Tumblr media
God why was it so hot?
While you keep hauling what remains of your backpack through the path, the sun beats down on you. Despite pulling off your hoodie, now left in only a shirt, the heat threatens to boil you whole. The sides of your binder digs in slightly and it makes moving another endeavor. The two bottles of water inside your bag are quickly diminishing with every break you take, now only half of one bottle remains.
You groan, eyes becoming hazy with every blink, when suddenly, you spot a chain-linked fence meters in front of you. A shot of energy courses through you as hope rises, quickly jogging to the area while you wave your hands, but trying not to make a sound in case any infected comes running by.
You stopped just shy of the chain link, glancing at the high-voltage sign. You've been electrocuted once, you're not about to get electrocuted twice. You opted to look around instead, glancing at the various put-together houses, and the church in the far corner of the neighborhood. Despite the leaves littering the streets, flowers bloomed encircling the town's middle. You turn your head to find a way in, maybe a chance for you to vault over without getting burned, or maybe dig underneath-
"Turn around."
You freeze. The hairs on your nape start to rise, heart rate following suit as a bead of sweat drops. "Turn around, and drop your bag. Slowly."
You gulp, carefully moving one foot and the other until you fully turn, now face to face with a gun trained at your head, behind it, a man with eyes sharp enough to cut through skin is ready to pull the trigger at sight. Your eyes cautiously glance at the girl behind him, the same vicious stare with a sharp knife in her hand.
As instructed, you slip your backpack and hear it hit the ground, before the man tilts his head, indicating for you to kick it away, and so you did.
"Drop your weapons,"
"I don't have a gun," Your voice wavers, hands shaking slightly as it hovers beside you, a surrender you’re hopeful the man will take. He doesn't.
"Drop anything other than a gun, then," He leaves no room for negotiations. You blink, before taking out the pocket knife and knuckle dusters from your pocket, throwing them to his direction. The guy raises his brow at the items and you shrug, still hesitant despite trying to appear nonchalant.
With the gun still aimed at you, he picks both of the weapons up, storing them, before he stands again. "What's in the bag?"
"Some… Canned food, water bottles, a lighter, other stuff,"
"How did you find this place?"
"I just…" Now that, you wondered yourself. You remembered leaving your group when a sketchy religious guy showed up and everyone started preaching to him, going nowhere in particular, just out of the growing conservative group and somewhere safe. Wandering for weeks before stumbling here, thinking you finally found another group willing to accept your scrappy ass. "I don't know, I don't even know this place existed, I was wandering around then came across…" You tilted your head back to the fence.
A pause. The man then speaks in a hushed tone with the girl, before they both nodded, the girl evidently less cautious after the whispers. "Empty your bag."
You did as so, slowly reaching for the pack and unlatching the top, turning it upside down and letting the contents drop. Bottles, food, plasters, your lighter, a torch, other knick-knacks you couldn't resist picking up, all falling to the ground. When a flutter of paper falls, the girl perks slightly, before she retreats when you noticed. "I-I'm alone-"
"How do we know you're alone?"
Your eyes looked around before you shrug. "I… Got separated from my group. A weird guy joined us and separated some people, and he uh… Kicked me out. Im alone, I promise, I don't have anyone following me from my group or from… Anywhere,"
Another pause. He seems to turn the info around his mind, before he looks back at the girl, she only does the same.
"Alright." He nods, eyeing the clutter on the ground. "Walk, slowly, away from the fence."
Taking steps away from the chain until your position and the man change, you stand far from the fence while he and the girl stands just a meter away. He nods to the girl and she nods back. Now, her dark eyes are focused on you, while the man unlocks the gate to the place.
"What's with the book?" She jerks to the opened pages on the ground.
"Just a journal. Keeps the mind sane," She hums, then you hear a click of the fence being opened. The man ushers the girl in, before he looks back at you, standing defenseless outside just meters away, disheveled and wary. He huffs.
"Get in here, quick,"
Your face beams. "Thank you, so much," You breathe before picking up your bag and contents, then jogging inside and the man locks the gate again.
The neighborhood looks as if lived in, despite the run-down houses except one that stands grand and white a couple of streets down. "You two live here?"
"No, someone we know does," The girl answers. The man begins walking to the house, the girl following loosely behind him, before she turns.
She still has a hint of caution in her eyes, yet she asks, "What's your name? I'm Ellie, that's Joel,"
"Pleasure meeting you Ellie, Joel," Ellie grins, Joel doesn't turn. You give her your name, at which she smiles before looking past you.
"Do you write often?"
"Just for fun, nowhere to publish it anyways,"
She nods. "What do you write about?"
"Stuff I see, birds, leafs, interesting flowers I pass by," You begin walking towards the house as well, following them. "I have pressed dried flowers in there,"
"Pressed dried? Like you have dead flowers in your journal?"
"Sure," You grin as she chuckles, turning around when Joel opens the house's gates and motions for Ellie to stop, so you do too.
"I'm checking inside first. You-" His eyes meets yours, you gulp. "Stay here, look out for any infected,"
"In here? This is basically a fortress,"
"Once I'm done, then I'll call you," You only nod, afraid to aggravate Joel even further. You'd hate to appear annoying to a man that offered you safety.
Minutes pass, you idle outside, taking in the scenery. There are flowers in fitted pots, already dry and dying. The fence that surrounds the house Joel and Ellie still looks put together, the paint scraping would indicate age but otherwise looks fine. There's a brown garage door off the side. You wonder if it stored any vehicles.
Suddenly, Joel storms outside, making you jump. His otherwise stoic face has a sheen layer of pain, of apprehension, before you spotted a piece of paper in his hand. His eyes meet yours for a brief second, before he turns and crumples the paper. You stand to the side, nearing the gates, while Joel takes his time gathering himself. The urge to ask, to comfort, almost overwhelms you before he speaks. "Help me check the car,"
A key dangles in his hand, and you follow suit. He opens the garage door, and you move to the back of what looks like a covered car. Sure enough, once you and Joel pull the cover up, a blue pick-up comes into view. "Nice," you smooth your hand on the rear door. Then suddenly, a sharp bang from the front, Joel closes the engine harder than needed. You gulp.
Contemplation appears on Joel's face again. You didn't dare to move. His eyes search the room, until it lands on something out of your view, on top of a refrigerator. His eyes track down, then he stalks to said fridge and opens it. Seems like he finds what he was looking for and Joel closes it back.
“You can't come with us.”
“What?” It sounded small, way too small to your liking, until you realized it was your voice.
“We’re going to Wyoming, either way there’s no space for-”
“Please, Joel,” You find yourself leaning towards him, your knuckles white on the trunk of the car. “I don't- I have nowhere to go,” Joel opens his mouth to interject before you continue; “And I'm not asking to join you, and Ellie. I just…” You inhale sharply.
“Please let me go with you two, to Wyoming. Then just leave me there.” You blink the growing panic back down. “Just a ride. Then I'll be off your backs. I promise,”
The man standing meters away from you, hand still firmly on the edge of the fridge, eyes dark and stone cold, ponders over your words. You can practically feel the consideration, the slight glance from him when he meets your eyes, before he turns to the door, then back to you. “Just a ride,”
“Just a ride. You have my word.”
Then, painstakingly slow, he nods then walks to exit the garage, making you exhale a relief breath. "Check the fuel, I'll go check on Ellie,"
You simply nodded as he exited the garage. You go and check the fuel from the meter inside the car first, then find it empty. For safety reasons, you think. So you check around the garage for any fuel canisters. You found a couple behind some boxes, so you pulled them out to ready them when Joel needs it.
You deem it enough snooping around so you return to the house, just in time to hear Ellie ask, "So what now?"
You knock on the door lightly, to alert the two, and Ellie glances at you. You two share a look at Joel, before he huffs. “We grab what we can,”
He passes you, taking note of your curiosity, before he goes through the house with you and Ellie in tow. He goes through a couple of rooms, before he pulls at a hatch and it gives in, a staircase leading to what you presume was a basement.
