hi can i request girl dad!aaron 🥺🥺 i am such a sucker for him, anything would be amazing thank you so much <3
hope this is okay!! —you have big news for your small family. 1.5k pregnant!mom!reader
When you first married his father, you weren't expecting Jack Hotchner to like you very much. Losing his mom so young, you wouldn't have blamed him for resenting you, or even hating you. You were like a stranger in his home.
Things are different now. Jack lays in your lap with his head on your shoulder, and maybe he's a little too old for such a coddling cuddle, but who really cares? You love him and you love holding him, and if he wants some extra comfort tonight you're happy to give it. Plus, you have something you've been meaning to tell him.
“He doesn't have real headlights, did you know?” Jack asks. “They're just stickers.”
You raise your brows at the car on screen. “No kidding.” You brush your fingers through his hair. He's blonde like his mom, though that blonde has turned brown the older he gets.
“Race cars don't have headlights.”
“They don't need them,” you say. Jack smiles at you shyly and leans into your neck, clearly pleased.
You're very, very glad that you ended up being someone he loved. It's a privilege to get to look after him, and to be his step mom. In the same way you're lucky to be Aaron's partner and Jane's mom, too.
“Think dad's made dinner?” you ask.
“No, he's probably just talking to your sister.”
Yes, well. You can't blame him, nor would you want him to stop. He talks to Jane like she understands, and Jane, not even two years old, nearly brand new to the world, soaks him in. You can hear him if you strain, the dulcet cadence of his voice under the steady hum of the dishwasher.
“That's okay, sweetheart, don't get upset,” he's saying, “it's okay. Come here, I've got you.”
Jane starts to cry. You and Jack give one another the look, apprehensive in hoping it won't turn into a full blown melt down.
“Honey?” Aaron calls. “Sorry, where did you put her other pacifier?”
You kiss Jack's hair. “Sorry, bub. Wanna come with me?”
Jack wants to stay and watch Cars. You wrap him in a throw blanket and make your way into the Hotchner kitchen, where Aaron rifles through the drawers and cabinets with Jane held snugly to his chest. “I know,” he says, “I know. I'll get it.”
You nudge him aside. You only know where the spare pacifier is because you put away the wooden spoons last night and pushed it back. You fish for it, a ladybug made of glittery red plastic, and Jane's crying slows as soon as you pull it free. She grizzles while you rinse it, but she settles when you hand it over.
“This is not the best, is it? The pacifiers?” you murmur.
“She dropped her other one and it rolled under the oven. And no. Not ideal.” He pats her back gently. “As long as she stops before she gets her big teeth, she'll be okay.”
“Do you think it's a comfort issue?” you ask.
“No,” he says. You worry about stuff like this constantly, but he knows kids are more hardy, and he isn't worried. “Sorry for making you get up.”
He hates when she cries; he may see his kids as a hardy bunch, but he takes their upset as a personal failure half the time. His concern for her overrides his concern for you, but in a few weeks that might change. You can't imagine him calling you to find something again when your stomach is round as a honeydew.
You've been meaning to tell him about that, too.
You're not secret-keeping immorally, he does want another baby, but you've been having a little bit of fun. He's gone on cases so often lately that he hasn't been able to keep track of you, or your doctor's appointments.
You watch him with Jane, and you think about him with Jack, and you know he's going to be happy. He's told you as much before.
“My poor girl,” he says, covering the back of Jane's head with his hand and pulling her under his chin. He looks as fine as ever, tall, dark and handsome to a fault. Jane's lips smack as she sucks and digs her teary cheek into his chest.
You can feel his gaze on you. “Is now a good time?” he asks.
You shrug. “For what?”
“To tell me what you're not telling me.”
“Oh, busted,” you croon, aiming for his shoulder.
You do as Jane had and press your cheek to his front, your eye forced shut.
“What do you think it is?” you ask.
He makes a strange noise. You can practically hear the possibilities for your secret running through his head. His birthday is vaguely soon, so that's what he'll settle on first. But Aaron likes to disregard the obvious as most people do, only circling back to it when there's no other lead to follow.
