“Year for Stealing Radio Artist’s Violin,” Toronto Star. December 20, 1932. Page 2. --- John J. Kelly Also Pleads Guilty to Stealing Musician’s Car --- Once again will the enchanting music of Murray Griss and his violin be heard on radio and stage, because the appearance of John J. Kelly on a charge of stealing the instrument heralded its return to its master.
When the Griss automobile disappeared from the curb with the beloved violin resting on the rear seat, the musician raised a hue and cry throughout the city. The bereavement was publicized in The Star’s ‘Are You Listening?’ clumn and there was not a musician in the city who did not mourn with Violinist Griss.
Kelly pleaded guilty to theft of both car and violin.
Detectives Shields and Hinchelwood are the officers who recovered the artist’s property. Kelly was sentenced by Magistrate Jones to one year on each charge, to run concurrently.
‘The car had not been run far,’ Defence Counsel W. B. Horkins suggested.
‘Two thousand miles,’ retorted the crown. 'Not much these days,’ Mr. Horkins smiled.
‘Every candy company is doing the same thing,’ declared Col. R. H. Greer, defending William Robertson, Norris Heller and James McDonald, on charged of conducting lotteries.
Lottery on CandlesThe ‘lottery’ was a matter of 200 candles in a box, a certain number of them with dark centres and the rest white. If a purchaser of the one-cent confection was fortunate enough to draw a ‘dark,’ he was rewards with a five-cent candy. Accused were manufacturer, agent and shop-keepers.
‘I’ll make it withdrawn,’ his worship declared.
The epic refusal of Detectives Coulson and Wilson, of a $50 bribe popped up again with the appearance of Alex Boychuk on a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice. He pleaded guilty.
Put $50 in Pocket‘The officers were investigating some alcohol in the house,’ Crown Attorney W. O. Gibson recalled. ‘When they are were leaving accused put his hand in Coulson’s pocket and when the officer looked inside he found $50 had been placed there. They arrested Boychuck.’ The pleading of Thomas O’Connor, for the defence, brought a three-month sentence on a charge which has a maximum of two years.
Stole Women’s ClothesRugged, masculine men were James Kitchen and Ross Crawford – and not a little abshed were they to plead guilty to theft of ladies’ dresses, underwear and sweaters. Det.-Sergt. Mumberson, however, cleared things up by testifying that accused were present and past employees of the factory where the things were made. Both are married, too.
‘I will have to be more severe, because you are on probation,’ explained Magistrate Jones. ‘Six months.’
Having made restitution of the sum of money involved in several fraud charges, Rupert Rive was put on a year of probation when he appeared for sentence.
A Friendly Argument ‘It was a case of a friendly argument,’ explained Defence Counsel T. B. Horkins, defending Oscar Grossman on a wounding charge. ‘They were drinking together. Everything is all right.’
Failure of complainant to appear lent strength to the protestations of friendship. Case was withdrawn.
Charged with shopbreaking in connection with his entry into waterworks property, Norman West pleaded guilty to trespassing and was assessed $10 with a 10-day alternative.
Three thefts of overcoats from unemployed men were charged against Joseph Johnston, Maxwell Armstrong and Albert Wybrow. The trio had attended an entertainment for workless men and picked up the coats, it was charged.
Wybrow is a Barnardo boy and intercession by the home led Magistrate Jones to be lenient. ‘I hope you will be properly grateful, my boy,’ said his worship as he suspended sentence. The other two were sentenced to three months each, dating back to Dec. 11, when they were arrested.
Court was adjourned to the afternoon.
Frowns on Church-loiteringVigorous and sincere was the assurance of Camille Plourde, facing a charge of attempting to take his own life, that he was through with that sort of thing.
‘You won’t try it again?’ asked Magistrate Tinker in early police court. ‘I certainly will not,’ he rejoined. Plourde was remanded for sentence.
Yesterday Mike Sanderlowich was sent back to the nether regions to sober up. To-day Mike popped his head over the railing and grinned assent when his worship inquired after his state of sobriety (Mike’s), the grin broadened as Mike departed, on remand.
Justice chose to grant Daniel Roach Thomas Ryan, on vagrancy charges, the opportunity of a Merry Christmas. They both rated $10 or five days.
‘I was just in there,’ were the simple words of Christopher Farrell, charged with loitering in a church wash-room in a manner to suggest vagrancy. P.C. Vance, 62, testified accused had been drinking and his worship set the assessment for being ‘just in there’ at $10 or 30 days.
In University CorridorLikewise, the bench estimated it was worth $10 or 30 days to Augustine Cullen for failing to give a good account of himself when stopped in the corridor at the University of Toronto where the students hang their coats.
Only two days in the city, George Hartwich was a first offender in Inebriation Alley and drew the customary interview with Captain Bunton. William Bonner and Henry Flood were invited to pay $10 or spend 30 days in meditation because they pleaded guilty to being drunk.

