Hello. If I remember correctly you once said Kyo's dance moves are similar to a Japanse performance dance (Bukagu?) or something similar and that there was a famous lady performing these as well, so do you perhaps remember the name of this lady? And if I even was right in remembering this or was it a whole other Tumblr I got wrong, haha
Ah, thanks for reminding me! It took a hell of a long time to find that post again, but searching "theatre" did it.
It was Kyo who mentioned being inspired by Ban'yuu Inryoku. I'm pretty sure that I had checked some videos of them and might have commented about that after the linked post above. I meant to go watch one of their performances too.

Been spending the past week deep diving back into the visual kei bands I was enamored with in high school and foaming at the mouth because back in the days of pre-social media, pre-Spotify, and YouTube still in its infancy I was pretty much limited to whatever images I could scrounge up on google and deviantart and the dozen or so songs I was able to find on limewire so I ended up hitting a wall pretty quick with how invested I could get but now I have access to so much and I’m aaaaaa?????? Been realizing how much those artists were a blueprint for me in my formative years of out there performative femininity and genderfuckery and costuming dramaaaaa before I really knew what drag even was and how influential they’ve been to my current aesthetic sensibilities and getting to re-process all of this through the lens of being a queer adult has been really exciting 🥲

J-Fashion Terms for Beginners 3: Electric Boogaloo
Tumblr media
Angura Kei: A Visual Kei substyle inspired by traditional Japanese underground theater performances (Angura = Underground), but it is occasionally associated with Ero-Guro Visual Kei bands. People who wear Angura typically wear traditional Japanese clothing such as kimonos, military uniforms, and school uniforms (seifukus and gakurans usually) but with a gothic twist or references to the supernatural (such as those triangle handkerchiefs worn by ghosts in Japanese folklore). It isn't uncommon to see them wear shironuri makeup as that was worn by Angura actors during the 1960s and 1970s. From what I've seen, Angura isn't typically a style one wears day to day due to its over the top and elaborate nature. Some known Angura Kei bands are: MUCC, cali≠gari (though they are more known for Ero-Guro), Zombie Lolita and Inugami Circus-dan.

A truly theatrical blast from the past...
Tumblr media
Erokawa: Translates as "erotic cute", this aesthetic and style is also known as Erokakkoi (translates as "erotic cool"). Erokawa contrasts most kawaii trends by incorporating the concepts of sexiness seen in the West. While it is mostly a "visual art" type of kawaii style, I have seen outfits that do match this style; they tend to be mainly pastel clothes styled after lingerie, actual lingerie, clothes that share elements with Agejo Gyaru, shirts with sexy kawaii girls on them, or just your typical "tight sexy outfit with references to kawaii culture or ecchi on it. For accessories you'll see chokers, leg garters, handcuffs, harnesses and occasionally cat ears. The idea of cuteness is associated with neoteny, fragility, innocence and youthfulness; the idea of sexiness is associated with adulthood, experience, excitement and maturity. Sexiness can technically be seen as what cuteness is meant to evolve into once we all turn from children to adults. But Japan is famous for loving everything that can be considered "cute" and not approving of "non-cute" things unless they are made "cuter" for mainstream media, and yes...this partially includes sexuality that is natural for adult women to have. Enter famous Japanese Idol, Kumi Koda. Unlike most idols who's contractual purity is stricter than a Disney Channel star's, Kumi broke the mold by taking erotic elements in her artistic style and showing how they too can be seen as valid and acceptable. In contrast to other "sexy" kawaii trends, Erokawa was created with feminism and for women to take ownership of their sexuality.

Let's get sexy~...and adorable!
Tumblr media
Ero-Guro Kei: If one thinks of Visual Kei they are most likely thinking of one of these subgenres and styles; Kote Kei (means "old school kei", this is basically how Visual Kei bands dressed in the 90s), Tanbi Kei (means "aeshetic school", this style is inspired by classic European fashion), or Ero-Guro Kei, the style we're discussing here. In case the name didn't give it away already, Ero-Guro Kei basically means "erotic" and "grotesque". As described by the website TV Tropes, this style is meant to be an Interplay of Sex and Violence. Most Ero-Guro Kei bandmembers tend to wear clothes similar to Kote Kei, but with more exposed skin (i.e. not wearing a shirt or wearing a low-cut one) and tons of S&M/bondage or fetish elements like chokers, corsets, harnesses, leather and lace or mesh worn together and masquerade masks. Despite this, for most people the "Ero-Guro" part in Ero-Guro Kei usually comes from the vulgar and raunchy lyrics in their songs coupled with horrifying music videos. Some famous Ero-Guro Kei bands include but are not limited to: cali≠gari, Dir En Grey (during their earlier albums), Kagerou and ANTI-KRANKE.

