartoon character, and thus are attracted to real-life 14-year-olds! That's even the real reason why Aang is bald! To look like one of them!" that are not only ridiculous but could EASILY lead to a lawsuit, and ignores the fact that Zutara, like any popular ship, has tons of smut of it even though both characters are underage - make it make sense!
And, of course, the classic "This bad behavior people accused some of us of is completely false! I didn't see it, so it didn't happen! Nobody here would do that! Never one of us! Must have been one of them, the evil fans of kataang/maiko/(insert any ship for either Zuko or Katara here)!"
Some of the bad apples in the Zutara fandom are just entitled assholes, but I'm also pretty sure that some of these people legit need to see a mental health professional. There's being passionate about a ship and being upset that it didn't happen, and then there's being downright delusional.
And before anyone tries to pull the ableism card on me: I've been through this shit. Thankfully I've never reached the point of ever harming anyone in any way, but I was a mentally ill child/teenager that just latched onto the media I liked, and it made it my whole life.
I had full on panic attacks because the power went out and I couldn't watch my favorite TV show, and I'd cry for DAYS when something bad happened to my favorite characters. I legit started showing signs of depression because one of my favorite bands had broken up, to the point that my parents were really fucking scared. I got FURIOUS at an annoying classmate in school who talked shit about my favorite singer, to the point that I legit had to get away from them as fast as humanly possible because I was three seconds away from starting a physical fight - again, all because a random kid whose opinion on literally anything else wouldn't have meant a damn thing to me.
That is not being passionate. That is not being a loyal fan. That is a clear sign that something is VERY wrong and that you need some help FAST. See a therapist, deal with whatever it is that is pushing you to act like that, THEN engage in fandom stuff as much as you want. But don't ever make this your whole personality.

i always thought zuko stans were annoying but the more i explore this fandom, the more i see how the most insufferable people are actually the azula stans and aang stans - especially the ones that hate zuko.
the user leg-grestrade is this major aang and kataang stan who is so aggressive and rude, even towards other zuko haters. if you've ever interacted with them you would know they're a huge asshole. i don't like the user zuko-always-lies for his annoying azula stanning behavior but leg-grestrade attacked him for no reason. i can't believe we have this kataang stanning woman pushing 30 years old and still acting like this.
i used to be neutral towards kataang and i didn't care for aang, but seeing these types of really hostile kataang shipping aang stans make me hate aang and kataang. everyday they cry about aang haters being mean to them even though they're all huge assholes themselves. gene yang said he liked the zutara ship ONE time and they've been completely awful to him ever since. yang wrote in one of his journal entries for his site how he was getting hatemail from kataang shippers on a daily basis. they blame all the issues on the comics on him even though michael dante dimartino is ultimately the one who provides the outline and approves of the story. i guess for them its easier to hate on yang than it is on bryke since a lot of them worship bryke for giving them kataang. i always noticed a lot of kataangers tend to think of bryke as geniuses and avoid criticizing them.
as for azula stans, honestly, they seem to live in some other dimension of idiocy. they try to brush away the fact that azula tortured suki in prison by bringing up how "azula would never do something like that" and they will write meta about how suki is actually a shallow character so her torture doesn't matter. and they will go on and on about how zuko and iroh are actually evil.

my 2022 writing year in review!
Thank you so much to @feeisamarshmallow for the tag!
1. Number of stories posted to Ao3: 32 separate stories! I was very fortunate to have a productive, joyful writing year, and I also started writing shorter stories rather than longer ones this year.
2. Word count this year: 74,396
3. Fandoms I wrote for: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Gilmore Girls, Grey’s Anatomy, Heartstopper, Murdoch Mysteries, Severance, Supergirl, The Fault in Our Stars, The Martian, Virgin River
4. Pairings: Aang/Katara, Sokka/Zuko, Jake Peralta/Amy Santiago, Rory Gilmore/Logan Huntzberger, Charlie Spring/Nick Nelson, William Murdoch/Julia Ogden, Kara Danvers/Lena Luthor, Hazel Grace Lancaster/Augustus Waters, and Beth Johanssen/Chris Beck.