do you ever just. ohhhh what if we were raised in hell and i was set on becoming as bad as this place allowed. but i saw you again and again until it became habit; became carved into my bones like the revenge bestowed on my shoulders. and you were the first to make me laugh. and i ended up relaxing around you even though it went against everything i knew. but we recognised something in each other, consciously or not. you matched me. you matched the whip-crack and the broken glass and the thunderstorms and the blood under my fingernails. and you saw me. you really really saw me and still you stayed despite all of it. and we didn’t know what any of it was. we didn’t know why i could fall asleep next to you. or why i allowed you close enough to see my wounds. i could feel your breath on my skin. and all those things we said in the dark that would’ve caught alight if we’d said them in the day. and you stayed and stayed and stayed even when i thought you wouldn’t. even when you shouldn’t have. and we were relentless. and you were my first understanding of love. before i knew what it was. before i knew what it meant or how it felt, it was always always you.

hi hi soooo i’ve been meaning to send an ask about the most recent chapter of on another ocean because i went insane!!!! like all your characterisations are so so good and i think we glossed over the whole peter in love with sirius thing?? i would like to go back to that and actually maybe read something from peter’s pov i am like. so obsessed with this idea your MIND!! and this icon berlin peter it’s just!!! i need 2 read him and fabian getting together too im sooo here for peter to have his moment being pined over actually. and literally i KNOW r/s finally fuck in this chapter but i am so captivated by all the other moving parts and relationship dynamics!! but rest assured i was yelling when sirius made remus jealous on purpose i love that trope so much!!!! all that tension finally resolved only for it to come crashing down with the friends who fuck speech <3 can’t wait for that to backfire so bad <3 anyway just love your fic so much can’t wait for the next update :-))
omg hiiii!! welcome!!! would you like a seat? here have some tea!! <333
peter oh peterrrrrrr i am so fascinated by this guy! and by his dynamic with the rest of the guys! i really empathise with him, i think. high school friendship groups can be amazing, but they can still be soo incredibly stifling. even if they’re great and even if you all still get along, it can be hard to move on and to not get stuck in your ways. and that’s just something i especially see in peter, particularly as he’s kind of always defined as the “extra” or like the fourth guy always trailing around after the others. like he's always defined in relation to other people, rather than who he is as his own person. and like. i just think that would be so incredibly hard on him identity-wise. like how do you form your own identity that isn’t dependent on other people? especially when you know that's how everyone sees you. i imagine that's how you'd also start to see yourself. and like even if the other guys aren’t actively mean to him (in the way that it's implied they were in canon), i still think that would be really difficult to navigate. so i said!! what about an edgy icon peter! in berlin!!! buzzcut and an eyebrow piercing!
i find peter/sirius such an intriguing dynamic because there's this feeling that sirius just isn't ever even an option for peter. like it's totally off the cards for him (which honestly makes me really want to write a peter/sirius fic. i've genuinely been thinking about it!!!) like we kind of also get that with r/s in the sense that remus is this chewed up pencil of a man who somehow bags this guy who is.... basically a prince (although OFC they have a whole lot of other stuff going on too!). but with peter it's kinda taken to the next level. and i think nobody thinks that more than peter yknow? like i think he knows it's absolutely hopeless, but even so in oao i think a teeny tiny part of him still hoped. especially since he's moved to berlin and has found his own identity. i think he would have been soooooo excited to see sirius, and, most importantly, for sirius to see him! and for sirius to see that he's maybe worth knowing. maybe even romantically! but unfortunately ...... 99% of sirius's brain capacity has been taken up by a certain knobbly kneed chewed up pencil man! bad timing :-\\
also YES peter deserves to be pined after !!!!! fabian was always kind of meant to be a double of sirius (tho he is 100% still his own person too) and then the further i got into it the more i was like… what if the situation between peter and fabian was also kind of a double of r/s!! what if!!! but with differences!!! and then peter’s unrequited love for sirius entered the chat and it became this bonkers love square situation! but yes i have soooo many thoughts and feelings about fabian/peter and am definitely planning on doing a lil extra peter pov oneshot of them after r/s leave!!! i just keep imagining the fallout now that it's just the two of them again in their little flat together (well. ft mary! but she basically lives at her gf's). so much has happened! and now there's all this sudden space again that's not taken up by those other silly boys and their drama!
anywho i am very sad to be leaving them behind in the next chap :-( although they will return :-) BUT !! i am also excited because DORLENE!!!! who will also have their own plot line n everything !! woohoo!
also..... ahhhhh! thank you again!!!! i am just so/ happy and flattered to have you here!! have said it before but... i love your work! both yours and wolfpants' fics were largely responsible in inspiring me to start writing again! hehe <3

