Tumblr media
When you woke up this morning for school, you had a terrible headache, your nose was stuffed, and every time you coughed or sneezed it made your body hurt more, so there was no way you were going to be able to go to school. Your mom helped you take some medicine and made you some soup before she left for work telling you to call her if you needed her. After you finished eating your soup, you sat it on your bedside table and covered yourself up as you fell back asleep.
Eddie was worried when he got to school and didn't see you there, because you never skipped school and you always told him if you weren't going to be at school. He tried to go about his day but it was so hard without you there and by lunch, he was straight-up miserable without you there. He walked out to his van and reached in his glove box for his walkie to see if he could get ahead of you and after trying a few times he decided to ditch and go check on him.
He pulled into your driveway and walked up to your front door knocking on your front door hoping you were there. He knocked again and that's when he heard the sound of your footsteps approaching the door, and then a few minutes you opened the door and that's when he saw you wrapped in a blanket looking absolutely miserable.
"Eds what are you doing here?" You groaned as you let him inside.
"I was worried about you sweetheart when you didn't show up at school and then you didn't answer me on the walkie." He said taking a seat on the couch next to you.
"Sorry I felt terrible this morning when I got up for school, so I took some medicine and ate some soup and then went back to sleep." You said coughing.
"Oh sweetheart, you don't have to apologize. When was the last time you took something?" He asked rubbing your back.
"A couple of hours ago before my mom left for work." You said leaning your head against the couch.
"How about I make you some soup and then you can take something?" He offered as you nodded your head before telling him where everything was.
About thirty minutes later Eddie returned with a bowl of soup in his hands and set it in front of you and ran to grab some more ginger ale real quick. He returned and sat next to you watching as you ate which included tying your hair back for you which made you smile.
"Thank you Eds, I wish I could kiss you." You pouted sadly after you finished your soup.
"Why can't you?" He asked you as he got up to go get your medicine.
"Because I'm sick and don't want you to sick." You said looking at him as he returned with your medicine.
You took your medicine and Eddie leaned down and placed a kiss on your lips much to your dismay which made him laugh as you laid your head in his lap already feeling him run his fingers through your hair.
"Thanks for taking care of me Eds." You said as you drifted asleep making Eddie smile as he placed another kiss on your forehead.

Happy Halloween! Anything full metal alchemist?
Pretending to be a boy is the easy and obvious thing to do.
Mustang already thinks she is one - apparently the paperwork he'd found on her had only called her Ed and he'd decided that was short for Edward. It's not like there was anything feminine about her while she was lying in bed trying not to bleed to death.
The military might agree to take a twelve year old boy, but will never consider the same for a twelve year old girl. It's safer, too, for people not to know what she is.
"I don't like this, Sister," Al says as she transmutes a heavy coat to wear over her thick leather pants and chunky boots. She almost cuts her hair, but their father had long hair, and she's already lost two limbs. If her hair is what gives her away, then clearly she has bigger problems.
"Remember that it's Brother once we get on the train to central," she warns.
He can't make facial expressions anymore, but the mulishness to his silence is easy for her read. She's his big sister, after all. “It’s just until we get our bodies back, Al. It’s fine.”
“Won’t it bother you to be called a boy?” he asks. “It would bother me to be called a girl.”
Yes. “Not really. It’s just temporary, and you and Winry and Granny know. It’s fine.”
Eden isn’t looking forward to it, but her brother doesn’t have his body because of her. She has to fix this, and whatever it is she has to do in service of that is what she’ll do.
~
They get to Central and meet Mustang again and his office and Maes Hughes and his very nice wife and no one even bats an eyelash at calling her a boy, or when Al calls her Brother, or at referring to her as Edward. She can at least tell them she goes by Ed, which is true.
The physical that disqualified Al might be an issue except she’s twelve and they don’t ask her to take her boxers off. Standing there shirtless feels weird, even though her chest is completely flat, but they’re more interested in her automail than in questioning her gender.
She’s dubbed the Edward Elric, the Fullmetal Alchemist, and the victory is bittersweet for more than one reason.
~
Sometimes, in the beginning, when they’re far from central she’ll take down her hair and transmute a dress and just go out and be a girl for a little bit. Soon, that becomes too risky, because she’s so well known, because Al makes her identity obvious.
Al stops calling her Sister except when they’re in a room alone and she tells herself it doesn’t bother her.
When she’s fourteen, the jokes about her voice not having dropped yet start at around the same time as she starts having to bind her chest to keep it looking flat. The baggy jacket worked for a while, but now she needs an extra step. She’s fifteen when she really starts to hate it, when her chest is large enough that flattening them constricts her movements and makes it so she can’t expand her lungs fully. It’s too much of liability. She wears a sports bra and gets a baggy tank top and saves the binding for when she has to report into Mustang.
Nearly three years of no one guessing anything and then they’re in Liore when Rose takes one look at her and says, “I thought the Fullmetal Alchemist was a boy?”
“I am a boy,” she says, but it comes out awkwardly, because she’s never had to say that before, never had to try and convince someone before. There’s a little spark of pleasure at Rose just looking at her and knowing, but it’s drowned out by the terror at the possibility of being found out.
Rose frowns, but then her face clears as an embarrassed flush rushes across her face. “Oh! I didn’t know that you were – uh, right. Sorry, I – yes, um, of course, you are definitely a boy. My apologies!”
Wait, that’s not what she – oh fuck, whatever. It amounts to the same thing, she supposes.
Then she’s too busy chasing after this fake priest and Rose is furious at her and Ed is pretty sure she’s going to get murdered by this whole town at one point, but it works out, more or less. The town is sort of a mess, but there’s no more fake priest offering false hope and false gods, so that has to be good, right?
Rose is tear stained and empty and she’d known that Ed was a girl. “Hey,” Ed says softly, “it’s going to be okay. You can rebuild.”
“Rebuild what?” she hiccups, trying to contain her sobs. “We’re in the middle of nowhere and no one cares about us and without those miracles, fake or not, people will be hungry!”
Fuck. This isn’t Ed’s problem. But she wants to help. She wants to help Rose, who’s nice, and pretty, and saw her. “What if there was a river around the city? Then you wouldn’t be in the middle of nowhere and you could grow something or catch fish, or whatever.”
“The river isn’t anywhere near here!” she shouts.
“It could be,” she says and now Rose is staring at her and Al is sighing.
She’s the Fullmetal Alchemist. What’s one river?
She and Al take the train to the nearest branch of the river, marking off what they’ll do on the map and debating circles and Al doesn’t say a word about this being a waste of time, but he wouldn’t. He’s usually the bleeding heart between them.
They buy two boats, split up to each take it to a bend in the river that almost no one uses, and get to work. It takes almost two weeks to push the new bit of the river near Liore and she meets Al in the middle, the two of them connecting the new river right outside of city gates.
They go back to Liore, to tell Rose and everyone else what they’ve done, and they find something they hadn’t expected.
That damn priest is back.
The ensuring fight nearly kills her and she was certain it actually would, but the strange creature literally slithers away from her rather than killing her. It at least proves to the people that that thing isn’t a prophet, although it does leave a large portion of the town destroyed.
They can rebuild closer to the river anyway.
Ed is broken and bruised and Rose is tending to her and she tries not to think how she’s going to write any of this up in a report.
“What’s the river called?” Rose asks as she checks on the stitches she’d made. She’s not as good as Winry, but she’s not bad either.
Ed bites her lip to distract herself from the pain of disinfectant on her wounds then says, “What? I don’t know. Whatever you want.”
“You made it,” she says stubbornly. “You should name it.”
“It doesn’t matter,” she insists, wincing as Rose rubs some sort of salve into her many bruises, sliding her hand beneath her sports bra to get the one that’s all along her side and her ribs. She’s probably broken at least one. Then, without thinking, “Eden. Call it the Eden River.”
Someone should at least get to use her name if she can’t.
Rose pauses, staring at her, and Ed looks down rather than meeting her gaze. “Ed,” she says gently, “please don’t take this the wrong way, and I promise I won’t ask again, but – are you a boy?”
She should say yes. Even though Rose had guessed right the first time, she should say yes, and protect the same secret she’s been protecting for the past four years.
But it’s been a really long couple of weeks.
“I’m what I have to be,” she says, shrugging even though it hurts.
Rose smiles at her, warm and pretty and ugh, why does she have to be so pretty? This is so unfair. “In this room, all you have to be is yourself, Eden.”
She can’t help but return Rose’s smile. She hasn’t been able to be herself in a long time.
~
Ed is sixteen and has just received a summons from Mustang, who apparently hadn’t been satisfied with her initial report of Liore and had finally tracked her down after months of dodging him to demand she return to Central, which is annoying as shit. She’s finally found some books that even sort of explain what that creature in Liore was, and now he wants her to come back? What a waste of time.
“Um, Sister,” Al says and Ed automatically looks around, but they’re completely alone in this corner of the library, “do you think, now that you’re enlistment age, that you might tell them truth?”
She stares. “Why would I do that?”
“Well, we haven’t been back in a long time, and you look a lot – especially this past year, you know?” She continues staring, because she does not know. “Most people see what they expect to see, but you might have to – I don’t know, do something, if you don’t want them getting suspicious.”
“Why would they be suspicious?” she demands, baffled.
Al groans and throws up his hands. “Because you’re older and you look like a girl, Sister! You’re not a kid anymore, and they’ve known us for years, and they pay attention to stuff.”
This is a serious problem that she has to deal with.
Which she’ll do as soon as she can make herself stop smiling.

Thinking about Ed and Al and themes of appearances/body vs maturity...
Thinking about how young Ed probably looked as a state alchemist at 12, especially given how small he is at his age, especially next to Al. How annoyed he always is at people underestimating him or calling him short. How sometimes the facade breaks a bit and you can see that the annoyance is partly exaggerated on his part (see: Ed laughing along with Elisa when she comments about his height. Pinako basically going "wow he doesn't get the joke huh :/" when Armstrong takes issue with Ed yelling at Pinako for calling him short). The "you have to grow up some time" thing with Psiren and how she goes back and forth between talking about Ed like a child vs an adult to be creepy and he has no real idea how to react and by the end of the episode is still uncertain/doesn't conceptualize how gross she was being. Nina at 12 vs Marcoh at 15; "I may not have grown an inch since then but I can't let my heart stay stunted!"
Al's height and how big and "imposing" he's looked since he was 10 and how people so often treat him more like an adult than Edward. The scene in Resembool where young Winry is gawking at Al's new form. "Brother, am I scary?" on the train to Central, where Al wanted to become a state alchemist to help Ed but couldn't take on that role due to the form he was in. Nina asking if Al's armor is heavy and him saying it's ok because he's strong. Al being mistaken for Ed's father and Ed being amused about it. Mustang and co mocking Ed and calling him childish after the fight with Scar, and Ed being unhappy but Al rejoicing at being treated like a child, in his eyes for the first time since he got his armor. (The idea of being a child is being associated both with protection/not everything being on you and a lack of autonomy). Al awkwardly apologizing to Rose/Ross+Brosh/etc for Ed's immaturity because being falsely assumed to be in a more adult position makes him feel obligated to act like he is (the Fullmetal Alchemist must protect his little brother; no one seems to know which one the Fullmetal Alchemist is)
Ed making a point of staying quiet during his automail attachment when most adults apparently scream because at least he has a human body, unlike Al; each Elric brother wanting to get the other's body back first because each feels responsible for the other's state, even though Al's condition is far more grave (both see maturity/taking responsibility as nearly indistinguishable from self-sacrifice?) (Reflected also in Ed trading his arm for Al in the first place?)
The scene where Ed accidentally hits Al in the face with a teacup, and because Al doesn't have expressions/can't feel it, for a second you wonder if he'll just brush it off, until you hear the distress in his voice. The way before Ed can really acknowledge this or apologize Ross comes in and calls Ed a child (just like her first impression of him by appearance that he wants to surpass) as a way of criticizing his denial about the stone (as such implying that Al in opposing him was modeling what it was to be an adult/authority; her first impression of him by appearance). And Ed relents while Al stays quiet in the background for the rest of the scene. (How this probably further reinforced the "being childlike is when you burden people and maturity is when you get hurt in another's name" thing in both brothers' minds)
(I'm just noticing Themes here more than trying to be coherent; I'm nowhere near done with my rewatch yet so I know for a fact that there are other parts to this I haven't gotten to yet)

