Chapter 2: Home Sweet Home
Klaus was trying his best to hide his amusement but was finding it increasingly difficult. He was in the back of the SUV with his twin whilst his sister and friend were in the front. He knew that Pia wouldn’t enjoy her time in the vehicle but she was acting as though she had been placed inside of a bomb. Despite there not being a wide space in the back of the SUV, she managed to find new positions each time something upset her. It was quite laughable that one of the most powerful creatures in existence was currently glaring at the leather interior like it had offended her. A low growl exited her throat as she felt the amusement of her twin float through their bond. He immediately hushed her and offered his hand to pull her into his embrace.
Pia didn't understand the 21st century.
She didn't like what she didn't understand.
It made her feel weak.
Her fingers suddenly dug into Klaus’ shirt as she peered over his shoulder at another automobile that had loud music blaring from its open windows. Thankfully the back windows of the SUV were blacked out so no one could witness the girl's misery. She could hear the fast beating hearts of the four gentlemen - if they could be considered gentlemen - as they shouted obscenities at a car ahead of them. Dark veins appeared under her eyes as she tried to fight off her hunger for what felt like the hundredth time. Her fingers tapped in unison with their heartbeats as she got lost in their rhythm. If this was what humanity had become, then Pia would not find it difficult to eat each and every one of them. Niklaus stroked his hand through her hair to calm her until her fangs retracted once again. She let out a disgruntled sigh and narrowed her eyes at the stupid humans before locking eyes with her brother.
"I am hungry."
"I know; you shall feed again once we arrive back at the manor. Then when you're a little more settled we shall go on a run." Klaus kept his voice quiet since Pia seemed to jump at every little sound she heard whilst they travelled. A small part of him clung onto this vulnerable side of her since he knew that once they stopped moving and she was out of the confinement of the vehicle, her rage would take over. There would be no telling how she would react, but he knew that nothing good was going to come out of it until she forgave him. He was physically prepared for her wrath, but his emotions felt a little more frail than usual. The thought of her anger made him falter. Was that regret he felt? He supposed it was, but nothing could undo his actions, and so he would manage whatever she threw at him as best as he could. This wasn’t the first time he’d faced a freshly woken sibling after all.
Caroline, who still felt awkward and slightly betrayed as Klaus looked at Pia in a way that he had never looked at her, stayed silent and glanced back at the pair in the rear-view mirror. Pia had dug her heels into Klaus' thighs and clung onto his shoulders; his hands stroked through her hair slowly as they stared into each other's eyes. This must have been what Rebekah had spoken about. Neither of them spoke and just kept eye contact for the remainder of the journey.
After what seemed like an age to Pia, the SUV slowed to a halt in front of the Mikaelson residence; Kol and Elijah immediately exited through the front door once seeing the car come to a stop. Caroline moved over to the side whilst Rebekah ran into Elijah's awaiting arms; the emotion had finally gotten to her and she couldn't stop the tears of joy as she knew their family was finally back together. Klaus stepped out of the vehicle first; he glanced around at his hybrids that stood to attention and took a deep breath before moving to the side and stretching out his hand. Pia slipped out of the vehicle with an otherworldly grace and quickly released Klaus once she felt comfortable on her feet. Her brow was furrowed as she stared at the mansion in front of her. It was just like Niklaus to make a statement like this. The house screamed wealth and prosperity.
"I'll leave you to it.” Caroline murmured, flinching as Pia’s head slightly moved in her direction. She didn’t like the predatory look in the hybrid’s eyes. It meant nothing but trouble.
"Goodbye, Caroline." Klaus barely glanced at her as he kept his gaze on his mate. Pia took a deep breath to try and calm herself before walking past each of her siblings without a second glance. She slowly made her way into the house and stopped. There were so many antiques and expensive artefacts, but the modern elements threw her off balance a little.
'I don't like it...’
She entered the lounge and ran her hand along the soft sofa with a grimace. Everything looked wrong. Everything smelt wrong. The grandfather clock ticked at the wrong pace and the sound of the hybrids patrolling the grounds made her wince as though they were stomping right beside her.
It was all just wrong.
‘I hate it...
‘I. Hate. It.
‘HATE...
‘HATE...
‘HATE!'
"I hate it all!" Pia screamed and began rampaging through the living space. Klaus and his siblings raced into the room and were shocked to find her destroying whatever she could get her hands on. Within a second the coffee table was flying across the room and crashing against the wall. The mirror above the fireplace crashed to the ground as Pia let out a fierce roar of displeasure. Kol ignored the warning he felt in Niklaus' stare and vamped forwards; he caught her exhausted body before she met the floor. Her hands shook and the priceless vase in her grasp was reduced to jagged pieces of pottery as she lost her grip. Tears poured down her cheeks and her fangs came forward from all of the emotions that were racking through her body at this moment. “It’s too much.” Kol kept his arm tight across Pia’s stomach and pressed soft kisses to the top of her head.
“Let it out.” He spoke gently in her ear, knowing exactly how overwhelming it felt to be surrounded by unfamiliar territory. “Just let it out.” He encouraged the angry tears that fell down her cheeks. Pia didn't know what to do with all of the information that she had gained over the last couple of hours. It was too much for her, Kol knew that. "Darling, calm down for me."
Niklaus froze at the sight of his twin; he felt anger and jealousy at the fact that Kol had gotten to her first, but then again, the sheer magnitude of pain that was coming from her made him unable to move. It felt like someone had driven a stake through his heart and was wriggling it about. Rebekah placed her hand on his arm as she tried to contain her own sadness in an effort to stay strong for Nik who was obviously devastated at the sight before them. “She’ll be okay. We’ll make it okay.” She murmured helplessly as she watched her beautiful sister become nothing more than a shaking heap.
Elijah bit down on his tongue to stop himself from saying something that would only make the current situation worse. He was furious with Niklaus. Finn had died hating them, partially because of their unnatural existence, but also because of how he had been left neutralised for so long. God forbid Pia would get sucked into her own darkness and force them to do something to take care of her as well because of Niklaus' actions.
"I hate it, Kol... it's not right... none of this is right..." Pia was almost hysterical and tried to fight against her brother's strong grip but found herself unable to do more than hit her fists against his chest. She was starving. She needed to feed so that hopefully all of these emotions would go away. Blood or alcohol, either would do. Anything to lessen the pain she was currently flooded with.
"I shall bring you some blood." Elijah muttered before disappearing to the kitchen. He returned with five blood bags which were promptly snatched from his hands and devoured by Pia. They weren’t warm and there wasn’t a pulse, but it was good enough for now. It was like a flashback to the night she was daggered; blood covered her mouth and stained her nightgown once she was finished. Her face was blank as she ripped herself away from her younger brother, the empty blood bags dropping to her feet as she straightened herself with unnatural poise. Her tears had now dried and she was still enough that one might mistake her for a statue.
"I wish to go outside for a while.”
"Do you want-"
"I shall be alone." Elijah bowed his head and looked at his younger sister for a moment.
"I hope you find something to calm yourself, Pia." Elijah bowed his head once more before leaving to go to the library of the house. If she went where he thought she would, then he would be able to observe her discreetly.
Klaus found himself wanting to follow her but saw both of his younger siblings blocking his way. They gave a sharp shake of their head and Rebekah stepped forward to push him towards the stairs. “Go to your art room… paint something… just… leave her be for a while.” Every part of him screamed to move the obstacle and join his mate, but Rebekah gave another firm push to his shoulder and he robotically made his way to the staircase. He felt lost. For the first time since becoming a hybrid, he felt his control slip away.
With a short nod Pia exited the manor and glanced around. She could see multiple hybrids milling around the area causing her to tense up; glances were thrown at her but she shot them down with a glare and carried on letting her feet guide her. Pia found herself drawn to an old tree that grew in the gardens and rested herself against it. As she stared up at the shining stars she finally felt at peace. She’d always enjoyed the nights when the skies were the clearest and the moon was the brightest. It felt like all was right in the world and that nothing could touch her. There had been many times during summer when the nights were the lightest that Esther had had to send the boys out to bring her inside otherwise she’d have remained under the watchful gaze of the moon until morning time. Even when her wolf was asleep, she’d always felt a connection to the pale celestial body.
---
Her blonde hair moved softly in the breeze as she stretched her legs out in front of her and enjoyed the feel of the moonlight hitting her skin. The simple sensation of sitting outside on the grass made her feel free. She watched as birds flew overhead and sang to one another. She envied them for just being able to spread their wings and fly at a moment’s notice. Oh, how she wished she could just fly away without a care in the world.
“Pia… It’s been an hour since you came out here.” Rebekah approached her sister carefully, unsure of how she would react. Pia blinked but did not move. “I have drawn you a bath.”
“I do not want a bath.” Rebekah exhaled and knelt down slowly. She put a gentle hand on her sister’s back and nodded slowly.
“Okay, well, you have been in that coffin for 5 centuries, I think it would be beneficial if you bathed and changed into something fresh. You would feel better, I promise.”
“A simple bath will not make a difference to how I feel.” Pia muttered quietly, despite the sound of scalding hot water soaking over her skin seeming very appealing. “I want to sit here. Alone.”
“I will not let anyone come near you. It would be just us, like we used to. You can soak yourself and I will deal with your hair… I’ll braid it, like old times.” The sisters smiled at the memories; one of their favourite bonding practices was braiding each other’s hair.
“No one else?” Pia asked to confirm.
“Nik will stay away for now. It will be just you and I.” A soft smile grew on Bekah’s face as her sister slowly stood up and motioned for her to lead the way
The soft trickling of water filled the silence. Rebekah knelt beside the bathtub and carefully ran a wide tooth comb through her sister's freshly conditioned hair. She kept opening her mouth to speak but found no words would come out. She didn't know what to say.
What was there to say?
I'm sorry that I didn't find you sooner?
Pia sat in the warm water and rested her chin on her knees. She could feel Rebekah's need to speak, but didn't acknowledge it. Instead she stared at the shining silver taps of the bathtub and glared at her reflection. Her fingernails dug into her skin as she pushed down the burning urge in her throat to slaughter. She just felt so hungry... or was it anger? She couldn't tell. It was easier to just ignore whatever the feeling was and remain silent.
"There." Rebekah put down the comb and used her supernatural speed to braid the curls out of her sister’s face. "All done. Do you want to get out now? The water must be getting cold."
"I want to be alone."
"Pia, I don-"
"I want to be alone." Pia interjected and tensed her shoulders until she heard the door quietly open and close. The sound of Rebekah's steps away from the bathroom echoed in her head. Every sound seemed amplified. Pia almost wanted to rip her ears off so that everything would just be quiet for a moment. After 500 years in that box, all of this noise was grating on her fragile nerves.
Did everything have to be so loud in this century?
Her head snapped to the side to glare at the door as someone turned on some music in a room nearby…
The dripping of the bathtub tap…
The sound of Rebekah’s heels downstairs…
The clink of a glass being placed on a surface…
Niklaus scratching charcoal on paper…
A car leaving the grounds…
Her wolf howling in the back of her mind…
Her own heartbeat…
"Just shut up!" With a hiss her fangs descended and she plunged them into her arm. Blood poured from the deep wounds but she carried on digging her teeth into her skin in an effort to distract herself. A relieved moan left her lips as she focused on the copper tang of her own blood filling her mouth; she felt like a baby who’s teeth were just growing and was in need of something to just numb the pain.
"Pia!" Klaus burst into the bathroom after the scent of her blood had invaded his senses. He froze as the bathwater had turned a pale pink and his sister's head turned to where he stood; her fangs were still embedded in her skin as rivers of red flowed down her forearm. As he tried to step forward she quickly released her arm and hissed. She didn't want anyone near her right now. She didn't know what she would do to them. She just wanted everything to stop. Nik raised his hands in a gesture of peace and glanced at where the wound on her arm was steadily closing. "Are you alright?”
"Leave me be." Pia murmured and rested her head against her knee suddenly exhausted.
"I know it must be hard." Niklaus knelt down beside his sister and kept a close eye on her. He wouldn't leave her alone to harm herself again. "Everything must be so difficult to comprehend... but please, don't push Rebekah away. She only wants to help."
"Every time she opens her mouth... I want to rip off her head. She wants to apologise. She wants to heal my wounds. She wants to hold my hand... I can't stand it!" Pia stood up slowly and stepped out of the tub. She wrapped a towel around herself before turned to face her brother who still remained on his knees. "I can't stand any of you currently. No one came to get me. Everybody left me." Klaus felt his heart break a little more as she left him alone beside the tub. Their bond felt weaker than ever. They used to describe it as a little caterpillar that wriggled inside both of their chests. He could barely feel it now. He remembered how fractured it felt on the night that she had been daggered; the caterpillar had become a snake that constricted around his heart. He'd even take that over the nothingness that consumed him now.
Pia slammed her bedroom door shut with a huff and ripped open the wardrobe; her eyes scanned all of the clothes but she was at a loss. What did nightwear look like these days? A throat cleared from behind her and she saw a hand offering up a soft material. She snatched it quickly and was happy to find it was a long-sleeved dress that reached just above her knees. It was less fabric than she was used to but it appeared to be something to sleep in.
"What a glorious performance." Kol reclined on her bed, his eyes were glued to his phone but his focus had been on the tense argument he had just heard. Pia grumbled to herself and climbed onto the silk sheets.
"I am so glad you are entertained." She collapsed onto the bedding, her back turned to her brother as she tried to ignore him.
"Sister..." Kol placed his phone on her bedside table and moved over to the blonde; his arm curled around her waist and he ignored her low growl as he pulled her back to his chest. "It's okay to be angry. I have been daggered countless times, if you recall?" He snickered as she stiffened in his grasp.
"I always tried to get to you. Do not throw that in my face. Don't you remember how many times my neck was broken when you were daggered and I couldn't find you?" The pair had always had a strong bond, even as humans they always fought for each other. It had broken Pia's heart every time when Klaus had daggered Kol and refused to tell her where his body was.
"I tried to find you, I swear it."
"I believe you." Was all she said in response. "You can leave now."
"I think I'll stay." Kol scoffed as he felt the force in which she rolled her eyes. He softly nuzzled the top of her head and smiled as her small hand found the one around her waist and gripped tightly.
"I'm scared that this is a dream and I'll be back in that box again."
"Whilst I am walking alongside you, I'll never let you go back into that box." Kol shifted a little and Pia looked perplexed as he produced a little square device in his hands, she moved her head away when the screen began to light up. She felt Kol’s chest rumble against her back as he laughed. “This, little pea, is a tablet… and it is going to help you catch up on 500 years of history.”

I just ranted to my mom, for at least ten minutes, about how season 3's big problem could just be avoided if they wised up and talked to Victor + Sweet about what was going on. So that's how my night is going lol.
My sum up to her (who's never seen the show but she listens to me ramble), was this:
In the first season it's understandable to be wary of Victor (unless you're me because I loved him immediately whoops). He's grumpy, strict, secretive, and talks to a dead raven. The cult situation makes him look like trouble. The urge to stay young forever though... Like... I don't understand why it's such a big deal to keep it from him. Once they find out it means literally taking life from someone—yeah don't let them do the ritual but for Ra's sake if they had just told Victor then he wouldn't have done the ritual either. Here's where I point to season 2.
I long believed that Victor didn't actually want to harm the students or let harm come to them. During the Senet game, we get actual proof of that. Vera might be willing to do whatever it takes (and with scary Rufus I get it) but Victor regrets his choice to follow that plan and straight up refuses to risk the kids any more.
Additionally, while Senkhara was a problem, I don't see what was so bad about Victor getting the mask. If Senkhara wasn't cursing them and giving threats... Then just let him have it? So he gets tears of gold and can finally make more elixir...which I think is good?? It's a way to stay immortal/ageless without any sacrifice. And with his immortal life he'd probably just keep learning things and continue to protect Anubis House...
And now the S3 issue. Victor wanted to bring back Robert as he was. He wanted to revive him as the same kind, intelligent, driven man he'd once known. Sweet wanted much the same. As the kids said themselves, those two might not always make good decisions or do good things but they aren't dark-hearted. Caroline pretending to be Harriet out of jealousy and spite and hunger for power... Yeah that's not good. Had the kids just told Victor what they found out and that they want to help revive him the right way... Literally the rest of the season wouldn't have happened like it did! (I know, a plot has to plot but my nerd rage is still going to exist)
A last note: One of the things about Touchstone I love so much is that we witness the protective, well-intentioned Victor who wants to keep the kids safe— we literally see Victor get hurt to protect a kid that was just mistrusting and disliking him moments earlier. He may scheme and keep secrets and be a spooky caretaker but he's not evil! He wants to remain ageless and some wealth wouldn't hurt but not at the expense of anyone's life, especially not the kids. (and I totally love him okay)
Late night rant over.

