the ends, leaves, and outer stringy bits (if you're one of those people who peel them) of celery
tomato skins
mushroom stems
peels and trimmings of onions

skins and trimmings of ginger
the whites of green onions
stems of fresh, tender herbs (parsley and cilantro)
stems of woody herbs (thyme, rosemary), in moderation
trimmings from leeks, turnips, and fennel, in moderation

Alternate title: 
Holy shit I’m worried about all of you, please eat at cons! 
A friendly guide to travel-ready foods and snacks so y’all don’t pass out, I’m serious I saw 3 people wheeled past by EMS this weekend at katsucon ‘cause y’all were dehydrated and didn’t eat anything but noodles for 3 days. 
You can avoid being a dehydrated, starving husk of a cosplayer at 3 and 4-day conventions by doing some basic meal planning and prep before you leave. Eat like royalty and share your bounty with the masses. 
You can seriously bring your own herbs and spices. You can bring knives and flatware if you pack it in a normal suitcase and not a carry-on! Stop living on ramen, for fuck’s sake!!!! 
PART 1 - Foods that require ZERO heat sources at the convention, and you can pack it in your suitcase or carry-on through the airport.
Flavors for your water. I get it, sometimes water gets boring. Bring some flavor squirts, Gatorade powders, or citrus juice to throw into the water so  you CHUG it. Don’t be that guy who passes out from dehydration and has to pay for an ambulance.  Bring tea bags! You can cold-steep tea. 
Snack and meal bars. Trail mix. Duh. 
Fresh whole Fruit - Apples, Banana, mangos, avocados, pears, any citrus, can all be stored a room temperature and are hardy enough to throw in a suitcase and not worry. 
Dried fruit, too. 
Chopped Veggies - Bell Peppers, Carrots, Cabbage, Cucumber, Celery, all fine at room temp. 
Nut butters, like almond butter, peanut butter, can make an apple or green pepper taste awesome. You can also eat it with a spoon. 
Jelly doesn’t have to be kept in the fridge, as long as you close the lid. Uber to a nearby grocer or gas station and pick up some bread and you’ve got sandwiches! 
Rice - You’re weebs, you know what Rice Balls are. Just make a shitload of them, stuff ‘em with something from the list above, and as long as they’re kept in a sealed container, you can eat them for days. Hell, you’re even on-brand, and get to learn to make those suckers
Hard-boiled egg (with shell still on) is fine for several days at room temp.
Cheese. Most cheese is perfectly fine at room temp for a couple days. 
Oatmeal can be cooked in room temperature water overnight. 
Dried meats like Jerky. 
Single-serve cream cheese. 
PART 2 - Stuff that needs a microwave, and heat-friendly plates/bowls
Fuckin’ bring your own if you have to. Electric kettles are cheap and lightweight, and travel easy. Remember seasonings, like salt, pepper, garlic, oregano, soy sauce, etc. 
 Baked Potatoes. Microwave the shit out of potatoes, slap some butter and cheese and spices on it, and you’ve got a home-cooked meal right there. 
Squash - If you chop it up before you leave for the hotel, you can cover a bowl and nuke the hell out of it with water and eat with butter and whatever herbs/spices you like. 
Corn on the Cob - stuff it in a plastic bag with a bit of water, nuke it. Fast and easy.  
Pasta, Rice, Beans, Corn.
Microwave some canned SAUCE for your pasta, and get Alfredo sauce, Marinara, whatever you want. Get gormet up in this shit and make your own pasta sauce to bring in a tupperware. 
Hot dogs, Bacon, Cheesy nachos
Oatmeal - Isn’t this how most americans eat oatmeal anyway? Nuke it baybee.
Eggs - scrambled, poached, whatever. You can even throw some cheese, pre-chopped onions and green peppers in there for an omelette. 
You can even Microwave Chicken breast by putting it in microwave-safe tupperware with water halfway up the chicken, then covering it with the lid. Nuke it for 4-5 minutes per breast, then an extra minute at the end to be sure.  Use whatever seasonings you like.

“Should’ve expected it to be bigger in here than out there,” he says to himself. “Still kind of small though.”
“I do not receive visitors,” Nines replies as coldly as they can manage.
They have accidentally frozen people before, simply with the freezing burn of their anger, yet their magic lays calm and docile inside their chest.
“Good, I fucking hate people,” the man says.
Nines makes some sort of very undignified noise in the back of their throat at that. The man continues wandering about their space, finally sticking his entire head inside their cauldron.

