Nancy Drew season 4, episode 9 review (spoilers!)

Okay, so... what the fuck did I just watch?

First of all, the way the episode started made me think I'd missed an episode. I assumed the writers knew this was going to be their last season from the start, but maybe they didn't and that's why they're speeding things up now? This season so far has been filled with filler episodes and plotlines no one gives a fuck about - like, I literally do not give a fuck about what any of them are doing. I just want Ace and Nancy to finally happen (though I want it less and less each day) and to know if Ryan gets killed off or not. This episode might be the worst one in the series. Is Ace even a part of their group right now?

Yeah, second thing, what the fuck have they done to Ace? Why did Ace only have a brief scene with George? First, he was excluded from Kate's death anniversary, and now he's being excluded from literally everything? No, nope, nuh uh, fuck that. Fuck Nancy and fuck the rest of them, and fuck the writers. Ace used to be Bess's platanchor but now he's the only one missing from her court hearing? He just texted her? Do the actors have beef with Ace's actor or something? They made up some bullshit excuse for his absence, but the only explanation that makes sense is that the actor couldn't be present in their scenes and they had to work around it? But Bess saying George was her best friend and had been for awhile, and to not tell Ace, was the cherry on top of the fucking cake. So, this is what happens when you want Ace and Nancy to be together? Nancy can't date the same guy for more than three episodes so Ace was sacrificed? He lost all his friends in the breakup, is that it? I imagine that his ghost storyline has something to do with the sin eater or whatever but...

What is even happening on the show? All the episodes run together, seemingly unrelated for the most part. There are a bunch of different loose storylines that are supposed to mean something but I don't know what. The show is truly going out like this, huh? At this point, good fucking riddance. I'm starting to regret Nace ever becoming a thing.

Thirdly, Nancy is trying something "new" - ie. going on a date with someone uncomplicated and communicating more. Right... Because Nancy doesn't usually go on dates - she fucks the guy first and then they break up or the guy dies. The going on dates part might be new, I guess. But communicating properly? Answering yes or no isn't deep communication. And she said Tristan always was honest and always said what he thinks. Ace literally can't lie to save his life and he's also an "uncomplicated" person. What the fuck are you on, Nancy? Ugh, I always feel like I'm slutshaming Nancy, but it's sooo boring watching her flirt with a guy only for them to break up as soon as they finally get together. We all know those love interests won't last. She never even falls in love with them or gets to know them well. It's so useless.

I'll say that the show did manage to surprise me with the sin eater is a person and apparently her love interest plot twist. If Nancy killed him then I'll be happy, if not, she's for sure going to date Tristan now. Let's hope he died so at least one bad storyline is put out of its misery.

I'm sorry, I don't have anything positive to say. I also hate to be this person but it's like they're trying to fit every social issue they can in this season and it's so sloppily done.

Edit: It hit me now that it was supposed to be ironic that Nancy called Tristan uncomplicated but he turned out to be the Sin Eater. Before that, however, Tristan's parents tried to kill Ryan, but she called him uncomplicated anyway? Excluding Nick, Ace, and Owen (he was a bit too old for her though), Nancy has terrible taste in men.

My thoughts on 5x06: Double Bind

I went into this episode thinking, “Oh, it's so hyped up it's not going to be that good,” and boy, was I wrong. This episode was a full-on rollercoaster ride of emotion. It was either an intense or very emotional scene, nothing in between; you couldn’t catch a breath. Even during the commercials, I was like, “what the hell did I just witness.” Every moment went by so quickly that it was hard to sit and process what was happening because you would have a high-intensity chase and shoot out. Then it would go to an emotional moment between Nina and Scola. Throughout the episode, I was like, what the hell did I just watch even after I was speechless and didn’t know how to comprehend what I had just witnessed? One thing I will say, though, is this is one of my favorite episodes this TV season. I say that a lot, but I have not felt this much on the edge of my seat since the season 3 Nancy Drew finale. This episode's direction, editing, and writing were incredible, and the acting took it to another level. Shantel’s acting was mind-blowing in this episode and how she conveyed emotion in all her scenes was outstanding. I loved how Nina, who usually doesn’t break down that easily, showed how overwhelmed she felt about being with the team, not knowing where her and Scola’s relationship stands, and being pregnant with her boyfriend/partner's baby. It just kept piling up that by the end of the episode, she was so confused about what she wanted to do that she made the brave decision to step back and work in a different section of the FBI.

