"Great Alastor, altruist, died for his friends"
a deeper look into Alastor's solo part of the final song
Tumblr media
The entire soundtrack has been stuck in my head since the show ended, but Alastor's part of the final specifically has been playing on a loop in my brain since I first heard it.
The slow downward pan from the Vee's feeling like they are now finally able to take over the city to the upward pan with Alasto's song starting was a fantastic choice, the contrast in their emotions, in the music, and still it all fit perfectly together.
"This place reeks of death," is such an underrated opening for this song in my eyes. We know Alastor is a cannibal, we've seen him eat a dead deer before, [^1] which would point toward him not having a problem with the smell of death and decay, but he goes out of his way to mention it smells of death. I don't think he truly meant the smell of death in this scene though. He might be talking about the death of his career if he had gotten killed in his fight with Adam. The line "Great Alastor, Altruist, died for his friends" is not him referring to himself as an altruist, it is the headlines he already sees if he truly would have died, seemingly for his friends, for the hotel. The way he follows it up with "Sorry to disappoint, this is not where it ends" shows this. It's him stating how absurd it is, but that this would be the story everyone would be thinking should it have happened. But I also feel like he says it because he knows there's the tiniest of truths behind it. Why did he fight Adam alone? Why did he fight in the first place? For the hotel, for his friends. As much as Alastor hates to admit it, he has gotten closer to the people in the hotel for sure, especially when we look at how he interacts with them all. He seems friendlier, even if it's just for show and to keep up his facade, but he truly does act like he at least cares a little but about them. The look he has while even saying it speaks volumes, he looks truly terrified of the implication that hell could see him as an altruist in this fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At first, his smile was an angry snarl, aggression about being humiliated by losing this fight clearly written all over his smile. But then it turns genuinely afraid like he fears the mere concept of being seen as a decent person, not even a good person, just decent enough to fight for the people in the hotel.
He digs his nails into his scalp, dragging his hands down the side of his face, but not at the prospect of dying, but at the idea of what would've come after he had died. [^2] At the idea that all of hell would know he not only died but died for someone else. Before this thought of what other people in hell would think of him, he looked more angry, enraged that Adam even dared be an opponent that Alastor had to run from in order to get out of there alive. His reaction is surprisingly human considering how Alastor normally holds himself. Sure he was alone ignoring the eyes following him around his destroyed radio tower, [^3] There's no one here that he would have to lie to, but he knows better than anyone that you're never truly alone in hell, so it still surprised me how honest he was with the viewers in this moment. It's the most we see of him that doesn't seem to be a character, a facade.
His whole persona is this blatant mask he wears constantly, obvious to everyone who knows him. He even admitted to Charlie that his smile is not real in the slightest. But it works. Every scene where Alastor was talking before his Breakdown Ballad in the finale, I second-guessed every single word that left his mouth. Wondering if it all is a performance. I see a lot of people online with the same thought, looking at everything he says twice, trying to see any hidden meaning, any clue as to what he truly wants to say behind words that, if said by any other character, would've been the least interesting thing ever. And even then, his fake smile keeps in place, even if the actual emotions behind it are clear as day, while alone in his destroyed tower. It might be to fool himself like he fools others, but I think his smile is not able to be dropped, let it be part of his deal or part of his punishment, Alastor will never be seen without his smile. [^4]
Overall i feel like Alastor does care about the Hotel staff and guests to a certain extent. I can't fully trust it, and I'd be less than surprised if I were to be wrong, but there are scenes where he seems too much like he cares.
Tumblr media
Moving along on the song, the next lyrics are rather straightforward forward "I'm hungry for freedom like never before. The constraints of my deal surely have a backdoor" circling back to what I mentioned above. His current goal is to escape this deal that is constricting his powers, powers that would most likely have saved him from the injury he sustained. The next and final lines"Once I figure out how to unclip my wings. Guess who will be pulling all the strings?" strongly point towards how he is unable to use his full strength, that his full potential can't be reached while he is still under this deal he made. The thought of Alastor not being at his full potential in his fight with Adam is on some level truly terrifying, a Sinner can reach these kinds of powers in hell that he is able to fight someone like Adam, the first man, someone with approximately the same amount of power Lilith must have? I've just today talked to a friend of one about it. Yes, Alastor lost the fight, but he held up quite well and was a worthy opponent to the point that Adam had to seriously take a second, stop joking around, and concentrate on the fight to get a single hit on Alastor. All of this while Alastor also got a few hits in, not as strong as the ones he had to endure later on, but still. They were hits.
Regardless, in the end, Alastor came very close to dying, and that was for a cause that wasn't just for himself. Seeing what Adam did to the Hotel (or Sir Pentious while we're at it), Alastor has to honestly be glad he even survived that blow directly to his chest. There surely was some plot armor behind this decision, but it's still believable when we trust the theory that Alastor made a deal with someone far more powerful than anyone expects.
Tumblr media
This show, and Alastor specifically, has taken over my thoughts completely.
[^1]: in my eyes his being a cannibal points to how he has a need for superiority. To always prove his worth. In his days alive he was a serial killer, a hunter, and now in hell, he has aspects of a deer, a prey animal. The cannibalism is purely to show that he is still on top, that he is superior even to those similar to him, to those that are the same as him. He might have characteristics of a prey animal, but he stays the hunter.
[^2]: this strengthens my theory that Alastor is also afraid of dying whiteout escaping the deal he is currently still bound to. I touch on it in this post a bit more clearly, it's almost at the end of the post.
[^3]: I'd like to link everyone to this post for some thoughts on the eyes in this scene. It's incredibly well written and I couldn't have phrased it better.
[^4]: the closest we ever get to not seeing him, or more part of him, not smiling is shortly before he vanishes from the fight with Adam. His shadow can be seen frowning in the background before quickly correcting itself. It's a blink-and-you-miss-it kind of situation.