5. Stories with the most:
Kudos: i’ve been around the globe, found a diamond wrapped in gold (but it doesn’t shine like you) which is my Supercorp friendship bracelet story! I just finished it and I was so happy to be able to give it a satisfying, cute ending.
Bookmarks: same thing as above! this was a really popular story :)
Comment threads: to know you like the back of my hand, which is my collection of a dozen one-shots I wrote for Supercorp.
Word count: same thing as above! this fic was my longest this year, at 9,100 words total.
6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): I’m going to go with memories painted in much brighter ink, the Heartstopper fic I wrote about Nick and Charlie dealing with their negative relationships with Harry, who decides to apologize to them both for being a bully and a bad friend. That fic is also tied with please remind me to forget you for the story I’m most proud of (this one is my Murdoch Mysteries story about William and Julia reconciling after she marries the wrong guy.)
They were both really interesting missing-moments stories that included letters (I’m a big fan of epistolary communication! letters are so intimate and personal!) and I don’t think most other writers would have published something like this. It felt exciting and special to focus on these parts of canon and expand them, exploring the characters’ curiosity and heartbreak at the same time.
7.  Work I’m least proud of (and why): Definitely i strung you a halo of stars, which is a collection of 4 stories I wrote for Supercorptober. I was really anxious and stressed when I wrote these stories, and I felt like I kind of had to “keep up” because it’s a fandom holiday and we had daily challenges. The writing became more about maximizing word count rather than enjoying writing, which is why I only did Supercorptober for about 5 days before quitting. I was just too busy and uninterested in the end.
8.  Share or describe a favorite review you received: Oh, I have so many! @nostradamus0 is kind enough to leave screaming reviews on many things I write (thank you for that, friend) and I also got a lot of really lovely reviews on Supercorp stories I wrote about parental trauma or forgetting your native language or struggling with anxiety.
I really like to write hurt/comfort and fluff combined, and it was so nice to see that my stories were able to comfort other readers who were also dealing with stress and hurt.
Aaaaand I got so many lovely reviews on the fics I wrote for Kataang or Heartstopper. I love being able to write things that entertain and make people happy. I’m quite good with banter (it’s my main thing and the easiest thing for me to write) and I insert it wherever possible.
9.  A time when writing was really, really hard: Supercorptober! I was pushing myself to do a monthly challenge when I had schoolwork and other stuff to deal with, and it just didn’t work out for me. I’m glad I quit so early. Quitting is good and quitters deserve hugs and chocolate. If you can’t sustain something, taking a step back and interrogating why is a good idea.
10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: Helly R from Severance. She is amazing. I would die for her. I wrote about her in my reputation precedes me, a ficlet about her character growth, and I can’t say anything more without spoilers. Severance is the best tv show I’ve ever seen. I don’t usually like thrillers/horror but Severance is light on both and it’s just so GOOD at exploring the ways that capitalism will devour you from the inside out.
11. A favorite excerpt of your writing:
this is a scene from (whoever said I would find someone new) must’ve never met you, a Supercorp fic set at a southern bar where Supercorp have broken up in the beginning and they get back together by the end.
I really loved writing Lena’s experience at this bar, The Great Beyond, and creating OCs who are all friendly and loving. I’m also just ... weirdly excited to write the OCs falling in love with each other because they are all gay? And I love a good queer southern love story.
Fuck. She should’ve just turned into bed early instead of driving out here to the bar, The Great Beyond, to say hey and good evenin’ to the regulars. Tim probably groaned when he saw her. Marcie in the corner cheered gently when she walked in. Lena always dances with her when it’s eleven and they don’t wanna go home yet. And then there’s Lucas, about to get his first tattoo, and Connor who keeps his guitar in the backseat. Just in case he figures out the bridge of the song he’s been writing since last year, y’know. He and Tim came up with the chorus together.
