i felt inspired by my friend @ladynephthyss to make a gif set since i’d never done one before but wanted to - so i chose my favorite elisabeth production, pia’s last performance in essen in 2002! i love how it’s all potrayed, to me it’s just so beautifully and well done! can you tell i tried to keep a blue motif? all clips are from a recording on youtube, though i can’t seem to link it right now.!

Elisabeth von Österreich, auch Sisi genannt, bewunderte den deutschen Dichter Heinrich Heine. Sie beteiligte sich finanziell am geplanten Heine-Denkmal in Düsseldorf und wollte ihrem Lieblingspoeten Tribut zollen. Obwohl Heine aufgrund seiner Aussagen umstritten war, blieb Sisi eine treue Verehrerin.

change my mind

for the life of me I can’t understand why everyone loves empress Elizabeth of Austria.  When I was born my mother named me “sisi” because she really liked those Romy Shneider movies where Elizabeth was sold as “the compassionate people’s empress”. Now it’s been years since I started researching her for myself and yet I still can’t understand what the hell did this woman do besides having a tiny waist and nice hair. The more I learn about Elizabeth the more I find her insufferable.  I understand that she lived in a sexist society and science at that point wasn’t developed enough to give her the mental health support she needed, but damn that woman was selfish and self-absorbed to a fault. she had enormous privilege and yet couldn’t turn it into anything good.

Today’s media portrays her as a Diana predecessor.  A woman whose fierce heart contrasted with the stuffiness of the royal court but this narrative isn’t true for either of the aforementioned women.  at least lady D was very good at charity work, Empress Elizabeth was very happy in her fancy villas, traveling around Europe, writing self-congratulatory poems, and being completely oblivious to her children's needs or her duty as an empress.

So it seems to me that she’s still known only because she was pretty, but I'm desperate to change my mind. soooo if anyone would care to educate me on the matter I’d be very happy to learn.

It's almost New Year but better late than never, so happy holidays to those who celebrated! I spent my Christmas watching Elisabeth-related movies and making bracelets, so here are some short comments on each:

I rewatched Sissi (1955), and I liked it even more than the first time I saw it! This time I was able to appreciate it as a story on its own than as an adaptation, and honestly? It deserves to be a classic. Seventeen years-old Romy Schneider was ACTING, her performance during the cotillon scene is just chilling, show that part of the movie with no context to someone and I doubt they'll think it's the scene in which true love triumphs. Also Franz Josef is a jerk on this one lol he really was sneaking to make out with a peasant girl he just met in the middle of the forest the day he was supposed to get engaged?? Ughhh

The other movie I watched was Elisabeth, Kaiserin von Österreich (1972), a docufilm of the empress' life, starring Marisa Mell. It had no subtitles so I can only judge it based on ~vibes~, but overall it was ok. It's very short for the time it covers (almost fifty years in only 1 hour and 20 minutes) so the pacing feels incredibly rushed. The make up and costume department commits some atrocious crimes, like the eyeliner and eye shadow Elisabeth has on literally every scene, but it also has some great hits, like the recreation of the Hungarian coronation dress. Speaking of the coronation, this movie has the best portrayal of it I've seen so far (correct dress + the consort crown being placed on Elisabeth's shoulder). I can't say much of the acting since I don't know what the characters were talking about, but it surprised me how level headed this Elisabeth seemed: the only part where she looses control of her emotions is in the Capuchin Crypt after Rudolf's death. She is usually portrayed as very emotional (specially during her teenage years, which is historically accurate), so this was an interesting choice. I can't say much of it but I think it's worth the watch.