what’s you’re favourite time of whump with the elric boys? ⭐️
What a lovely ask! Great to get the gears turning.
So canonically, whumping Al is…difficult. I simply can’t make the solid metal boy hurt—he’s gotta be human and therefore vulnerable.
Post-promised day scenarios are perfect for that—after getting his body back, Al will experience an untold number of painful problems. From trouble eating, breathing, swallowing, to physical therapy, to compromised immunities, to mental issues due to soul/body separation…the possibilities are quite endless. The boy needs to cry and whimper and work out his nerve endings.
Ed can be angsting by his side, working through his guilt over causing this, or simply holding him all the way through, whispering coarse encouragements and apologies.
For Ed, the time immediately following the transmutation is a wonderful time to explore his pain. The boy has lost two limbs! Traumatically, I might add! That hurts! Not that he’d like to let that show—but he can’t hide everything. He’s eleven.
Al, while not able to feel any pain himself, ought to resonate with Ed’s suffering, since he probably feels partially responsible for it. I can just imagine those gigantic, clumsy gloves stroking Ed’s sweaty feverish forehead while he whimpers, halfway between sleep and waking but always in pain. I like to imagine he feels phantom sensations—his toes itching, or a stray hair caught on the back of his hand.
The boys getting sick when they’re little tickles me in a specific way—and depending on whether or not Trisha is still with them, she can tend to them, or they can tend to each other. Small and sniffly and confined to bed (little Ed would LOVE that). I am struck suddenly by the memory of a chapter of Little House on the Prairie where the entire family comes down with malaria, and how much I loved reading that chapter.
I have some heavier scenarios that I’ll put under a cut—warnings for…me being a sadist? And also…well. You know. 😉
I’ve said nothing yet about someone else deliberately hurting the boys, but come on. The possibilities are endless there, too!
Say they get captured. Tortured for information. Obviously the quickest way to get information out of them would be to torture one in front of the other. The only way to make his pain go away is if you give me what I want, little alchemist.
I can see it either way—Ed would grit his teeth and spit obscenities into his torturer’s face to hide how much it hurts, but Al knows his brother too well for that. He’d watch with tears silently streaming down his face, determined to do as Ed says: Don’t tell them anything, Al. But I think he caves when they cut off a piece of his little finger. He’s already lost limbs once. He doesn’t need to lose any more.
If it were Al under the knife, he’d be a lot worse at hiding his pain—he’s as tough as Ed, but if we’re doing a post-armor scenario, he hasn’t had as much experience playing through the pain. His cries would be high and wrenching and often. I don’t think Ed would last very long listening to his brother be hurt on purpose.
I’ve also written some AU scenarios that are almost purely whump—the vampire!Al AU, in which Al survives solely by drinking Ed’s blood for four years while they search for the stone. The whump goes both ways here: Ed from the constant bloodletting, and Al from the ways anemia affects him when he doesn’t get enough to eat.
⚠️Noncon warning for this next one⚠️
I’ve also written an AU piece where Kimblee uses one of his Philosopher’s Stones to restore Al’s body in Baschool, instead of fighting Ed and blowing up the mineshaft. His motive is leverage, at first—a delicate, human Al is much better bargaining material than an unfeeling suit of armor. Then Kimblee decides to…have a little fun with him. Explore his body. Wring some pleasure out of it. It gets dark, very dark—especially when Ed shows up to rescue Al but is captured and forced to watch.
Okay, the last scenario I have isn’t physical whump, but more…psychological. And just angsty. In a world where Ed and Al are in a romantic relationship, not everyone is bound to react well. The cruel part of me wants the people closest to them to react…very badly.
Suppose Winry catches them kissing and is very hurt by it. She tells Pinako, who is…surprisingly blasé about it. (come on. She’s known these boys since they were born. She saw this coming.) So instead, Winry goes to their boss. Mustang takes dire measures to keep the boys apart (how could Ed do this to his little brother?)
I’m imagining the boys being apart for months, begging the military adults to let them see one another. Writing heartfelt letters to each other, which after a while they realize aren’t getting sent.
⚠️Self harm⚠️
Maybe, after so long like this, one of them sees no way out. Maybe they’d let brother come to the hospital to see him. Or his funeral.

Fullmetal Alchemist Chapter 44 part 1
This chapter is secretly a mythology info-dump.
At the conclusion of Ed's investigation, he wanted to give a proper burial for the remains of his creation. He understands it's not his mother, but he still feels guilty that he made something only for it to suffer and die. It's the least he can do as an apology.
Now that Ed's been able to recontextualize what happened on that day, he's starting to gather information to form a new hypothesis. After confirming with Pinako that he and Al are Trisha's genetic children, Ed just says he was correct about the soul but still failed. He reaches out to Izumi about her attempt at human transmutation but she hangs up.
He and Pinako visit the Rockbells' graves. Ed tells Pinako about the people he met and likely passes their thanks to them. He hides how one of their patients killed them though.
Tumblr media
The image wasn't detailed enough for me to read the names on the gravestones, but the FMA wiki says the husband is Urey and the wife is Sarah. With that info, I could make out the writing does roughly match for Urey, but the wife seems to be spelled "Sala" instead.
Pinako tells Ed to tell Hohenheim Trisha's last words "I couldn't keep our promise."
I love the background bit started in chapter 42 where the hotel manager is getting increasingly annoyed with how Al and Winry can't pay their hotel bill because Ed is away. He's more happy to see Ed than Winry is and I'm so glad he's finally going to get paid.
Tumblr media
Ed's reaction to Al's condition after the Super Heist as well as seeing Lin and Lan Fan freeloading off him AGAIN is appropriate.
And now we get Ed building a new hypothesis. The details he and Al go over:
Humans consist of body, soul, and spirit
The spirit connects the body and soul
The body and soul are naturally drawn to each other
Al has memories from before the transmutation that Ed does not, and Winry can confirm they're true; meaning Al's soul is the real thing
Alphonse can still form new memories which means his brain must still be functional somewhere
Al saw his body being taken from him on that day and his soul was dumped into the body Ed and Al created.
That last point was an unexpected detail for Ed.
But Al's soul exists in the living realm and Ed was able to pull it in and bind it. That wouldn't be possible if Al had died during the Transmutation so his body is somewhere.
Then Izumi calls them and provides a second data point which aligns with Ed's experience. Human Transmutation cannot bring a person back to life, and Death completely cuts one off from the living realm.
Izumi made a family lineage tree when she wanted to confirm if she had transmuted her child and I just want to point out how lopsided the information was. One tree goes back three generations and includes a great-aunt or uncle. The other is just the parents.
I don't know if I'd rather assume Izumi has an expansive family history while Sig's just like "My parents moved here and never said nothing about their families", or if I'd rather assume Sig comes from a close-knit clan that's run that butchery for generations while Izumi was a rebellious child who ran away from home the first chance she got.
Tumblr media
Al and Izumi both take the news the way Ed did. They acknowledge what they did was wrong, but they weren't responsible for killing someone they loved. Like Ed, they can truly move forward.
Tumblr media
Ed and Al have a heart-to-heart about how to move forward. Ed's standing on the stairs causing them to be eye-to-eye and speak as equals.
Tumblr media
They no longer have to be on this journey as some act of penance. They did something wrong, but they didn't kill their mother. And Ed doesn't have to feel guilty for what's happened to Al. Despite what Al is, they've met other people whose bodies aren't fully human. And even though Al has a limited time until his soul is rejected by his armor body, it's no different from how people will die suddenly.
No more guilt. No more shame. No more repentance. They can stop. There is no longer anything forcing them to move forward against their will.
But Ed would like to one day see Al's smiling face and Al wants to stop being alone through the night. So even though they could stop their journey without regrets, they're moving forward because now they want to do it. And they finally have an idea of how to reach their goals.
Ed's entire demeanor has changed. He walks with a greater confidence and Winry notices.
Tumblr media
When they started their journey, Ed and Al likely thought they'd need to perform a correct Human Transmutation to restore Al's body. They sought the Philosopher's Stone thinking it was needed to pull that off. But now they have a completely different understanding. They won't need to rebuild Al's body. It still exists somewhere. So even though they're starting over, they're already closer than they've ever been because they can be certain they can find Al's body.
I got too into drama-posting. There's still more to this chapter and I haven't gotten to all my thoughts and details on it. And I promised a discussion on the chronology thing too.
I'm just going to make a part 2.