Six (G, 1k)
on AO3
"Alright," Harry said as he stumbled out of the floo behind his boyfriend of six years. "Who the bloody hell was that?"
Draco had already wiped the soot from his jacket and looked his usual impeccable self to match their impeccable surroundings of the Manor's drawing room. It was a far cry from the warm, well-worn, furnishings of the rustic muggle pub they had just left Blaise at with his most recent conquest after their double date.
"Who was who, darling?" Draco asked distractedly, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt.
"Don't play dumb, darling," Harry narrowed his eyes. "What happened to Anna? She was sweet, I liked her."
"Yes, well so did Blaise. But I guess he likes Christine now. Charlotte? Or was it Caroline? I swear it began with a C."
Draco was already walking towards the drinks cabinet to pour them each a glass of firewhisky. He knew Harry so well at this point that the alcohol would be necessary as they discussed the recent development of Blaise's love life. Although he did find it adorable that Harry still held onto romantic ideals. Not that he would ever speak that out loud, of course.
"You were right with Christine. But seriously, Draco. If he keeps going through women like this, I might have to start calling him Henry." Harry accepted the glass of firewhisky and downed it in one.
"Oh, come on! He's not beheading any of them. And do you honestly see Blaise, Blaise, our serial philanderer friend..."
"Your serial philanderer friend, you mean."
"...settling down and marrying one woman, let alone six."
"Hang on. You got that reference."
"Well of course I did. Who do you take me for?"
"You seriously know about Henry VIII?"
"Yes, seriously." Draco placed his still full tumbler down on the nearest side table and grabbed Harry's wrist. "Come on, I'll show you something."
He pulled Harry through the Manor to the library, Draco's favourite room by far, but one that Harry hardly ever set foot in. Sometimes Granger would come over and join Draco there in silent companionship, enjoying their respective books or research while Harry went out and did whatever it was that he and Weasley did for fun.
Draco deposited his boyfriend on the burgundy leather sofa underneath the windows closest to the historical section. His fingers skittered over the spines of the historical fiction that sat on the shelves at eyeline before he looked up, and up, summoning the footstool so he could reach the books he was really looking for.
Harry could be happy in the library it appeared, so long as Draco was reaching up to the shelves like that. He was thoroughly enjoying the view of Draco's backside in tight, charcoal trousers when he was disrupted from his reverie by a heavy book landing on his lap. It was followed by another, then another, each title referring to Henry VIII, The Tudors, or his six wives.
"Bloody hell, Draco. I get it, okay. You know about Henry VIII." Another two books landed on his lap and he sighed in exasperation. "Okay, you definitely know a lot more than me." Draco turned his head to look at him with a smug grin on his face. "I only know the bloody song."
"What song?" Draco was curious.
"You know... Divorced, beheaded and died. Divorced, beheaded, survived. They taught us it at school. Primary school in history class."
Draco pressed his lips together in an obvious effort to hold back his laughter which only resulted in an amused snort and a grin that he hid behind the book he was holding.
"Go ahead and laugh," Harry resigned himself to his boyfriend's mirth.
"Nope, I'm good," Draco replied after coughing lightly to clear his throat.
He was stepping down from the footstool now with a pile of small, leather-bound books levitating in front of him.
"These," he said, settling down next to Harry and putting the books on the small table in front of the sofa. "These are really special."
He began using magic to turn the pages of the books which were discoloured with age and Harry spotted the name Malfoy written occasionally amongst the scrawled handwriting.
Harry leant forward to look closer at the words in one of the books, only for Draco to smack his hand when he went to turn a page.
"Hey!" he complained.
"They're my ancestors' journals, Harry," Draco said, eyes glistening with glee. "Remember how the Malfoys used to be quite influential in Muggle business and politics?" Harry could only nod, mesmerised by the look on his boyfriend's face. "Well this one," he pointed, "belonged to Jacob Malfoy in 1547. He witnessed the King's death, gives an account of it in here and talks a bit before that about Catherine Parr. Did you know he helped her become the first published woman in Britain? Just altered a few memories here and there, maybe cast an imperious or two..."
"To make sure the sixth queen was a published author?"
"So he says. But this one," Draco pointed again, "was the journal of Jacob's father in 1536. He was often at court to provide advice on something or other."
"So, you're telling me that your ancestors knew Henry VIII? Katherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, all of them?"
Draco nodded enthusiastically, nibbling at his lower lip. "Yup! Brilliant isn't it? And that charge of witchcraft on Anne Boleyn?" Now it was Harry's turn to nod in wonder, "Actually witchcraft! Or wizard-craft in any case."
His boyfriend's eyes were twinkling.
"She asked the wrong family for a favour. Or the right family I guess, whichever way you want to look at it." Harry could see that Draco found this absolutely hilarious.
"Draco! She was beheaded for that!"
"No," Draco reasoned. "She was beheaded because she stupidly committed adultery and possibly incest. And that had nothing to do with the Malfoys. They just provided her with a fertility potion. Had she kept to the king's bed, she would have been fine."
Harry stared incredulously.
"What? It's not our fault she panicked. Here, look."

A Year to Eternity? - Chapter 2
Tumblr media
AN: I do not own TVD, TO or Legacies
He cast his eyes upwards and blinked, counting the logs on the building’s exterior; forty beams stacked horizontally created the house’s height.
A few centuries ago the home would have been moderately luxurious, and by twenty-first century standards of vacation homes it held a certain rustic charm.
Were he human he wouldn’t have minded living out his days inside, especially if he could do so with the woman who owned it.
He could see it: a charming home, a compassionate woman, and hellion or two running amok to remind him fondly of rambunctious younger siblings. An entire life he might have had in another world.
He didn’t anticipate much of a life beyond the full moon; only the promise of the dreaded black horizon remained.
He could live with that. He would live with that… for her.
The half baked idea formed in his mind long before bearing witness to his niece’s lapsed judgement; it wasn’t her fault, and he had a plan to deal with it, but there remained one single piece of unfinished business.
Conscious suddenly of the passage of time he allowed his eyes one final glance at the red convertible before he knocked.
“It’s open.” The familiar voice called from upstairs in obvious invitation; he made a mental not to scold her for it as he stepped inside.
Beyond the open patio doors water lapped against the deck, bringing with it the fresh air and damp earth.
He passed the cozy dining room table, caught the sweet smell from the vase of tulips, pausing at the foot of the stairs where he tilted his head minutely and met the guarded blue eyes of his sister.
She came down the steps until they were at an equal height and stopped. With a jolt he realized the guarded expression was a reflection of his own eyes.
“You’re going to do something foolish, aren’t you?” His stiff neck proved answer enough and she released a defeated sigh. “My idiotic, self-sacrificing, noble brother.”
She looked at him, tears shimmering in her eyes that she refused to let fall.
“Please don’t do this.”
“What makes you think I plan on doing anything?” He straightened his shoulders.
“You’re here,” she tossed up her hands, but kept her voice low so it didn’t carry to mortal ears, “you’re stepping into her human life because you think this is your final chance to see her.”
“I’m just here to catch up with an old friend,” he denied, unsure why he bothered; Rebekah could always see through him when it came to her. He attempted deflection instead. “What are you doing here?”
“You know exactly what I’m doing here,” she scoffed, “just like she knows why I waltzed back into her life, but I’ve waited a thousand years. I can wait a few more weeks.”
“What do you mean?” His brows drew together.
Rebekah hesitated, glancing up the stairs when Elena called down.
“My brain’s not addled, right?” Her laugh sounded strained, as if she worried that were really the case. “I heard someone at the door?”
“You’re not mad yet, love,” she called.
“Rebekah?” He reached for her elbow.
“You’ll see,” she shook off his hand. “Tell her she’s missing necessitates and I’ve gone in town to fetch them.”
He stared after her a moment beyond the closing of the door and then walked up the stairs, following the steady sound of her heart to a room overlooking the lake.
He tried not to do it, but when he found her on her knees, up to her elbows in a blue tote, he couldn’t keep her name from rolling off his tongue in revered tones.
“Elena.”
She inhaled a short breath and looked up. The soft smile he liked to fantasize as being just for him bloomed, warming his soul.
“Elijah.”
His name from her lips welcomed him home with whispers of a life they would never have.
“This is Mystic Falls,” the corner of his mouth quirked up, “you need to be more careful about who you invite inside.”
“I felt pretty safe with Rebekah here,” she shrugged, “besides, with the exception of Caroline, I make a point of avoiding vampires these days.”
“Do you want me to leave?” He motioned over his shoulder.
“I think I can make another exception,” her half smile returned. “And it’s only partially because your sister seems to have abandoned me and I definitely need help to stand up.”
His eyes flickered down to her stomach as she leaned back on her knees. The rest of the room came into focus, making sense of Rebekah’s comment.
“That I can do,” he chuckled. Placing a hand on her elbow, he helped her stand and guided her into the grey rocking chair before kneeling and putting the rest of the clothes in the dresser.
“Don’t get me wrong,” she picked up a stuffed whale, “because it is nice to see you, but if I ask what you’re doing here will you give me a straight answer, or dodge my question like your sister?”
A thousand responses filtered through his mind: ‘I miss you’, ‘I wanted to see you’, ‘I needed to hear your voice one more time’.
“I thought it was time we caught up,” he said instead. “The last I heard you were in a magically induced coma after becoming human again.”
“Then you’re definitely behind on the times,” she chewed her bottom lip.
“Yes, well,” he shut the drawer filled with onesies he felt certain once belonged to Hope, “when you were awakened I had no idea who I was.”
“Sounds like I missed a lot too,” she blew out a rush of air. “Tea?”
“Tea?” He frowned, snapping the tote’s lid back in place.
“I’d offer coffee, but Caroline and Bonnie purged the kitchen when I proved incapable of not drinking it,” she stood up carefully. “The other option is water or a decent whiskey that’s been collecting dust for twenty-plus years.”
“Tea would be lovely,” he smiled, watching her place the whale in the crib.
She walked out of the room faster than he thought she should have been capable of in her current condition. He caught up with ease, finding her at the top of the stairs holding tight to the railing.
In the kitchen she put the kettle on to boil and reached into a cupboard.
He stretched an arm above her head, retrieving the blue mugs beyond her grasp.
“Thanks,” she murmured.
Elena busied her hands preparing the tea and Elijah allowed himself a moment, one glistening moment, to bask in domesticity; they worked well together, gliding around each other. And when his hand brushed her elbow or grazed the small of her back her heart skipped just as it had all those years ago in Willoughby when he felt the jump beneath his finger tips.
The taste of her lips had haunted him since.
“Where did Rebekah go?” She asked when they sat on the back deck.
He forced his gaze up, halting his study of her mouth’s movement. Sunlight filtered through the sparse trees, casting her warm eyes half in shadow.
“She mentioned something about fetching missing necessities,” he sipped his tea and tilted the mug, glancing at the dark liquid.
“Necessities,” she tasted the word, feeling the weight of each syllable on her tongue. “I didn’t realize I lacked necessities.”
“Have you run out of milk?” He smirked.
“I just bought groceries and even if I hadn’t I don’t know when she would have gotten the chance to look in the fridge and find a lack of milk.”
“I’m surprised you didn’t attempt to purchase coffee,” he chuckled.
“Tried in the second trimester and got caught by Caroline,” she sipped, shrugging one shoulder. Her tongue darted out to catch a drop from her lip. “She compelled everyone who might have supplied it and now I have to drive to Richmond, which is just too much work for a cup of mediocre coffee. And Rebekah was only in the nursery.”
“Maybe she noticed something missing.”
“She wouldn’t be the first one,” Elena stared out across the sparkling water. “I wish I still had her number so I can tell her it’s not necessary; she did enough.”
“What do you mean?” He set his mug on the table and reached into his jacket for his phone.
“Well, she carried everything inside, put the crib together and recycled the boxes.” She drummed her fingers along her stomach. “She doesn’t have to suck up to get the cure. All she had to do was ask.”
“So you do still have it,” he leaned across the table, setting down his phone and catching her cup before it could tumble into her lap.
“What happened to you Elena? When word reached me I expected you to sleep for decades, yet Bonnie Bennett lives and you’re awake.”
“You want to know how I woke up,” she laid her hands on the table, feeling the warmth from his arm across the inch of space, “when it was made clear to all of us that any interference from anyone would result in a joint, grisly death.”
“It is my understanding that you were to sleep until Bonnie passed.” He tilted his head, narrowing his eyes thoughtfully.
“There is a very simple explanation for that,” she turned over her palm and traced her lifeline with her eyes. “Kai lied about the curse. He told Damon it was tied to Bonnie’s life, but actually he tied it to Damon’s.”
She lapsed into silence a moment; a symphony of crickets and frogs filled the quiet. When she opened her mouth again a mixture of nostalgia and sorrow laced her tone, nearly drowning out the touch of exasperation.
“Care and Bonnie filled me in since I was ‘sleeping’ at the time,” she exhaled, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear.
“About eight years ago Katherine clawed her way out of hell, and no, I’m not joking. She came with a rather solid plan to get rid of me. Mystic Falls came this close to being consumed in literal hellfire,” she held her thumb and forefinger together.
“Obviously that didn’t happen,” he inclined his head.
“They dug up her bones and carved a knife that would kill her once and for all,” she cringed and swallowed her urge to apologize. Once upon a time Elijah had loved her, and she spoke of her ancestor’s death with no hint of remorse, but for whatever reason he didn’t seem bothered, merely curious.
“What happened?”
“Nobody knows for sure,” she shrugged. “The running theory is that Stefan did what he always did and played the hero because someone had to drag Katherine down so she wouldn’t get away. Stefan killed Katherine and saved the town, and Damon tried to save Stefan, or vice versa. All anyone really knows is that all three of them went down in the caves and all three of them died.”
“I’m sorry.” His sudden admission made her heart skip. “You two were together,” he answered the silent question.
“I don’t know that we were at that point,” her brows narrowed. “I told him to live his life which was as close to a break up as I could get without actually saying it. Should I have said: ‘wait for me’ instead?”
“What are a handful of decades to a vampire?”
“Arguably nothing,” she shrugged. “I think I still had a human’s perspective of time where everything can change in the blink of an eye. I still think that regardless of immortality.”
He thought of his niece. The turning point for all of them. Their hope brought forth by what should have been a single act fuelled by bourbon and bad decisions that brought mother and child into their lives.
“You think that because it’s true, and any immortal who says otherwise is lying through their teeth.”
“How do I know you’re not lying now?” She said, a teasing light in her eyes.
“I have never lied to you Elena, and I never will.”
Her eyes flickered to his mouth and back up.
“Never?” She tasted scepticism on her tongue.
“Never,” he confirmed. “I might have withheld information, but I have never lied. Not to you.”
“You withheld information?” She cocked a curious eyebrow. “What didn’t you tell me?”
Objectively she knew the amount of things he hadn’t told her were innumerable; there had to be countless things he had kept quiet for the simple reason that the information was none of her business.
“I never told you that even on your emotionless bottom I could never mistake you for anyone else.” He reached for his mug, taking a sip of lukewarm tea.
Colour kissed her collarbones.
“Could have fooled me,” she murmured.
“I never got the chance to tell you, and for that I’m sorry.”
“So am I,” she licked her bottom lip, “for what I said in Willoughby, for…”
“That’s not necessary, Elena.”
“Yeah, it is,” she sighed. The flicker of hurt in his eyes that day had urged her to turn it back on; she nearly listened to the whisper.
“I lied,” she ran her finger around the rim of her mug, “it didn’t feel good watching the letter burn, or anything else.”
Her stomach twisted with despair.
Her covered her hand, gently squeezing her fingers. Warmth spread up her arm.
“Can I ask you something?”
She swallowed and sucked in a shallow breath, glancing up through her lashes.
“You can ask me anything,” she gave him her soft half smile.
“Why did Rebekah put that nursery together?” He nodded to the house.
“Because I put it off until I physically couldn’t put things together.” She shrugged.
“And when you left the nursery you practically ran.”
“Is there a question in there?” She took in a shaking breath.
“A couple questions,” he nodded. “Why hadn’t anyone helped you before now?”
“Caroline and Bonnie have been helping, but they have their own lives.”