NOTE: In case anyone is wondering, I added the gif below the video because the video cut off the moment where Charlie pulls Vaggie closer and I wanted it in.
Now, I am going to ramble on in various bulllet points why I love this scene, from what I've notice and what other people have noticed in this reprise as well. Be prepared for a long post. And enjoy.
Vaggie's soft "Charlie?" when she sees her girlfriend upset. And Charlie being honest about her fears of losing instead of putting on a smile and brave face like she did earlier in the episode.
Vaggie's starting off the reprise by reminding Charlie of all the good she's done and all of the people she's helped by creating the Hotel.
When Vaggie starts singing, Charlie still has a forlorn expression on her face but immediately smiles when Vaggie touches her cheek; and unlike her big and implicitly forced smiles earlier in the episode, it's a small smile that shows she's still scared but deeply appreciates her girlfriend's comfort. And when Vaggie touches her cheek, Charlie goes to touch the former's wrist.
Vaggie grabbing Charlie's hand and guiding her from the dark to the light. Symbolism, anyone?
Possibly my favorite line from Vaggie in the song - "And in the end, if it's only me you saved" - Vaggie isn't a sinner but a fallen Exorcist Angel that Charlie found and rescued from near death; so, she doesn't need to be redeemed in a literal sense. But, here? Vaggie is telling Charlie that even if everything goes wrong, that even if they don't know that their plan to redeem Sinners will work, that whatever happens, Charlie must know ONE thing - the Princess saved the Soldier not only from death but also saved her soul. Vaggie was cast out by Lute and Adam for showing mercy but then rescued by the Princess of Hell who's all about mercy and forgiveness. Vaggie is telling Charlie that the latter helped her own redemption.
Charlie's smile going from a small, tired small to an even bigger, love-filled one. Vaggie's emotional comfort really helped calm Charlie's fears.
Another line from the couple that I really love, "There's something that I've been dying to say" - For the past 6 months, the duo have been under enormous stress from the upcoming 2nd extermination, helping to redeem Sinners, being mocked from all corners, and personal issues (i.e., Charlie hurt and angry over Vaggie's secrecy). It's been fast-paced and chaotic, so much they haven't been given a moment to really just be a couple. And the next day, they have to face off against Heaven's Army and might not make it. But in this quiet moment, Charlie and Vaggie are able to fully express their love for one another for the first time in a long time. No interruptions, no business, just them. And honestly, I LOVE the line so much.
Just the look of peace and vulnerability from Charlie when Vaggie gently strokes the former's hair and cheek. The Princess has been so stressed and scared but having the love of her life be by her is a truly calming presence.
The happy sighs they both make after they kiss.
Charlie pulling Vaggie closer while they are kissing.
Possible wedding foreshadowing. That's it. I predict marriage given how they are positioned. And I hope I am right.
They definitely had sex after this. I mean, you can hear them sigh happily once they kiss, Charlie pulls her closer, and they're going into battle the next day.
French version of the song translates, “More than anything” to “Tu es tout pour moi” which directly translates to “You are everything for me” or “You are my everything”.
Again in the French version, “Need you to know I love you more than anything” becomes “Je t’aime par-dessus tout et je ne veux que toi” which translates to “I love you above all and I only want you”.
In the Italian version, the line is translated to, "Whatever happens, just know that/You are my everything".

We all noticed how Alastor only ever seems to sing reprises, or how he only ever interrupts songs by others. It fits his personality and character so damn much its amazing.
He sung a reprise of Charlie's song in the pilot to get into her good graces. He interrupted Vox and Lucifer's solos, using their own melody to against them to assert dominance and make the song his own. He takes and steals and bends himself to fit any situation.
But he WASNT DOING that in the finale
Tumblr media
His melody was vastly different from the others. It didn't fit in the song.
Even the Vees' verse somewhat fit in with the theme, playing on the same beat, but not Alastor's. He changed the whole tune, grabbed at the lively beat and forced it down.
Tumblr media
He was alone. There was no audience to play for. No need to pretend.
Tumblr media
For the first time, we got ALASTOR'S song. No masks. No performances for anyone else. He didn't play off others, no. This is HIS melody, and no one else's.
I saw a lot of people complain how his part didn't fit into the song and YES THAT'S THE POINT. HE DOESN'T FIT IN. He only sings to the song's tune when he was back with the others. Alone, he never sung to the same beat. We can see now, clear as day how he never was on the same wavelength as the others. He doesn't associate himself with the main cast, nor with the villainous vees. He works alone, he doesn't need a harmony from companions, he refuses to.
We're finally starting to see him.

