Fluff 17 - "Do you want me to carry you?"
Tumblr media
Les was fast asleep, head resting on Y/N's knees as she idly combed through the kid's hair, talking to the other Newsies.
Davey, Jack and Les had finished up selling early that day and so had headed back to the lodging house to kill time, and go over future plans for the union. One by one, as more Newsies had returned from their days exploits, the conversation had gone from work-orientated to just chatting among each other.
Davey seemed more at ease than Y/N had seen him... well, ever, if she was going to be honest. Since she had met him, Davey had been stressed out and nervous about the future of his family, the strike, the union and now his newly acquainted brothers. So it was nice to see him relaxing with the other sellers. Cracking jokes with Crutchie and teasing Race over his latest gambling loss.
Les, however, had not quite kept up. He had come over to Y/N almost the moment she had returned to the lodging house and sat down to join her friends and demanded her attention. The kid was inexplicably fond of her - Y/N suspected it had something to do with her teaching him to tie his laces, and agreeing not to tell the other boys he hadn't known how to do it up until then in case they teased him.
Davey had confided in her that Les' admiration more than likely actually stemmed from the strike itself. She had stuck by his side through the whole ordeal, taking a couple of blows on his behalf when the bulls had arrived and she had been desperate to get him as far away from the fighting as possible.
(Davey had also admitted, rather shyly, with flushed pink cheeks that he, too, had been touched by the attention shown to his younger brother. Grateful to her that she had been looking out for him. Y/N had wondered then if she was naive for wanting to read into his words, to try and convince herself that he returned her affections)
Les had grown sleepy quickly, though. And had passed out across Y/N's lap with the quiet murmurings of the Newsies to keep him company. Davey had met her eyes a couple of times across the room, since seeing his younger brother fast asleep on her lap. And there was an undeniable apology in his expression, which Y/N was quick to dismiss each time with a grin and shake of her head.
She didn't mind it at all.
(And no, that had nothing to do with the warm feeling in the pit of her stomach when she saw Davey looking over towards her and Les with such gentle affection)
The evening had, in short, been close to perfect.
Davey stood from where he had been resting on Crutchie's bed, leaning against the wall as he chatted idly with Race and Albert, and he stretched out his arms. Y/N could have sworn that she heard his back give a crack at the movement.
"I should probably get home - our folks will be worrying about us," Davey offered by way of explanation. There were nods and farewells called to him from around the room and Davey picked his way across the floor to reach Y/N and Les.
He offered her the shy smile she was used to seeing him wear and he reached up to ruffle his hair a little under his cap.
"Figure I should collect your limpet," he said, a teasing edge to his voice. "Sorry about him."
"Don't apologise - he's a sweet kid," Y/N paused before adding: "and you're a real good brother to him, Dave."
A pink hue sprinkled across the apples of Davey's cheeks, but Y/N forced herself to look away from it, gently shaking the kid on her lap.
Les groaned and swatted at her hand.
"Leave me alone," he grumbled. Y/N shared an amused glance with Davey, who crouched down.
"Come on - we've gotta get home, Les."
"I'm comfortable," he complained again, opening his eyes just enough to shoot his brother a glare. Y/N bit her lip to stop herself from laughing.
Davey caught the action though, rolling his eyes at her in exasperation.
"I can't imagine it's all that comfortable for Y/N, though. Come on, get up."
Les opened his eyes again, this time directed up at Y/N in the same puppy-dog expression she knew Jack had been training him in to sell his papers.
"Y/N" he whined. Y/N chuckled and pinched his arm lightly.
"What do you want me to do, kid? Do you want me to carry you home?" She joked. Les looked contemplative though, and then nodded.
"That would work," he agreed.
Y/N burst out laughing, and Davey sighed again, letting his head fall down onto the mattress beside his brother.
"I told mum and dad you were a heathen," he complained. "I said they should've just stuck with me and Sarah."
"This is why I like Y/N," Les huffed, aiming a kick at Davey. "She's nice to me."
"Alright, kid - come on, your parents will be worried," Y/N cut in, laughing quietly. She pushed him off of her lap and stood up. "How does a piggy back ride sound?"
Ten minutes later, the three of them were walking the route back to Davey's family home. Les had fallen back asleep, resting on Y/N's lap, and Davey hadn't stopped spewing apologies for his brother's actions.
"Dave - I mean it, you don't need to apologise," she said with a gentle laugh. "Manhatten's nice to walk through at this time of night, anyway." She shot a teasing look at him from the corner of her eye. "Besides, the company's not all too bad, either."
Davey went bright pink, mouth gaping open slightly as he processed her... rather forward words.
"I mean - I'd never complain at the chance to spend more time with you," he managed to get out, smiling awkwardly at her.
"Such a charmer, Jacobs."
"You started it!"
The two of them lapsed into quiet laughter for a moment. Just as the two of them turned the corner down into Davey's street, he spoke again.
"Well... would I be able to take you out some time? To make up for this?" He gestured at the sleeping kid. "Without my brother, and the other's, I mean. Since we... like spending time together, and all," he added awkwardly.
"You asking me on a date, Jacobs?"
"That.... depends on your answer?" Davey tried weakly and Y/N laughed.
"And if my answer's a yes?" She asked as they came to a stop outside of the Jacobs' front door. Davey stepped forwards to scoop Les into his arms instead.
"Then yeah - definitely a date," Davey confirmed, far more confidently.
Y/N offered a crooked grin and stepped up to press a kiss to his cheek, marvelling in the stunned expression the action left behind.
"Then I'll see you tomorrow, Dave."
(Can confirm, Les was 100% not asleep, just sick of Davey's pining and decided to take matters into his own hands)

Run Your Mouth (David Jacobs x Fem Brooklyn Newsie)
Tumblr media
Request: While David and Jack are in Brooklyn trying to convince Spot to join the strike, Davey sees a girl in the corner of his eye.
Davey’s POV
“So is this Spot Colon a big deal?”
“Just wait and see.”
It’s funny how fast a person’s life can change in a day. First I’m selling newspapers, the next I’m being taken to Brooklyn. I’ll admit I’m really anxious to be in such an unfamiliar atmosphere, especially with the tough Brooklyn newsies watching our every move.
“Where is he?” I whisper to Jack, trying to stick as close a possible. Meanwhile Boots keeps looking around with a laid-back smile.
“Be patient,” the cowboy mutters.
“Well if it ain’t Jack be nimble, Jack be quick.”
We both look up and literally spot the one I think is the Brooklyn leader named Spot Colon.
“See you moved up in the woild, Spot. Got a river view and everything,” Jack comments.
‘Spot’ hops down and I see he’s hold’n a cane. Him and Jack do tha spit handshake and grin at each odda.
“Is that Jack?” A distant voice asks. It’s a girl’s voice.
Just then, in the corner of my eye I see a tall figure step out from behind the crates, and my heart stops. If it weren’t for her voice, one might say she’s a boy from this distance. A few strands of blonde hair poke out from under her newsie cap. She’s wearing faded gray overalls and a messy, oversized blue shirt that’s left with two undone buttons, leaving part of her chest exposed. As the Brooklyn newsie steps closer, it only highlights her feminine charms even more. It’s the eyes. Her eyes. Those ocean blue eyes that I’m drowning in- Get a grip, David!
She twirls a walking stick as she struts forward to meet us, appearing to size me up. “Who’s the geek?”
“I, uh-” For once in my life I dunno what to say!