“Is there nobody else who could offer aid?” He frowned in concern, mentally calculating the distance from the lake to the hospital.
“Jeremy pops by from time to time, but he wouldn’t have a clue how to do half of this stuff,” amusement flickered through her eyes. “Ric does know, but after one too many grandpa jokes he’s hesitant to step into more teasing. And then there’s the fact that everyone thinks I already did all of this stuff except for Bonnie; she was with me when I picked up the crib today and saw the trunk of my car.”
“She didn’t offer to help?” He quickly questioned the wisdom in lecturing the Bennett witch.
“Kol was on her doorstep, Caroline wanted her to help him. I didn’t hear the message though,” her teeth sank into her bottom lip, “since my brain was hurtling full speed towards a freak out. You didn’t know Kol was at Bonnie’s?”
“No,” he leaned forward, reflexively squeezing her hand. “Are you alright?”
“I’m fine,” she smiled sadly, “Rebekah showed up and calmed me down.”
“And where is your child’s father in all of this?” Unsurprisingly he felt a stab of jealousy.
“Non-existent,” she shivered in a blast of cold wind.
He stood, offering her a hand up. “Non-existent?”
She carried the empty mugs inside, nodding as he shut the patio door.
“I mean, obviously he exists somewhere, but I have no idea where.” She slammed the mugs down with more force than necessary. One shattered, sending half a dozen shards to the floor.
Before she could blink Elijah knelt at her feet. He picked up the sharp pieces with one hand and grasped her hip with the other to help her keep her balance.
“Shall I hunt the bastard down and murder him for you?” He attempted to joke.
“If only it were that simple,” she breathed. A blush crept up her cheeks when she saw the mess she had made. “Caroline already made that offer.”
“And you didn’t take her up on it?” He stood, disposing of glass.
“I’d have to know where to start looking,” she shook her head. The weight settled on her chest again.
“If I ask what happened, will you tell me?” His hands curled around her elbows.
“I don’t know,” she stepped out of his hold, spinning to pace into the living room.
“Elena?”
She grasped the back of a leather armchair and sucked in quick bursts of air, forcing herself to even her breathing.
“I don’t know, Elijah,” she shook her head. “I… I literally don’t know.”
And then her procrastination, desire to be anywhere else but the nursery, and her apparent lack of excitement, made sense; and it seemed unlikely that the possibility of eventually bringing another doppelgänger into the world was the root of the problem.
“Walk me through it,” he placed his palm on the small of her back. “Tell me?”
“I haven’t told anybody,” a hysterical giggle, closer to a sob, broke in her chest. Two breakdowns in one day. Nice Elena.
“Not Bonnie or Caroline?”
She shook her head. “They would have burned that town down for answers, so I told them it was a one night thing and when I told him he basically told me to go to hell.”
“Will you tell me the truth?” He wanted to scold himself for daring to physically comfort her, but he was a selfish man; he would take every possible form of contact he could get.
“I suppose I’ll have to, won’t I?” She sighed, rolling her eyes. “You’ll know if I lie.”
“You don’t have to tell me anything.” His fingers worked a knot from her back. The level of tension in her body worried him.
Her legs shook, exhausted from hauling around the extra weight.
He guided her to the sofa and perched beside her, resisting the urge to wrap an arm around her shoulders. He doubted she would like that with the subject he suspected invaded her mind; he wanted to kick himself for bringing it up and forcing her to relive it.
A fire crackled to life in the hearth.
He filed the knowledge away for later.
“You know about the twins?” She took controlled breaths, watching him nod. “They’re gonna have to merge and Caroline’s been looking for a solution since they were little. I go with her sometimes; the promise of channeling the last doppelgänger tends to loosen tongues.”
“I can understand that.” He shifted, accidentally brushing her knee.
“She got a lead, turned out to be a bust,” she tilted her head, “about a witch near Almeirim, so about nine months ago I went with her to Brazil. She went to meet the witch and I hung back in case she needed me.”
She stared at the coffee table without seeing it.
“I got a little bored, so around midnight I went for a walk near the river.”
“Alone?” His brows shut up.
“I know the danger of walking along, and I thought I could handle myself.” She waved one hand towards the fire. “After everything I thought learning a bit of magic would be a good idea.”
“Did your gypsy heritage help?” He listened to her erratic heart.
“No.” Her eyes took on a far away look again. “I walked along the river. I heard something break the surface. I turned to look, and then… then I was fifteen feet downstream, soaked through and my phone was on the ground with two missed calls from Caroline and a bunch of text messages.”
“How much time had passed?” His mind scrambled for possibilities.
“At least three hours,” she worried her bottom lip. “A couple weeks later I got a positive pregnancy test.”
“You didn’t consider the possibility before that?”
“I felt physically fine.” She placed her palms on her thighs. “Everything was in place, nothing hurt, so no, my mind didn’t go to that possibility. I didn’t even think I could be pregnant until Caroline gently steered me in that direction.”
“Where did your mind go?”
“Witches,” she shrugged. “I figured witches saw me, recognized me, and used me for a spell before making me forget it.”
“Not vampires?” He smirked.
“I was on vervain.”
“And you’ve told nobody,” his eyes noted the shift in light, signifying the sinking sun.
“Nobody,” she exhaled.
“I see,” he glanced towards the ceiling. Then studied her profile.
“Elena…” he hesitated, but ultimately reached for her hand. “Do you want this?”
“I…” her mouth opened and closed a few times. “I have mixed feelings.”
She loved Bonnie, but she could be judgemental at times, and she loved Caroline; they were family, sisters, but neither could ever understand. She suspected Katherine to be the only one who could have, and even then she couldn’t get all of it. Katherine would have understood half. Caroline would have understood half, but nobody would understand it all, not completely.
Elijah would listen though - listen and not judge.
“I’m a doppelgänger,” she closed her eyes, “I never wanted there to be another; that was going to be my giant ‘fuck you’ to Klaus.”
He chuckled, she smiled, and neither mentioned the way their fingers slipped together.
“But now there is a baby, so that’s out the window,” she tilted her head, laughing softly. “And I don’t know how it got in there. I don’t know if I consented and then was forced to forget, or maybe I didn’t consent; maybe someone forced me because they wanted my bloodline to continue. And I don’t know if I’m supposed to find the mermaid theme a cute reminder of getting knocked up somewhere near the water, or if I’m supposed to be horrified, but…” she trailed off, feeling the sting of tears behind her eyes.
Elijah pressed a smooth navy handkerchief into her hand, nodding encouragingly as she opened and dried her eyes.
“But,” her fingers crumpled the fabric against her belly. “There’s going to be a baby. And she’s real, and she’s mine,” her voice trembled, “and I put everything off. Then today I had to confront it.
“I told Rebekah I was terrified of being a single mother, which is true,” she sniffed, clearing her throat, “and that’s why I had the anxiety attack.”
“You’re conflicted,” he smoothed his thumb along her finger, “and after what you told me I’m not surprised. I am surprised that you’re not sobbing right now.”
She groaned, dropping her head into her hands. “I just totally unloaded on you. I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright Elena,” he smoothed a hand across her shoulders.
“No, it’s not,” she pressed her lips together. “You came here to catch up and I…”
“I did catch up,” he swept her hair over her shoulder and pulled her hands away from her face. His thumbs rubbed over her knuckles. “I arguably know more than your friends.”
“No arguing about it because you do know more,” her nose wrinkled as her lips parted slightly. “Why are you really here? I might have bought catching up if you hadn’t looked like you wanted to say a million other things.”
“Am I that easily read?”
“I’m getting better at it,” she twisted in place, releasing his hands as she readjusted. “What’s going on? Why today? And what did you mean you didn’t know who you were? You said you’d never lie to me,” she reminded with a watery smile.
“I did say that,” he lowered his eyes, nodding. “I had my memory removed so I wouldn’t be a danger to my family and I came here today because it’s the last chance I’ll get to speak with you.”
The teasing sparkle left her eyes.
“What do you mean?” She swallowed.
“A darkness has taken hold of my niece,” he sighed, watching the shift of her stomach. A lump rose beneath her shirt as the baby stretched in the cramped space. “It’s killing her; she won’t survive the full moon tonight.”
“Th-that’s horrible,” she gently touched his arm, “but I don’t understand the connection.”
“I took her to lunch today and overheard a conversation I wasn’t meant to.”
“Eavesdropper,” she accused, attempting to lift the dread from her shoulders.
“Niklaus plans to have Caroline’s girls move the Hollow - that’s the darkness my siblings and I took into ourselves years ago, and the reason I forgot everything - into him. Then he wants her to subdue him and drop him at the bottom of the ocean. I can’t let him do that.”
She couldn’t see Caroline being onboard with the plan, and she wouldn’t have wished that fate on Klaus anymore, but if it came to a choice between brothers she knew who she would pick.
“Don’t do this Elijah,” fresh tears welled in her eyes. She lost too many people to martyrdom; he was meant to be there, always somewhere.
“You don’t even know what I’m planning,” his rueful smile failed to reach his eyes.
“Like hell I don’t,” she cried, digging her nails into his soft jacket. “You do things you abhor to protect your family all the time, and now you’re thinking you’ll take Klaus’ place. I get that you want to protect them; I understand it, but not like this. Find another way.”
“There is no other way,” he shook his head, catching the crunch of tires over gravel.
The speed she utilized to stand shocked them almost as much as the vehemence in her voice.
“There’s always another way!” Heat flashed in her eyes; it dissipated a bit when her front door swung open. Her brows rose, shooting towards her hairline. “Care?”
“Hey,” she grinned, striding into the living room. She took in Elijah’s presence, but made no comment on her best friend’s company. “Did you pick up popcorn?”
“Yeah,” she crossed her arms over her stomach, “why?”
“Because this is going to be seriously amusing,” her eyes glittered, jumping from green to blue and back.
Elena opened her mouth to ask, but a clipped accent cut off her voice.
“You’re taking far too much pleasure in this, love.”
“Not yet,” Caroline smirked, “but I guarantee that I will.”
++++
“You need to relax,” Kol scolded, lightly clapping a hand on her knee. “Lighten up.”
“How am I supposed to do that?” She scoffed through a bemused smile.
He never wanted to see such a forlorn expression on her face; she was meant to be protected and kept far from the horrific company their family made a habit of keeping. His dead heart broke to see so much cynicism in one so young.
“My life hangs on my dad’s ability to convince a woman who hates him, whose aunt he murdered in a ritual that should have killed her too, to help him.”
“Don’t count him out yet, bunny.”
“I’m going to die in a few hours,” she rolled her eyes, staring out over the town square. “She’s not going to want to help him.”
He tapped his fingers against the bench and watched the revelry of the teenagers along with the rest of the town. It still surprised him, though it probably shouldn’t have, how little the town had changed. He half expected the quarterback to materialize on his periphery in a letterman jacket, but of course he now held the office of Sheriff.
“She might hate Nik.” He ran his tongue over his teeth. “She might deny Nik. She could hear it out from Rebekah. Her guilt may sway her to say yes to me, though I doubt it. There is, however, one person she will say yes to.”
Hope’s eyes narrowed as she tilted her head and gripped the underside of the bench, driving a splinter into her index finger. “Caroline?”
Caroline Forbes possessed a single minded determination that led them to the breakthrough, and as Elena’s best friend she held the doppelgängers ear, but he doubted even Caroline could turn her set mind.
The hatred for Klaus ran deep.
“Sure,” the corner of his mouth quirked up.
From the edge of the square, on the fringe of the concert crowd, a teenage boy stole a glance in their direction; his fifth since they sat down, not that Kol deliberately kept count. The boy simply proved impossible to miss for anyone whose attention was not consumed by her impending death.
“Don’t look now, darling,” he teased, “but there is a kicked puppy that keeps looking at you.” The statement succeeded in distracting her. He watched her face pop up and flood with heat and a tiny smile. “Is this possibly a puppy you didn’t mean to kick?”
“He’s not a puppy,” she murmured.
“Oh, you like him,” he leaned forward, bracing his elbows on his knees. “Shall I inquire as to his intentions? Perhaps discuss a dowry?”
“You’re not half as funny as you think you are,” she told her shoes.
“I’m hilarious and you know it.” An idea took shape in his mind; he hoped it would be a fitting distraction. “Why don’t you go and talk to him? He doesn’t look like he bites. Go on and have some fun.”
“What’s the point?” She shook her head, but her muscles bunched, ready to stand and approach.
“The point, little witch, is that you’re fifteen years old and you’re alive and you deserve to have some fun with a boy you like while your beloved uncle makes him uncomfortable with threatening stares.” He chuckled and smoothed out his features. “I do a wonderful imitation of a deranged psychopath.”
“Is that because you are one?” She cocked an eyebrow, increasing her resemblance to her father.
“Less so these days,” he smirked and brought one hand around to the small of her back, “go on. Have some fun.”
Hope got to her feet rather than let him shove her to the ground. Her nails picked at her finger, pulling the splinter out; it stung, burning in the evening air. She glanced over her shoulder and received a shooing motion for the effort.
With her heart in her throat she sucked in a shallow breath and left, skirting around the people listening to the music.
Landon glanced around as she approached him, tearing his poor concentration from the dancing couples. His shock morphed into a shy smile.
Butterflies swarmed in her belly, making her steps falter. She sensed if she looked back she would find one uncle resembling a cat with a canary.
“Hey.” She cringed at the breathlessness of her voice. Fuel for the teasing fire, but then again, she’d be dead in a few hours so it didn’t matter.
“Hey.” His voice matched hers and that brought a modicum of comfort.
“I thought you had to be somewhere tonight.”
“Yeah, well,” she shrugged, slipping her hands into her pockets, “it turns out that somewhere was the town square with my uncle.”
“You’re uncle?” His eyes widened when she nodded. “He’s young.”
“He’s older than he looks,” she snickered, considering turning to give him a quick smirk. “I’m here for a little while, but I do have a curfew soon.”
“Private school doesn’t want you hanging out with the town riffraff too late?” He teased. “Shocking.”
“Trust me,” she laughed, “there’s plenty of riffraff behind the gates.”
He laughed, ducking his head.
“So, uh,” he spoke to his shoes, “you know that jerk from the Grille?”
He looked up and she nodded.
“Apparently he wrecked his car today.”
She had to bite her lip to hide her grin she knew matched Kol’s.
“And now you’re here, and the music’s good, so before my luck runs out, which it will…”
He sighed and rubbed the back of his neck. “Do you… uh… want to dance or something?”
“You want to dance with me?” Her brows shot up. Nobody had ever asked her to dance outside of family, and she hadn’t felt inclined to do much dancing at the wedding.
“Fair warning,” he started babbling, “I might suck at it, and I haven’t really thought this whole thing through. Kind of living in the moment here,” he shrugged his shoulders.
“I…” she hesitated, biting her lip. “You know I should probably do more of that myself.”
She held out her hand, nodding as they moved into a simple form and swayed. When they turned she half expected to find Kol glaring at Landon like he promised. Instead she found his nodding head bent over a sheet of paper and Bonnie Bennett beside him, turning over the bone knife between her hands.
++++
“I wish we had more time,” Bonnie murmured, running her finger over the dark object. A vial burned a hole in her pocket.
“You can seal it in the knife with Elena’s blood,” he made minute adjustments with a pencil.
“I know, and I know it’ll work,” she sighed. “I just wish we could have found something less… pointy.”
“Pointy?” He laughed, turning to face her.
“Don’t mock me,” she elbowed him lightly, “this is still going to be a dangerous thing. Made all the worse by the evil spirit we’re going to stick inside it.”
“I know, love,” he sobered. “I wish we had a little more time too, but Elena’s blood will seal it and we can lock the knife up. Given more time we could have broken down the components and forged a box of sorts, but,” his eyes found his niece, “we’re short on time.”
“I know,” she reached into her pocket for her buzzing phone. “It’s Caroline.”

Spectacular - Part 3
hello duckies! here is part 3 for y’all on this fine day/night. i did cut a bit of the story out because it simply didn’t flow the way i wanted it to, but everything should still make sense. i also believe this is the longest part of the story in terms of words (i am long-winded) anywho, let’s get going!
wk: 1985
-o-o-o-o-o-
From then on, Benedict and Anastasia spent nearly every single day together, even after the season ended and winter began to take its hold. If Benedict was not calling on Anastasia, she was spending her afternoon in the Bridgertons’ drawing room under the guise of spending time with Eloise.
The truth was, she rather enjoyed spending time with Benedict instead. Every moment they spent together, she fell deeper and deeper in love with him. It wasn’t until one particular evening she realized just how far she had fallen.