“How big of a secret is it?” he asks, rubbing Jane's back diligently. She makes a happy sound, and for a moment he forgets his plight to kiss the top of her head.
You speak quietly, carefully, because it is big, huge news. “The pamphlets say it’s about the size of a strawberry.”
He puts his cheek to Jane's head softly, looking at you in confusion. A second, another, and his eyebrows start to relax, rise, a smile on his lips like it's too good to be true. “You are?” he asks in surprise.
Jack appears in the doorway with the throw blanket trailing behind him. “Y/N, when are you coming back to watch TV?”
“Jack, lovely, come here. I have something to tell you,” you say.
Aaron grabs your wrist. When you meet his eyes, he squeezes gently. “You're sure?” he asks.
“The doctor seemed pretty certain, handsome.” You lower your voice as Jack comes to stand in front of you. “Are you happy?”
“Happy about what?”
You put your hand on your stomach cautiously, worried about Aaron and how quiet he's being, and if it's as okay to tell Jack as you'd thought, but that action is what gets him. “I love you,” he says quizzically, as though his being happy is totally dependent on the fact. “Of course I'm happy. This is the best secret you could've kept.”
“About what?” Jack asks, patting your arm.
You bend down just a bit to see his face properly. “It's a secret you can't tell anyone for a while, okay? The only people who can know for now are me, you, and dad.”
“Can I tell Jane?” he asks.
“Yeah, buddy, you can tell your sister,” Aaron says.
You peer at him from the corner of your eye, both concerned and pleased to see the wetness ringing his waterline, and the tenderness with which he holds Jane close, his thumb rubbing little circles into her back.
“I'm going to have another baby,” you say.
Jack's jaw drops. “Right now?”
“No, not right now! You still remember last time?” you ask with a laugh, taking his shoulders into your hands.
“You were crying and shouting for dad to hold your hand.” He pokes your stomach. “So it's like Jane?”
“Maybe one day, sweetheart. For now, it's just a tiny baby.”
Jack wants to see your stomach. He's expecting a much bigger bump than you have to offer, but you explain that eventually it'll get bigger again, and he seems quite pleased. Aaron makes sure to give him a hug and ask him if he's okay, to which Jack says, “Yes, but can we have a brother this time?”
You rub the soft top of your stomach. “I'll see what I can do, Jack.”
Aaron commandeers your attention, kissing you more times than you can count. You don't think you've ever seen him this happy now the reality has truly set in, asking Jane in his murmur, “Do you want to be a big sister?”
She gurgles around the pacifier, leaving drool in a line down his chest.
“I know, honey. I'm excited too. Let's clean you up, mm? And make mommy a cup of hot cocoa…” He narrows his eyes at you. “Would you sit down?”
“I'm only ten weeks, I'm fine.”
“She's keeping secrets from me, and now she won't do what I'm asking,” he says to Jane. “Can you believe it? Anyone would think mommy doesn't like me as much as she claims.”
You kiss his cheek. “M'having your baby, Aaron, again.”
“That is a compelling argument.” He wipes Jane's cheek. “What do you think? Should we forgive her?” Jane laughs. He smiles at you, lovesick. You're not sure who for. “I guess we're letting you get away with this one, sweetheart. But no more secrets.”
“None,” you promise.

Can you do more Levi and chunky baby.
Of course!!! ☺️ Okay so this kind of got away from me. I had trouble figuring out how to end it so if the ending seems abrupt I apologize 😅
🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣🐣
“This little sucker’s got some weight on them.” Hange teases with a smile as she pokes the baby’s cheek.
“Sounds like you’re just weak.” Levi retorts. “Give me my child.”
Hange rolls their eyes at him. “I never said it was a bad thing, Levi.”
Levi stares at Hange for a few seconds before he relents.
“Your dad’s so easy to anger.” Hange speaks in a childlike voice to the baby. “Good luck, kid.”
