The Gaang as… Forever by Noah Kahan
Zuko: I won’t be alone for the rest of my life
Sokka: I’ll build a boat for when the river gets high
Katara: And I'll meet a girl in the heat of July and I'll tell her so she knows
Aang: That I’m broke but I’m real rich in my head
Toph: That I broke a bone that never healed in my hand
Suki: So, when I hold her close, I might loosen my grip, but I won't ever let her go

zukaang | rajamandala | राजमण्डल | 羅闍曼荼羅 devdas, chigo, lengger lanang and layla-majnun inspired tale
the day zukō was born, agni bestowed him with a single eternal flame, everlastingly alight inside the gentur lamp which he would carry along with him everywhere he went. no one could extinguish and light it back at will except the one who’s destined to guide his fate, as prophesied at naloni mitoni.
after his genpuku as the successor of ōzai tennō, zukō accompanied azhura in attending durga puja and seren taun, hosted by baginda bhumi at the central port of canggu. the siblings then reunited with maiko and tài linh, who became patrons of entertainment in northern manjung.
their seventh generation of tawaifs featured the esteemed amrapali, whose swara and abhinaya effortlessly enamored kaldera royals. as she danced, not only did she take everyone's breath away, but also the life of every kindled flame in the room. then, when she lit them back with gentle sway of her hands, zukō knew that she's the one.
realizing that his son had set his eyes on a mere yìjì, ōzai warned the prince that he might be deceived by outlanders witchery, but zukō insisted that he trusted agni's sacred will. he continued to chase the tawaif in unquenchable desire to know about her more, unaware that the fate he would thread on was to become a madman, lost in utterly blind love which turned into the purest form of devotion.
because amrapali was, in fact, not merely a dancer and disciple of buddha. she was bodhisattva kannon in her avatar form-a man named āng, awakened in rana pota lake as the only living sky dweller. his kin were mercilessly wiped from existence milennium ago by zukō's ancestor, souzan tenshi, who begun the conquest of rajamandala.
āng's crimson henna, drawn by performers of tide drifters; adinda katara and kakanda saka, covered his distinguished irezumi, while his voice was trained to move even the most hardened heart by paduka běifāng and a hia haru, the stone wielders. together with his beloved shrivijayans, the avatar would liberate the victims of war under ōzai's tyrant rule.
however, it was out of āng's prior knowledge that he would possess karmic ties with the very son of his own enemy through vortex of conflicted, mortal feelings. willingly bestow thousands of blessings to zukō's thousands of prayers, he would, but even as the emanation of god, āng still could not simply pull the strings of fate as he selfishly pleased.
by the will of sang hyang widhi, āng was destined to succeed in ending the misdeeds of fire breather’s forefathers, but at the cost of his heart falling forever in unfulfilled love. for he knew, that even though zuko took the role of mirabai to krishna, their wish to be united would be granted only in death like that of layla and majnun.
for @zukaangweek third day prompt: sacred/possesive

its pretty lucky that everyone speaks the same language in the avatar universe.
i know it's just for entertainment purposes, having the characters translate everything 24/7 probably would be a lot, but can you imagine?
aang, katara, and sokka get to kyoshi island and even though they mostly speak in an earth kingdom dialect, since theyre pretty close to the water tribe, the Islanders and kyoshi warriors are somewhat familiar with the southern water tribe language (and vice versa, sokka and katara might know a bit of the earth kingdom language) so it's not too hard for them to communicate.
at first theyre thinking thats how ALL earth kingdom people speak, but then they go further north and the languages change even more. some are similar to each other, but some are so different, it's hard to believe theyre all from the same kingdom.
so what does the gaang do? do they rely on aang's limited understanding of world languages to translate (and mistranslate) everything? do they learn as they go? do they hire translators at every town? or do they find one polyglot and beg them to join their cause?
and that's just for the earth kingdom. would the sister tribe even speak the same language as the southern water tribe? and what about the fire nation? where would they learn the language? could they blend in as colonists from the earth kingdom or would people notice that their accents are different?
i think whatever they do, by the time they meet toph they've learned enough to speak with her whether she knows other languages or not (although i can also picture her parents getting her a language tutor)
hell, how would the pilot even go? would zuko get off the ship with a translator repeating everything he says? or would he learn what he's going to say and do it himself? (and again, thats assuming he hasnt learned foreign languages himself, his parents might have had tutors for him, and iroh would definitely encourage him to learn as well) (LMAO WAIT what if zuko gave up on learning languages so he just has the tutors teach him threatening stuff to yell at people while he's looking for the avatar, so when he finally turns good he doesnt really know how to talk to them without being mean? he'd probably know earth kingdom stuff by that point but water tribe languages?? not so much. the gaang lets it get awkward before they reveal that they've learned a lot of the fire nation language)