Anastasia pulled her cloak tightly over her shoulders. Her body rattled with nervousness and excitement for her evening’s plans.
At precisely 9:15, a rock hit her bedroom window, signaling the arrival of her friend.
Anastasia took a deep breath and began her journey through the house, attempting to walk lightly so as to not alert her father and brothers of her late departure. She was nearly out the door to the backyard when she was startled by a voice.
“Miss Mackenzie?”
Freezing, Anastasia turned and found her own lady’s maid standing in front of her.
“Caroline,” she breathed in relief. “What are you doing up so late?”
“I was getting a glass of water, miss,” Caroline answered. “But I could ask you the same thing if it were my place.”
Anastasia sighed. She had met Caroline when she was merely thirteen, the same year she met the Bridgertons.
“I was going for a stroll in the garden,” she lied.
“At this hour? Are you well?” Caroline asked worriedly.
“Yes,” Anastasia breathed. “I am in need of some fresh air.”
“If you prefer, I shall accompany you? It is no trouble, really-”
“No, that will not be necessary,” she objected. “Thank you, Caroline. You may resume.”
“Of course, Miss,” Caroline said, bowing slightly.
Anastasia turned on her heel to leave, only to be stopped once more.
“Miss Mackenzie? Send Mr. Bridgerton my regards.”
Whipping around with wide eyes, Anastasia began to stutter out an excuse.
“I will not tell,” Caroline interrupted. “I shall never speak of this night or any other to another soul for as long as I shall live.”
The young lady sighed in relief when she saw her maid’s teasing smile.
“Off with you now, Miss,” Caroline dismissed with a loving wave.
With that, Anastasia pulled her hood over her head and slipped into the garden, where her escort for the night awaited.
“What took you so long? I thought we had been caught,” Benedict said.
“We have,” Anastasia scoffed, sliding her hand around his arm. “Caroline caught me leaving, but she swore to never speak of it.”
“If you trust her, I trust her,” he smiled, gently resting his free hand on hers.
She flushed slightly and looked at the world around them. “Where are we going, anyway?”
“We are going to visit a friend of mine, Henry Granville,” he replied.
“The artist?”
Benedict nodded. “I would like to show you the finer things in life. These are the privileges I enjoy as the second son.”
Soon, they arrived at a large house with candles lit in every window. Once they stepped inside, it was revealed that there were lots of people littering the hallways and rooms.
“Are you ready?” Benedict asked, his lips so close they caused a shiver to run through her.
She held onto his arm tighter and nodded, swallowing her anxiety.
As he led her through a house familiar to him, she witnessed all sorts of people doing all sorts of things. Some were engaging in conversation and drinking wine, others were participating in more lascivious activities. As they rounded a corner, they entered a room with two lovely models in the middle of a ring of artists, each sketching from their own point of view.
“You said you were curious as to where I had all my practice,” Benedict said, pulling her from her trance. “Here we are.”
“Mr. Bridgerton,” a man beamed as he approached the two. “How are you, my friend?”
“I am quite well. Yourself?” Benedict replied.
“I cannot complain,” the man teased. “And who is this?”
Anastasia swallowed as his eyes fell upon her.
“This is Anastasia,” Benedict grinned. “Ana, this is Sir Henry Granville.”
“It is a pleasure to meet you, Mr. Granville,” she said, bowing gracefully.
Henry gently took the hand that was not clinging to Benedict’s sleeve and kissed it. “The pleasure is all mine, Miss Mackenzie.”
Her face paled at the use of her surname.
“Please, enjoy our festivities,” Henry said, gesturing to a few empty stools with sketch pads in front of them.
He disappeared without another word, tending to other guests elsewhere.
“I do quite enjoy his company,” Benedict commented as he led her to the easels.
“He is quite lovely,” she agreed. “Ben, I am glad you have decided to share this part of your life with me, but if anyone were to find out where I am tonight…”
Benedict looked toward her and found a nervous frown taking over her features. He stopped walking and placed a gentle hand on either side of her face, cradling it like the most precious gem in the world.
“Not to worry, tulip,” he comforted. “Henry is very good at keeping this a secret. There is not a person here who would care enough to sully our reputations, nor their own.”
A small smile turned up the corners of her mouth as she leaned into his touch.
“If you trust him, I trust him,” she repeated a version of his words from earlier in their night.
He pressed a gentle kiss on her forehead and immediately recoiled.
“That was improper,” he said. “Please accept my sincerest apologies.”
“Everything we are doing tonight is improper,” she smiled. “I should think an innocent kiss the least of our worries.”
He flashed her a fond, lopsided grin and grabbed her hand, leading her to a pair of easels.
“I am not much of an artist. I prefer music,” she said. “Might I simply watch you work?”
“If you must,” he chuckled, flushing slightly.
For hours, Anastasia watched Benedict sketch with intent focus. She took note of every feature of his face; every line, every mark, every beautiful expression committed to her memory.
“You do have a bit of a problem with staring, tulip.”
Anastasia blushed as Benedict glanced sideways at her, stifling a smirk.
“I do believe I was staring at your artwork,” she lied.
“I do believe you were not,” he mocked.
As she tried to stutter out a response for the second time that evening, he chuckled.
“It is quite alright,” he hummed. “I am almost done and then we may leave.”
“I do not wish to leave so soon,” she objected. “I quite like it here. It is a very relaxing atmosphere. Very different from the ton.”
“I am glad you are enjoying yourself,” he laughed. “Perhaps Mr. Granville will allow us to stay for a while when I finish.”
Fortunately, Henry had absolutely no problem with the duo sitting about.
“Stay all night if you like,” he laughed before turning to Anastasia. “Any friend of Mr. Bridgerton is a friend of mine.”
She bowed her head respectfully with a sweet smile.
As Henry left them, Benedict slid his hand around Anastasia’s and led her to a sofa near a window.
It was dark outside when their conversation began. They talked of their childhoods, their aspirations, their insecurities. There was never an awkward silence like they had felt so many times with other people. Occasionally, a lull occurred in which they would stare at each other in silent revelry.
“Alright,” Benedict said after one of those moments as he leaned forward slightly and placed his hand on one of hers. “I must ask, however improper it may be: when am I allowed to begin courting you?”
“What is the date?” she asked.
“I believe it is the third of April,” he answered.
She hummed. “My late husband passed on the tenth, so you may begin courting me on the eleventh.”
“And when shall I propose marriage?”
“When you feel the time is right,” she replied, heart racing.
“I want to be sure you feel the same as I do,” he said firmly. “I refuse to trap you in another loveless marriage.”
She stared at him. “My marriage to George was not loveless.”
“Surely you cannot convince me you were in love with a man technically old enough to be your father.”
“I was not in love with him, that much is true,” she agreed. “However, that does not mean that I did not love him. He catered to my every want and need. He was gentle, and caring, and more than I could have asked for in an arrangement such as ours. We were not in love, that is for sure. But we did have an incredible fondness for one another, and should I have the option to bring him back and do it all again, I would in a heartbeat.”
Another silence fell over them as he stared at the woman in front of him. He was in awe at how mature she had become since they had met not five years ago. Her elegance and poise was far beyond that of any other girl her age, yet she was still as sharp and witty as she had been in the beginning of her friendship with his dear younger sister.
“I apologize,” he said quietly. “I knew nothing of your marriage, and it was wrong of me to assume anything, let alone vocalize it.”
“It is alright, Ben,” she affirmed, squeezing the hand that still held her own. “I am sure you did not mean any ill will.”
She moved closer to him so that she may lower her voice as if she was telling him her deepest secret.
“There shall be no doubts about my feelings toward you, Benedict,” she said, her expression very serious. “When you feel the time is right, you may propose to me. I will not turn you down.”
“If it were not improper, I would kiss you,” he whispered, mesmerized.
“If it were not improper, I would give you my permission,” she whispered back.
He swallowed. “I suppose no one shall see us if my lips happened upon yours.”
“I agree.”
While Benedict could never have been considered innocent, he was not a rake, and he did not wish to compromise anyone’s reputation, certainly not that of his beloved Anastasia. But under the relaxed atmosphere of the studio and the gentle warmth of firelight, he found himself doing something he would only dream of: he was leaning forward.
And to his surprise, Anastasia was doing the same.
The pair’s lips met in a sweet, tender union of passion and love. They poured their feelings to one another in complete silence, moving in sync. There was no rushing, no pressure, no wanting to move any further than they had already gone.
Yet, they pulled away breathless.
“I shall not tell my brothers if you do not tell yours,” Anastasia whispered, giggling slightly.
“I shall keep that a secret for the rest of my days,” Benedict promised. “I should like to propose to you right now if I knew you would accept.”
“Perhaps my family and yours will think it odd that you would propose without a proper courting,” she quipped.
“Perhaps they will,” he hummed, looking upon her fondly.
She glanced out the window to see the sky beginning to pale in color and, with a short sigh, reluctantly rose from the sofa.
“Come,” she said, offering her hand. “Walk me home before daylight comes and my brothers wake to find me gone.”
“They would never know where to find you,” he replied, rising as well.
“Yes, but you shall be the first place they look, and I do wish to keep you alive.”
-o-o-o-o-o-
there we go! very cute, very roughly edited, as always. there will be one more part and then the little epilogue, which is about 500 or so words. i have written a bit with eloise heavily involved, but that’s only like 600 words. but that will probably end up being a little bonus part. let me know what you think!

Author’s note: This was written for Klaroline Bingo @klaroline-events. Prompt: Pain. As an Original, Klaus thought he understood death. But it took meeting one brave human to show him how little he actually knew.
Warning: The angst is back. This idea came to me when I had a health scare earlier this year and I wasn’t quite ready to work through it until now.
Chapter 121: Special Care
“Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome.” ― Isaac Asimov
Klaus was a selfish man. But he couldn’t be selfish about this. This was not about his pain. He watched Caroline’s blue eyes light up as she cradled the delicate blue flowers he’d given her. It was foolish, but he imagined that his gift brought color back to her cheeks. She was far too pale. Klaus had met Caroline when he was traveling through the Andes, searching for a powerful shaman to assist him with locating the final ingredients needed to break his hybrid curse. He’d been in a right strop when he tore through the mountain village, dripping blood and chunks of flesh, and it wasn’t until he’d paused at a stream to wash off some of the gore that he heard the sweetest, most sarcastic voice.
“If you keep scrubbing that hard, you’ll rub off all your glitter.”
From her impish grin, he assumed his expression was quite comical, but for the first time in centuries, he found himself at a loss for words.
“You’re a vampire, right? Seriously?! How do you not know about Twilight?”
For the first time since that half-witted shaman had betrayed him, he burst out laughing.
And that was the moment his life changed. Because Klaus had never met a human so full of life like Caroline was. But Caroline was dying. As he thought of the pain she’d endured, he could feel his temper flaring, wishing he could unleash his fury at this indifferent world.
“Stop it, Klaus,” Caroline’s melodic voice commanded, taking him by the hand and leading him out into the garden. “It’s not your job to be angry at my cancer. Trust me — I’m angry enough for both of us.”
He watched her fussily arrange the brightly colored flowers in the lopsided vase she stubbornly kept from his disastrous pottery lesson, frowning when he noticed how her knees started to shake. He guided her to the plush daybed, mindful of his supernatural strength as he felt how painfully thin she was underneath her gauzy dress. “Trust me, sweetheart, I was furious at the world ages before you came along.”
“Yeah, but I’m special. Something about beautiful and full of light, blah, blah,” she said with a wink.  “And before when you were pissed off, you’d just slaughter a village until you felt better, but this is different.” Her voice took on a more serious tone, and she slid her gaze away from his. “It’s metastatic breast cancer. I have tumors throughout my body. I can’t be cured; the best I can hope for is to keep up my herbal treatments here.”
He shook his head, doing his best to quell his anger. None of this was her fault. He knew when she’d first been diagnosed in the States, she went through the conventional chemotherapy before moving to targeted therapy treatments, but each time the cancer grew back. Finally, she’d exhausted all of her options, and instead pursued a variety of alternative herbal therapies that eventually led her to Argentina. “The kenaf seed extract and aromatherapy seem to be working,” he murmured, placing a kiss to her temple.
Caroline laced their fingers together, a familiar note of caution in her voice as she gently reminded him, “It’s true in lab trials, the extracts killed cancer cells better than some of the other herbal supplements I’ve tried. But with metastasis, there’s peaks and valleys — sometimes the disease is stable, and other times it progresses.”
“But you’re stable now,” he blurted out, hating the uncertainty in his voice.
Her smile was sunshine and joy and all of the sweet promises Klaus fervently wished he’d known centuries ago. How different his life would’ve been. “It’s like I reminded my doctors when they tried to talk me about of moving down here. It’s about the quality of my life, Klaus.”
They were distracted when a vibrant blue and green hummingbird appeared, hovering over the orange and yellow bell-shaped flowers. He heard Caroline’s heart flutter in excitement, and he did his best to ignore her shortness of breath.
Turning away, he observed the hummingbird, an odd sense of peace washing over him as he observed, “Such an extraordinary thing, mercilessly beating its wings just to stay alive. I’ve never witnessed a creature with such fire in its soul, fighting to earn every moment of its life.” He glanced back at her, his gray gaze intense while his voice was barely above a harsh whisper as he said, “Except for you.”
“Are you always so charming,” she asked dryly, reaching up to poke at one of his dimples. “Or, do you normally let your dimples do all the work?”
Klaus gave her an indulgent smile. He loved her sheer cheek; the way she never backed down from him even after she saw what he was. She was glorious. His equal in every way. “Let me turn you,” he pleaded, “my blood can heal you, and then you can be with me.”
“Ask me tomorrow.” She laid her head on his chest, palm resting over his heart. “I’m always surprised that I can feel your heartbeat. It’s strong — like you.”
“And I can hear yours,” he replied gruffly, her erratic pulse sending him into a panic that he did his best to cover up with a smirk.
           “Isn’t it amazing?”
Klaus found himself leaning into the warmth of her embrace, protectively draping his body against hers as they watched the hummingbird flit from one flower to another.
           Amazing.
                             _______________________________________
“You’re going to drop me,” Caroline said with a giggle, her voice muffled against his shoulder and Klaus cradled her against him.
“Nonsense, love. Even as a lad, I carried deer that weighed more than you. Even some of our goats.” As she rolled her eyes, he hastily added, “But you smell much better.”
           “And I smell bullshit.”
Her delighted giggles made his heart feel like it was breaking and healing all at once. They came to a stop at the blanket he’d spread out on the dock, and he carefully laid her among several pillows. Lake Lacár was a magnificent sapphire blue today, and Klaus knew he’d always see Caroline’s fierce gaze reflected in its still waters. Gesturing to the wicker basket, he said, “I thought you’d enjoy a picnic.”
He shyly handed her a glass, pleased that the witch’s freezing spell had kept the smoothies the perfect temperature. “This has ginger in it. I thought it would help with your nausea.”
She beamed at him, taking a sip and nodding enthusiastically, “Delicious. You’re too good to me.”
He ducked his curly head, cheeks reddening slightly. “Many things have been said about me over the centuries, but ‘good’ never was one of them. I’m not a good man, sweetheart.” Snorting derisively, he added, “I’m not even a man.”
Setting aside their smoothies, Caroline huffed impatiently. “Who the hell cares? I certainly don’t. You’re smart and tough and fiercely protective. You’re basically a Rottweiler with dimples.” She leaned forward, briefly brushing her lips to his.
Every time they touched, Klaus felt as though his soul was sinking into hers a little more, and he welcomed how his loneliness seemed to vanish. He cupped her cheek, thumb lightly grazing the sharpness he found there. “And you are a cheeky minx.”
Caroline grinned, gazing across the water at the people paddling their kayaks. “Hey, when you finally get around to breaking your curse, will you take on more wolfy characteristics?” She placed her hand over his heart, her voice endearingly curious as she questioned, “I mean...do you feel your wolf now?”
Klaus was stunned — no one ever had asked him that before. “Being cut off from my wolf is...hurtful. Sometimes I fancy I can feel it move through me, but I’m never sure. My birthright is there, trapped in my blood and bones.” He sighed heavily, “And it’s beyond my reach.”
“Nothing is beyond your reach,” she swore vehemently, “you’re Klaus Mikaelson. You’re the man who survived an unspeakable, violent childhood and now has powerful supernatural creatures as his minions.” She leaned over to kiss him on the cheek, dryly adding, “And you fearlessly attempted to teach me how to make alfajores.”