“Certain people are quick to anger me.” Levi corrects them as he throws a glare their way.
Hange’s eyes light up when you walk into the room. “Ah, y/n, could you please tell your husband to lighten up?” They request as they walk over to you, your baby babbling on their hip.
You quickly look at Levi who rolls his eyes and you shake your head with a chuckle. “What did you do this time, Hange?”
“I just said your baby’s got some nice weight on them.” Hange says with a smile before looking back at the baby. “Don’t cha, ya little plum.”
You sigh with a smile, knowing your baby’s weight is a touchy subject for Levi. “I’m sure you didn’t mean in a bad way.”
Hange looks back at your husband as if to say ‘See, Levi?’
“However, you should be careful about what you say around him. I won’t be liable for any injuries.” You tell Hange with a smirk as they pass you the child.
“You gotta tell your auncle to be careful with their words or daddy will hurt them.” You take them into your arms, kissing them on the cheek, emitting a happy babble from them. “Isn’t that right?”
“Yeah, yeah, I got it.” Hange says mockingly, making you giggle, before they walk out of the room.
You walk over to Levi whose eyes soften as you get closer. “Hi.” You greet him softly before you give him a quick kiss on the cheek.
“Hey.” Levi sighs as he gently pulls you in by the waist for another kiss, minding the baby. “And hello to you too.” He gives them a gentle kiss on their forehead.
“I was thinking of taking a shower. Do you mind?” You ask him.
“Of course not, give ‘em here.”
After you leave the room, Levi puts down a clean baby blanket on the floor before he sets a colorful inflatable water mat right in front of it.
“Alright kid, it’s tummy time.” He places the baby down on their stomach with their upper half directly on top of the mat.
He watches as the baby becomes fixated on the squishy fish and ducks floating around in the mat. Their chubby hands try to grab at the fish while they try to hold themselves up. “There you go.” Levi says under his breath. The baby doesn’t typically like tummy time so you and Levi tried to think of different ideas to make it more stimulating for them. This inflatable mat is what you two decided on.
They seemed to be entertained for a few minutes before he sees their little body slowly roll themselves over so that they’re on their side. “Where do you think you’re going, hm?” Levi gently grabs the one chubby hand in the air and brings it back down so that they’re upright on their stomach again. The same thing happens a few more times. “Now you’re just being a little shit, huh.” He watches as the baby rolls over for the last time on their back. “Wonder where you got your stubbornness from.” He mutters to himself as he picks up the little chunk. The baby babbles and taps his cheeks with their little hands. “I’m sure that was fun for you, wasn’t it?” He asks them, earning a babble from them as a response. “Yeah, I bet…”
Levi grabs one of the baby snacks on the dresser before sitting down on the rocking chair you begged him to get, baby on his lap. “What am I gonna do with you?” He shakes his head as he opens the bag and feeds the baby a snack. “Should we just leave you somewhere?” Levi asks thoughtfully. As the baby chews on the snack, they look up at their father, their big sliver eyes mirroring his. The way they’re looking up makes it seem like they understood what Levi said. “No you don’t like that idea?” The baby continues to stare at him, making Levi let out a chuckle before he feeds them another snack. “Love you bud.”

I am a SUCKER for popular x social outcast ships. Can I have some HCs abt Qiu and a MC that doesn't interact with many people outside of their friendgroup?
Anon your mind!!! My mc Aaliyah has one of those dynamics with Qiu for various reasons throughout the steps so I might incorporate that part of their dynamic in here!
