July Supplemental - The Imperial Guard

The Imperial Guard is a legion of super-powered champions from throughout the intergalactic Shi'ar Empire who acted as enforcers of Imperial law. The original Imperial Guard was formed to stop Rook'shir, a Shi'ar who became the host of the Phoenix Force. The unit continued on as the primary defensive force of The Shi’ar Empire.

When the X-Men sought to rescue the Princess-Majestrix Lilandra from her insane brother, then-Majestor D'Ken, they fought members of the Guard on the planet of the M'kraan Crystal. With the aid of the Starjammers, the X-Men defeated the guard and saved the universe from destruction. The X-Men and the Guard subsequently clashed again after Lilandra had assumed the Shi'ar throne and sought to end the universal threat posed by the Phoenix Force, which had assumed the form of X-Man Jean Grey. This time, the Guard defeated the X-Men, but allowed them to return to Earth after the Phoenix Force seemingly ended its own life.

The Guard continued to serve the Empire, yet became divided when the Mutant known as Vulcan killed Lilandra and assumed the Shi’ar throne. After Vulcan fell in battle against Black Bolt, Kallark (the leader of the Guard) became the stewardship Majestrix of the Shi’ar. Unfortunately, the civil war Vulcan had created left the empire in a weakened state and it was defeated and annexed by The Kree.

In the wake of the Secret Wars event, the Shi’ar Empre became freed from the Kree. Kallark pledged to help revuild the empire and reform the Imperial Guard to once more defend the Shi’ar people.

Key members of The Imperial Guard include:

Kallark The Gladiator

A powerful and nobel being from the planet Strontia who possesses incurable strength, speed and durability along with the capacity to fly through outer space. Earning the supreme title of Gladiator from his native Strontians, Kallark has served the Shi’ar people for over a century as the leader of the Imperial Guard. His son, Kubark, has trained with both the Imperial Guard as well as with The X-Men in preparation of one day succeeding his father as leader of The Guard.

Oracle

Lady Sybyl is a powerful psychic and telepath from the planet Dockrum VII. Recruited to serve the Guard, Oracle has proven herself in battle and quickly became Gladiator’s top lieutenant. She has acted as leader of the Guard during times when Gladiator was unavailable. Oracle was briefly married to her teammate, Flashfire.

Flashfire

Sometimes known as ‘Tempest,’ Grannz is a native of an unspecified alien world and possesses electrokinetic powers where he can summon and mentally manipulate powerful masses of electrical energy. He has served the Imperial Guard admirably for a long tenure and has had an ongoing, tumultuous romance with his teammate, Oracle. Flashfire continues to serve as a high-ranking member of The Imperial Guard.

Nightside

Nightside was a member of an unidentified alien race whose members possess the ability to tap into the other-dimensional realm of the Darkforce, an energy source of pure darkness. Nightside perished while serving the Guard and was later replaced by another member of her species who assumed the same name to continue serving the Empire.

Mentor

Mentor is from a race of super-intelligent beings who posses computer-like minds. Mentor has acted as the primary strategist in the Imperial Guard. During a mission to the Fault, Mentor was forced to give himself over as a host to the Fraternity of Raptors so to augment their firepower. Mentor bonded with a Raptor amulet and was taken over by Strel. His fate in the wake of this adventure remains thus far unrevealed.

Astra

Astra is a native of an unspecified world and possesses attributes that allows her to alter the molecular density of her physical form. This allows her to phase in a fashion where she can pass through solid matter and cause attacks to phase through her without harm. Astra continues to serve as a member of The Guard.

Starbolt

The heroic Starbolt heralds from an unspecified world were his species is composed of a sentient cosmic energy resembling fire. Starbolt can channel this energy so to avail flight and the capacity to fire devastating bolts from his hands. The original Starbolt perished in a mission to The Fault, yet was subsequently replaced with another of his species who assumed the former’s mantle.

