something that i think people don't understand abt manifesting is that you really need to forget abt the "how"
i want to share something that happened recently at work. as many of you know, im working my dream job that i manifested in the void. the coworkers are great, the pay is amazing, i do like the work im doing and i manifested being really good at it too BUT recently i kind of hit a block mentally. there wasn't really anything i disliked and i couldn't even explain what i felt and why i felt this way.
i talked to some friends but all they could suggest is getting a new job but that wasn't it either.
anyways i know LOA and i can even enter the void. i didn't enter the void for this issue because i didn't know what i wanted so one night, when i was contemplating this entire issue, i decided no more. i just knowingly told myself that i would start loving my job and did SATS for it.
within the next day, a coworker announced she was moving to a different company. and by coworker, i meant a huge boss. this threw our entire company into a frenzy and it was determined that my department was to take on some of her stuff. all of us had our responsibilities moved around and i got some new tasks.
these new tasks are so fun! and i also came into realization as to what was troubling me. i work in data analytics, meaning i look at all my company's data and i analyze trends or anything else people need. i manifested being insanely good at coding and having an easy time with projects so i really like this job but i kinda didn't see any results of my work. i would do all this work and then hand it off to someone and just start doing something else. however, one of my new responsibilities is actually seeing what happens with my data, seeing what people do with it, and I'm now able to directly speak to some people in meetings and such and emphasize my thoughts. when i first manifested everything in the void, it was coming from a girl who was pretty insecure and shy and liked to keep to herself. im still an introvert (ig that never really leaves you) but now im way more confident and ig i really wanted to talk to people and push my ideas more.
not to mention, these new responsibilities opened up a whole new coworker circle for me. don't get me wrong, i love my coworker friends but it's always fun to meet newer people and i met some really nice people who are changing the way i think professionally but are also great people in general.
i also got my equipment upgraded and i never realized how annoying my old equipment was until i experienced the new equipment.
anyways i could go on and on but the point im trying to make is "don't worry about the how." i literally didn't even know why i was feeling down and if you had asked me before if that coworker would be leaving, i would have said no. she's been working there for 20+ years and she always loved her job and had amazing benefits so no one saw this coming, but i did talk to her and she said she always wanted to try a different industry and she finally got the opportunity. not to mention, my department and her department aren't even closely related. ig my department knows a little bit of everyone's stuff because we look at everyone's data but we were totally blindsided when we were first told thar we were the ones that were going to help take over, esp such a high level person's job.
this is a side story but one night, i just really wanted some cookies. ig i was having midnight munchies but the cookies were 25 miles away and there was just no way it was happening. anyways i fell asleep knowing that i was going to get the cookies the next day and i was just thinking of doordash or grabbing them myself but when i woke up, the cookies were on the kitchen table. before everyone starts hating and asking how those cookies appeared out of nowhere, apparently my friend was in the area and thought of me so she grabbed me some as soon as they opened and left it on my kitchen table.
so seriously, stop worrying about the how and what ifs and just go straight to your desire.

“Bruv, you sure ya okay?” Lemon’s voice reached his brother’s ears, trying to wake him up from his trance.
Lemon noticed how Tangerine’s figure completely froze when he read a message on his phone. It felt uncharacteristically from him, being completely still and silent for such a long time.
Is he having a heart attack? Thought Lemon, his gaze still locked on his brother.
Slowly, trying not to scare him off, the man approached his brother’s figure, standing still in the middle of the living room.
Just a few minutes ago, the curly-haired man was simply reading a book on the couch when a little ‘ping’ from his phone caught his attention.
With an annoyed groan the man rose from his comfortable position on the couch and picked his phone, which was on the armchair.
Lemon simply observed the scene unfazed since he didn’t discovered any signs of a strange behaviour from his brother. But things changed when the other man checked the phone.
At first the room had fallen into a strange silence, no longer the comfortable silence of before but one that managed to put anyone in the room in awe.
Time seemed to have slowed down and it was also the outside that fell silent. If before Lemon could hear a few cars passing by or simply the urban noises of the city, now even those had suddenly died down and disappeared into thin air.
Very few things in their career had managed to silence Tangerine noticeably. Other things, however, had him talking until Lemon's head burst.
And the subject of his conversations was always her.
Lemon knew by heart the story of how Tangerine had first met the girl, always specifying how his was only an initial hatred that gradually became simple tolerance.
Ruby. This was the name constantly present on his lips.
Firstly, Lemon heard how Tangerine called her an insufferable girl, overconfident and convinced she was better than everyone else.
But afterwards... the situation had completely changed.
He had heard how she had managed to eliminate an entire organisation, kill the boss and complete the job in the shortest possible time. A single week.
Tangerine rarely spoke well of other people, but she was clearly an exception.
Lemon often teased him, just for the fun of it. "Ya only eva talk ‘bout her, ya ‘ave a crush?" But each time the curly-haired man denied it.
It was perfectly normal for him to appreciate the talents of another colleague. The only problem was that Tangerine never made appreciations about others. Only he didn't realise it.
“Mate, the fuck ya doin’?” Asked annoyed Lemon, tired of seeing his brother’s frozen figure in the middle of the living room. With a deep sigh he took place on the large couch, remote control in hand. “I really wan’ta watch Thomas, but I fuckin’ can’t with you in the fuckin’ way.” He said through clenched teeth, irritation evident in his words.
Finally Tangerine woke up from his trance and dumbfoundedly his wide gaze fell on his brother, who was looking at him annoyingly.
With a raise of his eyebrows, the man once again demanded an explanation. Quickly the brother showed his own phone, which was open on a phone number. His contractor for that job.
“Wha’ I’m s’ppos’d to be lookin’ at?” Asked Lemon, a bored expression on his face while his eyes lazily read the message.
With a trembling finger, due to adrenaline and excitement, Tangerine pointed at a specific word, more exactly a phrase.
“You won’t be working alone. You’re partner for this job will be Ruby.” Read the man from the couch but his expression still bewildered. “I still don’t understand, bruv.”
A groan coming from the standing man echoed through the room. Tangerine irritatedly pinched his nose bridge, hoping to calm down a little. “Ya bell end, it’s her.”
His brother only stared at him as if he had grown two heads. “‘m not followin’ mate.”
“Ruby! It’s her. I’ve been partnered up with her!” The man shouted under his breath, eyes wide and full of an enthusiasm that looked too strange on him. He was like a child on Christmas.
Lemon still did not speak. His confusion was still too evident on his face. Yet he should know who his brother was talking about.
Then Heureka.
It was like a lightbulb lightened up on his head. At the same time his eyes grew bigger and his mouth opened wide. “Ooh…got it, got it…” his head bouncing a couple of times in an affermative motion.
Tangerine was ready to answer his brother harshly when his phone rang with an incoming call. An unknown number.
“Who’s it?” Lemon asked pretending to care when in reality his attention was on the television, Thomas & Friends now playing.
“I don’t fuckin’ know— hello, the fuck ya want?” Tangerine answered the phone and the unwelcoming tone he used showed clearly his high irritation and the no patience left.
“Is this how you talk to work partners?” The frown on his face immediately shifted into a stunned expression. The voice from the other side of phone was the most angelic one he ever heard.
He had only watched her from afar, never really interacted with her. That meant that he also never have heard her voice either.
He always imagined how her voice would have been, but his dreams could never be compared to her real voice.
And that first interaction with her left him speechless.
He had always planned his first meeting with the girl. He hoped he could charm the girl with his charm and maybe invite her out. But apparently luck was not on his side.
“Well, it’s nice to finally meet you, Tangerine. Even if not in person, for now.” Spoke the voice again, this time waking the man from his temporary trance.
Tangerine cleared his throat, “M’apologise love, wasn’t my intention to speak t’ya like that.” He explained sheepishly. His tone wasn’t his usual one, the rude and annoyed one, but one more submitted and apologetical. Almost…gentle.
Lemon often glanced up at him, unimpressed.
“It’s fine. Now let’s talk about the job.” Ordered the voice from the other side.
Tangerine nodded his head multiple times. “A’right, love.” And off he was, into his office, his figure followed for a short amount of time by Lemon’s unbothered eyes.
Tumblr media
Everything needed to go as planned. No one had to fuck up and nothing had to stop them.
They had spent a lot of time on analysing every detail of the job, in order to avoid inconveniences and notarlo failure. The pay was pretty high, so they had to do a proper job.
The contractor, when contacted the two, explained them the type of job: apparently a well-know mafia boss of France had organised a ball in which were invited criminals from all over the world. His intention was to present a poisonous gas capable of killing a large army with the smallest dose.
A woman and a man were standing outside a large villa, where music was blasted from inside.
The two were arm in arm and wore extremely elegant clothes, perfect for the occasion.
“Are you ready, mister Tangerine?” the lady smirked at the man beside her, a confident sparkle in her eyes.
“Always ready, love.” He smirked back.
When they entered the ball room they were pervaded by smoke and loud chatter from the other guests.
Warm lights illuminated the entire room, showing off all the baroque details of the place.
With confident steps, the couple advanced through the room, their arms still entwined with each other and a polite smile on both faces. They had to give a very good impression and not arouse any kind of suspicion.