One thing I was scared of for this episode was how I would feel if Nina was pregnant. It was the main theory after the sneak peeks came out, and although I tried so hard to deny it was always in the back of my mind. However, now that it has been confirmed, I am okay with it and don’t mind it. I see the potential it can give to developing characters and why the writers decided to do that specific storyline. I think the main reason I'm okay with it is how the elevator scene where Nina tells Scola she is pregnant went. I loved everything about that scene, the emotion, the facial expressions, and just, all in all, how it was written. For me, it showed a different side of Nina as a character she has broken down before, but in this scene, it was different. It showed how stressed out she was in the non-angry way we are used to seeing from her. I loved how we got a Stressed and scared Nina while also getting a sort of dumb-founded Scola tripping over his words, not knowing what to say or how to react to the news that Nina just told him. The elevator and ending scenes were two of my favorites. The ending scene I loved because of how closely it mirrored the first episode when we first met Nina when Scola asked if they could go get dinner, and she stopped the elevator door from closing and agreed to go to dinner with him. I remember as I was watching the ending scene of Double Bind. After she stepped in the elevator, being like, “great, all I really wanted was for scolina to kiss, and they aren't going to.” Then when she stopped the door and ran out and kissed him, I was happy because I knew ahead of time that this was Nina’s last episode working with the team, and that is the one thing I wanted to happen since we didn’t get it in Love is Blind.

The pregnancy storyline, in my opinion, was more of a way to help keep Nina on the show and develop both her and Scola as characters (mainly Scola). It will be interesting to see what happens, how the writers develop this storyline, and how it will affect Scola as a character. The one thing I will say about this episode is that it made me realize how similar Nina and Scola really are, the way that they express emotion is awkward, and they both look around when they feel uncomfortable talking about a specific subject. They both seem like they don’t like big surprises that disrupt their life, and both tend to trip over their words when they don’t feel like talking about something, even though they know it has to be discussed. It's evident that they are still trying to figure out their relationship and what they mean to each other.

This episode was by no means in a way to close Nina’s story arc and left a lot of my questions from previous episodes about her character I wanted to be answered unanswered and, with that, created more questions that I want to be answered. However, I love Shantel’s acting and her character, Nina, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store for the character, even if it is like a 10-second convo with Scola.

Entertainment Spotlight: Aadila Dosani

Canadian actress Aadila Dosani stars in The CW’s Nancy Drew as Amanda Bobbsey, one half of the Bobbsey Twins. Originally from Calgary, Alberta, Aadila was the only female member of the University of Toronto’s champion rugby team. Aadila is perhaps best known for her role in the mini-series, Unspeakable. In 2014 she received an AMPIA (Alberta Media Production Industries Association) Nomination for ‘Best Performance by an Actress’ for her role in Double Booked. Aadila sat down with us to discuss playing Amanda Bobbsey and the making of Nancy Drew.

Do you have any headcanons for Amanda Bobbsey?

If I had to choose one word to describe Amanda, it would be “curious.” Amanda has such a zest for life and hopes that she and Gil can have a better life. When I started prepping all things Amanda, the one thing that kept coming up was that she wanted to experience life and see the world. She didn’t grow up in a traditional manner; she and Gil always had to fend for themselves, so she would always dream that there had to be something better out there for them. She is a consummate dreamer. She wanted to travel. SO—what no one knows is that I actually bought a globe and pinned places on it around the world where Amanda wants to travel, which is so funny because the show may or may not allude to this Dora the Explorer side to her!

What’s a mystery in your life that you’d like Nancy Drew’s help to solve?

I would LOVE Nancy Drew’s help to solve “The Mystery of the Missing Socks.” Does the dryer really eat them up? Is there a sock mouse in the house? I cannot, for the life of me, figure it out!

What’s a fact about the making of Nancy Drew that fans would be surprised to find out?

Not so much a fun fact about the making-of, but did you know that every member of the Drew Crew can sing? They have voices of angels! It is insane! Not only are they so incredibly skilled at bringing their characters to life in the fullest of ways, but they can also belt out show tunes like Idina Menzel’s spirit animals! Musical Episode, anyone?!

Do you have a favorite Bobbsey Twin moment or scene (so far)?

ALL OF THEM. I have to say I love Praneet Akilla (who plays Gil Bobbsey). He is now my forever brother. We instantly clicked when we met (which was a year before we both found out we were playing The Bobbsey Twins). Fun fact, we are both from the same hometown of Calgary, AB. So we already had that innate connection. I truly love exploring our relationship because even though we are twins, we are two completely different humans. It is such a treat to explore a twinning relationship as an actor—so rare and so full of layers. If I am honest, I loved Episode 9, “The Bargain of the Blood Shroud,” because we were really allowed to explore our relationship and dynamic. Without saying too much, you really get a feel for how much Gil and Amanda rely on each other.