Upon entering, the room is lit up with working LEDs. You and Ellie spotted the wall of guns first, you blowing a low whistle. “Ho-ly shit.” Ellie’s eyes were on the many firearms mounted neatly.
“This guy’s a genius,” She grins and looks around. Your hand reaches for a mounted shock gun, almost touching it, before you retreat when you hear Joel messing with the other things in the room. You noted a steady hum of music, something you could recognize but not pinpoint. Ellie turns to walk over to where Joel was looking at the monitors.
“Why was the music on?”
“If he didn't reset the countdown every few weeks,” His eyes went over something. “This playlist would run over the radios,”
“‘80s…” The two share a look of realization, you can visibly see Joel gulp.
“Grab some cans from over there,” Joel points behind him. “Nothin’ dented, or swollen,” He mainly points it out to Ellie as she moves, but his eyes linger on you so you also get moving.
“Dude,”
“No.” You turn around to spot Ellie standing near the wall of firearms.
“There’s a wall of them,” And she’d be right, but Joel only fixed her a stare that made her nod in defeat, almost making you giggle. Joel goes back to the monitors while you and Ellie search through the cans.
You’ve emptied most of the top shelves, leaving the clearly dented ones, while Ellie picked apart the bottom half, looking at each label with fascination. Once you’ve got your pack full, you crouch near her when she looks at one with interest.
“‘Chef Boyardee’,” You smile as she turns to you. “They got great taste,”
“Is this what you all eat?” She asks both you and Joel as she turns to face him. “Like, before the infection thing,”
“Well, most foods weren't in cans, if that's what you’re asking,” You absentmindedly pick at one of the cans' labels, already peeling. “Big shops, grocery stores, would sell raw stuff so you can cook them,”
“Cook anything?” Her eyes gleam, making you huff out a chuckle.
“Sure, as long as there's a recipe, I for one can't cook for shit,” She chuckles, before putting the can into her bag. As you and Ellie make your way upstairs, you pass Joel whose eyes soften as you let Ellie climb up first.
Ellie found a bag and she scurries off to shove toilet paper in it. You made your way into the bathroom to find the medicine cabinet fully stocked. “Fuck yeah,”
You grab all that your arms can fit and run back to where Ellie was emptying the storage room. Setting all the medicine and emergency kit into the bag, you head back to look under the sink of the bathroom to find a couple of tampons and pads. Another victory. As you reach your hand into the cabinet, a roll of body tape falls out. Checking back to hear Ellie's busy with her work, you stuff the tape into your pocket and head out with the packs of pads and tampons.
Ellie looks up from where she’s hunched inside the storage area. “Hell yeah,” She nods as you stuff the packs into the bag.
Joel emerges from the bunker and heads upstairs just as you and Ellie finish filling up the bag. Ellie follows Joel and so do you, still contemplating what the girl is to Joel or who Joel is to Ellie. Though you shrug it off when Joel opens a door into a worn room, decorations vary on the walls but he beelines into, what you presume, is a closet. He opens it and looks around, clicking a light on, before he settles on a box and pulls it out, setting it on the bed.
The box is labeled ‘Women's shirt, SM-MED’ so Ellie looks through it. She pulls out a red shirt that she fits over her front to make sure, before she glances at you. You only nod in approval, giving her a thumbs up, making her grin and set the article aside.
Joel emerges with a box labeled ‘Long Sleeve Shirts’ and goes back in. You stood opposite of Ellie between the bed, hesitant to touch the box, before Ellie took it first and opened it. She notices your hovering hand and falters on the flaps. “Oh, you wanna take this one?”
“Those won't fit him,” Joel barks from inside the closet, almost making you jump. But instead, his tone is like poking fun at you, so you roll your eyes, huffing.
“Haha, real funny man,” Your hand reaches back for the box Ellie was opening, before another box abruptly drops next to your hand, affectionately labeled ‘Mens shirt, SM-MED’.
“This could,” His eyes met yours before he ducks back into the closet.
You stand, almost in shock, elevated from both relief and happiness as it blooms inside you. The box is still closed, sitting just far from you, and the label almost makes your eyes gloss. You swallow a heavy lump, before you notice Ellie's fleeting glance from you to the box, then back to you. “Go ahead dude, those would be way too big for me,” She shrugs.
And so you went through the box and picked out the articles you deemed good enough to fit your form.
After sorting through the box of clothes, the three of you make your way into the garage. You stand near the door in order to not step in Joel's way while Ellie pokes around, but if you were being honest with yourself, you just wanted to admire the dynamic between Ellie and Joel. Joel has found an all-purpose charger, hooking it up to the car battery. After a minute, the charger begins to work as he surveys it. “Needs another hour,”
“They have hot water!” Ellie cheers as she turns on a faucet from the other end of the room. “I’m takin’ a shower,” She declares as she begins to make her way to where you're standing.
“Then you’re showering, cuz’ seriously,” She huffs, making a disgruntled face at Joel, which made you chuckle. Joel only deadpans as she moves past you. “You too!” She hauls back as she absentmindedly points in your direction.
That made both of your eyebrows shoot up, sputtering for an answer. Your eyes briefly meet Joels, a slight smirk tugging on his lips, before you yourself huffed out a laugh. “I should…” You falter, unable to think of an excuse, before jogging to join Ellie in the house.
Ellie finished her shower quickly, clad in the red shirt she picked and the long sleeves she must've taken out of the box. When she exits the room to find you waiting in the hallway, your pile of clothes a bit taller than her, and arches a brow. “A lot of layers,”
“I get cold easily,” You shrug, making her nod and promptly go downstairs.
After making sure the door locks, you start to discard your tattered clothes, pulling out your hoodie to also discard it, sticky with grime and dirt. You carefully set your binder on the sink and finally relish the feeling of steady water beating down your body.
Once you’re dry with a towel hanging on your hips, you take out the body tape and fasten a makeshift binder, not too tight to avoid any mishaps. Your dirty binder has been washed under the faucet, so it's now wrung dry enough to be in a plastic bag and shoved into your pack. You put your hair in a towel wrap while you put on deodorant, then the clothes you picked out, zipping up the pants and fastening a belt around it. Pulling on the top, then a t-shirt over it, before a jacket to top it off. You pull off the towel from your hair, leaving it damp enough for it to dry in the wind.
As you walk to the door, a mirror stands just next to it. You spot your reflection, no longer with streaks of dried blood and dirt, hair array from days without proper cleaning. A man with deep eye bags but an otherwise put-together demeanor stares back. You smile, arranging your drying hair a bit, before exiting the room.
You meet Ellie downstairs, looking around and touching the various items scattered about the still-warm house. You make your way to the dining table, and the unfinished food on the table makes a gnawing feeling in your gut appear. Not the rotting stench, but something significant happened here, if you could judge the wine glasses sat neatly next to each other, now supporting dust instead of its usual amber contents. You swallow down the feeling of what has happened and instead take a seat in the vacant area of the table, pointedly away from the rotting food. As Ellie paces around, you take out your book, flipping through the pages of various notes and entries you’ve written.
You pick out one dried lily you pressed months ago. “See? Dead flowers,” Ellie turns to you, before she spots the flower you’re holding and chuckles.
“There's a lot out front y’know,” She adds. You hum and nod, before returning back to your pages.
Joel enters the house just as you turn a page. You smile, nodding to the stairs behind the dividing wall. “Showers all yours,” You said. He assesses you, taking a second too long which makes you break eye contact, our eyes back to your book, a steady heat growing on your face. Then he glances at Ellie before he nods and heads to the stairs. Ellie gives you a look once, twice, before she smirks and continues her poking.
A couple of minutes passes, before you hear a sequence of steps, a muffled ‘oh shit’ maybe coming from Ellie, then you pick your head up from the deep pages and find Ellie standing in front of Joel, combed back curls, highlighting his steadily graying edges, beard shaved neatly, a fitting plaid t-shirt and dark jeans are what he picked from the box, it seems. “Well, don't you look pretty,”
“I agree,” Ellie joins before you can explode from the embarrassing compliment you sputter out.
