I haven't seen anyone else talk about this yet so I'm going to assume no one has (and if this is the millionth post about this I am so sorry), but apparently there was a leak at Viacom last month, and one of the things that got leaked was the original Danny Phantom pitch bible, and let me tell y'all, there is some interesting lore to be had. I've taken the liberty of summing up a few notable points, but feel free to read for yourself - it's pretty short.
Jack was originally written as an ex-spy, test pilot... basically if it was a daring job, he probably had it. His IQ was supposedly only one point off from Maddie's, and his bumbling was more of a result of him being more "brave than smart."
Maddie was originally written as "one of the world's most respected theoretical physicists" and the brains between her and Jack. Get this: her full name was supposed to be Madison!
Sam and Danny's psychic connection was actually a result of the accident. When he was in the hospital and still very much saturated with ectoplasm, she gave him a "get better" kiss on the forehead, which sparked the connection. The connection would've manifested in a number of ways, including a perpetual ability to "sense" the other, see visions, and hear each other's thoughts, though it was supposed to be somewhat unpredictable.
Jazz hid her brains from her cheerleader friends because she wanted to fit in with them.
Danny was supposed to be the only person able to see, hear, and interact with ghosts.
On the subject of Danny, his reputation for being a scaredy-cat was much more well-known, even to the point where Sam and Tucker gave him the nickname Danny Phantom before he even had his accident. This kid was scared of his own shadow, frogs, you name it.
Overshadowing was originally called "ghosting," and the more intelligent a person, the more difficult it would be to control them.
Jack and Maddie were hoping to break the barrier between the "Real World" (our world) and the "Unreal World" (the ghost world). They wanted to get through to the spirit realm to be able to communicate with the dead in order to help make the world a better place (think picking Einstein's brain a little more, seeing what other music Mozart has cooking, etc.). That dimensional barrier was damaged when they first tried out their experiment, and Danny - who was hiding out from Dash in the lab - would be caught in the middle.
Much like how fans have interpreted things and how the show tried to imply, Danny felt responsible for unleashing the ghosts into our world and decided to adopt the name Sam and Tucker had teased him with to help put a stop to their reign of terror.
Seriously, y'all should read this. There's a lot of interesting info in here, and really it sounds like such a cool concept?? Like I'll probably add my personal thoughts in a reblog, but there's a lot of potential for untapped creativity from the phandom here. Plus it's always nice to see what's technically official content almost 20 years after the show's premiere.

There’s so much lore in the leak of the DP Pitch Bible thing and yet the most shocking thing to me is that Jazz’s name is spelt Jazmine not Jasmine.
Heck it even makes more sense her name being spelt like that.

I NEED people to know about the Danny Phantom Pitch Bible, which is a collection of ideas that were originally thought of when DP was being pitched to Nickelodeon. Here are some ideas from that:
Jack was a military test pilot who strapped himself to rockets and shot himself across time and space, mainly because he could.
Maddie was a multi Nobel prize winner for her work in metaphysics (so many prizes you could make a wind chime apparently).
Jazz simply wants friends and to fit in, as while she is intelligent, she is rather lonely and doesn’t have friends.
The name “Danny Phantom” was a nickname given to Danny by his best friends, because he was skittish and scared of his own shadow.
The Ghost Zone, or The Unreal, as it was originally called, housed more than just ghosts. It had demons, and other supernatural and mythological creatures!
I need art of these concepts! Please!!!
Here’s the link to the pitch bible!

There's something about the change from Danny and Sam being psychically linked bc of the accident to them being symbolically linked bc of the accident. Going from Sam kissing Danny's forehead (that's still contaminated with ectoplasm) and that creating a shared-psychic bond between them, to her encouraging him to enter the portal which leads to the accident is so fascinating. The shift in agency is huge. Danny is the one who went into the portal, but Sam is the reason he did it. Whereas the psychic-link would have just happened to them passively, in the show it is their shared action that bonds them forever. Their bond is fundamentally built upon action, showing up for each other, being there day-in and day-out.