If you could host your own game/reality show, what kind of show would it be?

Winter’s Nancy Drew Rewatch

Welcome to my first rewatch of my current favorite comfort show ❤️ Under the cut are my thoughts and a few insights I hope you enjoy - I’ll be going through each episode and posting these periodically with the tag winter rewatched Nancy Drew.

1x15 - The Terror of Horseshoe Bay

Interesting title - is it’s in reference to the Josh? Is it in reference to the cases at large? Is it in reference to the Karen reveal at the end? Is it Lucy trying to contact from the great beyond? It can be so many things!

Overall MVP

Ace 1000% percent - he drank poison for Nancy - how can you not get MVP after that? Even if Owen over there went with Nancy on her CEO excursion and unwillingly became the sacrifice (only for that not follow through…), Ace wins every time.

Because while Owen was lackadaisical in his “choice” to get with the crew and help, Ace was solid in his decision - looked the a vile, heard/saw Nancy get visibly upset, takes the vile himself, confirms what he already knew to be true, and drank supposed poison for her!

It’s like last episode he had that speech about his purpose and just pressed on the gas full throttle. Maybe it was also Nick’s words about not doing anything halfway...

Nick, give Ace another pep talk please in season four. You do good with your pep talks.

Special shout out to Nancy’s eyes during that scene because girl was halfway between “omgigosh don’t die even though I know I’m pretty sure I’m right” to “my boy is so sure in his convictions its kinda hot and I can’t believe he’s doing this.”

Most Heartfelt Moment

It wasn’t really heartfelt as much as it was bittersweet, but I’m going to highlight it here because this is my recap and I make the rules.

That scene post poison drinking with Ace and his Dad - break my heart - you can clearly see that Ace loves his Dad, despite his stubborn and obstinate demeanor. And I know its very much highlighted later in season three, but even here, you can see the dynamics that are currently in place in the *cough* Hardy *cough* household. Yes, they might have cute gnomes in their front yard, but it’s like after his accident, Ace’s dad got even more entrenched in “his way or the highway” mentality and even here, with the slightest of disagreements or oppositions, he’s like you don’t know anything cause your a kid basically in his dismissal of Ace’s worry for him. Like your kid is just worried about you, you don’t have to be a jerk about it. He also almost died from supposed poison and your making this about yourself and your position in life.

I really need this dynamic to get explored more in season four now that Ace has a stable, more “acceptable” job I suppose by society standards than dishwashing, and that he has his own place, seemingly looking like he’s on “the right track” (again, by society standards) and what his father thinks now.

What would be really interesting, is if in some turn of events, his Dad is the one to say something about being proud of him, but if he’s living his life alone, then all those things don’t really mean that much and that he’s so thankful he has Rebecca and him to lean on. THAT would be cool and possibly make me cry...

Most Comedic

“Someone want to awkwardly change the subject?” I love you precious boy with no social filter

And then the sort of funny but also insightful exchange between Nancy and Ace about their Aglaeca asks (note: they are the only one of the crew who admit they ask for anything…just saying…)

“One day I asked him for the PS3. I didn’t get the ps3 but I asked for it.”

“I’m still waiting for my hoverboard scooter and my first edition copy of ‘All the Presidents Men.”

Can these two things come back around? Birthday gift ideas? Anniversary? C’mon.

Ace saying thank you to the Aglaeca is ICONIC ❤️

“Bess, it’s you and me and Florence” it’s not so much funny as jr hs just endearing and also sort of sad considering Ace literally drank supposed poison for Nancy and she went off with Owen…

But I get it was meant to be funny…

Best Overall Line

Owen saying “is this like a normal thing for you guys?”

Nancy’s “almost dying is my new normal”

Scare Rating

For sure the creepiest episode to date - maybe an 8?

Nace Slow Burn Rating

I sort of when into this a bit above under MVP, but another thing to note in the Nace Slow Burn saga in the vein of how Ace is so deliberate in his decision while Owen remains very *meh* that is in Owen deciding to help the crew, says almost verbatim what Nick said in 1x13 - Nick said I believe that you believe and that’s good enough for me and Owen says to George I may not believe, but I know Nancy saw something and I believe her.

