Dear Great Grandma, let me express how much I do appreciate every summer you looked after myself and my sister; let me bring these beautiful memories and how you taught me to be grateful and strong, how you did share your knowledge with us. You are my inspiration, history teacher, mother of 3, looked after your sick disabled aunt and sick husband, run the whole house, little farm and educate us all. i wear two rings
They are on the ring finger of my left hand.
They belonged to my great grandmother, Dora Marie.
They represent two of her three marriages.
One band is yellow gold with hearts all around it. They had to cut it off her finger, so I had it repaired. I can't even see where the cut was. This one fits me.
The other band is part of a set. I gave the engagement ring to my brother for his wife. The wedding band I kept. It is white gold with classic art deco motifs and small five diamonds. Low profile. Classic. This one is a little too large for my finger and the heart band keeps it from sliding around.
I don't know which husband gave which ring.

On June 6, 2022, I walked out of your room at Haven Hall knowing some thing had shifted. That day, you were not wrapped up in your two blankets, a sweat shirt, sweats, and your turban like normal. You were not saying, “Al’right” to the pictures I showed you. You were not allowing anyone to touch you. Actually, when I walked in you were swinging those arms, fighting the CNA that was trying to get you to eat and/or drink. You fought me, which was unlike you. No matter how many times I asked, you refused to drink your protein shake.
On June 6, 2022, something had shifted. The only thing you allowed me to do was take off your shirt, while you kept on your undershirt. I remember thinking, “she is so fraile; breathe Kia and be careful with her”. I asked if I could stretch your legs out for you. Since you stayed in the fetal position, cramping. Aching. Silence. I put your sock back on your foot as it rolled off, but you slid it back off. Lol. It was obvious you wanted to be left alone. And i left you alone, yet i did not leave. I sat beside you, prayed then read my book, read my book and then prayed. With every difficult breath you breathed, I paused to pray; I paused to see if you needed anything. Silence. Yet I stayed until visiting hours were over. Getting ready to leave, I kissed your forehead with 3 kisses, saying I love you in between pecks. You didn’t say it back. I repeated, “I love you little lady; you hear me”. You looked up at me with eyes that read, “I hear you but I can’t”. You were so weak, speech failed you. Once in my car, tears began to fall because I knew some thing was shifting.
And I was right. June 7, 2022, you left this earth and the earth shifted for me. When I arrived you were cold to the touch. I stroked your hair, kissed your forehead again, and prayed. I prayed a prayer of gratitude for your life. Gratitude for your fierce independence and your 94 years of stability. Gratitude for being able to know you, to love you. Gratitude that you were once mine, my great grandmother.