Valerie Gray from Danny Phantom! From a practice reboot pitch bible I’m doing with a friend.
I wanted an arc about someone already strong growing open and vulnerable. Hopefully that comes across!

Yoooooooo.
I’ve been bitten by the bug, and ye olde nostalgia got me thinking about Danny Phantom again, so I decided to play into that. I recently found the Show’s Pitch Bible, and it got me thinking about how I’d handle the reboot. On top of tweaking Jack and Maddie to make them less bumbling morons and more eccentric geniuses, I’d be aging up the crew, and settling Amity Park in Arkham County up New England way.
Danny, as you can probably tell from his human design, would be somewhat milquetoast, with grungy alternative leanings. Good at science, bad at math. Danny is, at his core, a good kid who loves his family. But he is still a kid.
I’ll probably go into them more as I work on the other characters, but I want to give Tucker, Sam, Jazz, and the Fenton parents more to do, even if it is just in the background. But for now, the Fenton parents definitely have only recently started Fenton Works. It’s been a lifelong dream, and between the two of them they’ve reached a point with their savings that it’s now a possibility. Maddie is a respected physicist, and Jack is… a bit of everything really. Test pilot, super spy, but mostly he’s an engineer. Maddie figures out how a thing works, and Jack can build it. The world of academia was… shocked when the most prominent scientific super couple announced they would be devoting the rest of their lives to pursuing superstitious pseudoscience, and this announcement has called their previous credibility into question, but no one can deny that Dr and Mister Fenton get results, if anyone can prove the existence of the supernatural, it’s the Fentons. Both are haunted by a supernatural experience from their youth.
Tucker Foley would probably have escaped the nerd label by his sheer programming and tech repair skills alone, if it wasn’t for the fact that he’s also a total anime geek, and a self proclaimed furry. Tucker is an unabashed nerd, and not the suave tv friendly type. Cosplays, ttrpg, mmos, comic and action figure collecting, you name it, he does it. Proudly. And he’s been Danny’s best friend since they were in diapers. Inevitably some of that has rubbed off on Danny.
Sam Manson is relatively new in town. She moved in with her grandmother midway through freshman year after things finally came to a head with her super conservative parents. Falling somewhere between socialist and anarchist, classic goth and punk, Sam is a rebel, an activist, and everything your parents warned you about. She’s also the coolest person Danny and Tucker know. Sam has a borderline obsession with the occult, ghosts, demons, witches, you name it, she can’t get enough of it. Which may or may not have something to do with a family secret relating to why certain members of the Manson family have purple eyes?
Jazmine Fenton is Danny’s smarter, prettier older sister. Fascinated by psychology, and obsessed with figuring out the inner workings of the mind. In high school she was a geek. In college she is thriving. Fortunately, Fenton Works is close to the university she’s attending, and that means she’s never far from home, and more importantly never far from her family. Though her relationship with her parents is rocky, she’s been trying to mend fences after getting some perspective on the world. She and Danny were close growing up, and shared everything, so his recent trend of playing everything close to his chest is unnerving for her. She doesn’t understand when she stopped be Danny’s best friend.
That’s alls I gots for now. Maybe I’ll play around with writing a fic, or maybe a comic or something. We’ll see how this all develops.

I was just watching the Ember McClain character spotlight for Nickelodeon All Star Brawl 2, and I came to a bit of a realization. Danny Phantom and Hazbin Hotel are basically following a similar pattern for me.
Both won me over immediately with their art style and afterlife concepts. Both had potential that was hinted at early on, that I would have loved to see explored, that were squandered later (Danny Phantom going from "ghosts are spirits of the dead" in Season 1 to "ghosts are just monsters" in Season 3, Hazbin seeming more episodic and "wacky hijinks" than the serialized character study the pilot implied).