Lucy’s POV
Spot likes to keep things simple in Brooklyn. We’s the toughest there is, therefore there’s little threats. But that also means we don’t get too much action ‘round here. I thought the highlight-a the week was gonna be when Bucky threw Scab into the river, but I was proved wrong when Jack came by for a visit. I’s one-a Spot’s lookouts, so I’d overhoid earlier about ‘Hattan’s strike business. I just never believed they’d have the guts to come here and ask for help. Jack’s here, and he brought company. I recognized Boots immediately, but then see an unfamiliar face. A cute one at that. I know Spot will club me for think’n like a lovestruck dumb blonde, but just ‘cause I’s a Brooklyn newsie don’t mean my goilish instincts are shut off.
Now the guy keeps look’n at me, his piercing blue eyes analyzing me as if I’m a museum art piece.
“Who’s the geek?” I ask, both curious and as a flirt.
“I, uh-” the blue-eyed newsie stutters.
I can tell Spot already knows what game I’m playing ‘cause he keeps try’n to block me from get’n closer.
“Jack, tell the mouth he’s got no chance with Pickens. You know the rules.”
Cowboy looks back and forth between us, then accepts defeat as he pulls the ‘mouth’ away.
Now Spot turn to Boots. “How’s it hang’n?”
“Got some nice shooters for ya!”
Boots hands him a few smooth rocks. Spot then takes out a slingshot, loads it, and aims at a nearby bottle. “So Jackie boy, I’s been hear’n things from little boidies.” He shoots, caus’n the bottle ta shatter poifectly. “Things from Queens… Harlem. They been chirp’n in my ear, tell’n me Jackie’s boys are plann’n on a strike.”
“Well, we are,” the new guy says assurin’ly.
I’ll give him credit for spunk. Most folks don’t even got the cahonies to look at Spot, let alone talk back to him.
“Oh yeah? Yeah?” Spot gets up in his face, try’n to intimidate him. “Whis is this Jackie boy, some kind-a walk’n mouth?”
Jack looks out from under his cowboy hat. “Yeah, it’s a mouth with brains. And you’ll here what he’s gotta say.”
Spot considers this, then agrees by lean’n against the crates and wait’n for their explanation. “So Jack, are all the odda boroughs pitch’n in?”
“They is wait’n for what Spot Colon is do’n.”
Now the new guy jumps in. “They say that Spot Colon- you’re the key. That Spot Colon’s the most famous newsie in all of New York. And if you join, we’ll be unstoppable. You just gotta join!”
Spot seems to think it over, and I can tell it’s really got him think’n.
“You were right, Jack. Brains. But I got brains too. How do I know you got what it takes? How do I know you’s won’t go run’n the first time some goon comes at ya with a club?”
“‘Cause I’m tell’n ya, Spot.” Jack replies.
Spot sighs impatiently and begins to walk away towards me. “That ain’t good enough, Jackie boy. You gotta show me.”
That’s Brooklyn talk for “no,” which don’t seem to please Jack. He nods respectfully and gestures for the two boys to follow him out. Deep down, I’d be lying if I said I weren’t disappointed to see the mouth go. He must feel the same, because he keeps looking back at me and is hesitant to follow. So much that Jack has to grab his arm to lead him outta his trance.
“Sorry, Davey. Rules state that goils don’t get involved with business.”
Davey? Ah, so the geek has a name.
I saunter forward and go to stand next to Davey, give’n Spot a sassy look. “Who says this is business? I’m go’n for a walk, and you can’t say no.”
Just like that, the King ‘o Brooklyn is reduced to a speechless mess. “Wait- You can’t- You seriously- Him?”
I laugh at his scatterbrained speech and point to Davey. “Yes, him. Be back in an hour!”
Quickly, I grab Davey’s arm and pull him through the crowd-a Brooklyn newsies towards the bridge. Once we’s alone, I relax and set a leisurely stride. All the while Davey looks as if he’s seen a ghost.
“You ok?”
He nods slowly, still stare’n at me.
“Can ya still talk?”
Davey flashes a noivous smile and licks his lips. “Hehe, maybe. Depends if you’re gonna stop being too gorgeous to look at.”
His woids make me suspect a joke, but his face don’t say that. He ain’t kidding.
“You… think I’s gorgeous?” I tilt my head in consideration. “Yeah, just like every guy in Brooklyn. Look’n at me like a piece-a meat.”
This seems to erase all-a Davey’s worried nerves, because he’s got a different look on his face. One more determined, like a debate leader.
“I don’t think you are. Why would they think that?”
I scoff. “Everyone does! Like I’s just a dumb blonde who don’t know squat! Just anodda pretty face. No offense Davey, but I was hope’n you’d be a break from those guys.”
Davey halts in his tracks and grips my shoulders, and I have to resist my fight response to punch his adorable face.
“You’re not just a pretty face. I don’t know much about Brooklyn, but I do know that Spot Colon is a big deal. I admire how you’re confident enough to dominate over him, but don’t have an intense ego. If you’d like, I wouldn’t mind having an intellectual conversation with you instead of gushing about how you’re making my heart melt.”
He takes a deep breath, have’n just spilled his guts to me. This, in turn, has left me speechless. Never once has any newsie in Brooklyn been smart enough to carry on an educated conversation odda than what’s in the papes. Heck, some of ‘em can’t even read!
Davey must take my silence as rejection, because he’s get’n noivous again.
“Sorry if I upset you. I… have the tendency to talk too much.”
“I like that.”
His eyes go crazy, almost try’n to double think what I said. “Y-You like it? It’s not annoying?”
A smile grows on my face and I nod. “Go right ahead, Davey. Run your mouth. I don’t mind.”
Something gets triggered in Davey, because he immediately starts lecturing about social issues. Part of it I understand, but some is a bit too complicated.
“Wait, wait. How do you know all this?”
Davey gets a cute blush on his cheeks. “I used to be in school, before my father had an accident that took him out of work. Now I gotta sell papers to earn money.”
“Oh. I’m sorry to hear that. You got family, yeah?”
“Yeah. Do you?” Davey rethinks this and quickly adds: “I’m sorry, that’s a personal subject. We don’t have to talk about it.”
“No no, ‘s alright. It ain’t new to me. I never knew my folks. They threw me in an orphanage as soon as I could talk, and I’s been a newsie since I was five. So, you was say’n ‘bout the problem of over-achieving?”
Davey gets back on track and continues. “I believe that success should be celebrated but to an extent. We shouldn't let our praise go to politicians and business men's heads. After all, living a healthy and free life is its own reward. What's wrong is that our economy has made it appear that being rich and important is better than being content with the little things in life.”
“Ain’t that a fact,” I scoff. “They don’t know what real wealth is.”
“By the way, we never got a real introduction.” Davey stands up straight and holds out a hand to shake. “My real name is David. David Jacobs. I- I know we literally just met, but- Are you familiar with the story of Romeo and Juliet?”
The name washes over me. “No?”
Davey shakes his head and tries again. “There’s something called love at first sight. Maybe you'd know about that, Miss…? Gosh, I don’t even know your real name!” He chuckles. “Some romantic I must be. They call you Pickens, right?”
His innocent smile makes me soften up, bringing a hand over to grip his. “It’s Lucy. My real name’s Lucy, in case you wanted to know.”
“I- I did want to know. But I gotta ask- why me? You didn’t even know me, yet you’re so open to talking with me.”
“Because-a you, genius. You’s actually got brains in that pretty head-a yours, unlike most guys here who got cement for brains. And if at any time you’s ever feel like talk’n, come visit me. Or bedda yet, ya could ask me out?”
