minor spoilers for fontaine archon quest ahead
with a verdict, another trial draws to a close. the spectators stream out of the opéra epiclese, prepared for another gloomy, stormy afternoon.
yet the rain does not come.
a few dark clouds soon give way to the sun, the sky a crystalline blue that mirrored the oceans.
the people mutter to each other at the strange phenomenon, but are glad to enjoy the sunny day nonetheless. some theorize about the possibility of the hydro dragon feeling particularly at ease with today’s ruling, but most just simply hurry out to the streets, quickly filling the patio seats of the cafe or the park benches, as if afraid that any delay would warrant a sudden downpour.
hidden in the palais mermonia, as the warm sun rays seep through the thick velvet curtains, as the dust in the air dance in the beams of light, what the people do not see is the iudex of fontaine, aquamarine coattails splayed out like that of a mermaid's, being held so contently in the arms of his lover.
neuvillette’s head rests on your shoulder as you sink against the plush seats of the sofa, his thumb drawing mindless circles on your side.
he was insistent on you not coming to watch his trials, with the reasoning being lady furina's drama and flair too unnecessary to the legal proceedings. after all, what is the point of a serious trial when everyone acts like they're there for a theatre show?
what he doesn't tell you, is how much he hates seeing the minuscule changes in your expression when either side discloses a particularly disturbing detail. he knows how sensitive you are to such things, fontainians being dissolved to primordial sea water or otherwise. your sunny and bubbly personality being dimmed by the cruelty of the world is the last thing he wants to see.
if the world is really this cruel, then let him be the only one to have to bear it.
and so you don't ask him about how his trial went. instead, you talk about the new beverage the café lucerne is promoting, rumoured to have been invented by the blond traveller. you ask him for his thoughts on the legends of the narzissenkreuz institute, whether he’s seen the new bouquets of flowers laid out amongst shops in vasari passage, or if he’s ever been to the seaside and seen the cute little otters holding colourful shells.
you even ask him to tell you once again how all the different mechanisms operate at the beaumont workshop, to which he would patiently explain despite having told the stories countless times. his voice is soothing as he rambles on about cogs and gears and whatnot, even as your brain has long forgone trying to understand the mechanics. just hearing his voice, knowing that his mind is now occupied by all the other wonderful things the world has to offer, it puts you at peace.
and for once, it doesn’t rain in fontaine after a trial.

Here's a dragon artwork to kick start the Lunar New Year!
Featured is a new character to the Aceverse/Neuverse, Jing Wen! A dragon demi-god hailing from China, Jing Wen would find her way to the United States as part of her quest to reunite with her older sister who was taken away from her before she was born.
Her journey would eventually take her to the state of Illinois where she has taken on the unofficial mantle of Great Lakes City's resident heroine. Unlike her counterpart in Royal Woods, Jing Wen doesn't actively seek out crime, and only intervenes when she encounters it whilst on her quest. As such, she is often thought to be a legend by the locals. That being said, those who find themselves on the wrong side of the law are bound to have a taste of her glaive and fiery breath.
When not investigating the whereabouts of her sister, she can be found working as a waitress at a café at Chinatown. Of course, don't expect to find a young lady with a tail there as she also has the ability to take on the form of a regular person.
As you can tell, I'm still quite hyped for The Casagrandes Movie, so I made a Chinese Demi-god character to go alongside Punguari. I dont think Jing Wen will play a major role in the AU, but she may pop up time and again. Also this artwork of her was meant to be part of a much larger scene, but unfortunately I ran out of time to complete it. -v-
I have yet to come up with an alias/hero name for her, so do give suggestions in the comments below, and I may choose the most creative/fitting name! That being said, I would like to wish everyone a prosperous Lunar New Year, and good luck in the Year of the Dragon!