Both had their pitch bibles revealed later that seemed like exactly the kind of thing that I would have loved to pieces (DP having te original plan of Danny's parents being interested in ghosts to learn from the dead, Hazbin having character growth with an early Extermination as a looming threat), but the full show steered away from utilizing those concepts (yes Hazbin isn't out yet, but the confirmed episode titles we know are completely different from the ones in the pitch bible so we can assume those were all scrapped, and Helluva's writing with Adam being involved worries me for Hazbin since Adam wrote for that too). Both shows are created by people who did some shady things, look down on others who aren't at their level, and can't take criticism.
And that really, really hurts.
I will give Butch Hartman this though— at the very least, his character designs didn't all blend in with the background. True, a lot of ghost battles in the show took place on Earth, but a fair few took place in the Ghost Zone, which is entirely green with a bit of purple here and there. And while quite a few of those Purgatory-bound ghosts have green on them, the only characters that are nearly entirely green are the Ectopuses, who are background threats.
In the main ghosts we see, there's tons of variety. Technus has green skin but his white hair and gray coat balance it out. Lunch Lady and Desiree are similar. Skulker has has green hair but his skin and armor are blue (his tiny blob form is green but that's only seen in his first appearance). Heck, a good number of ghosts (Ember, Sydney, Ghostwriter, Walker, Spectra) don't have any green on them at all except for their eyes (which reminds me of a previous anon saying the "different colors = different rings" would work better in Helluva if eye color alone was an indicator of which ring they were from). The Box Ghost doesn't even have a speck of green on him anywhere.
Whereas with Hazbin, every single main character has red prominently in their design.
At this point when it comes to animated shows involving the afterlife, I'm taking a "fine, I'll do it myself" approach and pitching my own work, because every afterlife cartoon I've encountered (can't say afterlife show because The Good Place exists and is great) seems to be disappointing me in the "squandered potential when it comes to the afterlife, exploring morality, and existential themes" department.
I'll admit that half of this is lost on me because I never watched Danny Phantom, but I definitely get what you're saying. It's hard to watch something you loved fly close to the mark, miss, and crash into flames.
It's true. Sometimes you've just got to do it yourself.

Writing my way up to H.G. Wells + J.R.R. Tolkien-tier and beyond
Tumblr media
I mean, I would like to get a few short stories / poems / animation shorts / short films / "software toys" going and by far. So may as well pitch a few of my current narrative draft ideas for initial practice...
I guess I will make it clear that I feel a powerful need to write down immersive / cohesive yet oxymoron Axis victory set of stories. Most likely with some cultural & technological nuances (not about making Nazism, Fascism and others legitimate but definitely challenging some assumptions we societally made from the world wars) & conflicted characters as far as emulating dystopia-writing with a humane / relatable touch.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are not the only narratives I would like to convey, far from it. I got a couple more related to historical "mysteries", my constructed world(s?) slice-of-life-s and overall making optimistic meta-narratives. Like some about my hometown, a couple around specific tools / challenges / design contraints, much about far far away alternate futures and a few drop-in "clef" replacements for some existing works with strong satirist-ic commentary & nuanced intrigue politics...
Here are a couple of such media I hope to express some opinions onto through these "clef" keys.
(Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Twilight, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, Warriors, Chronicles of Narnia, A Song of Ice and Fire, Silmarillion, Bible, standalone X-Men movies, Naruto / Boruto, Tarzan, Conan The Barbarian, John Carter of Mars, Terminator, Predator, Alien, Degrassi, Star Wars, Star Trek, Half-Life, Stargate SG1, How To Train Your Dragon, Frozen, Pirates of the Caribbean, Matrix, Rio, Jurassic Park, James Bond, Homestuck, Spirit Stallion of the Cimarron, Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas, The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado, Helluva Boss / Hazbin Hotel, Ruby Gillman Teenage Kraken, Shrek, Coco, The Book of Life, Ice Age, Mulan, Lord of the Rings, Megamind, Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Lilo and Stitch, Pokemon, Sonic The Hedgehog, Cyberpunk RED + 2077, Halo, Destiny, Pathfinder, Outlander, Genship Impact, Starcraft, Grand Theft Auto, Bioshock Infinite + Burial at Sea, Animal Crossing, Fable 2, Earthbound, Metroid, Splatoon, Bionicle, Chronotrigger, Dishonored, XCOM, Turning Red, Luca, 300, The Time Machine, Brontë, Ethan Frome, Death in Venice, The Hired Girl, Tintin, Watchmen, Jour J, Hellboy, V for Vendetta, Ghost Rider, Asterix, Lackadaisy, Zoophobia, Danny Phantom, Avatar The Last Airbender, Legend of Korra, Code Lyoko, Kim Possible, Powerpuff Girls, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Animaniacs, Boondocks, Totally Spies, Futurama, 6teen, Stoked, Wakfu, Hot Wheels, Discworld, Forgotten Realms, Quake, Coran, Tanak, mythologies, historical fiction, ancestries, Hypnospace Outlaw / Sword Art Online, Zachtronics ('TIS-100' & 'Shenzhen I/O'), Ace Combat, Overlord, Bloody Good Time, Resistance Fall of Man, Perfect Dark, Zelda, God of War, Kaisha...)
Not exhaustive by any margin but yk, the first few up to Alien are definitely deserving some strong reworks...
But yeah, that's kinda my type of creative bar setting (I still am casual but yk I shall outshine Tolkien with all the tools available nowadays), aka making bronze age literature lineage-ing type of timeless works.
Don't mind me if I get started some onto the promised Jucika-derived comic strips and get the ball rolling on my open source workflow (first onto Kate + LibreOffice and eventually in the terminal with Tmux/Fish/Vim and all the other creative writing goodies...)

Visual Aid: Danny Phantom: 3 NEW Ghosts!
Danny Phantom! There's so many cool ways to take the show, and I just love exploring new characters and new things we can put into it. In this video, I thought it'd be cool to show you guys what I've been thinking about lately. I came up with three brand new ghosts to put into the Danny Phantom show. Now, would these ghosts interact with Danny as a younger kid, or they interact with the Danny characters ten years later. You be the judge as we go into the Ghost Zone and and find out about Danny Phantom, three new ghosts. Check it out.
Tumblr media
Ok, the first ghost I thought would be really, really cool, I'm thinking, what would be kind of a scary area for a ghost to appear in? And one of the scariest things I've ever seen in, like, scary movies, when someone looks into a mirror, there's someone behind them they weren't expecting. I thought a ghost coming out of a mirror, who only inhabits mirrors, would be very, very cool. And what would this ghost's name be? This ghost's name would be...
Funhouse. Check it out.
You know, reflection in mirrors in horror movies, the, the imagery is just crazy. Uh, and scary movie and ghost stories and things like that. Seeing reflections of things behind you and having reflections come to life and stuff like that, I thought that'd be perfect for a Danny Phantom ghost. I don't really watch a lot of horror movies, but the ones that I have seemed to feature mirrors all the time. Anyway - and, also, I've seen a lot of movies where someone gets trapped in a fun house or just reflections going on all over the place. So I thought that was a pretty cool ghost power to give a ghost villain for Danny Phantom.
So here's Danny Phantom ten year later, in his Ten Years Later outfit and all of his reflections in a fun house mirrors are coming to life. That's what Funhouse does: he brings reflections to life in a horrible, scary way. So the more reflections of you that are there, he will, he will embody, he will inhabit, so suddenly, instead of fighting just a ghost, you're fighting a hundred reflections of yourself. He probably reflects the darkest parts of you too, which would be very, very strange and very, very cool for a villain if you ask me. So I think Danny fighting this new ghost, Funhouse, would be - would it be fun? Probably not so fun. But you know what? It's be really cool. Let's reflect on that.
Alright, what's you guys think of Funhouse? I love Funhouse. I love how he can bring every one of his reflections to life so there's a virtual army of Funhouse ghosts around Danny Phantom.