Fullmetal Alchemist Time Travel Part 3
When Edward gets home, Al is excited to tell him about all that he’d learned from their dad’s study and Ed realizes that there is still one more problem that needs to be solved. He sits Al down and tells him that he had discovered a down side during his research of human transmutation. Whenever someone attempts it, there is a cost. A terrible cost that isn’t worth it and that there is no way for them to bring their mom back. Alphonse is confused and upset that Ed is ‘giving up’ when they had been planning this for so long. Ed then gets upset and grips Al’s arms trying to tell him about the horrors of human transmutation and that the cost isn’t worth it. He describes it as something out of a nightmare. A horror Al can’t even imagine and that people have died trying to do the impossible. Then he makes Al promise him he won’t try it and Al looks into his brothers eyes and sees that he’s serious and says he won’t.
Ed believes him and calms down (Al was a bit shaken). The next few weeks Al avoids Ed and he thinks that his brother is still upset about not bringing their mom back. Still, Edward knows that this is better than the alternative (and thinks about the years of agony his brother had to go through unable to feel anything) he tries to spend as much time with Al as he can, making breakfast (burning things a bit but he’s better than he was before despite his short size making the task more difficult) and they hear good news that the war had ended (although everyone else thinks it was a massacre) and that the Rockbells will be returning soon. Every night he studies the philosophers stone and tries to sense the souls within as well as apologizes on behalf of his people for what they’ve done to the ishvalans, to them, and even apologizing for using the stone. He might even talk to the stone about all kinds of things and always treats it with the utmost respect. Then, one day, he hears a strange noise from the basement and goes to investigate.
He wasn’t sure what woke him up but he woke up with a strange feeling as if something was wrong and thought he heard shuffling downstairs despite not knowing why Al would be up at this time. As he’s descending the stairs he can hear the crackle of energy from the use of alchemy and gets a cold feeling. He starts running down the stairs and makes it in time to see Al in front of a very familiar transmutation circle and a pan of something gray he knows was the recipe for a human body. Unfortunately the transmutation had already begun and he came just in time to see dark hands reach for Al’s body and disintegrate everything they touched. Ed ran forward trying to reach his brother who turned to him with fear filled eyes but in the next moment he was gone. Ed didn’t stop to think and pressed his hands on the still active transmutation circle. Ed enters the realm of Truth who mocks how
this was ironic since it brought back memories as this was the first time they originally met. Ed tells Truth to shut it and to give his brother back. Truth says that Al had already paid the price for the transmutation so it couldn’t be stopped and Ed says to then just take his gate like last time but then Truth stops smiling and says no. Ed is speechless for a few seconds and then screams “WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO?!” Ed might make some big deal about equivalent exchange and Truth says that is how it normally works but only if he accepts the price (he as in Truth). He normally doesn’t care what humans do or exchange but Ed (Truth calls him Edward) needs his alchemy in order to change things so he refuses to accept it. Ed is overwhelmed by horror and Truth goes on to mention how he can just seal his brother’s soul into that piece of armor like last time but Ed clenches his fist and screams that he refuses to trap his brother in that cage ever again. To make his brother suffer when this was supposed to be a second chance. Truth studies Ed for a bit and then says that there is another option. He’s only telling Ed since he refused to accept the gate, it’s only fair he gives a solution. Currently, his brother’s soul in within the being that he created, an unstable human body. But Ed has all he needs to turn that body into a true homunculus (I don’t want Truth to outright say it. Maybe he says Ed can fix that body or make it livable). He has a humanoid body, his brother is in that body, and he currently has a philosophers stone in his possession.
That’s when Ed realizes what Truth is saying, he wants to turn Al into a homunculus or at least transfer his soul into a homunculus’s body. Truth says that it is possible however, even with the philosophers stone to keep the body alive, he will need to give up some of his own blood and flesh to fix the body and make it livable. The philosopher's stone will only keep him alive. Ed thinks it over and realizes that if it was a homunculus’s body, Al could sleep and eat and feel and even grow just like King Bradley but there was one problem. Ed had taken the philosophers stone out of his pocket and studied it. He couldn’t just use other people’s souls without justification. However, while he was in Truth’s realm he was able to communicate with them which he noticed almost immediately that he could feel their souls. He then summons those souls and bows his head, begging them for their permission to do this and to save his brother. He says that if even one of them doesn’t consent, he won’t do it. He sees the thousands of Ishvalan people and one steps forward. He says that they know that Edward is a kind person. He had freed them from the man who was using their souls to hurt their people and then used them to save their people which they have no regrets of. Ed never used them since and had always treated them with the utmost care. They could hear him apologizing almost every night and knew he wasn’t a bad person. They agreed to let their souls be used to help his brother and Ed bows his head and cries tears as he thanks them. Truth, who had been watching the whole thing, then let’s Ed go and Ed appears back in the transmutation circle. (He was just visiting truth and didn’t actually sacrifice anything just like how he uses the teleportation) and looks up to see the same abomination as last time. He had to swallow down his vomit because this time he knows that his brother's soul is in the creature and it makes it more obvious when he reaches out a hand to Ed and whispers in a voice barely heard “bro…ther…..hu…rts.” (and it reminds Ed of a little girl that had become a chimera). Ed scrambles to Al’s side and tries to calm him down saying soothing words like it’s alright, he’ll make the pain stop. Everything was going to be alright. Then he clapped his hand together and pressed them on both sides of his brother's head and pressed their foreheads together. The blue light of alchemy crackles around him and he can feel Al’s body changing as he uses his own flesh and blood. Ironically, he can feel the exact same arm and leg he lost last time disappearing, truth has a cruel sense of humor. He can feel Truth’s presence as the process is going and hear it’s laughter. He can also feel the philosophers stone merging with Alphonse on his back, right where the soul array was last time for the armor. (And that’s where his ouroboros tattoo appears). When it’s all done, Al is looking back at Ed, looking the same as before except completely naked, he looks up at his brother in thanks for making the pain stop before he realizes that Ed was swaying. Ed is still trying to whisper reassurances as the pain and blood loss from his two missing limbs causes him to fall unconscious.
Alphonse Elric had been upset when his brother told them they couldn’t perform human transmutation even if there was a cost. Al knew that in alchemy, it was always about equivalent exchange and when Ed gave examples of lost limbs, sight, and organs, and that people could die, Al thought that as long as they got their mother back, it didn’t matter what he had to sacrifice, especially when their mom was there and could make everything better afterwards. He also didn’t think his brother knew what he was talking about. Sure, Edward had been on a journey to research human transmutation but he didn’t even look at the book in their fathers study before saying it was impossible. And usually Ed was the one to do something reckless but this was their mom. So Alphonse lied to his brother for the first time in his life when he promised his brother he wouldn’t try it. It made him feel guilty, especially with the relief that shone in his brother's eyes which were frantic a few moments before but he squashed it down. He created everything he needed in the basement and when he was finally ready, he preformed the human transmutation late in the night. However, it didn’t go like he expected. Strange hands came up and started grabbing at him, disintegrating anything they touched. He heard feet running down the stairs and turned to see his brother screaming his name. Al tried to reach for him but it was too late and the next moment he was gone.
When he woke up, he was on the floor in extreme pain, looking at his brother. He tried to reach out but there was something wrong with his limbs. They were black and deformed and every movement hurt. He tried to tell his brother, begging him to make the pain go away. He was sorry, this wasn’t what he wanted, he was so sorry. Ed rushed to him and did something with his hands, it was hard to think through the pain. He felt two small warm hands on his face and heard his brother say everything was alright and Al believed him. He felt something warm spread through his body and felt it change. It hurt a bit but after a while he found that the pain was going away and that it was easier to breathe, to think. He turned to his brother to thank him but then noticed something off. His brother’s face was covered in sweat and his skin was paler than usual. His eyes were glassy as if filled with pain and when he started swaying, Al panicked and cried his name.
That’s when he noticed the blood. He noticed how his brother’s arm and leg were gone and there was so much blood, he didn’t know what to do. He tried to stop the bleeding but there was so much blood and his hands weren’t very big. He grabbed his clothes that were nearby, only barely noticing that he wasn’t wearing any, and wrapped his brother’s limbs the best he could. Then he prepared to pick Ed up to take him to their neighbors and was surprised to find out that Ed was lighter than he expected, in fact he barely weighed anything. And although Al found that strange, he wasn’t complaining (unless the loss of weight was due to blood loss. Could someone become lighter without their fluids? Was this bad?) and he ran to the Rockbell’s house (Winry’s house) and knocked on the door. It was a strange sight for Pinko to open the door to. Alphonse, butt naked in the middle of the night carrying his older brother bridle style as if he didn't weigh a thing while Edward was bleeding out from two missing limbs and Alphonse was clearly crying. She didn’t hesitate to let them in and began surgery on Edward to try and save his life. This is similar to what Ling went through with Alphonse sitting in a chair outside listening to his brother's screams (even if he’s done this before, it doesn’t make it any easier) and keeps apologizing in his head over and over.
While Ed is recovering, Alphonse discovers a few things about his body. First off, he learns that he is stronger and faster than before, something he vaguely thought was strange when he effortlessly picked up his big brother bridal style but wasn’t really focused on. He tests out his body and it feels lighter and stronger than before. He also got a new pair of clothes and while he was changing, he saw the strange tattoo on his back between the shoulder blades in the mirror. He did this by testing a few fighting moves their teacher taught them and lifting up a few objects, he accidentally hit a boulder or tree and smashed it, cutting himself. Second, Alphonse realized that his wounds heal. When he scratched his hand, there was the sparks of alchemy except red instead of blue, and suddenly the wound was healed. He tested it out by sneaking a knife and cutting himself (hesitating of course because he’s still a kid) but it healed the same way (he stopped testing after that since it still hurt). And third, he hears voices in his head. They aren't harmful, it’s more like he can feel their emotions. They are amused about him freaking out at his new strength, worried when he feels worried about his brother, and he feels like there are multiple presences within him. As if he’s full of life. When he asks or tells Edward about it he explains that he used a philosophers stone to make Alphonse a homunculus. He then tells Al what a philosophers stone is and then explains how he asked the souls within for their permission before he used them, that’s why they feel calm and their emotions are what Alphonse is feeling. After that, Al makes it his goal to get to know the souls within the stone just like their father did (not that he knows it). Edward guides him through it to the best of his abilities.
Alphonse eventually starts a ritual where everyday he spends some time meditating and talking with the souls within the stone, communicating with them in some way and then honors them and their country before starting his day. The souls appreciate it even though it isn’t necessary. Anyways, that all happens later, right now, Colonel Mustang received reports (I think he’s only a lieutenant Colonel at this point though) about a brilliant young alchemist living in Risembool and came to check it out. He finds the basement and the transmutation circle with blood covering the floor (the body actually became Alphonse so Pinako didn’t see it when she went to check, only the sheer amount of blood left). And he goes to find the Elric brothers. Roy Mustang sees Edward with half his limbs gone in a wheelchair and grabs him by the collar,  asking what he’s done. Alphonse sees this and then grabs the colonel’s arm in a grip that is much stronger than what a child should have and tells him to let his brother go. Alphonse is crying at this point and saying how it wasn’t him despite Edward telling Al to stay quiet. Al ignores him and says he was the one who tried to attempt human transmutation and his brother paid the price. They sit down and explain everything. They say how they had been preparing for human transmutation for years, researching  and gathering what they needed. (Maybe Ed had actually created the array before he went back in time and Alphonse used the formula Ed created despite Ed no longer wanting to use it. And the reason he didn’t finish up last time was for double checking his work and more research just in case. Or maybe to gather materials). Anyways, they had been preparing for it and then one day, Ed discovered why human transmutation was forbidden and tried to stop it before they could try. Alphonse explains how he warned him about the cost and that it really was impossible.
But Alphonse didn’t believe him and was frustrated in his brother who was trying to stop despite them being so close. So he didn’t heed his brother's warning and decided to go through with it. But it went wrong. Al’s body was taken and some kind of creature was created instead that his soul was forced into. All he remembers is pain. Edward had come down when he heard the noise and saw what happened. He somehow figured out that Al had become that thing (although he never told Al or anyone else what it looked like)  The body was dying, Al could feel it, so Ed then did his own human transmutation to sacrifice his limbs and fix the body Al’s soul was in and turned him into a homunculus to save his life. When they finish the story, Colonel Mustang is shocked for multiple reasons. Not only was Ed able to create a transmutation circle, he also was advanced enough to successfully create a living homunculus. Something that was thought to be impossible yet was standing in front of him (Al might demonstrate his abilities like increased strength and healing. As well as the ouroboros tattoo on his back that appeared). Mustang might make a comment on how this was a scientific breakthrough never seen before but before he could continue his monologue, Ed stops him saying how his brother wasn’t a science experiment (something Colonel Mustang said might have implied people coming to research Alphonse. Maybe he said that if people knew then Ed would be offered thousands of dollars in order to research Al). Mustang apologises and says how he was just talking to himself. After that he asks Ed if he would like to join the military. He lists multiple reasons. For one, he will eventually need money to support him and his brother since they clearly don’t have any parents present. Pinako might make a fuss about how the Rockbells can support them. And another reason is that if it is brought to light that Alphonse is a homunculus, the military might try to confiscate him but if Ed was a part of the military then Alphonse would fall under his protection and he would gain certain rights to him. Right now he is just a kid with no way to protect Al.
Ed understands. He was going to join the military anyways since he needed to be close to them in order to foil their plans or even learn what their plans are and have access to restricted items. The fact that he needed to protect his brother and his identity wasn’t something new but at least this time his brother wasn’t trapped in a body that couldn’t feel. When Roy Mustang left, Edward immediately asked for auto mail. They said that the recovery could take three to four years but Ed said that he would do it on one despite Pinako saying that he would be coughing up blood. Ed didn’t care and proceeded to do the same thing as last time during his recovery except now, Alphonse had his body back and every time he thought about that and saw Al sleeping or eating, and realized that he wouldn’t have to go through the years of numbness and sleepless nights all alone, Ed thought that his lack of limbs was worth it. What he didn’t realize is that Alphonse was still suffering. He blamed himself for his brother’s current condition and it was hard for him to watch Edward struggling to stand or pushing his body so hard he coughed up blood. It was hard to sleep at night because he woke up from nightmares yet his new body never let him show it. Alphonse believes that it was his fault and no one else’s that he and his brother ended up the way they were despite Edward always saying that it was his idea to do human transmutation and he was the one who created the array.
Alphonse still only thinks it’s his own fault as his brother warned him and he didn’t listen. (I am debating whether or not Alphonse will have some sort of ability like the other homunculi like maybe an ultimate shield like Greed has and it resembles his armor. Or maybe he can just use alchemy to make an armor. I think that Alphonse will keep his memories this time around as he never really lost consciousness after possessing the body). Anyways, after the year of recovering and getting used to his new auto mail, Edward applies to be a state alchemist at 12 and succeeds. He doesn’t do the exact same thing as last time (as in threaten King Bradley with a spear) but he does show off his ability to use alchemy without a transmutation circle. He debated whether or not to do so but figured that he wouldn’t be able to fight without his ability and it’s such a part of him that it will be basically instinct and the military will find out eventually. This would eventually make the military suspicious why and he figured it was just better to reveal part of his hand. Anyways, Edward joins the military just like last time (maybe he put on a bit of a show this time using his alchemy) and received the title of fullmetal alchemist due to his metal arm and leg just like last time. (One of the only good things since the name kind of grew on Ed). Just like last time, Alphonse doesn’t become a state alchemist but this is mostly due to the fact that Ed wants to keep him out of the military's sight as much as possible. He still travels everywhere with his brother.
As time goes on, Alphonse grows pretty tall, taller than his brother (since Ed is technically still supplying nutrients to two bodies although I might change that if Ed cuts the connection or if he used Alphons’s body to create the new homunculus body). Alphonse also gains muscle just like his brother and people recognize both of them pretty easily due to their golden hair and eyes which is uncommon. I might do something where Ed and Al go to Dublith to visit their teacher and run into greed who basically adopts them. Edward might still be recovering during this time but he has to tell their teacher about her kid and what they’ve done and Alphonse is still rife with guilt. (Maybe the ishvalan siblings, Scar and his brother, also travel in order to get auto mail for the older brother. He would also reprint the tattoos on his body/automail. Probably do so for Scar too. So both of them can technically do transmutation without circles to).

How would either Yandere Edward Elric or Yandere Alphonse Elric deal with their darling getting pregnant? Would they become worse once they find out they have a child on the way or would they be more lenient because of pregnancy hormones?
I think this depends on if they're separate yanderes or share the darling, so I'll write my thoughts on those situations. Content Warnings: Contains mentions of kidnapping, referenced past non-con, discusses darling not wanting a child, general yandere mindset, isolation, slight mind break, mention of attempted suicide, mentions of mother/child death in labor, mentions of a dead child, mentions of non-con, and mentions of amputation (transmutation). This is a yandere work. Please proceed with caution and keep your triggers in mind when reading. This is set after the end of the series when both brothers have their whole bodies back.

Al is generally a very sweet person and doesn’t like to hurt anyone.
Especially not someone he cares about as much as he cares about you!
When he finds out that you’re pregnant he is over the MOON!
You’re gonna be an absolutely amazing mother -- just like his was!
If you thought Al was possessive, overprotective, and smothering before -- you’ve seen nothing yet.
You’re lucky if you even get to go to the bathroom alone.
Al will spend every second of every minute of every hour of every day next to you.
He can’t risk your child getting hurt, after all.
And despite his loving and caring, if you do anything at all that could put your child at risk, he would have zero tolerance for that.
His punishments would obviously not be anything that could hurt the child, such as not giving you any food.
But if you had even the slightest freedom before, that will be stripped from you in just a second.
You’ll be chained to the bed for weeks at a time unable to stand up or do anything, just resting on your back with a constant stream of pleas and apologies spilling from your lips.
You won’t ever do anything like that again, just please please please don’t let him keep you here anymore!
You’ll be good! You won’t complain about his doting or anything!
Just please let him take you on a walk again like he used to!
Or let you sit in the armchair and read!
ANYTHING but this!