Connor won’t tell you he plays but he can sing you a story, rock you to sleep, take you on an old-timer’s tour of dreamland. Lena’s been before. She’s seen the milestones and skipped them across the pond. The road on the way there’s a little rocky, but it’s nothing she can’t handle.
Ashley sits front and center, welcoming the warm glow of orange light. Steph tilts back in her chair and offers once again to braid Ashley’s hair, or perhaps Lena’s. Steph had been laid off from the beauty salon last month. No luck since.
Lena said yes once, on a Saturday when she found an old receipt from the time she and Kara went and got ice cream at Braum’s, and Steph wiped her tears away with a ratty napkin before twisting Lena’s hair into a Celtic knot.
“No, I’m Irish,” Lena blurted, “and I dunno if I’m a Celt-”
Steph laughed. “Who’ll ever know ‘cept for you?”
12. How did you grow as a writer this year: I started writing for different fandoms instead of being strict with myself about “the core fandoms” that I had to stick to! I wrote shorter stories (like, 1500 words or less) because I liked it and I didn’t have time to do a big multichap fic. I branched out. I had fun while writing. I wrote meta for Grey’s Anatomy and Virgin River. I quit writing for The Resident because that show took a SERIOUS downturn in quality recently, and I don’t ever want to watch it again (if you know, you know.)
This was a good year and I had so much fun writing shorter stories, and different stories for various tiny fandoms.
13. How do you hope to grow next year: I want to get better at not defining success through the number of hits/words/comments/etc. a story has. Stories are allowed to exist just as they are. Less popular stories aren’t “bad” or “not worth my time.”
I also hope to finish up some of my unfinished multichap stories, and mayyyybe write more for B99 (I only wrote 1 B99 story this year, and it was meta rather than fiction, which is a big change from previous years when I wrote a lot of peraltiago fic.) AND I want to keep writing whatever I want, even if that means writing for new fandoms that I’ve never tried before.
I like writing things out of love I’m not a good visual artist; I’m not good with textiles or gifs or drawing, and I often wish that I could translate the images in my head to art on a page. But fic is one of the ways that I like to give back to fandom, collaborate with fandom, meet people in fandom. I love that I can have a fleeting idea and publish a story about it in the next 12 hours.
14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc):
@nostradamus0. It’s not even a question. He is lovely, and lets me scream at him about Kataang even though he’s never seen ATLA, and I can send him excerpts of my stories anytime.
15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: EVERYTHING from real life shows up in my writing.
must’ve never met you was inspired by neotraditional country music of the 2010s/2020s (it’s great! it’s making a comeback!!!)
many of my supercorp fics are inspired by my cats and my narwhal painting (technically, it’s a poster of whales, but there’s a narwhal in there) and my desperate desire to have a lamp shaped like a jellyfish.
I constantly write scenes where people bake because I get frantic if I don’t bake for several days. Oh, and I also constantly write scenes where people daydream and write letters/letters and cherish the softness of their homes because I’m a gentle person.
16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: Uh, overusing italics is a really bad idea because it ruins the flow of your sentences. Getting a good flow often involves reading your work in your head so you can imagine the ups and downs of the words.
Writing takes time and you’re allowed to be frustrated that you’re not “better.” Give yourself time and space. Write as often or as rarely as you want.
Write down fic titles and AU ideas in a list in Google Docs because you may want them later. Don’t be afraid to be silly or gloomy or whatever; this is your blank page! Your words are the ink!!!!
Reading other people’s work, whether a published book or a fic or stuff like poetry, is a great way to get better at writing. Offering to be someone else’s beta reader, such as on AO3, is often a great way to make friends and learn more about writing. Oh, and try not to judge your writing too harshly. You still have so many good things waiting for you.
17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: hmmmmmm I do have 2 peraltiago AUs (the you’ve got mail AU and the Jake-is-undercover AU) that I want to finish sometime in the future.