I said it in my 1x13 recap, but I’ll repeat it here - everyone around Nancy (including her romantic interests) believe in the supernatural or the mystery by way of Nancy, like she’s the conduit for them getting involved. Ace is already involved - he’s not along for the mystery by way of Nancy, he’s right by her side - he’s alongside her in the journey rather than getting pulled along. I just think it’s a really important distinction that I’m noticing in my rewatch that I don’t think was done haphazardly by the writers having lines like this repeated by those that care about Nancy.

Also another pattern of note: Nancy flirting and getting heavily involved with other guys while her more profound feelings for Ace just grow and grow - it’s like a little seesaw effect happens where the minute there’s some sort of static electricity moment *hi 1x14 library scene* she runs to the nearest crush and falls into their arms. Happens all the time. And I get it. Profound feelings that are the foundation for something deeper and lifelong vs. trysts that are fun in the moment and seem like the better option because whoa those deep feelings are too much to unpack right now.

Lastly, and I could say this in nearly every episode, but mentioning it here for the sake of comparing beaus - the way the writers continually weave scenes in where either Nancy is talking or Ace is talking and then the other agrees with the other’s outlook or plan or theory or finishes their thoughts because they know what the other was going to say is brilliant. I guess upon my first watch I didn’t notice how often it happens but if I was Owen, I’d be like “what is up with you and Ace?”

Same brain energy all day everyday.

Anyway, rating at a steady six because DRINKING POISON.

sadfkja I joke, I do have other ideas, but that is definitely high on my wish list! i'm gonna go through by character and talk about what I'd like to see for them, so this is gonna get quite long whoops...

the main thing that I'd like to see overall, though, would be evidence of an overarching season plan or arc - it doesnt necessarily have to be a plot that stretches through all the episodes or anything major, but I'd love them to have plotted out the season before they start. from watching this season and then reading interviews after the finale, they dont appear to plan many things from the start and end up throwing in ideas as they go along. if they plan it from the start they can foresee how theyre going to affect character development more, and they can have a bit more balance in the types of episodes they have, so that the season is less insane and more naturally ebb-and-flow with a few light episodes to break up the drama.

okay, onto the characters! just going to do this in billing order for simplicity's sake. customary reminder that these are just my own opinions and thoughts, and this is more of a wish list than a realistic expectation.

okay so I'd love to see them actually develop his character. Owen has been given a lot of backstory with lots to play with development-wise, but to me it feels like the show never goes anywhere with it. he's got a lot going on what with 9/11, feeling responsible for the fates of his fellow firefighters, the codependence of his relationships etc. I'd like to see him go to therapy and see him grow some self awareness and seek to manage himself better, rather than all his screentime devoted to him being a hero when other characters have the situation handled. it would really show him as a good leader if he drew on the skills that his team has and refer to them for advice/ideas. realistically he is the main character, so I'd like them to develop him like one.

also, I kind of love the chief role for him? I think it would suit him really well. but it would drag him away from the 126 and split up the dynamics too much so it would make for bad tv and I wouldnt actually want to see that. good for his character though.

I love Tommy :) just wanted to say that.

so obviously Tommy's got a lot of grief to handle next season, and I don't want them to shy away from that. I want it acknowledged and processed. (I'd also like a little bit of seeing the twins' grief too, because they're also suffering a massive loss). maybe something with Judd helping Tommy learn to manage her grief with his own experience of losing the original 126, encourage her to go to therapy, plus Tommy, Grace and Judd all feeling the loss of Charles together. after all, Grace and Judd were his friends and they will be grieving too.

I'd also kind of like to see Tommy have something outside being a working mother. obviously we're going to need to deal with that a lot especially now that Charles is gone, but I feel like she's been assigned the Character TraitTM of being the working mum and I'd like to see them give her a hobby or something. idk. and give her a night off with Grace or something. give her something just for her.

okay so I think theres a fair likelihood that theyre going to return to looking at TK's addiction next season which im not averse to. I think him struggling with his sobriety would be worthwhile to see for his character and to show that its not a straightforward path, plus it makes sense with all the insane stuff they've thrown at them in s2. however, Id like to see it in the context of his friends and family rallying around to help and support him and show him that he's got people to rely on, and that he's allowed to rely on them, plus the support of his AA meetings and therapy. I also need them to lay the groundwork for him struggling, so putting in signs of him deteriorating so the situation makes sense. this storyline doesn't need surprises to be interesting or good, and frankly it shouldn't have any.

as for him and Carlos, I definitely want to see them househunting! I'd like to see the combination of househunting/Carlos with Tommy's kids/Grace and Judd having their baby have an impact on their perspectives regarding their future and spark that conversation (like, looking at houses with more rooms and thinking about kids, future, marriage etc). I think that maybe one of them, probably TK, or maybe both of them those boys have way too many parent issues having anxieties about being a dad could be an interesting way to add tension without being too drastic, and then that can be resolved in a way that reassures them of their relationship and reaffirms their strength as a couple. the talk about the future would also lay the groundwork towards a proposal at the end of s3.