Ed is kind of a wild card. Depending on the situation, he’s either kind or shows no mercy.
When he realizes that he’s finally gotten you pregnant, he will be insufferable, but in a different way from Al.
Instead of taking you away from the world, and spending every second with you, he will be controlling.
He will take you on walks to show you off to others when your belly starts to show because he loves to remind people that you’re undeniably his.
You will also not be allowed to do anything that could hurt you or your child.
Some things are understandable, like forbidding you from lifting heavy things, but the further along your pregnancy goes, the more ridiculous his demands will be.
In the end, you won’t be able to even hold a book and read it by yourself, because what if you dropped it on your belly and either you or the baby got hurt? Let Ed read it for you instead!
And if you try to escape or do something to hurt yourself or the baby because you don’t want his child any trace of the kindness Edward has generally shown during your pregnancy will be gone.
If you try to get rid of the child, he will treat you like a human incubator until he deems you apologetic enough. You’ll be isolated except for when he walks in to check on your bindings or force-feed you to keep the baby healthy, your pleas for him to let you go or even look at or please talk to you again falling on deaf ears.
Not until you’ve spent weeks virtually alone, pleading and begging and throwing promise after promise at Ed will he finally relent, asking if you’re gonna try anything like that again?
With tears of relief at finally being talked to again, you’ll vigorously shake your head doing your best not to throw yourself into his arms the very second you’re untied.
You can’t risk hurting your child, after all.

Now both brothers in combination would be interesting, to say the least.
In some situations, Ed, being the eldest, would have Al tag along, even though it wouldn’t be something Al would have originally chosen to do.
That’s how it’s been their whole “relationship” with you -- Ed being more active and Al more passive, usually tagging along because he’s just happy to have you.
When they realize you’re pregnant, there’s an unspoken agreement between them.
They’re both the fathers and that’s that.
They won’t leave any room for potential dispute or discourse between them now that their family will grow.
Ed and Al want to be the best fathers to their child -- far better than their own, and they just know you’ll be the perfect mother!
When both of them are yandere at the same time, I see Ed as the overly possessive one.
Just as in his own headcanons, he’d make sure nothing could hurt you and your baby and Al’s caring, overbearing demeanor would be infectious.
So you’d have both of them and their tendencies rubbing off on each other and having two overbearing, overprotective brothers to deal with.
Al would be the more relaxed one of the two and a little more lenient, sometimes letting you make the bed when Ed was out on a mission, giving you small things to do.
And when Al was gone, Ed would not let you out of his sight, but take you outside on short walks, something Al would never do.
So in a way, you supposed you were a bit grateful that the two of them weren’t there all of the time. Both had annoying qualities that got on your nerves more than ever while being pregnant, but at least the respective brother had something they allowed you to do when you were with just them.
They’ll be the worst at the start of and towards the end of the pregnancy when everything is new, and then when it’s almost time for them to become fathers.
Any attempts from you at a makeshift abortion early on will be stopped immediately, and if you try to hurt the child, they will be extra cruel and overbearing until you’re too pregnant for a “normal” abortion to work -- keeping you chained up.
But they will be weirdly lenient when you’re in the last month, even if you’d try to hurt your stomach somehow. Of course you’re scared now that it’s so close, but don’t worry you’ll be a wonderful mother, and the two of them will be there to help and support you, always!
If you try something drastic the last few weeks like jumping out of a window because you don’t want this. You’ve never wanted this! They will still be more lenient, but keep you chained to the bed for your safety. This close to giving birth the hormones would definitely be messing with your head.
They’ll keep you here until you give birth and those thoughts will vanish soon for sure.
Edward and Alphonse love you so much and love the addition to your family and will do anything in their power to make sure you carry to term.
And if such a tragedy would happen that either you or the child don’t survive the birth, they will be devastated.
If you’re the one who dies, finally escaping them through death with a weak smile on your lips, they will dedicate their everything to the child. The grief of losing you will never go away, but at least they have part of you left in their child, and they will make sure the child never leaves this world too early.
If, however, the child dies or is stillborn, the brothers will be devastated and try to do the ritual to bring the child back. They’ve lost limbs and their body once before and if that’s what it takes to get your child back alive, they will give that up again.
But of course, it doesn’t work as the link with the God and the forbidden alchemy have been severed.
Instead, they will mourn their child desperately, and bury it.
Then, they will try their very best to impregnate you again. As many times as it takes for them to finally get a child.
And during your next pregnancy, absolutely nothing will be left up to chance.

What bothers me about Mei is that she never even tried to get to know Ed as a person. She goes from objectifying him to villanizing without 0 input from Ed himself. Like when Mei sees him as the Fullmetal Alchemist for the first time Ed just had a really rough few days: the fight with Scar, Winry's breakdown, the fight with Gluttony, Winry's departure, Lan Fan's injury, another fight with Gluttony and Envy, getting stuck in Gluttony's stomach and starving, fight again with Envy, the revelation about Xerxes and the Ishvalan war, finding a solution to a supposedly unsolvable problem, human transmutation of himself using human souls, being deconstructed and getting knowledge crammed into his brain again, seeing Truth and Al's body, realizing his dad's twin is the evil behind all the horror, his evil uncle turning off their alchemy, seeing Greed taking over Ling. That is a huge amount of physical and emotional stress with little or no rest in between. He's hurt and tired, he's being pinned by giant Envy and in comes this girl he's only seen once before defending Scar and starts screaming at him about breaking her heart and physically attacking him. I know it was supposed to be funny and we should think that her selfish and toxic behavior is cute, but I could never see it that way. She decides in this moment without actually talking to him that Ed is worthless, because his appearance is dirty after going through all this suffering and he's not as tall as she assumed, so she treats him as trash from then on and refuses to take her filter off for even a minute. This is a pretty big character flaw of hers for me.
I just hope Alphonse will put her straight at some point on this, since he knows and loves his brother. I'm missing the resolution / exploration of this from fanfictions and I'd like to see Mei admitting to this, maybe saying sorry to Ed and actually getting to know him as a person. If you or anyone knows a fic about this topic, I'd be very thankful for the suggestion. I hope you have a nice day!
I don’t think she really villainizes him or thinks he’s worthless. Yeah, her reaction to him being “ugly” was definitely over the top and it definitely crushed her fantasies about him, but as the series goes on, she DOES see Ed as a person, not just her ruined fantasy, and they become allies. Ed has definitely moved past it, he barely knew what was going on to begin with, I don’t think he really cared what some random 12 year old girl thought about him because we never see him bring it up, he kinda had bigger things to worry about.
They weren’t exactly friends, all things considered, she was sided with Scar and Ed and Al were still against him. I’m the beginning, yeah, she does call Ed “It” when talking to Al at Dr. Knox’s which is savage and sees him as an evil little thing but it was only a day or two after she first truly met Ed, she was probably still scorned and it wasn’t enough time for her to mature. At the same time, Ed and Al were still referring to her as “that girl” so I think they just....didn’t even think about her much until they needed her alkahestry
Tumblr media
Weeks if not months pass before they meet again. When they do, all Mei does is tell Ed he “isn’t her type” which isn’t a bad thing for her to do?? She doesn’t call him ugly or worthless or anything.
Tumblr media
And Ed doesnt seem to care either what she thinks of him, he just wants her knowledge. There doesnt seem to be any animosity from him about what happened (and he finally started calling her by her name lol)
Tumblr media
After this, they don’t interact again until the promised day. Months have passed, Mei has grown and matured. We see her begin to form a real friendship with Al and not just have a crush on him. She definitely grows as a person, and she never treats Ed poorly or says anything bad about him again, she hasn’t really since the few days after their interaction in father’s lair.
Let’s not forget SHE saved Ed’s life with Alphonse. And then vehemently apologized to Ed afterward for helping Al. Ed comforts her by saying it wasn’t her fault. If she thought Ed was worthless, she wouldn’t have sacrificed Al, who she loved so much, to save Ed’s life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Again, no animosity or villainizing between either of them. Even from Ed after what she helped al do.
Tumblr media
She even cheered him on when he fought father!!!
Tumblr media
And was sad to leave them, saying they’d meet again someday (this might have been directed toward Al, but she didn’t specifically say Alphonse, so think it was toward them both, but more for Al haha)
Tumblr media
So idk where you’re getting that she’s toxic and treats Ed like he’s worthless. They might not be friends but by the end they have some sort of respect and allyship. They definitely traded some slight insults during the beginning of the series, but it was mutual, and seems to be only surface level, and they can work together and respect one another when it really matters. Additionally, if she really DID treat Ed badly, I don’t think Al would put up with that, be friends with her, and visit her when he goes to Xing.
Yeah, she definitely could have and should have apologized for freaking out on him when she found out who he was. But I don’t see any evidence that Ed even had that much thought about it after it happened. I think by the end they’ve both grown past that. Mei saw him as evil little caricatures like once or twice offhandedly, but the majority of the time she doesn’t treat him poorly?? She just treats Al with much more affection and respect. And I think as the series goes on, she matures and treats Ed with respect as well.
Idk any fics about that, sorry!! But I hope you have a nice day as well!!!! Also, unrelated, but while I was looking at manga pages, I found the cutest panel of Xiao Mei clinging to Dr. Marcoh