After Starswirl glanced back at the Princesses, who quietly breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that the Pillars fortunately managed to stop Rockhoof from speaking deafeningly loudly, which would have caused a lot of distress to everybody in the Centre, he asked them if he was missing something; and Celestia sweetly smiled as she took his hoof, while Luna grabbed and held the small Mirror for him.
When she showed him the Mirror, Luna told him to look at it for a little bit longer than before, as he had missed what made this Mirror so special, adding that the image he saw in the frame was not a picture at all; and though he was confused as to what she meant, the Bearded grabbed the Mirror out of her hoof and into his own, and held it increasingly close to his face, to the others' amusement.
Only when his snout was almost touching the Mirror did the Pillars speak up, barely able to hold in their laughter, and told Starswirl that they could hardly see him anymore, before they asked him to move the Mirror away from his face; but only after the Sisters briefly explained that they made the linked Mirrors for him and the Pillars to speak did the Old Greybeard understand, but to an extent.
As Starswirl looked back at the Mirror, he waved to what he still believed to be just a mere image, until the other Pillars all waved back to him, whereafter his eyes widened in surprise, and a smile grew upon his face, and he was speechless; and the Pillars quietly asked him how he was feeling, to which he slowly replied with a stutter that he was all right, but even better now that he saw them.
With a solemn nod to their former Mentor, the two Sisters left his room to give Starswirl some time to speak with his Oldest and Eldest friends, and they decided to go downstairs to find anything for Starswirl to eat; for although it might take a long time before he could walk around unaided again, they figured that it would be nice if they got him a sweet treat or some small snacks to nibble on.
While Celestia and Luna went downstairs to look for a shop or café, back at the Crystal Castle, the others were headed their separate ways, each gathering what they expected they would need to send a care package to their friends in the Dragon Lands across the Sea; but when Stygian and Eclipse made it to the Great Hall to meet up with Spike, neither of the two let him know what they talked about.
Instead, as Stygian and Spike started to gather a collection of various snacks from the kitchen, as well as their baked goods, Eclipse returned to their room to write a letter to the Eastbound group, wherein they wondered about their quest; for while they had met Captain Inferno before they stepped through the gateway, they were unsure as to how many folks were waiting for them on the other side.
After they sent off the letter towards the group, hoping that either Nox or Light received it, they flew back to the Great Hall, where Stygian and Spike just finished wrapping up a couple of packages using rope, filled with a variety of foods and drinks; but just after the two said they were ready, Stygian lifted his hoof, and politely requested a moment of silence from them, for he had to focus.
Neither Spike nor Eclipse understood why he asked them to be quiet, since, save for them, there was nobody else around to make a sound, yet, when he turned back, and told them that he had just spoken with Nox and Light over the letter, they only grew more confused; but Stygian promised them that he would explain in due time, as long as they believed that he could truly hear what they were saying.
Despite the many questions they had for him, Spike and Eclipse relented, and asked Stygian what the others were telling or asking him, to which he replied that they had to do nothing more than create a focal point for them to target; and if they placed what they wanted to send around the point, one of the members of their group should be able to translocate it, even over such an immense distance.
They collected everything on the table, and made the focal point, whereafter Eclipse looked back.
Just as they turned around, however, a fiery gate opened right above the pile of packages…

Homelands for My OCs and their origins
Dragon Empire
Dragon Empire is also the origin for Dragons as the ancestor founded and built as the domain. Some dragons are sending to the Isle of Cornelia for protecting the school and riding by the students or staffs if there's any danger. Also they used for train students for improve their bravery and have a bond of the relation.
This empire was a strict monarchy with the king and queen of Draconaheart family raising Laurel to be the next queen of the kingdom, while Seraphine and Isabella shall be the youngest princesses.
It is also the home of Nymphs. Their mission is gone to protect the world. Laurel is the one of them, later become a Supreme Nymph. They lived in the Forest of Dreams further to the kingdom.
The language of the history book is written in kingdom's official language which only those live in the past century know to read, and made it difficult for young generation.