“Shut up,” Joel answers, throwing the deodorant you wore earlier into Ellie’s hands. You don't miss the tint of red on Joel's ears, highlighted by the sun coming from the front door.
“Nice,” She begins to put it on, before you gape.
“Wait, you didn't put it on?”
“What, I didn't see it!” She retorts, putting the cap back on.
“Ellie, ew,” The girl throws the deodorant at you, which you caught easily, both of you giggling.
“Come on you two,” Joel huffs from the door. Ellie quickly puts her pack on as you put your book inside yours, securing it on your back.
You help Joel with the gear on the pick-ups tub, making sure it’s secured and putting the water-proof tarp over it. Joel and Ellie get in the car as you open the garage door, then slide in yourself into the back seat. Ellie’s eyes practically shine as she prods at the car's dashboard, pulling down the vanity mirror, then messing with the rearview before she pushes it, promptly displaying you in the backseat and Joel next to her.
“It’s your first time in a car?” He stares at the curious girl.
“It’s like a spaceship,” She answers, still in a trance as she prods at the AC flap.
“No, it's like a piece of shit Chevy S10,” Joel’s answer makes you chuckle from the back seat, rearranging your pack. “But it’ll get us there, I think.”
“Seatbelt,” Ellie turns to Joel, a slight confusion in her eyes, before Joel sighs and pulls the belt over her then hands the rest to Ellie. “Seatbelt.”
She grins, then clicks the seatbelt in place. “So cool,”
You grin from where you’re sat, Joel spotting you from the rearview mirror, your eyes meet briefly which makes you duck your head, settle into the seat and promptly look out the window. Joel starts the car and it hums to life, you can feel the engine purring from the recharged battery and fuel.
Ellie fumbles and opens the compartment under her, pulling out a cassette tape. Joel notices the girl grinning from what she found. “Would ya leave it,”
“Put it back. Ellie,” Joel's exasperated tone only spurs Ellie more as she slides it into the radio, already pressing play. Your grin matches Ellie's as a melody begins to fill the car, eyes on the various houses you pass. Ellie clearly doesn't recognize the song, her hand reaching for the stop or skip button, before Joel perks up.
“No, no, leave it. This is good,” He says, turning the car to where the gate is meters away. “This is Linda Ronstadt, y’know who Linda Ronstadt is?”
“You know I don't know who Linda Ronstadt is,” Her deadpan expression makes you chuckle, leaning into the comfy seat as you settle into the song. Joel, as if looking for support, spots you from the rearview and arches a brow. You only shrug with a smile on your lips, nodding.
“Oh man,” Joel glances at the radio, the gate already in front of the car.
“Eh, it's better than nothing,” Ellie smiles, glancing out to the glowing fields, the evening sun already basking its shine on the earth. You sigh, entranced by the singer's voice, clearly to Joel's liking. He pushes the code for the gate and it opens. He puts the remote back, and advances forward, into the road in front.
It's been months since your first meeting with Joel and Ellie.
Now, settled into Jacksons easy living commune, you live just next door to Joels and Ellies.
You remembered when they both left some weeks ago, something about looking for a lab, but you didn't catch why. You remembered the way Ellie clung to you as they were getting ready to leave. She's grown fond of you, sharing the same humor and references, even if you’re still years older than her. So when her hands shook as it digs into your jacket, you pull her closer as well, letting her bury her head into the crook of your neck. Then you pressed a kiss on her forehead, mumbled ‘Stay safe,’ before she let go then headed to her horse. Then there was Joel.
Joel, who you were once scared of. Who you helped with gathering wood for the fire. Who you shared breakfast with the morning after leaving those houses. Who you caught smirking at Ellie's joke. Who you ran with when Wyoming went to shit. Who let you stay with him and Ellie without you asking, moving through that insane city until you found the brothers. Who you watched bury them when Sam turned. Who was the gracious ticket that let you into Jacksons.
Whom you’ve grown feelings for.
When he was about to leave, you were hesitant to touch him. Anything beyond a helping hand on his arm or shoulder was a breach, so you’ve always kept your hand to yourself. That's what you thought until Joel pulls you into him, almost pushing all of the oxygen out of you. You returned the embrace with equal strength, blinking away the worry gathering in your eyes. It lasted long enough before he pulled back and joined Ellie on the horse. The massive gates opened just slightly, before the two exits, unknown to you how long they’ll leave. Or if they’ll even come back.
But they did, with the two closer than ever.
Now, the three of you simply live in Jacksons. A shout away from each other. Sometimes Ellie would come by, unannounced of course, and hang on your couch while you do chores. Sometimes she’ll look around your collection of books that you salvaged from each import of stuff every month. She’ll find something that interests her and borrow it, bringing it back to her house. On the rare chance that you cook, she’ll stay to eat, asking if you made the food yourself or if it came from a recipe. You'd bat at her arm, saying ‘Of course it’s from a recipe Ellie, y’know I’ll burn the house down.’ And she'll laugh.
Sometimes she brings Joel over. He stays for coffee while Ellie is busy with something. Sometimes you two talk, about something or nothing. About the on-goings of Jacksons. About your shift at the community school and theater. About his shifts on patrols and fixing up old buildings for repurposes. Sometimes just to sit and drink, basking in the pure joy of watching Ellie scuttle around, finding things of interest, and asking you questions about your latest project. Those times are when he’ll shuffle closer, hesitant near your lax stance as you laugh at what Ellie said. He’ll put his cup down and carefully, oh so slowly, brush his hands against yours, and you’ll blink, red steadily growing up your neck. You smile then, relaxing your hand, letting Joel set the pace. Then finally, in the privacy of your house, between Joel and you, he laces his fingers with yours, the warmth of his hands burns yours. But you endure, even welcoming his slightly shaking hold, and you’ll squeeze tight. You turn your head to meet Joel's dark browns, the creases on the side of his eyes dent slightly as he smiles, and you smile too, dropping your head to his broad shoulder.
Then Ellie would look at your entwined hands and scoff. “That's so gay,”
Joel would immediately cross his arms while he retorts that she is also gay, and Ellie would quip back another snarky response. You’d laugh, holding your middle and trying not to stumble from where you stand.

Mutant Mashup HCs
Mutant Mashup AU by me and @sillyandquest
Simoni convinces Casey Jr. to play Minecraft. Home boy was so confused about everything at first. But now they do it on weekends regularly. Jr. has made statues for the future turtles in all the worlds he play in
All of the turtles love Jupiter Jim, even if Sanzio tries to deny it. Although only DaVinci and Blue are huge fans of Space Heroes. It’s their thing
Yoshi trained all the turtles, including the Rise kids. Lou (due to his mental state and Yoshi considering him a disgrace) wasn’t too involved with the training, but showed them all his movies so they all have picked up some things from those movies
Simoni has an electric based nippō
Purple and Sanzio are secretly running a bunch of cons in the hidden city
May (2012 April) managed to tame a kraang dog and the beginning of the apocalypse, so Casey Jr. grew up with a kraang dog. When he gets sent back, May manages to tame it again and it stays alive after the Rise kraang leave. So Casey Jr. gets his pet back :D
I imagine there’s plots that didn’t exist in either Rise or 2012 solely because characters now exist in the same world. (Example: The 2012 Purple Dragons somehow get into Big Mama’s debt, Meatsweats attacks Mr. Murakami because “nO ONe’s AlLOwEd To MAkE bETTeR FOod tHEn ME *crying baby auto tune*”, or Foot Recruit and Miwa/2012 Karai being girlbosses together, etc)
Of course we have Medic Blue, but I haven’t seen too much on the general fanon on who’s the medic in 2012. So my personal HC is that it’s Raph. Source: He literally gives Donnie a tourniquet in that one ep. Anyways Blue and Sanzio are ✨the medic duo✨ Yoshi is both the hardest on Blue because he’s afraid of him turning out like Lou, and joke with him the most because they’re both trolls and play around like that. Sanzio will absolutely kill bitch if they touch Purple’s shell without permission. The fact that’s so vulnerable compared to everyone else’s freaks him out a bit. Why is it so easy to break???