Magique

The Guardian known as Magique heralded from an unknown world and possessed magical powers. The powers enabled her to cast certain spells and her most prominent spell was one that enabled her to project highly realistic illusions. Magique was tasked with obtaining the Nega-Bands from the hero, Quasar. Although she managed to defeat Quasar, the bands were taken by Adam Warlock. Magique was seemingly killed in battle against Warlock.

Hobgoblin

Hobgoblin was from an alien species that possess shapeshifting powers similar to that of the Skrulls. He served as a member of the Imperial Guard, acting primarily as a spy and body guard. Hobgoblin sacrificed himself to save Majestrix Lilandra, assuming her guise and taking her place to foil an assassination attempt. Since then he has been replaced by another member of his species who serves the Guard as Hobgoblin II.

Electon

Electon was a native of the Shi’ar home-wolrd and gained the ability to mentally control electrical energies by way of a special experiment. After battling The X-Men on the planet of the M'kraan Crystal, Electon was part of a contingency off Guardians dispatched to obtain the Nega-Bands. Herein Electon perished in a battle against The Silver Surfer.

Manta

The Guardian known as Manta comes from an unspecified alien race and it remain untold whether her powers are endemic to her people or are unique. By opening her cloak, Manta can release a powerful blinding flash of light that has an incapacitating affect on nearly all who see it. Manta has served alongside the Guard since the trial of Jean Grey and remains a crucial member of the team.

Fang

Fang is a member of the Lupak, one of the many extraterrestrial species who comprise the Shi'ar Empire. The Lupak procreate by way of advanced cloning and Fang was created with advanced combat skills and wolf-like physical features. He served admirably as a member of the Imperial Guard until he was killed by The Brood. A new clone of Fang was provided to the Guard to replace him.

Scintilla

The Guardian known as Scintilla heralds from an unspecified alien world. The natives of her planet cultivated the power to alter their size and shrink down to approximately two centimeters in height. Shrinking down in this fashion additionally bestows increased strength and speed. Scintilla has used this ability to serve as a member of the Guard and she remains a part of the team.

Smasher

Vril comes from an unspecified world inhabited by a race of beings closely resembling humans. Outfitted with a specialized pair of goggles called the Exospex, Vril is able to utilize a number of super powers, including flight, super strength and invulnerability (although the workings of these Exospex makes it so he can only use these powers one at a time). Taking on the name of Smasher, Vril has acted as one of the Imperial Guard’s longest-serving members. Smasher perished in a mission to warn the X-Men about Cassandra Nova. His Exospex ended up in the hands of the human, Isabel Kane, who used them to become the new Smasher.

Titan

The Guardian known as Titan heralded from an unspecified alien world of The Shi’ar Empire. The inhabitants of this world possess the power to alter their size and grow instantly to five times their original height and weight. This additionally bestows greatly enhanced strength and durability. Titan used this ability to serve alongside the Guard, ultimately falling in battle during a mission to The Fault.

Hussar

The Guardian known as Hussar heralds from an unspecified alien world. She possess enhanced strength and dexterity and wields an electromagnetic whip. Hussar is highly proficient with this whip and can use it to devastating effect. After siding with Deathbird in an attempted coup, Hussar was expelled from the Guardians. She later joined a force of former guardians who sought out the X-Man, Rachel Grey, in a twisted scheme to gain revenge against the Phoenix Force. Her current status and whereabout remains unknown.

Neutron

Formerly known as Quasar, the Imperial Guardian called Neutron heralds from an unspecified world. The origins of his powers remain unrevealed; he possessed a specialized form housing a quantum singularity whose energy he could manipulate for various effects (including invulnerable, increased strength, flight and energy projection). Neutron served the Guard until he sacrificed himself to save the life of his teammate, Fang.

Warstar

The Guardian known as Warstar is a being composed of two symbiotically linked mechanoid aliens. The smaller of the two aliens is B’nee who acts as the being’s primary intelligence and strategist; whereas the larger of the two, C’cil, acts as the primary body, possessing greatly enhanced strength along with a bevy of offensive and defensive capabilities. Warstar has acted as a member of the Guard since the Trial of Jean Grey and continues to serve as a member of the team.