Their gazes keenly observed the entire environment, the people and especially the blind spots in the room. They could not afford mistakes.
Instinctively, Tangerine abandoned the grip of their arms and encircled her colleague's waist, displaying a strong and secure hold.
That action did not bother the girl; on the contrary, she tried to get as close to his body as possible. Because she felt safe with him.
“A’right love, seen the target yet?”
Their job was to identify the person responsible for selling the poison, kill him as quietly as possible and finally steal all the information concerning the poison.
If they wanted, they could have also blew everyone up once they had completed the main tasks of the job. But they had to remain professional.
The woman analysed each guest, her eyes scanning every little detail in order to find the one described in the documents received.
But there were so many people that it was lightly complicated than normal. His body moved a little closer to that of the man by her side. His cologne immediately reaching her nose.
It would have been a lie to say that she was not attracted to him.
“Nothing. It’s like he’s not even here.” Then something clicked on her mind.
Of course the target wasn’t there!
While the party was going, his job was to anticipate the spread of poison on a global scale. This whole party was just a whole cover.
Suddenly, she brought her face closer to his, her breath tickling his ear. A small smile on her face, to disguise themselves and to not let the cover blow up.
“Most likely he’s not here because he needs to sell the gas earlier, all over the world.” She explained, his eyes fluttering close briefly due to her proximity.
The heart in his chest started beating wildly, as if he had just finished running a marathon.
But in reality he was simply in a sumptuous, baroque-style hall, teeming with people whose intent was simply to shift their attention elsewhere.
Oh, how he wished they could be the only one there. And dance together all the night.
In each other arms.
With a sharp look he scanned the room again, noticing something unusual.
The number of bodyguards was even, as it was well known that the boss did not like odd numbers. According to him, they were bad luck.
Therefore he had decided to place two bodyguards every six metres throughout the hall. But then why were there as many as three bodyguards near one wall?
Something was not right.
"Let's try lookin’ there," he whispered. The girl gave him a confused sideways glance "What? And why?" "Just a guess.”
As his hand gently gripped at her waist, they gracefully moved around the large hall trying to attract as little attention as possible.
Her ample dress sparkled slightly, emphasising the strong colour of the dress. It was very difficult for Tangerine to maintain attention. His grip tightened slightly.
The girl understood her colleague's intentions, having also noticed the unusual position of the three bodyguards.
Now all that was needed was to find a distraction.
But someone up there surely was helping them since a dispute nearby drawn the three bodyguards’ attention.
Swiftly, the couple slipped into the hidden entrance of the hall, initially finding themselves in a simple corridor. Neither a door nor a soul. The corridor was completely empty.
The two began to walk down the dimly lit corridor, walking as lightly as possible on the floor. Surely their intention was not to attract the attention of the guards.
The corridor extended a few more metres and then continued to the left, where it ended in a security door.
A code was required to enter.
“I got it” she said under her breath, pulling a little bottle spray from between her breasts. The perfect hiding spot thought Tangerine with a satisfied look.
The door creaked open and the couple was met with a dark laboratory.
Long, thin shelves filled with vials containing yellowish liquid ran along the entire front wall. Machines were positioned on several metal tables. But no sign of the scientist responsible.
However, a strong smell of chemicals and smoke could still be smelled in the air, a sign that the machinery had recently been switched off.
The feminine figure gracefully wondered around the immense laboratory, observing closely the vials. The man behind her approached a cabinet in a corner.
“This isn’t what we’re looking for. These are just wrong prototypes.” She exclaimed, picking a vial between her fingers.
Tangerine only hummed approvingly, immediately losing interest in the empty cabinet. But something caught his attention.
One of the shelves seemed shallow compared to the others and only an experienced eye would have noticed this.
Tapping the bottom of the shelf with his hand, Tangerine noticed the wall moving slightly. With his fingers he managed to move the bottom, revealing a black button.
Suddenly the locker opened with a slight click and promptly Tangerine opened the new entrance with both hands.
From the back of the new entrance he heard the clatter of some metal objects. A whispered mutter prompted the man to move.
Without wasting any time he hurried down the narrow dark corridor, following the noise coming from the other side. One hand was already ready on the gun hidden in his trousers.
But before he could leap into action, a bullet grazed his cheekbone. A cry of exasperation escaped his lips. “Tan-“ she was calling out for him but in a second his figure was running back, where she was.
His voice interrupted hers “Ruby! Ruby! Take cover!”another bullet now grazed his tight.
Both of them were on either side of the door, their backs to the wall and their heads turned towards the entrance.
Quick bullets flew all the way down the corridor to the entrance, preventing the two from controlling the situation.
“We need to rush in!” “Ya crazy! D’ya hav’ a death wish or som’thin’?” “Tangerine it’s the only way in! You have better ideas?!” The man only looked at her, his blue eyes pierced into hers “Just…just please Ruby, don’ get hurt.”
The woman smiled sweetly at him “You can call me (Y/n)” she said before jumping in action.
He followed her figure with a love sick look in his eyes.
a/n !
I know I know shitty ending, didn’t really know how to end this one. I still hope you all liked it and sorry if I’m posting frequently but I’m not home right now!
Love you all and take care! <3

Mister Fantastic
Reed Richards x f!reader
Omg it’s finally here!!! My first little drabble finally leaves the work in progress stage.
Pedro was finally confirmed as Reed Richards today and I just had the thought of him pulling you back with his stretchy arm into a hug and this was born.
Warning: angst (not all the way), fluff, cute shit, reader has no description, no use of y/n
Count: ~2.2k
Not proof read sorry not sorry k enjoy~
~~~
You were crying, trying to just leave. You wanted to leave so badly but your legs just couldn't move.
"Tell me you don't love me... just tell me that." He whispers, standing just a few feet away from you.
"Reed..." Your voice cracks as you could barely get the sound out. Being with him was difficult, terrifying. You were in love with a superhero that risked his life every day and, although commendable and brave of him, you saw him almost die today and that was enough for you.
The romance you had built, the relationship, it started out in the strangest way. You were actually Sue Storm's best friend, at least you were until her ego took a hit from those powers they all got during that accident. You always wanted to get close to Reed, ever since you first met him. Sue got to him first though and you just let it be.
You had to force your feelings down for who-knows-how-long. Seeing them love each other, be so disgustingly in love. Then, she was the one who broke things off. She couldn't handle competing with his work. He was married to his job and she couldn't accept that.
You aren't a scientist, you work in marketing for a tech company but you're nowhere near as smart as he is. You would find him in his lab, working away into the late night hours. You were always so quiet when the break-up first happened, tiptoeing around him because you could tell it took a toll on him. You'd visit just for the company. You lived alone in an apartment complex, paying a bit too much for what it was worth.
You started to bring him a small coffee when you had the time to stop at the cafe next to the building. He wouldn't mind you being there, since all you did was sit and work on other projects.
Over the time you saw him heal, conversations would pop up on those late nights. You'd ask questions about all his work and he would try to simplify it so you could understand, comparing it to other things and just making it easy. You'd find yourself staring whenever he would go off on his tangents, admiring how he got so passionate when talking about his work.
You two started to hang out outside of the group. Sue and him kept things professional for work and still remained somewhat friends. It got easier as time went on. She noticed you two starting to be alone more and you were aware of the girl code but she was the one who left him. She would tell you how she doesn't love him the way she did anymore, how she was completely moved on. She also saw the way you'd look at him and understood, so she didn't say anything when you two started to see each other.
The first date was a mess, you were running late getting ready because work had kept you longer than scheduled, the restaurant messing up the dinner reservation, his car breaking down when he drove you home. It started raining right when the engine started to make a weird noise. You two had pulled over on the side of the road and waited for the tow. You laughed at the situation, seeing how it was all going downhill so quickly. He looks at you and you could've sworn, you saw the stars in his eyes when you looked back.
"Are you laughing at our misery?" He asks in a joking tone, obviously finding this funny as well.
You smile brightly, taking a good look at his face before nodding. "The universe wanted to give us a night to remember." You whisper softly, quickly getting lost in his eyes. The silence that filled the car was comforting. Nobody needed to speak to know what you both wanted at that moment. The only sound was the soft pitter-patter of the rain on the car. He leaned in slower than anything, cautious that he might be reading all these signals incorrectly. Your smile reassured him that he was doing everything right.
"Just fucking kiss me, Richards..." You whisper before leaning in to press your lips to his. His lips moved slowly but you could tell he held back. He wanted to pull you over that center console and hold you in his arms. You smile against his lips as one hand reaches up, gently being placed on your jaw to hold you. It felt like you two were like this for hours but when you finally pulled away, only a few minutes had passed.
The tow arrived not long after that. They managed to restart the battery and send you two on your way. You invited him in for a glass of wine and he ended up staying the night. Nothing happened but you were pleased to find him passed out and snoring slightly next to you the next morning.
From that point on, everything just got better for the both of you. Your late visits to his lab turned into little date nights in the lab. Your apartment became less lonely, as did his. It was fun to be around the group, especially Ben who was waiting for it to happen. He made a bet with Johnny that you two would get together, and Johnny ended up owing him $20.
Everything was perfect, and then you saw him go to space.