Davey stops dead in his tracks, blabbering on like a drunk squirrel. “Ask you- Like- Like a date?”
“No, like an interview. Of course a date, genius!” I laugh.
Davey still ain’t convinced. “But I’m me. I’m not like most guys-”
“All the more reason I’d luv to go on a date with you, David Jacobs.”
He laughs out loud and foist I think he’s make’n fun-a me, but then he gets a bewildered look on his face. “I was just thinking earlier about how fast a person’s life can change in a day. Now my life’s changed even more!” Davey smiles and gently takes my hand. “Thank you, Lucy! Thank you so much! I- I’ll be good to you, I promise. And you can choose the date location, of course.”
“Always a gentleman, I see.” Look’n into his kind eyes, I lean up and give a quick peck to his cheek. “Thanks, Davey.”
By now Jack and Boots have caught up, both give’n us funny looks.
“Hey, um, David. Spot instructed very clearly for us to tell you to send Pickens back. I suggest you do it before something intense happens.”
Davey nods in response, still dazed by my kiss, then turns to me to give me a quick handshake. “See you soon?”
“I’ll count the minutes, genius.”

“Y/N! We’ve missed you, where’ve you been?” Y/N groaned internally. They had seen the Delancey twins this morning, and the day before, and the day before that, and every single time they say the same thing. The two knew it annoyed them, so they took advantage of it. Y/N turned away from the direction they were walking in, holding up a newspaper and calling out a fake headline.
“No need to be so cold, ya know,” Oscar said. Y/N continued to ignore them, not looking back at the two as an older man exchanged a paper for a penny. Y/N thanked him as he walked away and he only grunted in return.
“Look at you go, selling those papes so quickly. We’re so proud of you.” One of the two put his hand on top of their head, shaking their hat around before taking it off and tossing it over to the other. Y/N sighed.
“Just give me back my damn hat, Delancey,” They said once they had turned around. Morris shrugged, spinning the hat with his finger.
“If ya want it back so bad, you’re gonna have to fight for it,” He said. The two brothers shared a laugh as Y/N tried to grab the hat, only for it to be tossed to the other.
“You heard him, Y/N. Can’t make any exceptions, even for you,” Oscar said. Y/N huffed, turning around and walking away. They didn’t need their hat to sell the paper, they’d be just fine without it. And they did. They sold two papers in the next twenty minutes, glad to see the twins hadn’t followed them. However, the second they felt the relief, an annoying voice came from down the road.
“Could you imagine walking away from a fight, Morris? I think that if someone does it says quite awful lot about them, what about you?”
“Oh, I completely agree. I think it means that they’re a wimp, and they know they can’t win.” Y/N turned to tell them to screw off, only for Oscar to pull the papers out from underneath their arm and throw them to the side. They tried to go after them, but the two brothers blocked their path. Right as they exchanged a sinister glance, someone else butted in.
“Delancey!” Jack called. The three looked over to see Jack storming over, David behind him with an obvious look of ‘I have to make sure he doesn’t kill anyone’. Further proving the theory of what the look meant, he grabbed Jack’s arm once they had got there and pulled him back slightly, not having the slightest trust in him. “Get the hell away from dem.”
“When will you learn to mind your own damn business, Kelly?”
“Once you two piss off.” Oscar scoffed, shaking his head. Morris rolled his eyes. He turned back to Y/N as Oscar started walking away.
“Times gonna come when he doesn’t get here in time, and trust me when I say that both of us are looking forward to it.” He shoved the hat to Y/N’s chest, taking a final chance to glare at Jack before catching up with Oscar. As Y/N put the hat back on, Jack turned to David.
  “No, Jack.”
“Yous saying those dicks don’t deserve it?”
  “I’m not-”
“Let’s not argue about this,” Y/N spoke up before anything could escalate. Of course, it wouldn’t escalate too badly, but Y/N didn’t feel like hearing the two bitter back and forth while trying to sell the rest of their papers. They bent down, picking up the papers the Delancey’s had thrown to the ground. They groaned once realizing that none of the papers hadn’t fallen into the puddle, meaning they couldn’t sell any of them. No one wanted wet papers.
“Dammit, Y/N, sorry we couldn’t get here any sooner,” Jack said as he and Davey helped pick up the soaking paper. Y/N shrugged.
“It’s whatever. There’s always tomorrow.” Of course, both Jack and David knew that it wasn’t whatever, considering the money Y/N just lost and the small bit of dignity, but they didn’t say anything. The three walked back to the lodge house, Jack and Davey having already sold all their papers, throwing the wet papers away along the way. They walked in to see a few others had already returned, including Crutchie, Race, Specs, and Romeo.
“You three have already sold all your papers?” Jack said, skeptical of all of them aside from Crutchie. Race placed a hand over his heart, feigning hurt.
“Course we did, Jack, what do yous think of us?”
“I don’t think you’d want to hear that answer,” Crutchie said, laughing at Jack’s nod to agree with his statement.
“Hey, Y/N, what is yous doing back so early? Thought you liked to go watch the fishes or something?” Specs asked.
“Yeah, Y/N, what’s up?” Romeo asked, not seeing the glare that Jack had sent Specs. Race, however, did.
“It was them Delancey’s again wasn’t it?” He said, standing up as he rolled up his sleeves. “Two need to learn a lesson.” David grabbed Race’s bicep as he walked by him.
“Go sit down.” Race groaned, turning around.
“This is why no one likes you, Davey,” Race said as he fell back into the chair.
“That ain’t true!” Crutchie said. “I like you, Davey, you’re a cool guy.”
“Ok, everyone shut up,” Y/N said, making sure not to look at Crutchie when she said it, considering it was directed towards everyone aside from him. “Yeah, I had a run-in with the Delancey's, wasn’t a big deal. Got out of it without a scratch, no need to make a big deal over it.”
“Y/N, the only reason you did was because Davey and I showed up at the right time.” Before Y/N could protest, David had to interrupt.
“He’s right, Y/N.” Y/N sent a glare toward David, who sent an apologetic look back.
“Hows about we teach you some tricks to help yous out when those pricks are around, might help you out a bit?” Specs suggested. Race lit up at the idea.
“Oh, please say yes, I’ve been dying for an excuse to beat Romeo’s ass after he stole my customers from me last week.”
  “I didn’t steal shit, you’re just a lousy newsie.”
  “Oh really? Y/N, watch this.”
“Shut your traps, both of yous,” Jack interrupted. He turned to Y/N. “That ain’t too bad of an idea, though, you wanna try it?” Y/N shrugged.
“Don’t got anything better to do.” The second after they said it, Race jumped onto Romeo, calling for Y/N to watch and see how it was done. Jack groaned, pulling Race back.
  “Dumbasses.”
Y/N had finished selling their papers for the day, walking back to the lodge house to meet with Crutchie for a game of War. As they walked, they got the sense that someone was following them, but decided it’d be better to just ignore it. So they did. Until someone grabbed them by their arm, pulling them into one of the many alleyways in Manhattan. Y/N quickly regained their balance to turn to see the Delancey brothers standing there, smirks on their faces.
“Think you’ve been avoiding us, haven’t you?” Morris said, stepping forward. Y/N rolled their eyes, going to push past the two. Right as they tried, a punch was given to their right cheek, leaving a stinging pain that Y/N could only assume was from the ring Oscar was wearing.
“You don’t get to leave after you’ve been so disrespectful. It’s time for you to pay up.”
“Look, I don’t want any trouble, ok? I just want to get back to the lodge house and go to sleep.”