Coming up next is a very cool ghost, and I think this ghost is fun because there's a lot of ghosts on Danny Phantom that control things. We have Technus that controls technology, we have Vortex that controls the weather, but this ghost controls insects. And she not only controls insects, I think her form is actually made up of insects. Speaking of form, say hello to Swarm.
Tumblr media
After seeing Ant-Man, how Ant-Man can control ants, I thought wouldn't it be cool because, you know b- bugs make big appearance in horror movies all the time and, and let's face it. Bugs are pretty scary to being with. They're creepy, they're crawly, if used in the wrong way - even if used in the right way they're creepy and crawly - but used in the wrong way they're very creepy. They could be very terrifying. So just imagine a ghost whose entire existence is not just controlling bugs, but when he appears in any form at all, his entire body's made of bugs. Made of insects. Just constantly moving, constantly crawling, constantly, you know, undulating with with bug-weird-incest-ness. And I think that w- that jus- that would be just enough to terrify anybody. And no matter how much, how many holes you put it in it would just get refilled with more bugs because he's a constantly living, you know, e-every part of his body is moving and living. And, and I think it's very scary. Anyway, uh just an- and th- then then to draw this character, I though, oh I've got to draw a swarm of bugs. You've ever tried to draw a swarm of bugs before? It, it's a *laughs* it's, drawing a swarm of bugs is very, very challenging.
So anyway, I wanted to draw Danny here, uh, in his Ten Years Later outfit fighting Swarm, of course getting overwhelmed at first. But like any good hero, Danny would rally to the cause. But I don't even know what bugs would be the most ter- it wouldn't even be just, you know, insects, I mean I'm including spiders too. Yes, I know they're arachnids and stuff, but I'm including spiders as well, but imagine being made of spiders and bugs - I mean, this would be very terrifying. So this is a picture of Danny Phantom, ten years later, fighting a brand new ghost: the creepy, the crawly, the icky *shudders* Swarm.
All right, Swarm. What did you guys think of her? That, to me, is a pretty creepy ghost. Uh, it's like one of the plagues of Egypt in the Bible.
*dumb ad for SquareSpace I'm not dealing with*
Tumblr media
The last ghost I thought of, this one I think is the creepiest of all because, you know, you see in movies sometimes that kids have these really creepy dolls. They'll be asleep in the room, they wake up and it's pitch black in the room but they'll see the doll staring back at them. Creepy toys, and just creepy playthings, and play, playthings hey... There's a cool name for a ghost. Say hello, to Plaything.
Alright, now this ghost I couldn't wait to draw. Plaything. How many creepy, scary movies have you seen where a doll is used as the creepy thing in a kid's room that the kid is terrified of. And of course, it ends up being the terrifying thing when the doll comes to life or whatever. Anyway, I thought this ghost, Plaything, would be the perfect ghost to inhabit or embody just, you know, child's toys and and and things you play with. I didn't want to draw the whole ghost. I think it's just great having him in the corner of a room. Uh, Danny's gonna face off with him for the first time. Probably has never met him before, has no idea how to deal with this guy, but just fighting a creepy doll-inhabiting ghost who can just, you know, take over the sweetest thing and make it super scary. That's kind of scary to me, so here's Danny Phantom, ten years later - well, his leg ten years later - about to face off with a brand new ghost: the terrifying, the creepy, Plaything.
All right, there you go. Plaything. Petty creepy, pretty cool. So we have three ghosts, Funhouse, Swarm, and Plaything. Which one of those three did you like the best? Please leave a comment in the comment section down below. What are the things I should add to the Danny Phantom universe? New powers, new ghosts, new characters? It's up to know. Let me know, I'll put it here.

SOMETHING IS UP WITH BUTCH HARTMAN...
...And it might not be what you think it is.
(VERY long post/sort of essay, a lot more beneath the cut.)
TLDR: Butch is not the devil, he is flawed, and there’s almost certainly someone else behind a lot of what’s happening right now.