You thought your world had ended when you heard about the accident. Your life, everything you had with him, it all flashed before you when you were told. You didn't know if he was alive, only that there was an explosion and he was being treated, but no word on his condition. The officers talked to you but you just stood there in complete silence, the warmth and color from your body completely leaving you.
You felt like throwing up when you heard he was in the hospital being operated on. You were taken there, nearly carried because you just felt useless, frozen. Sitting in complete silence in the waiting room, you didn't trust your stomach to eat or drink anything. There was news about the others, they were in stable condition and recovering. You went to visit Sue in the meantime, thinking she might be able to help calm your nerves while you waited for something. You two sat in mostly silence as she felt your anxiousness.
"He'll be okay. If we survived, he will too." She says softly, just earning a small nod from you.
The doctor found you, you were asleep on the chair in Sue's hospital room. Hearing that he was alive and stable, you made a run to his room and found him asleep, wires hooked up to him everywhere.
You were there when he woke up, holding his hand and asleep on the most uncomfortable chair ever but you managed. He stared at you, wanting to tell you that he loved you right at that moment but the words couldn't come out. He lets you sleep, knowing you probably need it more than he does.
The discovery of his powers was scary for the both of you. Neither of you knew what was happening but all of the sudden, his limbs just began to stretch. At first, you were horrified, seeing parts of his face just droop to the floor like a horror film. You began to grow just more curious as time went by. His nights in the lab turned even longer as now he had himself to study. Susan and Johnny came to him upon the discovery of their powers, and then there was Ben. Ben hated the world for what he had become but Reed made life easier. Ben still hated being solid rock but Reed made things nicer with the special suits made to help with their powers. It controlled Johnny's body temperature, helped Sue blend in when she became invisible, molded to Ben's form, and stretched with his own body. You watched his brilliant mind create all of this, not knowing what the future now had in store for them.
Bringing it back to this moment, you were trying to leave. You waited for him in the lab, watching as he worked tirelessly on trying to help himself heal. The villain he faced today got too close to killing the man you love. You couldn't watch this anymore, you couldn't wake up to an empty bed. You two moved in together not too long ago and you wanted things to be like how they were. You missed his warmth, staying under the covers into the late morning before getting up and starting your days. You worked from home more often so you could catch him. The strain in your relationship became more apparent even if you chose to ignore it.
You look at him, tears in your eyes as you have had enough.
"I..." You can't get the sentence out because even if you leave him, you will spend the rest of your life devoting your love to him.
"I know... I know things are difficult right now but please... I need you more than anything. You are my support, my lifeline." Reed doesn't reach out to you but his words did. You could see him trying to hold back the tears, the complete destruction of emotions on his face.
"I can't see you almost die and have people expect me to be okay with it. Reed, you are everything to me. You are my world, my universe revolves around you. Don't go telling me that it shouldn't because no matter what, it will. I am so in love with you and I can't ever stop being in love with you. I hate you for making me love you so much... for allowing me to fall so damn hard." The tears stream down your cheeks again. It hurts you, thinking of being away from him. But it hurt you even more to think about him dying.
"What do you want me to do?" He asks, his big brown eyes looking so sad. You loved those the most about him, his eyes. You couldn't count how many times you've gotten lost in them. "Please let me fix this. Let me fix us." He whispers softly when he doesn't get a response from you.
The silence hits again, but this one was much different than the others you've experienced with him. There was negative tension, anxiousness and sadness. You saw desperation in his eyes unlike anything you've ever seen before.
He calls your name out softly, breaking the silence first. You look into his eyes and, before you know it, an arm is stretched out to you, his hand hooking around your waist and pulling you to him. You let him hold you because you know you can't leave. You're stuck here but you'll never complain.
"Let's work together... and fix our broken pieces..." He whispers softly, his words making you look up at him as your hands rest flat against his chest. "This new life... we need to adapt and I'm not going to let you go. I'm not going to let you leave. I need you to keep me strong." He says as he leans in to press his forehead to yours.
"You're Mister Fantastic. You don't need me to be strong." You say through the soft gasps from crying. He holds you a little tighter and there's another pause before he breaks it. "I need you. I'll always need you." He whispers almost breathlessly.
He whispers your name, making you look into his eyes again. You swore you almost whimpered out loud when you got lost once again.
You opened your mouth to speak, closing your eyes and softly exhaling before finally letting a sound out.
"I'll stay..." You finally get out as you look up at him again. He looked so relieved, holding you tight and hiding his face in your neck.
"I love you... more than anything." He breathes out into your skin. "Even more than physics?" You ask with a little smile, causing him to chuckle. "Even more than physics. Although physics-"
"Are you really going to debate your love for me and talk about physics?" You laugh as you pull away just enough to see him smiling.
"Okay, okay." He shakes his head and adjusts his hold on you.
"I love you more than anything... more than science, more than life itself. If I could configure the stars in your image, it still wouldn't be comparable to your beau-"
"Oh now you're just overexaggerating!" You laugh even more, smiling as he leans in to give you a soft, gentle kiss.
"I love you Mister Fantastic..." You whisper the second he pulls away.
"And I love you... future Mrs. Fantastic." He smirks, that playful look in his eyes making you roll yours.
You couldn't wait for the future with him, your Mister Fantastic.
Codetober Day #2
2. What programming languages do you know?
Depends on how we wanna define "know" but here are the ones I at least know the basics of:
-Python - my very first coding class was in this, then I proceeded to not use it again for a long time until recently when I tried my hand at writing a Discord bot for Pathfinder/DnD 3.5 -Perl - Please do not ask me to write anything in this. I did one semester and proceeded to never use it again. -MIPS - same as Perl -C++ - I'm not great with this one but my first college decided this was a great place to go once we learned Python. I hadn't used it in a long time unfortunately, till I tried to pick up Unreal Engine -Java - After leaving college #1 and a bit of community college, I first learned Java. This is what I mainly use in my 9-5 work since all of my corporate positions have required it, along with... -SQL - I picked this up in college as well and while I went a pretty long time after graduating without using it, I DO know how to do some scripting and queries. -Javascript - I didn't use this much initially until my first big boy job changed my role to that of a full-stack developer as opposed to a software developer. -C# - Aside from a single semester in college, I actually didn't use this all that much till my most recent job. They are moving away from it and towards Java, so this works out. I also used this to try to learn programming in Unity. Outside of the professional stuff... -LUA - I used to be a HUGE WoW fan and stopped playing around Legion. Before that, I aspired to write add-ons for the game and found out this was the scripting language for it. -GML - Aka "GameMaker Language," I tried my hand at this engine as well when I was bouncing around trying to see which engine was a good fit.
hi, im an high school sophomore interested in computer science and im also new to your blog. i was wondering if you would recommend conputer science and what have been your strengths and pitfalls with the field? thank u so much for your time.
Hi! Welcome to my blog, haha thanks for stopping by and sending an ask!
My path was self-taught game dev/web dev -> CS degree -> cybersecurity, so that's the perspective I'm writing from. My current job is basically just writing code for cybersecurity-related things (which I really like!). I do enjoy computer science and I think it's a great field to get into because you can do so many different things! I listed out my personal pros/cons under the cut but the tl;dr is that CS is a good field if you like constantly learning things, building things, and knowing how stuff works under the hood.
things I like about computer science:
so many options and things you can learn/specialize in
having programming skills and knowing how computers work gives you the foundational knowledge to succeed in a lot of things, both practical and theoretical/research-based. if you don't really like programming, there is plenty of theoretical math stuff you can do that's related to CS (this is what my partner is going back to grad school for haha)
lots of info available online for self-guided learning
do you want to learn how to make X? someone has almost certainly already written a tutorial for that and put it online for free. there are lots of open-source projects out there where you can read their documentation and even look at the code to figure out how things work!
there is always more to learn
tech evolves and you have to keep your skills up to date - that means there's always something new and interesting happening!
being able to build things
do you want to make an app? a website? a video game? a quick script to automate some annoying task that you do all the time? you can do that. all you need is a computer and some time! once you have some skills, it's amazing when you realize you can just Make Stuff literally whenever
understanding how things actually work
in a world of apps & operating systems that actively try to hide the technical layer of how they work in favor of "user friendliness", there is power to understanding what's actually happening inside your computer
problem-solving mindset
this kind of goes hand-in-hand with being able to build things, but eventually you get the hang of looking at a problem, breaking it down, and figuring out how to build a solution. this is something that I knew was an important soft skill, but I didn't really have any concrete examples until I started working with some technical but non-programmer coworkers. knowing programming & how to build things really does just help you solve problems in a concrete way and I think that's pretty cool.
things that can make computer science difficult:
programming is a cycle of failing until you succeed
programming is not something you get right on your first try - there's a reason that patches and updates and bug fixes exist. this might take some getting used to at first, but after that it's not an issue. failing constantly is just part of the process, but that means that solving those problems and feeling great when you figure it out is also part of the process!
there's so much to learn, you will have to go out and learn some of it on your own
a CS degree will not fully prepare you to be a professional developer, you will likely have to learn other languages & frameworks on your own (this is kind of a good thing btw - the average college probably isn't updating their curriculum often enough to teach you relevant frameworks/some professional coding things).
there is always more to learn
this is the other side of tech always evolving - sometimes it can feel like you're constantly behind, and that's okay - you can't learn literally everything! just do your best, explore a bit, and figure out the subset of things that you're actually interested in
lots of screen time
there are tech jobs where you can be active and move around and stuff, but I work from home and write code most of the day so I spend a ton of time in front of my computer. this isn't a huge problem, I just make an effort to spend time on my non-computer hobbies outside of work. something to note when you're looking for jobs, I suppose!
occasional toxic culture?