Alastor's Smile
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During "The Show Must Go On" when Alastor crawled into his wrecked radio station, the Overlord’s near-death experience at Adam’s hands has caused him to enter an honest-to-God nervous breakdown. Even though he still kept a smile, the rest of his body and wild eyes makes it clear that we aren't seeing the composed gentleman anymore, but a man in the middle of a mental breakdown as he grows even more rattled and desperate.
We see him struggling to come to terms with the realization that he’s grown to care for the Hotel residents as friends, his fear of how the public would perceive him if they found out, and how his sheer desperation to free himself from the deal he’s trapped in is driving him mad, all with a smile on his face.
Not wanting to make himself vulnerable by showing weakness, he instead doubles down on his dark nature and his efforts to get out of the deal he’s trapped in, concluding the segment declaring that once he finds a loophole, he’ll be the one in control, which hints at very bad things for the future.
During his part of the song, Alastor seems less concerned with the fact that he almost died than with the fact of how others would react to his death. He is so obsessed with how others perceive him that he isn’t bothered by the fact that he almost died, but how it would have ruined his public image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What makes the lyrics in his song more painful is that Alastor privately admitted to having grown attached to the residents during a conversation with Niffty. But his losing to Adam has shaken his pride, causing him to push away whatever sort of attachment he was forming with the hotel residents out of fear of showing weakness again.
His earlier admission was a possible hint he could be redeemed, but he's chosen his pride over genuine friendship. Doesn't help that the main cast (except Lucifer and Husk) have actually come to genuinely care about Alastor. While building the new hotel even gave him a brand new radio studio to work in and engage a group hug with him when he reappeared again for the re-opening, with even Vaggie joining in with a smile over seeing him unharmed.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alastor's gotten genuine friends within the Hazbin-crew and yet, he is so scared over coming off as "weak" over that fact that he rather doubles down on his ambitions and deny any notion of his own growing humanity to keep his own mental well-being together. Remember why Alastor is always smiling so that no one will know his true thoughts?
Here, he's still smiling while completely alone and obviously having a mental breakdown, implying the actual reason is that it's physically impossible for him to stop.

I MUST RANT
Tumblr media
Everyone's talking about Angel Dust's line in "Loser, Baby" where he owns being a porn star, loving sex and being an addict—but no one's talking about Husk's next line afterwards:
Tumblr media
This means that Husk still has the power of an Overlord.
This means that once his deal with Alastor is broken, fulfilled, etc. that Husk will still be an Overlord! He still sits at the table with Vox, Valentino, Velvette, Carmilla, Rosie and the others and still has cards he can play to his advantage.
I imagine once Alastor flees, is defeated, dies, breaks his own contract, Husk will likely be the Overlord to protect the hotel with Charlie. Gain back some territory Alastor basically swiped from him for pennies on the dollar during his deal.

I've seen a couple posts now talking about the concept of an AU where Vox somehow gains control over Alastor's soul/contract. While I do agree with the common take that he'd probably try to mind control Alastor or break his spirit at first, I think he'd actually get bored of that pretty quickly. Alastor's appeal is all in his personality; putting him in a situation where he just shuts down and stops giving the reactions that make him who he is would lose its novelty for Vox within a month or two.
Imo, from there I see it turning into a "gilded cage" situation. Vox sets up a nice little club for Alastor to live in; it's classy and Alastor is free to do what he pleases with it, but he cannot leave and whatever Vox says goes. It's a kind of faux freedom that's just tolerable enough for him not to go insane, but just restrictive enough that he still feels like some kind of pet. Vox isn't physically around that often, but he's always watching; Alastor's free to make his own choices, but can only chose from a small, pre-approved set of options. It's actually not too dissimilar to the situation he put his own contractees in, and Alastor loathes that fact.

there was an update you know the drill. time to go nuts with each pannel.
I LOVE HOW IN THE FIRST PAGE WE DIRECTLY GET HIT WITH SO MANY EMOTIONS FROM EVERY ONE OF THE BOYS.
Tumblr media
Wild with the realisation that he didnt finish this all, not yet. Theres still danger, the same thing that almost killed his brother is still breathing and can if it wants to do the same with the rest of his newfound family
Tumblr media
Twilight i feel like is almost the same as Wild, but for other reasons. The Shadow almost took his life, and after he thought that it was finally dead, boom. That thing is still out there and maybe is gonna be around for some more time.
He wants to believe that theres something else also opening the gates, that the Shadow is really dead and it's just another weird monster who opened the one that Sky saw
Tumblr media
Hyrule confirms it, and reminds Twi that no, the damn thing is still out there and will go in a hunting game with each one of them.
Tumblr media
Wild realised his mistake, he didn't kill it, he destroyed it's defenses. What if he stayed and searched for every piece of the Shadow and destroy it? They will be having this same conversation? He hopes to at least for it to happend in another time
Tumblr media
Wind got a point here, if youre not sure of all it's tricks it looked like it was finally dead. Wild and any of them would have never guessed if it was the end or not. Not even Time
side note but
Tumblr media
Wild looks so sad here, no not sad. Guilty is the word. He feels like he failed, again. If he thought more what to do maybe his brothers will not be in danger
Tumblr media
OKAY I WANT TO STOP IN HERE FOR JUST A SEC.
I know it is maybe something without importance, but the fact that Four is the one who we are focused, how he looks like he's carefull listening Wild's words of auto-inflicted guilt. He looks like hes thinking the statement carefully, Wild didn't failed shit, it wasnt his faoult that they were trapped in this whole mess across time, and Four knows it.
Tumblr media
We are stopping being serious for a moment just to admire this. theyre confused. thinking. out of context even. idk. i love this specific pannel. theyre such a mood.
Tumblr media
we need to stop a second more because goddamn it this pannel slaps
The representation of Time being surronded by the choice of help his descendant or kill the thing that hurted him in the first place, he's just a man who got throught a lot, and even after all thta he's still trapped in this choosing what to do (both options will have consquences) thing
Tumblr media
and here we got more of Wars being the traditional paramedic of the group! I remember a person saying that yeah Hyrule can heal people with magic, but Warriors participated in a war, so he knows basic treathening and i think thats so perfect and true for his character
Tumblr media
theyre still processing the fact that Twilight and Wolfie are the same, it haven't been discussed properly since Twi woke up, and i think it will be in a future when everyone is more settled down
Tumblr media
this man doesn't regret the danger he put himself under, he knows it was for the safety of his brothers and to stop this madness
also he was tired of it running like a total coward from them, if it was going to kill them at least it shouldn't run from what it started!
Tumblr media
oh no. he caught you Twi. now you will suffer the consequences of putting yourself in danger so many times with them not knowing
Tumblr media
oh four. You really know what youre saying
youre the one who know the most that theyre doing better than it could
Tumblr media
if this means that theyre finally using all their items im so in for the whole chaos that it would bring in the fights
Legend has a shit ton of items and weapons, mostly inclined to magic, i need to see that.
Tumblr media
i remembered something
Jojo said that Hyrule will have more importance in the future, if this means something... Oh shit
im not highing up my expectations, but i know that we will see his enemies sooner than we expect
and that will not end up well for the ones who don't know how to manage them
Tumblr media
this background, no words. 10/10.
Tumblr media
These two pannels killed me
Time is directly watching his descendant, and Twilight knows well why. He doesn't blames him, he knows that he scared them all to death. He doesn't want to go throught that with one of them too
Tumblr media
this confirms that Sky can sense what makes Fi react, he can feel when she's upset with something, maybe he felt the anger when Twi got hurt, her fury whne she couldn't defend him. That's her duty right? Protect and serve her masters
Tumblr media
sky i love you this was so unserious and out of place such a perfect ending of update
NOW THE THING THAT EVERYONE WAS WAITING
WARRIORS GOT HIS EMOTIONAL SUPPORT SCARF BACK!!!!1!!!