Are you a pro-shipper?
I think I'll call myself ship-neutral.
Like, I don't have strong feelings about ships. I join fandoms because I like character beats in the original—ships are just icing on the cake and I can do without them.
I'm a basic bitch that likes all canon ships. Kataang and Maiko and Sukka in ATLA. Even though I believe it wouldn't have mattered if Maiko and Kataang didn't end up together; they were all so young anyways. Plus it didn't have THAT much narrative significance. They could've hinted at Kataang being a thing in the future and Maiko could have used a LOT of better writing as well. I love them together though, goth babies. But I can accept that they didn't have the best writing. I personally have a lot of problem with how their relationship was written although I do ship them.
But still, I like those ships. And Suki and Sokka are absolutely adorable, I don't have any complains regarding Sukka.
And on top of them you throw Zukka, Zutara, Mailee, Sukko (I guess that's what Zuko/Sokka/Suki is called) fanworks at me and I'll eat them up. But I also wouldn't mind if ATLA didn't have any ships at all and they were all platonic. Anything goes and I don't like all the drama that comes with shipwars.
And I'm an absolute sucker for platonic relationships.
For example I'd take an Azula redemption arc and reconciliation with Zuko over any kind of ship content anyday.
I'd take a “the Gaang realises Katara takes on a lot of adult responsibilities (which they do realise) and tries to mitigate that because she's also a kid like them and she doesn't have to” anyday over some romantic plot. Like, am I making sense?
It's the same with Batman. BatCat or Brutalia? Dickkory or DickBabs? Um, can't I like both? On top of them I have a huge list of favourite SuperBat and GhostBat fics.
But what I'd actually like to see is not the ships but Bruce having some character development and learning to be a good father. Which would never happen so I'm over Batman.
TLDR: I'm ship-neutral. I care more about characters and their relationships with each other, romantic or otherwise. But ships are nice for enjoyment and I don't hate them.
Edit: if this ask was in reaction to my writing “antis DNI” in my blog description then what I meant by that was DNI if you're, like anti-Aang, or anti-Mai or if you constantly compare Sokka and Katara and pit them against each other—or if you pit Zuko and Azula against each other (come on you ain't Ozai!). Like, I understand comparing their characters—that's media analysis. But like, it doesn't have to be a contest. So and so is better than so and so. That kinda thing. I love all the babies. Both of team Avatar and team Azula. They're all well-written, three-dimensional characters.
The only kind of anti I am is anti-Bruce Wayne. He's also a very well written, three dimensional character and he's also a cunt. I know I just contradicted the previous paragraph. So what? What of it?

When talking to an Azula hater: She's fourteen, she's abused, she's awesome, she deserves better, she's allowed to murder if she wants
When talking to an Azula stan: She's ruthless, she uses people without care, she abuses her brother and her friends, she's fucking evil, she doesn't get a free pass just because you like her

