Stellantis wants to make scabbing woke
Tumblr media
I'm coming to Minneapolis! Oct 15: Presenting The Internet Con at Moon Palace Books. Oct 16: Keynoting the 26th ACM Conference On Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing.
Tumblr media
I know, I know, it's weird when the worst people you know are right, even when they're right for the wrong reasons: like, the "Intelligence Community" is genuinely terrible, pharma companies are murderous crooks, and Big Tech really does have a dangerous grip on public debate. The swivel-eyed loons have a point, is what I'm saying:
https://locusmag.com/2023/05/commentary-cory-doctorow-the-swivel-eyed-loons-have-a-point/
When conspiratorialists and reactionaries holler about how the FBI are dirty-tricking creeps who are framing Trump, it's tempting to say, "well, if Trumpists hate the FBI, then I will love the FBI. Who cares about COINTELPRO and what they did to Martin Luther King?"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FBI%E2%80%93King_suicide_letter
It's a process called "schizmogenesis": forming new group identity beliefs based on saying the opposite of what your enemies say, and as tempting as that is, it's extraordinarily foolish and dangerous:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/12/18/schizmogenesis/
It means that canny reactionaries like Steve Bannon can trick you into taking any position merely by taking the opposite one. Bannon's followers are even more easily led, so it's easy for him to convince them that we have always been at war with Oceania. The right has created an entire mirror world of "I know you are but what am I?" politics.
Anti-vax co-opts "bodily autonomy." Climate denial becomes environmentalism ("wind turbines kill birds"). Transphobia becomes feminism ("keep women-only spaces for real women"). Support for strongmen becomes anti-imperialism ("don't feed the war machine in Ukraine"). These are the doppelgangers Naomi Klein warns us against:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/05/not-that-naomi/#if-the-naomi-be-klein-youre-doing-just-fine
The far right has even managed to co-opt anti-corporate rhetoric. Culture warriors rail against "woke capitalism," insisting that when big businesses take socially progressive positions, it's just empty "virtue signalling." And you know what? They've got a point. Partially.
As with all mirror-world politics, the anti-woke-capitalism shuck is designed to convince low-information right-wing pismires into buying "anti-woke pillows" and demanding the right to pay junk fees to "own the libs":
https://pluralistic.net/2023/08/04/owning-the-libs/#swiper-no-swiping
But woke capitalism is bullshit. Corporations – profit-maximizing immortal transhuman colony organisms that view workers and customers as inconvenient gut-flora – do not care about social justice. They don't care about anything, except for minimizing compensation for workers while maximizing the risk those workers bear; and locking in and gouging customers for products that are as low-quality as can be profitably sold.
Take DEI, a favored target of the right. It's undoubtably true that diversity, inclusion and equity initiatives have made some inroads on correcting bias in hiring decisions, with the result that companies get better employees who would have been excluded without this explicit corrective.
However, corporations don't value DEI because they abhor their history of hiring bias. Instead, DEI is how corporate management demonstrates to workers that their grievances are best addressed by trusting corporate leadership to correct their error of their ways – and not by forming a union.
Before the passage of the National Labor Relations Act in 1935, corporations would create fake "Company Unions" whose leadership were beholden to the company executives. These were decoy unions: they looked and sounded like unions, but when they negotiated with management, they were actually working for the bosses, not the workers.
This is more mirror-world tactics. They're the labor equivalent of the "crisis pregnancy centers" that masquerade as abortion clinics in order to fool pregnant people and trap them with endless delays until it's too late to terminate their pregnancies. Company unions get workers to trust in negotiators who are secretly working for the bosses, who emerge from the bargaining table with one-sided, abusive contracts and insist that this is the best deal workers can hope for.
Company unions were outlawed 90 years ago, and for decades, labor had a seat at the table, with wages tracking productivity gains and workers getting protection for discrimination, unsafe labor conditions, and wage-theft. Then came the neoliberal turn, and 40 years of wage stagnation, increased inequality, and corporate rule.