I've been thinking of this line from Happy Day in Hell since the song first released:
"To change their minds and touch their hearts. Or whatever angels have."
It could be interpreted as Charlie doesn't know much about angels and they could contain their goodness and purity in something other than a heart. Maybe like a magic sack like the witches in The Owl House.
But I thought it could be Charlie subconsciously believing that since they're killing her people so mercilessly, angels are heartless. Her optimism keeps her from fully processing the idea though. Especially with her tone of voice sounding like "Or whatever . . . angels have", like she's trying to convince herself of something.
This was before Welcome to Heaven and the only angels Charlie had met since then were Lucifer and Vaggie. They were both cast out of Heaven or hurt by them, Lucifer being thrown into Hell for giving mankind free will and Vaggie being mutilated for saving a child, even if Charlie doesn't know the second part yet. Her experience with angels is not a positive one.

I really like this line from Hell's Greatest Dad:
"Who needs a busboy now that you've got the chef?"
It's just about how Lucifer is calling Alastor just some busboy that can be easily replaced while he's calling himself the one and only and that it'd be damn near impossible to replace him.
Idk I just really like looking at word choices, especially when it's teeny tiny details :)

I just noticed something really funny in Hell’s Greatest Dad.
When Lucifer starts the song, the main background colors are all red and gold.
When Alastor pops in he deliberately changes the colors to green and purple.
And while this is a huge reference to his neon colors from his song in the pilot, it is also, noticeably, on the exact opposite side of the color wheel from Lucifer’s chosen colors.
Red vs green
Gold/yellow vs purple
This is especially apparent near the end where they’re pushing each other back and forth and the background colors literally follow with them. Gold being Lucifer’s and purple being Alastor’s.
TL;DR Alastor had so much beef with Lucifer, to the point of deliberately painting himself and half of the song in the opposite colors even though his actual main color is red.

Alastor Has NPD Because I Said So: A Shitty Analysis
Grandiose sense of self-importance. Overestimating their capabilities or holding themselves to unreasonably high standards. Bragging or exaggerating their achievements.
It's pretty clear he thinks highly of himself. I like to think that not only does he love radio, but, being The Radio Demon, he believes himself to be heavily associated with it as if it's part of him. So when he gloats about radio being a superior medium of self expression, he's speaking about himself as well.
Tumblr media
He was gone for seven years, and it's pretty blatant that he expects everyone else to care about that. Even if he would most certainly not give a true answer had he been acknowledged, he's desperate for that "where have you been" attention, and gets pissed when it's not received. He just naturally assumes he's important enough that other overlords would be concerned about his absence.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Assuming his smile is something he chooses to do (ignoring the stitch mark theories), it's a very visible high standard he holds himself to, and according to Viv, it's something he judges others for as well. Even alone, he refuses to drop his smile.
Frequent fantasies about having or deserving success
The finale song showcases this well, as he outright states that he wants power/control, to be "holding all the strings"
Tumblr media
Belief in superiority. Thinking they’re special or unique. Believing they should associate only with those they see as worthy.
This goes pretty hand in hand with what I wrote in point one tbh. It seems evident that he's picky about who he's friends with as well, for example he only associates with Charlie for power.
Tumblr media
Need for admiration. Fragile self-esteem. Frequent self-doubt, self-criticism or emptiness. Preoccupation with knowing what others think of them. Fishing for compliments.
This is more of an internal thing, which can be hard to see in a character that hides his emotions so heavily. But you can see hints of it in his reaction when his commercial is criticized, he's proud and asks for feedback, and immediately reacts negatively and gets defensive upon criticism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He had a breakdown over the thought of his image being tainted for saving his 'friends', he's less worried about his actual injury and rather the humiliation of being defeated over something so uncharacteristic of him.
Tumblr media
Entitlement. Inflated sense of self-worth. Expecting favorable treatment (to an unreasonable degree). Anger when people don’t cater to or appease them.
The first point is basically what I already spoke about, I don't think he really expects favorable treatment (perhaps internally, but he doesn't demand it)
That last point can be showcased with how he reacts to Lucifer, who didn't acknowledge him at all and criticized his work. He was obviously pretty openly pissed when Lucifer wasn't sucking up to him and his work.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Willingness to exploit others. Consciously or unconsciously using others. Forming friendships or relationships with people who boost their self-esteem or status. Deliberately taking advantage of others for selfish reasons.
Do I need to say more than Charlie :/ and also like everyone ever that he interacts with 😭
Tumblr media
Lack of empathy. Saying things that might hurt others. Seeing the feelings, needs or desires of others as a sign of weakness. Not returning kindness or interest that others show.
Yeah I don't think the guy who hurts people for a living cares too much about hurting others-
And of course back to the smile thing, he sees anyone who doesn't mask as heavily he does as weak, he looks down on those who display their emotions so openly.
Frequent envy. Feeling envious of others, especially when others are successful. Expecting envy from others. Belittling or diminishing the achievements of others.
I don't actually see too much of this symptom in him, though I think it's more of an internal thing for the most part.
Arrogance. Patronizing behavior. Behaving in a way that’s snobby or disdainful. Talking down or acting condescendingly.
He seems to act most condescendingly around Vaggie, especially in the pilot, he's downright disrespectful. His interactions with Charlie upon trying to cheer her up comes off as very patronizing too.