“I wiped my feet, fuck off.”
Nines looks back toward the door. All three crystals glow a fading green as the wards slowly reset themselves.
They did not originally mean to bar all the villagers from visiting them forever. They simply wanted any guests to have basic manners. Knock on the door at the first floor before entering, close it behind them so leaves didn’t blow into the stairwell, and wipe their feet on the mat at the top.
Clearly, Nines had expected far too much of the general public.
Nines turns back to see the man filling their alchemy cauldron with water. Although they sterilize it thoroughly after each use in order to prevent cross-contamination among potions, they scrounge up enough hope past the exhaustion to ponder if maybe they had forgotten to do so in the haze of the last several days.
Unfortunately, the man’s flesh does not melt from his skin as he scrubs it out with a rag.
“What are you doing?” Nines asks.
“I’m hungry and you don’t have anything else to cook in,” the man says. “At least we’ll have leftov--”
“Get out of my tower!”
The man looks up and scowls at them. “You’re the one who kept fucking calling me, bitch. Make up your damn mind.”
The realization leaves them light-headed.
“I ... I didn’t ...”
The black spots creep back again, except now they can no longer accurately be called “spots.” They take up far too much of Nines’s vision for that, then consume it entirely.
Something warm and solid catches Nines before they fall. Their hands grab at whatever they can reach out of an instinctive need to hold onto something--fabric, skin, fur. Fur? Not quite. Hair, maybe. Very thick hair. Dwarf beard? No, only stubble. But very thick hair somewhere, somewhere, oh in the middle. His ... chest?
“Ow, quit pulling on that.”
“Furry,” Nines says, because they are very intelligent and also the greatest wizard of their generation.
“Yeah, moon’s close to full. Damn, you’re a gangly bitch, aren’t you? Where’s your fucking body fat, you need to eat more.”
Nines mumbles his very clever retort into his pillows. Oh, his pillows. They’re in bed. That’s nice. Their bed is soft and warm and good.
The other Warm Good thing wrapped around them lets go.
“Nooo.”
Nines pulls it back. Furrier now. They’d secretly wished for a dog. Obviously, a feline familiar would have been more practical, and certainly more in line with their introverted tendencies. Dogs need too much attention, and walks, and they drool and shed. Cats only do one of those things, and if they summoned a black one, the hair would just blend into their robes anyway.
But still. Some part of them had hoped ...
“All right, fine. Fucking bossy. Scoot over, bitch.”
The Warm Good thing piles into the bed with Nines, but there is still entirely too much skin. Nines does not go to bed with people. Certainly not with skin showing. They want--they need--
They want a dog.
They need a person.
Of course. A fully animal familiar could only do so much for them without thumbs, and monkeys are horrendous. Only a real person would be smart enough to take care of them the way they need it.
But a person-familiar ... unheard of. Impossible. No one had ever summoned a human before, and it would be grossly unethical regardless.
Nines crows with the proof that they really are the greatest wizard of their generation, and likely several before and after.
“OK, so you’re good with me being a werewolf, right? Because if you start crying about a monster and get a bunch of pitchforks up in here, I’m pissing on all your robes.”
A werewolf. Half man, half wolf. Brilliant!
“So. What’s your name?”
“Nines.”
“Fuck, humans are still doing that? Your litters are bigger than ours, goddamn. And popping them out one at a time like that?”
The werewolf shudders. Nines pets over them, much more fur than skin now.
“Was two of us,” they say, all filter gone with how tired they are. “Twins instead of just the last eighth. Connor, Connor was ... just ... a second quicker.”
“What, so they threw you away?” he asks, the question nearly a growl.
“Tech,,nicaaally,” Nines slurs. “They did him too. Gave him. Away. Just, pretended to love him first. It’s, s’crueler. I think. At least I, ahhhhh. I always knew.”
“Phckin’ hue-mens,” the werewolf growls.
“Mmhmm.”
“Miiine.”
That is the last word he can growl out before the transformation completes. Then Nines receives the dog they wanted. Like this, it is far easier to feel their familiar’s mind at the edge of their own, to recognize the bond for what it is.
Good boy, [name].
It’s Gavin, dickhead.

The wolf huffs. Go to sleep. I’ll feed you soup in the morning and maybe you won’t be so hangry.