“Should’ve thought about that before you changed your selling spot without us knowing.” Before Y/N could respond, the two stepped forward, swinging hits at them as they backed up. Once they hit a wall, fear struck them knowing they had nowhere else to go. Another punch landed on their stomach as well as their jaw. They ducked down as the next one was sent their way, kicking Oscar in the stomach causing him to fall back. Morris tried to take the chance to grab Y/N’s leg, but Y/N lowered it quickly enough and pushed him away. Seeing as both of them were now on the ground, Y/N went to run away before they could get up. However, Oscar grabbed their foot, causing them to fall to the ground, scraping their knees and elbows. They flipped over onto their back, kicking back at Oscar as he tried to grab them again. They threw a punch at Morris, who hadn’t been expecting it, and he stumbled back. Getting back on their feet, Y/N turned and sprinted the next few blocks. They got to the lodge house, where Jack was outside. Jack saw them coming and his expression changed, turning away from David and coming over.
“Hey, hey, what happened?” He said, putting his hands on their biceps. Y/N was breathing heavily, shaking their head. “Y/N, are you alright?” Y/N nodded, and it sounded as though they were crying. “Y/N, talk to us, come on.” Y/N looked up, showing the cuts on their face, along with a smile.
“You should’ve been there!” Y/N exclaimed. Jack looked back at David, confused. “They had cornered me in an alley but I fought back! I kicked them and hit them and got away!”
“Are you talking about the Delancey’s?” David asked. Y/N nodded, jumping slightly at their excitement.
“You should’ve seen their faces! They were so confused, they didn’t know what hit ‘em!” Jack chuckled.
“Hell yeah, Y/N, wish I could see them now,” Jack said, smiling down at them.
“Yeah, but are you ok, Y/N? You’re bleeding,” David said, reaching up to assess the cut on their cheek. Y/N rolled their eyes, pushing his hand away.
“I’m fine, Davey, never been better!”
“How about we goes inside and tell everyone about how you beat their asses?” Jack said. Y/N nodded.
“Hell yeah!” As Jack and Y/N turned and ran inside, David rolled his eyes, laughing himself before following behind them.

‘I love that book, and I love you.’
A Davey x reader fic.
a/n: I am alive.
My head hurts, and all I can think about is how much I want to kick Albert and Race for keeping me up with their stupid issues.
‘YOUS SAID MY NOSE WAS FUNNY.” Race squawked.
“WELL YOU SAID I WAS BUILT LIKE A GOOSE.” Albert protested.
With being the only girl when Katherine wasn’t around, that led the responsibility to go to me. The only logical one in the house. Well besides Davey. Ah… Davey…
It’s so secret I have a few special feelings for Davey. We both read challenging books, are logical, and have the best style out of the group. I’m just a little more confident and outgoing than him.  I’ve tried openly flirting with him, but he never reciprocates it. At this point I’ve given up, even though my hearts saying “KEEP GOING.”. But that’s a story for another time, right now I got to focus on-
“WOULD YOU TWO QUIET DOWN.” Davey storms in. Speak of the devil.
Race and Albert quickly close their mouths and stand up straight. Their eyes wide and their hands clasped behind their back. I looked up to find Davey already in his sleep clothes, even though it’s only 9pm. He’s such a grandpa.
“What is going on here?? Y/n? Hey.. what are you up for? Did they keep you up?? Apologize. Both of you.” He said before I could even greet him.
“We’s sorry y/n…” Race spoke first.
“Yea.. REALLY sorry.” Albert emphasized.
“Whatever this is, it can wait until the morning. Upstairs, the both of you. I want not an another word.” Davey stated while sitting down next to me. His knee brush against mine and I couldn’t help but let a little redness form on my face. I look up to find Davey already looking at me.
“I’m really sorry about them. I know you’ve had a long day.” Davey spoke softly and, wait a minute. How’d he know?
“How do you know I’ve had a long day?” I asked suddenly interested in the assumption Davey had made.
“Your book. You always read that one when you have a headache.” He said matter a factly as he scooted closer to me.
“How’d you know that…” I started.
“Because I love that book, and I love you.” He said nonchalantly.
He took a moment to realize what he had said. By the time he looked back I was already staring at him as if he’d grown two heads.
“I mean… I do. I do love you.” He said shyly.
“But Davey you never-“
“I KNOW I DIDN’T. I was just scared.” He admitted.
“Scared?” I was confused. I’m scary?
“No it’s not you, it’s just. I was never one to get the ladies. I thought you were just messing with me. “ he shifted in his seat.
“Davey…” I brought my hand to his face. “I love you too.”
He smiled at me like I hung the stars, and I’m sure my face said the same. From the late night discussions of Jane Austen, to laughing at Spot and Jack fighting. I wasn’t the only one who felt butterflies in my stomach
Now he was here. But all I could say was…
“You want to finish it with me?” I gestured to the book.
“I’d love nothing more.” He said pulling me in his arms.
“I. DONT. LOOK. LIKE. A. GOOSE.”
We collectively sigh.

Nervous
Tumblr media
Pairing: Davey Jacobs x Reader
Characters: Reader, Jack Kelly, Davey Jacobs
Warning: Jack is a little shit, everyone (secretly) ships the two of you together
Word Count: 948
*Set in modern times and the Newsies live together
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“He always gets nervous talking to pretty girls,” Jack says, wrapping an arm around Davey’s shoulders.
You nod, “uh huh.”
“What?”
You glance between the two, seeing a nervous and flushed cheek Davey and overly confidant Jack makes you believe the latter but, you also hope it’s not true because you want to have a conversation with Davey. You raise a brow, “do you always need to speak for him?”
Jack shakes his head, “no, no. He’s all brains, believe me.”
“Okay,” you slowly say. “I’ll believe it when I see it.”
“Okay,” Jack nods.
“Okay.”
“Why did this all of a sudden turn into a war?” Albert asks out loud.
The other newsies shush him, far too engrossed with this good old “Texan standoff” stare down.
“You don’t need to be so rude,” Albert adds, slightly hurt. He asked a perfectly fine and reasonable question.
“Bert, buddy, shut up before yous get a Brooklyn beat down,” Spot chimes in, looking his friend in the eyes.
Albert looks away, mumbling, “I told you not to call me Burt.”
“How about this?” Jack adds, diverting yours and Davey’s attention away from the two. “You and my man, Davey here,” he pats Davey’s shoulder. “Go out and I’m sure he’ll tell you all about his ideas… at some point.”
Davey’s shoulders sag, not feeling very confident about this.
You tilt your head, “are you asking me out on a date on his behalf?”
Jack shrugs, “I guess I am. What do you say?”
You squint at Jack, pursing your lips, slightly thinking of beating the overly confident Jack in your head.
Why did he, of all people, have to find out about your crush on his friend?
You glance over at the shy and nervous boy standing before you.
It’s clear to see how uncomfortable he is with this, whether it be his friend talking for him or what, you don’t know.
“As long as he doesn’t need his interpreter.”
Davey ever so lightly glances up at you.
“Consider it done.”
“Okay,” you say with a smile.
“Okay,” Davey repeats with a smile but, not exactly the same one as you; his is a little more of a mix of emotions, more so, nervousness and excitement.
-
“Alright, you two crazy kids go out and have fun,” Jack wraps an arm around your shoulder, dragging you and Davey towards the front door and basically kicking you two out (temporarily of course).
“Wait- Jack- we don’t have our keys,” you spit out as fast as you can but, the door closes.
You knock once… twice… “Jack, we need at least one set of keys. The store is too far for us to walk.”
