@jaytimweek: Different Mentors AU
For Tim it was obvious that it would be Stray/Catlad, but Jason I was undecided. Poison Ivy, Deathstroke, Ra's al Ghul… in the end (thank you so much procrastination) I chose Black Mask. That way I would have left also a normal Jason.

I think it’s really funny how Tim had at least one parent besides Bruce (who was not explicitly his parent for the longest time) for most of his time as Robin and yet nobody contests that he has been Bruce’s son, Dick’s brother, etc. since far before his actual adoption. But with Duke it’s a whole debate every time.
“Duke’s parents are still alive so it’s disrespectful” Tim’s stepmom was alive but unable to take care of Tim, when he was adopted by Bruce. Is it disrespectful to her to say Tim is Bruce’s son? Or does this argument only apply to Duke?
“Bruce didn’t adopt Duke, he was just his guardian” Do you know who else Bruce also didn’t adopt for his entire childhood? Or is Dick no longer Bruce’s son in any way whatsoever?
“Dick actually called Tim his brother” Jason’s included Duke as one of his brothers.
“Some people don’t like anything post-flashpoint” Those same people usually include Kate Kane.

While a good "apprentice loses mentor" can be a real tearjerker,, the thing that REALLY gets me is "mentor loses apprentice". Like,, "i taught you everything i know. I prepared you as best as i could. I watched when you fell and then scrambled back to your feet. I dealt with your constant groans of exhaustion and annoyance and boredom. I watched you grow day after day. When i first met you you could barely crawl, but now you can outrun me. We laughed and fought and hurt each other. You revealed a part of me i didn't know existed. You cared about me and I cared about you. But despite everything my teachings were not enough. You always wanted to make me proud, and for fuck's sake you did. You made me so proud. And i wish i could've told you how proud i was - how proud i am. It wasn't you who failed this time, it was me. I failed you." ABSHDJSNAHSJHSKGHSBAH yESSSS
bonus points if the mentor is immortal and the apprentice is mortal. You don't know the limits of a mortal, and your apprentice will teach you everything. They will teach you of laughter and love and the beauty of everything fleeting. They will teach you of tears and death and how fragile humans are. How easily they can break. How to mend them when they do. You were the one supposed to teach them, but it was them who taught you. And you will watch your apprentice age and change and you will stay the same. Whether it be today, tomorrow, in years, decades - you will watch your pupil die. And when you add the shit i said above, you can hear me screaming in the distance.
bonus BONUS points if they grow really close - when it becomes almost parental. YOOOooOooOO

In my opinion, I've always seen a reflection between Jessica and Hobie.
[A SHORT post where I ponder about Jess and Hobie a bit]
It's so incredibly subtle - but balanced, in big and small ways.
For one, they both can be considered some of the only 'plain clothes' Spider-people.
It's ironic that Jessica is the only one who chooses to openly show her face, meanwhile in the comics - Hobie chose to actually show his face.
They both have natural hair, very strong in their standing and morals. They're willing to joke - with people they like and respect as equals - ignoring the people they don't:
Jessica jokes with Miguel, but doesn't speak to Miles directly. Hobie jokes with Miles right away, but doesn't speak to Miguel directly.
Personality wise, they have the same foundations - They're head-strong, and confident, organized, and considered leaders to the people around them - often being idolized by people they first meet (In Jess's case, Gwen - and in Hobie's, Miles).
Yet, we never really see this in action!!!
The two don't even really look at each other - I'm not even sure they like each other. They share two exchanges - one in which Jessica ignores him.
And the second, Hobies outright defiant towards her.
[gif credit to the lovely @happy-xy]
But-
They're both mentors to Gwen. Throughout the story, it's Gwen who's their focus.
They both offer her housing in one way or another-
And each time Gwen was stranded in her universe - it was either Jess or Hobie that came to her rescue.
Hobie's looking out for his drummer, Jessica with her star pupil.
So much could be said for their style of mentoring, the support they give to Gwen and how it affects her, and how it reflects truths within the Black community.
But to do that we'd have to clear up the dirt y'all be throwing on Jessica's name cause I AIN'T HAVING IT I REFUSE
And rest assured!!! Imma go to bat for the black woman IDC!!! I have the EVIDENCE!!!! If theres two characters Imma fight for it's THEMMMM (Miles is third srry Miles)
BUT ID KILLLL FOR A SCENE OF THESE TWO TALKING I WANT IT SO BAD
He's so 'I don't have to listen to you' She's so 'boy stop playing with me I'm not one of your lil friends'

I love how Discworld's mentor characters are all deeply flawed actually. Tired of old people having everything right, I love how these ones set up the next generation with room to grow and be idealistic, even if the mentors themselves are deeply rooted in the old practices of the system they've already changed so much. Pratchett really said we should revere our elders but also seek to push past their limits