Pulsar

Sometimes known as ‘Impulse,’ the being called Pulsar heralds from an unspecified world where the inhabitants are beings of sentient energy. Utilizing a special containment suit that offers a humanoid form, Pulsar can release his energies in the form of a powerful, concussive blast emanating from a large visor on his head. Pulsar served the Guard until he perished when his containment suit was breached during a mission to The Fault.

Earthquake

Earthquake was a long standing member of the Imperial Guard who heralded from an unspecified alien world. He possessed the ability to generate seismic energy projections that create tremors beneath the surface of a planet. Earthquake has not been seen from in some time and his fate remains unrevealed.

Kid Gladiator

Kubark is the son of Kallark The Gladiator and possesses many of the same Strontian powers as his father. Following a semester at The Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngster on Earth, Kubark began training alongside the Imperial Guard, readying himself to one day take his father’s place as praetorian and commander of the Guard.

The Imperial Guard and its members were originally designed as analogs of DC Comics' Legion of Super-Heroes. The team first appeared in the pages of X-Men Vol 1 #107 (1977).

—scared , elena screamed only for him to remind her no one is around and other cabins were too far for anyone to hear her . hiding after her father tried to stab her but slashed her thigh when she was running up the stairs .

— unfortunately for her father , her screams ( which cased all light to explode ) were heard by a vampire who fed off the people who were staying in the cabin miles away . while searching for her , the vampire had come in the cabin moments after elena had used her powers to push her father back injuring him enough for the vampire to capture him . elena watched as the vampire ended her father’s life before they turned to her . noticing a darkness surrounding her as if protecting her . calming her down and tending to her wounds , the vampire took her .

— elena grew up travelling about the world with them . being raised by a vampire had little to no rules . coming home to a dead body after ballet recitals at time was suppose to scare any human being but elena now regarded it as normal . fully aware she was human but never the less they treated her as their own .

— moving a lot from school to school elena graduated top of her class although she didn��t go to college went straight into working as an art restorer under the guidance of the vampire who adopted her .

— coming to forks because it’s what the coven decided to do about a month ago .

— elena pretty much does whatever the hell she wants. Despite being a little strange, she is generally a very passionate and gentle person who is quite independent. A little playful at times though elena isn’t shy and she doesn’t hesitate to voice out what she thinks. Because she was raised by vampires who drink only human blood, and watched doing so her morals are highly questionable .

I’ve got another MCU theory/ explanation that Marvel can use

In the 2018 Freefrom original Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger, the Roxxon Gulf Platform that explodes in the opening episode is said to have released an abundance of Darkforce and Lightforce. The darkforce is a “powerful element made of pure negative energy from another dimension” according to the MCU wiki. This is what Tyrone (Cloak) uses to perceive and manipulate people’s fears. Since this explosion takes place in 2009 and in New Orleans, it’s possible to think that at the same time, a man, fleeing from AIM scientists in a nasty storm, injects himself with super soldier serum and crashes his car into a swamp near the destruction of the Roxxon Gulf Platform. The Darkforce mixed with the Super Soldier Serum and with the mystical properties of the swamp turn scientist Ted Sallis into

THE INFERNAL MAN-THING

This would explain for the Man-Thing’s ability to burn his enemies using their own fear and his super strength. It was also allow for more explanation as to how he got into and out of SHEILD custody and then got to the Grandmaster before the events of Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