On a related note: Sanzio physically fights Purple the lest due to his Soft-Shell Privileges. Does Not stop him from verbal attacks at all, which they do the most out of everyone
Lou holds resentment to Yoshi for seemingly being unaffected by their mother leaving them. He also lost contact with Shredder before he gots too bad and is still a little in shock about his turn.
Baron Draxum created the ooze that mutated Yoshi and the 2012 turtles, so they all get the Draxum Clutch™️ as well.
Hueso went to Mr. Murakami‘s restaurant as per the turtles request, and now he’s a regular. Mr. Murakami knows he’s a skeleton but just casually accepts he’s serving to a bunch of creatures. As long as they behave he doesn’t mind
Casey Jr. was very close to his uncle Casey (2012) but doesn’t really know how to approach him in the present. He’s so different. At least the kraang dog is more or less the same.
Yoshi forbade all the turtles from going outside, but they all snuck out around the time Orange was 3-4ish. Lou know but has been letting them do it in a “haha don’t tell your dad/uncle or we’re all in trouble” move

What is wheel of time and should I start it tomorrow?
you SHOULD.
Wheel of Time is an epic fantasy series by the late Robert Jordan. It's epic in scope, in length, and in its insanely large cast of characters. It's fascinating. The worldbuilding is insane, but also familiar (partly because it relies on widespread fantasy tropes, partly because it made many of those tropes popular for many books published later). The characters are exasperating but deeply human; I love SO many of them and appreciate so many others. It's very Of Its Time in some regards, especially re: its handling of gender roles and sexuality, but it's also surprisingly progressive and queer in intent even when the execution falters, and I really appreciate a lot that it even tried to Go There, because it was Very formative for me as a young teen. It's also one of those books where you can see the author's kinks all over the place (both narrative and otherwise) and tbh? it's a bit cringe but lots of fun. Also it’s very well written; the plot is as Epic as epic fantasy gets but it’s really the character moments that make the reader invested in the story. I just love it a lot, ngl.
Fun fact: I am now today on tumblr dot com, blogging in english, because sometimes around age 15 even though I fucking hated english class in school I just couldn’t wait for the latest books to come out in my country so I had to become fluent enough to read a 700-pages novel by myself. THAT is the grip this series had on me.
Some things I am now into because of reading WoT starting at age eleven.
codependent magical bonds with loyalty kink thrown in (if you’re familiar with TLT, think necro/cav but usually f/m. Not always though :) )
femdom. both F/f and F/m varieties
Propesized Savior trying to kill their humanity to become a figure larger than history (before realizing that's bullshit)
what if monastic(ish) order of sole women but also we had sex about it
unfortunately. a lot of weird kinks. I will elaborate on request but it’s better if I don’t right off the bat.
no, I lied. It wasn’t unfortunate. I appreciate it when authors are brave enough to let the banner of their id fly high
ruined civilizations and newer, less advanced civilizations rising from the wreckage. the collective understanding that you live in a post-apocalypse world. old scientific principles becoming magic
confronting your alternate dimension self, as a treat
dream sex
devil-may-care rogues who actually care a lot

“I know what my destiny is but I say: fuck you”
I can’t stress enough how many of my kinks (narrative; sexy in fiction only; sexy in RL) came directly from this series. Like, I know I’ve already said that but putting together this list made me think and. Oh my god.
SWORD MAIDENS
More practical information: there are 14 books. Yes, I know. The first book is The Eye of the World - it's fun and probably not exceptional even though you can feel the hints of how grand and insane the greater worldbuilding will be, and some characters really shine (Nynaeve!). The second book is where it really gets original, the third book is where I went from "books I like" to "series OF ALL TIME". If you don’t like it by book 4 then give up. If you like book 4 as much as I did you will never ever want to give up.
There's also an Amazon Prime show, currently S1 has been released! I haven't watched it beyond the first ep, but plan to do it soon; it's a lot more f/f than the books and the back half had some pacing issues (partly due to COVID fucking with the production) but definitely very iddy from what I've heard, and I’m very excited to check it out in time for S2.
tldr PLEASE read wheel of time!

What are your k drama recommendations??!? I need new ones
omg my time has come thank you anon for giving me the opportunity to ramble about shows
I ended up talking WAY too long so I'm putting everything after the first one under the cut
all of us are dead- show about high schoolers as a zombie apocalypse starts. very funny and relatable, literally they call the police and are like 'have you seen train to busan?' bffrrn. has a lot of social commentary and there are references to the sinking of mc sewol (a cruise that sunk where the captain deserted it and left a large amount of high schoolers to drown). commentary about how adults save themselves first/leave youth to fend for themselves. one of my comfort shows and although they didn't intend for more seasons, it was received so well that they have been renewed! I am also an ot4 truther and sometimes talk about them on my international shows sideblog: @nam-on-jo
sweet home- (disclaimer: I am not caught up and have not yet seen s2 which came out a little while ago) honestly I have no idea how to explain this so I'm gonna copy-paste the blurb: as humans turn into savage monsters, one troubled teenager and his neighbours fight to survive and to hold onto their humanity. basically people turn into monsters for [redacted] reasons and everyone in his large apartment building is stuck inside trying to fend for their lives.
my name- I'm just going to paste the blurbs going forward because it's easier: Following her father's murder, a revenge-driven woman puts her trust in a powerful crime boss -- and enters the force under his direction. bro some of these twists I expected but others caught me off guard. I love the main character and am a little gay for her but I think that's valid because she's a bamf. there was a plot point at the end of the second to last episode that I really didn't like and made me very upset. narratively I get why they did it but it made me sad so I'm still pissy. might get around to writing a fix-it fic one day when motivation strikes because my girl deserves better things.
the guest- a detective, a catholic priest, and a psychic join forces to fight crime caused by supernatural forces. not to say they are my ot3 but they kinda are. (other ppl interpret it is a lesbian and her two bi/gay bffs which I also accept but. ot3 tho). LOVED every twist and turn and how the three of them go from not trusting one another to being family. genuinely one of my favorites from all the kdramas I've watched over the years and I want to rewatch it again soon
happiness (tvn)- The residents of a high-rise apartment fight for their lives against a deadly infectious disease while Sae-bom and Yi-hyun try to find the person because of whom the virus spread. bro I adored this. some characters annoyed me (which means they were written effectively) but it has so much. fake dating/marriage (they wanted a better apartment lmao). annoyances to lovers. mean/rude woman soft for sunshine man. what you will do for the people you love. morals and humanity during a catastrophy. *smacks show* you can fit so much into this. no but seriously, I thought this was a really interesting take on the zombie virus! so some of the time you come off completely asymptomatic and 'normal', so people can get away with acting normal and hiding the disease around other people, so the paranoia and mystery is REALLY amped up. had me guessing a LOT. sae-bom and yi-hyun are both cops/detectives and you find out really early (ep 1/2?) that sae-bom is immune which gives a really interesting dynamic that leaves her (to yi-hyun's exasperation and heightened blood pressure levels) to be kinda reckless in the pursuit of truth and salvation. I'm rambling now because this is making me watch to rewatch but yeah as a zombie/dystopia/apocalypse lover this was a good watch. it's more story-focused than violence-heavy which was a cool and refreshing twist
alice in borderland- okay y'all I am aware people had mixed feelings about s2 but overall I did enjoy the series. 'Obsessed gamer Arisu suddenly finds himself in a strange, emptied-out version of Tokyo in which he and his friends must compete in dangerous games in order to survive.' what can I say, I love a dystopian-esque setting.
the silent sea- imma be real, I only watched it for loml bae doona from sense8. 'During a perilous 24-hour mission on the moon, space explorers try to retrieve samples from an abandoned research facility steeped in classified secrets.' basically earth is in severe crisis mode as they run out of water to drink. water has recently been found on the moon, and although there was a mysterious tragedy that happened previously to researchers looking for water in a base on the moon, they have reached a level of desperation where they have another mission to look for moon water. mystery, paranoia, a couple of good twists ensue. I thought it was pretty good even though I have some mixed feelings about the open ending.