The door opens and a pair of keys are thrown at you, you frantically try to catch the keys; you take a step back and almost fall, luckily you have Davey with you.
He catches you, helping you straighten yourself out so you can stand up.
Once you realize how close the two of you were, yours and Davey’s cheeks turn as red a tomato.
You quickly step away from him, gulping, “we should go. You know how they get when they’re hungry.”
The corners of his mouth twitch slightly, “yeah. Whose keys did he throw to you?”
“Oh, uhh,” you check the key. “I think it’s yours?” You hold up the car keys so he can see.
“Of course, he did,” he mutters.
“What was that?”
“Nothing, let’s go.”
-
The drive to the store wasn’t so bad… or at least, not as awkward as you had originally thought it would be, once you found a topic the both of you could talk about.
“You can’t honestly think that Jack was right? Do you?” You ask, not wanting to give your friend a lot of credit when he’s proven to be a dumbass a lot of the time. You turn the corner, walking down the snack isle first with Davey following behind you.
“I mean- not- kind of- I don’t want to not give him credit when it was his idea, you know.”
You smile to yourself, finding him to be even cuter than before.
He walks beside you and finds you smiling. “Why are you smiling like that?”
You shrug, “no reason. I do see where you’re coming from.”
And you both continue talking about whatever interests the two of you, learning new things about each other, and whatnot.
-
After getting everything you two needed and paying, you’re on your way back to the newsie house.
It’s silent, all you hear are the sounds of other cars driving by; a honk here and there, the normal things you hear when you’re on the road.
This isn’t one of those awkward silences where no one’s what to talk about and it’s sort of weird but, it’s not. It’s comforting to know that you and Davey can talk about whatever and get to know each other.
'Guess Jack was right. Nope, don’t like that.’
- “You two have fun?” Jack asks, a smirk makes it’s way onto his lips. He leans onto the counter with his arms crossed.
You open the pantry, putting away the few canned items you bought and any other miscellaneous snacks you found. “I’m putting the groceries away.”
“You can multi-task.”
You groan, “if I throw this can at you, will you go away?”
“Why mess up this pretty face?”
“Someone’s cocky.”
“Someone’s avoiding the question.”
“I… didn’t find it as awkward as I thought it was going to be.”
“So, you liked going out shopping with my boy Davey?”
“Go away.” He chuckles, “you did. Someone had a good time with their crush.”
“Shut up!”
“Never.”

I had an idea for a Davey x reader (could interpret as either livesies or UKsies Davey) with the prompt "Wh- so you did remember my birthday!" || "Of course I did. How could I ever forget?"
maybe where they are a classmate of his (could already be in a relationship or platonic whatever you want to do) from before he had to drop out of school to be a newsie, and they surprise him at the lodging house for his birthday and Davey introduces them to the boys?
I love your writing so much keep up the amazing work🤩
omg I need more davey fics in my life I can't lie - I loveeee him
Fluff 21: "Wh- so you did remember my birthday!" || "Of course I did. How could I ever forget?"
Blurb requests still open!
Tumblr media
Y/N had to admit, it was more than a little terrifying to walk into the lodging house known for homing the newsboys of Manhatten to be immediately scrutinised by the eyes of multiple teenage boys.
Y/N shifted awkwardly from foot-to-foot, holding the wrapped package in front of her. She caught the eye of a couple of newspaper girls standing at the back of the room, chatting.
"Hey - you looking for someone?" Asked a girl, walking over with a smile, her boots causing her footsteps to sound loud even in the crowded room.
"Uh - David? David Jacobs? He said I'd be able to find him here?" Y/N said awkwardly.
"Oh my god! You're Davey's girl!" Another, shorter, girl exclaimed, bounding over excitedly.
"Davey's girl? She's here?" A boy sitting nearby asked. His blond hair was covered with a newsboy hat, a cigar hanging from his lips and he was holding a hand of cards playing poker with a couple of the other guys, all of whom perked up at his loud voice.
"No chance that's Davey's girl!" A boy with bright red hair denied, shaking his head with a scoff.
"Hey - Romeo, didn't you try and sell her a pape yesterday?" Another one of the boys playing poker questioned, nudging a smaller boy, who was laying on the ground, looking as though he was caught up in some kind of daydream.
"Is there a girl in New York who hasn't been rejected by Romeo?" Drily questioned a boy in glasses, earning laughter from the congregated boys.
"I take it this is the right place?" Y/N asked a little awkwardly.
"Yeah - he, Les and Jack just went upstairs to split their earnings," a blond boy said, shooting her a sweet smile. "Jojo will go let them know you're here - but you're welcome to join us in the meantime."
"Oh, I'll go get them, will I?" The boy next to him questioned, rolling his eyes.
The first boy shot Y/N another charming smile, before picking up a crutch from beside him that Y/N hadn't noticed before, and using it to strike Jojo across the knees.
The newsie let out a yelp of pain and jumped to his feet, glaring at his friend, who just gave an innocent shrug of his shoulders.
"The hell's going on here?"
"Y/N!"
Relief washed over her at the familiar voice coming from the top of their stairs.
"Hey, Dave," she said with a smile.
Her boyfriend pushed past his brother and friend who stood on their steps, rushing over to wrap her in a hug.
"What're you doing here?" David asked.
"Well - happy birthday," she said, pulling out of the embrace to hand over his gift. "And I also wanted to meet your friends," she added in a quieter, more embarrassed tone.
"How's that worked out for you?" David teased, sharing a knowing grin with her. He ducked down to press a kiss to her lips, raising a cheerful 'whoop' from the boys surrounding them. When they pulled away, Y/N buried her face into Davids chest. "But you - so you did remember my birthday?"
"Of course I did. How could I ever forget just because you weren't in school," Y/N said with a laugh.
Davey ducked down to kiss her again, earning yet more jeers.
"I love you," he whispered. "And that's why I'm going to say that we should go get dinner somewhere away from my friends."

Chag Sameach! (Happy Holiday!) (Davey Jacobs x OC) *Holiday Special* 🕯️
Tumblr media
Summary: Davey asks his girlfriend to spend Hanukkah with him, but she doesn’t know what to expect. (Takes place a year after the strike. I do not take credit for this knowledge of Hanukkah, and would like to acknowledge the History Channel for the fascinating history about this wonderful holiday!)
“Davey, are you sure it’s ok?” I ask for what seems like the 50 millionth time.
“Like I said before, yes!” The dark-haired newsie rubs his forehead. “Helen, you’re always welcome at our house. You know that.”
I give a heavy sigh as we trudge through the thickening snow. “I know, but this is Hanukkah! I’m not Jewish, I should go home. This is your time with your family, I don’t wanna get in the way.”
But Davey ignores me and keeps dragging me closer to his parents’ apartment. “Yeah, this is Hanukkah. A time to spend with family," he pauses and gives me a sincere look. “And friends. You’re practically family to us, Helen. You will never be in the way. Now come on! Everyone’s waiting!”
I’ve known David Jacobs for nearly a whole year ever since we ran into each other. Literally, he was rushing to catch up with the odda newsies and we both crashed! Since then we’ve become very close, and been seeing each other for the past month. The Jacobs basically adopted me! Davey is everything that makes up for what I’m not, such as being organized. We both love books, but he likes academic works while I prefer poetry. Davey’s mentioned Hanukkah to me before, but this year he really wants me to celebrate with him.
By now we’re at the doorstep and Davey all but pushes me inside as if he’s afraid I might disappear. Inside, all the Jacobs are buzzing around with friendly smiles, and a new delicious aroma fills the air.