Anything that can't go on forever will eventually stop. Finally, finally, we have reached a turning point in labor, with public approval for unions at levels not seen since the Carter administration and thousands of strikes and protests breaking out across the country:
https://striketracker.ilr.cornell.edu/
It's not just the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA, either. For the first time in history, the UAW is striking against all the major automakers, and they are winning:
https://arstechnica.com/cars/2023/10/striking-uaw-workers-win-key-battery-plant-concession-from-general-motors/
The automakers are getting desperate. Stellantis – Chrysler's latest alias, reflecting the company's absorbtion into corporate-human-centipede of global carmakers – has mobilized its DEI programs, trying to get marginalized people to believe that scabbing is a liberatory activity:
https://theintercept.com/2023/10/10/uaw-auto-strike-stellantis/
Stellantis calls each of its DEI silos a "Business Resource Group" (BRG): there's a "Working Parents Network," an "African Ancestry Network," "Asians Connected Together," a "DiverseAbilities Network," a "Gay & Lesbian Alliance" and more:
https://blog.stellantisnorthamerica.com/2021/07/20/business-resource-groups-drive-inclusion-and-diversity/
The corporate managers who lead these BRGs have established a scab rotation for each subgroup, calling on members to cross a UAW picket-line at a Michigan Parts Distribution Center run by Stellantis subsidiary Mopar:
Each BRG will pick a specific day of the week/weekend to volunteer as a team. Help continue to be the RESOURCE the BUSINESS can count on! Stellantis needs your help in running the Parts Distribution Centers (PDC) to ensure a steady supply of parts to our customers while negotiations continue. Working Parents Network has identified Friday, October 13 as WPN’s BRG Day at the PDCs!"
Now, these BRGs weren't invented by marginalized workers facing discrimination in the workplace. They come from literal union-busting playbooks produced by giant "union avoidance" firms that charge bosses millions for advice on skirting – or breaking – the law to keep workplace democracy at bay. All the biggest anti-union consultancies love BRGs, from Littler Mendelson to Jackson Lewis. IRI Strategies touts BRGs as a way to "union-proof" a business by absorbing workers' grievances in a decoy committee that will let them feel listened to.
BRGs, in other words, are the Crisis Pregnancy Centers of workplace discrimination. They're a Big Store Con, a company union dressed up as corporate social responsibility.
Now, let's not pretend that unions have a sterling record on race and gender issues. Giant labor organizations like the AFL had to be dragged into racial integration, and trade unions have sometimes been on the wrong side of anti-immigration panics:
https://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/1997/summer/american-labor-movement.html
But unions have also been the most reliable way for people of color and women to win better workplace treatment. The struggle for racial and gender justice was fought through labor organizing. Remember that MLK's "I've Been To the Mountaintop" speech was given in support of striking sanitation workers in Memphis:
https://www.afscme.org/about/history/mlk/mountaintop
Black organizers have always been militant labor organizers. Labor Day commemorates the victory of the long, hard-fought Pullman strike, where Black workers brought one of the most powerful companies in America to its knees:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pullman_Strike
And women have always fought for gender justice through the labor movement: the New York shirtwaist strike is the Ur-example, when women-led unions fought thugs and scabs on icy New York streets:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_shirtwaist_strike_of_1909
It's no surprise that labor activism, anti-racism and feminism go together. Since the earliest days, the labor justice struggle was also a social justice struggle. To learn more check out Kim Kelly's Fight Like Hell: The Untold History of American Labor:
https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Fight-Like-Hell/Kim-Kelly/9781982171063
The most exploited, underpaid, and abused workers in America are also the most marginalized (duh).

To fast-food workers:
https://www.ufcw.org/about/
The vanguard of today's labor surge is Black, brown, female and queer. Without a union, workers who face discrimination are on their own, hoping that their bosses will voluntarily do something about it. Black workers in Tesla's rabidly anti-union shops face vicious racism, from slurs to threats to violence. Without a union, they have to rely on the shifting whims of an Apartheid emerald mine space-Karen for relief, or hope for help from the NLRB or a class-action lawyer:
https://apnews.com/article/tesla-racism-black-lawsuit-class-action-21c88bddf60eca702560be58429495de
The far right isn't wrong when they holler that woke capitalism is bullshit. As with so many of their mirror-world causes, they've got a point, but only a limited one. The problem with woke capitalism is that it's no substitute for a union. The problem with relying on Business Resource Groups to fight racism, sexism, homophobia and transphobia is that these struggles are all class struggles, and a BRG is never going to fight against the company that created it.
To understand how bankrupt woke capitalism is, conside this: Stellantis is calling on its "Working Parents Network" to scab this Friday. Stellantis is also being sanctioned by the Department Of Labor for discriminating against nursing mothers – the same "working parents" that the BRG is meant to protect:
https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/local/2023/02/08/investigation-finds-stellantis-violated-rights-of-nursing-mothers-at-sterling-heights-plant/
Woke capitalism is just another kind of "predatory inclusion," like Intuit's campaign defending its "Free File" tax-prep scam, where they're claiming that ending this ripoff is racist because it denies Black families the right to be tricked into paying for something they are entitled to get for free:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/09/27/predatory-inclusion/#equal-opportunity-scammers
When I learned about Intuit's wokewashing, I thought I'd found woke capitalism's rock bottom, but I was wrong. Stellantis's call for woke scabbing is a new low.