I’d like to start this off with saying that even though this blog is Pretty Empty and doesn’t have any other content from Butch Hartman’s shows (Danny Phantom, Fairly Odd Parents, etc.) on it, I watched his work as a kid and loved it. I’ve been a fan of Danny Phantom for years, and I’ve seen a lot of Butch hate.
Today I’d like to offer you another perspective on what might be happening with Butch, and why we should, I don’t know. Maybe lay off on the hate just a little...? He is by no means a perfect person, and has made mistakes, but the same can be said of any person.
After a friend of mine (@sarasanddollar) mentioned having mixed feelings about recent events (specifically, the OAXIS controversy), we had a conversation about it. She was coming from the perspective of someone who has defended Butch in the past, and I asked her about that as someone who has disliked Butch for a long time. I was curious to see what she had to say.
She made several good points, which I will summarize. You can also view the most important snippets of that conversation HERE.
One of the reasons many Danny Phantom fans (or Phans) dislike Butch so intensely is because of the terrible writing and overall execution of Season 3 of the show, especially the finale (Phantom Planet).
Many Phans attribute this directly to Butch himself. And it’s true that he had a much heavier hand in Season 3 than the first two seasons! But he’s not the only one at fault here. As far as either of us could see, Nickelodeon basically axed his show (as they have with many shows), leaving Butch without most of his skilled team while creating the third season.
Butch is by no means the BEST creator or writer out there. His greatest skill seems to be in coming up with creative pitches for shows, and the execution of these ideas is best left to a team who knows what they’re doing. But that’s the thing: Butch had a team. Can you imagine suddenly losing the team you’re working with and trying to handle an entire animated show almost entirely on your own? No wonder it was a mess, that sounds terrifying.
Many people believe that Butch is anti-LGBT, and most of those people frame it as an intentional thing. That honestly seems unlikely, though.
Butch’s work has many scenes or even entire episodes that have sexist undertones or demonstrate a lot of toxic masculinity. Often, this is even the joke in and of itself.
This seems to be more the product of the way he himself was raised than anything else, though. As far as either of us are aware, he’s never outright said anything for or against the LGBT community. Honestly, he’s not LGBT, so why should he?
Butch also seems pretty ignorant or uncomfortable when it comes to things he hasn’t directly experienced for himself, leading to comments like the one he made about introversion.
Beyond that, he allegedly kicked any people posting/liking LGBT content off of his Danny Phantom forums. The thing is, back then, almost ALL slash ship content was Pompous Pep (Danny Fenton/Vlad Masters). Making no comment on my personal feelings about the ship, it should be noted that this depicts an explicit sexual relationship between a 14-year-old boy and a man in his 40s. It’s understandable that Butch wouldn’t want explicit content of a pedophilic slash ship being associated with his show.
His way of dealing with it may have been excessive, but almost all of the LGBT content he was seeing was also pedophilia.
It’s also worth noting that almost all details about the Forum Days of the Danny Phantom fandom are now being passed around via word of mouth. Even in text form, people’s biases do change the tone of a situation.
Given recent events, many people are spreading around anything connecting Butch to religion. This deserves a closer look too, though.
Here’s something I didn’t know until Sara told me: Butch Hartman was not always a Christian. He wasn’t raised into it, “brainwashed” as a child and blindly following those values as an adult. He allegedly converted a year or two into the production of Fairly Odd Parents, well into his adult life. Before that, he was apparently an atheist.
This man has one show about magic and another about scientists and ghosts. His shows have sexual jokes, witchcraft, violence, and all sorts of things you’d expect a super-conservative Christian to avoid. So why do we all act like he’s always BEEN that super-conservative Christian?
It may have something to do with how people tend to associate Christianity with the corrupt or incompetent white men who run a significant portion of the planet. The exact reasons are probably different from person to person.
This, of course, DOES NOT give Butch any reason to act like Christians are oppressed. He is not the “living embodiment of ‘one of these things is not like the other’” as he put it.