“God Davey, what is that?” I take a deep breath.
“Those would be latkes!” Sarah announces as she hurries over with a tray of what looks like pancakes. “That’s Yiddish for potato pancakes. We also have cheese blintzes! Go on, try some!”
I thank her and select a tasty-looking latke, and when I bite into it it’s as if I’ve been deep fried in happiness.
“These are fantastic! Davey, you didn’t tell me Hanukkah food was so good!”
He chuckles and removes his newsie cap to place it on the rack. “It’s customary in some Jewish households to eat dairy foods in memory of Judith, who tempted General Holofernes with dairy foods and then lured him to his death to save the Jewish nation,” he explains.
“Is that Helen?” I hear someone shout from the odda room. In a blinding flash, Les races in and nearly topples me over in a tight hug. “You came! Davey promised you’d be here! This is gonna be the best Hanukkah ever!”
At the mention of this, flustered Davey walks off to join his father in the living room while Sarah drags Les away to the kitchen. “Come on, Les. Leave the two alone. You can help me with the sufganiyot!”
I decide to follow Davey and get a warm welcome from his father.
“Helen! Chag sameach, happy holiday! So glad you could make it!” The kind man smiles.
He walks off to help the others and give Davey and me some privacy, so I go sit down next to him by the window, which holds a decorative candle display.
“Is this the menorah you keep telling me about?”
He tries to rub the blush from his cheeks and nods. “Yeah. On each of the holiday’s eight nights, another candle is added to the menorah after sundown. The center candle, called the shamash, is used to light the others. Families pass menorahs from generation to generation.”
I take a moment to stare in awe at the humble but still magical menorah. “Wow, Davey…. It’s so special how you’ve all got these wonderful traditions. I wish my family had a special tradition for Christmas.”
His brow furrows in confusion. “You still have Christmas trees.”
I shake my head. “Only because my family’s German. They’ve only become popular thanks to Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It’s not the same. You guys have traditions that have been passed for centuries. Christmas trees have nothing to do with the birth of Jesus, or any other religious miracle.”
I expect Davey to agree and start questioning my odd Christian traditions, but instead he wraps an arm around me, pulls me closer, and rests his chin on top of my head.
“But you decorate your tree so well, ziskeit.”
His deep, kind voice makes me let out a calm breath. “Thanks, Davey. Aw, you remember how much I luv that Yiddish pet name.”
Davey smiles and presses a kiss to my temple. “I’m so glad to finally spend Hanukkah with you.”
“I forget, why isn’t it on the same date as last year?” I ask.
“Hanukkah, which means ‘dedication’ in Hebrew, begins on the 25th of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar and usually falls in November or December. The Hebrew calendar is timed according to the moon. Since this year is 1900, Hanukkah will last from Sunday, December 16, and end on Monday, December 24. Which means…” He pecks my cheek. “I can spend Christmas with you!”
“Davey! Have you told her about dreidels?” Les rushes back in from the kitchen carrying what looks like a small wooden top. “Another tradition we have Hanukkah is playing games,” he says excitedly as he spins the wooden top on the floor. “This is called a dreidel.”
“And…” Mrs. Jacobs enters the room carrying a blue parcel, followed by the rest of the family. “Like Christmas, Hanukkah represents a time to celebrate with friends.” She approaches me and hands me the package. “Happy Hanukkah, Helen!”
Immediately, I stand up and back away from the gathering Jacobs family.
“But- but I-”
“But nothing,” Mrs. Jacobs cuts me off. “We want you here to celebrate, because you’ve been so kind to our dear David.”
Davey waves off his mother’s gushing and takes my hand. “You know we won’t stop pestering until you open it. Happy Hanukkah, ziskeit!”
I gently lift open the top, and gasp when it reveals a pile of gold coins. The sight of the money leaves my mouth gaping, and when the Jacobs see my reaction they all laugh.
“It’s not real gold, Helen,” Mr. Jacobs explains. “The traditional gift for Hanukkah is gelt, which is Yiddish for ‘money.’ They’re wrapped chocolate coins that can be used when playing dreidel. According to legend, the coins we give on Hanukkah reflect similar coins that were minted to celebrate the victory of the Maccabee soldiers over the ancient Greeks.”
Thank goodness Davey noticed my confusion. “Maybe we should tell the full Hanukkah story to Helen.”
Les’ jaw drops. “You don’t know?”
“Les!” Sarah scolds as she slaps his shoulder. “Not everyone knows about Hanukkah.”
My sheepish smile says enough. “Actually, I’ve never read through the whole Bible. My family isn’t as religious, so we don’t have too many traditions.”
Davey takes my hand and gestures for me to sit with him on the couch. “Then you can be part of ours, ziskeit. To start off, Hanukkah commemorates when Jews rose up against their Greek-Syrian oppressors in the Maccabean Revolt. When the Jews had driven the Syrians out of Jerusalem, they rebuilt its altar and lit its menorah. The seven branches represented knowledge and creation and were meant to be kept burning every night.”
Mr. Jacobs tells the next part. “The Talmud, one of our primary sources of Jewish law, says that the Jews who took part in the rededication of the Second Temple witnessed what they believed to be a miracle. Even though there was only enough olive oil to keep the menorah’s candles burning for a single day, the flames continued flickering for eight nights. This is why Hanukkah is also called the Festival of Lights.”
Davey pulls me closer and, being surrounded by the cheery atmosphere and warm glow of the fire, the Jacobs’ acceptance of me into this special holiday makes my heart swell.
“Thank you, everyone. This means so much… I’m so lucky to have met you!” I can't stop smiling!
“You are always welcome to join us, Helen.” Mrs. Jacobs gives me a tight hug. “Now, let’s eat!”
We all gather around the table, and the scrumptious meal of brisket, latkes, kugel, and sufganiyot leaves me stuffed to the gills. After I finally get the hang of how to play dreidel, Davey leads me back to the menorah.
“So… what do you think?” He asks, slightly nervous.
“Davey, what do I think? This is wonderful!” I wrap my arms around him and his cute blush makes me fall in luv with him all over again. “This is so nice of all of you, thank you so much for inviting me!”
Davey lets out a relieved sigh. “If you like that, you’ll luv it more when the menorah’s lit up.”
My eyes widen. “Oh, I can’t wait! I bet it looks almost magical!”
“It absolutely does.” Davey leans in for a tender kiss. “Chag Chanukah Sameach, ziskeit. Happy Hanukkah.”

Chapter 4: That’s Rich
Tumblr media
“Kelly! Eaton! Just wait until I get you back in the refuge!” Snyder yelled, luckily losing sight of the four newsies after they slipped into the theater.
“Slow down. I think we lost ‘em.” Jack panted and leaned against the railing of the catwalk.
“Someone wanna tell me why I’m running? I got no one chasing me! Who was that guy?” Davey asked, clearly confused and shocked by what just happened.
“That was Snyder the Spider.”
“A real sweetie,” Laces added sarcastically, rolling her eyes.
“He runs a jail for underage kids called The Refuge. The more kids he locks up, the more city pays him. Problem is, all the money goes straight into his own pocket. Do yourself a favor and stay clear of him and The Refuge.”
Davey was about to ask something before a woman interrupted.
“Hey, you up there, shoo! No kids allowed in the theater!”
Jack and Laces leaned over the railing so the woman could see their cheeky grins. “Not even us, Miss Medda?”
“Jack Kelly, man of mystery. And Laces, my little dancer. Get yourselves down here and give me a hug!” Medda demanded.