Sleepless nights

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“We gotta sort out sleeping arrangements.” You all stare at the set up in front of you. Your queen sized bed in the corner, and a mattress on the open floor. “I’m obviously sleeping in my bed.”
“I’ll sleep on the mattress. You kick too much.” Maki comfortably took the side closest furthest from the bed.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You playfully scoff, adding a dramatic eye roll. “I’m gonna get some water so sort out where the other two are sleeping.”
With everything said and done, you step out of the room, taking your sweet time descending down the stairs.
“Alright, who’s sleeping where.” Maki stared at the two boys from her spot on the mattress.
“I don’t mind anywhere…” The blond glanced over to Yuta.
“Neither do I.” The boy shrugged in return.
“Oh fuck me, guys.” Maki threw her head back in an exasperated sigh. Why the hell did you leave her with these knuckleheads. “Fine. Yuta, on the bed. Inumaki, with me. Done and done.”
“Alright.” Yuta nods, taking his spot on the bed next to your spot.
Inumaki just silently nods, plopping down next to Maki, spreading his limbs out like a star. It wasn’t long before you burst through the door, waving a bunch of snacks in the air with a bright smile.
“I got the water!” You grin, tossing some to Maki, who was already waiting to catch said food. “Who’s sleeping where?”
“Yuta is sleeping up on your bed.” The dark haired girl pointed to the boy sprawled out on your bed.
“Bet.” You grin, placing your bottle of water next to Maki on the ground before running up and jumping onto Yuta, who was still taking up more than half of your bed with him limbs.
The poor boy let out a loud grunt as he felt the full force of your body weight slam into him. He turned his head, to you, a small glare on his face.
“You’re actually gonna break my back one day.” He groaned.
“Yeah yeah, you still love me.” You rolled off of him onto your side of the bed.
“I’m going to bed.” Maki suddenly cut in. “Night.”
“Night!” You turn to Yuta, grinning before throwing the blanket over your heads.

— yuta is one of those people who doesn’t have to study to get good grades, yet he still studies every day
— not related to the series but next smau series ain’t gonna have no capitalization (aside from all caps messages yk cuz i’m lazy)

