I just finished rereading the Spiderwick Chronicles and...man, I had read them as a kid but I'm so glad I decided to re-read them as an adult. I've gone through ups and downs with my art but sometimes I'll just have a story like this rekindle why I love making art so much.
I remember loving the drawings as a kid, but now as an adult I find myself absolutely entranced when looking at the illustrations, and I love that I can find a whole new appreciation for art like that. And not to downplay the writing either, the descriptions are so incredible, I genuinely love the characters so much and they're so endearing to read about all over again.
Anyways, for what I actually drew! At the back of the edition I have there were some unused sketches by Tony DiTerlizzi, and one of the sketches had the characters Thimbletack and Hogsqueal playing checkers together from a scene in the last chapter of the book. Something about it was just extra adorable and at first wanting to just draw it myself it then spiraled into drawing a whole illustration based on it haha. Overall I'm really happy with how it turned out!

honestly, i hate that all these studios keep dropping projects for tax write-offs and whatever, but i honestly don't blame disney for dropping the spiderwick chronicles, that SUCKED.
if it wasn't for the the names and the presence of a field guide, i would not believe it was the spiderwick chronicles AT ALL. no goblins, no gryphon, no hogsqueal, no elves, no dwarves, what's the point??? how hard is it to adapt five REALLY short books into eight episodes? jesus.

Mulgarath - The Spiderwick Chronicles (2008)
Tumblr media
Mulgarath transforms into a bird following his battle with Jared Grace and attempts to fly away with Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide, only to be caught and devoured by the hungry and vengeful hobgoblin Hogsqueal, who burps out some of Mulgarath's feathers following his meal.

Rottie for the ask game o7
If I got a Rottweiler, it would probably also be my partner's dog. But if not, I would still enjoy it.
A nice showline rottie would be fun to have in the ring. They're not my style for bite sports, but I wouldn't be opposed to working what I got. If I were to name the dog, it would be Hogsqueal, Hoggle for short.

My brother's back from urgent care and he's doing okay. Thank you all for praying!
The numbing drops weren't strong enough so he felt everything, but the piece is out and he has antibiotic drops that he needs to use for the next five days (which he's being very dramatic about. He was yelling in the bathroom while putting one in then stumbled out saying "that's a big drop, I feel like Hogsqueal just spit in my eye")

rewatched the spiderwick film just to feel something. I felt disappointment 🫶🏼 why was hogsqueal sidelined and why was the entire budget blown on the flying scene. we needed more mud creatures. we needed to see more fucked up little guys

Free the spiderwick chronicles cast list
Tumblr media
The only other annoyance is the frequent shouting with an older sister. I hate to hear child actors, using God's name as exclamations, though, but that's not Highmore's doing. Star Freddie Highmore, who seems to get cast in a lot of these fantasies Charlie And The Chocolate Family," "August Rush," "Arthur And The Invisibles," and "The Golden Compass" has a dual role in here, playing brothers "Jared"and "Simon Grace." Freddie is a fine actor, so no problem in that department. A creative enough story helped by good film-making and an eye for what kids and adults love about these movies make this film a generally good and above average family fantasy film of the past few years. This is all captured very well here and works as a fairy tale for kids 8 to whatever age. When looking at a film like this at a child you would like the magic, imagination and the story that is woven in front of you with interesting characters, environments and a grand sense of storytelling that can make the make believe into a fun and entertaining film. There were a few repeated story patterns and clichés in the script, but there were also a lot of surprises and new takes on things, so that can be forgiven. The running time moves along fairly briskly and the film is involving and interesting from the start and keeps it's energy and charm throughout the running time. The young cast each did their own and carried the film and even though I don't usually like computer generated effects in films, I didn't feel it was overdone here just for the sake of showing what today's new wonderful technology can do and I really appreciated that the film didn't go overboard with that. The story sounds simple enough, but it is enhanced by a lot of creative creatures and imaginative things going on. The film is aimed at a family audience even though some young children might be afraid of some scenes, but this is a film that I think kids will absolutely love and there is enough here for the grownups as well. I wasn't sure what I would think of The Spiderwick Chronicles, but to my surprise I thought it was pretty good. The majority of them that have been released over the past few years I have not seen because for one thing they did not look appealing to me at all and also because of bad word of mouth and reviews. Ever since The Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter films have done so well, filmmakers are taking other fantasy books and turning them into feature films as well. The ensuing battle under siege is the start of further adventures, involving Arthur's mental asylum-bound daughter Lucinda Spiderwick (Dame Joan Plowright), who divulges more surprises, while the ogre's forces stop at nothing to conquer he book for control of the magical world, which Jared gets to penetrate further then he could imagine. Also protects himself and his family from the evil monsters that want the book to do harm. Rescuing Simon, Jared meets and teams up with bird-eating Hogsqueal (Seth Rogen). Honey-addicted tiny book guardian Thimbletack (Martin Short), who lives indoors, explains it most at all cost be kept away from ogre Mulgarath (Nick Nolte) and his army of trolls et cetera, which a magical circle keeps outside, but his clueless siblings draw them there. Shy nerd Simon (Freddie Highmore) resigns to thinks, but adventurous brother Jared (Freddie Highmore) stubbornly revolts, then finds presumably deceased uncle Arthur Spiderwick's (David Strathairn's) life's work "field guide to the magical world", is stunned when the creatures it generally warns against actually inhabit the estate and explores further. The Grace twins are dragged from New York to the inherited, run-down Spiderwick estate with clueless but bossy elder brat sister Mallory (Sarah Bolger) as their divorced mother Helen (Mary-Louise Parker) couldn't afford her old job at city prices.

Have you ever read the Mars trilogy by KS Robinson? It has heaps of long passages describing lichens gene-edited to be able to grow on mars, it rules. But also have you ever thought about whether plants like lichens could survive on other planets?
ok first of all i will clarify that lichens aren’t plants but symbiotic associations of fungi and green algae, and this is important for me to say because i dont know how to tell you this but lichens are perfectly capable of surviving in the vacuum of space. there have been multiple tests with just putting The Lads into space (in one instance on the outside of the ISS) to see what happens and they just. survive? like there was one study where they had them in a russian satellite for ten days and when they came down they were either fine or recovered within three days of coming back to earth? there have been other studies too. coincidentally i made a shitpost about this about a year ago that has more sources if you’re interested in......uh.....the potential for invasion of other planets by The Lads.
no gene editing required; to survive with that kind of symbiosis, apparently you have to be tough as hell. downside is that lichens can grow incredibly slowly to the point where they can be used in archaeology to date large exposed structures (this is slightly off topic but the lichens used to date stuff are mostly crustose lichens, some lichens can grow way faster; consider the common species Lobaria pulmonaria, lungwort, which is known to engulf whole ass trees. it’s also one of the fastest growing known lichens, with some individuals being recorded as over doubling their size over the course of a particular three-year study. to be fair, this still says a lot about what’s considered ‘fast’ lichen growth). there are also lichens adapted for antarctic and mountainous conditions; the species that survived being absolutely blasted by the unforgiving nothingness of space in the russian study (Aspicilia fruticulosa) are from the highlands of central spain. they’re literally everywhere. it’s very chaotic but yeah, in short they really beat us with the evolution game in my opinion