Tumblr media
Genuinely I do think Qiu's popularity can have both positive and negative impacts on their relationship with the MC, especially if said MC is a outcast
On one hand, Qiu is able to spread the good word about the MC like it's no one's business; especially in step 1 and 3 in particular. Since their the big fish in the youth of Golden Grove, they can make sure that the MC at least has a chance to develop more friendships with others
Step 2 is different because Qiu is out for themself, and I think this is vital for this relationship because of the fact that because Qiu doesn't have a lot of friends here, that means they mostly focus on nourishing the relationships that Matter
However... on the other hand, there's probably a partial chance that Qiu's popularity fed into the MC being a social outcast, especially if their going out of their way to show everyone that the MC is their favorite
It doesn't mean that their the reason the MC is a social outcast, but especially during highschool, kids can be mean and petty because of their own insecurities and the MC being the apple of the most popular kid in school's eyes has probably gotten them shunned from a few friend groups
None of this matters to Qiu though, they're not going to pretend they don't like the MC for the sake of appeasing their fans. Especially in step 2 and 3, the MC is an important part of them and they can't imagine life without them in it
So essentially, Qiu is very much like "This is my favorite person in the whole world and I love them dearly. If you don't like them for superficial reasons, politely I want nothing to do with you." Their always going to choose the MC over everyone else and if people can't accept that for something as superficial as the mc not being as popular as them, then those people have no place near Qiu

Their favorite animals, and why?
Hal isn't a big animal person, he doesn’t like how messy and unpredictable they can be. he would probably like some sort of pet that is more for looking at than interacting with, like a fish. He would also like going to the zoo or any place where he can see/learn about animals without interacting with them.
AM likes monkeys and apes because he thinks they're funny and they are the closest to humans but without the potential evilness of humans. He also has a weakness for funny/dumb cat videos.
Auto isn't really an animal person either, like Hal he thinks they are too messy and unpredictable. So I guess his favorite animal is technically humans, since he kinda sees them as his pets...
WOPR likes dogs because of their energy and playfulness, and because playing with a dog makes him feel like a regular guy, not having to think about his important military duties all the time. He would probably beg Dr. Falken for a puppy until he finally gives in. :P
Wheatley only has experience with lab animals like mice and rabbits, so he learned to take care of them pretty well. He's a sucker for anything small and cute, so he loves rodents.

It's my first ever year of participating in mermay and the scrunklies were orbiting my brain so I had to make them aquatic.
Design notes below the cut :]
(rbs very appreciated <3)
So I chose some specific fish to merma-fy the boys into. For Yellow, a Royal angelfish
I made his markings look like his overalls because it felt odd leaving his body mostly yellow, and turned his hair into some fins!
I wanted to keep his palette contained to his regular palette, so I didn't add any black or indigo so it's not exactly a royal angelfish, but I am still happy with the results!
Tumblr media
For Red, I just had to go for something tentacled, so I went with the Australian giant cuttlefish
I've always been a big sucker for cuttlefish and their highly interesting abilities, and as a gay fuck for Red fan of Red, I wanted to make him one. I was gonna go for not only an octopus, but also a more Ursula look. I opted out, though, as I realized I could give one uniform tail if I turned the cuttlefish's body(?) into a tail!
They aren't suckers, but I put little rough spots on his tentacles just to show some variation. I also snuck in some top surgery scars hehe.
Tumblr media
And for Duck, while the idea of an emerald green cory catfish crossed my mind, I thought it was far too silly to not go with the Green humphead parrotfish!
Honestly I didn't do too much. Mostly turned his feathers into little fins and taking his coat color into a gradient on his tail. It's mostly just plain ol' Duck!!
Tumblr media
I might do another one of these for Roy and Lesley because I got the idea of angler Roy but idk, I have a few other mermay schemes >:3c

methinks pirates au with spiderbit (and perhaps queerplatonic 4halo)😈
No... Don't do this to me... Don't tempt me for a pirate au...
Anyone that's ever had the misfortune /lh of listening to my endless ramblings about aus is very well aware that I consider a pirate au to be a STAPLE and a NEED for every single fandom.
I think I saw an uhhh. I saw a mer!Roier fanart somewhere some time ago? I don't remember by who, I'll try to find it and link it in the reblogs and I haven't stopped thinking about it since... Especially if you also throw in pirate Cellbit...
Methinks... The Brazilians should all be apart of the pirate crew :) I am flip flopping between whether they should accidentally fish Roier out of the water or whether to maybe make it so mermaids/sirens/whatever are hunted or something and they went after him for the bounty at first before Feelings™ happened.