I could watch episode after episode of Grace kicking ass and saving people over the phone. I'd love to see an episode set there? like, some kind of story within the call centre with all the handlers having to resolve that between them, but also tie in the first responders, so we see the fire team, the paramedics and Carlos all working but we only see the bits that Grace and the other call handlers hear, if that makes sense? also an actual Grace/Carlos team up where they are coming in from the different angles with different amounts of evidence and figuring out the best way to solve something together. plus I'd like to see her maybe get some recognition for being awesome at her job, maybe another handler coming to her for advice on how to solve something.

of course we've got the baby Ryder on the way, and I want that to go comfortably and smoothly for her. she deserves that. lots of wholesome excitement for her and Judd from the whole extended firefam, baby shower, gifts, the full works. pamper grace please.

yeah I know its not gonna happen, but I loved judd stepping in as captain this season and I'd love to see that continued with him taking more leadership, and Owen deferring to him for advice/council in a work environment rather than personal life. maybe set up a long term idea about judd being a captain someday.

he's gonna be a dad :') so what are his anxieties about that? why were they putting it off before? was it related to his PTSD? he's got lots of people relying on him now, how does that make him feel? what if his kid loses him? id like to see him still using therapy as a tool to help himself deal with everything. lots of meaty questions to dig into there :D

I'd quite like to see more of her balancing her daredevil nature with the impact of that and realising how much danger she puts herself in sometimes. or on the flip side, maybe the team is dealing with a really dangerous situation and they utilise her fearlessness to save people. her relationship with social media could also come back? but bring in the development they gave her this season, and her Firefox presence is more serious, less flippant?

I think that theres now a space for her to explore her sexuality/romantic experience now that she hasn't got her engagement with Salim as a kind of failsafe. maybe she wants to put herself out there and date, but thats really daunting as shes never really had to do that before? personally I think this could tie in really well with a self discovery/exploration regarding her sexual orientation, but I doubt they’d go there with her, so thats just my headcanon.

-Paul

I want them to draw on Paul’s observational skills and perceptiveness more, especially on calls and in emergencies. I remember someone (sorry I cant remember who) pointed out that he would have been a great character to centre the arsonist plot around in terms of noticing the clues etc, so id love a storyline that revolves around him dealing with an emergency like that. I also really want a Carlos and Paul friendship so maybe them collaborating on a call to solve something, that’d be cool.

can we give Paul a girlfriend please. if im not complely insane, there was a reference to someone in like,, 2x04?? someone who put mayo in his sandwich? idk I havent checked (edit: it was aioli in his banh mi! thank you @meneatyoghurt), but if there is someone can we show him having a fun and loving relationship please. I dont need there to be any drama. just them having fun on a date or something.

so I know that some people are keen to see him in his police role more but I really don't need much of that. on calls with the 126 I'd like to see him be the officer in charge more, but I don't need police-exclusive storylines. I've talked about it here if you want to know why.

the only area that I'd like to see would be in the direction of reform/addressing the flaws of the system, and I think they can do that on a personal level for him, because he and Mitchell need a chat. if they'd gone with her decision in 2x08, he, Mitchell and the bank robber would all be dead, and I think thats gotta have some impact. also the fact that he was suspended for trying to preserve life. theres a lot they could work with there and maybe have him thinking about how he can do good and how he can effectively protect and serve. not to mention, the opportunity that would provide in terms of addressing his relationship with his dad and how he maybe sought approval by pursuing a police career?

also I’d like him to learn that he doesnt need to accept blame/preemptively put blame on himself and that he doesnt need to apologise when someone else hurt him. kind of want to send him to therapy. kind of want to send all the characters to therapy. but yeah, him learning that he can accept apologies and understand that he doesnt have to make people feel better for hurting him. hes allowed to be hurt and feel pained about it. and that can tie into his relationships with Mitchell, with TK and with his parents.

I think I mentioned most of the tarlos stuff in TK’s section, but I wouldn't mind at least one instance for them where we see it all from his perspective instead of TK’s.

finally ive mentioned above how i’d like a team up with Paul on a scene and both of them figuring it out together. I'd also like them having a friendship outside work, just the two of them, bonding over books and being relatively sane people compared to the rest of their friends.