Aurora Empyrean
The neighboring kingdom of Dragon Empire and is known for the home to many brave heroes and natural-born leaders, with the members of the current royal family being ones themselves.
It was monarched by the heiress whom related to Dragon Empire. She is the only queen who lead a group of skilled warriors in order to protect the magic world from the dark forces.
The rulers of two joint the team for long after the war against the forces. Soon after, two neighboring kingdom were have a fight due to unavailable reason.
Likewise, it has an unknown isle near the kingdom where the magic school built for magicians to study. The current Headmistress to the school is the friend of the late queen.
Over the years, the queen gave birth to an infant girl and sealed the barrier for a protection. The palace was in frozen over the hundred years and the queen eventually death in the long slumber. It became a desolate realm with ice and snow, cursed by the Dark Wizard. However, the princess was missing after the wizard's spirit conquered the place.
Years pass, Ella and her friends revive the kingdom. After defeats the spirit of the wizard with the help of the her late mother's magic, life returns to the kingdom. As a result, Ella ruled the land of her birth and then married Albert, once again uniting the two kingdoms.

Dreamy City
In the last century, the city was unknown and used to be the main part of Aurora Empyrean. It is an area of protected islands where only magicians and knights are allowed to live. They were used to be racists that prejudice towards humans based on their magic and personalities.
Yet when the evil forces came, all the armies lost a lot in the war, thinking it was over. Fortunately, many human magicians stood up to help at the first time, and finally defeated the enemy. They later decided to unleash magic around the kingdom to work together to protect and undo racially discriminatory laws.
Over the years, the queen named the land "Dreamy City". This means they dream of being anything they want and create astonishing things they want. Soon it has attracted more tourists and visitors to see the amazing things that surround the city.
It is the country where Elise and Jennifer's family lived there. The Dufour family runs the cafe.
Aiden sometimes performs magic tricks to customers at the café, while Vanessa acts as the magical enforcement officer.

Queendom of Quartz
It also known as the Valley of Quartz before.
However, after the monarchy discovered the valley and found minerals, they decided to build kingdoms and towns around the forest. It is ruled by Ariel's family.
The Fairy Guardian of the Galaxy and her families have hosted many events and festivals for the kingdom over the years, such as "One-Day Royals", which is like a coronation to the royalty but is actually a quest for what the royal family give their heir has never dealt with royal duty. It's also a celebration in the Vougefleur dorm, where students perform activities such as passing the magic mirror and labyrinth tests.
In addition, crystal-loving citizens must not miss the "Crystal Festival". Still, it's not just Thanksgiving, it's also a big day for shopaholics to buy what they want at every store. Plus her parents have been so busy buying materials for their business that they've been huddling with a bunch of people. This is why Celine often has to go home for a few days off.
"Parents' Day" is also a celebration that citizens will not miss together, it refers to the Fairy Guardian of the Galaxy's parents who have long since divorced and she wants to be reunited with them.
Another festival in its kingdom, the "Fashion Ball", refers to the idea of the fairy guardian, who planned a fashion show of her dreams.

It's a most peaceful country that the citizens will live in forever and never moved out. However, the monarchy and government occasionally got a lot case from the country.
It is also where Charisse and her family resided, after she was created.
The country's architecture features traditional Chinese architecture. Therefore, it is famous for its Chinese poetry, traditional costumes, historical legends, etc., and many tourists cannot put it down.
Melody Day is a school holiday in the kingdom and a major celebration, only on May 30th. All the citizens are playing the any music instruments they be good at. Also there has a concert that are presenting to the students from schools in the kingdom.
Music Competition always presenting at every year for build a linked harmony that the Fairy Guardian of Music and her spouse had been play.

Until the mermaid who rescued a human prince, they fell in love and eventually married by their family's permission. Soon, they have their hybrid heir.
Moreover, the kingdom was united by Alcina's great ancestor and the King of the Ocean.
People said there's a riddle to their country for finding the treasure, "Water to the ocean sink in, snake deep onto." Currently, it written in the history book and the motif to the domain.
Most citizens are successful people and patriotic actors of the country. The nation places higher priority on physical education and psychology than on other disciplines. So, a lot of athletes and psycho doctors are born in this country.