Songs in Hazbin Hotel
I've noticed that in Hazbin Hotel, in each episode they have 2 songs (obviously), but of those two, one is a song for drama/plot and the other is a song for fun.
The fun ones tend to be like: simple message, more memorable lyrics, fast paced, the characters are enjoying themselves, has a catchy beat.
The Drama/plot ones tend to be like: hard to describe concept, intense feeling behind the song, song that changes a character in their arc/sets a scene, slow paced, maybe not as memorable lyrics, ballad.
Remember, these songs are styled off of Broadway songs, fun songs are there to describe a character, drama songs describe a scene or part of the story, the character's feeling in that moment.
Let's look at some examples;
Overture: The Opening act so to speak...
Happy day in hell: Drama song, Starts slow moving into a ballad, this song sets the scene and plot of the entire show, how Charlie has hope and optimism despite the terrible landscape, people and circumstances around her.
Hell is Forever: Fun song, Details Adam's character and establishes him as the villain, certified bop with a catchy beat. It could be argued that it establishes the ordeal of the season, but that's in the last 30 seconds, and more importantly, Adam is singing this to have fun and throw his weight around Charlie.
Radio Killed the Video Star: We meet our secondary antagonists and the plot moves forward.
Stayed Gone: Fun song, Made to establish the rivalry between Vox and Alastor, but that was established before hand. This is mainly a song of Alastor and Vox going at each other. It also has a fast pace, and is memorable quippage between the two characters.
It starts with Sorry: Drama song, Slow paced ballad establishing sir Pentious being accepted into the group.
Scrambled eggs: Showcases the other overlords, and hints at things to come down the line (I.e Alastor's scheming and the killable angels)
Respectless: Fun Song, Another Quarreling song with a fast pace, and characters moving to the rhythm, words having a bouncy effect.
Whatever it takes: Establishing Vaggie and Camilla's characters as well as their parallel, you might argue that makes it fun. Of course, the song is slow paced (ballad), and the characters are singing about how the desire to protect the ones they love (intense emotion), as well as their worry about what may come.
Masquerade: An episode covering Angeldust and his tragic life. This one was hard to determine, neither are ballads.
Poison: This song might be considered fun, as I've seen many covers and it's fast paced, good song to dance to. However, it also has Angel being very upset with his situation.
Loser, Baby: This one is slow paced, and has Angel comes to terms with the fact that he's not alone in his situation. However, he also is much happier than the song before.
I've got to say in the end though, I think Poison is the fun song, as it details an already prevalent situation describing Angel's life. Loser, Baby is the song for Drama as it details a main part of Angel's arc going forward (the begininng is like a ballad).
Dad beat Dad: An introduction to Charlie's father and previously mentioned Daddy's issues.
Hell's Greatest Dad: Obviously Fun song, it's a quarreling song, also borrowing elements from "Friend like me," Showcasing Lucifer's power as King and showing the main two men in Charlie's life compete for her attention.
More than anything: Obviously Drama song, very ballad song, this is where Lucifer and Charlie get into the deep seated reasoning behind their actions, showing how much they care about each other, by the end Lucifer decides to support Charlie's endeavors.
Welcome to Heaven: Introducing the other side the afterlife, the home realm of the antagonists, Charlie makes her case, and we learn the truth of Vaggie's origins.
Welcome to Heaven: Fun song, introducing everyone to the atmosphere that is heaven. How is this different from "Happy day in Hell"? It is faster, has a faster pace, and you can tell the voice of Saint Peter, Emily and Sera are enjoying themselves whilst singing, especially Darren.
You Didn't Know: Drama song, mainly slow paced, as truths are revealed and ethics are questioned. Mostly a ballad, except for Adam and Lute with aggressive words and rhythm, Much longer than the other song.
Hello, Rosie: Approach to the innermost cave, smoothing out the final wrinkles before the final act. Bonds are firmly established and a game plan is made.
Out for Love: Fun song, fast paced, establishes what we already know, Vaggie is and should be driven by her love for Charlie, as Camilla was driven by love for her daughters. Vaggie gets her wings back, but they don't play a huge role in the plot and are not discussed in the song.
Ready for this: Drama Song, starts slow and ballad-y, and not as fast paced as "Out for love." Mainly a song to attempt to recruit the army needed to fight the angels, as well as establish her cementing her drive to fight to protect her home. Also hints at Alastor's intentions, but that's negligible.
The Show must go on: The Final act... This one was also hard as both are ballads.
More than Anything reprise: Seeing as this is a reprise of a drama song, it might be drama as well as the characters detailing intense emotions, however the song is quite short and details what we already know.
Finale: This is mirrored to another Drama song, being "Happy day in Hell," but everyone seems to be enjoying themselves, of course it is longer.
In the end, I put "More than anything reprise" as Fun, because it doesn't give us anything except something for shippers. "Finale" I ended up classifying as the drama song because it is setting the final scene, and hinting at what's to come. It also showcases how far everyone has come, which is also plot related.