I also have several ATLA stories that are random memory-tangle-ideas (the Aang-Spiderman AU, the Katara is undercover as both a Kyoshi Warrior and the Painted Lady AU, the Kataang Mulan AU, the Zukka turtleduck petting zoo AU, the Zuko-emotional-support-dragon story) that I hope to write eventually! Or, at least, they will stay good dreams.
18. Tag some writers whose answers you’d like to read:
@nostradamus0, @chocomd, @flameohotwife, @dearestpartnerofgreatness
and anyone else who wants to participate! If you see this, you are free to do this tag if you like! <3

before aang passes away katara is at his bed alone. he worries about leaving her and their family behind, and letting the world down again. katara tells him that they will be okay, that he can finally rest now. he spent his whole life worrying about others and she wants him to be peaceful. it is the truth.
she tells him that she will be okay without him. it is the one thing she tells him that day that she lies about.

Okay so.
~It’s Old-timey-Aang-hc-time-because-it-makes-me-smile~
Going on the theory that the 100 years that Aang missed in the ice is comparable to someone from 1900 waking up in the year 2000 (just for argument’s sake because it’s fun and because the technological jump makes it all the funnier to me), the slang changes would be the same, yes? And dating rituals/normalities?
SO
The words “boyfriend/girlfriend” weren’t popularized until the 1950s (arguably first used in the end of the 19th c. to maybe 1909-ish) with the rise of the terms’ use (and their meaning) resulting from their reference in rock and roll. Before then, they weren’t used as often in the way we understand them today, and they weren’t NEARLY as widespread, if known at all in most areas of the world.
THEREFORE
May I propose that Aang would not know what the terms boyfriend/girlfriend mean? And thus humbly ask that you let the hijinks (and sweet kataang implications) that would result from such a revelation about the airboibean run amuck in your imagination because they are ✨glorious✨
A few of my favorites (some not as plausible as others, I know I know, but they make me happy to think about okay?):
1. Aang would ask to ‘court’ Katara (and, very a la Mr. Darcy now that I think about it, uses the Headband dance to show her that they make good ‘dancing partners’)
2. He would ask her on overly-romantic dates in a very old-school way because he is, literally in every sense of the word, old-school.
3. PDA and such would usually be initiated by Katara until Aang eventually catches on and becomes enthralled with the idea of being able to hold Katara’s hand in public. He is a little bit shy about kisses and such in front of others, though (only at first, obviously). He cherishes their tender moments as theirs, nobody else’s, but he swoons with over-dramatic flare like every kiss was a blessing from the heavens so he must thusly treat it as something holy (if for no other reason than to make his sweetie flustered and smile stupidly in good nature). Once he gets it, it's kisses left right and center like in the comics, though❤️
4. The airbenders loved their poetry, and Aang creates pet names for Katara that wax very Shakespearean (I’ve made a long list, but here are a few: my comet and my moon, my soul of another heart, my dear panda lily, the song of my heart’s dance (personal favorite❤️), moondance, etc.)
5. He is the kind to pull out chairs and open doors and bow and give hand-kisses, and he gets flustered out the wazoo when Katara goes out of her way to beat him to the punch and do it twice as dramatically
6. He is completely and utterly overjoyed about the term ‘girlfriend’ and so he uses the term in every introduction and conversation (could be argued that he was still getting used to the term when he introduced her to the future air acolytes and Katara had to remind him of her 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒏𝒌 𝒚𝒐𝒖 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 status❤️). This, of course, further supports the ’that's my wife’ hc
7. Before he knows the term, there is mass confusion. Especially when Katara calls him her boyfriend for the first time and poor Aang is befuddled and confused because he thought they had always been friends:c
8. Bonus point hijinks: someone (probably Sokka) explains the term, when Aang asks him, as a word meaning a person you’re really good friends with *wink wink*, so Aang walks around for a short while referring to everyone in the Gaang as his boyfriend/girlfriend.