Cherry Imperial
It is the oldest kingdom still in existence on the Twisted Wonderland map. However, only citizens who live there can enter or leave the kingdom when the teleportal is open. It is ruled by the Emperor and his daughter, Crown Princess Mizuno Sakura.
The kingdom has a bumper harvest of cherries, plums, apples, etc., which is one of the reasons why the country holds the "Flower and Fruit Harvest" festival. This celebration brings together tourists alike, and has even made the country a favorite tourist destination.
Not only this festival, but the various famous poets who live there and the beautiful cherry blossom forest are also the reasons why tourists want to come. Therefore, the kingdom organized another celebration, "Poetry Appreciation Day" to honor all the poet.
In addition, its kingdom has other festivals, "Cherry Day", to commemorate the romantic love between the Fairy Guardian of Nature and her husband.

The ancient island that least people know where to. It is a small island off the coast of Briar Valley. It is the domain for the people with element powers.
The fairies take over the sovereign to their realms in ancient times. All the Fairy Queens are take orders from the Fairy High Queen, till some extent, the Fairy Queen of Justice who treat friends and enemies remain neutral to the Good and Evil people all as being equal and cannot take sides.
All places in the island are designed to medieval europe and colored in the less gloomy.
There is a cottage in the dark forest of the distant kingdom where Valeria is quarantined due to her photophobia. It is also a habitat for animals such as squirrels, rabbits, owls and more.

The reason why this country is called the "Magnolia Kingdom" is because it used to be a place full of magnolia trees, and it was also a place where pharmacists came to pick magnolias. They say the flowers and bark can be made into medicine to treat symptoms like weight loss and anxiety.

The country where Darling's mother was born and lived with her relatives before marrying her father to unite the two kingdoms. It is formerly ruled by Darling's maternal grandfather until her aunt ascended the throne as Empress.
Her mother often came back to deal with emergencies or tantrums in the palace, though had been escaped from the realm long years.
Likely to Melodie Kingdom, the nation is the famous local for the visitors. Many stores around the town that comes from other countries, most of the beauty cosmetics, fashions and ancient artifacts.

Flutterville Meadow
The small village where Silvia and Annabelle lived in. It is a part of the Spring Greenland.
There is a story that these two places were started by the Harvest sisters. The older sister built an orchard and the younger sister a garden. They all focus on the plants in their locale.
The story sparked speculation about what the sisters had been unidentified. Some people think they quarreled and separated. Others have speculated that the sisters were part of a half-family where their mother died and they moved away from their father.
Pretty like Harveston Village, Flutterville Meadow is the place where many elderlies lived. It has many tourists come to see the beautiful flower meadow and celebrate the flower fest together.
There is a special place that only the villagers are familiar with, that is the Willow of Life. This is the magic tree planted by the sister on her deathbed. The wind blows, every leaf has its own melody. Villagers can hear its leaves ringing like small bells while tourists only can hear the sound of rustle.

Alnwick castle
Alnwick Castle is located in the town of Alnwick in Northumberland, England. Built in the 11th century following the Norman conquest. The castle has been renovated and remodeled numerous times throughout its long history. Alnwick Castle has served as a military outpost, a college, a refuge for evacuees, a film set, and a family home. The Percy family has owned it for over 700 years. The 12th Duke of Northumberland, Ralph Percy, inherited the dukedom in 1995. The interior boasts a chapel, a library, and State Rooms decorated in the Italian Renaissance style with gilded ceilings, silk wall coverings, and collections of art from 16th century Old Masters like Titian, Palma il Vecchio, and Sir Anthony Van Dyck. The castle has exhibitions in three perimeter towers, a courtyard café, a restaurant, a gift shop, and two interactive family areas called Knight’s Quest and Dragon Quest. Game Recommendations?
There's a certain kind of game I really want to play where I work in a café or restaurant (or honestly? Any kind of shop, could be a clothing or home design place) and have to make the perfect things for every customer based on subtle clues. The closest I ever got was a mini game in one of the Professor Layton games or working at The Roost in Animal Crossing New Leaf. It's sort of a puzzle where there's a definitive Best Answer (maybe other good/acceptable answers, but only one that will get you the Best Score), but it is such a specific and hard mechanic to find.
On a similar note, I also want to find other games where you can cook/do alchemy randomly to create things and create a recipe catalog similar to cooking in Breath of the Wild or the alchemy pot from Dragon Quest 8. Ones where you don't have to have a recipe to make something, but maybe you sometimes find hints in writing like "oh I tried something like [vague description of ingredients] and I was surprised by what happened!".
They're oddly specific game mechanic itches that I want to scratch and would greatly appreciate if anyone knows of games that have those kinda of gameplay!