That being said, it seems as if his shows are largely detached from religion (until now). They have morals, sure, but all Nickelodeon shows have lessons for kids, many of which also happen to be mentioned in some form somewhere in the Bible.
So it seems kind of fishy that Religious Values are suddenly such a huge deal for him... which leads me to the point of this entire thing.
When it comes to the OAXIS scam, we might not be the only ones who are being played.
It seems very likely that Butch Hartman himself is also being played.
Hear me out.
With the context of Giving The Children Jesus, some of the more confusing parts of the way OAXIS was pitched make more sense. But at the same time, I find it very difficult to understand how this man created so much content for children (and RAISED a child) with such a fundamental lack of understanding when it comes to how families and society work.
After thinking about it, I realized that this feels very familiar.
Someone I was once very close with had a similar experience about a year ago. For both of them, it seems to have gone something like this:
The person in question starts off not knowing/caring about a cause. At some point, they are introduced to this cause and join, but it does very little to change their work or public life. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, they have a radical change in lifestyle and behavior, while screaming an extreme or radical version of that cause’s message from the metaphorical rooftops.
For the person I used to be close with, this “cause” was Isogenix. (For more information on operations like this one, consider watching this video.) For Butch, it seems like that cause is... saving young people with religious lessons and “pure” media.
With the person I knew, this whole process started when a group of people who were already working with Isogenix befriended her and gained her trust, then told her repeatedly how good Isogenix would be for her. When she started considering it, they told her it was about self-empowerment and pursuing her true self. This kept going until they’d pushed her into dismantling her circle of friends (anyone who wasn’t working with Isogenix), and the last I’ve heard about it is that she left her husband and children to dedicate herself to “self-exploration” and being a Good Example of Isogenix’s successes.
With Butch, it seems likely that something similar is in the process of happening, though with different results. I wouldn’t be surprised if he met and befriended someone (or several people) who believe that modern mass media is corrupting the youth, and that limiting their media intake to Christian-approved content will fix a lot of the issues in modern society.
I mentioned earlier that Butch seems to have a pretty limited understanding of things outside his own little sphere (based mostly on his unintentional sexism in shows, lack of understanding of healthy male friendships/physical contact, and complete misunderstanding of the 16-50% of the world that is made up of introverts). Considering this, it seems like he’d probably buy into this mentality pretty easily, especially if these people “spoke his language”.
While I personally have a lot of resentment for the people who fall for this sort of tactic, it’s not really the victim’s fault when they become the Face or Voice of the cause. The recruiters often know exactly what they’re doing. Most of them seek out people who are lost, desperate, low on self esteem, or somewhat narcissistic. People who want to make a future for themselves, and sometimes others, usually as “their own boss.” Sound familiar?
Some people are more than one of those things. Butch, given that he recently left Nickelodeon after working there for literal decades, could understandable be a bit lost on what his next step should be. And honestly, he’s shown narcissistic tendencies in the past (have you SEEN his self-insert from Fairly Odd Parents?).
So, as easy as it is to stay mad at Butch Hartman, there’s almost certainly someone else involved... which would also explain some things about his Kickstarter.
The way these things are pitched is designed to make the “victim” believe that it’s all their own idea. THEY took control of their life to make these changes, THEY are the brave example of the Future of the industry, THEY are a self-made person. And most of all, showing other people how they can succeed by joining the organization/school of thought is THE BEST THING EVER.
Which... to me, that seems like it’s a logical reason for Butch’s Kickstarter not actually mentioning anyone else, when he insists other people are involved. Someone likely took his already self-absorbed and narcissistic tendencies and intentionally built them up to make him into the Face and Voice of this project.
Bonus points to them: they also picked the perfect person to use.
Butch is a well-off, reasonably well-known person. He has a pretty large following that is almost exclusively made up of young adults, teenagers, and even children (a detail many people cited as the reason his Kickstarter shouldn’t have worked at all). Many of those young people grew up watching his shows and seeing his content on social media, assuming that the loyal followers we’re talking about are the several hundred thousand people following him on social media platforms. Many of them would take his word as something more important than some random person they’ve never heard of, or so the theory goes.
