At least, that’s what his father had told him for as long as he could remember. And it was the reason his parents kept him locked inside of his rooms.

His favourite time to be outside, though, was in the evenings at the end of August. With the sun warming during the day, the temperature was always perfect all through the night, and leftover aroma of summer hung in the air, but Draco could still smell the hints of the dawning autumn. It felt like change, and every year, he wished that his confinement would pass with the summer. It never did, and having his hopes crushed hurt increasingly much each time.

The WIP Snip One

This one is really embarrassing, I have tags going back months from @thehoneybeet (March 2023!), @wolfpants (May and June!), @tackytigerfic (August '23 and January this year), and more respectably, @citrusses and @thecouchsofa. I'm so bad at this lol.

This WIP currently has no name, but it's both a Drarry and a RONSY.

AND! I originally started writing it in 2012. Let it be known that I never give up on a WIP and this one is having it's moment now.

A snip for my snip

One of the most common misconceptions following the defeat of You Know Who was that everyone would live Happily Ever After, and that the only sorts of trouble that may mar the otherwise blissful aftermath of the Second Wizarding War would be comparatively minor peccadillos, like your favourite Quidditch team losing a match, or finding you were out of milk having already made a cup of tea.

Harry often thought that perhaps some of his life choices, especially immediately after the aforementioned war, were born of a desire to make that fairytale ending a reality. He attended the parades, and the balls, and the press conferences. He sat for the interviews and answered all the questions (Merlin’s balls, there were a lot of questions), and he completed his NEWTS by correspondence along with Ron, Hermione, and most of his surviving year level. There had been a celebratory ball after that, as well.

He applied for the Auror training programme, and was, of course, accepted. He went out with Ginny Weasley. He set up a charity for orphans, and a charity for dragons, and put in more than his fair share of effort in the Hogwarts Rebuilding Project. He put his foot down when Harry Potter Day was proposed by the Ministry, and when the letter writing campaign had been launched by Witch Weekly, he chose not to press charges for sexual harassment, even though he received hundreds of pairs of underpants in the post because of it. He simply banished them en masse to the bin on the back steps, and tried to see the funny side of it (Ron and Ginny were having no trouble seeing the funny side; if anything, they were having trouble seeing Harry through their hysterical tears of laughter). When he later found Kreacher asleep on a rainbow mountain of knickers at the bottom of an unused cupboard, a pair of lace French-cut pants atop his head like a frilly crown, he closed his eyes, shut the door, and hoped that Kreacher had at least laundered them first.

Harry lived the fairytale determinedly for nine months.

And then one morning, he woke up and changed his mind.

Harry looked at the colourful pills on Draco’s palm. Underneath the colourful lights above them, they looked to be changing colours every few seconds.

“What is this?”

The smirk that grew on Draco’s face sent shivers down Harry’s spine. “They’re happy pills.”

He watched as Draco popped a pill in his mouth, closing his eyes in content. When he opened them again, Harry swore his silver eyes were glowing softly. “Take one,” Draco offered again.

Slowly, Harry took one of the pills between his thumb and index finger. He studied it closely before putting it on his tongue. It immediately dissolved, leaving a weirdly sweet taste behind on his tongue.

“I got them from a wizard on a corner of Diagon Alley,” Draco said. His voice was barely audible above the music of the club. “They work wonders to get everything loose.”

Harry raised an eyebrow, but didn’t question it further. Instead, he looked around the club. At all the people dancing and drinking. At the smoke and the glitter falling down on the dance floor. It looked like a fairytale.

“Do you feel it?” Draco said in his ear. His breath was warm, inviting. They were standing close, so close Harry could feel the outline of Draco’s body pressing up against him. “Can you hear it calling your name?”

Harry closed his eyes. And for once, he let loose of the last bits of control he had. He let the feeling of freedom finally take over.

“I’m doing it to protect you. To protect us,” Ron says, voice growing louder. “Don’t you know what you’ve done, Malfoy? That—curse, down there? I was supposed to break it before it could activate. But you’ve gone and unleashed it, haven’t you? And now we’re stuck here, like this, together, without any clues as to how to reverse it—this… this bond, this bond that could fucking kill us both if we get too far from each other, because it’s a bond curse and you just swooped in and opened Pandora’s fucking box, you reckless fucking prat.”

Silence hangs between them, heavy and thick.

1. What ship were you completely obsessed with when you were a teenager, but now you don't care anymore?

-not really obsessed, but I'd have to say Nick/Maddie from PR: Mystic Force. I really liked their dynamic and tbh, it was that couple that introduced me to fanfics because I went googling for info on Melanie and Firass

2. Which ship would you consider your first one?

-oh that's an easy one: Tommy/Kim. The moment I saw them on screen, I started shipping them before I even knew what shipping was. They were my OTP before I even knew what that was. Even at that young age, I was taken in by their chemistry, their understanding and acceptance of each other, the slow build up of their relationship...just...their everything. Honestly, it was because of this ship that i could not get into Disney fairytales because they did more to convince me of true love than any Disney movie ever did.