Birthdays are not forgotten in Jaal's culture. With how big families are and how traditions can be, it is not surprising that they may host large parties with each person in the family. Jaal being no exception to this. No one is excluded. It didn't matter if he is far from home or not, this is something he always carried.
And with his words falling into silence, his hands moved to grab the gifts, obvious to see where he has placed them on the nearest table. They aren't the best wrapped at all. In fact, it'll be no surprise if Ichiban guessed what is stored inside. Humans and their way of wrapping things up is quite weird. Similar but weird. These gifts was a handmade jacket (matching the same colors as the one he wore), a brass knuckle (oddly choice, but given Jaal saw how Ichiban punched people, it's no surprise why he thought of it), and the new Dragon Quest game.

❝ You got all these things for me? ❞ Unsure how to properly react at first, Ichiban just stands there, only moving to accept the gifts that are pushed into his hands by Jaal. He doesn't even know where to look at first: the red jacket is something he could see himself wearing back in high-school, before he dropped out. And then there's the brass knuckle, which will surely come in handy. Wait, does Jaal see him as a violent person? Sure, he tends to get into fights here and then, but it's not that serious! Ichiban stops worrying as soon as he sees the video game right under the weapon. He probably just wanted to get him things he knew he'd enjoy.
❝ I didn't know you guys celebrated birthdays the same way we do. Guess I should've asked about that before, huh? My bad! ❞ Is that a disrespectful thing to say? There are still many customs he doesn't understand about the Angara ( meeting Jaal feels like a never-ending fever dream on most days, but honestly? He's seen weirder people on the streets of Yokohama ). ❝ Thank you so much, Jaal. Really! I'll try the jacket right now and then we can also play the game! ❞ He's already taking his shirt off, excited about the new clothing item, when the realization that he forgot something hits him. Hold on a second, didn't he say something about a schedule?

Simply Sweet: Legends and Lattes
I just finished Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree. I have thoughts...
Here there be spoilers!
Travis Baldree’s debut novel is billed as a story of “high fantasy and low stakes.” It’s a delightful premise: all the lesbian cottage core dreams of opening a coffee shop with a girlfriend in a quiet and peaceful town where (mostly) everyone is charmed and charming. Except, the girlfriends happen to be monsters and the town is right out of a game of Dungeons and Dragons.
Legends and Lattes features Viv, an orc used to a life of questing who is finally ready to hang up her sword and embark on a new adventure: opening the first coffee shop in her new city. But even when you’re a creature of myth, opening a start-up is a challenging undertaking. It will take the help of new friends Calamity “Cal” the hob, Thimble the rattkin, and Tandri the succubus to help the fledgling café get off the ground. But between old enemies and new jealousies, this party finds trouble brewing even stronger than their espresso!
I have increasingly seen additions to this low-stakes-high-fantasy genre. The narratives are light and tight, characters don’t tend to have much backstory or development, but nevertheless they have a laidback kind of charm. Baldree’s origins are in video games, and it shows. While perfectly entertaining, the novel’s prose is rather bare-bones and plot-driven. Purple prose isn’t a necessity for a fantasy novel, but it was difficult to find anything notable or quotable in this text. Still, fans of all things sword and sorcery may still find the novel worthwhile for a couple of reasons.
First, the book has been described as a comfort read. After decades of the most visible queer content being stories of pain, suffering, and even death, it can be a kind of relief to read a book where challenges include determining what kind of pastries to serve or how to keep your cafe air-conditioned in ye olde pseudo-medieval times. At times it can feel frustrating that the story makes minimal use of its set dressing. Particularly when it periodically veers into anachronism while winking at the reader. Still, there’s something about its message of ‘the real treasure was the friends we made along the way’ that’s as warming and familiar as a cup of good coffee.
Second, it’s surprising and refreshing to read a respectful sapphic story written by a man. As a gay woman, lucky as I am to live among people who are generally accepting, I am nevertheless used to the sting of constantly seeing my identity get sexualized--even by men who should know better. It becomes the default setting to grit your teeth and expect missteps. But Legends and Lattes makes none. The love story between Viv and Tandri is a gentle one founded on mutual respect, admiration, holding each other accountable, and supporting each other’s dreams. Their chemistry is genuine without feeling sordid. Because Tandri is a succubus, the story even weaves in elements of the sexualization and harassment that feminine-presenting individuals face in a realistic manner without veering into exploitative. Between making one love interest an orc (traditionally an ugly, brutish, ‘masculine’ type of creature) and the other a succubus (traditionally representing the demonization of feminine sexuality), Baldree’s sapphics become surprisingly real women living life on their own terms despite the stereotypes the world affixes to them.
Far from being wearisome, this wholesome predictability is simply sweet. So while Tolkien or Le Guin this is not, I do recommend Legends and Lattes. Because sometimes the real treasure is the warmth, love, and acceptance that we find along the way.