Fandom: Avatar: The Last Airbender, Pairing: Zukka Modern AU in which Zuko is the captain of the fencing team
I've also posted this to AO3 here. Day 2 here we goooooo!
Tumblr media
Sokka was sitting on a cushioned cube in the student union cafe typing up an essay. Katara, Aang, and Suki sat around the same table, chatting while working on problem sets. Sokka wore a pair of glasses, which he pushed up his nose, glaring at a particular paragraph. He stuck out his tongue, fingers flying over the keyboard. A pair of hands landed on his shoulders without warning. He let out an undignified shriek and jumped three feet into the air. His spirit left his body. Behind him, his assailant chuckled, a low, gravelly sound that sent conflicted shivers down his spine. Zuko. “Sorry,” Zuko said, leaning over Sokka with a half-apologetic, half-shit-eating grin. The handsome bastard wasn't sorry at all. “Don’t scare me like that!” Sokka cried, adjusting his glasses. The others laughed at him, so he flipped them the bird. “Hi, Zuko!” Aang chirped. “We’re having a study party. Wanna join us?” “Sure,” Zuko said. “I have some reading I need to do for econ.” He dropped his backpack next to Sokka’s cube and proceeded to drape himself over Sokka like a smug, weighted blanket. Sokka made an irritated sound, but reached up to scratch the top of Zuko’s head. “What are you working on?” Zuko asked, humming in contentment. “I was working on this essay for Professor Long,” Sokka grumbled, turning his focus back on his laptop. “Before someone decided to send me to an early grave.” “Hey, I said I was sorry,” Zuko said, throwing his legs over the cube so he was sitting wrapped awkwardly around Sokka. Sokka budged up so that they could more comfortably sit together, Zuko’s arms wrapped around his waist and chin on his shoulder. Katara raised an eyebrow at them. “So, what’s going on here?” she asked, gesturing at them with her pencil. “Since when are you two joined at the hip?” “We’re not!” Sokka snapped defensively, flinching away from Zuko. Zuko loosened his hold. “Zuko’s just like this. I’ve given up telling him to stop.” “But didn’t you jump on him for a piggyback ride after fencing yesterday?” Aang asked, entirely without guile. Sokka both loved and hated that about him sometimes. “I remember that happening,” Suki said. “And I distinctly recall that you two held hands all through the Film Club screening of Hereditary last weekend.” “I hate supernatural horror,” Zuko said with a matter-of-fact shrug. “Sokka was just being a good friend.” Sokka winced, guilt gripping his insides. He typed and deleted random words, pretending to focus on his essay instead of the conversation around him. “I would’ve held your hand!” Aang objected. Zuko rolled his eyes at him. “You were already snuggled up with Katara,” he said. “I’m a coward, not a homewrecker.” “I think we would’ve made an exception for you, Zuko,” Katara said, winking at him slyly. Sokka grimaced, a spike of jealous anger supercharging his disgust at the sight of his sister flirting. Who did she think she was? But then, who did Sokka think he was pretending to be? Zuko's warm embrace was quickly becoming more and more uncomfortable. “Guys, can we stop?” he demanded, loudly. “I need to concentrate. Less talking, more study, please.” The others muttered abashed apologies and got back to work. Zuko gave him one last squeeze and left to buy drinks for the table. Sokka’s back felt cold without him there, and he didn’t fail to notice Zuko’s closed-off expression as he went to stand in line. His phone pinged, making him jump. Zuko: So are we not going to tell them? Sokka frowned, but replied quickly so he could put his phone away and get back to work. He had deadlines to meet, and that was more important than the ugly mass of shame churning his stomach and blocking his guts. When Zuko returned, he pulled up another chair and threw his legs over Sokka’s lap so he could get started on his reading. He didn’t try to get any closer. Sokka: not yet. sorry. i’m just not ready.

Imo, atla has a bittersweet ending
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aang is sitting alone and wearing the air nomads clothes, his culture clothes, a necklace similar to GYATSO's necklace. I can't even imagine the emptiness and sadness he was feeling here
There are no airbenders in the crowd
Tumblr media
All nation gathered..... except the air nomads.
No one else in the crowd wearing orange or yellow.
Aang won the war, but his people are still gone.
Yes, he has the Gaang, he has Katara, he has Momo and Appa. But he's still the last airbender.
This is so heartbreaking.

Listening to someone else watch the original ATLA again, just starting season 3, and there's this line where Aang suggests that it didn't just look like he died, but he DID actually die and Katara brought him back. And look, I don't know much about the lore introduced by TLOK, but this sounds like a really fun place to start an AU inspired by "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"'s take on the temporary death and resurrection of a cyclical chosen one: Aang is brought back to life and is STILL the Avatar, but his temporary death still also causes another Avatar to be born into the Southern Water Tribe (or Swamp People or refugees on some southern island, whatever).
Like, I know the Avatar is a reincarnation thing, but weird things can happen with spirits! Maybe this glitch in the cycle causes the spiritual equivalent of mitosis to happen to the Avatar and the spirit attached to them, so there's just two of them now! Maybe having two Avatars has some spiritual downsides, maybe not, it's up to whatever path you choose to explore in this AU.
I just think it would be really funny for post-canon 21yo Aang (and the Gaang and the White Lotus and all the spiritual / religious orders on the planet) to suddenly be confronted with a 10yo water tribe kid who is ALSO the Avatar.
A water tribe couple shuffle awkwardly up to Sokka, like, "Sooooo... we think our 10 year old daughter might be the Avatar...? She can, uh, bend all the elements and all that. Look at this shit." And Sokka is like, "Fuck, Aang is dead?!" Before he's like, "Wait, I saw Aang last week, this kid is way too old?!" And he has to hastily contact Aang like, "Hey, buddy, you're still alive, right?" And Aang can only reply, "Uhhh, last I checked, yes?!?!"
It's probably Sokka and Katara who put the pieces of the timeline together and figure out what caused this, because all of the other Avatars are probably initially like, "Yeah, I have no idea what's happening here. I'm you and you're me, but I'm also her and she's also me, and you and her are kind of the same person, but you're obviously different people now? Wow! Good luck figuring all that out, kid! You're really going places none of us have gone before! A real groundbreaker!"
Aang, through gritted teeth, "I am really not TRYING to do that, thank you!"
