After a month hiatus, we’re back with the warm up sketches of DC’s latinxs and hispanics heroes. So… did you guys knew that EL DIABLO was a legacy hero?
I had no idea that there was not one, not two, but three characters who used the EL DIABLO monicker. The first one was Lazarus Lane, a white dude who’s one of many DC’s western heroes. The third -and most popular and well known is Chato Santana, who we’ll return to in the future-.
But today we’re talking about Rafael Sandoval, the second hero -and first latinx- who used the EL DIABLO name. Rafael was a city councilman in the border town of Dos Ríos, Texas, and besides being a politician, he was also the super hero EL DIABLO, basing his identity in an old boxer persona and legends about the Devil.
He fought mostly arsonists and drug smugglers while protecting his town and, from time to time, had encounters with the Justice League and other heroes. He even “died” in a Lobo comic, but it wasn’t considered canon, since he and many other characters returned.
Eventually he faded during Infinite Crisis, and never returned, eventually, the DIABLO identity pasing to Chato Santana.