The great thing about video games is that they allow players to go anywhere and do anything they want. Someone wants to be a captain of a starship and save the galaxy? They can do that. Someone wants to quest through a fantasy land full of magic and dragons? That’s possible too.
While these types of adventures are enjoyable, video games don’t always have to be about epic adventures. Sometimes, it’s preferable to just sit back and relax. Great beauty can be found in the quieter moments of our favorite titles. Here are some of the best games that embrace the joy found in the little things.

6 Walden: A Game
When writer and naturalist Henry David Thoreau began his ambitious experiment of living in a cabin in the woods outside of Walden Pond, he sought to live his life on its simplest terms. Walden: A Game allows players to live that experiment. Essentially, it’s Thoreau’s experience visualized.

As Thoreau, players’ in-game tasks include maintaining the cabin, tending to their crops, and visiting town for supplies and the occasional odd job. One can zoom in on plants or animals, and find inspiration in them for Thoreau’s book. It really is about taking the time to actually look at what’s already in plain sight.
5 Endless Ocean: Blue World
While the Wii was not the most powerful console at the time, Endless Ocean: Blue World is an instance of the stunning beauty that can be found on the platform, and an incredible sensory experience. The user-created character explores the ocean depths as a member of L and L Diving Services, which travels to bodies of water around the world.
There is a main story, but the true joy of this game is just exploring the myriad wildlife within the depths. All varieties of creatures, big and small, can be discovered, in a diverse range of shapes and colors. If one looks carefully enough, various treasures can be found as well.
4 Calico
As the new owner of the local cat café in the bright pastel world of Calico, serve up coffee and treats for the local townsfolk. Decorate it with multiple styles of furniture, and of course, pet the cats, and dogs, and the raccoons, and, well, everything! Every day is unique in this charming title.

This is one of those cozy games that can be played at whatever pace the player prefers. Villagers are always happy to talk and provide tasks to run, including the Owl Club (Hoot hoot!). The game also includes breakdancing cats. Yes, that’s right, breakdancing cats.
3 Stardew Valley
If the city life has become too busy and frantic, maybe it is time to pack up and live a quieter, simple life on the farm in Stardew Valley. Running a farm requires lots of tasks, including growing crops, putting down fresh soil, making sure the livestock are fed, and picking up supplies at Pierre’s local shop or at JoJa Mart.
It is easy to develop a steady routine on the farm, and create an almost meditative experience. A great sense of satisfaction comes from carving out a living from oneself. The town of Stardew Valley has a strong sense of community, as the townsfolk are glad to talk, and local festivals are a treat to attend. Of course, if the town life is too quiet, then the local mines offer plenty of exploring and monster slaying.
2 Minecraft
Minecraft is a game that everyone and their grandmother knows. The genius of the game is that it is accessible to virtually everybody, but has unlimited potential for those who want to know everything about it.