3. Your first fanfic belonged to which couple?

-Tommy/Kimberly. After I learned what fanfic was from searching Maddie/Nick...I stumbled upon a Tommy/Trini story and it didn't sit right with me lol. I kept thinking "Tommy and Kim are meant to be" and then I started writing a story about them. Took my weeks, after I'd written the first seven chapters, to work up my courage to actually post that first chapter.

4. Do you remember the first couple you saw a fanart over?

-more than likely Nick and Maddie.

5. Did you ever get into ship discourse?

-uhm....I mean, not really? I've responded to one or two anon posts or even made a post or two about a ship but actual discourse? I usually have those discussions with my friend

6. Did you used to have a NOTP or have it currently?

-ha! Did I ever! And still do: Kataang, Klance, Hinny, McRolls, Tommy/Kat, Jason/Kim, Dramione, Romione.

7. Who were the couple in the last fanfic you read?

-well, I'm currently reading three fanfics right now, so the couple in those are: Zutara, Tododeku, KinnPorsche

8. Currently, do you have any OTPs?

-ohh yeah: Tomberly, Drarry, Sheith, Zutara, KinnPorsche, Tododeku, DickKory, Geraskier

9. Is there any couple, to this day, you are extremely mad about not getting together?

-yes. I'm pissed they broke Kim and Tommy (rumor was, the letter wasn't even the original storyline but they did it because they wanted the fans to let go of Kimberly and accept Kat); Sheith (they had the best chemistry and the show kept drawing parallels between them and other couples on the show, including Keith's own parents); Zutara (they just made sense and I think Katara would've really blossomed even more because Zuko never would've stifled her or encourage to forego her own culture); Drarry (sure as shit, if one of them was female, it would've happen, so I don't see why it couldn't happen anyways. -a bully/victim dynamic that is labeled as enemies-to-lovers; when a miscommunication happens and the person immediately runs away/avoids the other without giving them a chance to explain, which leads into the miscommunication going on for more than 2-3 chapters (even worse when it's a 15 chapter story and the miscommunication happened in like ch 2 and you're on ch 12 and it...is...still...going on)

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I do, except that on multichapter fics I only respond to the final chapter comments. I love and cherish each comment, though, and they make me more happy than I can express.

6. What is a fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

The Death You Carry. It's an MCD terminal illness fic.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

Most of my fics end happily. The most happy... Well, DNAB I've mentioned above, I think that ends pretty happily, but I'd add The Unquiet Grave too, because the drarry relationship in it is very joyful (imo).

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I've never got hate. The worst has been some entitled comments, or a bit rude and thoughtless. A recent one was like that. Occasionally, one or two people mentioned something they didn't like or understand in my story and that led to interesting discussions.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I do! Idk what kind, the er...normal one?

10. Do you write crossovers? What's the craziest one you've written?

No crossovers, no, though I've written a fic with a strong Captive Prince vibe (and some Easter eggs for CaPri readers) and a fic inspired by wangxian. So, MDZS Easter eggs there too.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Once someone screenshot dirtynumbangelboy and posted it on instagram, in groups of 10 pics. Does that count?

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

A few.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

No. Me and @bixgirl1 sort of talked about it back in the day, but I'm so idiosyncratic I'd be a terrible co-writer. I can't imagine doing it with anyone other than Bix, tbh.

14. What's your all-time favorite ship?

All time favourite is wangxian. I know it's a fairly recent ship for me, but they've hooked me deep.

15. What's a wip you want to finish, but doubt you ever will?

I started a post-Hogwarts/kinda Eighth Year drarry fic a few years ago. I still have a vivid impression of the fic's world and the intensity I was going for, but no idea of the plot (typical) and, for a few other reasons, I'll never finish it. It's a shame because I meant it as a gift to a very dear fandom pal.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Mood, atmosphere, my prose and my turns of phrase tend to be what readers comment on. I've written a few fics people thought were funny. I like my dialogue a lot.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot usually. I think, the end result perhaps doesn't read as bad as I make it, but plot can stall me for AGES. It doesn't come naturally to me, at all.

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language for a fic?

Love it.

19. First fandom you wrote for?

Pynch from The Raven Cycle.

20. Favourite fic you've written?

Probably 9 ½ Days (drarry)) ; it starts like this (pynch) ; and the unfinished secret desires (wangxian). Oh and the HP but non-drarry Black sisters fairytale The Glass Hearts. really love this last one.

