Little detail I noticed re-watching Into the Spiderverse

In the scene where Miles and Peter are in the Spider restaurant Peter was talking about how the restaurant had closed down and he didn’t know why.

if you look at the window you can see a C on the window. This is a  rating from the health department that rates from A to C, with A meaning it is up to code and C meaning it is a public risk and is on the verge of closure. 1610 Spiderman was smart not to invest in Spiderman themed restaurants.

For those who’ve grown up in Appalachia, this gangly, bushy perennial herb with bright red stems, broad, crinkled leaves, and iridescent purple-blue berries needs no introduction. The young leaves and shoots of American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) have historically been harvested by mountain folk in the spring and sauteed with bacon grease to make poke sallet. But the leaves and shoots must be properly cleaned and rinsed to remove their toxins. As pokeweed grows, it becomes increasingly more toxic - ingesting any part of the mature plant can cause respiratory failure and death in humans and livestock. The flowers and berries, which start out green and gradually turn purple-blue by late summer, have some wildlife value, but many people in the east consider the plant to be weedy. However, as it occasionally turns out, one person’s weed is another person’s ornamental - pokeweed has reportedly become a popular garden plant in Europe.

Mistake Toast

A very simple recipe. How could you possibly mess this up?

Brown some butter in a pan

Fry some minced garlic in the browned butter

Add sourdough to toast

You may think this is a good idea. Here is why it is not:

Browned butter is sweeter than regular butter.

Fried garlic is sweeter than raw garlic.

Garlic bread is not supposed to be sweet.

(But wait! There's more!)

If you cook the garlic before you add the bread, it will burn while the bread is toasting

If you brown too much butter, the bread will become very soggy and won't toast well

Toasting the butter-soaked bread until it's actually toast will guarantee the garlic burns

Final product is both too sweet, too soggy/lightly toasted, and too charred to be good garlic bread, but it's still edible and provides an acceptable dining experience. 4/10, needs major work.

Now, browned butter sourdough toast with, say, cinnamon sugar added afterwards? With fruit, perhaps? That would be better. But don't make this. It's not good. Or do, I guess. I won't stop you.

leon has had you to himself for months now and he’s so happy about it, he loves having you around. he’s so proud about how well you have adapted to your new home, he hated hurting you like that but you just kept fighting him….so he had to teach you how to be good.

“l-leon! let me go! why are you doing this!?” you screamed, thrashing around in your binding on the cold floor of leon’s basement. you couldn’t read leon’s face at all and it scared you, he stole you from your own home and kept you in his basement. why? what did you do wrong? was he mad? did he hate you? was he going to kill you? these thoughts brought you to tears, you started sobbing profusely while begging leon to let you go.

“shh shh….don’t cry angel. if you keep fighting me i’ll have to hurt you, i don’t want to hurt you baby.” his voice had a dark sense of sympathy, he took you into arms and started rocking back and forth. you thought this was a great attempt to escaped, the only thing that he bothered to tie were your arms. you nuzzled his arm and peppered it with light kisses, he smiled softly thinking you have finally listened to him. he felt a sharp pain in his arm and let out a scream, you bit him. you bit him? are you fucking crazy?

you desperately tried to run up the stairs screaming, trying to get anyone’s attention, you were didn’t know how it happened. your head stung, it burned, your vision was blurry. you saw leon standing above you and his stare was dark, he was breathing heavily in dangerous excitement. he crouched down and grabbed you by your hair, he pulled you close to his face and spat on you.

“bad dog. are you that fucking stupid?” you whined at his words, they were so cruel. you shouldn’t want him to praise you, you need to leave, you need to escape. you tried to pull away from him which was meat with a harsh smack to the face, you cried out in pain. “m’sorry! please no more…i-i promise i-i’ll listen i’m sorry..” you cried trying to convince him you were serious, you didn’t want to be hit anymore. leon looked at you for a moment before smiling, the smile made you feel safe for a moment…. he leaned towards your ears.

“fucking liar. i’ll beat it into your head that you are just a fucking dog, and bad dogs get punished.”

now look at you, you’re being such a good dog for leon! you have graduated from basement to doggy bed right next to leon, instead of not eating at all you get delicious food and snacks in your pretty dog bowl, no more hitting, no more whipping you until you bleed, no more choking till you pass out. you’re a good dog now! so you get spoiled all the time, like a good dog.

“puppy, come here please.” he hears the quick jingle of your pretty leash and collar coming towards him, it makes him smile to himself. you crawl to him with a dazed look in your eyes, ever since you the first couple of weeks of him teaching you to be a good dog you now don’t know how to function without him. you nuzzled his leg im admiration, you melted into him when he started to rub your head.

leon was the only thing that you could think of, leon was your perfect owner! he gave you everything now, belly rubs, kisses, good scratches, cuddles, everything. you just had to be good for him, that’s was it, that was all. if you were a good boy you god a happy leon, if you were a bad boy you had to stay in the basement for a month.

“such a good puppy, you’re all mine yeah?” you let out a soft noise of approval “you only think of me, right pup?” you let out another noise of approval “should i kiss you? do you think that you deserve it, pup?” you say upright and nodded frantically while letting out pathetic whimpers, he smiled at your reaction and leaned down but stopped right before your face.

“i love you, pup.”

How does one properly cook a tarantula??? I'm sorry that just snatched my attention SO fast I'm very curious.

Okay so glad you asked, more people need to know this. The problem with eating tarantulas is that the hairs are still effective even after death, so you basically put them directly over fresh embers or an open flame and burn them all off. I would do that for about two to three minutes, rotating a few times so you cook it evenly. After that, enjoy! Make sure to use some kind of condiment though, preferably a spicy dipping sauce in my experience.

He's been told the dosage makes the difference of whether it'd be a poison or a remedy—not that it mattered in Uni's case.

Our fav sea urchin is in the house! Going into a bit of fantastical elements of selkies in this AU. Research for this fic was quite fun.

For Uni's role in the crew, I really wanted to lean into the urchin aspect. As for his character, it was a bit strange to write since this is set when he newly joined the crew, so his reservations takes over most of story. Once he's sailed years with the Hearts, he's comfortable with them and his odd personality really comes out then.

I wanted to explore interesting aspects of a sea urchin so I landed on the Antarctic sea urchin and the flower urchin.

you’re so correct like I can’t believe I’m not going to suddenly switch personalities one day. what do you mean I am who I am and it’s impossible to fight that. personally I have tried to do it and the result was that I lost a lot of hair due to stress. anyway my new technique is to do whatever current me wants and hope that leads to things future me also might want, because shockingly future me IS still me. it remains to be seen how this technique will work

Anon I sympathize with your predicament! I have also tried to do that and basically the result is that every couple of years I become unable to do that, or much of anything in fact. I wish you the best of luck with your new strategy! I think people can get so carried away planning for their future ideal life that they forget they also have to live their present, less ideal life. Never hurts to take stock of your current feelings and do something about those rather than hoping they will just go away. Although at times progress slows to a crawl with this strategy it probably does keep you more invested in staying alive which is a pretty large benefit