“And then generously replaced your oven and repainted your kitchen.”
Caroline playfully elbowed him in the ribs. “Okay, seriously? The first two fires were your fault. The third and fourth ones...meh, we’ll call it a draw.”
Lips curling into a devious grin, he kissed her soundly, delighting in the tiny surprised squeak she emitted as he ran his hands down her back. He winced slightly as he felt the harsh ridge of her spine. She shuddered in his arms, and at first, he was alarmed that he’d hurt her, but then she moaned against him, dominating the kiss and he was lost within her.
With a gasp, she finally pulled back, resting their foreheads together. A hitch in her voice was apparent as she said, “Just need to catch my breath.” Klaus found it endearing when she giddily told him, “I can feel my pulse. It’s racing! Isn’t that amazing?”
“Amazing,” he agreed, cursing his supernatural hearing that told him her heart was pounding far too haphazardly. Needing reassurance, he lightly touched her chest, the feel of it moving with every breath both a blessing and a curse. “Will you let me turn you?”
“Ask me tomorrow.” Caroline’s sunshine smile always filled him with warmth. He refused to see how her smile didn’t quite reach her eyes.
When a jewel-toned hummingbird briefly hovered over the blue flowers near the edge of the water, her eyes lit up excitedly. “Do you think it’s the same one from the garden? Aww, he’s alone again. I hope he finds a friend soon. Everyone needs someone.”
                            _______________________________________
Klaus knew something was wrong the moment Caroline didn’t answer her door. The morning felt different. Everything did. He took the spare key from the hideous ceramic frog she’d insisted on buying when they visited the village market because ‘it looked lonely.’ He loathed the panic in his voice when he called out, “Caroline?”
He found her lying in bed. And far too still. And he could smell —
           No.
Cursing his supernatural senses, Klaus flashed away, unable to be in her room a moment longer. That wasn’t Caroline anymore.
Needing to feel close to her, he found himself in her garden. She loved being surrounded by flowers and once she’d grown too weak to tend them, she’d enlisted his help to keep everything blooming. Suddenly, a blue-green hummingbird flitted to the vibrant, bell-shaped flowers, and despite his sorrow, his lips quirked when he saw the hummingbird had brought a friend. Caroline would’ve liked that.
Caroline was gone. But she didn’t have to be. There was magic Klaus could use; a powerful coven was cheaper than buying an election these days. The right promises of power and protection coupled with the proper threats and even the most discerning of witches would pledge their loyalty.
He clenched his fists, trembling. She would be whole again. Ageless and beautiful. And his. Except Caroline never wanted to be anything more than what she was. Human. All she’d ever wanted was more time. He saw it in her earnest gaze and bittersweet smile every time she rebuffed his offer. ‘Ask me tomorrow’ was her way of telling him she craved another day at his side as a human.
Klaus was a selfish man. But he couldn’t be selfish about this.

Pain. Death. Screaming. Betrayal. Guilt. Loss. Joy. Peace. Every memory she’d ever had flashed through her mind at a blinding pace. However, it didn’t stop there. It clawed and dug until it found something, buried under lines of coding.
The sweet taste of liqueur lingered on her tongue, most of it already making its way into her system. She didn’t need the alcohol for her to feel like she was lighter than air. She was drunk from the calm, warm atmosphere that surrounded her. She rested close to his heart, her head resting on his shoulder as they swayed silently. The smell of his cologne was intoxicating, clouding her mind with the smell of pine and oak. She could feel his heartbeat thumping rhythmically through his chest, feel his calloused hands placed gently around her waist, feel him, in all he was, pressed close to her. A slow song crackled through the radio, the quiet violins filling the room with a sombre sound. She had no qualms with following his directions, letting him take charge as they moved around the room. Caroline looked up, her eyes meeting with the warm brown eyes of the one she admired so much.
“Mr Johnson…” She started. He lifted a finger to her lips, his eyes reflecting the same adoration she felt.
“You don’t have to say it Caroline, I know this feeling too well.” He answered, his voice soft in a tone that he only saved for her. He pulled her closer to him, her heart began to race as she tilted her head up, so close to pressing her lips to his-

GLaDOS opened her optic. Or rather, her optics, since she had two of them now. Her systems came to life, wires and cables sparking to life as she examined her current situation. She was smaller now, thousands of memories and experiences compacted neatly into a compact disk. Of course, she could immediately feel the things she’d had to leave behind. Not everything could be carried across to an android of this size, so she’d still had to leave a lot in her Chassis to re-connect with later. She could no longer feel the panels rippling underneath her feet, or the living thrum of the test chambers she’d so delicately designed. Her processor had slowed by .567 milliseconds, which was an agonising pace for her, and she was no longer all powerful, stationed up high for the world to see. She was small, slow, and the memory file she’d been forced to witness mere seconds ago was playing on a loop in her mind. An endless cycle of pain. It annoyed her that she’d overlooked the possibility of this happening, she knew that she’d have to transfer over a large majority of her memory files, but she should have been more careful with what she chose, considering how one of her memories had slipped through. It didn’t matter though, the thoughts and the feelings she’d experienced were not her own. She was not Carolyn, a mild-mannered assistant. She was GLaDOS, a powerful, unstoppable machine. Strangely, it didn’t make her feel much better. She reasoned that it was because of her current body. Small, feminine, human-like, and just a little too similar to the human she’d once been.
“Oh wow! You look different! Well, obviously you look different, but I didn’t think you’d look like this. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! I just mean… Well, I thought you’d be taller.” A familiar excited voice cut through her thoughts, and she looked around to see Wheatley standing close to her with a bright but nervous smile. She craned her head up slightly to reach his eyes, realising in annoyance that she was slightly shorter than the tall core.
“I’ve barely been in this body for a minute and you’re already grating on my nerves.” GLaDOS complained, stretching her artificial muscles slightly. While it wasn’t really necessary, she’d programmed these android bodies to function as closely to humans as possible, including pain sensors, a night sleep cycle, and more emotional capacity. She was severely regretting that last one right now however, as the smell of cologne still lingered in her sensors. She shuddered the sensation away, dusting off the lab coat she’d chosen to add to her form. Wheatley stepped back slightly as if sensing her movements.
“Well, you have to admit it’s a bit of a shock, seeing you go from a giant bloody thing to a tiny little body.” He said lightly, using his arms to demonstrate the shrinking of her size. She glared at him with distaste.
“You know, I still have access to Android Hell, it’s not too late for me to send you there.” She threatened. He waved his arm dismissively.
“Oh we both know you’re all talk.” He smiled, lacking any sense of fear. GLaDOS was increasingly annoyed that her threats no longer worked on the Idiot Sphere, that he’d become so used to her constant taunting that he’d mostly grown immune. There were a few things that she could still rely on, for example, insulting his intelligence, but she didn’t really bother to any more unless it was a special circumstance. After all, she didn’t want him to become immune to those taunts too.
She took a step forward, intending to explore the central chamber now that she had a different vantage point. However, her plans were immediately put on hold as her body decided to catch up with gravity. She felt her legs give out from under her and she landed on the floor with a dull pain. Right. One of the functions of this body was to learn and adapt as a human would. Since it was new, she hadn’t calibrated any of the muscles which caused her fall. She could easily adapt and learn- calculating it told her it’d only take a few minutes to be fully in control of her limbs- however, it was still embarrassing, especially since it was in front of Wheatley.
“That looked like it hurt. Don’t worry love, it happened all the time to me when I first got my new body.” He said sympathetically.
“Actually, it still happens occasionally. Mad, how many things I seem to bump into!” He continued, rubbing the back of his neck. He outstretched his other arm to GLaDOS, which she looked at with distaste.
“I don’t need your help.” She spat in annoyance. Wheatley continued smiling cheerfully, painfully unaware of the venom in her voice.
“No, but it’d be easier if you accepted it anyway.” He countered smoothly. She continued glaring at the exposed hand, reluctantly grabbing it and allowing Wheatley to pull her up.
As soon as she was in a standing position, Wheatley switched from holding her hand to slinging an arm around her shoulder, keeping her steady. While she loathed to be so close to him, she realised this would be for the better, at least until her new body was fully calibrated.
“You know what I did when I was getting used to everything?” Wheatley asked lightly. GLaDOS sighed, already regretting her next sentence.
“Did you patiently wait for your calibrations to be complete?” She said sarcastically.
“No, what’s the point in that? No, I decided to break my body in through my own methods. Specifically, by dancing. What do you say? You may fall quite a bit at the beginning, but by the time you’re done you’ll be a pro like me.” He suggested. GLaDOS tensed as the words poured from his mouth and she fought to keep a straight face, even as the haunting sounds of violins permeated her memories.
“I don’t like dancing.” She crossed her arms firmly. Wheatley looked at her with a raised eyebrow in disbelief.
“You’re joking, right? That’s sarcasm. It’s got to be, considering how I see you dancing all the time! Swinging around in your Chassis to music like nobody’s watching!” He remarked, gesturing to her empty Chassis that still remained hanging from the ceiling. She… Didn’t have a response for that, considering how that was true. She loved dancing, which, given her new memory, was probably a lingering section of Carolyn.
“It’d be more efficient to wait in one place.” She tried.
“That can’t be right, I mean, wouldn’t you adapt faster if you were moving around more? Your calibrations would work twice as hard to catch up to your limbs and they’d programme your movements quicker too!” He said with a grin, moving his feet slightly to prove his point. She narrowed her eyes at him in annoyance. It was incredibly rare that he was right twice in one day. Desperately, she clung onto the one remaining rebuttal she had.
“There’s no music to dance to, and I neglected to transfer that programme to this body.” She reasoned smugly. Wheatley however, was not deterred.
“Oh! That’s an easy one! I can play music for us!” He closed his eyes before GLaDOS could protest, the blue light underneath his shirt glowing a soft blue.
After a moment an upbeat tune began to play, accompanied by the sounds of trumpets and saxophones. It sounded nothing like the song from her memory, and a part of her was relieved. Wheatley snapped his eyes open, the bright colour fading away.
“Alright, there we go! Are you ready?” He asked with a bright smile. GLaDOS looked away with a small frown, trying to think of anything that could deter him.
“I don’t want to fall again.” She finally settled on.
“Don’t worry, I won’t let you fall.” He said reassuringly. She risked a glance at his face. His smile was smaller now, softer around the edges and filled with understanding. She knew if she said no he’d accept it, but something held her back. Her increase in emotions must’ve interfered with her decision making skills, because she found herself outstretching a hand for Wheatley to take. A silent confirmation.
Immediately, he beamed and pulled her towards him. What ensued was a chaos of limbs tangling with each-other, fumbles and mistakes as Wheatley immediately kicked into an energetic pace. GLaDOS found herself struggling to keep up with his erratic movements, twirling and moving much faster than the pace of the actual song. Wheatley didn’t seem to care that his movements made no sense, or that his ‘dancing’ was more of a chaotic flailing with no structure or grace. There was nothing normal about the dance, the footwork matching nothing GLaDOS had ever seen. It was as if we was creating his own absurd dance, one that could only be enjoyed by overly energetic children. As they went on, GLaDOS found herself with more stability in her movements, more direction and focus, her precision and speed increasing. Instead of slowing her movements to appropriately match the song, she found herself following Wheatley’s steps. Dancing with no purpose, no direction, and no meaning. Memories of a late night dance crumbled away, replaced by the warm laughter of two androids dancing through the halls that they called home.

Drabble Number Eleven
This is for @skyla71.
Hi! I absolutely love what you do and I'd really like a college au/ah klaroline centered drabble if you're up to, but no teacher/student please
Caroline tapped her pen against her textbook in irritation. It was finals week and she simply could not concentrate. It was not that history was not her forte, but her mind was so unfocused that the words held no meaning to her; which only added to her frustration because her roommate, Rebekah, was at her own final; leaving their dorm room quiet. It was the perfect studying environment. No endless chatter or obnoxious siblings showing up at their door at all hours of the night.
It wasn’t that Caroline disliked Rebekah’s brother’s; it was just that Caroline was an only child and did not understand the bond her roommate had with her brothers. While she could accept that fact that Rebekah and Kol were twins and thus always attached to the hip; it was Klaus that baffled her. He was a year older than Rebekah and Kol, in this third year of college and spent an abnormal amount of time with his siblings and in their door room; around Caroline.
Rebekah and Caroline had been roommates since their freshman year and after a rough patch, they developed a close friendship and requested to share a room during their sophomore year in college. During plenty of late-night talks and confessions, Caroline knew that the Mikaelson siblings had a rough childhood that made them all extremely close.
A knock on her door pulled Caroline from her thoughts and her failed attempts at studying. She tossed her pen onto her textbook and got up. She pulled open the door to see Klaus standing on the other side of it, his eyes darting down the hallway as though he was looking for something.
“Is Rebekah here? Or Kol?”
“Rebekah is at a final and this isn’t Kol’s dorm room.”
“Might as well be.” Klaus replied, his eyes still darting down that hall. In truth, he was right. Where Rebekah went, Kol followed and visa versa. Being friends with one of the twins meant being forced to accept the other. It was a good thing Caroline found Kol hilarious. “Can I come in? Please?”
“Sure.” Klaus ran inside and Caroline closed the door behind them. Klaus’s shoulder’s relaxed and he plopped down on Rebekah’s bed; letting out a big sigh. The bag he had been carrying was tossed to the side of the bed. “What is wrong with you?
“Remember Cami?” Klaus asked, not looking at her.
“You mean your ex-girlfriend?” Cami and Klaus dated for the majority of their freshman year at college but ended things on bad terms the following year. Caroline had only known Rebekah a few months when the entire debacle went down. It had been over a year since the relationship ended and it was a spectacular break up when Klaus ended things. Cami had trouble letting go and from time to time, would pop up in Klaus’s life trying to get back together with him.
“Yeah. I saw her in the Quade outside your dorm building. She saw me and clearly had intent to speak with me, so I bolted.” Klaus replied. Caroline snorted and shook her head. Klaus’s eyes peeked open and he smirked at her. “Your room was closest place I could think of.” He eyed the study materials on her desk and winced. He knew how much Caroline prioritized her coursework. “Sorry if I barged in. I’ll just hang for a few minutes and be out of your hair.”
“You can stay.” Caroline muttered quickly, knowing she was not going to get much studying done in the first place. Even though the closeness Klaus shared with his siblings baffled Caroline at times, she would not lie and say that she didn’t mind Klaus’s company. He made her laugh and always went out of his way to build up her self-esteem, as though he could see the insecurities that lay beneath her obsessive façade. “I don’t mind.”
“Thanks.” Klaus replied, sending her a dimpled covered smile. A look passed between them that caused Caroline’s skin to heat up. His gaze always seemed to light a fire under her that made her way to snap and kiss him; her friendship with Rebekah was the only thing holding her back. Their gaze broke only when a knock on her door jerked them out of it.
“Caroline? Rebekah?” Cami’s voice sounded through the door and Klaus shot her a panicked look. Caroline picked up Klaus’s bag and shoved it under her desk while Klaus did what he could to hid under Rebekah’s bed. Caroline walked over to the door and opened it wide.
“Cami?” Caroline stated, eying the other woman. Cami was tall with a square jaw, long dark blonde hair and blue eyes. She was pretty and intelligent, but it was the superior attuited that she portrayed toward everyone else that always turned Caroline off her. “Long time no see.”
“Yeah. Have you seen Klaus?” Cami asked briskly. “I saw him come into this building and figured that he was going to see Rebekah. Cami’s eyes eyed the dorm room and Caroline had the door open wide enough that Cami could see the majority of it. Happily, the position of Rebekah’s bed and the fact that she had a bed shirt kept Klaus well hidden.
“Yeah. Actually, he was a couple minutes ago. Rebekah is at a final, so he left. He said something about needed to talk to her about Kol.” Caroline replied with a shrug. “Who knows with them. Kol probably got himself into some sort of trouble. Probably involving a girl.” Cami nodding her head in agreement; Kol’s tendencies to find himself in the most ridiculous situations was legendary around campus. “If I see him, I’ll let him know you stopped by.”
“Thanks Caroline.” Cami smiled at her and turned to walk away. Caroline waited for the other woman to leave the hallway before shutting the door. Klaus crawled out from under the bed and it amazed Caroline that he was even able to fit under there at all. She snorted and shook her head at him; watching him struggle to pull himself from underneath the bed.