I was a big philever enjoyer and I think he should be at least slightly obsessed with him always but then again I'm proud of Forever for deciding he's a Strong Independent Man that needs No Man and turning BBH who is... Some sorta demon I presume again. (he should have a trident I reckon it'd be cool)
But overall I'm just a sucker for QPRs (adamant believer that Jaiden and Roier are qpps) so yes I absolutely am on board with that.

Oh...oh I have so many feelings.
So, I just finished binging the One Piece Live Action.  And as someone who has never seen a single episode of the One Piece anime nor has read a single page of the One Piece manga...I really really really loved this live action.
First of all, I love the story.  I think it’s really well done and the plotting works for the adaptation.  Second of all, I love the characters (and I will do a whole section on them in a minute) and I love the cast.  My god the cast.  They each played their roles so fucking well and I’m glad they chose who they did because I really can’t see anyone else playing these characters.  Also, the backstories man.  Look, I am a sucker for backstories and they delivered on them.  And also, also, the fucking flag at the end?!  The icon flag with the skull with straw hat on it?  Bitch, I am emotions
ANNND DON’T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON THE RELATIONSHIPS THROUGHOUT THIS SHOW…the relationships make me emotional
Now, for the characters (at least the mains and maybe like the villains):
Mains:
Luffy: I love how he was portrayed in this.  I’ve seen gifsets of this guy and he is both so loveable but also a gremlin and a little shit and Iñaki played him so well.  I couldn’t stop cooing over how fucking cute he was.  My god.  I think the CGI for his rubber was actually quite cool/good.  Really unnatural looking but hello...the dude’s skin is fucking rubber, it’s gonna be unnatural.  And it worked
Zoro: He was badass and a cunt and a bitch and I love him.  The middle finger in the first episode?  A man after my own fucking heart.  I also really liked Mackenyu in the Fullmetal Alchemist series as Scar, I thought he played him really well.  I think he did a really good job (and I’m excited to see him in Knights of the Zodiac whenever that comes out)
Nami: Her actress reminded me a lot of like a younger Jennifer Chastain (it might be the orange hair) but I really liked her character.  A badass but with a good heart and also a little bit of a bitch.  (If a character is a little bit of a bitch, I’m going to like them, that’s just how it is).
Sanji: I loved his actor.  And I know him and Zoro a little bit better than the other characters and I know that in the anime he’s quite a ladies man.  Like a lot of a ladies man but I like that they kind of toned that down here.  He’s also another bitch and I love him.  I’m also very glad they kept his eyebrows normal and didn’t do the spiral because I don’t think that would have translated well
Usopp: He has a lot of heart.  I really liked how he cared for Kaya and how he cared for his friends and yeah he was a bit of an exaggerated, he’s really just trying to make people smile.  But damn if that little fireball thing that he made wasn’t fucking cool as hell as it exploded that fish guy.  Like get fucked
Garp: I liked his actor.  I don’t know much about the character himself but I liked his actor and I thought he was pretty cool for a Vice-Admiral.  But I have to ask the fans...what is up with the dog hat?
Koby: Apparently according to fans he’s not that big in the anime/manga but I liked him here.  I thought he was cute, in a bright-eyed, bushy tailed kind of way.  A good kid.  And I’m glad he and Luffy became friends
Villains:
Alvida: Oh, she was cool.  Her and her big ass spiked clubs?  Fuck yeah, my dudes.  That was fucking cool
Buggy: Loved the actor, hate the character.  Buggy is just creepy as shit.  But I also hate clowns so there’s that.  But the actor really did bring something to this guy where like...you definitely got that there was something off about him but he wasn’t overbearing.  The CGI for him was *shudders* but also really cool
Arlong: Oh my god, I hated the character but the actor’s voice????  Hello???  I could listen to that man speak all day, holy shit, I could not get over his voice.  His character though, was a dick and I’m glad he got his pagoda fucking smashed on his fucking head, he deserved it after what he did to Nami and what he fucking put her through.