The two smiled at each other before racing down the stairs and letting Medda wrap them in a hug.
“Where have you been keeping yourselves, kids?”
“Never far from you, Miss Medda.” Jack winked as Miss Medda lightly hit his shoulder.
Laces rolled her eyes at Jack before turning back to Davey and Les. “Boys, may I present Miss Medda Larkin: the greatest star on the bowery today. She also owns the joint.”
“The only thing I own is the mortgage.” Medda smiled warmly at the two newcomers. “Pleasure gents.”
“A pleasure,” Davey replied, bowing slightly. His eyes drifted to Les who was gawking at something behind him. With a sigh, Davey smacked his arm. “What is wrong with you?”
Les continued to stare. “Are you blind? She’s got no clothes on!”
Confused, Davey turned to see that Les was staring at the bowery beauties. “That’s her costume,” he explained with an exasperated sigh.
“But I can see her legs!”
“Well, step outta his way so’s he can get a better look!” Medda demanded. “Theater’s not only entertaining. It’s educational.”
The bowery beauties flashed the boys sultry smiles and blew them kisses, causing Les’ smile to grow.
“You got the picture, kid?” Medda questioned, earning a hefty nod from Les.
“Miss Medda, wese got a little situation outside. Is it okay if Laces and I hide out here a while?” Jack interrupted.
Medda nodded somberly. “Where better to escape than the theater? Is Snyder after you two again?”
With a frown, Laces nudged the floor with the toe of her boot. “When is he not?”
“Hey, Jack, did you really escape jail on the back of Teddy Roosevelt’s carriage?” Les asked excitedly.
Davey nudged his younger brother. “C’mon, what would the governor be doing at a juvenile jail?”
“It just so happened he was running for office and he wanted to show he cared about orphans and such,” Jack explained getting in Davey’s face. “So while he got his mug in the papers, I got my butt in the backseat and off we rode together.”
Les was in complete awe of Jack’s story. “You really know the governor?”
Laughing, Medda shook her head. “He don’t but I do! Say, Jack, when you’ve got time, I want you to paint me another one of these backdrops! This last one you did is a doozy. Folks love it. And things have been going so well that I can actually pay.”
“I couldn’t take your money, Miss Medda,” Jack insisted.
“You pictured that?” Les asked, staring at the intricately painted forest landscape.
Laces nodded and nudged her friend. “He is quite the artist.”
“Take it easy,” Jack whined, putting his hands up. “It’s a bunch of trees!”
“You’re really good,” Davey commented.
“This boy’s got a natural aptitude,” Medda added with a smile.
Les stared at Jack in awe. “Geez! I ain’t never knew no one with an aptitude!”
“And now you know two. Little miss Laces here is one of the finest dancers to ever be seen,” Medda bragged. “You need to come back and perform for me.”
“I couldn’t. I ain’t much of a dancer no more,” Laces argued, flush creeping up the back of her neck. “I don’t think my old shoes even fit now.”
“We’d find you new shoes. And the girls and I miss seeing you up on the stage. Just think of how good you’d look in front of one of Jack’s gorgeous backdrops!”
Jack and Laces were about to protest again but Medda’s stage manager ran up to the group, effectively ending the conversation. “Miss Medda! You’re on!” He cried.
“I am? How’m I doin’?” Medda joked, striking a pose.
When her stage manager didn’t laugh, she turned to the group of newsies who immediately started to laugh awkwardly.
“Kids, lock the door and stay all night. You’re with Medda now!”
The spotlight immediately shone on Medda as she stepped out onto the stage and was met with a hefty round of applause.
Laces grabbed Davey’s arm and dragged him along towards the curtain so they could get a good view of the performance.
“I'm doing alright for myself, folks.
I'm healthy, I'm wealthy, I'm wise.
My investments and such
have all gone up so much.
Seems whatever I touch
starts to rise!
I've got men, I've got money, and yet
the thing I want most, I can't get!
Uh-huh, that feels good.
I like that.
Now listen here!
I live in a mansion on Long Island sound.
I pulled up a weed, they found oil in the ground.
But you telling me you don't want me around?
Now, honey, that's rich!
Some guys give me ermine, chinchilla, and mink,
and some give me diamonds as big as a sink,
but you wouldn't give me so much as a wink?
Now, baby, that's rich!
I get brandy from Andy and candy from Scott.
Oh, and Frank and Eduardo chipped in for a yacht.
I get stares from the fellas and prayers from the pope,
but I ran out my luck getting stuck on some dope!
Hey, baby, I was just talking about you!
Now listen, sport,
this life's too short
to waste it on you.
It may be rough
but soon enough,
I'll learn to make do with
the mansion, the oil well, the diamonds, the yacht,
with Andy, Eduardo, the pontiff, and Scott!
And Frank, ooh!
And my bank!
So spill no tears for me
'cause there's one thing you ain't
that I'll always be
and honey, yeah, that's right
That's rich!
That's rich!
That's rich!
That's rich!”
Medda ended her song with a flourishing pose as the audience erupted into cheers, the four newsies being the loudest.
“Now gents, a warm welcome for our bowery beauties!” Medda took a final bow before heading off stage.
“Wow. She’s really good,” Davey muttered, still in awe of the performance he had just witnessed. “So how do you know her?”
Laces shrugged. “She was a friend of Jack’s parents. He brought me and Crutchie here a lot when we first started out as newsies.”
“She said you danced.”
With a grimace, Laces shrugged again. “I do. I did. She and the other girls taught me after I was done sellin’. Made me remember home. My mom adored ballet.”
“Maybe you can show me how to dance one day,” Davey joked.
“Oh yeah? Think you’d be up for it?” Laces snuck a glance at Jack who was currently talking up the same woman he had tried his luck with earlier that day in a boxseat. There was plenty of time to teach him something simple. “C’mon, Davey baby.”
“What?”
“Wese is goin’ dancin’.” Without another word, Laces grabbed his arm and led him through the theater to a quiet backroom.
Davey shook his head and took a few steps back towards the door. “I was joking!”
“Well, I ain’t. We’ll do something slow. It’ll be easy,” Laces insisted, grabbing one of his hands with her own. “Other hand on my waist.”
“What?” Davey asked, color staining his face.
“Youse is smart. Figure it out.”
Reluctantly, Davey settled his right hand on Laces’ waist.
“Atta’ boy.” Laces smiled and put her left hand on his shoulder. “Now you just make a box with your feet.”
“You make it sound so simple. Look, this isn’t a good idea.”
“Don’t back out on me now,” Laces ordered before slowly demonstrating the steps. “Now you try it.”
Davey tried to copy her movements, taking rigids steps to the back, side, and front. The look of concentration on his face made Laces laugh.
“Those are the right steps but you need to loosen up. Dancin’ is supposed to be fun.”
“It would be easier with music,” Davey mused.
“Picky,” Laces commented. After a few seconds of deliberating, she began to sing a soft melody.
“We are young, we are gold,
trying things we didn't know.
Looking at the sky,
see it come alive”
Davey tried his best to step in time with the song. He tightened his grip on her waist as he attempted to get everything right.
Laces sighed and moved her hand on his shoulder into the hair at the nape of his neck. She gave it a light tug, causing Davey’s eyes to snap up to hers. “Look at me, not at your shoes. The steps don’t need to be perfect. They just need to be.
“All our fears became our hopes.
Climbed out every locked window,
we rode a lion's mane
and fell upon the rain.
We can reach the constellations.
Trust me, all our dreams are breaking out.”