He didn’t want to come at first. Didn’t understand what the ache in his head was in the first place, or why he kept feeling hungry no matter how much he ate or that he had to pee for four hours straight.
Just that he needed to go, go this way, this way, this way!
Fucking asshole wizard summoning him like he’s their goddamn dog.
(But it’s not like he has a pack of his own. Not like he has anything better to do. No one to protect or feed or cuddle.)
(And this human obviously needs his help.)
He’ll only stay for the moon, just so he has a safe place to sleep it off away from angry villagers convinced he’ll “deflower” their women--who already smell of sex by the way--even though he really prefers men.
And this one wizard, apparently.
Gavin licks Nines again. The human already smells way better with his scent on them, and this is the most luxurious bed he’s ever curled up in.
He can spend the night. Make some breakfast. He’s hungry, right? Wouldn’t make sense to leave a good meal behind.
Yeah, he’s just staying for the food.

You had stayed up way too late last night playing with everyone, and one look at Rose’s face as the two of you trudged through the lab said she was feeling the same way you were. Unfortunately, it was Friday, which meant the sample load would go one of two ways, and it did not look like the gods were smiling on you today. 
You were halfway through the day, and you’d already managed to knock your 10,000 step goal out of the park. Running back and forth between the A and R buildings was not your cup of tea, but there were timed samples, and you didn’t trust the couriers. So what else were you gonna do? 
The walk from your lab to the in-patient unit where your samples were waiting was nearly half a mile, and the added five flights of stairs had you out of breath by the fourth sample retrieval. 
“Here.” You nearly jumped out of your shoes as a water bottle came flying at you from across the hallway. “Take it, I’d prefer if you didn’t topple from dehydration the next time you make your rounds.”
“Thanks, Dr. Tokugawa!” You called behind you, waving as you continued your walk back to the lab. You must really look disheveled if he was throwing water bottles at you. 
“I told you I would fill up your water.” Rose scowled at you placing your own, now full, bottle down by your computer. “You didn’t have to buy one.”
“I didn’t.” You paused in gulping the rest of the water down. “Dr. Tokugawa threw it at me.”
“Dr. Tokugawa?” Rose quirked an eyebrow at you. “As in, cute, single, just got hired on as a resident Dr. Tokugawa?”
“The very same.” You snickered, chucking the empty bottle into the recycling bin before picking up your reusable one. 
“Lucky, I wish a man like that would throw water at me.” She complained openly as she plopped down in her seat. “Instead, I’ve just got Yuki throwing lettuce.”
“Could be worse, he could be throwing something that stains.” You shrugged, sitting in your seat and checking your email while you waited for the samples in the centrifuge to stop spinning. 
“Valid. So, how’d you do it?” Rose asked, rolling her chair closer to yours.
“Do what?” You answered her question with a question.
“Get him to acknowledge your presence!” She all but screamed, earning a dirty stare from a few of your lab mates.
“I’ve honestly got no idea what you’re talking about. I just looked rugged as hell and out of breath running back and forth between here and the unit.” You shrugged. “He probably didn’t want me dying when he was on service.”
“Fair. That would be a hassle.” Rose spun in her chair, turning her attention to the analysis program that had finally loaded on her computer. 
“Exactly.” You cracked a smile. “If I die, they’d have to use the courier, and we all know how much the floor wants to do that.”
“We would literally never see another sample on time.” Rose burst into laughter before the office fell quiet, and your timer went off. I guess it was back to work. 
Fortunately, the packed day meant it went by quickly. With a deep sigh, you stood at the crosswalk waiting for the light to change and enjoying the breeze. You weren’t sure what you wanted to do when you got home, but sleep and buffalo chicken came to mind, so that’s where you were going to start. 
Happily wrapped in an afghan, buffalo chicken plated with a loaded baked potato and celery, you curled up in the corner of your couch and watched reruns of the Halloween baking challenge wishing you were that creative with your desserts. You burned your fingers just thinking about pulling sugar like some of these people. 
With your show ending, the dishes done, and your tummy too full to even think about trying to sleep, you reached for your controller and logged yourself into Endless Isle, hoping to find something quick to distract yourself before bed. 
The server wasn’t too busy, and the market was clearly more empty than usual. Without any new quests dropping through the channel, the only people you really saw wandering around were single players or people focusing on the story mode aspect of the game. Maybe you’d give that a shot tonight since it didn’t seem like any of your team was online. You were still really curious about what the opening cutscene was about after all. 
Nearly four hours had passed, and you were almost two months into the game's timeline. This was so enthralling. You showed your CPU team around one of the more straightforward battle maps trying to grind out the playable characters to match your own, exponentially higher, level. The last thing you wanted to do was to get into a paralogue that required a unit which was terribly under-leveled, defensive tactics were fun but not that fun. Dying in a side story specifically set up for rare items didn’t sound like a good way to go out. 
That’s what started your single-player spree, anytime your team was unable to participate in battles meant you had the day to yourself to hammer out a good portion of the story. Now fully invested in the fantasy arc, you awaited the highly anticipated mid-game climax and the crazy looking completion badge and weapon you got at the end of the story. 
It was nearly three weeks later, after another long day at work that you came home to get some of the story arc finished. You weren’t doing anything too important when you started to feel yourself drift.  Finishing the in-game cooking challenge you had started you head towards a save point to back yourself to the main menu when you saw an advertisement for the single-player battle arena happening at the end of the month. Prize $500. Sold. Without a second thought, you threw your hat in the ring and entered the tournament. Now it was really time to grind.