I really enjoy mythology and fairytales, but I don't have any specific stories there. I like to collect books whenever I travel from local bookshops, though, and have friends that bring me back stuff when they travel as well :)

Other than that, I read a lot of romance on my Kindle and I love Ruby Dixon's everything she's ever written. The stories always have fun worldbuilding and a good level of smut you can't really get elsewhere, so I enjoy them!

I've learned that "it reads like fanfic" is a good thing because it usually means that the pacing is something that I will enjoy and the stories themselves are more in-line with what I like to read.

I also read a lot of fanfic SKDJLKS but mostly mlm fic at this point in time. A big fan of Sterek, Reylo, Drarry, and more recently, Wolfstar!

2. What’s your total AO3 word count?

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Harry Potter, Tennis RPF, and ATLA! Though I haven't written anything for ATLA in ages, and I am considering getting into F1.

4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?

A Love That Knows of Itself (7k, M, Drarry): A short, fluffy bonding fic I wrote for H/D Erised.

He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not (5.7k, T, Drarry): In direct contradiction to the above, an angsty outsider POV fic I wrote from Astoria's perspective.

Rush (For A Gap That Exists) (42k, M, Drarry): My first ever fic for the fandom, a Muggle AU featuring Draco and Harry as rival F1 drivers!

The Pirc Defence (10k, E, Drarry): Another Muggle AU with Harry and Draco as rival chess players! This, along with The Greatest Game forms my trio of sports fiction. (I was going through a Phase™)

Think Of Me Fondly (3.5k, E, Drarry): Can't say much about this one without giving away the ending, but this is my entry for HP Drizzle from last year!

5. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?

I try my best to, though I have a huge backlog. It's mostly because almost all the comments I receive are so wonderfully thoughtful and detailed and I want to reply to them in the same way - which takes time. I also spend a lot of my time leaving comments on other people's work. I'm working my way through my inbox though! And I like to think I've gotten better at responding to them. I'm taking a break from writing for a bit so hopefully that will clear up more time for comments - both leaving them and replying to them!

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

Ohh, I love this question. I love angst, and I generally try to write angsty things, but my H/D Reverse Bang Fic, Blame Is Shaped Like A Circle, has to be the angstiest fic I've ever written. The entire thing is just angst, angst, angst, hints of fluff, more angst, and the angstiest ending to top it all off. Plus it has the most gorgeous art by the lovely @gnarf

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

This is a tough one. What is the happiest ending? Is it a smooth and fluffy story with a fairytale ending? Or is it a conflict-ridden story that makes the resolution that much more sweeter? I think the sweetest story I've ever written is A Love That Knows Of Itself, but the ending that feels the most earned is Rush - simply because of what the characters go through, both in terms of their relationship and their own external hardships.

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have been fortunate enough to have not! Everyone online has been nothing but kind and encouraging and helpful, which is what I love about fandom in particular - this culture of always trying to lift each other up.

9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?

I don't write explicit smut often, only when the mood strikes. When I do write smut, I generally veer towards smut with a focus on the emotional aspect of it, the sensations and thoughts of the characters. It's more hazy than descriptive. Writing explicit smut is also so hard - I don't know how so many writers I know do it so exceptionally.

10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?

I haven't written any cross-fandom fics, and I don't usually read them either. However, if Sports AUs count then I've written F1, Tennis, and Chess AUs, all three involving Drarry as arch-rivals. I have plans for other AUs (cricket, quidditch, football etc) but (a) they're all long-form and (b) it's going to take a lot of research that I (unfortunately) don't have time for, so they're on the backburner for now.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Not as far as I know!

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

Nope, but I allow translations <3

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?

Unfortunately not, but one day @nanneramma and I will finally write our Founders Era saga that I think about often and will never stop being excited about!

14. What’s your all time favourite ship?

It's a tie between Drarry and Fedal, though I am enjoying myself quite a bit writing rare-pairs. I've somehow fallen into the pattern of writing one rare-pair for every Drarry fic, and it's been a blast discovering new characters within the HP verse.

15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I will persevere under the belief (delusion?) that all my WIPs will be complete within my lifetime.

16. What are your writing strengths?

Dialogue, I think? It's always come naturally to me, and most of my writing is just dialogue with exposition filled in to get me from one conversation to another, ha.

17. What are your writing weaknesses?

Definitely pacing. Sometimes I get impatient and tend to gloss over certain parts of a story that I find tedious, but linger over others that I'm more interested in writing. This results in a mish-mash of half-rushed, half-staggered first drafts. But I am combatting this by simply removing all parts of a fic I don't want to write and adding a few filler sentences instead. It's done wonders for my productivity and quality of writing. I also enjoy the process more. It's like a hack!

18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?