-Mateo

Mateo is so sweet. I loved 2x14 and the recognition he got, more of that please! also theres still so much I want to know - one of the more consistent things they set up for him in s2 was his faith, so I want to know more about that. what's his relationship with religion and God? he's pretty isolated from his family so how does he feel about that? is his religion something that helps him feel connected to them? maybe the church helped him find a community when he first came to the states, before he got settled with the 126, and he finds reassurance in faith that God is looking after his family while he cant be there? I think maybe there's scope for a conversation between Marjan and Mateo about that, about that distance and caring for their families through faith and prayer.

also, if he's still with the horrible firehouse, I'd like to see the other firefighters being won round by his resilience and stepping up to look out for him, and someone backing him up against the captain. Mateo is used as the butt of the joke most of the time, but I'd also like to see a bit more acknowledgement of things like losing his house and the bullying hes going to get more of from this firehouse.

-Nancy

I think that her speech to Tommy in 2x14 was really telling, and I'd love to see them expand on that a bit more. first on the loss and fear of losing her friends and coworkers, but then also on her hopes and aspirations - she said she wants to be a paramedic captain so lets see her working to take her exams and qualifications, and showing initiative on scenes etc.

id like to see more of her being integrated into the 126 group. she and marjan turned up to the hangout together, so lets develop that relationship more. I would love it to be romantic but I'd also love to see that as a friendship. but also her forming bonds with others in the group as well as more of her and TK being a chaos duo. I love that they stole the ambulance, more of that insanity please!

I think thats it? if youre still reading, youre insane and I appreciate you a lot! honestly im open to all sorts of things in s3, this isnt a prediction or anything, its just stuff I think would be interesting based on where the characters are now.

hello! so i’m a relatively quiet SPN fan blog over here, but i just wanted to make this little informative post for anyone who might be willing to try some retro vibes and check out my other favorite brothers, frank and joe. (note: i didn’t bother editing any of these screenshots/gifs so i apologize for the quality; it’s 70s film in case you couldn’t tell.)

i’m going to keep it short and sweet: you love that codependent, i-need-only-you-by-my-side, i’d-die-for-him-in-a-heartbeat, rescuing-victims-and-taking-out-villains kind of brother soulmate vibes? then this is another good show for you. allow me to demonstrate in gifs.

you want two brothers scheming like madmen to stop the bad guy? we got that. frank and joe are absolutely feral. they’re unhinged. in one episode, they’re being harassed by literal black magic voodoo doctors, mad scientist laser engineers, and the local police force and they laugh. they just stand there and laugh and stare into each other’s eyes and make jokes as though their actual lives aren’t being threatened and they’re not in danger of being murdered at any second. they look evil in the face and they don’t even get angsty about it. they just laugh, like, who cares. we’re together and that’s all that matters. bring on the pins and dolls, you petty bitches. it’s sundown and we’re ready. this is every episode.

personal space? never heard of her. a complete stranger to us. they’re this close in every scene. i’m not even kidding. frank has the whole living room to sit in and he chooses to perch on the arm of joe’s chair so their arms touch. i really think that if they didn’t get within three inches of one another every five minutes they’d just...lose all will to live or something.

please for the love of god, look at how they look at each other. they’re literally just talking about where to find an office in this building and it’s like this is my favorite person in the whole world and i love seeing him smile. i love him. i love him. like, it’s almost blinding to watch this scene honestly.

oh, you enjoy the protective big brother(tm) flavor? we got it. and protective little brother too if you like the taste of that.

standing up to anyone no matter how powerful? always having each other’s backs? yep that’s here too. (spoiler) they become fbi agents in season 3 and (spoiler again) nobody at the fbi can control them. they’re impossible to rein in. one of them makes up his mind and the other one’s just like, ok, guess we’re gonna disobey literally everyone in charge and die together today, that’s cool with me. let me just grab my jacket.

this gif is basically the whole series in two seconds--driving out to somewhere new “with just enough gas and water to make it to the next town,” knowing they’re probably going to run into trouble somewhere along the way and perfectly happy about it. (and if you didn’t recognize him, joe is played by none other than shaun cassidy, real-life world-famous guitar-strumming pop star of the decade known for being one of the cutest people alive, which he displayed well in his role as joe.)

oh? and their dad? wonderful, splendid, we love him. a single father with a lot on his plate, he raised his sons with all the material and emotional support they needed. their relationship with him as adults is very strong and healthy and basically he’s just, like, the best dad on television ever. no parental issues here, ladies and gents; everyone’s good.

and the best part? as of right now they’re all available to watch for free on youtube. so you don’t even have to pay anything to enjoy them. if you like nice little mystery/adventures stories, you have a thing for good powerful brother vibes, and you can look past some of the quirks and secondhand embarrassments of 1970s family television, please try it out! i’ve loved them since before i started watching supernatural and i want others to love them too!!

but just so you know, in the first season, every other episode is a nancy drew episode without the hardy boys--they’re cute too but if you’re not interested you can just skip every other one until season 2.