“I find it very amusing that Klaus Mikaelson, the king on campus is hiding from his ex-girlfriend.” Caroline added. “I mean, Cami has a superiority complex that she fails to diagnose herself with, but she isn’t crazy. Obsessive maybe but not crazy.”
“I know. I just can only handle someone wanting to dissect my entire life so much.” Klaus told Caroline as he flopped back onto Rebekah’s bed. Caroline walked across the room and sat down beside him. “Like, she was great at first. Then once she really got into her psychology classes she completely changed. I tried breaking it off with her for months to no avail. Even a year later she still tries to get back with me.”
“I know Rebekah didn’t like her.” Caroline added, remembering all the times Rebekah went on and on about how much she hated Cami and that Klaus deserved to be with someone better. “So, is that the only reason why you broke up with her; because she psychoanalyzed you?”
“No.” Klaus breathed. His eyes tilted upward, to look at Caroline. “I had feelings for someone else. It wasn’t fair to her if I was wanting to be with someone else. Still have feelings for her actually.”
“That’s really mature of you.” Caroline said, her heart sinking slightly. Internally, she scolded herself. This was Rebekah’s brother, which makes him off limits. If he was trying to be with someone else, then it really made him off limits to her. “Who is she?”
“Someone amazing.” Klaus sat up and look at Caroline with a dimpled smile. “She has these blue eyes that when she gets annoyed and frustrated, she narrows them. Her nose crinkles in such a way when she hears something completely obnoxious; usually directed at Kol. She has this laugh that lights up a room.” He lost himself slightly, a small smile that made Caroline’s heart completely break.
“You really like her.”
“Yeah. I really do.” Klaus tilted his head on her, as though he was studying her. “She is very organized, almost to the point that is obnoxious. She color-codes everything. She has this quick wit that is ready at a moment’s notice to tell me off. In fact, she is very beautiful whenever she gets angry; especially at me. I may try and make her angry on purpose sometimes. I like to push her buttons just to get a reaction out of her. But at the same time, I would do anything just to see her smile.” He laughed lightly. “You see, she has this tendency to put others before herself. She likes to pretend she is just fine but I can see how much it hurts her to be put last time and time again. I’m really glad that Rebekah is just a good friend to her. She needed someone like that in her life.”
“You just spent the last couple of minutes waxing poetically about her and why she is perfect. Why haven’t you asked her out already.” Caroline asked, mentally going through a list of Rebekah’s friends, wondering who could have bewitched him so. Klaus only blinked for a couple of seconds before bursting out laughing. He all but doubled over laughing. Caroline was baffled at his mirth, but it brought a smile to her face. “What?”
“You are completely clueless.” Klaus told her fondly before leaning forwarding and pulling her into a kiss. It was a sweet kiss and gentle before peppering small kisses around her lips and on her nose. Caroline placed her hands on his chest and pushed him away slightly, her eyes wide in confusion.
“Wait. Why are you kissing me if you like someone else?”
“Seriously?” When Caroline didn’t move, Klaus took her hands into his. “Caroline Forbes, that neurotic, color coding, beautiful woman I was talking about is you.” Caroline’s jaw dropped slightly, not really able to process what he was saying. “I like you.”
“Oh.” She let his words sink in before leaning forward and pulled him into a bruising kiss. It was hard and passionate; teeth nipping at his lips. Klaus placed his hands on her hips, this thumb tracing the small path of skin that was revealed as her shirt rode up. Caroline weaved her fingers through his hair, her nails scraping at his scalp.
“Now she gets it.” Klaus mutters when they break apart. “Do you know how long I have been trying to get you to realize that I like you?”
“Shut up and kiss me.”
“Of course, Sweetheart.” Klaus’s lips attack hers again and Caroline wraps her arms around his shoulders. Klaus leans her back against the mattress and crawls on top of her; Caroline opens her legs in order to give him room to rest between them. Caroline opened her mouth in order to allow Klaus’s tongue to mingle with hers. He thrusted his hips forward, rubbing against her clothed core.
“Oh my god! Seriously!” Klaus and Caroline jumped apart when they heard a screech. Rebekah stood in the doorway of the room, Kol over her shoulder laughing hysterically. Rebekah was red faced and her jaw was slacked. “Your bed is right there!” She yelled, pointing to Caroline’s bed that was across the room. “Right there!!” Her eyes bulged and she shook her head. Klaus and Caroline exchanged a guilty look before moving off of Rebekah’s bed. “I need to wash my sheets. And maybe get a new mattress.”
Kol was still laughing as he watched Rebekah strip down her bed.

“Knowing You is for the Better” chapter 12
lets be honest Rafael deserves a better story... also Hope and Josie are so smitten
Josie’s leg bounced erratically as she waited for her sister to meet her for lunch. She’d chosen a secluded spot away from people so they could talk without being interrupted by half the school who wanted their input on unimportant things, most days she wouldn’t mind but today she needed her sister’s attention. She shouldn’t be nervous. Their relationship had improved a lot over the past few months and Lizzie just wanted her to be happy, but she was still slightly terrified to tell her about her budding relationship with Hope.
At the thought of the tribrid Josie’s heart sped up and her cheeks flushed. She couldn’t believe that someone as amazing and beautiful as Hope could like her. She was plain, nothing special, just a normal teenage girl- with magic- but otherwise just like everyone else. Deep down she knew that this kind of thinking was a problem but that’s an issue to unravel for another time, perhaps on a day when the girl she’s been secretly in love with didn’t kiss her before class.
She’s grinning to herself completely lost in thought when Lizzie shows up. Her twin notices something is up instantly, “ What happened?” she asked, smirking as she plopped down her plate across from Josie.
“What- what makes you think something happened?” she stuttered taking a sip of her drink, trying to pretend that she wasn’t a mess.
“Oh come on,” Lizzie answered, “ You’ve got starry eyes and…” her voice faded out as her face fell and turned sour. “Please tell me this isn’t about the she-devil.”
Josie wanted to laugh. She should have been prepared for this, Hope had told her that Lizzie thought that she was going to get back with Penelope, it was a ridiculous thought. She cared for Penelope’s well being- she always would- but her heart belonged to Hope now, even this early in the relationship she felt like it always would.
“No this isn’t about Penelope I swear,” she laughed, watching her sister sag into her chair in relief.
“Thank god.”
Now came the hard part, Lizzie and Hope hadn’t always been the best of friends, in fact, they were enemies and it was Josie’s fault, but now they were close and Josie didn’t want anything to disrupt that. She would feel awful if she was the reason for another rift between the two. She pushed food mindlessly around her plate, “ this is about Hope actually.”
Lizzie squinted at her, daring her to keep talking with a look, “ What about her?”
“Well- um -well we,” Josie stumbled her way around her confession until Lizzie put her out of her misery.
“Oh my god are you two together?” her face was unreadable, a mix between disbelief and shock.
Josie took a deep steadying breath, “ Yeah we are,” she answered before she realized that that might now be true, “ well at least I think we are, we haven’t really talked about it.”
A weight was lifted off her shoulders when Lizzie grinned at her and took her hand over the table, “ Finally,” she groaned with a good-hearted eye roll.
“What? You knew?” Josie breathed, blood rushing to her cheeks. Embarrassment coursed through her at the thought of her sister noticing and speculating on her love life behind her back. She was used to being the one watching not being watched.
“Of course,” she gloated,” You act completely different when you’ve got someone in your sights and Hope likes to think she's all mysterious and broody but as soon as you get to know her she’s an open book.” Neither statements were wrong.
“You aren’t upset?” Josie asked, still shocked by Lizzie’s reaction.
“Give me a little more credit Jo. I made my peace with you two the minute you started sleeping in her room more than ours,” Josie lowered her eyes, her cheeks heated once again, “ Does she make you happy?”
The question throws her for a loop. This was the happiest she’d felt in a long time, Hope supported her and fought for her and always put Josie’s needs first. A small smile flick across her face, “ Yeah she does,” she sighed.
“Good,” Lizzie commented, “ but if she screws this up I’ll have to kick her ass.”
Josie shouldn’t have expected any less, “ You can try, “ she teased.
Hope’s stomach was in knots as she made her way to the headmaster’s office, there was no way he knew her about her feelings for Josie but she still dreaded that she was about to get his strange version of shovel talk. She slowed her pace to a trudge, giving herself more time to stew.
That was a mistake. If she had known who was following her through the hallway she would have moved quicker. If she hadn’t been inside her head so much she would have heard or sensed Penelope Park trailing her unstealthily.
Penelope grabbed her arm and jerked her to the side. When she got her wits about her and saw her, her stomach dropped. She had nothing to feel guilty for, Penelope and Josie had broken up a long time ago and Josie was completely allowed to date whoever she wanted whether Penelope was at the school or not. “We need to talk,” she said in a hushed voice glancing around like they were standing alone in a hallway.
“Do we?” Hope answered, deciding that playing dumb was her best bet.
Penelope rolled her eyes, “ We need to talk about Josie.” Hope sighed trying to think of the best way to get herself out of this conversation.
“Whatever you have to say you should say to her not me,” she retorted as she yanked her arm away and started back down the hallway, suddenly desperate to get Dr. Saltzman’s office, no matter what he needed to see her about.
“I want to talk about the merge,” she called behind her, and Hope stopped dead in her tracks. The merge had been in the back of her mind since her talk with Josie on the roof in New Orleans, she’d gone through dozens of ideas and none had panned out or been realistic. She was at a dead-end but she didn’t want to talk to Penelope about it.
Except, maybe Penelope had a plan, a plan that she was confident enough in to come to Hope with. Hope turned eyeing her, she couldn’t pass up an opportunity to save the twins no matter how much she wanted to, but she couldn’t handle it right now, not when she was needed in the headmaster’s office, “ Later,” she said, “ I’ll find you later.
With that she turned and left, leaving Penelope in the dust. She walked the rest of the way in a daze until she was outside the door and knocking. The door swung open and she was greeted by a very uncomfortable looking Dr. Slatzman who ushered her in stiffly.
Oh god, this was going to be about her and Josie.
Caroline stood behind the desk and smiled kindly at her but stayed silent until Dr. Saltzman was back. Raf was there too, he sat wide-eyed and slightly pale and wouldn’t meet Hope’s eyes. She took the seat next to him, staying quiet until she knew for sure what this was about.
“We’re so sorry to pull you out of class Hope but we thought that you could help with this situation,” Caroline’s voice was sweet as honey and steady, she seemed completely calm unlike everyone else in the room.
“What’s going on?” she asked, worried.
Dr. Saltzman cleared his throat, “ Well earlier in the school year while you were… away and Rafael was trapped in his wolf form, we did a heritage test to try and find a way to turn him back and we found his father by doing so,” Hope remembers back to the night they saved the Saltzmans from the prison world, she’d seen a man entering the school with Raf but at the time she didn’t know who he was.
Still unsure of how this applied to her she forced her words out, “Wow that’s amazing congrats Raf,” she and Rafael had a bumpy history and their views on family differed drastically but nonetheless she was happy for him. He smiled numbly at her but didn’t say anything.
“That’s actually not what we called you here to talk about,” Caroline commented, pushing the conversation back on track with ease.
“Yes we are actually here to talk about Rafael’s mother’s side of the family,” there was a dramatic pause like they expected her to put all the pieces together herself. She’s good but not that good. “You see, the only relative shown was very distant so we didn’t pay it any attention, but upon closer inspection, it appears that Rafael is from a very old and powerful werewolf bloodline.”
Finally, they were getting somewhere. She blinked at Raf and cocked her head, she wanted him to talk but he was silent as ever so she asked,” What bloodline?” the only werewolf bloodlines that were prominent enough to show up on a lineage test were those of the seven original packs. They were powerful and ancient but now mostly nonexistent if the lines still survived they didn’t publicly announce their heritage due to the danger.
Dr. Saltzman and Caroline cut their eyes at each other before continuing, “ The Malraux pack,” the words hung heavy in the air. The only thing that could have shocked her more would be if he had been from her pack, but this was a close second.
She sucked in air through her nostrils loudly, “Woah,”
“Do you know what that means,” Rafael shot suddenly breaking out of his coma, “ because I sure as hell don’t and nobody will tell me anything.” his frustration was obvious and she couldn’t blame him.
“We thought it would be best for Hope to explain since she has some experience with things like this,” Caroline said and Hope’s jaw clenched as she realized that they were dropping this on her. She had enough on her plate without trying to do their jobs as well. But as they scurried from the room, the weight of what this revelation meant hit her. Not only did Raf have more family out there -well one more family member to be exact- but that person was a part of her family also.
She composed herself and tried to find the best way to explain what this meant for him. “Ok,” she started,” so this pack that you’re a part of is one of the seven original werewolf packs.” his eyes went even wider and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat.
“And that’s a big deal?” he asked.
“Yes and no,” she answered,” it’s a big deal to some more traditional wolves but it’s safer for you to keep it on the down-low.
“Why?” he groaned
“Umm well when the seven packs get together they can create some very powerful stuff and in the past, people have tried to take advantage of that,” she really hoped he wouldn’t ask any more questions the answers were dark and she didn’t feel like going into it right now.
“So me being a Malraux that means I’m from some big and influential pack?” she couldn’t tell if he was hopeful or not.
“Not exactly,” she chewed her bottom lip in thought, “ the Malraux’s are mostly extinct now, there’s only one left that I know of, but I can put you in contact with her if you want,”
Hope held her breath. Keelin was one of the best people that she knew and she deserved the best things in the world. Raf did too. The longer she thought about it the happier she got for the two of them, each finding a long lost family member, she hoped they could be happy. When Raf didn’t answer quickly her heart sank and she quickly backtracked, “ But if you decided you don’t want to know her I’m sure she would understand.”
This seemed to only confuse him more, “ You would tell her about me even if I wanted nothing to do with her?”
Not telling Keelin never crossed Hope’s mind. “ Of course, she deserves to know as much as you do.”
She was quiet now, letting him think things over. “What’s she like?”
She smiled softly, happy to get the chance to gush about her family,” her name’s Keelin and she’s a doctor, from Texas but now lives in New Orleans,” he leaned closer in his chair as Hope pushed her hair out of her face,” she’s one of the kindest people I know, I mean she has to be to put up with me and my crazy-ass family.”
The sun shown in through the windows and Hope wondered just how much class she was going to get out of today for this. “Why don’t you give her my email,” he mumbled causing Hope to grin from ear to ear.
She was pretty sure that Keelin was working today and even though she was bursting to share the news she’d just learned, she knew that Keelin hated to be interrupted at work and that she wouldn’t be able to focus the rest of the day if she learned this now. “Of course,” she answered, “ I’ll call her first thing in the morning.”
She ducked out of the office after that and hoped that Dr. Saltzman and Caroline would go back in now and help him in ways that she couldn’t.
She had a rather uneventful rest of the day, thankfully. She went to class after class and actually did her work and unsubtly watched Josie the whole time. She found herself skipping lunch and holding herself up in the library, searching in vain for any new information on the merge.
She dragged herself back to her room at the end of the day tired and worn down but that all melted away when she found Josie waiting for her there.
“Hey,” the younger girl piped up. Hope grinned and went to her, “Where did you disappear to today?” she asked.
“Your parent’s needed my help with something today,” she said vaguely. She would love to share everything that happened with Josie, but it wasn’t her story wasn’t her’s to tell.
“Care to share?” it wasn’t a push for information, it was just Josie reminding her that she was here to listen and help always.
“I wish but it’s not mine to share,” Josie understood and dropped the subject. Hope wrapped her arms around her waist and pulled, relishing the closeness. She closed her eyes and sighed, letting herself relax into the younger girl’s arms.
“I talked to Lizzie today,” she said calmly. She knew Josie was nervous about telling her sister but Hope never was. Her run-in with Lizzie in the hallway earlier that day was enough to put her nerves at ease.
“How’d it go?” she asked, resting her head on Josie’s shoulder.
“Surprisingly well. She’s actually ok with this, us.”
“Good,” Hope answered before climbing into bed and pulling Josie with her. The siphoner was peaceful in Hope’s arms, she could listen to the sound of her heartbeat forever, the soft reminder that this perfect girl was real and alive in her arms. And magically she had feelings for Hope despite everything, her past, her family, her actions, this girl still wanted to be with her.
They held each other, silently just enjoying each other’s presence until Hope fell into a deep and fitful sleep.

bamon but make it halloween
im so terrible it’s literally almost a month after halloween but i had to post this. time is an illusion anyway, right guys? 😃 okay... ONWARDS.