Town of Puddle: Vampires
Last updated 08/14/2023
In the world of Puddle, vampire is a catch-all term for any humanoid creature that needs to consume something from a human to survive - usually human flesh or blood, but some subsist on other things such as emotions, dreams, etc. The most common vampire is the classic undead vampire. Vampires are usually immortal or very long-lived.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While vampires are thought to have any number of origins, there is in fact one singular origin from which they descend. The first vampires were nephilim, the children of the demon Asherah and the angel Rapha. Asherah was the queen of a kingdom named Hell. Tales of this kingdom and her rule would pass through the ages and become distorted into mythology. Rapha was an angel of blood with a terrible hunger his children would inherit. Both are long dead and gone, but their influence on their descendants lingers. Common vampiric powers, such as glamours and shapeshifting, come from these ancient ancestors.
Asherah and Rapha’s children were destined to rule, for a time anyway, over all corners of the earth. Some were more suited to the forests or mountains or cities, others to the sea or even the skies. These first vampires would eventually give rise to all the different types of vampires we see today.
The kingdoms of vampires were matriarchal, modeled after Asherah’s own kingdom. Matriarchs are a special type of vampire suited to rule, and childbirth. Mundane vampires have difficulty bearing children, most being completely infertile. Natural-born vampires are thus rare but not unheard of. Most vampires nowadays are turned, from human to vampire as other creatures are immune or will simply die to vampirism.
A childe (plural, childer) is a vampire that has been turned by another, who is their sire. One of the few remaining widespread cultural norms for vampires, is that a sire has some degree of responsibility for their childer shortly after they are turned, and it is good practice to teach them local vampire rules, history, and etiquette.
While most vampires prefer solitary existences, many vampires form groups for mutual support. These groups often vie for power in shadowy undergrounds that exist away from human eyes. A vampire group might be called a gang, a pack, or a coven.
Below are my named vampires so far. If you’re curious about even more, @wyrmzier also has their own Puddle vampire characters you can ask about.
Vivian Moon used to be human, but she was turned into a vampire. She is like a siphonophore, a colony inhabiting a human form. Because she is a colony of organisms she can survive grave injuries or even dismemberment, for short periods of time. When her limbs are separated from her body they have their own intelligence, like an octopus’s. Vivian works as a forensic consultant for a special precinct dedicated to investigating monster-related crimes.
Ethel Stone is Vivian’s friend in City Hall, who keeps her informed of political goings-on and secretly helps out her fellow vampires. Ethel is a lamprey vampire.
Teutho Melua is a vampiric pirate captain with a love of theatrics and parties. He is Vivian and Mordecai’s sire. Teutho is initially very narcissistic and bloodthirsty, but after some character development he becomes slightly less narcissistic. He is still bloodthirsty.
Mordecai Esadze is Teutho’s first mate. He is dark, serious, and grumpy, to balance Teutho’s more flashy personality. Mordecai is responsible and secretly more of a softie than he lets on.
Adelaide is Mordecai’s childe, his only one. As a human she sought the change, vampires call these sorts of humans “bite-chasers.” Now she manages a modest network of underground clubs and casinos, and in her spare time enjoys breeding snakes.
Lilian Heather is the adopted daughter of Samuel, and an up-and-coming actress.
Melanthios is an ancient vampire, thousands of years old and now more monstrous than humanoid. He is Menodora’s mate.
Malakos was the youngest of Menodora’s children, a cruel and egotistical vampire who controlled a small criminal empire on the Black Sea. He was Teutho’s sire, and was killed by Teutho and Mordecai.
Hyacinth is another of Malakos's childer, who pursues Teutho for a time.
Chise is Vivian’s mother, a bakeneko vampire. She abandoned Vivian at a young age, leaving her with no knowledge of her heritage.
Lycan was an ancient vampire, a child of Rapha and Asherah. His pursuit of a cure for vampirism led to the creation of werewolves.
Felisity is an ancient cat vampire, and a Matriarch. She was a queen of a small kingdom and was worshipped as an aspect of the goddess Bastet for many years, but eventually was dethroned and went into hiding.

