British Columbia is set to receive $733 million in new federal funding over the next five years to improve health care for the province's seniors. The funds will help expand home and community care, improve access to palliative and end-of-life services and improve the quality of long-term care, the federal and provincial health ministers announced Monday. Federal Health Minister Mark Holland said it is the first agreement on aging with dignity in the country. "We have an aging population, but we have to rise and meet that challenge," he said during a news conference.

One of my passions is the work I do with a small non-profit called Spirit Lake Wellness, dedicated to educating the general public as well as health care and mental health care professionals about wellness on a wide range of topics. The podcast is part of that outreach and we recently relaunched it after a hiatus.
This episode discusses pain management during end-of-life care. Trigger warnings for discussions of death, addiction, and opiates.

"Because Death is as Sacred as Birth" - The Death Midwife
This quote resonated with my soul's love vibration. So often, birth is reversed and celebrated. I believe death should also be honored. Meaning, it is the beginning of new dew drops falling from a lotus flower. And, that death is really:
• Pure love
• Pure forgiveness
• The end of pain
• Reunion with Spirit
• Meeting with Light
And, nothing to be fearful about. Couldn't be happier in end-of-life care

My sister, Pam, got utterly heart breaking news today. Her 11 year old weiner dog, Mic, had a mass rupture in his mouth today and has to be put down tomorrow. Between his age and his issues with anesthesia, he would not survive treatment and this is the kindest option we have for him.
Tonight, we’re going to lay blankets and towels on the couch and give him as much love as possible and let the kids say their final goodbyes before his appointment in the morning.
His final vet bills are going to be over $300 and we would appreciate any help in laying Mic to rest. Donations can be made directly to Pam at the following:
Thank you.

this week sucks and it's only wednesday :c
having emergency stuff with my cat, her appetite went way down over the weekend so we took her to the vet asap (since it's super dangerous for cats to not eat) and they told us she was in congestive heart failure and might also have cancer (but we'd need to do an ultrasound to be sure and the heart stuff was more pressing). they sent us home with anti-nausea/appetite stimulant meds since she needs to eat (but no meds b/c they wanted the cardiologist to determine what sort of heart failure it is). then last night she went into respiratory distress so we had to take her to the er to get her stabilized so she could go to the emergency cardiologist today...
so now we're just waiting on them and hoping? best case scenario she'll be able to live for 6-12 months on heart meds which i know isn't much but i really want that time if it's possible. But it's rough b/c i know that she can also just take a turn for the worse at any point in the treatment i haven't really been sleeping and my partner doesn't have any bg in animal healthcare (i worked as a vet tech for awhile and have always had pets so i have more experience) so he kinda just leaves all the decisions to me so it's all a lot to both hope for good results but steel/prepare myself for bad results (he's also never really been close to a pet death or end of life care, so i just have to be the stoic one and keep it together).

General Inpatient Hospice (GIP) is when pt stays in hospital for hospice. Basically, pt is at end of life and requires care beyond what a nurse can do at home.

Understanding Palliative Care
— And when it may help By Dr. Rachel L. Ombres AHN Caring for people with serious illnesses or chronic conditions is one of health care’s most complicated — and important — challenges. While medicine continues to improve the way we treat diseases such as cancer or heart failure, it doesn’t always do a great job of caring for the things that matter most to patients and their families, such as…

Had to explain to my dad’s nurse that he’s not paraplegic, it’s just that bc of his violent tendencies the last facility kept him drugged and bed bound 24/7 to the point that he no longer has the muscles/strength to stand. And thats a significant difference