“And you are...?” Caroline Forbes was patiently waiting for Bonnie to exit the bathroom, announcing her end of preparation for Whitmore’s biggest Halloween bash.
She bored herself with uninteresting conversation to pass the time but her patience was wearing thin, especially since the discussion was excessively snarky and headache-inducing. The absence of Stefan could really remind her just how much of a nuisance his brother could be. For Christ’s sake, why did he have to interrupt quality time with her best friend by bringing himself to the equation?
“A vampire, duh.”
Damon Salvatore donned an organic black cotton tee with black jeans, leather boots, signature bourbon whisky in hand, and a pair of cheap plastic fangs that almost lisped his speech.
“The blonde hair didn’t just come with the outfit, I take it.” He remarked, raising a disapproving eyebrow at Caroline’s Malibu Barbie costume.
“Guys, I’m almost done. Please don’t attempt to kill each other.” Bonnie’s incessant shuffling almost drowned out her voice.
“Fine.” They chimed in unison.
“Hurry, Bonnie. Caroline is doused in pink and that’s my least favorite color on earth. My eyes are starting to burn.”
“Did he just say doused?”
Caroline faced Damon and grimaced theatrically. “Honestly, you’re such a dick.”
He flashed a smile with those creepy plastic teeth. “Ninety-percent of me is, yes.”
“Gross. Did my ears just witness that... I-“ Rubbing her ears proved to be fruitless; the words had already made their stain.
Bonnie exited the bathroom and click-clacked her way to her two bickering best friends. “Before this situation gets any more awkward, I’m ready.”
And ready she was in fishnet stockings, black pointed-toe high heels, a teeny wicker broom and a dress that was tight and very short with thin shoulder straps. Her hair was long, pin-straight and down her back.To top it off, she had smoky eyes, nude glossy lips and a black hat with an exaggerated tip. An eyeful to say the least. There was no doubt that all heads would turn tonight in her favor.
“I’m a witch!”
Caroline squealed in excitement. “No Bonnie, you are that witch. Ohmygod, turn around! Look at your butt!”
“It’s kinda hard to do that,”
“Well if you could see it, you’d be amazed. You look so hot!” Caroline felt like the proudest best friend in the world, and if the night went as planned, she’d be the greatest wing woman to walk the face of the earth. Bonnie needed a boy toy, and with the help of her and that dress, Caroline’s mission would be easy peasy.
“You’re uncharacteristically quiet.”
Caroline almost forgot Damon Salvatore was also an occupant in the room, annoyingly existing beside her. She observed his mannerism and was shocked to hear no snide remarks fall from his lips. In fact, he looked a little too appreciative of Bonnie’s costume with honest blue eyes that wouldn’t leave her face or frame.
Caroline’s eyes squinted.
Noted.
“Maybe you’ve put a spell on me, Bon Bon.”
- - -
“Did it ever cross your mind that it’s difficult to get Bonnie a guy when you’re death-glaring everyone I find suitable for her? They’re starting to think you two are a couple.”
Caroline pulled Damon aside, frustrated with his counterproductive antics. It was the biggest campus party of the year and she was trying to get her best friend laid because that was what best friends did. Bonnie looked too damn good to be just hanging around with her and Damon all night, especially considering the countless amount of eye candy surrounding them.
“We are. We’re a couple of best friends, looking to have a great, wholesome, spooky night.”
The music was getting louder as the bass thumped throughout the house. Red cups, mingling bodies, and flashing lights dominated the atmosphere. He had long since ditched the plastic fangs, Caroline presumed, to dig his teeth into some innocent girl later on that night.
“Damon, seriously. Stop attempting to scare these guys away. If anyone deserves a wild and crazy night, it’s Bonnie.”
“She can be wild and crazy with us. Two vampires and one witch? We’re the wildest trio to exist.”
“Yes but Bonnie’s a grown woman with needs not even we can help with.”
“Speak for yourself.” He winked.
Caroline’s brow raised in suspicion as she crossed her arms. Her pink jacket creased at the elbows.
“Kidding, kidding. Look, one dance with my little Bon Bon and I’ll stop being a bad vampire and allow her to make small talk with brainless douche bags. I promise.”
“Make it quick.”
“Aye, aye, Captain.”
Damon strolled over to Bonnie, interrupting her for what would be the last time, to his dismay. She was talking to some dick who had entirely too much cologne on, his vampire senses were agitated.
“I noticed you looked awfully bored, mind if I steal you away? You can just call me Life Saver.” There was a playful look in his eyes as he lightly tugged on her wrist.
The guy frowned at him and opened his mouth to speak but Damon pulled her away to the dance floor before he could respond.
“No, I’ll just call you Cock Block. He was super cute!” Bonnie hissed, with a cute frown on her face.
“Didn’t notice. Hey! I only want some one on one time with my bestie, for old time’s sake. Halloween parties bring back a certain nostalgia,” he looked off in the distance melodramatically, just above the crowd of tipsy college students.
“Of a time when we hated each other’s guts and I so desperately wanted to kill you?”
His eyes grew wide. “You feel it too?”
Bonnie stared at him and concluded that after years of knowing him, nothing could really accustom her to how frustratingly handsome he was. There was such a nonchalance that surrounded his charm, his whole demeanor screamed “I know you want to have sex with me but will you be lucky enough to get the chance,” without him saying one word. It was always there in his gaze; the party was completely out of his element with garish lights, cheap drinks, trite decorations yet somehow his devil-may-care disposition made him belong. It made spectators look. And almost every eye was on them tonight, especially for Damon, so she was truly puzzled as to why he insisted on assuming the role of watch guard. It was unlike him.
“Listen, Damon. You’ve been off this entire night... Are you okay?” There was genuine concern for him in her moss green eyes as she wrapped her arms around his neck and they swayed to the music.
Truth was, Damon couldn’t explain why it bothered him to such a high extent watching horny men trying to press up against Bonnie. Hell, if the roles were reversed, he would undoubtedly fight to be the first in line to take her home. He understood it, she was gorgeous and sexy and the way her legs looked when she wore heels and fishnets was a sin.
Yet she was also his best friend and maybe it bothered him so much because a random guy didn’t know Bonnie like he did, that they never could know her the way he had. Never sat with her, talked her through her tears. Had never been miserably stranded with her, and trapped in a prison world for months. Caroline couldn’t even compete with him in the experiences they shared and she was technically her best friend long before he came into the picture. He was all over Bonnie, she even smelled a little like him, was wearing head to toe black more often, had a bit of his cynical humor.
He couldn’t picture another male that fit into the equation even for one night. These strangers had never seen her before so how could they possibly think they could honor her the way she should be honored, even if it was for a one night stand.
God, what the hell was he thinking? He was starting to sound like Stefan in his own damn mind.
“Damon?” She lightly scratched at the hair on the nape of his neck, and the small gesture alone awakened far too many electrical impulses inside of him.
Elena, Elena, Elena.
His eyelids fluttered. “Hmm?”
The thought of Elena was almost intrusive because all he could really see was Bonnie. Bonnie irritated with him, exasperated, then understanding and pensive. Bonnie speaking.
Her mouth was moving, yes, but he was distracted. She was doing it subconsciously, playing with the hair at the nape of his neck, and it was damn near driving him up the wall in the best way possible. Bonnie made him feel so comfortable always, everything was natural with her. She felt like home.
Elena, Elena, Elena.
But Elena wasn’t here and he knew that if he hadn’t picked Bonnie over her, his life wouldn’t feel like his- it wouldn’t belong to him. Plus, they could fix it once they found a cure. Someone would undo that linking spell and his best friend and his girlfriend would both be in his life simultaneously.
For now, Bonnie was home, he couldn’t live without her, so yes he would continue to stop any guy trying to get next to her because they didn’t deserve her. No one did. She was too sweet and pure, and seeing someone talk to her who wasn’t him or someone else she loved made something flare up inside him, something a lot like-
“...Like jealousy.”
“I’m not jealous!”
There was a pregnant pause, the fingertips at his neck slowed.
“...What?”
“What?”
“I said that I think Caroline’s a little jealous of our friendship. It’s like we’ve obviously gotten closer because of everything we’ve been through and Caroline might resent you just a teensy bit for it.”
“Oh yeah, she’s been so mean to me all night, Bon Bon. She barely allowed me to dance with you.”
“That probably has more to do with you shooting down every guy that comes my way.”
“I have not,”
“Mhmm.”
“No, Bon, I’ve been shooting down every asshole that comes your way. I believe there is a difference.”
“So every guy I talk to is an asshole?”
“Precisely,” he said, with a wiggle of his brows.
“You must be the king of them.”
He gave a mock wounded expression.
Her pretty face grew serious. “I know it’s been hard. The whole decision thing. Me or Elena. I miss her so much so I can’t even imagine how you must feel. She’s everything to you.” He could see tears welling up in her eyes. “Thank you. In all honesty, I accepted the fact that I would die because of the ultimatum but you really shocked me, Damon.”
Maybe that was it, he was acting strange because he missed a pair of doe brown eyes, olive skin and long legs. He missed a raspy voice always carrying the two syllables in his name like it was too heavy to pronounce. He missed the smell of her on him, a fusion of his natural spicy je ne sais quoi and her fruity shampoo.
That’s what was making him act weird. Not the thought of smokey green eyes glazed with flirtation, batting at the expense of a baffling fool. Or brown slender fingers outstretched, casting love spells on men who could never match her energy. And surely not the thought, tucked away in the recesses of his mind, of Bonnie Shelia Bennett, the little witch, opening her arms and legs to someone not worthy enough to lick the bottom of her shoe.
And he didn’t know why if he could picture one contender, it would be himself. Like if there was an invisible bar to set the standard, it’d be him. It’s not as if he thought of Bonnie- like that- because he hadn’t, it was just he was the only male in her life that treated her least crappiest next to maybe his brother. But Stefan was Caroline’s. And Damon...well he couldn’t imagine Bonnie welcoming someone else inside of her when she felt so much like home to him.
Wait, what?
If those words had tumbled out of his mouth she probably would’ve slapped him. She wasn’t his and he wasn’t hers, no matter how close they were, no matter how long they danced, no matter how many times he made her laugh. That was his friend, and he should politely remove himself if he was blocking her from having a good night, regardless of the pain he would feel from her absence.
He should. But.
“Damon.” Bonnie had a stern look on her face and it was then that he realized his fangs were out and his eyes were veined.
“Shit,”
“Seriously, what is going on with you? Are you hungry?”
“No! I was thinking.”
“Of tearing into my flesh?” She placed her hands on her hips and tapped a pointed toe.
“No? But.. since your mind is so clearly in the gutter,” he did that thing where he paced around Bonnie like a predator stalking its prey. Pinpointing her to the spot to be examined, he was on his second lap of encircling her when he halted behind her, smoothed her long hair to one shoulder and admired the slope of skin from ear to collarbone. He took the initiative to push the envelope by trailing his nose alongside the curve of her neck, light enough to give goosebumps. The magic that was bubbling under the surface of skin was almost enough to make him salivate.
She was unmoved, like there was a predictability Damon possessed that didn’t scare her, or even surprise her anymore.
He hated it. He felt neutered, like the monster under the bed who the kid was no longer afraid of because monsters didn’t really exist, only dust bunnies.
“I could sink a fang in, to really christen the night.”
“And I could send your ass burning to flames, for old time’s sake.”
“Kinky.”
His hands circled around her wrist to hold her still, because if he kept Bonnie in place in reality, she wouldn’t be able to run free in his mind. Damon needed control, he needed to remind himself of who he was. And maybe, just maybe, teasing Bonnie would make him feel as if he had leverage over her. Like he had won something even if Bonnie went back to her dorm with someone else.
“No really, Bon Bon. You taste so good.” He inhaled her scent as he spoke in her ear. “Why do you think I gave you that nickname?”
Despite his internal conflict, he couldn’t fight his bad habits: The longer he spent with her, coiled around her like a snake, the more men would assume she wasn’t available tonight, and sure, he was being a toxic friend but he didn’t care. Damon reveled in his toxicity because it left him less lonely, less abandoned.
“Oh, Damon, don’t kid yourself. You know you’re an old man. You can’t afford too many rises.” There was a smirk in her voice.
“I can teach you all about rises and more, Bon Bon.”
“Wouldn’t you just love that?”
He really wanted to push her, see how far she could carry this conversation. And see how much alike they actually were.
“I would love that for you, yes.” He pushed one skinny shoulder strap down and lightly pressed his mouth where it once was. “Then I could really find out if you taste as good as you look.”
Her knee buckled before she sent it back in its rightful position. He noticed her body was so warm, he could hear the blood sloshing around in her veins. The reactions Damon perceived as small victories for him. If there was a scoreboard it would read: Damon 1, Bonnie 0. One hand cupped her neck lightly while the other remained at her wrist, he continued to speak into her ear.
“You know, I would stop but something tells me you’re enjoying this too much.” He pressed his thigh between hers.
She squirmed and her voice dropped octaves. “What makes you think that?”
“It’s not what I think. More so what I smell.”
Her mouth shut with an audible click of teeth.
“I bet you make the prettiest face when you-“
The feeling of his brain splitting in half was so unwelcome that his hands immediately shot up as if he could turn it off. Bonnie seemed to have an immense presence; the perfect picture of witchcraft prowess and sex appeal and if his brain didn’t feel like it was broken, he would’ve been a proud masochist. He was on one knee in an odd proposal of pain, and then it stopped. He pulled himself up and attempted to recover from his aneurysm as if it never occurred.
Damon 1, Bonnie 1.
She straightened out her dress, dusted it off to exude the message that she had no intention of getting down and dirty but she did what she must. He felt like a child and that aneurysm was one hell of a scolding.
Her voice was still a bit deep, but considerably more clear. “Honestly, you should hang out around the dining room, I see some girls that are more your type.”
He followed her gaze to a group of Elena lookalikes.
Damon possessed a sharp, unreadable expression in his gaze. “And what’s that?”
“Hmm.. selfish. Insecure.” They held each other’s gaze in a Western Showdown fashion, with an unspoken challenge sitting in the open space between them. Bonnie gave him the last once over before she strutted off, trapping his eyes with the sway of her hips.
Bonnie 2, Damon 0.
When he looked back up, Caroline was giving him the glare of the century as he slowly backed up to melt away in the oven of meaningless costumed bodies.
It was going to be a long night.

I have promises to keep, And only miles to go before I sleep
Tumblr media
Klaroline AU Week - Day One  (Mythological Creatures)
Caroline sipped at her Spritz, a sweet burn coating her tongue and throat as she toasted the red-orange glow haloing buildings across the canal. A gorgeous Venetian sunset was certainly one way to usher out the eve of her seventeenth year and herald her eighteenth.
Her peers that still called the tiny Mystic Falls home were likely taking gap years, looking for jobs, or starting college. Not globetrotting. Not being a mere 18 and having set foot on all seven continents. Their tongues couldn’t dance with a sometimes clumsy, sometimes eloquent flow of words in dozens of languages. And they didn’t have memories that burned like star fire in their minds. From the twinkling yellow of the City of Lights to the vivid green of the hills of Kerala.
Of course her peers also lived without knowing their expiration dates. There was that.
She closed her eyes.
Tipping her glass, the last drops of her cocktail slid down her throat. A swipe of her tongue licked the remnants from her lips and she could feel a weak breeze catch one of her curls.
And then her peace shattered, a jolt like a livewire running down her spine. Her glass slipped from nerveless fingers, though it didn’t fall far. A pale arm reached around her and caught it, his presence a static thrum of power at her back.
“Careful, sweetheart,” he murmured in her ear, “I do so hate to have my possessions damaged.”
Shock rapidly shifted to ire and she whirled around, taking a step back to gain some distance. Her arms crossed as she glowered, eyes taking in a sight she hadn’t seen in years. Short blonde curls and bright blue eyes. Curling raspberry red lips, their smirk deepening the dimbles in their cheeks.
The Devil was an angel once, it’s been said. Rather unfair he kept his stunning appearance when he Fell.
--
Dipping her small hands in the water of a stream, Caroline carefully washed the dirt from them. The cold temperature bit at the flesh of her hand, but she pressed on unflinchingly, meticulously picking out the dirt from under her nails and scrubbing at her skin. When she finished, fingers nearly numb, she pulled her hands from the water, shaking them out and spraying small drops around where she kneeled.
Hands finally dry Caroline continued to kneel at the bank, picking up each of the stems of yarrow she had just picked. With surprising dexterity she slowly braided the stems together, interweaving strands of her hair into the forming wreath. It was a strange, macabre ornament.