ok I looked up what happened to Vanisher after getting SPLIT IN HALF YET KEPT ALIVE BY DARKSTAR and in Bizarre Adventures #27 it’s shown that “ The other half of the Vanisher's still-living body ended up in Poughkeepsie, New York. Luckily for him, the X-Men's Cerebro detected his other half, and the team then came to investigate the weird signal he was emitting. When the X-Man Nightcrawler grabbed hold of him to free him, however, both he and the Vanisher were transported to a strange, alternate dimension that served as a dumping ground for inter-dimensional travel. In the process, the Darkforce that had previously trapped Vanisher somehow reformed around him into a skinsuit, which he could manipulate to some degree. Exclusively populated by females, the humanoid beings inhabiting this realm worshipped the men who chanced upon them as gods. The Vanisher was more than happy to let them treat him this way. While he was separated from Nightcrawler, he lounged and dined with the beautiful women of this world. Because neither he nor Nightcrawler could use their teleportation abilities while in this world, the Vanisher used it as an opportunity to experiment with his Darkforce abilities, creating simple items like a flimsy Darkforce sword. When Nightcrawler eventually found the way back home, he came calling for the Vanisher, as they could only return home if they went together. The Vanisher, however, refused to leave this wonderful world, and put up a fight—a pathetic fight, but a fight nonetheless. Eventually Kurt got him through the portal, and they reappeared in Poughkeepsie only moments after they left. The Vanisher was mortified to discover that his Darkforce outfit had disappeared, leaving him completely naked in front of the X-Men. He vanished before the situation could humiliate him any further. “ ...Bizzare Adventure indeed.

Life with the Winter Guard is as it always is. The team serves its function and gets everything done that it needs to. Back from the dead, Laynia enjoys working with them once more and is glad to see that her twin, Vanguard, is doing well ever since her resurrection. Some may wonder about the moral obligations of the Russian based team -- especially with their connection to the mysterious Red Widow -- but Laynia knows in her heart that she’s in the right place. It’s what makes her happy and it’s what she’s always done.

✗ NIKOLAI KRYLENKO (616) is Laynia’s twin brother and fellow member of the Winter Guard. He’s fiercely protective of his sister; when she died, he was so determined to either avenge or restore her that it led to a schism in the Guard. Now, Laynia is back and the two have settled into a routine once more. She knows Nikolai would do anything for her and Laynia returns the sentiments. They remain incredibly close.

✗ NATHASHA ROMANOFF (616) was once the target of the USSR that Laynia was supposed to bring in. Instead of doing so she joined Natasha’s team, the Champions of Los Angeles, and became her friend. The two keep in touch some but aren’t incredibly close. Natasha’s disowning of Russia and Laynia’s continual service to the country will always be a huge difference between the two.

✗ BOBBY DRAKE (616) and Laynia grew close when Laynia was a Champion and the two almost dated -- which, in retrospect, wouldn’t have worked out since Bobby is gay. Laynia didn’t know that at the time and the two ultimately decided to just be friends.

Team Supplemental - The Night Shift

The WestCoast superhero known as The Shroud came to the conclusion that he would prove a much more effective crimefighter were he to pose as a villain and take on the underworld from within. To this end, The Shroud gathered a team of costumed villains, many of whom had been the captive of the villain known as The Locksmith.

Although most of the members of The Shroud’s Night Shift believed they were involved in a criminal endeavor, The Shroud was able to steer them on a course to take down the other criminal factions active in the Los Angeles area. Based in the Tower of Shadows, The Shroud led the Night Shift into battle against a host of criminal organizations, stealing their wealth and splitting it among themselves. The Shroud also kept careful watch over his team, ensuring that none of the group members preyed on the innocent. Under the Shroud's leadership, the Night Shift even allied with Captain America against the Power Broker.

The Shroud’s chief lieutenant on the team was the former Spider-Woman foe known as Dancer Macabre. She often acted as leader of the team during times in which The Shroud’s duties took him elsewhere. During one of these times, Dancer Macabre led the Night Shift in an attack against The West Coast Avengers.

Not long thereafter, the team was taken over by the villain known as The Hangman, who was actually in league with the demonic entity known as Satannish. All this resulted in The Night Shift rebelling against The Hangman and joining forces with Dr. Strange and The West Coast Avengers in order to defeat Satannish.

The squad subsequently disbanded yet a new version of the team later reformed under the leadership of the Superior Spider-Man.