semantic error- yes I am sliding a bl into this list. bitch you thought. of course my bl-loving self would mention this (I forgot about it until I looked up good kdramas to remind myself of stuff I have watched). 'A strict, rule-abiding computer science major must work together with an artist with a polar-opposite personality to his.' confident cool boy meets bitch boy. it's great.
and of course...
leverage con artists- I would be fired from running this blog if I didn't mention the beloved korean spinoff of leverage. 'The series follows the story of Lee Tae-joon, a former insurance investigator who forms a team of thieves and con artists to target the rich and wealthy. The team was also formed to avenge Tae-joon's son's death.' I've posted about it before so I won't go super into it but it's VERY camp, a good time, and the ot3 is alive and well. debatable more overt than their predecessor!
other mentionables:
I tried watching kingdom (again for bae doona) but couldn't really get into it. might try again later because it's critically acclaimed (I think) and has even gotten a spinoff series
my roommate really liked mr queen. I didn't really pay attention when we were in the same room and they were watching it but it's fruity
the island on amazon prime was good! interesting plot but not in my top 10 or anything. worth a watch if you're looking for a kdrama to watch in your spare time. features girlboss businesswoman being thrown into a world of the supernatural because [redacted]. supernatural black horse man keeps her safe while keeping a life-changing secret.
let's fight ghost was a thai show that I saw and loved that was adapted into a kdrama called bring it on ghost, but honestly I couldn't get through it because I liked the thai one better.
train to busan is technically a movie but it's iconic and well-known and I highly suggest watching it if you like zombie/apocalypse movies. disclaimer: kdramas do not have the slow 'walker' zombies. they are fucking fast and the stuff of my nightmares. would probably just jump off a bridge if this actually happened ngl
I did think that extraordinary attorney woo was cute. I never finished it and know that there are VERY valid criticisms about the perpetuation of media portraying people with autism in the stereotypical savant ways. however, I liked how the love interest accepted her for who she was, loved her because of who she was and made efforts to accommodate and learn how to comfort her in ways that would work for her
business proposal was pretty decent if you like lighthearted romance- I didn't finish it but would like to at some point
tale of the nine tailed was another one that my roommate and I started watching but never finished. it was alright! just lost interest
shows on my watchlist:
black knight (netflix)- 'In a dystopian future devastated by air pollution, the survival of humanity depends on a group of deliverymen known as the Black Knights who navigate the wastelands using unconventional means.'
copycat killer-
hellbound (netflix)-
shop for killers (hulu)- 'A nephew who lost his parents and grew up in the hands of an uncle who runs a shopping mall faces a new truth after his uncle's sudden death.'
the legend of the blue sea (viki + hulu)- 'A magistrate's plan to release mermaids into the ocean backfires when they're caught by fishermen.' (legit I just miss mermaid media)
gyeongseong creature (netflix)- 'In the city of Gyeongseong in 1945, a group of young people thinking only of their own survival encounter a monster born of human greed and ask themselves what humanity is.'
dark hole (viki)- 'A mysterious black fog from a petrochemical factory's sinkhole turns people into bizarre figures; people who are not infected try to survive in this middle of pandemonium.'
the cursed (multiple)- 'An enthusiastic social issues reporter, fighting against the evil hidden behind an IT conglomerate, meets a teen-age girl who is possessed by a spirit and has special abilities.'
blood (multiple)- 'Dr Park Ji Sang believes in the sanctity of human life, and struggles to treat terminally ill cancer patients and save lives while at the same time being a vampire.'
the ghost detective (viki)- 'In this horror thriller drama, a detective who catches ghosts tries to solve the case of his younger sibling's death with the help of his assistant.'
possessed (netflix)- 'A smart-mouthed detective and a reclusive psychic medium join together to get rid of the ghost of a murder who was executed 20 years ago.'
connect (hulu)- 'A man is kidnapped and one of his eyes removed by a gang of organ hunters; his eyes was transplanted into body of a serial killer; the unwilling donor now has terrible visions as he witnesses terrifying attacks on the residents of Seoul.'
and now just because so many of these only have het romances, I looked up k-dramas with lgbtq representation... (some of these recommendations were from articles from screenrant, movieweb, this subreddit, herzindagi (bl-focused), allkpop)
schoolgirl detectives (viki)- 'Five teenage girls join together to investigate mysterious incidents that occur at their school, as well as help classmate deal with bullying, depression and other crises.'
be melodramatic (netflix, viki)- 'Three 30-year-old best friends, Jinju, Eun-jung and Hanju each pursue different paths in both career and love. Despite life's difficulties, the three friends can always return home at the end of the day and support each other.'
lily fever (available w/subtitles on youtube)- 'The story revolves around the budding relationship between Kim Kyung Ju and Jang Se Rang who meet when Kyung Ju can't find her passport and has to go to her friend's house to try and find it.'
love alarm (netflix)- 'In a world in which an app alerts people if someone in the vicinity likes them, Kim Jojo experiences young love while coping with personal adversities.'
nevertheless (netflix)- 'The story of a romance between a man who is annoyed with relationships but likes to flirt and a woman who wants to date but does not believe in love.' (wlw side couple romance)

sorry if this is a stupid question but is the vampire apocalypse an actual thing in the books or a new element added for the show??
Hey!
There are two events in the Chronicles which could fit that definition, and I have theorized before that the show will shape them into one, since it could be too repetitive otherwise.
First, we have Akasha's rising, she went and burnt a lot of the vampires in an attempt to have more control.
And then, there's Amel's awakening, which also results in burnings - though for different reasons.
But both events "prune" the vampire population down to a fraction.
I have theorized before that we saw tendrils of Amel's awakening already with what we saw in ep 5 and 6, but we will probably need 5 seasons to see if that holds :) (I think said apocalypse will take at least season 5 to actually arrive).
So no, it's nothing made up. In both cases the vampire population was ever-multiplying and running wild, too, something which has been hinted at by the "great conversion" imho.
We'll see how they spin it :)

Undead Unluck ep.18 thoughts
[Cramming for Finals]
(Contents: griping - recaps)
Yuki, you're killin' me here...we didn't even get to see the reveal right at the end? Did you really pad out the episode just so you could draw out the joke from the manga and make it seem like it's going to be a dramatic twist, even though you basically revealed it anyway in the preview?
If we never had any recaps before this point, I think I would find this to be an oddly slow but necessary review of the content thus far. In fact, because of how many recaps we had to sit through this episode, it seemed like they were individually speedier than usual to make room for the other recaps
Plus we had a few cute and fun visuals, like having little diagrams to show how the timeline maps out or Fuuko's mini freakout that looked more like something from Trigger than David Pro, so overall this wasn't a bad episode in and of itself. Unfortunately, it was emblematic of everything that's disappointed me so far with this entire series, so it's hard to say that this was a good episode either
There was one thing I really liked though, even if it could have been executed just a little better: the usual dim lighting that we've had the entire series was being slowly illuminated the entire episode until the sun had completely lit up the entire scene, showing the newly invigorated Union facing a new day after the harrowing night. It was kind of weird right at the end, though, since it kind of seemed like it just cut straight to the sun being out rather than having it, say, rise or appear from behind the clouds in a short animation sequence
A lot of this episode felt pretty abrupt like that, like Apocalypse ranting and then suddenly being cut off by the opening theme. As usual, the new content of this episode was solid and everything in between was baffling
I'm also convinced that we must be getting 25 or 26 episodes instead of 24, cus at this pace? I don't think we're getting past Autumn with only 24 episodes. If we took out all these recaps, we'd probably get through Winter and maybe Summer, but with them all here, I feel like we'll be lucky to finish Autumn
Here's hoping that next week's less lore-heavy episode will make a surprisingly decent amount of progress
Until next time, let's enjoy life

My Homeless Save (Freeplay)
This is a save that I'm doing where I'm not doing much of anything on. It's just something to while away the time - while my muse farts off on doing anything regarding my Apocalypse save and my Legacy - (the Legacy is currently stalled - trying to figure out where I should be using "poses" vs. whatever shit that EA gives me in-game).