Taking a breath, Davey kept his eyes on Laces’. The more they repeated the steps, the more confidence he gained. As they danced, a small smile appeared on his face.
“No, we're never gonna turn to dust.
Yeah, all we really need is us.
Don't be scared to close your eyes.
No, we're never gonna die.
We'll be the stars, oh.
No, we're never gonna step too far.
Yeah, we're holding on to who we are.
When it's time to close your eyes,
they will see us in the sky.
We'll be the stars.
We'll be the stars.
We'll be the stars.”
Laces smiled as she watched Davey actually enjoy himself. Once he let go of the fear, he actually made a good dance partner.
“Let me in,
hold me close,
fill my heart with simple notes
so when it's hard to see,
they are there reminding me.
Take my breath and hold me high
so I can feel the city lights
glowing under me.
It's in our reach, we're breaking out.
No, we're never gonna turn to dust.
Davey laughed and gently pushed on her waist. She got the hint and spun underneath his arm.
“Getting cocky are we?” Laces teased when she was once again chest to chest with him, this time pressed closer to him than she was before.
“Maybe a little,” he admitted.
“We can reach the constellations.
Trust me, all our dreams are breaking out.
No, we're never gonna turn to dust.
All we really need is us.
We'll be the stars, oh.
No, we're never gonna step too far.
Yeah, we're holding on to who we are.
When it's time to close your eyes,
they will see us in the sky.
We'll be the stars.
We'll be the stars.
We'll be the stars.
We'll be the stars.
Woah, we'll be the stars.”
Laces smiled up at Davey once she finished singing. “See? That wasn’t so bad.”
“That was fun,” Davey admitted.
“We should do it again sometime.”
“I like that idea,” he mused. “You’re a good teacher, Laces.”
“Can I tell you something?”
Davey nodded.
“My name ain’t Laces.”
He faked a gasp. “I never would have guessed.”
“Shut up,” she mumbled, lightly hitting his chest with the back of her hand.
“So what’s your real name?”
“Juliet Eaton.”
A faint smile graced Davey’s lips. “Well, Juliet Eaton, I’m David Jacobs.”
“I knew that, ya idiot.” Laces went to hit his chest again, but he caught her hand before she could, causing pink to dust her cheeks for once. “Youse is the one that didn’t know mine.”
“So, Juliet as in…Romeo and Juliet?”
“I’d prefer David and Juliet,” she confessed, voice barely above a whisper.
For once, the wordy boy was left speechless. It took him a second before he managed to whisper, “I’ve never heard of that one.”
“Maybe we’ll have to write it then.”
“Maybe we will.”
The two stood for several minutes, just staring at each other until Laces gently squeezed Davey’s hand. “We should go find Jack and Les. You don’t wanna keep your folks waitin’ any longer.”
Making their way back towards the stage, they found their friends watching the current performance.
Davey tapped Les’s shoulder. “C’mon. Ma will be worried if we’re out too much longer.”
“We should get goin’ too, Jackie,” Laces added.
With reluctance, the two got up and walked out of the theater. As they walked in the direction of the lodging house and the Jacobs’ apartment, Laces kept a hold of Davey’s arm—not that he minded. The four walked in comfortable silence while Davey and Laces shared quick glances and secret smiles. It was the perfect moment.
But all good things must come to an end and they had to go in two different directions.
“We’ll see you tomorrow,” Davey said before they went their separate ways. “Carrying the banner.”
“Carrying the banner,” Jack and Laces repeated. They waved as the two brothers made their way down the street.
“So, where’d you and Dave go after Medda sang?”
Laces crossed her arms across her chest as a wistful smile crossed her face. “Dancin’.”

Okay I had an idea for a Spot Conlon x reader!!
Passing out outside his door after getting soaked, Spot finding the reader and taking them inside his room to take care of her.
She/They pronouns of you don’t mind!!
Spot Conlon was anything if not intelligent. He had risen through Brooklyn not only on account of his strength, but his smarts. He had his smarts with him when he became the King of Brooklyn. He had his smarts with him when he upped his paper buying- buying and selling a hundred and fifty papes instead of only one hundred. He had his smarts with him when he beat up the Delancey brothers for harassing one of his newsies.
However, he may not have had his smarts with him when he agreed to join Jack Kelly’s strike and he definitely didn’t have his smarts with him when he carried in an unconscious girl that appeared on the Lodging House doorstep.
“Spot?” Knicks ran up to him. “We have a situation- wait. You have something bigger going on.” Knicks noticed the girl in Spot’s arms. “Who’s that?”
“I don’t know.” Spot pushed past Knicks and the small crowd of newsies that had begun to form.
“What are you doing? How’d they’d get here? Do you know where Vinny’s hat is?” Knicks started questioning Spot.
Spot groaned at the boy’s questions and started towards the stairs. “I’m bringing her up to my room to take care of her. I don’t know. I found her on the doorstep. As you can see, she’s beaten up pretty badly. And no, I haven’t seen Vinny’s hat.”
Spot was right. The girl in his arms had been soaked and looked pretty rough. She had a black eye that was a nasty black, purple, and blue. On the other side of their face, another bruise was creeping up their cheekbone. Her lip was split and had a smattering of other cuts and blemishes on their face.
Before Knicks could ask anymore questions, Spot quickly sidestepped him and hurried to his room.
Spot set the teenager down and before exiting the room. He wanted to grab some things to clean them up. Maybe some bandages or ointment? Truth be told, Spot was better at soaking someone than healing them.
Once he got back with his half-hazard supplies, he found the person sitting up on their elbows.
“Hello?” Spot looked at her sceptically. Should he trust this random person?
“Who are you?” The girl asked, trying to sit up further.
Spot shook his head and said, “Lay back down. What happened to you?”
“Answer my question.”
Spot raised an eyebrow. No one ever talked back to him. But, this kid didn’t know he was the King of Brooklyn. He could cut them some slack. “I’m Spot Conlon, newsie, and King of Brooklyn.”
The girl’s eyes narrowed but she laid down as Spot had asked. “I’m Y/n. I-uh.” They cleared their throat, “The Delancey Brothers got to me. They thought I was stealing something.”
“Were you stealing something?” Spot asked in a deadpan voice. He wouldn’t be surprised if this dirty street-rat needed to steal to stay alive. He wasn’t about to diss on it, though. He knew all too well about life on the streets. He started cleaning the girl up.
“Yes.” Y/n admitted. She pulled out a policeman’s whistle, a proud glint in her eye. “It just looked so shiny and I thought I could get some good money for it.” She then squinted at Spot who was cleaning some cuts on her arm, careful for her fresh bruises. “Why’d you take me in? I know newsies are all about loyalty and crap, but I’m not a newsie.”
Spot huffed a laugh, “Just ‘cause you’re not a newsie doesn’t mean I’d leave you out there. That’s cruel.”
“You were still taking a gamble. I could knock you out and steal from you right now.”
This time, Spot laughed for real. “Yeah, sure sweetheart. You could beat me in a fight. And, I don’t know… there was just something about you? I couldn’t imagine you doing anything terrible… Sounds stupid. I know.”
Y/n hummed. “Alright, Spot Conlon. I trust you.”
They went to stand but Spot pushed them back down. “That was a bad soaking. You were unconscious. I’m not about to let you waltz out here.”
Y/n glared at him, “I can take care of myself.”
“From what I just saw, no you can’t.” Spot contradicted. “You’re staying here until you get better.”
Y/n leaned back on Spot's bed, arms crossed. “Then I guess you’re stuck with me, Spot Conlon.”
Spot grinned, “I guess I am.”