Until recently, the hard sciences proved impregnable to political propaganda and to Soviet-style boycotts and censorship. Not anymore.Op-ed.
From college campuses to medical and mental health professionals, people whose careers are rooted in inquiry and fact are falling over each other to condemn Israel for last month's defensive war against Hamas – and in dreadfully uniform language.
I don't know how to stop the lies about Israeli "massacres" when that lie has now been amplified by professors at so many universities, by the media, by students, as well as in medical and scientific journals.
Physicians, both clinicians and scientific researchers, have also become politicized. According to a surgeon-friend: "I had to quit my women physician Facebook group because of rabid antisemitism in the guise of pro-Palestinian humanism. We formed a separate group called 'physicians against antisemitism that quickly got 1,500 members."'
According to Michael Vanyukov, a geneticist and a professor of pharmaceutical sciences, psychiatry, and human genetics at the University of Pittsburgh:
"I left the totalitarian anti-Semitic Soviet Union 30 years ago...little did I know that the scientific society I would soon join in the United States—Behavior Genetics Association (BGA)...would bring back memories of my old unlamented country. I recently learned that the company's executive committee expressed support for BLM. I was shocked. Not only does BGA have no business getting engaged in partisan politics but the BLM attacks on Jewish institutions were not random...unsurprisingly, the BLM leaders also describe themselves as 'trained Marxists.' Endorsing BLM – a racist Jew-hating group – returns genetics to its ugly history page of ignorance."
To his enormous credit, Vanyukov resigned. Makes perfect sense. We are undergoing the most profound degradation of both experts and of expertise.
For example, in 2010, The Lancet, once a premier journal of medicine, blamed Israel for the alleged increase of "wife beating" in Gaza.
These researchers failed to disclose that their study was funded by the Palestinian National Authority and their data was collected by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics. Further, they establish no baseline comparison with domestic violence in Egypt, Syria, and Saudi Arabia, countries which are not occupied by Israel or the West.
And amid the latest conflict, it published a letter May 19 from Issam Awadallah, of the "Shifa Medical Complex, in Gaza, Palestine." He claims that "this open-air enclave has been under siege for the past 14 years which has left the health system jeopardized by limited resources, failing equipment, and many essential drugs in dangerously low supply."
Blaming Israel for this state of affairs, when fortunes of money are given to Gaza only to disappear into attack tunnel infrastructure while Israel allows all medical imports, is unbalanced and untrue. Every failing in Gaza's infrastructure is due to the Hamas leadership, which has spent 14 years prioritizing its desire to kill Israeli civilians above the basic needs of Palestinian Arabs.
Awadallah repeats Hamas propaganda, including early, inaccurate, and out-of-context Palestinian casualty counts, including children.
The Lancet's role providing a platform for anti-Israel politics is not new. Some Lancet researchers fail to disclose that their funding comes from pro-Palestinian groups, such as Medical Aid for Palestinians and the pro-Palestinian Norwegian Aid Committee, organizations that are hostile to Israel.
What's newsworthy is that, despite pointed rebuttals by the president of the Israel Medical Association and other leading scientists – the Lancet's bias has persisted. Its allegedly "medical" and "scientific" articles routinely cite false information and in a way that conforms to the Hamas-created "lethal narrative" that's been adopted by the Western media.
Even when Lancet's authors are dealing with strictly medical issues in Gaza, they still refer, at least once, to the "oPt," aka, "occupied Palestinian territory" – and this remained true even after Israel unilaterally withdrew from Gaza.
After publishing an article that condemns Israel-only for suffering in Gaza, The Lancet then goes on to publish an equal number of letters which support and oppose said article. The pro-fact articles have often been published after a struggle and a delay.
What can we say about the once reliable Scientific American, which has now published an article which focuses solely on the "raging mental health crisis," but only in Gaza – not in Israel?
The article, written by psychiatrist Yasser Abu Jamei, the director of the Gaza Community Mental Health program, is accompanied by a photo of people amidst rubble, together with civil defense workers, in the "aftermath of an Israeli bombing raid." Abu Jamei refers to post traumatic stress symptomatology among Palestinian children as a result of Israel's "11-day offensive on the people of the Gaza Strip."
Abu Jamei does not mention the number of casualties and trauma created when hundreds of Hamas rockets fell short and landed on top of Gazans. He has not a word for the mental health issues in Israel due to Hamas's shelling (approximately 20,000 rockets since 2004) of Israeli cities, especially in southern Israel. Abu Jamei cites Gazan "children with poor concentration," "bed-wetting," "irritability," and "night terrors." (We know this is true for the children of southern Israel.)
Amazingly, Abu Jamei cites similarly inaccurate figures just as The Lancet did: "At least 242 people were killed in Gaza including 66 children, 38 women (four pregnant), and 17 elderly people." Not a single terrorist-combatant among them! Further, Abu Jamei saw "six hospitals and 11 clinics (that were) damaged." Not a word about whether Hamas had offices or stored weapons there. Not a word about Hamas's refusal to protect its civilians or its penchant for using them as human shields merely for propaganda purposes. In fact, Hamas is not mentioned at all.
But Hamas chief Yahya al-Sinwar admitted that his terrorist organization embedded its command centers and rocket launchers within civilian structures. It, he acknowledged, is "problematic." And as the names of the dead emerge, we find out a significant proportion of them were Hamas fighters. Hamas said it lost 80 fighters. Israel estimates the number as more than 100.
The head of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), in a striking moment of candor, said Israel's bombings in Gaza were "precise."
For acknowledging this reality, Matthias Schmale had to apologize and was removed from his assignment.
On campus, meanwhile, a wing of the union representing "25,000 faculty and staff at City University of New York" voted last week to "condemn the massacre of Palestinians by the Israeli state" and demand the school "divest from all companies that aid in Israeli colonization, occupation, and war crimes." At Princeton University, dozens of students, faculty, staff and alumni signed onto an "Open Letter in Support for Palestine."
The poisoned propaganda trickles down to public grade and high school teachers. For example, the Los Angeles Teachers Union hopes to vote on a resolution in September that would "urge the U.S. government to end all aid to Israel. As public school educators in the United States have a special responsibility to stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people... because of the $3.8 billion annually that the U.S. government gives to Israel, thus directly using our tax dollars to fund apartheid and war crimes."
Quite ironically, the Los Angeles Board of Education has just made a $30 million deal with Apple to distribute iPads to its students. Yet, a major supplier is using "forced labor from thousands of Uighur (Muslim) workers to make parts for Apple products." Those Uighurs also are subject to torture and held in internment camps where they are "indoctrinated to disavow Islam" by the Chinese government, a new Amnesty International report finds.
No boycott of China is proposed by the union.
The San Francisco teachers union has already called for "essentially the same actions" targeting Israel.
More than 20 years ago, a handful of us saw the tsunami of anti-Israel propaganda coming our way.
We were not heard. Actually, we were heard, and therefore, we were defamed, mocked, censored, and forced to publish in ever-smaller venues, knocked out of the mainstream media. Some of us were fired from our academic jobs.
And now the tsunami is upon us. The incoming president of Psychologists for Social Responsibility of the American Psychological Association is Lara Sheehi. She specializes in "decolonization" and, although she is not an expert in Middle East history, geography, or religion, describes herself as strongly pro-Palestine.
As usual, the propaganda has swiftly unleashed mini-pogroms and major pogroms against Jews around the world. In the diaspora, civilian Jews have no IDF to defend them.
Kathryn Wolf published an article in Tablet in which she eloquently described her "screams" about antisemitism in Durham, N.C. falling "on deaf ears." She concludes, correctly:
"If I have learned anything, it is this: The cavalry is not coming. We are the cavalry."
Phyllis Chesler is an Emerita Professor of Psychology and Women's Studies at the City University of New York (CUNY), and the author of 20 books, including Women and Madness, and A Family Conspiracy: Honor Killings. She is a Senior IPT Fellow, and a Fellow at MEF and ISGAP.

once i’m done going through everything i really am going to write about how the mustang squad, roy specifically, really is in a lot of ways without preference or bias, the dad figure edward desperately needed and gave so much to ed and al. and yes, i will be wanting threads with all f.ma people because honestly there is such variety no wonder its a masterpiece. but yeah like...there’s a reason roy is so important? i might reblog my meta on hohenheim but like...i’m a realist so i don’t think hohenheim’s apology came in time. that doesn’t mean ed doesn’t feel things for him and even love too, albeit confused love, not at all. he’s an immensely compassionate boy underneath all that snark and steel. why else is he the one considered a heart ‘unmatched’?
but literally the person who sparked fire back in ed’s eyes was roy and ed’s own will, but ultimately roy’s tough belief and recognition of ‘oh hey you’re not okay just like me and you’re a lot like me’ hit ed hard and got him to rise up again.
no one else did that. no elric alive or still in contact did that. roy did. and when he joined his branch and his entire career in the military worked under him with reports? i mean i talked to folks and i noted that roy literally goes out in the rain when scar targets the elrics. he’s risking his life and he has a way bigger target on his back than ed does as the ‘hero of ishval’.
so it’s just....while it isn’t very obvious, it’s way more obvious in 03? the shaking of hands, the faith, the ‘why didn’t you ask for my help first?!’ scene? it is there. and i just think roy continued the entire story rocky as they can be, to propel ed in his own way. those two are people who love very, very hard. and ed honestly doesn’t know what to do with roy’s concern and being an actual adult that hasn’t let him or his brother down besides izumi and sieg.
so yeah, he’s a bit freaked. but roy gave him the push he needed, and frankly i headcanon post pd that ed visits him as he recuperates / gets his sight back before beelining back to resembool to see winry and granny and den, and yes, he absolutely keeps contact with all of them.
ed needed someone like roy at his lowest point and unlike all the adults who failed before? roy didn’t. it takes ed a long, long time to process that, but it makes it one of the most subtle and most important relationships to me honestly for both characters. when roy goes blind ed isn’t impassive, he’s /freaking out/.
so yes, i think the two fill in things for each other in a familial, obviously platonic way that others can’t. and they’re so similar, passionate, brilliant, stubborn, and honestly they love intensely. and are willing to die any time for their loved ones.
so yeah, i think at the end of the story roy is that person ed would call at four am. not by any means gradually. but eventually. at least in my portrayal. and mustang squad? is just all these big brothers / uncles / and a motherly figure that doesn’t detract from trisha. just like izumi / teacher.
this relationship is just really important to me. it’s just done so well, and i was happy that when roy lost his way it wasn’t just riza there, ed wasn’t there as the token protagonist, he’s proven he is compelling for being ed and beloved for being ed not a shonen protagonist.
...... ed was there because he’ll also be damned if the person who saw dead eyes in an eleven year old gains those same eyes but with the intent of murder. he may not be hawkeye, but that’s his not so idiotic superior officer and maybe something deeper, something familial that he’s terrified to touch. and he’s willing to risk being burnt by that.
tl;dr: roy mustang was dad all along once things kicked off and fma is all about the family you find, and the family you learn to let go, hold onto, and accept, but also move forward. because you can’t change it.

Inhaling softly Roy rested his face into his gloved hands, fingers threading into black hair and tightening into a solid grip. He left them there for a few seconds before dragging his fingers over his eyes.
“Sir?”
Roy looked up at Hawkeye from where he was sitting, her eyes hard yet shining in concern. “I wish we didn’t have to bring Fullmetal into this.” He whispered, fingers pinching the bridge of his nose. “I don’t like it; he’s too young to witness war on this scale.”
Hawkeye didn’t make much sound except for the soft exhale as she closed her eyes. “I don’t like it either sir, but… orders are orders.”
Roy pursed his lips. ‘Orders are orders…. Yeah right. Just like how the genocide of Ishval was just ‘orders’’
Roy sighed and opened the car door, slipping out and grimacing at the chill breeze that swept its way through the streets. With a few long strides, Roy was standing in front of the dorm's large doorway. ‘Here goes nothing, tch, damn you, Bradley.’
They found Ed’s dorm easily enough, having made plenty of house calls beforehand to know the path by instinct. He rapped his knuckles against the door and waited for any kind of response, not that they ended having to too long.
Behind the door soft, nearly inaudible footsteps approached the door. The door creaked open slightly, half of Ed’s head poking out from behind it, eyes narrowed and eyebrows drawn.
When his eyes rested on them, he obviously relaxed, though the tension didn’t completely leave his body.
“Oh, it’s you two.” Was all he said. He stood back and opened the door fully.
“Lieutenant,” He tipped his head respectfully towards Hawkeye.
His eyes met Roy’s. “Colonel Bastard.”
Roy spluttered. “Hey! why do you acknowledge Hawkeye with respect but I’m ‘Colonel Bastard!?”
Ed raised a single eyebrow. “One; I give my respect to people who I think deserve it, and two; I may be reckless but I do value my life.”
Hawkeye coughed into her fist. “May we come in Edward?”
Ed blinked before giving a hesitant nod. He stepped out of the way and grabbed the doorknob.
“Mind the mess though.” He muttered.
Hawkeye nodded and strode past him, leaving Roy to trail after her. The second he was through Ed shut and locked the door, wriggling the knob for a split second before nodding in satisfaction.
Roy rose an eyebrow. ‘That’s an odd habit, though I guess it’s better than Fullmetal never locking the door.’
Roy smirked. “Paranoid much, Fullmetal?”
Ed scowled at him. “Like you aren’t?”
Roy dropped his smirk and blinked. He wasn’t that easy to read. Was he?
“Either of you want something to drink?”
Both of them shook their heads. “No thanks.”
Ed shrugged. “Suit yourself.”
The blonde stumbled slightly over to the counter and grabbed a steaming mug with his automail hand, yawning and leaned on the counter. He peered at them over the rim of his mug.
“So,” He began. “I’m gonna assume that this ain't a social call?”
Hawkeye nodded solemnly. “Where is Alphonse? We’d rather he not hear this. He would probably want to hear this from you and not us.”
Ed’s eyes dimmed slightly at the mention of his younger brother, shoulders drooping and body slumping.
“Al’s not here right now, hasn’t been here since yesterday, and won’t be back for a while, so you don’t have to worry about him overhearing anything.” He muttered, taking a long gulp of his drink.
Roy rose an eyebrow. “What do you mean by that? You two rarely leave each other’s side, and with how crappy you’re looking, I highly doubt he’d leave you alone.”
Ed’s eyes flashed with annoyance at the ‘crappy’ comment, but he didn’t say anything.
“He and I had a fight yesterday, it was… pretty bad.”
Roy took the time to observe Ed, eyes roving over the small Alchemist. His hair was down, a simple sweater and soft pants replaced his usual leather get-up. His eyes were droopy and his bags were darker and more pronounced than usual.
Ed pursed his lips. “I don’t even remember what the fight was about, it was pretty loud and,” He sighed sadly. “We said some things we didn’t mean. So he stormed off and most likely won’t be back for a few days.”
Roy couldn’t hold back the small flinch at that. ‘Shit, he’s not going to like this then.’
Roy and Hawkeye shared a look. Ed looked between the pair, eyes narrowing. “What aren’t you two telling me?”
Roy frowned before sighing heavily. “Drachma’s been attacking our borders in the North and North-West with increasing frequency, and State Alchemists are being called to the frontlines as back-up.”
With that one sentence any semblance of sleep that clung to Fullmetal disappeared, his once lax body stiffening and his eyes more aware. “So… we’re looking at war here, aren’t we?”
Hawkeye tilted her head. “Yes, we decided to come get you personally, as our team’s being shipped out later tonight.”
At Ed’s outraged face Hawkeye raised placating hands. “We were just given our orders, Ed, so it’s not like we purposely withheld this from you.”
Ed huffed an agitated breath, hand coming up to slide into his hair and grasp the golden strands into an unforgiving fist.  “Shit, shit, this is so fucked up.”
Ed trembled slightly in his spot against the cold counter, his automail deceptively steady as he placed the ceramic mug down. Roy stared at his subordinate. “You still have your military uniform Fullmetal?”
Ed glanced up at him. “Unfortunately.” He looked annoyed, like having to go to war was simply a mild inconvenience and not a life-changing experience.
 “Good, go get changed.”
Ed frowned, apprehension growing in his eyes. “…How long do I have?”
Hawkeye gave a sad smile. “Half an hour max.”
Ed nodded and made his way through the maze of books and other research instruments that made up the dorm. “Don’t touch any of my research notes Mustang!” He called from the depths of the dorm.
Hawkeye chuckled, shaking her head. “I’ll make sure he behaves Edward.”
“Lieutenant!” Roy shrieked.
Hawkeye smiled serenely, ignoring his indignant splutters.
“Like you haven’t been badgering him about his notes for weeks now sir, I don’t exactly blame him for being wary to leave you with any of his research.”
Roy did not pout thankyouverymuch.
The sound of boots hitting wooden floorboards drew them from their bickering. They both immediately took in the changes in Ed’s appearance.
No longer did Ed look like a simple civilian with artificial limbs; he looked like the ferocious Fullmetal Alchemist, Hero of the People, someone whose loyalty knew no boundaries. Mixed with the blue uniform he looked like every part of a soldier.
It made Roy sick.
‘Child soldiers, we’re using child soldiers.’
“Damn Fullmetal,” Roy smirked, if only to mask the nauseating guilt that was building in his gut and creeping up into his jugular. “You should wear the uniform more often, maybe then you wouldn’t look like such a shrimp.”
Fullmetal spluttered, rage growing on his face, though Roy could see the small amount of thankfulness in his eyes. ‘Give him the familiarity that he will soon lose.’
Fullmetal set his suitcase down and grabbed a stray sheet of paper and an abandoned pen, setting himself down heavily to the wooden chair.
“Just give me a minute to write something for Al,” Not once did Fullmetals’ eyes leave the paper.
“I don’t want him to come home to me being gone with no reason or explanation.” He said it so softly that Roy had to strain his ears to hear him.
“I won’t abandon him like that bastard did.” He spat, right hand curling into a tight fist.
Roy frowned as he watched the alchemist continue his note, continuing his way down the page before gently placing it under a paperweight made from some kind of shiny mineral.
Instead of setting the pen down, Ed grabbed another paper and began to write something else, seemingly oblivious to the slightly tense silence that had dominated the small apartment.
Ed gently folded the paper and slid it into an envelope, sealing it and tucked the letter into his jacket pocket. Fullmetal stood from his spot and picked up his suitcase, He nodded at them, only to stop and turn slightly, running a hand slightly over his scarlet cloak that hung on the chair.
He inhaled and pursed his lips. “Let’s get this shit-show on the fucking road, eh?”
Even though it was inappropriate, Roy smiled.