When am I not using Haruo and River? 🤣 Hey, they're my two favorite sims.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yep...torn clothes...from Supernatural EP
Tumblr media
Starting off with dumpster diving. Gotta find some stuff to consign. They have absolutely §0.00. And they're getting rather hungry.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gotta head down to Central Park for two reasons.
to gross out the rest of the citizens of Sunset Valley whilst trailing a green trail of noxious fumes (body odor).
to try to find something to eat. Hopefully there's some picnic baskets out.
Tumblr media
Looks like the first one they grossed out was Cornelia Goth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Fishing was the next order of the day after grabbing a bite to eat. Yes, I'm using Josh.O's Mass Effect Shepard hair on River. It was the only suitably messy short hair - everything else was too perfectly coiffed.
Tumblr media
The "One with Nature" mod is perfect for homeless challenges (I don't play challenges, I just play...) - it allows you to pee outside...as well as sleep anywhere without the need of a bed or bench. That's one of the only concessions I make for a homeless save. The only thing that this doesn't allow you to do is sleep outside in the rain.
Tumblr media
...and since it was pissing rain outside, Haruo and River had to wait and stay awake until everybody had vacated the recreation center before sneaking in and getting about 3/4s of a night's sleep (until roughly 4AM) before sneaking back out and starting "Monday".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Back out when the sun rises to go collecting. Haruo is collecting gemstones (that have hopefully generated overnight) River on the other hand is going after harvestables.
Tumblr media
The two meet back to eat something. I also have Spherefish's other mod: the Hunting mod. Yep, kill those pesky small pets and at least get something to eat out of 'em. Nothing like a few grilled lizard steaks on the "barbie".
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time for a quick "sponge" bath in the ocean.
Tumblr media
...and a little "intimacy". Hey, when you're somewhat clean...well...
"Hey, you two, just don't add a third person to the problem, eh?"
Tumblr media
The "Sleep Here" feature on the "One With Nature" mod (also by Spherefish).
The only animal in the "Hunting Mod" by Spherefish, that you can't kill is the wild horses and that kinda pisses me off because they're always eating the plants. "Go friggin' eat some damned grass or something."
Tumblr media
Tuesday means picking more harvestables. Gotta get the limes. When they finally manage to build their dream home in this Homeless to Riches, they're gonna have an overabundance of "key lime pie". 🤣
Tumblr media
Yeah, the water is nice.
Watcher: They're going to pop out a third, aren't they?
Tumblr media
Wednesday morning - breakfast - time to eat some of the fish they've been collecting...before it starts to stink. (I don't think that stuff goes bad in inventory...however... it should though - would be more realistic).
Tumblr media
Damned cockatoos - well at least this one gave up a roast.
Tumblr media
Fishing together at the falls on Wednesday. Minimum § to classify as rich is §2,500,000.00 (adjusted in NRAAS Story Progression (Money)).
Minimum § to be able to build their first dwelling is §500,000.

hitsukarin as my favourite xianxia otps for this upcoming halloween! xianxias are usually chinese dramas, about cultivation, immortals (demons and/or heavenly beings) and mortals, and three loves three lifetimes. they also tend to be long.
eternal love of dream. karin is the sole red nine-tailed fox is in the world. one day, karin is attacked by a savage beast, and ends up getting saved by the first emperor of heaven, hitsugaya toushirou. grateful, and feeling indebted, karin accompanies toushirou to vanquish the demon lord. as the two spend time together, karin realizes her gratitude towards toushirou has slowly evolved into love. unfortunately, toushirou has long forgotten what love is. although the coldest hearts can melt with time, will countless lifeimes be sufficient to bring these two hearts together?
love between fairy and demon. in order to obtain terrible power, hitsugaya toushirou became an emotionless monster. luckily, the god of war managed to seal him away before he could destroy the world. legend has it that if hitsuagaya toushirou were to escape, the world would be in danger once more, and only the goddess of xishan can prevent this catastrophe, but unfortunately, she's vanished without a trace. 30,000 years later, karin, a weak and low-ranking flower fairy, accidentally stumbles into the dimension where hitsugaya toushirou is trapped, and their encounter sets off a chain of events that threaten to change the fate of the world once again.
love and redemption. 1000 years ago, a cosmic battle between the demons and heavens took place, and the souls of the god of war and the star of mosha/devil star, were sent to the mortal realm to serve penance. in present day, karin is deprived of her six senses, and meets toushirou, a skilled disciple who wears a mask. discovering that they're born on the same day, the two develop a friendship during a tournament. four years later, they meet again, and while travelling together, recovered memories of their past lives surface, revealing secrets and conspiracies involving themselves and the three realms: demons, heavenly and mortal. these revelations has a profound impact on their relationship, creating an imbalance in all three realms.
till the end of the moon. hitsugaya toushirou is the harbinger of doom and set on bringing the apocalypse. in order to prevent this, karin volunteers to travel back in time prevent toushirou from becoming the fearsome devil lord, back when he was just a mortal man. in the past, karin assumes a new identity, unbeknownst to her, the wife of hitsugaya toushirou, who is a captive and powerless prince of the country they're now in. determined to destroy him, all too aware that he will massacre many, karin tries to understand how he became the figure that she hates. but as she witnesses hitsugaya toushirou's past life and rise to power, another emotion within her begins to complicate her mission.
things of note/brief primer, ig:
3 loves 3 lifetimes explanation. Immortal beings tend to go through trials -- becoming reincarnated as a mortal, live, love, die and become more powerful when they reawaken as an immortal. So life 1 and 3, they tend to be the same person, but some xianxias play around with who is going through the trial in the mortal realm, it doesn't always have to be the mains! Dreams arcs can count as this, TBH. Sometimes more than one trial is necessary, tho.
characters tend to be be dubbed. ML of LBFAD is def. dubbed, FL dubs her own voice. I'm fairly certain ELOD and LAR leads are dubbed, but I haven't confirmed it. TTEOTM, FL and ML are using their own voices. I'd say give the shows you're interested in a couple of eps before you decide continuing/dropping it, FL voices of LBFAD and LAR and ELOD are pretty high pitched, so they might need some time to get used to. Modern day cdramas don't tend to be dubbed, but might if the actor's natural accent is too strong? Whereas as xianxias get dubbed to suit the character more.
I guess these are variations on a theme. There's certain recurring tropes, and not all xianxias focus on lacking senses, but unfortunately, my faves do. They're handled extremely different though!
ELOD works as a standalone, but it does include some references to it's parent story Eternal Love/Ten Miles of Peach Blossom. Here's the thing, the main couple of ELOD are the b-couple of TMOPB, but everything that happens to them in TMOPB doesn't impact ELOD in the slightest, it was just made up content because the the producers didn't have the rights to the book. I don't really like TMOPB's main couple, but I was charmed by the b-couple, even if they get a bittersweet ending in TMOPB. They're characterized slightly differently in ELOD. Same actors tho! Which is nice!
(LBFAD, LAR and TTEOTM are standalone tho.)
They're all based on books! I'm sure you can look them up online, if you want to check them out, though I haven't read them myself. I've heard they do change a lot, though. LBFAD does have a cartoon -- though chinese animation is called donghua -- which apparently is closer to the book. It's still v. cute.
TTEOTM leads have worked previously in a modern day romcom called Love Is Sweet, and they're super cute in it.
TTEOTM is unfortunately truncated. It was supposed to be 60ish episodes, but got cut down to 40 instead. It still works and is cohesive enough, but man, I am sad that there's cut content because I love them most.
LAR relies a lot on misunderstandings, but the charm of the lead couple, who are very soft for each other, will hopefully carry you through it. The worst one is the misunderstood love triangle, IMO? But it's dealt with pretty quickly, considering that this show is pretty long! (Might be a matter of perspective, tho, bc at the time it's a bit of a drag, but I think it's 3-4 episodes long, and it happens early on.) But I was okay with the rest of the misunderstandings, they don't feel as painful? I mean, it's fine, and it suits the characters, but, a little irritating. Angst and the ML suffering to an art form is pretty strong in this one.