Last time I made a playlist of recommended youtube channels to enjoy while in lockdown or self quarantine, I focused on individual videos while also recommending other videos from the same channel.

I thought I’d make another list only this time I’m going to be recommending playlists or series on youtuber instead of just individual videos.

This is gonna go exactly like last time, so check out any of these that might seem interesting to you, and hopefully I can give you something to look into if you want something to watch but don’t feel like watching a Netflix or Crunchyroll show.

Cinemassacre movie reviews and topics

All of you already know James Rolfe as the AVGN. I started watching him before Youtube was even a thing, before he was even signed on with Screwattack. Back when his videos could only be seen on his own website (or for some reason included on the free DVD you got with the local video game magazines). However, I eventually outgrew the outrage style humour of the AVGN episodes... but then James started doing Monster Madness where he would talk about his love for horror movies, and this where I learned about his vast knowledge about movie history and even films I had never even heard mention of before! I think it’s safe to say, he got me to be interested in movie history just as much as movie production and film as a viewing experience.

I recommend this playlist which is a hodgepodge of James talking about old horror movie franchises, talking about his first experience with Power Rangers as someone who didn’t grow up with it, or how Bob Ross is a childhood hero of his. It’s an excellent play list that’s really laid back but you learn a lot of stuff from it. James is very informed for the most part and it leads you to wanting to check out a lot of these things too, just because he’s so passionate about it.

If I ever get over my weird hang up about speaking out loud, these are the kinds of videos I’d like to make.

Vinesauce Vinny: The Neverhood

Vinny is by no means a new Let’s Player, having been on Youtube for over 10 years now, but I only started watching him a few months ago. I started with this playlist when I saw he was doing The Neverhood, a game I had heard about but never seen played before. The Neverhood is a bizarre game, as a point and click PC game from the 90s where the entirety of the video game was made with stop motion and clay. Something that sounds so insane you would say it’s impossible if not for the fact that it exists. The claymation itself is extremely well done, and the game has a really weird and absurd sense of humour. Just the strangest things happen in this thing. Now couple that with Vinny’s very dry and straightforward delivery and you have probably one of the funniest Let’s Plays I’ve watched in a long time.

This is also “short” for a Let’s Play series. With only 4 parts to it, the longest video only being a bit under and hour and 30 minutes. It’ll still take up a good chunk of your time, but it’s not as daunting as some of the other Let’s Plays I’ll mention on this list.

Team Four Star: Pokemon Shield Nuzlocke

Exactly what it says on the tin. The guys from Team Four Star play Pokemon Shield with Nuzlocke rules. They’ve done several Nuzlocke runs in the past, but I find the Pokemon Shield is the best one they’ve done. Especially since a lot of the needless fluff and grinding has been edited out. So unlike some of their previous series you don’t see a lot of Kieran and Grant running in a circle for an hour trying to catch a specific pokemon or trying to get to a certain level.

It’s also hilarious as they have a lot of “house rules” for the Nuzlocke often involving the exercise bike they.... have..... for some reason.

It’s very good and the gym battles become SUPER hype with the Nuzlocke rules and the music.

Baywatching

Having been going to a few years now, watch Allison try her very best to go through and do a video series where she talks about summarises every episode of Baywatch.

.... Ever. Single. Episode.

She’s not even close to done yet (and now she’s introduced Baywatch Nights AS WELL) but her trying to explain the batshit insanity of this show, it’s over the top characters, it’s insane plots and behind the scenes weirdness with all the enthusiasm and love for this slice of 90s is amazing. Please enjoy a good thick chunk of inside jokes, silly character voices, and a whole lot of ?????

Brutal Moose: Shenmue

Probably one of the most chill channels on all of Youtube, Brutal Moose aka Ian, prefers playing games you wouldn’t think would make for good Let’s Plays. And maybe they don’t, objectively. A collection of playlists covering Truck Simulator, Nancy Drew, Hidden Object games etc etc, spliced in with old commercials from drive in theaters from the 50s,60s and 70s. Ian’s Let’s Play channel is great for just putting on and letting play for company while you’re drawing or grinding in a video game or playing Stardew or something.