I'm thinking of "leetcode grindset bros" here because that was a common character at the college I went to - just ignore them and do things at a pace that feels comfortable to you, you'll be fine
on a related note, in my experience there will always be some dude who has been programming since like the age of 5 and seems to know everything and is kind of an ass about it, ignore these people too and you'll be fine
things are getting better, but CS is still very much a male-dominated field. however, there are plenty of organizations focused on supporting minority groups in tech! you can find a support group and there will always be people rooting for you.
that got kinda long lol, but feel free to reach out if you have any more questions!
jdorama autumn 2022
We'll start off with the medical shows.
PICU / Paediatrics Intensive Care Unit (10.3%) Stars: Yoshizawa Ryo, Yasuda Ken
I really wanted to like this drama. Yoshizawa Ryo has improved a lot in his acting, and most of the supporting actors (Yasuda Ken, Kimura Fumino, Kikuchi Rinko) are all veterans. There are some good lessons in it - for example, the root cause analysis in the first episode, and the ethical issues of discussing treatment plans without the guardian present.
But even then, it was hard to suspend my disbelief, and it looks like people in Biei are protesting about the unrealistic portrayal of the local services. The central idea that they set up a PICU (paediatrics ICU) with ONE nurse and three doctors already threw me. Dafuq? You can't run a unit with one nurse (* not that places haven't tried), much less an 8-bedded ICU - which by definition means one on one nursing 24/7. Or even small things like doing a root cause analysis meeting immediately after a death while everyone is still upset and shaken. Yes no doubt it is important to review where things went wrong, but the most important thing (apart from checking the family is coping) is supporting your own staff's mental health, and it's not done by hounding the most junior staff until they're in tears.
Inori no Karute / The Records of Hope (6.5%) Stars: Tamamori Yuta
Like PICU, there are things I really like about this show and there are things that really threw me. Firstly, I really like how the interns were rotating between specialties. I don't know if this is a new thing in Japan, because my understanding is they used to go directly into their specialty, but I always give extra points to medical shows that make the effort to acknowledge there is more than one specialty in hospital and that in fact medical treatment isn't all surgical or crit care!
The second thing I really like is the focus on medical records (although that message seems to have gotten diluted in following episodes). Good records capture something beyond the clinical diagnosis and treatment, and it fleshes out the person -- their social supports, their way of dealing with grief and conflict, their motivations and fears. Sometimes even without the note-taker actively trying, you can glimpse these in the notes. There is value in diagnostics, there is value in good communication...but this show acknowledges there's value in historical documents that contextualises the present and gives us clues as to why someone is seeking help this time.
That said, there are lots of small things that threw me as well. Some things being disclosed when it would clearly violate privacy. Some of the interns being way too invested in the private lives of the patients (to the point it's crossing major professional boundaries). Or the fact that in the first episode, the entire friggin hospital turned up for a Code Blue. Please. You've all got work to do!
Travel Nurse (11.9) Stars: Okada Masaki, Nakai Keichi
Written by the team that brought you the 7 (or was it 9) season power fantasy Doctor X about an independent-minded anti-authoritarian doctor who did surgery for hire...comes a story about an independent-minded anti-authoritarian nurse who does...nursing for hire.
I did like: the fact that there's two main characters, and that the younger character has already made a few mistakes that gets corrected by the older one, so he's not in the "I never fail" league that Daimon Michiko is in (which gave me the shits anyway so good riddance). I have a soft spot for Okada so it's nice to see him back on TV. I also did like the introduction of nurse practitioners, which is not something you see a lot...but...
I didn't like: the idea that one nurse practitioner can do the jobs of 10 nurses is probably a little insulting to nurses. Apparently Japan doesn't recognise nurse practitioners? So the main character is legally not allowed to use his nurse practitioner skills in daily practice? So it remains to be seen why him being a nurse practitioner is relevant to the story. The scene where the older nurse was literally going to watch someone under his care suffocate until he agreed to something deemed good. Personally, this is a huge transgression. Health workers are not jury or police. Your job is to provide healing to people, not to judge their actions and decide whether they're worth saving. That's a massive slippery slope with huge ethical ramifications. Just. No.
"is this it?" BLOG POST #1: hey, you! meet adulthood. the ghetto, if you will...
Author's Note:
First of all, welcome to my blog! It feels so surreal to be saying that because this is something I have wanted to do for so long, but fear, laziness, and "plans" kept me from doing so. I am so happy that you have decided to take time out of your day to sit and read my post. I'm so excited to be able to share these stories with you all about my dirty little cousin, Adulthood. She doesn't mean any harm, she just doesn't know any better. Trust me. I hope you are intrigued by what I have to say and I would love to chat with you in the comments about these topics. Enjoy!
"Don't you find it odd, that when you're a kid, everyone, all the world, encourages you to follow your dreams. But when you're older, somehow they act offended if you even try."
-Unknown (The Hottest State)
I can say, without hesitation, that I was not fully prepared for what adulthood had to offer. She came without remorse, but made sure to bring all sorts of debt, the occasional iffy encounter, and topped it all off with a micro-aggression or two (or ten). In these instances where I was thrown into situations dealing with money, racism, self-identity, relationships, etc., how did I handle these episodes with minimal detrimental impact on my inner psyche? The answer; I didn't because I didn't know how to.
I vividly remember the process of applying to colleges, final senior presentations, deciding what school I wanted to go to, all while being molded in the belief that college was the best option, if not the only option, for young, black, teenagers, like myself, who wanted to be successful. Please don't misunderstand me when I say this. I definitely agree with the fact that as young adults we should be able to take advantage of all the opportunities given to us including continuing an education at a four-year institution and experiencing all that college has to offer like social engagements and freshmen fifteen. However, I do not believe that is the only way to solidify success in a society where situations like going to a four year conventional university have become the norm. While we are molded into believing a four-year college is one of only three options for teenagers of color [the other options being pregnancy or prison as stereotype culture has taught us] we are limited in the knowledge of only knowing how to make it TO college, and not how to be successful THROUGHOUT and beyond college and I am a prime example.
Due to the stigma of black high school dropouts, often times, high schools in cities like Detroit (who primarily house students of African decent) strive for one-hundred percent high school graduation and college acceptance rates ,as apposed to, one-hundred percent college fulfillment and graduation rates. In other words, they don't care how you get home from the party, as long as you were invited. And I mean who can blame them?! While primarily white high schools with students trying to decide if they want to attend either Harvard or Yale are spitting out graduates left and right, primarily black high schools can't even get scantron sheets on time for their junior students to take the SAT, which is it supposed to be an equal opportunity test for all students, accept those with brown skin of course. (This happened at my high school btw.)
Then I get to college only to see that all of my professors are old, white, dirty men, which is not in fact the demographic I grew up within. Is this it? Is this what my parents are paying almost forty-thousand dollars a year for? Is this your King?! 👨🏼‍🏫Well, I'm here now and I guess I need to stick this out. Never mind being one of only four black students in an intro to political science class of almost forty-five. Never mind having a black roommate who didn't know if she wanted to be Ebony or Ivory that day. Her white boyfriend did tell me I had nice skin one day which was nice of him. Never mind me working at the McDonald's right across the street from my dorm my freshman year where almost everyday somebody I knew would come and try to get free food from me. (That didn't really have anything to do with my hardships during my time at college, but it was irritating trying not to get caught smuggling cookies and McFlurries out of the store every other day. I was too nice obviously.) Never mind having to refrain from using any kind of ebonics in order to fit into conversations and/or lectures about political science topics in order to sound more professional and educated to my white peers and professors (A.K.A code switching😶‍🌫️ 🎛). Overall, the majority of my time spent inside the college classroom setting was often done in ways that involved me faking it until I made it, until I didn't make it.
I dropped out of college at the end of my sophomore year and at the time it seemed like my biggest failure. Not only did I feel like I failed myself, I felt like I failed my family and closest friends and quite literally I failed most of my classes😬. Not to mention the thousands of dollars in student loans left for me to pay back which was bound to happen anyways but that is a totally different conversation for another post. (Sallie Mae better hope she don't catch these hands.) I felt like, as do most young adults my age, there was a timeline on my success. If I didn't get that college degree in four years, and have a car and apartment by twenty, my life had no worth. This narrative was brought on not only by my school environment growing up, but it was brought on by the climate that we live in today. As young people, we are so easily influenced by pop culture, social media, YouTube, sports media, our peers, music and so many other ideals constantly bombarding our everyday lives. We're shown these unrealistic almost fantasy-like scenarios in which all you have to do it make a prank video in order to make money and once you have money, fame, and a VLONE shirt, boom, you have worth! Why am I rushing to fulfill these egregious standards set by these dull influencers who can't even spell egregious. Success does not have only one definition. To me, success is defined by your own standards and not society's. And college is not a one stop shop!