LBFAD uses a bit of cgi accessories? IMO they look awful, but they don't get used that much. Nevertheless, whenever SML and the villain wore them, they looked terrible.
Bad wigs are a given. Just a head's up.
There's a lot of bloody mouths/spitting blood in all of them? I think LAR and TTEOTM are the ones where it happens the most, but it is just a recurring trope in xianxias.
I think all can be found on YT, and I wouldn't advise watching them on Netflix/Prime just becomes they don't give out occasional contextual notes. Personal choice, tho, you can look them up on MyDramaList on where else to watch them.

Buffy: He was my first... I loved him, and then he... Mr. Platt: ...changed. She looks up at him, surprised again. Buffy: Yeah. Mr. Platt: He got mean. Buffy: Yes. Mr. Platt: And you didn't stop loving him. Buffy doesn't know what to add or how to respond. Mr. Platt: Look, lots of people lose themselves in love. It's, it's no shame. They write songs about it. The hitch is, you can't stay lost. Sooner or later, you... you have to get back to yourself. Buffy: (considers) And if you can't? Mr. Platt: If you can't... (inhales) Well, love becomes your master, and you're just its dog.

Join The Black Parade: My Chemical Romance And The Politics Of Taste
Daoud Tyler-Ameen | OCTOBER 21, 2016 | npr.org
Sunday is the 10th anniversary of My Chemical Romance's The Black Parade, a defining album for both the band and a generation of pop-punk fans. A decade later, NPR's Daoud Tyler-Ameen is still processing what it means to love this record, and what its impact says about the culture around it.
Click the audio link for his roundtable discussion with Tracy Clayton, host of the Buzzfeed podcast Another Round, and Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib, poet and MTV News columnist — or find it in the All Songs Considered podcast feed. For more on how their conversation came to be, read on.
Common wisdom suggests that the culture you're exposed to in your teens and early 20s ends up informing your taste for the rest of your life. For most people, those years are where the very notion of taste begins. Books, movies, music, fashion, friends: You realize you have options, and you reject the ones that don't match your idea of who you are. The stuff that does stick — be it posters on a wall, patches on a jacket, a dog-eared paperback stuffed in a back pocket — you add to your coat of arms, self-definition by way of curation. What you like informs your understanding of what you are like, and vice-versa.
But every so often, taste leads you somewhere complicated. Sometimes you love a piece of art, but not what that love says about you — and the self-portrait you've so rigorously composed threatens to flake away. This is where I was 10 years ago, when My Chemical Romance released its third album and crowning achievement, The Black Parade.
In 2006, amid the rising tide buoying the fates of Fall Out Boy, Paramore and Panic! At The Disco, My Chemical Romance was as just about as big as it got. This was a boom era for the kind of band whose LPs are stocked at Hot Topic, but the Jersey quintet had always seemed to aim beyond its base. MCR had come out of nowhere with 2004's Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, an album born of hardcore but ringed with enough melody and melancholy that all stripes of emo and pop-punk buffs could find themselves in it, too, resulting in sales that zoomed past Warner Music's 300,000-unit target on the road to platinum status. The record had hits, it had hooks, and it had reach, especially once the cinematic visuals for "Helena" and "The Ghost of You" found their way to MTV. Crucially, it also had a sense of humor — see the video for "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)," in which freaks-versus-jocks teen comedies are skewered with note-perfect precision — which meant I couldn't dismiss the band as some self-serious Marilyn Manson hangover, even if singer Gerard Way did favor eyeshadow and funeral garb. Three Cheers was really, really good, and that was a problem for me.
Emo had found me in 10th grade, when a two-month relationship left me with a bruised heart and a taped copy of The Get Up Kids' Red Letter Day EP, and had followed me to Yale, where I hipped my freshman roommate to Dashboard Confessional. My Chemical Romance's music was not itself the issue — rather, it was the scale of the thing. This band was so popular, so grandiose — and thus, it was also a punching bag, derided as "mall punk" by the same people who had a few years earlier indicted Britney and *NSYNC as signs of the apocalypse. At a moment when mannered indie-pop and roughshod garage-rock were infiltrating the mainstream, MCR was earnest, dramatic and unapologetically massive, in a way that made it conspicuously uncool. And for me — a gawky black kid at a fancy white university, feeling very much stuck between identities — uncool seemed like the worst possible thing to be.
Writer Carvell Wallace has described the struggle this way: "Having black skin but liking white things is a little like walking on a tightrope ... You have white friends with whom you can never talk about race but you avoid groups of black people because you fear they will hear what's in your headphones and call you out as a traitor." Those words come from a Pitchfork Review profile of TV on the Radio frontman Tunde Adebimpe, with whom Wallace had overlapped years before as an NYU undergrad, and identified as a kindred square peg — the kind of black kid who might not take great care of his sneakers but would agonize over which ratty band T-shirt to wear to a party. That's the needle I was threading when MCR arrived in my life: wrapping myself in thrift-store accessories, loudly claiming bands like TV on the Radio as my heroes, positioning myself as the kind of black bohemian (Pharrell and Basquiat come to mind) who can move between cultural groups by dint of the fascination he inspires.
This version of me wasn't a lie, just a selective presentation of the truth. But committing to My Chemical Romance, which in spite of its success was scorned far and wide as mass-market histrionics for sad teens, threatened to shake the myth apart. So I kept my love of Three Cheers to myself. And when The Black Parade arrived, heralded by an orchestral lead single whose video employed period costume, gothic sets and scores of extras, I was mortified — and pushed the band out of my life altogether. I was out of school by then, playing in bands of my own, working office jobs and learning to carry myself as an adult. Even closeted fandom seemed like a bad habit in need of shedding. The inner emo kid, I thought, had to go.
This summer, a cryptic teaser posted to My Chemical Romance's YouTube channel briefly lit up the social web, stoking fevered rumors among those who'd been missing the group since it disbanded in 2013. A day later came the letdown: There was no new album, no reunion tour — just a 10th-anniversary reissue of the record that had come to define the band's career.
Fans took to Twitter to voice their disappointment. Two voices in particular jumped out at me: Tracy Clayton, co-host of the Buzzfeed podcast Another Round with Heben and Tracy, and Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib, a music writer and the author of a remarkable book of poetry called The Crown Ain't Worth Much. Both of them are friends of friends, part of an extended media family that platforms like Twitter have helped to illuminate. Both of them create work rooted in blackness, Tracy in searching interviews that sound unlike any in her field, Hanif in poems that read more like cultural essays, refracting issues like gentrification and police violence through the grammar of hip-hop and pop culture at large. Both of them were legitimately upset that My Chemical Romance was not getting back together. I knew I had to talk to them.
It isn't just that I've come around to The Black Parade in the past year, though that helps: When I finally allowed myself to listen to it all the way through, when I researched its underlying narrative about a cancer patient's journey to the beyond, when I stumbled on live videos of the band dressed in marching gear and corpse paint, the weight of it all hit me over and over and over. The record is a monument, as moving a statement about death as has ever been made. Twenty-two year-old me would have loved it, and loved talking about it. But it may well have taken the media environment of 2016 to show me how to have that conversation — in public, no less.
I don't know how much of this revelation comes from a change in the industry, and how much is just my own senses becoming more finely attuned, but the sheer plurality of black voices that move through my social timelines and podcast feeds these days is such a rich, resplendent comfort. When you can follow the work of not just a handful of black writers and commentators, but dozens upon dozens, running on their own or within enshrined institutions, you stop focusing on how different their perspectives are from the rest of the world — and begin to take notice of the many differences among them. You witness their minor debates, and pick sides. You see and hear them making guest appearances in one another's territory. "Rep sweats" fade from the picture; instead, you take as a given that people of color do and make and like all kinds of things.
And so, to toast the 10th birthday of The Black Parade, I called up two black writers whose work I adore and whose taste I admire, to have the exchange of ideas I wish I'd known how to have way back when. Here's hoping it reaches a few brown kids still learning how to trust themselves.
Andrew Limbong and Brent Baughman provided production support for this story.