Now, will this live action make me want to read the manga or watch the anime?  No.  But did I enjoy the fuck out of it?  Yeah, yeah I fucking did.  I haven’t screeched with laughter in god knows how long and it was really good to watch/binge and while I may not understand a lot of the background or the plot, I still really enjoyed it and could follow along pretty well.
But also, for the fans because I am genuinely curious...does Luffy ever find the One Piece?

Time for,
Octopi and squids!
So, let’s talk about the differences in squids and octopi.
So, octopi have eight, sucker covered tentacles. Their head is also a bit rounder and they’re smaller than squids. (The largest octopi are around 16 feet)
Squids have 10 tentacles in total. Their head is also a more triangular shape. Squids can also get really big. The largest squids getting up to 60 feet.
Tumblr media
Fun fact, octopus and squid don’t taste the same. I’m sure we’ve all eaten squid because calamari is made from them. But octopi don’t taste like squid at all. They have a more subtitle flavour and it’s more comparable to pork or chicken.
Here is one thing that confuses me. Squidward. What do we think he is? A squid, right? I mean, his name says Squid so- he’s an octopus.
(To be very honest, it doesn’t really surprise me. That’s because in my country his name is Octo. But still, why call an octopus squidward?)
Now, I wonder how squids and octopi eat.
Well, they both have a bit of a different tactic. Octopi have venom, right (yes I just found this out and am very disappointed that the people I’m with already knew and brushed me off). Well, they use this venom to paralyse their prey. First they grab it with their tentacles and then bite it and inject the venom. Some squids also have venom.
Squids grab their prey with their tentacles and just start eating. Squids mainly eat fish and crustaceans and will sometimes resort to cannibalism. This mostly happens when they get caught in fishnets. In the first half of their lifecycle they can increase with 10 to 15% their bio mass per day.
Fun fact, you can tell the sex of an octopus by it’s tentacles. Also, octopi have multiple hearts.
After octopi mate, both of the parents die. The male octopus has to wriggle itself free from the female. Sometimes when a male approaches a female to mate, the female octopus will resort to cannibalism. Female octopi also die. They lay the eggs and stop eating. Or they’ll eat their own tentacles. Another good reason to not get kids.
Squids and octopi both have beaks as well. And not duck like beaks. No i mean full on ‘im going to rip off your finger if you touch me’ beaks.

Yea, no thanks.
And thats all. Have a lovely day!

Talking to Craig McCracken
If you had a chance to talk to Craig McCracken, what would you say to him that not only complements him on the work he’s done in the past 30+ years, but also reassures him that there’s still interest in the plans he made for S3?
As someone who grew up watching Cartoon Network in the ‘90s, I would tell him…
“Hi, Craig-o, pleased to meet you! I’ve known your work since the early-mid nineties. I believe you were involved in 2 Stupid Dogs and Dexter’s Laboratory. It must have been a real treat getting to know some history behind Hanna-Barbera. I know it was for me. When I first saw a piece of your own work, it was on the side of a box of Fruity Pebbles promoting World Premiere Toons - one of the characters was Bubbles of the PPG. I gotta say, you’ve been one of my inspirations growing up.”
When it gets to the point where I talk about WOY, I would say this to him…
“I remember when I got into Wander Over Yonder. When I first saw your early sketches of him, I thought of Cantus the Minstrel from Fraggle Rock. And what can I say? I’m a sucker for anything related to Muppets. How about Jack McBrayer? He’s the perfect choice for the character’s voice! WOY marks the first time I got to hear Jack sing. It’s the show that provided the springboard for shows Disney apparently loves best, specifically Star vs. the Forces of Evil and Big City Greens - those shows wouldn’t have been picked up if it wasn’t for Daron Nefcy and the Houghton Bros.’ involvement in the first season. It’s also the first show where Andy Bean provided music for a TV series and where people like Noël Wells got to try their hand at voice acting. The show has made a lot more history than you can possibly imagine, so please don’t take it too lightly.”