I think it's alright, but I'd say only if (a) you absolutely need to write that dialogue in another language and (b) you don't know/can't contact a speaker of that language to consult. It's very easy with many languages to accidentally change even a syllable or a consonant and have the word/sentence mean something completely different! It's better to be safe than sorry! It's also easier to connect with different language speakers online (for example on discord) and they're always happy to help <3

19. First fandom you wrote for?

ATLA! I ended up taking down my first ever fic, but the second one I ever wrote is a short Zukka AU based on the India-Pakistan partition. It was one of my first forays into writing and there's lots I'd change about it now, but I keep it up there because I like seeing the way my writing has changed over the years.

20. Favourite fic you’ve written?

Nope, I cannot choose. Please don't make me.

I hate to do this to her, but like...Okay, my friend Lila is so very gifted and I adore all of her work, but Compulsory Figures blew my socks off. Smug, famous Severus and starstruck Harry???? The smut is stupid hot. I can't tell you the number of times I've reread this fic. It's ridiculous. It's a Muggle figure skating AU!!!!! All that elegance and grace and beauty I associate with figure skating and all the questionable hotness of Severus abusing his fame and power to seduce pretty boys?? Yes please and thank you.

My sweet Nina. She has produced so many excellent fics, but this one from Adopt-a-Prompt still stands out to me. Found family fluff plus family history angst. It's set at Spinner's End (which I'm always a sucker for) and features Eileen (who I'm also a sucker for.) Postwar recovery, set during Christmastime! Combines my love of Snarry in particular with my love of Severus himself, and how that love extends to learning more about his history and exploring more of where (and who) he came from and how it shaped him.

This is especially special since it's established Drarry that becomes Drapery. It's very rare that I can read Harry or Snape with others, even if it's both of them with others. I have very strange, specific feelings about my OTP, okay? But I've always loved Writ's work, and I knew they were very excited to get this work finished and posted, so I couldn't resist giving it a chance. And I'm so glad I did! (Should have known I could trust them!) It's such a unique premise, and it's de-aging the only way I like it (as in: retaining an age gap!) The exploration of each individual connection (between Harry and Draco, and Harry and Severus, and Draco and Severus), and how they all work together. The struggles they face. And how real and human they all feel. And while I've been able to read the occasional Drapery in the past, this is the first one that really made me see it. This convinced me it could be real, as more than just a bit of smut to scratch an itch. (For me personally, this is just about my weirdly specific ship feels LOL.)

One of few WIPs I follow! Such a strange, dark fairytale-esque story! I still owe them a comment on chapter 2, I believe...Which means I need to reread, oh no. EYES. Eldritcher always has such unique ideas and such a unique writing style and every one of their works is stellar, but this one especially captured my mind and heart, and I'm so excited for the third and final chapter to be posted!

Another of the very few WIPs I follow! Listen, PI has been my biggest writing crush for the longest time. I've been reading since The White Road, okay (still one of my top fave Snarries of all time, btw.) To get several new stories from PI this year was such a treat! Social Lubricant was such a joy, and I'm so excited to see where The Threefold Death goes, but The Afterlight has my heart. We're barely in the story at all but I already have a feeling it'll end up on my faves list one day, when all is said and done. Her characterizations of Harry and Severus are, as ever, fully on point and exactly how I like them, as is their electric dynamic. Her prose is as gorgeous as ever, and the story itself is full of the grit and humanity and passion I'm forever in love with. I could not be more jazzed about this story and I about die whenever I see an update. (Speaking of which, this is another one I owe a comment on...Oops! I'll get there soon, PI, I swear!)

16.) Were you comments coherent or mostly screaming?

Ahahahahaha. People tell me I'm more coherent than I think I am, so who knows. I make solid attempts at being coherent that I feel turn into babbling, rambling nonsense.

I think my comments for my favorites all turned out to be a good combination of both? Like "this work is so great and it blew my mind and it deserves me waxing poetic, but also my brain is melted so this is hard."

25.) Do you read on your phone or on your computer?

Prior to this year, I'd have said my Kindle! I was doing so good about reading all my fics there, but I got a bit lazy this year and have been reading on my phone instead. I think I've only read on my computer for helping check fest fics, or looking over fics for friends on Google docs. I don't like "checking" fics on my phone, it's easier for me to get in the right mindset for that on my computer.

Charlie always falls asleep before Harry does.

Perhaps he has less on his mind. Perhaps he knows he can protect them if something goes horribly wrong. 

It hasn’t. Yet. 

Two weeks on the trail and they haven’t encountered any angry dragons or other dangerous wildlife. Just rabbits, foxes, the occasional squirrel. Plenty of birds.

The birds wake when Harry wakes, when the sun is still creeping up through the trees and the gaps in their tent, casting everything in a flaxen, washed-out glow. 

So he could blame it on his lack of sleep. His late nights and his early mornings. If Charlie were to ask, that’s what Harry would say. That’s what he’d blame this—impulse on.