9. He refers to himself as Katara’s ‘suitor’ because ‘boyfriend’ is the term he struggles with the most, especially since he had dreamed of being her ‘suitor’ for so long that the reference to the term is branded into his very soul.
10. Suki is the one to pull him aside and explain the terms boyfriend/girlfriend properly (and dating/etc.), and, after having a pleasantly open and nonjudgmental conversation with him (as Suki is oft to have), she gives him the sparknotes of how dating is different now than it was 100 years ago.
I know there might be more than a few holes in this lil hc, but I learned about the boyfriend/girlfriend thing and fell in love with old-timey/old-school Aang okay? It fits into my ‘Aang is a ~little shit~’ narrative, and I adore it sososo much😭

We've talked so much about kataang parenthood and the cloud babies, but I'm always up for hearing more of your thoughts on them. Really, I'd just give you that and let you talk away wherever it takes you, but how about this for more of a prompt.
Here's one that's been percolating for me lately. The cloudbabies grow up in a family that's not just their parents, but their entire community. Both Aang and Katara grew up in communities full of extended aunts/uncles/cousins (whether biological or not) surrounding them, and likewise their kids grow up on an island full of Air Acolytes that act as extended family for them. They're emersed in Air Nomad culture as a daily part of their lives. Both Aang and Katara would work to make sure they have traditional Water Tribe culture as part of their upbringing too, of course. (As you know I HC that Uncle Sokka is heavily involved in all their upbingings.)
I'd just love to hear your thoughts on anything extending form that or related.
Oh, absolutely. You knew what to send to make me go off, hahaha. Kataang as parents gets, I think, wholly misrepresented based on a couple one-off lines in LoK that were meant to show that even our favorites weren't perfect in parenthood (really, who is? I try my best but I know I fail my kids in different ways all the time), the same way the writers were able to show that each character had flaws in the original series. Aang has so much on his shoulders that OF COURSE he's not going to be able to balance that perfectly. And sometimes he (AND KATARA) will be too tired at the end of the day to think straight and might not be as attentive as they could/should be. I don't know how much of the criticisms are coming from people who are actually parents, though; who know intimately the constant daily (hourly?) pressures parents of multiple kids with widely varying personalities and needs are under. None of the parents I've talked to have felt this way.
I also love this idea of the cloudbabies being raised in a communal lifestyle, because you're right that both Aang and Katara grew up that way. Everyone always paints that as a point of conflict for Aang and Katara--that Aang wouldn't know anything of a nuclear family structure but really, as much as Katara did know that, her tribe was so close-knit that they were all like family as well. This was only amplified after the men went off to war and only the women and children were left behind. The cloudbabies probably have favorite acolytes that they run to when their parents are busy, and of course Sokka and Suki and Toph and Lin and Su are always around, too, or they're in the city visiting them.
And Aang and Katara take care of Toph's and Zuko's (and potentially Sokka's if he had any) kids like their own, too, whenever they're at their house. Once they're teens/preteens, the kids all cross the bay on the ferry themselves and hang out together when they can, and all the adults just know to feed whoever is there and have extra just in case their parents come looking. I'm reaching this stage with my oldest and I can really see Aang leaning hard into this, giving Bumi's friends a ride over on Appa when he sees them in town, telling stories from the war (maybe embellishing a bit) to Bumi's intense embarrassment but his friends' joy, making sure they have an extra fruit pie to take home to their parents after... Aang might not be anybody's pro-bending coach but you can bet he finds other ways to be involved in his kids' lives and is always so, so proud of the little humans he and Katara created, regardless of bending ability, grades, or anything else (though I hc that all the cloudbabies are pretty brilliant in school). They're going to have insecurities and complaints because they're all HUMAN, but they won't doubt for a second that they are loved ("That's one happy family")
Well that became a novel, haha. Thanks for sending me your kataang thoughts(/thots) and for asking for mine, too!