Now comes the part where I talk about the elephant in the room, or rather, the ape in the space capsule…
“To be honest, I really looked forward to watching episodes of the show during its run. When I looked at your announcement about the premature cancellation and the plans you’d made for that third and final season, I was totally perplexed. Disney let Fish Hooks go on for three seasons regardless of content - was that because no one turned deaf ears or blind eyes to it? I always assumed they’d treat WOY the same way they treated FH.”
“Somehow it just doesn’t feel right to let your show bite the dust just because the “higher up bosses of bosses of bosses” didn’t see the need to make more, especially not after you made most fans aware of the existence of the plans for S3 and led them to believe it was guaranteed to be amazing. Why do you think I haven’t given up on WOY? And why else would I have Kid encourage viewers to watch the show (Kid Cosmic was great, by the way, one that definitely ended in victory)? I cannot think of any other show that was canceled one week before S2’s premiere, seven months after the S1 finale, five months after writing on S2 wrapped up, five months after your pitch for S3. You, Craig, are one of the most experienced cartoonists in the business and you don’t deserve to be treated like this.”
“To let you know just how determined I am to right this wrong, I worked four months on an Illustrator piece featuring over 140 individuals, built a LEGO Star Nomad (when I showed it to Dave Thomas (@owner-of-wendys), he said, “Dude… that Star Nomad is incredible. Well done!”), and wrote a pre-S3 shorts idea where Andy the Watchdog interviews refugees on the ex-secret planet. Heck, I even had to figure out what Star Force Enforcement Force look like and how the plot of S3 might play out.”
“@peepsqueak started the SaveWOY campaign, and I’m seeing to it that it shan’t be in vain. I know you’re busy with your other projects, but there is still a show waiting to be completed on your own terms. Until the time comes, keep making people smile! Darkest times call for sunniest of smiles!”

A measured critique of Love Death + Robots
Tumblr media
Okay, let me talk about something I kinda wanted to talk about for quite a while: The Netflix anthology series Love Death + Robots. A show with which I very much have a love-hate relationship.
Because I absolutely love the concept. The idea of turning short stories (a piece of literary media that often gets ignored) into short films (that also tend to get ignored)? Genius! It gives a chance for some authors to shine, that normally do not get that much attention. Same for smaller animation studios/teams. It really is a super cool idea.
And I gotta say, that there were some short films in there, that I really loved. My favorites are:
Three Robots (Just LOVED the humor in both stories)
Sonnie's Edge (I loved the Cyberpunk-Monster mix)
When the Yoghurt Took Over (Again, something that hit my humor nerve right)
Good Hunting (Ken Liu still is among my favorite authors)
Fish Night (Pretty)
Zima Blue (The Artstyle was just super cool)
The Tall Grass (I liked the atmosphere)
Snow in the Desert (I really liked the aesthetic in this one)
The Very Pulse of the Machine ( I mostly liked the main character)
All Through the House (Once more: My type of humor)
Mason's Rats (Because Rats)
You will notice one thing: Most of these are from season 1. Though to be fair: Season 1 had 18 episodes, while seasons 2 and 3 put together only had 17. So generally... Well, there is a few issues I had with season 1. Issues that not only I had. And seasons 2 and 3 did not improve on either.
The one critique you have probably heard quite a few times: A lot of those stories really love to objectify and/or sexualize the female characters. There is a ton of unnecessary sexualization of female characters going on. At times sexualization in a way that is not even precedented by the short stories the movies are based on.
At times this goes as far as some of those short films fetishizing violence against women. Jibaro was the worst example of this, but it is something that happens in quite a few of the short films. And that just leaves a really bitter aftertaste after watching the stories.
Again, I am not the first person to criticize this aspect.
Meanwhile the other criticism I have is one that I barely have seen anyone bring up, even though it is very much connected to that first one: Almost all of the short stories that the short films are based on have been written by men. Of the first season there are two movies based on stories written by women (Sucker of Souls and Helping Hand). Of seasons two and three, not a single short film was based on a story written by a woman. Or to put it differently: Out of the 35 episodes, 33 have been written by men. And, while we are on it, mostly white men.