goth mai and punk suki agenda has actually infected me, I'm researching music to make them a playlist. What bands do you think mai would listen to in particular?
OH MY GOODNESS. OKAY SO mai is such a vkei listener to me. i think she would fuck with vkei sooo heavily. stuff like lareine, the gazette, plastic tree, dir en grey, and ofc malice mizer and buck-tick. i also think she would love gothic metal. and maybe even some moody shoegaze? specifically from the 80s though. and my punk suki agenda stems from the fact that i KNOW kyoshi makeup is based on kabuki makeup, but it also reminds me sooo much of trad goth makeup??? im not really sure where exactly trad goth makeup was inspired by and the articles i read MENTIONED kabuki makeup and egyptian makeup, but nothing was really definite lol. But like i said this is PUNK suki we're talking about so only her makeup would be gothy. everything else about her would be very much punk. and not EVEN just the fashion obviously like she totally embodies the spirit of punk too (<-WHICH IS IMPORTANT!!!). as for the music i think she'd fuck with the harder stuff lol. but SPECIFICALLY 80s-90s garage rock. and whatever the rock genre is where its just.... rock-esque noise. lots of nonsensical drums and shredding and a loud ass singer that's got like medium bad tone and shots a lot but doesnt scream. and unrelated but i also think she'd like the beastie boys. her workout playlist is headache inducing

2013/1/16 Interview with Kaoru by Tatsuro (MUCC) on Tokyo FM (JACK IN THE RADIO)
Highlights
T: The coupling track (of Rinkaku) is so heavy! Its been 15 years since you first recorded Kiri to Mayu, right?
K: Yeh, I cant believe I've been in this band so long.
T: That was just around the time MUCC started. Its awsome when I think about it.
K: It was one of the first songs we wrote after we formed. We rented this kind of container in a warehouse, you know the type usually packed onto ships? And we all logded in there together for a week, and wrote some original songs of our own.
T: So at the very start you only had a handful of songs as Dir en grey? Where did Kiri to Mayu fall in the order of songs? What was the very first song you wrote?
K: The first ones were Aoi Tsuki, and Karma. And then Kiri to Mayu came a few songs later.
T: Do you play it live?
K: ...No
T: Hahaha
K: When we decided to re-do it, I listened to it for the first time in ages, and listening to the end was actually embarrassing.
T: What, because of the arrangement or something?
K: Because of everything!
......
T: So, the other song on the release is the Remix version of Rinkaku. This remix is by Yamaoka Akira, who created the soundtrack for the horror game Silent Hill. Why did you ask him to do it?
K: Well, we've known him for a while, and when we started thinking about including a remix, we wanted to find someone to do it who you wouldn't normally associate with this type of thing. So we thought of him, and when we asked him, he agreed.
T: Where did you meet him?
K: Well, like connections through work, he came to our lives and stuff.
T: Do you guys play video games?
K: Yeah, well...not much recently, but yeah.
T: What kind of games do you like?
K: RPGs I guess.
T: Like Dragon Quest?
K: Yeah.
T: Dir en grey plays Dragon Quest! Haha. Do you decide on the main character's name at the start?
K: Yeah, Kaoru.
T: Haha, you call it Kaoru?? Dir en grey uses Kaoru to destoy the Demon King in Dragon Quest?! How cute is that??
.....
T: So later we will take some photos using Dir en grey's new single Rinkaku as inspiration. The theme will be 'Contoured Poses'. Ahh, this is tough. Should I do something? hahaha. Check out our mobile site if you wanna see.
And next is Radio Dragon with presenter Kanno Yui taking about image, and whether people like clean cut types. I wonder what kind of look she likes on a man. Kaoru, can I ask you, what type of woman do you like?
K: I don't have a type.
T: Really? Not like cute girls, or smart girls?
K: No, but....I like lips.
T: Hahaha
K: Like, shiny lips, I like that.
T: Cute and sexy, right?
K: Yeah.

I'm so excited for this new DR. I want a DR with just me and Blade, since I have a few DRs where I have just DH as my s/o. (I don't like to show favoritism between my partners so having so many side DRs with DH was making me feel really bad.)
It's an AU where I'm a singer in a j-metal visual kei inspired band, I get to meet all the vkei bands that inspired me (like dir en grey, the GazettE, Girugamesh, and more), and I scripted Blade is there as a metal singer in his own band.
Living out my 14 year old hyperfixation on visual kei... through my DR.
Is this DR incredibly niche? Yes absolutely lol. BUT I AM SO EXCITED FOR IT!!!