With this context, his line makes perfect sense:
“You trusted me with your childhood, won’t you trust me with your future?”
He probably does honestly care about what happens, and he’s not trying to maliciously brainwash children with Jesus. It’s far more likely that someone else convinced him that he’s the person perfect for saving “lost” young people, given that many of them trusted him as children. He’s obviously the best person to show them Pure and Good content, away from the “poisonous” aspects of mainstream media.
Butch Hartman isn’t a demon. He’s not evil. He’s not... Trump, or anything like that. He’s a naive man with very little actual understanding of how the world works, who believes that he’s helping.
Which is not to say he’s perfect at all. He’s made lots of mistakes, and he’ll continue to make them.
I just seriously doubt he’s actually the “mastermind” behind this whole operation. He’s little more than a figurehead, probably. And from how he’s acted in the past, he seems to crave the attention and trust of young people. He needs to be someone important to them.
And the worst part of all this might be that he’s not going to get out of this without a disaster. I pity the guy, as much of a mess as all of this already is.
You don’t get out of this kind of position unless it falls out from under you. And when you fully believe and trust in what you’re doing, you’re not prepared for the fall.
You hit the ground hard.

We were given an a short practice task to  prepare a 2 or 3 slide presentation profiling a job role within a studio / production / media company.
My group chose to look at Butch Hartman’s directing job for Nickelodeon. We assigned each other a topic to research for the presentation. I was looking at the Director’s role.
I was mostly interested in how Hartman goes about his day within the studio, therefore I was trying to find resources where he describes his first hand experience. However, I was also open to information from other creative professionals within the studio or with a similar job role.
Hartman worked for Nickelodeon between 1997 and 2018, producing popular series such as the Fairly Odd Parents, Danny Phantom and Tuff Puppy.
I was particularly interested in quotes, because that would significantly reduce the word count, yet giving an opportunity for me to elaborate on the director’s role in a broader sense. Some I thought were useful are:
Tumblr media
Pitching Stage
Typically a pitch would provide the potential producers with the initial concepts of the series. The goal would be to get them intrigued. This would include the introductions of the designs, characters and storyline. The creators would act out minute or so of the pitch.
Eric Coleman, Nickelodeon's vice president/executive producer says: "We're interested in break-out characters that you want to spend time with, that will connect with our audience. And if we can do that successfully, a demand for the merchandising usually follows."
"We spend a lot of time up front developing the characters and the world so the series can sustain for several seasons," Coleman says. "Typically, the creators develop a show bible and then a pilot script. (Hetherington,2006)
This outlines what makes a successful pitch.
Hartman was initially interested in a show about science, but Cartoon Network was already producing the successful Dexter’s Laboratory. He refashioned a fairy-tale godmother scenario:
“So I thought, ‘Maybe I'll do a Cinderella thing with a fairy godmother,’ so I drew Wanda …,” he said as he recalled the story he’s told so many times. “I drew this character and I thought, ‘Well, I've never seen a fairy godfather before,’ so I drew a fairy godfather, which was Cosmo. The rest is kind of history.”  (Schkloven, 2015)
I found this quote useful, because it touches upon the competitiveness of the industry and predicting content trends.
Pre- production
It takes about 10 months for an episode of a show such as “Fairly OddParents” to make it onto your television screen; “Bunsen,” because Hartman and his team are starting from scratch, may not air for a year or two.
About 50 people are involved in shows such as “Bunsen” or “Fairly OddParents,” Hartman says. On a typical day, he might meet with the show’s writers to work on the story, developing the plot and adding jokes. Or he’ll work with the show’s artists to go over character designs and “backgrounds,” “the settings that the characters move through.” He might even sit in on a recording session, listening to the voice actors who bring his creations to life.(Smith, 2016)
This outlines Hartman’s tasks on his productions.