While creatures may come out at night, during the day it is peaceful. A calming soundtrack worthy of Bob Ross himself accompanies the journey across the blocky landscape, populated by colorful flowers and peaceful creatures, some of which can be corralled and tamed. If survival proves a bit too stressful, a creative mode is there to just relax and build whatever the imagination conjures.
1 Animal Crossing
The Animal Crossing games have graced virtually every Nintendo console since Animal Forest on the Nintendo 64. The games have evolved quite a bit, but the basic formula remains largely the same: a cute rag doll character moves into a village populated by cheery animals, spruces up the neighborhood, and runs errands for the neighbors. Each title, in its own way, encourages players to live a peaceful and simple life.
The message of the Animal Crossing franchise is to take life day-by-day, the good and the bad. Even if something goes wrong, players are encouraged to embrace it. After all, where is the fun in having everything go exactly as desired? No cosmic threat faces the village, and there is no time limit for any tasks. It is simply about just being. And the game’s real-time cycle has plenty of holidays, seasons, and special events for being at the right place at the right time.

I finished 7th Dragon III Code: VFD on Nintendo 3DS just a few days ago and wanted to write something about it because it seems like it's a pretty overlooked gem. 7th Dragon III is a role-playing game developed and published by Sega and released in the west in 2016. The third game is the first one in the series that's been released outside of Japan.
Here's a synopsis of the premise: "In the year 2100, dragons have descended upon earth and humanity is at the mercy of these terrifying beasts. However, not all is lost. As the protagonist, the player will team up with Nodens Enterprises - a video game company dedicated to stopping the dragon menace - to become a dragon hunter and eventual savior of the universe. Although times are bleak, Nodens Enterprises has found a way to tip the scales in favor of mankind: By traveling through time to three different eras, the protagonist can upset the balance of the dragons' power. This will give them the edge to defeat the True Dragons, and stand a chance against the most powerful one of them all... the 7th Dragon: VFD."
7th Dragon III has a bit more unique classes and systems compared to your standard fare JRPGs - you even get to build a cat café. Its futuristic setting avoids the typical clichés of crystals and amnesia. It's actually a bit eerie playing the game in 2021 and the story mentioning a deadly sickness spreading in 2020 and 2021. Not going to spoil the story more but I thought it was pretty decent and even surprised with its darkness considering the overall happy tone.
Customization is quite versatile. You create one character to represent yourself and then create more to your team of 3, selecting one of the 8 classes, an illustration, style, a color palette and finally a voice (40 options of professional Japanese voice actors).
After advancing the story a bit you can have 3 teams that you can swap. These extra support teams travel along with your primary team and provide support.
Naturally each class has their own set of skills which you can purchase with skill points without restrictions. This was quite a nice feature as you're not bound to skill trees that would force you to get skill X first before you can invest points into skill Y. There are also special powerful "exhaust skills" you unlock later in the game.
The dungeon crawling gameplay is inspired by Etrian Odyssey but from third-person perspective and you don't have to draw maps. There's random encounters indicated by a "danger meter" and sometimes I felt like encounters were too frequent. You can stop enemy encounters for a while with a skill or consumable item if battles get too tedious.
Combat can get somewhat challenging when fighting the bigger monsters and bosses. I played on easy difficulty myself and was able to win the final battle on my third try.
There are quality of life features like teleporting to various locations and possibility to retry a battle if your team wipes. Side quests are carried out swiftly and conveniently when you can teleport inside the headquarters building too. Some small UI design improvements could have made the game more intuitive. Positive thing was that I didn’t have inventory management issues aside from not being able to pick up a “Healing Aloe I” because I already had 15 of them in my inventory.
The game features music by Yuzo Koshiro and it has a modern feel to it. There are upbeat and easy-going tunes, some of what I'd call elevator music, even poppy vocal tracks, but also some more dramatic orchestral pieces.
I finished the game in 52 hours so it should offer a decent value for your money if you measure it in play time. If you're into JRPGs and haven't looked into 7th Dragon yet, by all means give it a go.