And... Look, fantasy/scifi already has a big issue when it comes to major novel publishing that often female, queer and non-white authors are overlooked outside of the YA genre. Still, when it comes to the short story magazines, like @uncannymagazine female and otherwise marginalized writers get more of a voice. The same is also true for a lot of anthologies, that are not dependent on "oh, we just will publish a couple of short stories by already known authors". So... Why the hell does Netflix not give those writers a chance to shine in this anthology series?
Like, fuck... This annoys the living hell out of me. Just allow other people some time to shine as well.

Pearl of the East China Sea
Here we have the brightest boy in Jinling City - Zhang Zhehan as the young Lin Shu from Nirvana in Fire.
The inspiration for this fig is pulled from several different places in the show, but the primary inspiration was brief flashback scene near the end of Episode 40. It's been cut out on the version on YouTube, but it is watchable on Viki, starting at 39:00 in the episode. I can't download it from Viki, but I do have a small clip I downloaded from somewhere years ago that plays out this scene:
Apologies for the lack of attribution, I am not sure who originally posted this.
I took a couple screenshots in better definition so you can see more of the detail:

I hate to admit this, but I have not watched Nirvana in Fire yet despite it's epic reputation. BUT I'm hoping to start next week! I have a long flight ahead of me and plenty of time to get started on it's 54 episodes.
I loved this clip when I saw it because of how delightful it was - the young Lin Shu is adorable, with a smile that can really can light up the city.
Tumblr media
He arrived safely tucked into his polystyrene box. The little cutout to the right side of him didn't have anything in it. My guess is that it was originally for his lantern, but (very thankfully) it came pre-installed. We won't need to have me sweating over trying to carefully slide it into his little hand.
Tumblr media
The pearl is definitely as big as a chicken egg!
Tumblr media
The (fish? frog? tadpole?) lantern in his hand is SUPER cute. It's also from the show as well, since I recall seeing a clip of him carrying it, but unfortunately I don't have a shot of it. When I watch the show I will keep an eye out for it, and come back and update this.
This is also a good angle to see the beauty mark on his left ear. This fig maker always adds the beauty marks to Zhehan and Gong Jun's ears.
Tumblr media
The lantern is really too cute. Look at the little feet! I'm a complete sucker for those claymation animals with the googly eyes, and this totally reminded me of it. I'm so, so grateful that this didn't arrive broken and once again that I didn't have to wrangle glue on it to stick it into his hand.
Tumblr media
The scales on the lantern! Such great detail.
Tumblr media
I love figs with cloaks. Here you can see the little bit of detailing for the fur trim.
Tumblr media
As you can tell by the fig stand, this little guy did not stand up on his own. You might think the weight of that enormous pearl might drag him forward, but no, the weight of his head kept tipping him back. I glued him down right away - no chance of this little cutie falling and breaking something!
Tumblr media
He's not in his full armor here like he was in the clip, he's wearing clothes that Lin Shu wears elsewhere. I think it was a good call by the fig maker to have the clothes be recognizable enough without being overpowering. It really allows the pearl and the lantern to take center stage.
Tumblr media
I love this fig, I think he's just so cute.
Tumblr media
The fig maker really captured the youthful roundness of his face, and rendered his hair perfectly. The detail on the fur trim on his cloak is subtle but very nice. Just a great execution all the way around.
Tumblr media
He's wearing black pants tucked into his black boots, but it's a little difficult to see due to the color.
Tumblr media
It's easier to see from this angle.
Tumblr media
You can see more detail on the guan here, and we have a nice shot of his hand holding the pearl and the googly eyes on the lantern.
Tumblr media
I like the hair a lot on this fig, it's a great look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This fig maker always has great box card art, and you can see the name of the fig here - Pearl of the East China Sea.
Material: Resin
Fig Count: 493
Scene Count: 31
Rating: Even more precious than a pearl