No. 10 - Dodo Airlines
Tumblr media
Well, @vultureworth, I suppose you can.
For reference: I’ve never played  Animal Crossing, so I actually had to do research for this. I saw an interesting thing or two in the process, though, so here’s what I learned! This took me down an entirely different rabbit hole, so two posts are going up today. Enjoy.
Tumblr media
(image: Animal Crossing Twitter)
So, to begin with, just looking up the liveries I’ve seen a few mentions of the DAL logo being a nod to JAL.
Tumblr media
I don’t not see it. I mean, they’re both circles and both follow an XAL format, but that’s true for like a fifth of all the airlines in the world. Both have a bird facing to the left. The fonts used are similar in width and color and both appear to be italic, but the spacing and typeface are visibly very different. I probably wouldn’t have picked up on it had it not been pointed out to me but the Tsurumaru logo is definitely iconic and it’s a neat little detail.
Tumblr media
The only type DAL operates looks like this. It’s too stylized to discern an exact model but my guess would be that it’s meant to be a Cessna 172 or one of the many similar-looking Cessna models. They’re extremely common and frequently fitted with floats. I’ve flown on a Cessna 180 floatplane myself.
Tumblr media
Yep, that’s sure a Cessna 172 on amphibious floats. DAL’s plane isn’t amphibious, only capable of taking off and landing on water, but you can do that too (I imagine it’s even easier); I just had a weirdly hard time finding a picture of a fully aquatic Skyhawk.
Tumblr media
I’m actually pretty sure it’s specifically one of the very old models which had a much more angular tailfin and no rear windows, but maybe by this point I’ve thought more about this than the art team did when designing the plane. That said, I have to question the decision to add a third prop blade to a plane that can barely pull 200 horsepower with aftermarket engine changes. That’s just inefficient.
When it comes to the DAL livery, I enjoy the way that the curve of the main fuselage’s paint is repeated on the pontoons. The logo placement feels weird to me initially but I suppose upon reflection it would be strange to put it anywhere else and it looks fine. It would probably look a bit less fine on a real airplane but this is not a real airplane, this is a cartoon airplane flown by a silly cartoon bird in a video game.
This is making me appreciate just how hard it is to find somewhere to put a logo on a single-engine high-wing plane.
But the DAL fleet are actually jellybeans! That’s right, they come in four different colorways!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
all images taken from either the Animal Crossing wiki or bidoofcrossing.com
I’ll be honest - I like the blue trim on the yellow and the green models, but it looks sort of bad on the red/orange. My favorite overall, surprisingly, might be the yellow. I don’t know - I like the contrast, but the yellow somehow feels less bright than the green.
Overall...A solid C for Dodo Airlines.
Just one thing, though. We’ve gotten basically every angle except directly from behind, but I don’t see a registration anywhere on these planes. Whatever aviation authority the Animal Crossing world is bound to is going to have some words for DAL...

A lesson of Steadfastness from the battle of Uhud
The Muslims who had strong Īman in their hearts, what was their reaction?
One of Al-Muhājirun said that he passed by one of Al-Ansār, a man who was covered and soaked in his own blood, and asked him "Are you aware that Muhammad has been killed?" The Ansāri responded, "If Muhammad has been killed then he must have fulfilled his mission, so fight on for your religion. Let us die as he died fighting for Islām."
So these are Muslims who cannot be defeated in their hearts even if they are defeated on the battleground. Defeat will never get into their spirit. They will always have commitment and this is what is called in islam Thabāt — [being] steadfast. Never would such a muslim try to negotiate with the enemy of Allāh azza wa Jal or ask the Munāfiqun to appeal and intercede for them. Fine, if Rasūlullāh ﷺ was killed, we are going to die like he did, and this is the steadfastness that we should learn from the Sahabah رضي الله عنهم
— Imām Anwar al-‘Awlaqī (تقبله الله).

So… I’ve been looking at your MCs… and I’ve made a name for them
JAL
Jin, Alon and Luneth
Lowkey sounds like jail which is where all of them will go but it fits WHEEZE
Or if we go with them being Jail… having a break down is a
✨Jailbreak✨
Wait NO, YOU’RE RIGHT XD
In some alternate universe where they’ve formed a team, their hijinks would absolutely land them in jail. Several times. But it’s fine, Alon can probably break them out.
I love it, thank you!