Hazbin Hotel - Happy Day in Hell Song Analysis
When Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure was coming out I loved doing breakdowns on it's song, so I want to try to do the same for Hazbin Hotel.
Happy Day in Hell might not seem like much when you first listen to it, other then a fun introduction song to Charlie's plan for the Hotel and the Sinners but it can actually tell us quite a bit not just about Charlie but the state of Hell too. Also keep in mind that this is purely going of the lyrics alone.
I can do this Somehow, I know it I'll get Heaven behind my plans (Charlie, hold on-)
Much like in the Pilot we get Charlie's song that details her goals, but in this specific case it seems to be more to hype herself up for the upcoming meeting with Heaven's representatives rather then trying to convince someone that the Hotel is a good idea. But just like in the Pilot we have Vaggie telling to not to get too excited because unlike Charlie she knows how shitty people can be, and Charlie knows too but she looks at it very differently as we'll see.
There's just no way I could blow it Not this once in a lifetime chance (It's just a meeting.)
One in a lifetime chance is interesting because Charlie is seemingly immortal and in all her hundreds of years she has never gotten to have a meeting with Heaven. Presumably her idea for the Hotel was something she must have had for a while so for this to be her first chance to have a meeting of this sort shows how stubborn Heaven's representatives are.
And once again we have Vaggie saying that it's just a meeting but this feels more like her saying that Charlie shouldn't look at this like it's the end all be all to her dreams for the Hotel.
To change their minds And touch their hearts Or whatever angels have... (This could be bad...)
Changing Hell's opinion if one thing and already hard enough but Heaven should be even harder because of their superiority complex that they hold. Also interesting that Charlie doesn't know if angel's have hearts despite Lucifer being a fallen angel. She could ask him, and maybe she did but Lucifer refused to talk about his past.
Vaggie seems to know that Charlie will have a hard time dealing with angels and that could be because Sinners have had more close up encounters with them, at least the Exterminator kind.
Royals and Overlords seem to be mostly guarded during extermination with the possibility of the Morningstar family being the only exception for killing as they are the rulers of Hell and Lucifer does keep things in some type of order at least so it's possible that God told the Exterminators not to touch them, thus giving Charlie very limited encounters with angels.
Cheer up, Vaggie! This could be swell Something tells me that today will be a happy day in Hell!
Like in the Pilot, Charlie cheers Vaggie up when she seems too worried about what Charlie wants to do. This will probably be a theme, Vaggie being physically protective while Charlie is the emotionally protective one. That little twirl that they do is adorable too and shows that Charlie probably takes the lead when it comes to more spontaneous activities for the two, where I imagine Vaggie to be more of the planning type.
Okay, but just don't sing to them- That bitch is halfway down the street! Is she- Oh, she's dancin' Uuugh, no...
No one else seems to care that Charlie is singing and dancing except for Vaggie and this is probably because Vaggie knows how hard of time Charlie has with being taken seriously. Sing and dancing down the street probably doesn't help but it's one of the many things that makes Charlie stand out.
There's a warm fuzzy feeling that wafts through the air Every street's so revealing, it's hard not to stare It's a realm so appealing, it beats anywhere If you don't mind the smell... It's a happy day in Hell!
This is the first showing, at least in the show, of how much Charlie loves Hell and it's people. Hell isn't a place of suffering for her, it gives her warm fuzzy feelings while being literally on fire, to her it's beating with life even while demons are shown to be mangled up in the streets.
She sees all these things but she's not grossed out by them like many people would be, she sees beauty in them and wants others to see the beauty in Hell too. She does acknowledge the smell of rotting bodies, showing that she does know it has it's problems but she still loves it.
Not to mention the couple having sex in front of the open window which seems to be normal in Hell, which while funny also showed that Charlie had no real problem seeing it. She was more disturbed by the rotting corpse. Meaning that Charlie is kink positive, we love to see that.
Hi, mister!GO FUCK YOURSELF!
The first person that she talks to is already rude as fuck to her, but her tone doesn't drop in the slightest. I would imagine her not being that phased by a greeting like that but would also probably want to be greeted in a more friendly way.
There's an endless trash fire that's burning my soul! (Hello!) Got a ton of barbed wire to shove in his hole! (Ah- 'scuse me!) Doin' what is required, we all have our role I'm not doin' well... Another shitty day in Hell!
Now we see the perspective of the Sinners. To them every day in Hell is shitty, filled with pain and misery with little to look forward to. Even if Charlie greets them they either ignore her or insult her, showing just how little they care about anyone else but themselves. And why would they if in their point of view, they are condemned to an eternal suffering in Hell, in the Pride Ring no less with no way to travel to the other Rings. Vaggie could be the exemption to the traveling rule since she's dating Charlie.
If I can show them the dream I've dreamed That any soul can change Those angels's hearts are hard to change Then they will know everyone can be redeemed From the evil to the strange! They're bloodthirsty and deranged!
Two things here: first is Charlie singing about how she's gonna show the angels how the Sinners can be redeemed, how she is sure she will make them better, no matter how hard it may be or how evil or strange they are.
And then we have a Sinner echoing Vaggie's concerns from before: the angel's hearts, if they have them, are hard to change because they're bloodthirsty killers and crazy. For the people of Hell to think this way of them, the angels must be absolute pieces of work to deal with and Charlie will absolutely not have an easy time talking to them, let alone convincing them of her dream.
I can hear all their stories, the lost and displaced And I know that they're more of an acquired taste But if I open the door and I give them a place At my Hazbin Hotel It'll be a happy day in Hell!
Charlie really does think that anyone deserves a chance, and in her Happy Hotel she believes they can do better, no matter the mistakes they've made. If she gives them a place to feel safe, away from the constant danger of other Sinners or Exterminations, she feels that the Sinners can become a better version of themselves. Making them feel safe is probably a big step towards them opening up about their feelings but that would be only the first in a long process.
From the porn studio Where the cinephiles go To watch award-winning demon bukkake shows! To the cannibal town Where they don't wear a frown 'Cause- holy shit ew my gosh WHY?
The award-winning demon is most likely Angel Dust, and the cannibal town is where Alastor is from so it's very likely that Charlie would have visited both of these locations more then once with them. And again she sounds way more grossed out by the cannibals eating someone's corpse the she does by the bukkake sex shows, so sex is probably something she's more comfortable with then violence despite both having a very heavy presence in Hell.
And I don't give a crow that His brains got in my eye! 'Cause I know I can spare them From Heaven's genocide!
She doesn't seem to care how much of a punching bag she is or how much she suffers in the process as long as she can save her people from dying in Heaven's yearly exterminations. This definitely shows that Charlie is probably one of the most, if maybe the most selfless person in Hell, and right now maybe the only one who could come close to qualifying to go to Heaven. At least she would if she wasn't Lucifer and Lilith's daughter but I wanna go more in depth for that another time.
I can do this, I just know it There's an endless trash fire that's burning my soul! I'll get Heaven behind my plans! There's just no way I could blow it Kinda like the barbed wire that's stuffed in my hole! (Perv!)
Sinners may be suffering around her right now but Charlie believes with everything she has that she can end this for them. She's looking at this meeting with rose-tinted glasses perhaps because this is the first time ever that Heaven has acknowledged her pleas enough to allow her to talk to them. But based on how they act in Helluva Boss they absolutely won't care about the suffering of those they deem to be below them, which is also Charlie herself, despite her status as the heiress of Hell.
Not this once in a lifetime chance To change their minds And touch my parts! Uhhh, no thank you, I'm just gonna… Fulfill my destiny! Your loss, bitch!
Since the subtitles of the song say Charlie talks to a demon wearing a trench coat it's safe to assume that he flashed her. Charlie seems more awkward than anything and wanting to shuffle away as fast as possible, which is perceived as rude by the demon. This also tells us that either they don't care that Charlie is a princess or they simply aren't scared enough of her.
With Alastor and Stolas their very presence makes fellow demons pause and fear them, with the only ones who can disrespect them being those of their own rank or higher. With Charlie this doesn't seem to be case because she is literally too nice for these demons to bother respecting her. It's very likely that they see Charlie as too soft, and in Hell fear seems to be what gets you respect, not status.
I can already tell... Today is gonna be a fuckin' happy day in Hell!!!
Finally Charlie gets to the building the meeting will presumably be held in and as chaos goes on behind her she tells herself one last time that it's gonna be a happy day. She's not ignoring the shit that's going on in Hell, she knows there are issues there but she went through all of that and she still got to her goal of having this meeting. This is probably foreshadowing of all the challenges that she'll have to overcome to get her dream to even be taken seriously, let alone achieved.