I feel like if Dipper were ever reincarnated as a demon, he wouldn't fit in super well with the others. Yes, he's been raised to vie for power and step on everyone in his way using whatever means is necessary - it's the same toxic bizz as when he was a human, appealing to gender norms. He's tougher, scarier, more powerful (than ordinary humans, that is), but when it comes to asserting control - being Evil - he doesn't have it in him. Given enough time, I think he'd grow pretty vocal about leaving living things alone. NOT torturing organisms for the hell of it, or stealing people's souls, or conquering planets. Sure, he's a demon. That's no excuse to be a MONSTER.
It's a VERY unpopular opinion amongst neighboring demons, and rumor spreads fast about the Goody Two-Shoed Activist imp raining on everyone's blood-splattered parade, so much so that it makes it to Bill, who's immediately intrigued. Call it intuition, but only one soul's capable of overriding goddamn demon nature for some preachy bullshit about "Doing Good." Lucky for him, demons occupy the same plane of existence, so all it really takes to verify the guy is a snap of his fingers, and POOF! He's floating right next to him. Sure enough, Dipper's fashioned himself a new and improved demonic form, and it is lovely!
No one likes Dipper's kumbaya "Can't We All Just Get Along" ideology, but Bill's almost instantly smitten with the guy, whoever he is, so he's gotta be at least somewhat powerful. Demons take notice when the all-powerful Bill Cipher starts lending his time (and magic?) to some low-leveler like Dipper. Is he being blackmailed? Are they working together? No. Not possible. Bill doesn't "work" with anyone, save for whatever human catches his eye every few decades. Doesn't look to be doing him any benefit, either. The opposite, even. Lending power to a saint like Dipper only makes it harder to cause chaos, after all. Why would he actively go against his OWN best interest to cater some imp's? It's almost like he's. He's.
A henchmen.
(Bill's also 30% more affectionate the first month they reunite, because he still can't believe that his adorable little human husband came back as the same SPECIES as him! He'd never complain over having a sweet human to squeeze, but one with teeth and claws and cute pointy ears doesn't hurt).

listen listen listen listen. i am never going to get over singed & viktor. CAN YOU IMAGINE THE MENTAL ANGUISH. THE MESS OF EMOTIONS VIKTOR HAS TO DEAL WITH. he's so steadfast with his morals and ideals. hextech must not be weaponized. dangerous science is fine as long as the only person at risk of getting hurt is me. the moment it kills someone else he's fucking BROKEN by it and just throws in the gd towel. YET SINGED WAS THE ONE WHO TAUGHT HIM. like just. imagine, ok. imagine— take the premise that singed & viktor were actually pretty close. viktor was lonely as a kid, but he found company in rio. in singed. singed provides a space and opportunity for viktor to do his science stuff. "we can be loners together." here's someone he probably has a decent amount of affection and respect for, maybe even admires like a kid would a mentor/role model/parental figure. and he hurts rio. and viktor doesn't understand, he can't reconcile this. "we can be loners together," but also, "you did this?" viktor's got like a whole slew of emotions to deal with. What the fuck? How could you? I hate you. But also, "I told you, I was consulting a friend about our quandary."
"You built this? Why aren't you playing with the others?"
"We can be loners together."
Like just what are you supposed to do when someone who provided for you — who took care of you, who looked after you as a kid — hurts someone? Someone that you care about? What the FUCK are you supposed to when that person is willing to torture and kill for science — something that you are also passionate about, the very thing you both found commonality in, bonded over — and does it all without even a hint of remorse? What are you supposed to think?
Are you allowed to find comfort and safety in that person anymore? Can you still have good memories about them, and look back at them fondly? Can you be thankful for all the good that person's done for you?
What does it say about you, if they're the one who influenced you so much so early in your life, and here they are now?
Viktor gets Sky killed, and can you imagine what must've been running through his head? I'm no better than him. I'm turning out just like him. I am just like him. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
AND IT'S JUST.
AAGGHH!!!

Suits Season 3 Episode 2. In which Louis literally talks about Harvey and Mike’s relationship as romantic. To quote:
Louis: I need the 411 on the breakup.
Donna: Are we in high school?
Louis: Life is high school. And I need to know if the prom king and his boy wonder are still an item.
Donna: What high school did you go to?
Louis: Donna, it's a simple question. Did Mike and Harvey break up break up, or did they take a time-out and, like, say to each other, "Hey, let's see other people and make sure that we're sure."

genuinely cannot get over how similar reigen and dimple's arcs are, how reigen wants to "be somebody" and how dimple wants to be deified and worshiped, and both are willing to lie and manipulate to get there
and then at the end they realize they don't have to be somebody important for everyone. it's enough to just be someone important for one kid who needs them, who trusts them and deserves their honesty