The picture of adulthood has been painted so monochromatically that I have at times lost my ability to dare to dream bigger than what has been laid before me with society's crusty hands. Yes I plan on finishing my education at a four year college, but at the time, my college experience would not have allotted me the opportunity to discover the world of Cyber Security and the many job opportunities and networks I've been exposed to.
All in all, take advantage of ALL the opportunities you encounter whether they are laid out in front of you or even if you have to network to find them.
This was just a piece of the perspectives I am excited to offer as I continue to share my stories in this world of blogging and rediscovery. I hope I didn't scare any of you off already because in my next blog piece I will be diving into more aspects of adulthood and the whole notion of relationships(romantic and non); do we really need them tho? and how do we weed out the bad ones and water the fruitful ones?
Getting Stopped by the Cops and Other Embarrassing Things That Happened in My First Week of Freedom
Hello hello!
It's been one week since I was freed from the two week travelers' quarantine upon arriving in Korea. So much has happened this past week I can barely believe it's only been a single week!
Moving to a new country comes with a lot of stumbling blocks, especially when you don't speak the language. Today's post is framed within some of the more embarrassing (and funny) growing pains I have had this week.
Monday
My first day out of quarantine was on Monday! I would be released at 12pm, so my school director thought it would be prudent to get my health exam the same day in order to get it out of the way. Everyone entering Korea with my visa needs a full health exam to ensure we are not bringing any problematic illnesses (besides COVID) to the country.
So my first day out of quarantine consisted of being poked, prodded, peeing in a cup, drawing blood, getting x-rayed fully naked, and other awful ventures. Many people at the health center didn't speak English, but my school director helped when she could, and everyone was very kind. Still, it felt kind of humiliating for my first post-isolation experience.
Afterwards, she took me to a cafe for lunch, to the grocery store for supplies, and she also gave me a tour of my apartment building. It was a full day, and a little overstimulating to be honest. I went to bed early before my first day of work.
Tumblr media
Tuesday
On Tuesday I started at my new job! I learned all about the school, it's curriculum, and observed a few classes. I have a lot of thoughts about the school, but I'll speak about it in another post.
Wednesday
I taught a full day of classes.
Yep, you heard right. I taught a full day of classes on my second day of work. For the most part it went alright, but it is a STRUGGLE to jump into a class in which you have no context, don't know the students, or even what they have been learning. But I got through it!
Thursday & Friday
For the rest of the week, I taught most of my classes. Typically teachers will observe for a few days, but my director had me jump right in. It was tough, and I think it's going to continue to be that way for a few weeks. It's kind of terrible to be so unsure of yourself at the front of the classroom, as well as having to conduct myself in such a specific way to fit the school's standards. I've been teaching for years but still really doubted myself this week. But I guess I'll learn!
On Friday after work, a co-worker of mine (also a newbie!) and I were bored and decided to explore the neighborhood. Since we get out of work at 9pm, it was too late for anything to be open. Currently, Seoul is at a level 4 lockdown, so all restaurants and bars are closed by 9pm. Gangnam was a ghost town as we walked around, but it was still nice to get out of the apartment.
Tumblr media
Saturday
The same co-worker and I decided to go shopping for new work clothes. I was under the impression my job would be a business casual dress code...but as it turns out they expect us to look extremely professional, and I needed new clothes.
We took the subway to an underground mall and shopped for hours. It was really fun! The mall was underground, and consisted of a ton of clothing stalls. Unfortunately, it was a struggle to find clothes that would actually fit my body. Korea has "free sizes" which are supposed to be one-size-fits-all, but they definitely do not fit all. Most clothes were smaller than an American medium.
I bought a few things, and then we went to a Korean restaurant. It was 8:30pm when we walked in and the restaurant was empty, so we thought it would be a quick, cheap meal before we headed home. The store owner kept asking us to 'hurry up' because of the curfew, so we had to eat fast. But it was yummy at least.
We also may have gotten slightly turned around on our way back home, but we made it back eventually haha.
Tumblr media
Sunday
My co-worker texted me that there is a K-pop event not too far from us and she wants to go. I don't know anything about K-pop but I was down. We decided to take electric scooters.
On every street corner here you can find electric scooters waiting to be rented. With a quick download of an app, you scan the scooter's bar code and can enjoy a ride! It was a really fun and inexpensive way to travel. We went to two cafe giveaways, where you apparently order a particular drink to get some K-pop swag. Ordering was a little bit of a struggle with the language barrier, but we managed it. My co-worker is luckily much more knowledgeable about Korean than I am.
Tumblr media
You might be wondering what I was talking about in my post title, but no it's not clickbait: I really did get pulled over by the cops. On the scooter.
We had also decided to go to a different mall later on, and we took the scooters again. This time, we took a bigger road, and made our way to COEX mall. All of a sudden, a cop car pulls up next to us and asked us to stop. Apparently, it's illegal to ride the scooters 1. on sidewalks (though we had seen others doing this) and 2. without a helmet. They took our drivers' licenses and their eyes bugged when they saw our American cards. We explained we had no idea and we had only just arrived in Korea so they let us go with only a warning. We decided to walk the rest of the way LOL
Unfortunately it was still a bust in terms of clothing sizes at the mall, even at the foreign stores like H&M and Zara. I tried on a 16 in H&M and could not even get the clothes on -- I am usually a 10! And yes, they were supposedly US sizes. I guess it will be only online shopping for me.
Tumblr media
We decided to end the day at a Mexican restaurant, where our language barrier while ordering caused them to only bring us one meal (we had both ordered 2 enchiladas...so they brought us one order of 2 instead of 2 orders of 2). We talked about how embarrassing and rude of us it feels like to stumble so much with Korean, but most people here have been kind to us.
Anyway, it's been a long but fun week. Life here in SK is definitely going to be different, but it's so interesting to experience such new things. Here's hoping the growing pains get easier.
Tumblr media
Until next time,
Grace ~
———————————————————————
Mr. Jeon pinched the bridge of his nose in aggravation, while letting out a small huff of air as he stared at the trembling man before him. The man fiddled with the stacks of paper at his fingertips, and scanned each and every line hoping to find a solution, but every single one seemed to have a flaw within its codes. The numbers were far too low considering the amount of business ideas the company had sold this year. The man gave a short and almost panicked like cough when he noticed how violently Mr. Jeon’s leg was shaking underneath the table. The back of his heels that were repeatedly tapping away at the tiles were driving the man insane, the sound echoing in his brain like it was telling him to watch out for a dangerous situation is headed your way.
Patience for the problem at hand was growing thin in Jeon, too thin for anyone's liking.
If someone doesn't get these numbers corrected there will be hell to pay. Jeon loved to dish out servings of his sadistic like plans to those who were unfortunate enough to cross those boundaries. He'll make sure they receive what’s coming to them no matter what. Sweat was beginning to form in beads upon his employee’s forehead. The sight alone almost made him laugh, since Mr. Jeon knew if he only paid attention a bit more than the problem like this wouldn't have occurred at all.
The mess could have simply been avoid if only he was fucking paying attention for once in his pathetic life. Mr.Jeon's harsh eyes glared burning holes into the poor man temple.
"Rufus, I'm trying to remain professional because I know mistakes happen, but this is utterly ridiculous." He seethed through his teeth. His hands were now clenched before him, his whole demeanor was absolutely furious. You could practically see the smoke shooting out of his ears.
"I'm so sorry! I watched them go over these sets a million times I'm truly, and deeply sorry." Rufus sputtered out, as he frantically shoved his glasses back onto the bridge of nose. The sweat was pooling on his palms, and his pants were almost soaked with how much he's wiped his clammy hands on them. He didn't even give himself a chance to breath when he tried recalculating the numbers by hand.
"Your department better be lucky that these numbers aren't due until tomorrow night." Mr. Jeon spoke calmly. Even though, everything at this moment was completely opposite. He tapped away at the wooden surface of his desk, while Rufus gave a great nod of understanding. "What are you still doing here? Go fix these fucking numbers."
"O-Oh! Right Sir!" Rufus said, gripping tightly at the messed up papers. Not giving a care at this moment as he clenched them all beneath his fist and threw the wrinkled papers into the brown file organizer. A hastily escape was made as he fumbled on his feet to get out of the office completely. His sweaty palms once more giving him trouble as they refused to stay solid against the cold, metal doorknob. Giving it one last tug he yanked the door open swiftly and made his departure, making sure not to look back even as he closed the door.
Rufus could feel the fury clawing around inside of his chest at the thought of that embarrassing moment. The big big boss almost chewed his head off and that's never a good sign. Mr. Jeon will probably now view the department as a failure thus forcing everyone to quit, or he'll simply fire them. Either way the business will find a new management team who could actually keep up with their required task. If he loses his job then he's royal screwed.