“Ah, young Edward!”
Ed looked up from his book just in time to get a face full of Armstrong’s chest, his large arms wrapping like a vice around his frame.
“H’ly shit Armst’ng, c’nt breathe!”
He was dropped almost immediately, Armstrong patting his shoulders. “Ah, my apologies!”
Despite himself, Ed smiled at the Major. “You joining us as well Armstrong?”
The major gained a slightly darker expression on his face. “My apologies, but no, I won’t be.”
Ed tilted his head in confusion. “I though all state alchemists were being called in?”
Armstrong smiled bitterly. “Ah yes, well I was an exception. Mostly because I wasn’t deemed trustworthy enough due to my… reluctance to fight during the Ishvalan Civil War.”
He shook his head. “No matter, I was assigned to look after your younger brother while you were away, so I’m not complaining.”
Ed smiled at that, despite the ache in his chest and the stinging in his eyes at the mention of his brother. He didn’t want to leave the country without finding Al and apologising for their fight, but he just didn’t have time.
He frowned, the letter in his pocket burning despite it being nothing but paper and ink. “Hey… Major?” He asked softly.
“Yes Edward?” Armstrong definitely picked up on his mood change, if the concerned look on his face was anything to go by.
He dug into his pocket and pulled out the envelope, gently pushing it into the Major’s hands. “If…” He inhaled, trying to ignore the trembling in his limbs or the thick lump that had made itself known in his throat.
“If anything happens to me, can you give that letter to Al for me?”
Armstrong’s sharp inhalation was barely audible over the crowd, but Ed heard it all the same.
The Major opened his mouth to protest, but Ed peered up at his colleague through his fringe.
“Please.”
Maybe it was the look in his eye, or the soft plea, but Armstrong nodded stiffly and pocketed the envelope.
“Fullmetal.” Mustang suddenly appeared at his back, eyes lingering on the envelope in Armstrong’s hand before meeting Ed’s.
Ed turned to stare at Mustang, then back at Armstrong. Mustang put a hand on his shoulder. “It’s time to go.”
Ed bit his lip and nodded. “Seeya Armstrong, look after Al for me would ya?”
When the younger Armstrong nodded, he smiled. “Thanks.”
With that, he turned his back on the larger man and began to follow the colonel towards where the rest of Team Mustang had gathered.
Havoc raised a hand. “Heya Chief!”
Ed smirked. “You guys ready to kick some Drachma ass? Havoc cheered. “Hell yes!”
The wind picked up at that moment, putting out Havoc’s cigarette and sending the skirt overlays of their uniforms flying with the wind. One airship lifted into the air, almost looking ominous in the dark.
Ed inhaled. “So this is it, huh?”
Hawkeye nodded from her spot beside Mustang. “Colonel Mustang!”
The team turned in surprise as a soldier ran up to them and saluted. “You guys are up next.”
Mustang nodded. “Thank you.”
The soldier nodded and pointed to the airship closest to them. “Your teams been assigned to that airship alongside General Simmons. Good luck sir.”
Without any pre-amble, the soldier had dashed off.
Breda stretched his arms out wide before picking up his pack. “Well we better get aboard.” He grinned. “Don’t want to get left behind now, do we?”
Ed snorted. “Pretty sure Colonel Bastard wouldn’t let us be left in the dust even if we wanted to.”
Hawkeye rolled her eyes with a smirk. “Come on boys, we have work to do.”
They all groaned sarcastically, but made it onto the airship without any trouble. ‘What a shocker.’
The rumbling of the airship taking off beneath his feet rattled Ed’s bones.
With a tightness growing in his chest, Ed sat and leaned against the wall, willing his brain to imagine the rocking of a train carriage in place of the rumblings of the airship.

After a few days of cooling off and stewing in alleyways, Alphonse finally felt stable and confident in his emotions to go talk to his older brother. Al sighed as he picked his way through the streets, the sun almost warming him in ways he hadn’t felt in years, even if he was still entombed in a bodiless state in his armour.
Just thinking about his armour made Al flinch and want to hide away in shame. ‘Some of the words I said… oh brother I’m so sorry.’
The words he said still echoed in his head, and it made Al want to both scream and cry and rage at the world and himself.
“If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be stuck like this!”
Al sighed and made his way towards the dorms, apprehension growing in his metaphorical chest.
‘What if brother doesn’t forgive me this time? URG Dammit Alphonse! Why do you have to be stupid!?’
He finally made it to the dorms, letting his feet take him to the apartment he and his brother shared. When he got to the door though, Al stopped. “What do I even say…”
He gripped the doorknob and shoved the key into the slot after a moment with his other hand.
“Brother, I’m home!”
Absolute silence.
“Brother?”
Alphonse walked further into the apartment, taking note of the dust and how none of the books had been moved an inch.
The glint of colour on the table and flash of scarlet caught his attention.
‘Brothers coat, what is it doing here and not with him?’
As he approached the table, it became obvious that the other colours that were glinting in the sun belonged to a paperweight.
It was a simple thing in retrospect, but it was a small gift from Teacher last time they had visited her, and it meant the world to them.
The paper under it though was new, and after a few brief moments of hesitation, Al picked it up.
Soulfire eyes roamed over the paper, disbelief and world consuming guilt encompassing the world around him.
Al let the paper slip from his hands and onto the table, armour rattling in distress.
“Brother...” The whimper slipped out before Al could stop it, even though there was no one around to hear it. Like it was a shameful little secret.
Suddenly the sun didn’t seem so warm.

An update on part two
@mew04444 Figured you deserved one of these as it has been 11 (12?) days and part2 hasn’t been posted yet.
I did very much mean to have it ready by now —a couple days ago actually— but real life hit me with a couple of curve balls and knocked that plan off track. However if al goes well, it should be ready and posted in the next 3-ish days!
As an apology for being late/to answer you question about what kind of magic Donald has in Kingdom Hearts; here!
In Kingdom Hearts Donald appears as a companion character who you can semi-customize the action of in all 3 main games (I think, I have not played them all, and it’s been a while), and as companion/helper of some kind in a couple more. He has several different types of magic/spells he can cast, including healing himself or the player. He was however, really bad at actually healing you, especially when you needed it. This lead to him being viewed as kinda useless/annoying throughout the fandom, at least, untill the end of Kindgom Hearts 3.
Near the end of KH3, Donald casts Zettaflare on one of the main antagonists, and literally just straight up vaporizes them. They don’t even get a chance to fight back, they just die.
Tumblr media
This insta-death is to be expected, considering Zettaflare is ungodly powerful. Literally. The Flare spells are a family of spells in Final Fantasy, a series which shares some canon with Kingdom Hearts for.. some... reason. We’ve never seen Zettaflare before in either series though.
Literal deities, gods in their most powerful forms, charge up to use lower-teir Flares as special attacks; Megaflare, Gigaflare, Terraflare, ect. These increment by factors of 1,000– meaning that depending on whether or not we’ve seen Petaflares and Exaflares before (I don’t know, I don’t play FF), Zettaflare is either the strongest spell we’ve ever seen by a factor of a thousand, or by a factor of a BILLION.
This means Donald Duck is easily the most powerful Black(destruction) Mage IN THE WHOLE UNIVERSE.
In other words, he can do healing, but it’s not really his thing XD
@bamboozledeagle actually has a post that’s somewhat relevant to this that puts KH!Donald and Storkules in the same place —probably the reason that was where my brain went when I first started trying to ship them tbh. I don’t have a link and I’m too tierd to find one, but I do have a screenshot:
Tumblr media
(Bam, if you’re annoyed I @-ed you or reposted a screenshot of your post without your permission I’m very sorry. I’m still trying to learn the Tumblr pleasantries, pls tell me and I’ll fix it in the morning, and replace plesentries with whatever the actual word that I’m looking for is. )

The spies hide out in every corner
Fandom: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Rating: G
Relationships: Edward & Alphonse
Characters: Edward Elric, Alphonse Elric; MENTIONED - Pride
Summary: His little brother has gone through so much.
Word count: 1.120
AO3
A/N: I can’t stop writinggggggggg
TRIGGER WARNINGS - nightmare, panic attack and trauma
--
His little brother is fast asleep.
Al has been having trouble sleeping these days, obviously because he hasn’t done so in years. He seems to relax when Ed makes him company, though it always takes him a little while to fall asleep. Tonight, Al didn’t take too long and in just a few minutes, he was breathing soundly.
Ed holds him in the meantime, pretty much awake. He hasn’t been tired, not with his little brother back home, always needing assistance and reassurance. Sometimes Ed himself needs the physical reminder that Al isn’t a giant armor anymore; that Al is fragile and yet solid on his lap.
Ed strokes his back and his long, uncut hair every now and then, Al breathing in and out. He doesn’t think Al has had such a deep sleep since coming back, and for that he’s grateful. The younger Elric needs all the rest he can get, all the time he needs to readjust.
Ed looks beside them, glasses of water, medicine and flowers decorating the bedside table. He smiles at all the love and attention their friends have given them lately, but he also appreciates the privacy the brothers have now.
Everything is okay.
Al shivers.
But Ed knows it’s not from the cold.
He looks at his little brother’s face, finding a frown and muscles twitching. Al is mumbling something, most of it nonsensical except…
“… n… no…” Al starts shaking his head and his eyes are forced shut.
Ed’s heart suffers for him once he realizes it must be a bad dream.
“Al,” he whispers, still getting a hold of him, “Al, wake up.”
The starved boy only makes more noises, each more tense than the other.
“No… don’t!” He gasps.
“Al,” Ed says louder, trying to soothe him repeatedly. “Al, you’re okay.”
Except it does very little to calm him down.
If anything, Al starts panting and he moves back and forth as if trying to break away from Ed’s hold.
“S-Stop!” Al yells.
“Al, wake up—”
“Let me go!” He shakes his arms to break free.
“Wait, Al-!” Ed subconsciously tries to hold him back but—
“LET ME GO!!”
Maybe due to Ed’s shock, Al is able to push him away.
And then Ed hears something hit the ground.
And everything goes cold.
“AL! ”
The scream that follows is worse than anything he’s ever heard.
Al is crying out in pain, heaving so violently that Ed panics and yet he remains there, unable to do anything.
Next thing he knows, the nurses have rushed to their rescue, and they put Al back in his bed, trying to calm him down. Al is still yelling and desperately trying to escape, begging them to let go of him.
Ed is forced to watch everything from afar, without going to his little brother’s aid. He struggles not to cry.
He feels nothing but guilt.
--
It takes maybe twenty minutes or so for Al to stop, and even then, it’s all thanks to sedatives.
Thankfully – thank goodness –, Al did not break any bones nor did his condition worsen. The nurses still emphasized he should stay in bed and not make any physical effort. And they also made a very harsh reminder that Ed should stay on his own bed.
Yet the older Elric remains seated beside his little brother, though respecting the latter’s boundaries. Al is nowhere near alarmed right now – he sleeps as if he hasn’t begun panicking in the first place –, but Ed is swallowed by questions. He wonders what could have scared Al this badly. Ed has had nightmares of his own, but he doesn’t remember Al ever having them when they were younger.
Regardless, he’s helpless as he’s unable to comfort his brother without making things worse again. Ed hates seeing Al suffer and he hates that he can’t protect him from whatever horrified him.
Suddenly, a tiny, sedated voice talks to him.
“Brother…?”
In less than a second, Ed looks back and finds Al already staring at him.
“Al? Weren’t you sleeping?” He asks.
“Not really…” Al looks down. “I’m… I’m sorry for scaring you, brother.”
“No- No, Al, you don’t need to apologize for anything, I’m the one who—” Ed exasperatedly grabs one of his own unkept bangs. He decides that’s not the focus. “Are you okay?”
“… Not really.”
“Did you have a nightmare?”
Al hesitates yet he nods either way.
“Do you remember anything?” Ed insists.
“I-I don’t want to talk about it.”
“Al…”
“It was really bad.”
“I know it must’ve been, that’s why I wanna know,” Ed tells him. “I’ve never seen you so scared like that.”
Al is looking somewhere in the dark, away from Ed; he looks at something unknown to everyone.
“… Pride was controlling me.”
Pride… that damn homunculus. He was a real pain to defeat. Now he remembers when Pride controlled his brother’s armor, pretending to be him, using him as hostage.
“I c-could… I could feel his shadows taking over me,” Al continues, still not facing Ed. “But I was in a human body… h-he was going to kill me.” Fresh tears glow in his tired eyes. “I couldn’t escape.”
Ed gazes at him with sympathy, unable to imagine the horror Al must have been in. Pride was perhaps the most horrifying of the homunculi, his shadows easily eliminating anything in his way. Pride took advantage of his little brother, he controlled Al and could have easily killed him if he had the chance. Al could very easily take care of himself and Ed believes that, but at the same time all Ed wants is to find Pride and kick his ass again.
“Al, he’s not coming after you ever again,” Ed says with certainty. “No one is getting their hands on you again, okay? I’ll make sure of that.”
His little brother looks up at him, unsure. Al… raises his thin arm, hand reaching out to him. Ed does not hesitate to take it in his.
“I don’t want to sleep again,” Al whispers.
“I know… but you need rest. I’ll be right here with you.”
“I don’t want to hurt you again, brother.”
“Don’t worry about me. I’m your big brother.”
Al smiles sadly, eyes slowly closing. “You’re always looking after me and not yourself…”
“I’ll be okay, Al.”
“Sure, I believe you.”
Ed rolls his eyes. Only Al is this sassy when he’s almost asleep.
“I mean it, though,” he whispers, “you can trust me.”
Al yawns, “I know…”
“You can go to sleep. I’m right here.”
“Mmm… g’night…”
“Good night, Al.”
“Love you…”
Ed is grateful Al can’t see the stupid grin on his face now. He touches his brother’s face carefully.
“I love you, too.”