We Live Artist of the Week: Procrastinatrix
youtube
We Live is more than just your average morning radio show taking place in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. Sure, guests call from all over the world and end their interview by getting eaten by zombies live on the air. Sure, these guests are athletes, musicians, artists, actors, journalists, and overall legends. But We Live is more than listening to hilarious interviews that always end the same way - people dying. It also is a show that plays the best indie and underground music on planet Earth.
The governments of the world have collapsed. Zombies lurch on every corner of the world. The living are encouraged to stay home and stay safe. But that doesn’t seem to happen. The world goes on, just with zombies. And since all bets are off, that means the industry conglomerates no longer own the radio waves. Thanks to the end of civilization as we know it, and the rise of undead ghouls, we all get to listen to amazing music from phenomenal artists.
We Live boasts the best underground music library from indie artists anywhere that the living still survives. Every week, we bring you music from around the globe that you would most likely never hear anywhere else. We’ll prove it. Go ahead and check out our Bandcamp page. And those are just some of our celebrated artists. We also search abandoned record stores and music studios for CDs, tapes, records, and even 8-tracks of forgotten or never “broke-through” musicians. We also search Soundcloud and Spotify for artists waiting to get noticed.
Every week, we highlight one particular artist or band that we think you’ll really enjoy regardless of your taste in music. This week, that band is PROCRASTINATRIX.
Music Gateway had this to say about the Welsh techno innovator: Based near Ystradgynlais, Procrastinatrix is a prolific Electronic Music artist with 10 albums & EP’s under his belt. He spends most of his time avoiding practical tasks and instead channeling his creativity into Ableton making spooky, off-kilter beats. Somewhere between Synth-pop and Experimentica, his music is at once catchy, discombobulating, hypnotic, wonky & strangely listenable. If you had to pin him to a genre, he’d say it’s Neo-Nostalgia. You can read the post here. Procrastinatrix’s music is covered throughout all of Episode 4 titled “Ashes to Ashes”. Listen to We Live on Spotify and enjoy every episode HERE. You can take a listen to their song on this week’s episode in the link below. Also remember that our 24/7 Deadline messaging phone number is open for voicemail or text. If you have anyone you’d like us to discover, please let us know at +1(360)836-0628.

If you had to pick the top five episodes of supernatural what would you pick? I'm asking because I'm planning a binge party with my friends but I legit cannot decide
ohmygod ohmygod YES that sounds so fun!!! i have some amazing eps in mind, but idk if i can put them in a particular order of favorites, also just picking 5 from the whole series is HARD, especially because there's such a wide range of vibes in the eps. okay lemme think:
5x22 "Swan Song" - is this thee best spn ep of all time? with the narration, the montages - you decide.
5x08 "Changing Channels" - a full on crack episode that somehow manages to be crucial to the apocalypse plotline?? sign me tf up.
6x15 "The French Mistake" - this would make everyone's top 5 list i think, but that's because it's valid. imo you can't do a spn binge collection without this ep
11x04 "Baby" - a robbie thompson classic. another ep that's debated to be one of the best. yeah, the one from the car's perspective <3
10x05 "Fan Fiction" - i'm a fan of the meta episodes, but i know some aren't, so if you're not, def pick another one, buttttt it's a musical. about their lives. and they're watching it. it's awesome.
Honorable Mentions:
1x18 "Something Wicked" - listen this one is just special TO ME, it's the first time we see young sam and dean interact with john, and it's really just beautifully tragic that that's the case, but it's def a crucial ep in young dean studies.
4x01 "Lazarus Rising" - first time we see Cas is a MUST imo. plus, it's just an EPIC entrance for angels and a great season premiere.
4x21 "When the Levee Breaks" - if you want angsty, full-of-pain ep, this has to make your list. if you're aiming for lighthearted, funny eps, maybe not so much, but i'll list it because it's just that good
6x20 "The Man Who Would Be King" - an option for the cas girlies (gn). this is a great ep, and if you're a heller friend, you may choose to include this one from our fav angel's perspective.
12x11 "Regarding Dean" - a comfort ep of mine. if you're a deangirl like me, this one my be extra special to you too. it's got dean cuddling a bunny, adorable dean and rowena scenes, and ofc the mechanical bull, so it's a win.
13x06 "Tombstone" - a heller classic. deancas reunion, deancas in cowboy hats, dean being happy, cas meeting jack - it has everything, my beloved <3
13x16 "Scoobynatural" - it's a scooby-doo crossover. enough said.
15x18 "Despair" - destiel confession scene, but yeah. this one is pretty tense, obviously, so tread lightly.
hope this helps you, anon! <3

MULTIVERSAL RULES
There are so many rules of multiversal travel in the MCU that I am kind of confused trying to keep track of all of them. So, I thought of compiling a list of multiversal rules introduced so far to make it easy to keep track of everything we have been told so far. *I will keep updating this list as new rules are introduced.
The multiverse is a concept we know very little about 😂😂 (Doctor Strange)
Changing the past doesn't change the future, it only creates a new timeline (Endgame)
The Avengers closed off the branches in timelines by returning the stones from where they picked them up, essentially creating a closed loop. (Endgame)
HWR rearranged the multiverse into a singular timeline called the Sacred timeline (Loki)
The TVA is tasked with maintaining the proper flow of time, as predetermined by HWR (Loki)
HWR isn't concerned with protecting timeline or avoiding time displacements. He only prunes events that lead to the rise of his variants and the multiversal war between them. That is why they let Steve go back in time in Endgame, maybe because his diversion didn't lead to Kang's variants rising (Loki)
Stepping off the predetermined path creates a nexus event (Loki)
The TVA tracks variants with their temporal aura (Loki)
To fix a nexus event, the TVA resets the timeline, which loops the timeline back to the time before the nexus event, leaving the variants without a place on the timeline (Loki)
The TVA can't reset a nexus event past the red line, also called nearing the apex (Loki)
The TVA need to show up in real time to fix a nexus event (Loki)
Nexus events are caused by chaotic alterations of predetermined outcomes (Loki)
It is impossible to start a nexus event in an apocalypse because everyone and everything is destined for eminent destruction (Loki)
While pruning the TVA just transfers the matter of the timeline to the Void at the end of time (Loki)
The Void is the beginning of a new timeline (Loki)
Killing HWR maybe resetted the timeline paving way for the Kang variants to fight each other again (Loki)
Sylvie killing HWR reactivated the multiverse, which led to all the phase 4 multiversal projects like NWH and MoM 🙂 (interview here)
There are certain fixed events in a character which cannot be changed or it would change their entire course of history. These are called absolute points. (What if episode 4)
Doctor Strange couldn't save Christine because her death was an absolute point, which led to Strange becoming a sorcerer, and changing that would create a paradox (What if ep 4)
Two variants can have totally different appearance and physical features (Loki, NWH), even their relatives can be totally different people in each timeline (the 3 aunt Mays)
It's possible for certain events to not have happened in certain timelines, like no Avengers in Tobey and Andrew's timeline (NWH)
Dreams are the windows into the lives of our multiversal selfs (MOM)
America Chavez can open multiversal portals (MOM)
The gap between universes is called gap junction. (MOM)
The first rule of multiversal travel is that you don't know anything 😂 (MOM)
Food is free in most universes (MOM)
There is a universe where everyone is made of paint (MOM)
Meddling too much with the multiverse can cause two universes to collapse. This is called an Incursion (MOM)
It's possible for variants from other universes to carry new germs which can be harmful to the said universe (MOM)
The MCU universe is 616. The Illuminati one is 838 (MOM)
The darkhold has a spell which allows one to possess their alternate variants body. This is called dreamwalking (MOM)
There is a difference between alternate timeline and alternate universe (this one I deduced myself)

Note
The Doylist reason for Jadzia not joining the group who went undercover as Klingons in Apocalypse Rising is that Terry Farrell has sensitive skin and couldn’t handle the Klingon makeup. Like, she was intended to be there in the original script for the ep, according to Terry Farrell’s memory alpha page.
I'll accept this, but they really should've addressed this in the script cause her not being there was very confusing