"How in the hell did these numbers turn out lower than expected!" Rufus bellowed as he swung open the main door to enter his domain. The frame smacking its self on the nearby wall, gaining everyone’s attention. His sharp eyes stared down each and every employee in that room. Their eyes were cast downwards refusing to meet the eyes of a main who held nothing, but fire in his being. Rufus's demeanor changed within a snap of his fingers ever since he left the main boss' office. He was made out like a fool, and he was gonna make them feel the exact same way. "I don't have all day."
No one said a single word as he waved around the brown file organizer. Everyone shared confused looks between them all. They were for sure those numbers were calculated correctly. All those numbers were the profits the company has made and the numbers were sky rocketing. What happened? That the question that plagued everyone's mind, but no one had any clue as to what the answer might be.
Rufus's eyes finally landed on you. You pondered on the solutions to this problem. It had to happen fast or a lot of people were gonna be in deep trouble. You eyed the brown organizer that was hanging loosely from his grip. It was like a cartoon lightbulb dinged brightly above you head.
That's it, the brown file organizer is not the right one at all! The folder for this year was in a soft blue color. The wheels on your office chair slung you a bit to the right as you raced towards the drawers that held all the recorded numbers. Skimming through each one as briskly as you could. That organizer was here somewhere, it has to be here. No one, including you, could afford to lose this job.
You let out a sigh of relief as your fingers made contact with the plastic material of the organizer. There in all of its blue glory was your ticket to keeping your job, as well as the others. The drawer made a harsh clank as it was abruptly shut. Your heels clicked rapidly against the tiles as you raced against the clock to deliver the precious organizer.
"What is that?" Rufus sighed, motioning towards the blue plastic that was clutched in your painted fingertips.
"These are the correct numbers, you grabbed last years by mistake." You smiled as you tried to gingerly hand it over. Seeing as he would have to take it back up to Mr. Jeon and get them approved. His face quickly flashed from relief to the sinister. "Rufus what's the matter? Are you okay?"
"I was specifically told all the right papers were in this brown organizer! Why the hell do you have a blue one."
The profanity that left his lips without hesitation didn't affect you as it happened so often. Although he's making it seem like it's your fault that he grabbed the wrong one. You never told him to grab the brown one at all, you didn't even tell him which one it was period. This was his mistake, and he's not taking credit for it. It's absolutely pitiful.
"I remember you asking what color was last years and we responded with brown, and then we proceeded to say that this years color was blue." You corrected as you held it out once more. A dry scoff past through his lips as he harshly shoved the organizer into your stomach. "What?"
"Take it up there and explain to him why this mix up even happened. Let's see if you can handle the main boss and his wrath." After he spoke his final words he trudged to his office in the back.
Turning around you noticed everyone's eyes on you. Their sympathetic smiles only hurt you feelings more. You wish you could tell them it was fine, that mistakes happen. Even in a company like this, but with Rufus' new outburst you're afraid to even open you mouth at all.
"L/n! Get going!"
With that command you rushed off in the opposite direction. You tried not to draw that much attention as you walked right up the familiar glass door. When your eyes landed on his laser focused figure your legs grew weak almost giving in, and letting your body fall towards the floor. The thought of him yelling at you, saying you're disturbing him only made you want to race back to your original post and let someone else handle this. This should be Rufus after all not you.
You banged on the glass as lightly as you could and waited for his eyes to at least glance at the door. When it didn't happen you almost took that as your chance to bolt back downstairs. You’d just have to make up a lame excuse and say he was busy or not in his office at the moment.
"Rufus where - " Mr. Jeon stopped dead in his words when he noticed a more feminine looking figure in the other side of the glass. No gray hair, but a full colored one, no nasty black dress pants, but smooth legs connected to a very fitted pencil skirt. He could honestly say he was really enjoyed the view.
You tried to calm your breathing as you pushed open the door to let it swing open fully. The moment your entire body was in full view Mr. Jeon physically felt the breath leave his body. He was astonished at the person who was standing before him, he's never seen someone so breathtakingly beautiful. For the first time in his whole laugh he couldn’t muster up the rights words to say.
"Mr. Jeon I'm so sorry if I’m interrupting, but Rufus sent me with the correct numbers this time. Would you like to go over them?"
The way his name fell from your lips was sending the poor man in a full on spiral. His world felt like it was beginning to take a new form. A new form that was making him feel something he's never felt before, and he was now determined to keep this feeling alive and blooming. This was the one thing he was going to nurture like no tomorrow and make sure you're always by his side. All he needed was for you to agree and it was gonna be a piece of cake, hopefully.
All he needed was your name, and then he could get his hands on anything he needed to make you his.
"Oh you're not interrupting at all, but who are you?" His voice was filled with curiosity and you could actually understand it. The two of you have never formally met considering it was Rufus who hired you to work underneath him.
"Oh! I'm Y/n L/n, I work in the marketing department." You smiled as you extended a hand. What surprised you the most was how gently he took your hand into his. Like it was make of tender glass and if anything touched it, it would shatter into a million pieces. You've heard so many stories about how this man was as ruthless and conniving as they come. Yet here he is treating a stranger like they’re a delicate rose that needed strong protection and a gentle hand to do the protecting.
"I'm sorry we haven't formally met, but better late then never right, but let's see those numbers." He smiled as he gestured to the seat in front of him. That smile grew a bit wider when he noticed you pull the chair a bit closer. While doing this your body was leaned forward and when his eyes noticed your cleavage that was peeking out through the small dip in your shirt, his breath hitched. Purple suits her, oh god I bet that color would suit my floor even better.
"Are you okay, Mr. Jeon?" You questioned when the legs of the chair were finally sturdy against the tiles. Your caring eyes were full of concern as you stared at him. No sick motive behind you words, just genuine and honest concern.
"Of course don't worry about me, now back to these numbers."
Your fingers skimmed the lines of number that were printed onto the page. Making sure to note which numbers corresponded with which sales for that period. This company truly was a force to be reckoned with. Since it easily became one of the richest and most powerful companies within a few years. All that progress was made possible by the CEO Jeon Jungkook.
"Miss. l/n can I have a little bit more of your time before you go, I have an important question I need to ask you." He asked while you began to stand up and gather the correct numbered papers and neatly placed them into the empty folds of the organizer.
"Of course, Mr. Jeon. What is it?"
"How does Rufus treat his workers, is he as good of a boss as he claims to be?" He asked while intertwining his hands and leaning forwards on his desk. His eyebrows raised and his head tilted just slightly. The hesitation in your answer made his hands tighten ever so slightly. "How does he treat everyone? I need an answer."
"I mean he treats us good, but usually tries to rush things."
"Miss L/n, I don't appreciate when I'm being lied to straight to myself face. Now I'm gonna ask you one more time. What is his attitude back in that department like?" Mr. Jeon snapped. Just as before he was losing his patience, he needed this answer desperately. He finally wanted a reason to cut Rufus off at the knees and watch him crumble at the thought of losing the one thing that is keeping him afloat.
"He used to be really understanding and such, but now he rushes us and then proceeds to pile work-load upon work-load on us. He's agitated all the time and never sees anything as his fault it's always someone else's." You confessed as you fiddled with the hem of your blouse. Acting like the small, black button on the bottom was the most important thing in the world.
"Thank you for your cooperation and if you’re interested in a new swag from Rufus I’m almost positive I have a few new openings.” He added before you started walking out the door. His eyes lingering a bit longer on parts of your body that those eyes shouldn’t be looking at.
"I'll see if I can come by later, thank you Mr. Jeon."
"You're welcomed and you can call me Jungkook from now on."
You gave a small nod and quickly made your way out the door. Jungkook smiled like he has just seen the gates of heaven, but just the mere thought of you was more endearing than heaven itself. A dazzling smile had graced his face. He could feel a warm sensation taking over his body as he watched you walk down the end of the hallway and disappear into the crowds of people that flooded the office halls. When he was for certain that no one was going to bother him he quickly rolled around to his computer.
His sharp fingers typing at rapid speed against the white keyboard. Dozens of searches popping up, but none matching the description of the one person he needed. A groan of disapproval was lodged in his throat as nothing was coming up. Your file was somehow hidden from his view. His nails dug indents into the palms of his hands since his grip was iron tight. He needed to keep his temper under control he couldn’t afford to cause a scene on his office and have people rushing in.
He couldn’t afford to let people see his darling on his computer when you were supposed to he for his eyes only.
A small ding alerted him of a new notification. A new file had finally been added to the company database. By the grace of god that file was none other then yours. That beautiful face adoring his computer made his heart swell with endless amounts of joy. He had what he wanted at his fingertips.
He was gonna learn everything about you and all he needed to do was a click a few tabs. It may seem strange with his sudden infatuation with someone he just met, but he couldn’t help it. It was like a breath of fresh air watching you take timid steps through that door. Your honey like voice sounding like music to his ears and he wanted to keep that tune on repeat forever.
He wanted you forever.
When he fully closed out the tabs he raked his mind for possible positions he could place you in. The front desk was too far away and your intelligence would simply be wasted. When the thought of you being right by side crossed his mind there was no going back. The decision was already set in stone with or without your say so.
"I'll see you tomorrow my darling." He spoke in a gravelly voice. A sinister smile grazing his face at thought of you finally being his. This time his plans won’t fail, you’re not gonna end up like the last one. You are far superior then all of the others combined.
This time you were not gonna get away.