Well in the end I made it back
I tried to talk to JAL staff at the airport in the US, and they said someone would be waiting for those of us whose connecting flights were canceled when we arrived in Tokyo. I was nervous, but it couldn't be helped, because they said there was no way to know what the status of other flights would be until we arrived. I wish they could have just put me on a flight that had an opening at that time, but I guess it was possible more domestic flights would be canceled... Or that there were no empty seats at that time at all. Not sure why that would be unless they were consolidating flights to cancel as many as they could, but then I should have been included...
But it worked out, I got to Tokyo and there was someone holding a sign when I got off. There were only two names on the sign so I wonder if my flight was canceled just because it was less inconvenient than canceling other flights. I'm sure there were other people with connections on the flight coming in from other airports, but probably just not that many. They told me I couldn't get a new flight until the next day, and I really just wanted to go home at that point. If I had to stay at a hotel it would have been ok (having to stay at the airport overnight would suck, but Haneda is right in Tokyo and easily accessible by train and bus so I don't think I'd have had any trouble getting to a hotel). But it would have meant another day of traveling. I rather just get it over with.
Fortunately, when I said I really wanted to go home tonight, they had a slip to request a refund for a bullet train ticket. So, I had to go to Shinagawa, and get the bullet train from there. And then I took my local train to my town and a taxi to my apartment. Actually, the last part was easier via bullet train because I'd done the hard part in Shinagawa. If I came home via airplane I had to go through two train stations I'm less familiar with and then search for a cab. But I dealt with the local trains getting to the bullet train and my local one is only a 10 minute ride. Then the taxis are right outside. So riding the bullet train took longer than the airplane would have and was more inconvenient, but was a little more convenient once I actually got off the last train. As long as I can get everything refunded it's fine. I forgot to get receipts for the local trains though -.-' because I'm dumb. But I did get the bullet train receipt which is a lot more important.
So I got home at almost 11 pm Japan time after getting up at 7 am EST, so it was about 26 hours... But everything went relatively smoothly. I was worried the airport would have no idea what to do with me, or that if I took the bullet train it'd be a bitch to get to (I'd never done it from Haneda before but it takes a while from Narita), or that the planes and trains would just all be full with other stranded passengers, or that I'd get a way back part way but arrive too late to make it all the way home without paying hundreds of dollars for taxis. In the end, it took some extra time but I should be getting a refund, and I didn't run into any trouble. I even got dinner on the way. And my apartment is intact, nothing fell in the earthquake. A little issues with my AC which I'm not sure what's going on there but it's working now. And someone should come get my gas restarted in the next few hours. They were supposed to come yesterday but obviously I didn't get home in time to meet them. No problem, easy fix.
It's one of the things I do love about living in Japan. It's small and there's a lot of public transportation, so you can get around different way and you're probably not going to be stranded. There are a lot of ways to access your money or buy what you need or pay your bills. People are hospitable and polite. If this had happened in reverse, I would have been stuck at my connecting airport in the US with no way to get home. I'd have had to wait for the next day flight and would feel less sure of being able to stay at a hotel for the night and even less sure of how I'd get back to the airport the next day. Sometimes it's not a lot of hassle because hotels nearby have airport shuttles and stuff. But those hotels fill up fast and not all airports have them. America is big but not built for convenience. Or sense. My mom's partner is in finance and he told me point blank, the reason American taxes are such a bitch is because companies lobby for them to be difficult. People making mistakes on their taxes is free money. I told him I just use an app in Japan and it takes ten minutes. He said stuff like that is coming to the US (I hear you already can do your taxes online now) and theatening his job, so I'm interested to see if it will possibly turn filing taxes into a less confusing, time-consuming art.
Also while I was home he found out a new client of his had come to him because she was an immigrant with iffy English skills but felt uncomfortable with what her previous advisor had been telling her. And he realized she had been totally taken advantage of by this guy - he was making stuff up and skimming money off her while not actually paying for what she needed. He was going to report this guy, but then someone else he'd screwed over already had! Was nuts. It really sucks to be an immigrant especially if you don't speak the majority language. I feel like that here in Japan even to a lesser degree. Always nervous I'm going to miss an important detail. In this woman's case, she did everything she was supposed to, she just met a real asshole. And she lost a few thousand dollars which she may never recover. And it's not like she can afford that. Which doubly sucks. We feel like "Justice is served" if we can at least catch the criminal. But the victim is still harmed. Sometimes they can recover some of what they lost. But a lot of the time it's lost for good.