The first thing I want to say is that there is almost no way to get this one wrong. My Aunt Lauri came up with the basis for this one. She works 2 jobs and has 3 kids, so her version is quick, easy, and delicious.
QUICKEST VERSION
Lauri's Original Chicken Noodle Soup Serves: 14 cups
Ingredients
1 whole rotisseried or fresh baked chicken 2 Knorr vegetable soup mix packets 2 chicken bullion cubes, powdered 10 cups water 1 8-oz bag wide egg noodles 1 tsp white pepper powder 1 tbs McCormick Perfect Pinch Chicken Seasoning 1 tsp garlic powder 1/4 cup dehydrated minced onion
Instructions
1. Skin and bone chicken, discard carcass and skin, then cube the meat. 2. Put all other soup ingredients into a large soup pot. 3. Cook until noodles are done, about 20 minutes, covered.
RICHER FLAVORED VERSION
Nanny's Variation on Lauri's Recipe Serves: 7 cups, richer flavor
Nanny tinkered with it to find our favorite version of this one, but I'll mention later a few of the other ways we did it that went over well with the family. We NEVER throw out the chicken carcass and skin, use the carcass and skin to make the broth.
Ingredients
1 whole rotisseried or fresh baked chicken 1 Knorr Spring Vegetable soup mix (optional) 7 cups water 4 oz medium egg noodles 1/2 tsp pepper 2 tsp chicken seasoning 1 tsp garlic powder 1/8 cup dehydrated minced onion
Instructions
1.   A) Nanny will purchase a fresh, very dark rotisseried chicken from the supermarket. She likes Lemon Pepper.     B) I bake a whole chicken, skin on. Rub it town with butter, sprinkle it liberally with   salt and pepper. Bake covered with aluminum foil for 90 minutes, basting every 20 minutes. Uncover for the last 30 minutes to crisp skin.
{{We use the breast meat for dinner that day and use the rest for soup the next day.}}
2. Remove all usable meat from bones, cube, set aside. 3. Place the bones, fat, and skin in 7 cups water. Cover and slow cook for 45 minutes. 4. Remove the bones, fat, and skin. Strain all the broth back into the pot. There should be 5-6 cups remaining. 5. Combine all other ingredients for soup, except cubed chicken meat. Cover and cook soup 20 minutes on medium heat. 6. Turn to low, then add the chicken meat. The chicken is cooked already, so it only needs to be left in the soup 2-3 minutes to warm through. Serve hot.
Side Notes:
Leftovers from both recipes will change consistency in your refrigerator. The noodles will continue to absorb soup liquid, so the soup becomes thicker, like a stew, over time.
Try the soup with both methods, they taste very different.
If you purchase a rotisseried chicken, the seasonings used by the supermarket will change the soup. Experiment.
Remember white pepper is much hotter than black pepper. Season to taste, but taste as you go. You can always add more, but you can never remove it once in.
Once, I forgot to put the Knorr Vegetable Soup mix into the homemade broth version of the recipe. It was excellent, just different.
Once Nanny didn't have all the ingredients. She could not find her regular chicken seasoning, so she used McCormick Perfect Pinch Rotisserie Chicken seasoning, like Lauri recommended. She thought it was spicier than she liked, but some people preferred that.
Remember how I said "that there is almost no way to get this one wrong"? This one is our kitchen sink variety.  We had leftover red sauce, so we added 1/2 cup to the basic soup. We also threw in some boiled veggies. It was wonderful, just different.
Experiment with this one! If you like celery, throw some in! If carrots are your jam, they'll sweeten up the pot. Go wild!!