                                   —————
You didn’t like the unpleasant feeling that was flowing through your veins. The way his eyes went from kind and caring to stone hard within a snap of a finger gave you chills. He was determined to get the truth out of you and you gave into the pressure and completely caved. The air in that room felt suffocating and when you finally reached the step out of that office the air had finally came back into your lifeless like body. You scurried down the hall as fast as your heel clad feet could carry you.
You rushed to your cubicle as you placed yourself within its confinements. Genuine worrying filling you up once more as you thought back the encounters. His longing stares that stayed on you a bit too long to his hands that somehow kept brushing up against yours. The feeling felt foreign, strange and unwanted. The way his mood would swing from left to right left you drowning in concern.
The right thing was to just stay in your department and keep you distance. Somehow you still doubt he'll let you off that easy, but god you wish he would. You should never have said you’d come by to talk about the other job opportunities.
"Hey it's time to lock up." Lori shook your shoulders lightly pulling you away from your terror like thoughts. Her soft smile providing a little reassurance as to what just happened. No matter what you still can't shake that feeling that something is gonna go wrong. Usually your gut feelings are right, but this time you wish it was just an upset stomach.
"Oh yeah I'll meet you at the car I just gotta use the bathroom."
"Okay don't be too slow I want to stop and get something to eat." She yelled as she got further down the hallway. Until all that was seen was the shadow she casted on the dimly lit hallway.
The familiar ding of your phone flashed the notification that your file was added to the database. They let everyone know when they were added due to the fact that employees had a right to know when their information was uploaded on any sort of database. This also came with the perks that everyone was update when their profile was being viewed.
Oh god, that same feeling of dread overtook your body like a tsunami.
He had viewed it. Probably from top to bottom, taking in as much information as his eyes would allow. He has accessed your phone number, you education and your fucking address. Everything was now at his grimy fingertips. Maybe this was gonna be a lot more dangerous then you thought. You tried to play if off as fluke, as him seeing you for the first time and was just wondering around it. The whole air of the situation felt sinister and you just couldn't stop it.
Your eyes darted left to right in a panic making sure he wasn't lurking behind the curve of the halls. Your heart was beating too loud for you to hear properly. Those cool, metal keys were clutched between your fingers as you took shaky steps down too the parking garage. Without falling you didn't waste time to yank open Lori's car door.
"Wow honey, looks like you've seen a ghost.you must’ve peed quickly." Lori snickered as she held out her hands for the keys and then she began to pull the car out of park. Her eyes trained on the numerous vehicles behind her car.
"Oh me? Yeah I'm...fine. Turns out I didn’t have to.” You said, taking a shaky breath. Your fingers quickly pressed the lock located on the right side of the door. The paranoia jumping out in your obvious actions. “Would if he weird to the main boss to view your profile?”
You saw her eyebrows go up as she pondered on the thought. Her acrylics tapping away at the wheel. “Well it all depends. If you’re talking about today then it’s probably fine, because keep in mind you just joined a few weeks ago. So don’t worry about it.”
You felt you shoulders lose the tension inside them. The shaky breaths that you were making you light headed finally were under control. A small smile grazed your face as you rubbed you temples. A gracious thank you passed through you lips when you got out of Lori’s car. An overwhelming feeling of security lingered on your body when the latch on the door was finally hooked.
You’re finally away from that place, you’re finally away from him. No need to watch over you shoulder to hide from his presence, no need to wonder if he’s lurking behind a corner.
The clothes that were restricted against you body felt like heaven coming off. Your bare skin was loving the feeling of cool breeze against it. You couldn’t wait for the scorching hot water to bless you skin once more.
“Hello?” You questioned, uncertainty laced throughout the word. Your eyebrows rose in confusion when the caller gave a heavy cough on the other line. You gave a shaky breathe as you tried to recollected yourself. “Mr.Jeon?”
“Oh! Yeah I’m sorry, but I was just calling to see when you wanted to schedule that meeting of sorts?” He questioned, his voice seemed like it was caught in his throat. Like he was all chocked up. “Are you busy right now?”
“Sorta, maybe it would be best if we called back later and try to arrange something?” You spoke. You were desperately trying to get out of this call as quickly as humanly possible.
“Yeah, I hope you have a good night, y/n.”
You didn’t even bother with a response as you quickly clicked the red button on the bottom of the screen. The damn phone number section had to be required on that stupid form. Right now you’re wishing you could just drop the job all together. Bills don’t pay themselves though.
You wish the hot water would wash all your worries away. That when you stepped foot outside the tub that everything would go back to normal, but that stuff seems to only happen in the movies. You hair was standing up on the back of you neck, and you just wanted these foolish feelings to evaporate with the steam that was clouding your body.
When you finally stepped out the shower you were quick to wrap the green towel around you vulnerable body. When you back was turned towards small window you couldn’t held the feelings that overtook your body.
“Stop acting like a fucking coward.” You grumbled to yourself as you slid a shirt over you sticky, wet shoulders. “Everything is gonna be fine.”
No matter how many times you repeated that phrase to yourself that night, your mind still raced with endless amount of possibilities.
Maybe this wasn’t gonna fine, maybe this was the start of something more sinister and dangerous then anyone could have imagined.
And maybe your mind was right.
What do I have in common with Superstorm Sandy?
"Why should I care?"
You will learn my superhero, mutagen, backstory.
Most importantly, I'll help you realize your self-worth if you are culturally mismatched and how these may wreck your career path.
This year would mark 9 years since I graduated from NC A&T. I have come to many conclusions since then: particularly, how to forged my career path and why it took so long to accept my talents. I want my story to help you on their journey.
Tumblr media
The year was 2012. I had just obtained my Engineering degree after 6 years of hard work, study abroad excursions, and University research expeditions. I would have probably still been at A&T doing Climate Research with the University of Minnesota if I hadn't elected to graduate.
However, it was promptly after the economic downturn. All of my prospects had dried up. Time Warner Cable, while they had appreciated my work, the company had overturned. No one left working there even remembered who I was, never mind how valuable my engineering, production manuals had been. I had pursued patent writing at the US Patent Office in Alexandria, VA, but no one ever followed up with me. It was a dismal time.
Cultural Mismatch: An Aversion to North Carolina
I was living with my parents after 6 years of living abroad, living out of state, and generally just being independent. However, I was severely culturally mismatched. Here is why--
Eden, NC, is composed of retirees with very few economic opportunities for locals. Staying there would have been a lethal financial decision. Additionally, there was virtually no support from the community for people who want to advance.
Eden is a dilapidated Company Town. The city was designed to serve only one company. If you do not fit into the company, there is no job for you. Therefore, Eden's company NEVER hired anyone within my family's zip code. Even if candidates have the expertise, they did not see value in the community. They only saw economical (cheap) standards of living for their workers. To make matters worse, Eden's only company was starting to move out of the city in 2012.
After my time abroad, out of state, and out of the community, I had accumulated values that no one around me could appreciate. While this may sound pig-headed, in this case, it's a practical observation. I had become fluent in Korean, among other things. No one in Eden, NC, could appreciate that. They certainly couldn't fit that skill into their office.
Given my situation, I vowed to move away from North Carolina as soon as possible.
In the meantime, I attempted to salvage my financial situation. I created a freelancing account on Elance, now Upwork. However, 9 years ago, it allowed professionals from India and China to compete with people in the U.S. While someone in India can afford to edit a manuscript for pennies on the hour, I could not.
As an effect, I gained the bad habit of devaluing my work. After the US Patent Office ghosted me, it was a huge blow to my self-worth. Combined with being isolated at my parent's place in a community I had zero connection with, I became desperate for any chance to get away.
By Halloween 2012, I was moving to New York with some family. After living in a metropolitan, world city like Seoul, South Korea, moving to New York seemed like a cure for my cultural displacement. We had a place in Brooklyn, and we were set. I was sure I'd have better luck and find more people to appreciate me in New York.
The Unusual Path of Superstorm Sandy
Superstorm Sandy would hit Brooklyn and the rest of New York a day later. What made the storm so unusual is that it didn't follow the path of usual storms. Let me explain.
The North Carolina Outerbanks juts out far into the Atlantic, serving as a barrier for most of the east coast. Hurricanes naturally go out to the Atlantic after visiting the Outerbanks. It's why New York, New Jersey, and most other states on the East Coast above North Carolina never saw any storms. This is why Jersey Shore (was) such a thing. The entirety of New York City is on a collection of islands out in the bay with 10 to 20-story skyscrapers as the norm.
Meanwhile, North Carolina gets storms so often, the people there know not to build anything on our beaches. We have horrific riptides that will drag you out into the ocean-- and this is on a regular day. There is a huge chance that a whole hurricane will come and tear through your little beach house like a toddler on a rampage. This chance has increased 10-fold with global warming and more active Hurricane seasons.
The North Carolina Outerbanks belong to the birds and wildlife. It's for the best.
Albeit, it seems Superstorm Sandy shares this sentiment. Sandy clipped the Outerbanks and veered right for New York and New Jersey. Subways flooded, property was destroyed, and the Jersey boardwalk till this day is a shadow of its former self.