From Here To Eternity: Traveling the World to Find the Good Death by Caitlyn Doughty was a respectful exploration of how different cultures around the world treat death and burial. I'm super intrigued by death customs and I've loved Caitlyn's previous books about the funeral industry and such. Had check my own biases quite a few times while listening, which is a sign of a good book. (★★★★)
I'm big fan of the Maintenance Phase podcast and Aubrey Gordon's books have been on my TBR for a while, so I was delighted when You Just Need To Lose Weight and 19 Other Myths About Fat People finally became available for me on Libby. Aubrey narrates this book, which gives it an extra star from the beginning! A lot of what's discussed in that book has been topics on the podcast, so it was a bit of a refresher in some ways, but if you're new to anti-fat work, this is a great place to start! (★★★★)
I wish I actually would've given myself some more space between listening to that and What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat because they hit on a lot of the same discussion points and it was definitely repetitive in some areas. What We Don't Talk About was a bit more emotional because it had a lot more anecdotical stories of anti-fatness that are hard to hear. I've been working to lose some weight this year and trying to keep my mindset and habits healthy toward my body and the process, so this type of reading has been important to me. (★★★)
The Perils of Pleasure by Julie Anne Long didn't really feel like a romance novel, more of a historical adventure piece. I enjoyed it, despite some pacing issues, but it's definitely inferior to the other JAL books I've read this year! (★★★.5)
A Problem Princess by Anna Harrington was fine. The plot in this one resolved some of complaints about the overarching series plot, but the romance developed too fast and I didn't care about heroine's whining about being a princess one bit. On to a new HR series! (★★★)

Hey Mr. Airplane

Stop for a moment, if we keep this up
We won’t ever see each other again after
the airplane leaves I’ll be good, you be good too
If you say that and leave, you think I’ll be fine?
Stop pretending to be calm,
there are tears in your eyes
I see a sadness like you’ve lost the world
Stay one more day, unpack Let’s go watch
a movie later, I’m crying right now, please
La li la di dada la li da
I hate the sky for wrapping around you
La li la di dada la li da
I hate the moon for revealing you
La li la di dada la li da
Because I don’t wanna let you go like this
This is the saddest melody in the world
Hey Mr. Airplane
Stop for a moment, it’s raining
The wind is blowing, it’ll be dangerous if you go now
Hey Mr. Airplane
Stop for a moment, there’s a lot of time
There’s tomorrow too so let her come off
or let me get on
Just one more day, just one more hour,
just one more minute, just wanna say one thing
hey Mr. Airplane
stop for a moment
You left behind a light smile
Left with a smiling face
Pretending to firmly believe in our promise
I should’ve done everything to make you stay
Then I wouldn’t be living in regret, girl
I’m gonna miss your presence for all my life
Just fall into a deep sleep in my arms
I’m looking up at the cruelly beautiful evening sky
Tears are coming cuz it’s the last time
I’m seeing you, please
Do you have to go today? Can’t you go tomorrow?
I don’t wanna let you go, when will you be back?
I’m scared of getting far away from you
What if we naturally break up? Just one more day,
just one more hour, just one more minute
Stop for a moment, it’s raining
The wind is blowing, it’ll be dangerous if you go now
Hey Mr. Airplane
Stop for a moment, there’s a lot of time
There’s tomorrow too so let her come off
or let me get on
Just one more day, just one more hour,
just one more minute, just wanna say one thing
Hey Mr. Airplane
Stop for a moment
KEI THIS IS SOME GOOD SHIT DAMN

Shamaa kahe parwaane se pare chalaa jaa, meri tarah jal jaayega yahan nahi aa. Woh nahi sunta, usko jal jaana hota hai. Har khushi se har gham se begaana hota hai. Pyar deewana hota hai, mastaana hota hai.
(-a broken angel recited this to me one fine dawn after spending the night arguing about how he could hurt me in a million different ways and I'd still find that one reason to hold onto him with utmost love)