I recommend his Shenmue playthrough as Ian completely fell in love with the game and went on to play both the sequel and the newly released third game. Ian genuinely adores the weird voice acting and all the menial tasks and mini-games you can do. I watched this a lot in 2018 when I was going through a rough time, and it really helped me in a strange way to just put Ian on and listen to him talk to the chat and drive a forklift around for like 4 hours straight before going to Tomato Mart or wasting all his money on the gacha machines.

A Measured Response to “In Defense of Dark Souls 2″

At some point, big name youtuber Hbomberguy made a video called “In Defense of Dark Souls II”. I’m not subscribed to Hbomberguy but I enjoyed his video on why Sherlock (the BBC show) is trash. (come to think of it I should have added that to the first list). And it seems the video on Sherlock was really good and well argued.... and it seems his “In Defense of Dark Souls 2″ video... was not.

Using subjective language, bad representation of facts, or simply outright getting certain information wrong, Hbomberguy′s video on Dark Souls II is, at best, a man trying to argue that he likes Dark Souls II because it is “Objectively good”, rather than simply accept he likes it... because he likes it.

MauLer is kind of an asshole, but I have learned more about dissecting someone’s argument and deconstructing what they have said watching his response series than I have in any english or debate class I have ever had.

The response is over 10 hours long, but this is because MauLer takes time with each and every statement he takes umbrage with, discussing what is being said, discusses why it is false or dubious, and then compares with actual facts and research.

If you ever want to know how to to distinguish subjective opinion from objective fact in someone else’s argument regarding... ANYTHING really, I highly recommend this series.

I may not like MauLer as a person, but DAMN if he doesn’t know how to deconstruct an argument in a logic, emotionless way.

John Wolfe: Maize

Maize is a stupid game. a Stupid stupid game.

It involves sentient corn, and underground secret genetics lab, a Russian bootleg teddy bear that hates everyone, sentient corn, and a crumpet.

This game IMMEDIATELY went on my wishlist after watching this playthrough. Please watch John try and figure what the actual fuck is going on in this Monty Python-eque weird black comedy. It’s stupid, it’s weird, it’s bizarre and it’s honestly one of the funniest games I’ve seen streamed.

Hollywood: a Celebration of the Silent Era

This is not a youtube playlist. I mean it IS, but what this actually is, is a TV series released in the UK in 1980 covering the Silent Film era. As it was made in 1980, it includes interviews with many of the silent film stars who were often still alive during this documentary’s production. Each episode covers a specific theme of the silent movie era. One episode is about comedies, one is about WWI, one is about Westerns etc etc.

It’s a fascinating series, because it focuses on the silent era which, in modern day, I think many people unfairly think of as “those first few years of movies before movies really became a thing.” And that’s such a shame and really not true. The artistry, camera tricks, and raw nature of this early era of film making is so important and produced films which can still be watched today easily, possibly even easier than a few modern movies as often the very fact that the films are silent means they are universal, regardless of what language you speak.

I think an episode or two might have been turned to private or copyright claimed in this playlist, but I know if you do a search on youtube you can find the episode uploaded by someone else.

Diamanda Hagan: Bonekickers

Bonekickers is the show Mathew Graham made before he went on to work on the new Dr. Who. It is about archaeologists and it is God-fucking-Awful.

It is.... look. Ok. I like Archaeology a lot. But this isn’t a show that’s bad “if you like history” or “if you know things about archaeology”. This show is bad because it doesn’t make a single fucking lick of sense, all the characters are awful and terrible, and even if you understand what’s going on in the story you’re still going to be screaming “WHY????” at the screen as each new baffling stupid piece of the puzzle slots into place.

Diamanda Hagan has 0 time for this garbage and she’s going to walk you through each episode to show you how truly horrible this piece of garbage is.

Cry Plays: Ori and the Blind Forest

With Ori and the Will of the Wisps releasing recently, now is a great time to go and watch Cry playthrough the first Ori game. an absolutely gorgeous piece of work with a beautiful soundtrack and really likeable character designs and a sweet story, Ori is a great game to put on, sit back, and just let it wash over you. Cry’s playthrough is also great because although its a Metroidvania game, Cry fast forwards the parts where he backtracks for a long period of time, so you don’t get stuck watching him run back and forth as he tries to figure out where to go next or anything like that.

Cry also recently started playing the sequel as well!