For my sister and me, that meant that we were no longer moving to Brooklyn. I wouldn't get to New York City until 2013. We settled for an overpriced apartment in Washington Heights.
When I arrived, the job prospects were even lower after a 100-year storm like Superstorm Sandy. After 6 years of getting my engineering degree, I was reduced to temp-work. While I talked about my engineering, design, and rendering experience, people asked me for Excel spreadsheets. Despite moving up the seaboard, I still couldn't find anyone who could appreciate my skills and experience. It was a frustrating time.
When I did settle for underemployment, companies strung me along. They would promise to hire me permanently but only kept me on for projects. I had to learn how to minimize myself to make rent (I wasn't very good at it). However, I did learn a lot about how to serve.
My Mutagen: Navigating Bureaucracy for the Good of the People
One of my favorite assignments was helping people after Superstorm Sandy. One would think people who have lost everything would be inconsolable. However, on the whole, these New Yorkers were strong and gracious.
I learned a lot about reliance from them while filing their paperwork. Many families were devastated by water damage, mold, and loss of life in some cases. Yet, they would still have just about everything they needed for FEMA. If they didn't, listening to people's stories gave them the motivation to come back the next day to get what they need.
I got a chance to work in Staten Island and Coney Island. I would spend hours on the train or on the ferry, just to help old ladies scan through legalese to get what they needed. Most importantly, I found out I could do it quickly. In the Summer of 2013, I helped about 100 families get their FEMA assistance. While I was essentially a (secretary) with an Engineering degree, I was an efficient one. I could find loopholes and clauses to help people get what they need. I developed a system to make it better. More importantly, I learned how to navigate New York Bureaucracy and do it with agile precision. It was temporary, but I took many qualities with me that I still use to this day.
Discovering your Mutagen: Are you Culturally Mismatched?
There is a lot of talk about "following your passion" when you first graduate. There was, certainly, when I had graduated in 2012. However, what good are your passions if they don't elevate other people? Do your passions really validate how you think the world should be?
As individuals, we have much more power than we realize. This power is increased tenfold when we team up with people who have the same values as we do. Even when you feel like you are alone, when you are convicted and stand up for what you believe in, this impacts the people around us. If you put in the work can attract people who have the same values as you.
Stick around. My next blog will explore the effects of "cultural mismatch" in more detail!
Until then--
Stay Determined
mmm yanno what, there was this photo of calum going round in this really cute jacket, ill have to send you the photo if you haven't seen it (he's also wearing a turtle neck). but back to my point. stealing that jacket from him every now and then cause it looks super cute on you, but calum being SO fed up with you taking it, so he fucks you in it.
Tumblr media
(this is the image in case you haven't seen it) (also sorry ollie, i tried a masc reader and it kept coming out super funky)
when calum first bought the jacket, you were stunned at how attractive and professional he looked. you were used to the band shirts and skinny jeans, and suddenly its switch to suit jackets and leather boots, not that you're complaining. you just felt a bit out of his league, as you were still in t-shirt and ripped skinny jeans.
it started off as a joke, you were looking for a new job, and complaining about the lack of professional clothes in your closet, when cal offhandedly stated, “well you could just use mine.” he chuckled, going back to plucking out a new bassline, but you stood there, intrigued by the idea. while he wasn't paying attention, you moved to his side of the closet, pulling the jacket off the hanger, and shrugging it on over a plain white top and nice black jeans.
as you looked in the mirror, you smile widely, loving the outcome of your outfit. asking cal to borrow it, he nods, not looking up from his work. the following day, cal was in the studio before you even woke up, though he left a note wishing you luck on your interview. you got ready, throwing the jacket on to top it off, and rushed out the door, nervous but excited.
the interview was a success and you were established at your new office within the week. it had a more strict dress code, warranting a shopping spree, though you still continued to borrow his jacket. it seemed as though every time you did, something good happened; whether it was someone paying for your coffee, a presentation gone well, or getting kudos from the big boss himself.
after a couple months of his jacket going missing, calum was fed up. he knew you were borrowing it, though he never knew when, so multiple times he ended up with a different outfit than planned, all because of that fucking jacket. you walked into the house as he was grumbling, tossing your keys into the bowl by the door and calling out for him. stumbling into the bedroom while taking off your shoes, you failed to notice him standing at the end of the bed, with arms crossed and a frown on his face. when you looked up, you were startled at his disgruntled state.
“whats wrong cal? bad day at the studio?”
he replied grumpily, “what's wrong is that yet again, you're wearing my jacket babe. I love it when you wear my stuff, but NOT when I need it!”
you were slightly offended, though you knew he was right, and that you should've asked. but after a long day, where your ‘lucky jacket’ didn't work, you weren't about to deal with calum’s pissy attitude.
“god calum, calm down, it's not that big of a deal. I won't borrow your shit anymore, but maybe Luke will let me borrow his jackets.”
immediately, you knew that was the wrong thing to say. granted, you wanted to piss him off, but not nearly to this level.
he slowly walked closer to you, mimicking you as you stepped backward, until you were against the wall with him looming over you.
“wrong move sweetheart, I'm going to have to teach you a lesson.”
 he grabbed your chin, tilting your head up to trap your lips in a searing kiss, while running his free hand through your hair. you whimpered into the kiss, moving your hands as if to grab his shoulder, when he took both of yours in his, pinning them against the wall next to your head. suddenly, he stepped back, running his thumb against his lower lip as he looked at you.
“you're going to do as I say, without question. strip everything but the jacket.”
you went to protest, but with a hard glare, you silently did as told. taking off the jacket for a moment, you quickly stripped of everything, including your underwear, before sliding back into the soft, black fabric.
calum observed you, before walking behind you. as you were about to speak up, you felt his warm breath wash over your neck, causing a shiver to run up your spine. he chuckled lowly, before starting to sponge wet kisses along the column of your neck and move his hand along your stomach to your wetness. tilting your head to the side for more access, you whined when he stepped back, before he suddenly pushed on your back, bending you over the edge of the bed with your hands moving up to support your torso.
“if you’re so insistent on wearing my things, next time remember how well you were fucked in this. when your boss compliments you, I hope you think of how loud you were screaming my name.”
he ground himself against your entrance, relishing in your needy moans, before stepping back to quickly rid himself of clothing. he trailed a finger up your wetness, before quickly pumping it in, chuckling as you immediately started to unravel.
“cal, please. I need you. fuck me in your coat, make it so we both remember.” you groaned, head thrown back in pleasure.
moaning lowly, he retracted his hand, smearing the wetness on his hand along his length before lining himself up. as he pushed in, he bent over, mouthing along your neck as you took a moment to adjust. giving him the okay, he adjusted his stance before anchoring a hand on your hip and setting a brutal pace.
the coat was becoming stifling, the heat of the room and your body becoming too much in the best way. your head hung low as you rolled your hips to match his thrusts. the room echoed with the sounds of skin slapping against skin and the moans responding to each other.
tapping his bicep to get his attention, he came to a stop, mouth opening to ask if you were alright. you smirked before quickly pulling him onto the bed and rolling on top, before kneeling to line yourself up once more.
you sank down, moaning at the full feeling, setting a slower, but harder pace. calum gripped your hips with a bruising strength, encouraging you from below.
“you look so good baby, feel so good on me. so tight and warm, fucking made for me pretty girl. ride me, harder, cmon. i know you wanna cum.”
whining, you moved to lay against his chest, biting at the muscle along his shoulder. he shuddered at the feeling, planting his feet against the mattress to thrust up into you, his pace starting to stutter as you both drew near to your highs. cal shoved a hand between your torsos, rubbing at your clit. he groaned at the feeling of you clenching around him.
“are you close baby girl? you gotta cum for me. come on, show me how good I make you feel.”
his quiet encouragements tipped you over the edge, turning your face into the crook of his neck as you feel him release. he continues to thrust, riding out both of your orgasms.
you roll to the side, curling up under the crook of his arm, basking in the afterglow until you start giggling. you feel him shift, looking at you curiously until you answer his unspoken question,
“we can never wear this jacket again without being reminded of this being the only thing I'm wearing.”
calum huffs out a laugh, burying his face in your hair. he stayed quiet for a minute before mumbling,
“that's not necessarily a bad thing..”
you know i started this as a smutty prompt but apparently, my ass only knows how to write fics so rip
However, Ralph Lauren's primary objective has remained to make the quintessential American look, together with clothing he designs. He created the costumes for a couple of major films in the 1970s: "The Great Gatsby" (1973), and "Annie Hall" (1978). Ralph Lauren's goal isn't generate "fashion" as such. Instead, his mission might be to create clothes that might described as "timeless classics." Such clothing doesn't go out-of-style from one fashion season to the subsequent.
Jeff Slate: So I'm of course curious concerning story behind Long Wave, but I'm intrigued on your revisiting the ELO material too. As i listen to those new ELO recording just sound dazzling. They still retain that magic that they had when When i first heard them as a kid, nevertheless voice sounds phenomenal and it is also really well recorded, that this sounds maybe better as compared to old days, and it will do seem like from a producers standpoint that you've taken might help to prevent knew back when you made the original records and imbued the actual recordings with 30 years worth of expertise. So let's talk about the ELO record and good reason.