Chamomile {Part VI}
Eda and Amity share a cup of tea
“Well, be my guest. You technically already are my guest, but… Anyway, whenever you’re ready.”
“Right. As I said, mother does it herself, she doesn’t call for a servant to do it, or a professional. No, that’s our little mother and daughter time, as she calls it. And she always goes on and on about how nice I look next to my siblings when we all have the same color afterwards. Looking like a Blight, she says. She’s there messing with my hair and she won’t even say a word, not a single word. We both just stay there silent as she goes through the motions. Have you ever done it? Have you ever dyed your hair? The first thing you’re supposed to do is bleach it, that’s important. Especially if you are going to put a light tone like this. I never really got it, her hair is a darker shade than this, Ed and Em’s too. But she always went for this light green. You’d think she’d make father dye his hair to, but its actually more like she forbids him from that. Anyway. To be fair, I actually prefer this over their tone. Anyway, I once asked Lilith, back when she was still my mentor, if your scalp was supposed to itch after you bleach it. She said it never happened to her. That was the end of it. But I guess it kind of changes with time, either that or I’ve gotten better at controlling the itch. After mother is done and the dye dries she will always shower me with compliments, the name Blight thrown every other sentence. She’ll keep this up for like a couple of days, give or take. Then, when it starts to fade or it just generally becomes old news, then its back to the cold shoulders. When the brown roots start to ‘spoil the look’, as she puts it, she’ll make sure not to let me forget it. The word Blight completely absent from her mouth when it comes to me. That will go on until our next mother and daughter time. Then she’ll call me a Blight again. Until then I’m hardly Amity anymore. She’ll do this kind of treatment with Ed and Em sometimes too. But their hair is naturally green, and they are better than me at avoiding giving reason to it, I guess. I used to think that it was favoritism or something like that. We talked, the three of us, I don’t think that, not anymore. Luz told you about that library fiasco, didn’t she?”
“Yup, she did.”
“So, what prompted that was the… let’s call it the broken vase mystery. A porcelain vase, I thought it was something passed down from generations, some sort of Blight heirloom. Nope, she bought it the week before. Those things all look the same, to be honest. Pretending to be ancient and more valuable than they actually are, way too needlessly intricate for you to actually appreciate the details. Honestly, I don’t even think there is something to be appreciated in things like that, once glance and you’ll get all that it has to offer. In any case, one morning the thing is on the floor, completely shattered.  Obviously, we were the three main suspects. Well… those two didn’t accuse me. But they didn’t exactly took responsibility either, and I knew for a fact Ed snucked out the night before and Em was covering for him. Some accident must have happened in the process and the vase was the victim. As I said, they didn’t take responsibility. So we all got grounded. I was livid. Three weeks, with another one of probation.”
“Probation? Seriously? Your parents gave you all a rap sheet?”
“I… I know… It really is worse than it sounds. Anyway, two weeks in, I storm into father’s office and tell him everything I knew.”
“Snitch.” Eda snickered.
“I’m not proud of that, but in the end I guess it was for the best, really.  They were proud, apparently, of what did, and the amount of evidence I had to support my innocence. So I was back to being a Blight. Ed and Em weren’t anymore, not until their sentences were done with, that is. They got two months added to it, eleven weeks in total, with the possibility of appeal after the sixth week, not counting the first sentence. Mother and father said: obstruction of justice is a serious charge. Technically they are still serving it. But they are veterans, they know their ways around surveillance and all that, why do you think they chose to go to the illusions track? So yeah, it was their turn to be mad. Their plan was to leak my diary on school, to make me lighten up somehow, not take things too seriously, whatever that means. Well… Luz probably told you how that went down. Now we can see eye to eye though, because of that, because of what Luz told them that night. It was a shock to them, I think. The three of us talked that night, we talked a lot that night. Turns out we all truly are those two’s children. Turns out their stories weren’t that different from mine. They just knew better than me how to do stuff in a way those two wouldn’t notice. The impossible even happened that night. They apologized, and something even more unlikely: I forgave them. We felt like family for the first time in… ever, I guess. It was the first time the words mittens didn’t sound just like mockery. One of the things they told me, about the hair, was that they would do that sort of stuff with them, both mother and father. It was with extra-credits though: Ed wanted ballet, Em wanted wrestling. Ed took up wrestling, Em took up ballet. They lucked out, they could teach each other in the wee hours. There was other stuff too, but that’s what I can remember off the top of my head.”
“Amity, your siblings sound lovely, and they seemed really nice when they came here the other day, and that day at the knee. But I don’t see how this has anything to do with your hair.”
“Honestly, I’m not sure myself. But… I think what I’m trying to say is that our parents are building us, and they are very specific about every single detail. Little miss perfect. Now that I think of it that nickname fits like a glove. The three of us really. Perfection was always the lowest bar acceptable to all three of us. No diversions, only perfection, only then we would be worthy of the Blight name. We didn’t ever really know what that perfection word meant, only mother and father could tell. And, well. My hair… It just so happens that this was the biggest flaw, the biggest and most glaring imperfection.”
Amity lifted her hand, she didn’t tuck in an lose strands of green this time. She just pointed her finger at the creeping light shade of brown. The line between kin and strangers laid so blurred.
“You were born with that, they are the ones who gave it to you. Is this how you see it? I mean, that, on your roots. That looks a lot like Al’s color, from what I remember. Is this the word you would describe it with?”
“Of course not, but it isn’t like that ever mattered. And yes, I did get my hair from him. But then again, he took up the name, not the other way around. He is the outsider, mother doesn’t say that out loud, but I’m sure that’s how she feels. You know, I think there are days they don’t even see each other. With all that you told me about them, he sounded so eager to take up the name. You said he was ambitious, right? Anyway. Dying my hair now, after all we talked about tonight, it just sounds like her way of showing me how thin the blightness sheet of ice I always stood on has been all along. I have at least that in common with father, I suppose, this kinship, if nothing else. I actually think that’s why I decided to follow his path with the abominations, even if I wouldn’t put in these words back then the way I’m doing right now. But then again, I guess that if dying my hair is what I need to do in order to be a Blight, I always thought that’d be worth it.”
“What do you mean?”
“Like, he’s the outsider, I’m not a Blight all the time. It felt right to follow his track. At least that’s what I thought. I always thought I looked more like him than her. I suppose she would agree.”
“I’m not so sure about that. You have his hair, his eyes. But I also see a lot of Odalia in you. Yup. You really are your mother’s daughter. Physical appearance and personality alike.”
“Wha-What do you mean by that?”
“I mean what I mean, and we both know you are clever enough to know what that is. I mean that at end of the day, you are still a member of the Blight family. There’s no changing that, at least not yet.”
“Really? I… thought I was managing to change any bad first impressions gave you, but...”
“But you did. Look at me, Amity. You did. And I don’t just mean that because of tonight. Honestly, I’ve have a hunch you were not a bad person since that day at the knee. Your siblings too actually. But that doesn’t mean you’re good either, but you have all the time you need to walk down that particular rocky road. You and I both know what your parents are like, what they are capable of. But the fact of the matter is, this is who you are, for now. You were raised by Odalia and Alador. And for good or for worse, mostly worse, they are a big part of who you are right now. You are a Blight. But, I’ve seen with my own eyes you take first few steps to go past the Blight. This is why I’m being so insistent on telling you that you absolutely need to make amends with Willow. As a matter of fact, I believe you should apologize for trying to murder Hooty, and bake King a few indemnisation cupcakes. I mean, you’ll probably be visiting more often so it would be better for you to change the bad first impression you did give the two of them. Trust me. Anyway, getting off track. Let’s make a little mental experiment. Shouldn’t be too hard for you, but imagine you marry Luz and become a Noceda. Hey, Hey, Hey. Focus, Amity. This is important, get your feet back on the ground. Now, sure, you’d not have people calling you Blight anymore, but that part of your past would still be there. That won’t just disappear with the name. The name on its own means nothing, but the past associated with it means everything. You have to choose, really choose not to be a Blight anymore. Assuming that’s even possible, that is. At the very least you can more Amity than Blight though. Really fixing things with Willow, making sure you’ll never do anything even remotely like that, willingly becoming a better person. Moving over being a Blight passes through all that for you, it won’t just come out of nothing. It depends on you. Tell me, if I were to give you a room in this house, tell you don’t need to go back to the manor ever again, would you dye your hair back to its natural color?”
Amity’s eyes grew wide. Eda’s grew morose.
“Would you really?”
This had little to do with Luz. Amity and Eda both knew it.
“I’m sorry, kiddo. I really am. But I can’t do that, this is just a hypothetical scenario. Honestly, when I saw that you and Luz were becoming friends I just knew you couldn’t be like Odalia and Alador, that you weren’t too far gone yet. That you at the very least were trying to be a good person… Well, I started running some scenarios in my head. Contingency plans, if you will. Should push come to shove, I could try and act on it. That was when I still had my magic. But even then, I don’t think it would work out. Petty theft, wild magic, that’s one thing. Abducting a kid, a blue blood at that… That’s something entirely different. All those scenarios ended with you getting sent off to one of those boarding schools they have at the left shoulder. And you need to keep it in mind, Luz is not from this realm. If she ever decides and manages to go back to her home neither of us will have any right to fault her, to try to stop her. If that happens, odds are you’ll never see her again. And I doubt you would like that, would you?”
“No… No, I wouldn’t.”
“Yeah… But hey, for what it counts. You and your siblings are welcome here anytime. And I do mean anytime, if you come knocking at four in the morning the doors will be open for you, and a cup of chamomile ready to go. And if you really need it, if you’re really fearing for your safety or something like that, at least I can promise you to put up a hell of a fight. Your father won’t be seeing my back this time around. And I’ll even drag Lily into it. I can also try to help you plan to leave that place as soon as possible. Beyond that... I’m really sorry, Amity, but my hands are tied.”
“I… That’s ok… Thank you… Really.”
“Don’t mention it.”
She didn’t meet Amity’s eyes. Trying to put up a front, she continued.
“Now, moving on. Who is this brown haired girl you seem to like so much?”
“She’s… a lot like Luz, or the Luz I see at least… Or maybe just like what I remember from when I was still friends with Willow. I don’t know which one, maybe she’s both, probably someone else entirely.  I don’t know who she is, I never met her. But I think about her a lot. I like her more than this green haired Blight girl. I think… I think that’s all I can tell you about her. Its like you said, at the end of the day, she’ll be a Blight and there’s I can do about it.”
“I’ve never said  that.”
“What?”
“I’ve never said that. All I said is that you are a Blight, and that you have time on your side. That’s not the same as saying that that’s all you’ll ever be. Didn’t Luz show you proof that what you’re saying just isn’t true? But yeah… This girl you just described, I don’t know if she will ever exist. Because even if you don’t think so, to me it sounds like she never really was a Blight, she never had to make the choices a Blight needs to make on a daily basis. In this sense she really is a lot like Luz. I’m not discouraging you from trying to be her though. She sounds lovely. She really does. You should aim for her, in my opinion. But don’t expect to become her. If anything, I can picture an Amity with brown hair and green roots.”
“What if I chose wrong?”
“Aren’t you used to it by now?”
“Ouch, you really are brutal, aren’t you?”
“Heh, sorry. But I mean it. Aren’t you? Wouldn’t you do exactly what you’ve been doing? Try and fix it?”
“I guess.”
“So, what’s stopping from asking Luz out? A proper date, that is.”
“Because if rejects me, she’ll be rejecting both my brown and my green hair. I can take it if she rejects the green... The other one… that’s a different story.”
“Ahh… Finally.”
Eda smiled as she saw her goals accomplished, Amity couldn’t help but to do the same. Her hair, falling over her face didn’t call for the same hiding anymore, however. Eda just looked at her, their different eyes sharing the familiarity absent before. She felt though she had, in a sense, just been defeated. For someone as competitive as her that should be a terrible emotion, but with a chuckle Amity continued.
“Heh… I’ve actually been postponing mother and daughter time, letting my natural color show, on purpose. I was doing that even before Luz showed up, but as the feelings grew, my feelings, no one else’s, it was only more reason for me not to want it dyed. Mother has been relentless about it. But I’m liking the way it is now. I don’t think its perfect. But maybe its better this way. I didn’t want Luz to know me just with this green, if she rejects me now, she’ll be reject both the colors. But yeah… Looks like you cracked me, finally.”
“Maybe it is. Look, Amity. I’m not telling you to go for it. You are wanting to ask my daughter out after all, and I shouldn’t get more involved than I already am. So all I’m going to say is just my own personal opinion. As far as I’m concerned, you’re a good kid. I didn’t ask all of that because I’m vetting you or anything like that. Well, not only that at least. But the main thing for me is that I just can’t bare to watch someone who has so many possible roads ahead stick to one she didn’t even choose herself, not after I learned how to be a mother. Not since Luz taught me that. And if this fear of her rejecting the same parts of you that your family rejected is what’s keeping you from acting on what you really want. Well, that just doesn’t seem fair to me. And you never know. I mean, I don’t think Luz ever had someone confessing their feelings to her, odds are her standards aren’t really all that high. I don’t know why she’d say no.”
Amity laughed, she had just been insulted but she just laughed. She should have been mortified, but she just laughed. Eda had once more made her laugh at herself. She felt vulnerable, as vulnerable as the sleeping Luz upstairs, but as long as she was in this home she felt as though no harm would ever come to her. She couldn’t explain this feeling, nor could she find it in her to avoid it.
“Well, that’s a pretty harsh way of putting it.”
Chuckling, Eda responds.
“You’re welcome. But you know, there’s another reason why I’m saying that. Remember that story I told you? That one about me, my sister, your parents. Well, I see a bit of everyone there in you. You have this strange shrewdness, bordering on cruelty sometimes. That’s Odalia’s. You have something about the way you talk, the way you carry yourself, even this mostly unvoiced self-depreciation. Alador was a lot like that when we were kids. You are gullible, you can just go with the motions set by others, like my sister. But you don’t want that, you want something else, you are taking your time sorting things out. That’s what I see of myself in you. But you know in who I don’t see anything of anyone in that story? Luz. She’s not exactly trying to replace her reality with a better one. Granted, I don’t know exactly why she chose to stay here and not go back to her world, I suspect there was something very much amiss in her life there. But whenever she talks about that place its not really with resentment. At least that’s how it feels like to me. She really is the wild card. If she had been there when all of that was happening, even if in the sidelines, most likely the stories of the four of us have been a lot different. What I’m trying to say is that all you have for trying to predict how she’d respond is the way she’s treated you so far. I’ll let you sleep on that. But for what it counts, and I’ll cut your tongue if you ever tell her I said this, I’m rooting for you. She deserves someone who cares about her. And tonight you convinced me that’s the case with you, you hit the last nail on that question.”
“You really think so?”
“I do, Amity. I do… Look, as far as I’m concerned, you, Willow, Gus. You’re all part of the Owl family, now. You care about Luz, she cares about the lot of you, that’s really all I could ask for. By the way, wednesday is Monopoly night.
“Monopoly?”
“Yeah, I don’t know. Its this game she found in the human garbage the other day. Kinda boring if you ask me. Just a heads up” Her expression suddenly grew dark. “Luz can get… Pretty intense… Now...”
Standing up, Eda left out a yawn, a clearly forced one, a hand covering her mouth, the other thrown way behind her back as if stretching. Of Eda’s many talents, acting was not one. Placing a hand on Amity’s shoulder again, she proceeds.
“Its pretty late. And Luz wouldn’t stop going on and on about her plans for the two of you. You’ll need  some sleep, trust me. You have a big day ahead of you tomorrow. You can just leave those teacups there, I still have some reading to catch up to. I’ll wash it before I go to bed. Good night, kid.”