Hazbin Hotel: Poison Song
The song became controversial due to the visuals that accompany it were seem as portraying the topic of sexual abuse in an insensitive and some sort of sick fetish, but not from Angel Dust's perspective. Let me explain:
Valentino's Obsession and Control
Tumblr media
Valentino's behavior towards Angel extends beyond professional boundaries, crossing into personal and sexual territory. His obsession with Angel Dust is evident in his relentless pursuit and control over him, which includes forcing himself upon Angel Dust and engaging in non-consensual acts. The series does not shy away from depicting the grim reality of such abusive relationships, challenging the audience to confront the severity of these issues.
Angel's inability to break free from Valentino's grip is symbolized by a contract that legally binds him to his abuser. The series hints at the possibility of escape, suggesting that the contract's dissolution could be the key to the sinner's liberation. However, the power to terminate this contract lies with Valentino, leaving Angel in a state of limbo and dependence.
Coping Mechanism and Self-Destruction
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Angel was bound by a contract to Valentino, faces a harrowing existence under his dominion. Valentino, who is both Angel Dust's employer in the adult film industry and his abuser, employs gaslighting tactics to keep Angel Dust in line. The series showcases the psychological impact of such abuse, with Angel Dust being subjected to poor mistreatment and threats that leave him feeling trapped and hopeless.
Angel Dust's coping strategy involves substance abuse and self-sabotage, hoping to become so broken that Valentino will lose interest in him. This tragic approach to dealing with trauma is a reflection of the harsh reality faced by many abuse victims, who sometimes resort to self-harm in an effort to become unappealing to their abusers.
Tumblr media
It is worth noting that Valentino is the one who should be freaking out in this scene, not Angel Dust, because actually managing to piss off Lucifer's daughter is like a mouse finally poking a lazy cat into action. But Charlie's demeanor is so unthreatening that even when she is clearly going to break Valentino like a twig for his behavior, Valentino isn't threatened and Angel actually stops Charlie from attacking him, seeing her as the one in danger. This is noted to be a favorite tactic of real-life abusers, in which they psychologically bind their victims so badly that they themselves will refuse help from people who would've saved them with little effort.
Angel's meltdown when Husk rejects him one too many times is both this and even more sadder, reminding us that Valentino's abuse has all but fully convinced Angel that his only worth is sex. As well as after Husk called him fake right before the meltdown, his eyes glow magenta and he gets up in Husk’s face.
The Music
The 'Poison' music video serves as a metaphorical exploration of Angel Dust's entrapment and addiction to the toxic relationship with Valentino. Visual elements such as pink smoke-like chains represent Valentino's control, while the ambiguous nature of their sexual encounters raises questions about consent. The video culminates in a scene that encapsulates the fear and distress Angel Dust experiences, highlighting the cyclical nature of abuse.
At one point in the song Angel straight up says that he can only blame himself instead of pinning any of it on "the poisoner" for all the abuse he's being put through. A harrowing reminder of how too many a victim feels like they've brought their suffering upon themselves or, worse, believe they deserve it.
Throughout the sequence, Angel is trying to maintain his "mask" of super-confidence and semi-aggressive sexuality on camera... but the mask keeps slipping. His face flashes from resigned, to frightened, to just plain tired, before he has to fake enthusiasm again. Worse, Valentino appears to be deliberately throwing Angel off his stride whenever he successfully gets into character: for example, when during the dance sequence between Angel and Valentino, Angel's doing a good job of appearing graceful and seductive...until Valentino literally yanks Angel's soul-contract chain to bring him crashing to the ground, a move that clearly startles Angel.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
During the final dance sequence, the Angel we see "happily" dancing on stage is contrasted with his "real" self shown on screens surrounding him, going through the agonizing abuse that Valentino subjects him to. When Valentino arrives and drags Angel off to be raped again, it's flipped on its head — now the Angel on stage is fearful and upset while his screen counterpart "happily" continues the dance. "I disassociate, disappear" indeed...