The Shroud

When he was ten years old, Maximiliian Coleridge witnessed his parents gunned down. He dedicated his life to fighting crime, gaining a law degree and studying the Cult of Kali. During his studies, he developed mystical perception and the ability to manipulate aspects of the Darkforce. He became the Shroud and used this costume identity to take down criminals in a very covert manner. He encountered the Fantastic Four and Captain America, and later established a club in Los Angeles called the Cat's Jazz Club, where he could keep watch over the criminal underbelly.

Dancer Macabre

Dansen Macabre was a skilled dancer and priestess of Shiva who visited the Shroud's club in an attempt to kill him because he was empowered by Shiva's rival Kali. This led to an encounter with Spider-Man.

Digger

Roderick Krupp was a grave digger in Los Angeles who encountered the dangerous, haunted mansion called the House of Shadows. He soon moved into the house and from there hosted several late night horror television shows, taking the name ‘Digger.’ After his television shows were cancelled, Roderick started to go insane, believing everyone alive was actually dead. He started to bury people alive, but was apprehended by Jessica Drew and taken into custody.

Skein

A mutant with the ability to control natural fibers, Sybil Dvorak was brought to the United States from her native Rumania by the actor Jason Reed, who promised her fame and fortune, but instead kept her effectively a prisoner in his mansion. Bored, Sybil created a costume and wove delicate wings to become ‘Gyp$y Moth’. She became hedonistic, seeking pleasure and adventure, and when Reed died, his wealth was left to her. She also became an American citizen and encountered Spider-Woman on multiple occasions.

Werewolf by Night

Jack Russell inherited his father's curse of lycanthropy. He has had many adventures with the criminal and super human communities and joined the Night Shift following his encounter with The Locksmith.

Needle

Josef Saint was an elderly tailor who was attacked by hoodlums and lost an eye in the process. He grew enraged by this, and developed the ability to paralyze people with a stare. He battled Spider-Woman prior to becoming a member of The Night Shift.

Tatterdemalion

Arnold Paffenroth was bit-part Hollywood actor who could never really catch a break. He eventually became homeless and bitter towards the upper class, which led him to being mind-controlled by Sarnak, who gave him the ragged costume which he would wear as a super villain. Following encounters with The Werewolf by Night, Ghost Rider and Spider-Woman, The Tatterdemalion ended up a member of The Night Shift.

The Brothers Grimm

Percy and Barton Grimes were corrupt realtors who purchased an old theater in Los Angeles, where they discovered the long-abandoned Brothers Grimm costumes which had been imbued with magical powers. Taking the costumes for themselves as the Brothers Grimm, they fought Iron Man and later Spider-Woman before being captured by The Locksmith. Thereafter, the pair were recruited into the ranks of The Night Shift.

Misfit

Jason Roland was a handsome Hollywood actor who struggled to get his break in the industry. He eventually made a deal with a make-up artist who claimed to be an emissary of the devil; He traded his soul in exchange for success. The make-up artist created a monstrous design for Jason to wear in the film ‘The Demon that Devoured Hollywood,’ which led to Jason's increased popularity. Jason threatened to break off the deal but, on the final day of shooting, he discovered that he was unable to remove his costume, effectively trapping him in a monstrous form. Now known as The Misfit, he battled Spider-Woman prior to being captured by the Locksmith and subsequently joining The Night Shift.

Waxman

The monstrous Waxman had been a scientist suffering from a rare skin condition. An experiment meant to cure him instead turned him into the creature composed of a malleable wax-like substance. He appeared at popular clubs throughout Los Angeles disguised as handsome men and seduced women. Bringing them someplace alone, his body turned into a waxy form during a moment of passion and he would smother them to death. The villain was defeated by Spider-Woman and then imprisoned by Locksmith. he served for a short time as a member of The Nightshift until he was dealt with more permanently by Moon Knight.

The Night Shift first appeared in the pages of Captain America Vol. 1 #330 (1987).