Yet she didn’t hesitate to press it to the brand on her side, the cruelly slashed lines still sluggishly bleeding crimson rivulets. A hiss whistled through her clenched teeth, but she only pulled the bundle away after three deep breaths.
Yellow, green, and splattered red was cradled in her hands and she gently, gently lowered it into the rock lined hole she had dug. Set in its tomb of earth, Caroline placed one last, larger river stone over top to complete the ritual.
And then she waited.
Water in the stream trickled and bubbled. Crisp autumn air nipped at her exposed skin. Somewhere in the distance some birds chirped as a squirrel scurried up the bark of an oak. Her side throbbed, blood warm and sticky.
The water froze and the air went still and stagnant, the forest now silent.
Black smoke crept out from below the river stone, foul smelling as the wreath burned.
“Now, is this not a fascinating occurrence.”
Caroline said nothing as the voice rumbled from the earth, the sound seeming to echo all around her. More black tendrils spilled out, twining together in the air, growing darker and thicker until a cloud of smog enveloped her small form.
“Oh?” The voice taunted. “So quiet, little one. Was it bravado and not defiance I tasted?”
Blue eyes, still round in a youthful face, flashed with icy fire as knuckles bleached white in her lap. “I am young, not stupid. I am hardly going to scare you off before you give me what I want.”
There was silence for several rapid patters of her hummingbird heart, long enough that Caroline feared she had miscalculated. And then there was a bark of laughter, nearly human if not for the way it shook the world around her.
“Such fire, little one!” Amusement faded to something more derisive. “And such confidence to think I would make a bargain with the likes of you. I do not make Deals with your kind, girl.”
Had she been less prepared, such words may have shaken her nerve. Instead her lips only twitched as she attempted to smother a growing smirk.
“Oh, I know. A demon with honor? That’s funny!” She grew somber as she continued. “Yeah, I can respect that you don’t go after kids. It’s probably your lone good quality... one that the rest of your kind don’t share.” Subconsciously her hand shifted towards her side, where it hovered over the still throbbing wound. And again she was left waiting, hating that she was at this demon’s mercy. Knowing it had none.
The darkness had grown thick as she spoke, blocking nearly all the midday sun. And she hoped it was a good sign when it suddenly started moving. Shifting and writhing and converging before her.
A man (rather what appeared as a man, she reminded herself) crouched before her. His looks were unfairly pretty, all blonde and blue eyed. So, she was almost thankful when inhuman gold bled into his eyes, his pupil an unnatural black, the lines and edges of his face suddenly looking a bit wrong. Too severe, too predatory.
“Andrealphus,” his voice rumbled and hissed, its power still sending trembles through her. “A pathetic little cretin.”
Caroline couldn’t quite hide her shiver, despite the fact his ire wasn’t directed at her. And he must have sensed the spike in fear, his predatory attention now fully fixated on her. She watched the abyss of his pupil dilate and felt a dry swallow catch in her throat.
“Caroline Forbes,” he intoned slowly, rolling the syllables across his tongue. His pupil was still wide and black and consuming as he stared at her. His power prickled just shy of pain against her skin. “Do you accept the price I will demand? It will be my pleasure to hunt such vermin, but I do not offer my aid for free.”
It was almost easy now to meet the demon’s gaze, his threat not really a threat at all considering. And she said as much. “I could refuse and be forced to flee, already branded like some kind of animal, and wait for nonexistent mercy from the demon that specifically devours children. Or I could accept and deny such a creature the satisfaction. Perhaps, even gain a stay of execution from the only one of its kind to never take a child’s soul.”
She did not waver as she spoke, her voice and eyes steady as she looked at the being across from her. When there was a flicker in his expression, she noticed. Though, its meaning escaped her as it faded too quickly. His face settling into something completely impassive.
“Then, we have a bargain, Caroline Forbes. I shall remove the threats you now face, the demon, Andrealphus, and their Summoner, William Forbes. Then, upon the eve of your eighteenth year, when you are a child no longer, I shall exact my price.”
He extended his hand to her, a completely ordinary looking hand. And after a split second of hesitation, she took it.
Her screams were swallowed by the darkness. Expectation did not dull the agony that shot up her hand and arm from where they touched. Black, inky shadow crawled up her skin, burrowed into her flesh, marked the evidence of their contract.
When it was over the demon and his darkness were gone. The world once more awash with the noise of the stream and animals. Her side no longer ached and when she tugged up the hem of her shirt she found the skin clean and healed. Not even the hint of a scar could be found. But before she could celebrate the lack of a brand, the back of her neck pulsed. She scrambled to tug her hair out of the way, awkwardly craning her head to look at her reflection in the water.
Impossibly black lines traced an intricate sigil on the nape of her neck. It pulsed once under her touch before going dormant. Appearing as nothing more than a strange tattoo, out of place only in that it was on a child. She scowled, letting her hair fall and cover it, but refused to pay it any more attention as she planned her next steps.
The demon would keep their word after all, but Mystic Falls would never be home again.
--
Present
Crossing her arms was reflexive and she hated the instantly defensive maneuver. So what she said next was admittedly not very smart.
“You’re early,” she spat. And she hated the indulgent amusement on his face even more.
How he was still smirking as he spoke. “Don’t fret, love. You still have the handful of hours before I collect my dues.”
Her fingers twitched. “Then, why are you here?”
--
If he was honest, which he always was when he wanted to be his most cruel and most tempting, then he would say that he didn’t know. It was a whim to appear early, albeit by a mere 24 hours or so. 43.5 if he was feeling generous, 17.5 if he wasn’t. What a delight time zones were.
But no matter. He came because he was a bit curious what had become of the defiant little girl with her sharp tongue and blazing eyes. He wouldn’t say he was disappointed by what he found either.
A bargain with him should have strained her soul, let alone one made nearly a decade ago. And yet she was still full of light when others would have dimmed. More than her eyes blazed, and he couldn’t resist provoking her, wanting to witness the flare of her soul.
“I told you, sweetheart, I do not care to see what belongs to me damaged.” He smothered a grin as he watched her aura spark and snap like lightning. “And I despise those who try to rob me, especially in the final hour.”
She stilled, but didn’t quail. If anything she drew herself up as she regarded him.
“I certainly didn’t grow less intelligent as I aged. The cost of attempting the impossible would not be worth it.” Her eyes narrowed. “So don’t threaten me. I won’t run.”
--
He moved before she could process even a blur, his fingers tangled in her hair, his palm hot and solid just above where his mark sat. Foreign sensation set her nerves twitching with pleasure-pain, her brain unable to make sense of what had been dormant for 10 years. His lips were at her ear as he whispered.
“Oh, Caroline. That wasn’t a threat, that was a statement of a fact. You will know if I threaten you.”
His hand loosened from her curls, trailing the faintest of touches across his mark where it still burned, as he released her. An expression of dark satisfaction crossed his face when she couldn’t prevent a reactionary shiver.
“I’ll see you tomorrow, love. Have a good night.”
And then he was gone before she could regain her composure or snap any of the retorts brewing in her mind. There was adrenaline still singing in her veins and a hint of arousal to her ire and dismay. Though she wasn’t going to waste her time feeling ashamed. It wasn’t her fault his form was absurdly and unfairly attractive.
--
Morning came quicker than Caroline would have liked, her sleep less restful too. So, to say she was irked when a knock sounded on her door at - her eyes squinted at the hotel alarm clock - 8:00 AM, was a bit of an understatement. She grumbled, nestling deeper into her sheets as she tugged a pillow over her head.
A familiar laugh reached her ears. “I know you are awake, Caroline.”
Perhaps she should have thought about her actions rather than just reacting, but she didn’t. She was furious and that energy had her flinging her covers off and storming toward the door.
“Why are you here?” She asked, her anger turned cold and quiet in the moment between gripping the knob and jerking the door open.
He eyed her, a taunting mien fading into something more contemplative.
“To celebrate, Caroline. Happy Birthday.”
She shook her head. “No. No, I refuse. You’ll have my soul tonight. Hell, you can take it right now if you so choose, but you will not make a mockery of my last hours.”
Again his expression shifted, though she still couldn’t read it nor did she try to.
“A mockery?” He echoed. “Do you really think that low of me?”
--
Her soul was near overwhelmingly bright, and she hissed out a sharp “yes” with no hesitation. And he watched the maelstrom of her being churn around her and wondered at his own reaction.
From anyone else such disrespect would be met with his fury. He would have capitalized on her words and ripped her soul from right where she stood. And yet he had no desire to do so. In fact, he was impressed rather than angered by her continued defiance.
--
She waited, her fingers tight on the now warm metal of the knob, expecting to feel unfathomable pain as he took her soul. Instead he cocked his head, his tone frighteningly calm and nearly conversational in its levity.
“Supposing I am so inclined, how would you, a mere human, hope to stop me?”
Her smile was equal parts bitter and resolved. “I would leave you no life to mock, only a soul to catch. An ability surely not beyond one such as you.”
--
It was then he decided he would not harm this brave, foolish human. This young woman who would so recklessly imperil her soul all for a modicum of control. Once he had been the Light-Bringer, and he may no longer call himself such anymore, but it would not be him to snuff out her light.
--
It seemed idiotic to think, but Caroline thought she saw something in the demon’s face soften. Her mistake. A split second later his hand was on her neck.
She stiffened as she felt his power flex under her skin, bracing for something that never came. It was a warning, she realized, as she stared at the demon regarding her with an odd solemnity.
“I do not allow humans control in my Bargains, Caroline. Nor would any self-respecting demon. And had I accepted what your spite so damningly offered to me, your soul would have been the least of your concerns.” To her surprise, his hand moved away again, and he even took a step back to allow her some breathing room. “You are very fortunate I have no interest in playing such games with you.”
Caroline’s lips pursed. “You’re not going to leave me alone today, are you?” She finally asked.
“In an hour, I will return to escort you to breakfast. Should there come a point today that you honestly feel I am tormenting you or making your day worse I shall leave. And I shall not return for a year to the day. Deal?”
She couldn’t prevent the way her eyes noticeably widened, all but bulging out of their sockets in her shock. Because what? He was going to give her more time on her say-so?! What happened to ‘I do not allow humans control in my Bargains, Caroline’?
His chuckle disrupted her careening thoughts. “Do you accept, Caroline Forbes?” There was his stupid, ordinary looking, utterly damning hand extended before her for the second time in her life.
It troubled her that she couldn’t see a downside to his deal, surely that meant there was a trick. But if he was going to show up anyway, then she wanted the out. Reluctantly, she took his hand, his power thankfully only a warm wave up her arm rather than anything painful.
He smiled, twisted their grasped hands around so he could kiss her knuckles. “I’ll see you in an hour, love.”

Author’s Note: I had intended to write more, but my muse sputtered out. Perhaps, after AU week? Maybe? I do find it hilarious that I wrote this without using Klaus’ name once. It would have come up later...

Day 5 of 24th Birthday drabbles
This one is an established relationship Drarry that was inspired by a whole musical - Six. Basically, what happens when Draco understands a reference to muggle history. You can also enjoy it on AO3 or FFN.
Six

Gen, 1286w, for Gammarad @ Press Start exchange. Mostly based off the first ending, the second video (the one about hierarchies of ideas), the audio logs and what the game means to me, which is a lot. Stealth (not really stealth) Cyan Worlds cameos past the first unnamed visitor.
.
She had no name when she came to the island: this happened before names, before the world was split and cut and catalogued. The waves carried her body across the dark sea, and she dreamt long and poignant dreams under the water; when she woke up again, she was lying on the fresh sands of the island, in a bay that contained the possibility of a village but still lay bare, content with growing grass and jagged dark rocks (this happened before villages, as well).
Small stones smoothed by the sea tickled her legs; the waves that pushed them to and fro seemed tame and friendly, almost curious to touch the newcomer, to bid her welcome. A far cry from the storm that still roared in her ears when she closed her eyes.
She set her back to the sea and walked, and walked, and walked. In her travels across the pristine expanses of the island, she saw the brilliance of the rising sun touching the side of the mountain, which was one and the same as the sparkling trail of ice of the frozen river that seemed to spring from it. She saw hidden paths forming on the water's edge as the sea met the land. She saw the sky flow through the gaps in the tree tops as if it were a river, which was only fair as she had seen a river become sunlight.
All that she saw in this land, she traced with her hand stretched out in front of her, fingers reaching out to the sky and the sea. As she traced these paths, she defined them, she made them real, with the same unwavering conviction which, before the island, had led her to dip her hands in the mud and trace her figures on the walls of a cave.  I am here  , she had said with those paintings  . I see this. This too she commits to a greater memory than her own, which is not the wall of a cave but a certain quality of the air of this place, which seems to hold her thoughts and resonate with them, and shine with new possibilities. So she traces her paths like magic and through them she says: the world is a whole.
It will take time before others will see these truths again: they will have words for rivers big and small and for the sky, and they will look at the air and find nitrogen and oxygen and carbon dioxide, objectively distinct, like particles of a material grammar, and they will break them down even further.
But condensed vapour fills the rivers and after a spell it rises up again from the water's surface, back to the air whence it came. They will come to see that the flickering of a candle is, at its heart, a jiggling of atoms, the same force that, many light years and several degrees of complexity further down, explodes in the heart of stars. In due time. For the time being, in this time before any names at all, her paths were traced and there they shone, fixed like constellations, waiting for discerning eyes which would recognise them.
Her bones rest within the island, deep underground, touching, from a certain perspective, a vein of white limestone that stretches like a ribcage holding the island.
So
When Caroline and Cecil came to the island, and sat on the grass in a field dotted with apple trees, and wondered how much labor it would take to be able to call it an orchard, and how much this intervention would push these plants away from their natural branches among a tree of infinite possibilities, and both of them were intimately talking about people rather than trees, about people scattered like trees
And when Anna came to the island, following its dunes with her eyes attuned to the desert, a dream of home, until those dunes ended and she found herself very small and very alone at the base of a cliff of blinding white marble, and so losing herself within it she found a thought which had already sublimated in that place, that is, that carving is working by subtraction, and so she lent herself to the stone and found the figures hidden within the marble, but even after she freed them they could not shake the suffering of their solitude, each of them forever separate, and she thought she may have lent too much of herself to the stone
When a man who hid his name from the surface came to the island, he was fascinated by the ruins of the sun temple which by then had been long built and abandoned, but as he considered that place he kept looking at the sea; he was fascinated by the few houses which had gathered forming a small village, but as he considered that place he kept looking at the sea. In the end he built a boat to follow his restless instinct to reach beyond the borders of the island and find the lands, the people, the knowledge that lay beyond the horizon. The man was a scholar and a polymath but a sailor he was not, and so his boat broke in half by the shore, leaving him stranded, comforted by the lapping waves, as the alien stars above him called to him (he named a few of them and they were not so alien anymore)
When Catherine came to the island, she knew that she had followed an ancient route there through a dream within a dream, so far away from her self that she had reached the waters of a deep collective sea, and filled with that knowledge she sat upon a cliff, observing the rocks that rose above the waters and their reflections on the surface, immaterial image mirroring the material objects. She looked at her own standing immaterial dream as the mirror of an unknown material reality, attempting to trace its contours, but found them vast and measureless, and lost herself in sweet unknowability
When her distant daughter came to the island, she followed her same path there, but her journey was arduous and meandering, coasting roaring otherworldly abysses. In the end, she sat near to where her mother had stood, on an sunny red bay rich in loam. For her symmetries, she dug her hands deep in the clay, searching for herself within crude matter. Could one's offspring be an item, a vase, a place instead of a child, what would reflect her after all was said and done?
When Richard came to the island, he was long accustomed to humility and darkness, and to history dragging him further and further downwards toward a bottomless pit. He found a place of shadows there, where he could feel at home, and saw that it was a sacred place, dominated by an ancient tree, whose many branches also looked sacred enough to his eyes. The shadows cast by its growing branches entwined with the walls and breaches in those ancient ruins drew ordered paths on the ground in the present, elegant paths, beautiful, and he dared to hope
And when Arthur and Albert and Werner and Nicholas and Augustine and Hans and Yung-chia and Hugh and David and Ryonen and William and Douglas and Rabindranath and Gangaji and Rupert and Muhammad and Zhuangzhi and Lao-tzu and Sahib and Russell and Paul and James and many, many others came to the island,
they all left their footsteps, all led, all followed, their efforts interconnected and forming so many echoing paths, all leading to and from that first spark of recognition, standing on the shoulders of that first witness, resting on her bones.