Hazbin Hotel, top 5 songs.
One of the most praised things about Hazbin Hotel is the music. It's no secret it was mostly based on Broadway musicals. Everyone has their favorites, so let me share my picks.
Number 5.: More than anything.
youtube
So, I actually have a very difficult relationship with my own father, so this hits personal for me.
Just seeing a father love his child unconditionally and supporting their dreams brings a tear to my eye and makes me happy.
Also, Lucifer's voice is so beautiful.
Number 4: Hell is forever.
youtube
People love villains. This is a fact. They've been often considered the best songs in any film. So as the first song from Adam, the main villain this song deserves it's spot.
With it's upbeat tempo and lyrics that make Adam more and more punchable with every word, It's wonderful. It'd probably be higher if not for.
Number 3
youtube
I personally consider Velvette the most interesting of the Vs, sadly she has easily the least screen time. But quality over quantity right?
With a great contrast between Carmillia's bold classic tones and Velvette's more techno rhythm, this is probably the best villain song in Hazbin Hotel.
Number 2: The show must go on.
youtube
They say leave them wanting more, and this song embodies this sentiment perfectly.
With a great performance with the entire cast, starting with an upbeat work song from the heroes, shifting to a high rhythm energy with sinister vibes from Valentino and Vox, to out right creepy and ominous when it cuts to Alastor. It just get's me hyped for season 2 in all the right ways.
My only real complaint in that Velvette doesn't join in with Valentino and Vox during their section.
Number 1: Loser, baby
youtube
Ok, I'm probably biased here because Husk is my favourite character. But Loser, baby is the peak of the music in this show.
With a combination of Keith David's soothing voice, great instrumentals, and a message that I think anyone suffering from trauma of any kind could use.
Yeah, sometimes we all feel like losers. But hey, it's ok to be one.
So, there's my list.

How many money does Angel have?
Cws: sex mention, implied addiction, drug ment and abuse ment (you know who I'm talking about). Oh, and also a bit of blood in an image
Ok, so, after watching to "Use Me Up (Angel's Order)" (fan music by PARANOID DJ), I started thinking of something. In the song, Angel cites how he needs money and that's the only reason of why he's having sex with some people (I know it's not canon but I think that music has good characterization), and then I remembered how he also says he liked the Hotel at first because he could "crack there rent free".
He's also one of the only characters that ever mentions money. Charlie is Miss Princess of Hell so money is never something she's need to worry about, I suppose. Vaggie is under her wing, we don't know what's Alastor's or Niffty's deal, and we know what Husk does to his. But Angel, along with the Vees, seems to be one of the most worried about money.
We know he makes lots of money for Valentino (Val says so himself), and he is a famous pole dancer, performer, actor and sex worker. He obviously makes a lot of money. But then I noticed most of it probably doesn't go to him.
Usually, I'd think he's pretty well paid, but like. Why would he? He can't leave for a better salary, Valentino literally owns his soul, so no reason to incentive him to stay by paying him nicely. Also, Valentino benefits a lot from keeping Angel low on money: he already expressed how mad he was when Angel moved to the Hotel, so we can assume that it's because he wants Angel close to him. If Angel can't pay rent, he'll sleep anywhere Valentino gives him.
Tumblr media
"Hey. Whatever means I can keep cracking here rent free. Crack is expensive."
Tumblr media
"🎶Small talk don't pay the bills.🎶"
We all know he joined the Hotel at first not because he believed in Charlie's cause, but because he wanted a free room.
I used to think that was a bit silly, after all he's famous and must make lots of money, but the Hotel was literally his only option. That's why he agreed to stay out of trouble and clean for two weeks (or at least pretend to), just to get a room.
To get away from Valentino.