Like,, I know u only know the fma and undertale fandom through absorption but like imagine, Edward Elric and Alphonse are the ones to fall down the hole instead of Frisk. Or, them having the save point/resets powers. Ed is Determination Personified u can't convince me otherwise. This Kid got trapped in a mine shaft with a pole through his stomach and was like,, yeah, I need u to pull it out and I'll heal myself with Experimental Powers and, with a hole in his back, fucked off to beat Up kimblee.
That would be terrifying and amazing holy cow. Imagine, also, if their Undertale adventure happened BEFORE the main plot of FMA. Like- when they did the Forbidden Alchemy and Truth yote them through his gate, something went sideways and wrong because of Ed’s sheer levels up Stubborn and so they both wound up IN the underground. Al with his body and Ed with … most of his? I still kinda want him to be missing that initial arm. Just cause.
Anyway cue Toriel finding the possibly covered in blood and crying children and her rushing to heal them and stuff and Al and Ed going on a grand Undertale adventure and TOTALLY doing at least two runs (neutral and then pure pacifist to make it right), Ed learning to abuse the HECK out of the save point system and determination over alchemy while Al … honestly I want Al to learn monster magic. Like- he and Ed obviously find a way to save the day but like- they totally figure out a way to use monster magic. Perhaps in a slightly more alchemic way but STILL something that isn’t “in the norm or rules” of basic alchemy.
Also also if I REALLY super wanted to AU this then it would JUST be Ed who falls into the underground and his brother Al isn’t his original little brother at all (he would be an only child in this au) but would be ASRIEL who Ed un-flowey-ed and turned into a human by like- using alchemy to build an inert human body (because that doesn’t break the Laws of Alchemy) and then using his own Determination to help build/stabilize Asriel’s soul and stuff it in there so boom. New bby brother he is monstrously overprotective of after they get back to his world which is like-a separate dimension from the Undertale dimension.
…. you know what that is amazingly interesting.
DARNIT I HAVE A NEW AU.
-Ed loses the only person in his life he loves and he is smart and desperate and has no sibling to even moderately hold him back. He studies under Teacher and he plans and then he-
-Makes the biggest mistake of his life.
-And he is going to lose everything for it, he KNOWS this down to his Soul as the thing called Truth laughs at his hubris and the gates yawn wide. But just before it can take him, just before it can UNMAKE him he-
-Refuses.
-His Determination burns and
-He
-Falls
-He wakes up, sobbing and in pain, the stump that was once his arm pounding with his heart. There is a face over his, a face that isn’t human, but he has no time to be afraid because the blackness takes him.
-He wakes up in an unfamiliar bed that smells like cinnamon, with a bandaged arm and the monster he will soon know to be Toriel sleepingly fitfully in an armchair by his bedside.
-He doesn’t take it well. He is a hot-tempered child prone to violence, he is a grieving child who does not take boundaries well. But … he is still a child, and he is hurt and grieving and scared. He spends months in Toriel’s care and he … loves her.
-He discovers save points day they fight in the basement and he screams-screams-screams with her dust on his hands.
-(there are two ways this AU might go at this point, one is that Ed snaps and goes on a Genocide run until he meets Sans in the Hall of Judgement(? I think that’s what it’s called) and there Ed has a change of heart and performs a True Reset, OR he just reloads the save point from before his fight with Toriel without leaving the ruins at all. Because I’m an Angst Lover™, my personal HC is the first option).
-Toriel can never get him to tell her why he sometimes stumbles into her room in the night and sobs apologies into her nightshirt, clutching at her with his one hand.
-His run after that is a True Pacifist run (yes yes I’ve read that has to be the second run after a Neutral but this is AU). He’s already got the blood of one mother (one run, one world) on his hands, he refuses to add anyone else’s). He meets the monsters of the Underground, and he is awed by their magic just as they are awed by his alchemy, and Alphys makes him a shiny new arm to replace his old one after they figure out that he CAN learn monster magic for some reason (the Gate, blame the Gate, humans in this world don’t have a Gate).
-And he learns things, and befriends people and sometimes he watches Sans and Papyrus and feels an ache that isn’t his arm and wonders why he feels like something is Missing™, like that should be a mirror of him and another when he is an only child. But he loves the brothers anyway, and he treats Papyrus like his hero, because he remembers this skeleton who was so very very SURE he could be a good person if he just TRIED, and he gives Undyne water because she may be scary and angry but she’s also kind of cool and he wants to be friends.
-But sometimes fighting is inevitable, no matter how much he refuses to kill and so when everything unravels and Flowey becomes his adult Asriel form … Ed fights. He fights and fights.
-But he does not kill
-He choses Mercy.
-And in the end, when Asriel insists he cannot rejoin the monsters as himself, Ed, being the stubborn genius he is, says, “Then be my brother.”
-And there among the flowers, using materials scavenged from the Underground and supplemented with magic, Ed makes an empty shell that looks a bit like him, but not quite. Younger. Gentler. He fuses magic and alchemy and pure unrelenting Determination to give this boy a second chance just like he was given one and…
-And the boy in the flowers opens his bright gold eyes.
-He wiggles his fingers in awe and Ed laughs until he cries.
-“What should my name be?” The boy (Ed’s little brother) asks shyly, “I don’t … think Asriel OR Flowey fit me anymore.”
-“How about Alphonse?” Ed asks, the name sitting easy on his tongue, “It’s a name from a book I read in the aboveground. I can call you Al!” And the boy named Alphonse smiles shyly and hand in hand they stumble up the path to the door that leads to the outdoors, to freedom and light and life-.
-They step over the threshold and the world crumbles.
-The Underground was magic, and magic had kept Truth from finding the wayward Edward, but once they were outside-.
-They tumble back through the gates on a burst of magic so strong Truth cannot stop them and steal anything more.
-They wake up on the bloodstained floor of Ed’s old family home.
-Winry’s grandmother (I forget her name atm) finds them when she comes to check on Ed, having seen the brilliant flash of light that came from the transmutation circle. She comes to … conclusions … when she sees Ed huddled there with a boy who looks like him but Not clutched in his arms, one arm now METAL like automail and an older haunted look in his eyes as he stares at her like he hasn’t seen her in a long, long time.
-She doesn’t ask. She just takes them home. When Winry asks who the other boy is, Ed says “That’s Alphonse. He’s my brother.” And something in his tone brooks no argument.
-It’s a small town, but the Elrics have always been Odd, so no one really questions it when Winry’s grandmother says that the boy’s father showed up late one night and dropped off a child from another woman (even Winry is told this story, though she … has suspicions as she grows older). Ed’s arm is explained as an alchemy accident, and if the “automail” that is a foreign design and strange makeup well … the Rockbells are eccentric mechanical geniuses. It’s probably just a new design.
-Roy Mustang knows none of these things when he comes looking for a genius alchemist. He finds the bloody circle like in canon, he talks to Ed about the military.
-Ed quietly tells him no.
-Funnily enough, the world still has a happy ending. Because Alphonse has never been aboveground save that one tragic time and he is curious about the world, so Ed and Al take to traveling, doing odd jobs with Alchemy to get by, and this somehow leads them getting dragged into the plot and probably Ed still joining the military just to get nosy people off his back.
-But the Homonculus are going to get a NASTY shock when they try their plot, because Ed and Al have already seen the end of that Run and they are not going to do it again and for all Alchemy is a known factor that Father can control.
-Magic and Determination?
-Not. So. Much.