one of the most tragic things is that i cant find my notes from my worldbuilding class which was like the second best class ive ever taken in my life. but i can remember a lot.
one thing i think is especially relevant right now is the "haha jonathan is an idiot because he doesn't listen to the peasants" is a very modern reaction and reading. him ignoring the peasants was done very deliberately by bram stoker because, odds are, the people reading it at the time wouldn't have believed the peasants either. they're playing up the belief a lot of englishmen have that they are better than the dumb little locals, and that's something stoker assumed the reader would believe as well. the suspense that something terrible was coming, but it was obfuscated by the fact that the "dumb" locals could just be being "superstitious" (read: having a different religion).
there's a perpetual "west" against the "east" that stoker is utilizing that organizes dracula -- the West symbolizes enlightenment, science, reason, trains, nobility, whiteness, modernity, democracy, virgin marriages and the East is magic, superstition, cruelty, slavery, regression, sexual perversion, madness, despotism, harems and suffocating unchanging tradition.
dracula was written in a period of decline for the british empire -- a lot of people were feeling self reflection and guilt. a very popular genre in britain at the time was "invasion literature," or "reverse colonization," where the people who were conquered take back over or spread back to the "home" country. dracula is a reverse colonization, where he would invade the "civilized" western world and -- gasp, shock, horror -- change them into people like him, destroying the Racial Purity of the west. that is a large part of why dracula was scary to people at the time.
(there is an alternative reading, that dracula is meant to represent the british themselves, and it is just written as if its a reverse colonialization; dracula steals babies, murders women (imperial genocide), and has a lust for blood (conquering, war), he talks about how wonderful his race is, he's the "ultimate" race bc he's stronger, faster, more charismatic, immortal... dracula is scary bc it forces the british to see themselves as the villain. i find this less compelling because a lot of the words used to describe dracula are antisemetic stereotypes and he is specifically made to be from the east and "taking on" the british ideals to "trick them")
there are aspects of the novel that support both of these readings, like any reading of anything can be supported. i think, when reading dracula, keeping in mind all of the very dangerous stereotypes is really important, especially with how they are used to indicate things are "scary."

Phylum #4: Cnidaria!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An extremely varied phylum, recognizable by radial symmetry and stinging cells, Cnidaria encompasses jellyfish, corals, sea anemones and many more.
Cnidarians have a complicated life cycle, with either a medusa (jellyfish-like) form, a polyp (sea anemone-like) form, or often both! In jellyfish, the polyp will transform into a pancake stack of flat disks, each becoming a free-swimming medusa. "Immortal jellyfish" actually rejuvenate by going back to the polyp phase!
Both polyps and medusae show a variety of body plans. Sea anemones and small, self-regenerating hydras are both polyps, while corals are giant colonies of them. The medusa side isn't less diverse, with the immense siphonophores also being colonial organisms, reaching up to 50 meters in length!
Possibly the most unique cnidarians are myxozoans. These microscopic animals have simplified their body plan to the extreme, sometimes consisting of a single cell, living as parasites of fish and annelid worms. For a long time, they weren't believed to be animals at all, instead being classified as single-celled protozoans!

Custom kaijus??
since i started this new fan goji verse, which i hope into what it will grow, i already drawn Godzilla and Mothra. BUT!
I Decided to add some lore as well, as well as two custom kaijus.
Tumblr media
To start with, Mizuyama the water mountain. Its a giant construct made by water, which sustains form thanks to eyes within it. Eyes themselves are like a colony organism, making themselves shell from surrounding water by emitting irradiated substance. Cons, it cant endlessly compile water and its dependant on how many eyes there are. Inspired by Hedorah, Evil Ocean Water from OPM, Blob and slimes from various games. Essentially a giant slime of water that can shoot boiling water so sharp, one large ray of water can cut a building. But it cant stay too long out of water cources.
Second kaiju, King Xolotl. One of titans akin to Mothra, who wandered world in ancient times. Since then, many titans laid dormant, with Mothra being last to lay. Xolotl remained and hid within hidden archipelag that cannot be found due to anomalies, akin to Skull Island. Its called Monster Island due to monsters that evolved there due to Xolotl's presence. (Reference to showa monster island). During one of hidden expedition's, a sample of Xolotl's dna was found and it was discovered that Xolotl can regenerate like no being on Earth can, so humans decided to experiment on those. Hubris of humans to become akin to gods by making themselves immortal. But experiment goes wrong and sample mutates, growing in size and escaping, becoming monster of terror and destruction. That monster will known as Godzilla.
So anyway. Hoping to do known monsters next to include into this verse, including Anguirus, Rodan and Kong. Stay tuned.

In the far past, Kryptonians were a race that was enslaved and genetically modified by the more technologically advanced interplanetary invaders, the Coluans.
The Kryptonians fought and won their freedom and planet back. The tech left behind by the Coluans was used and improved on by the Kryptonians.
In one portion of their rich history, the Kryptonians themselves would go on to be planetary conquerors and settlers akin to Earth’s Roman empire.
In order to have a firm hold of their planet, Kryptonians introduced a mutagen into their DNA that would allow a member of their species to be able to reproduce with an alien sapient species.
The method by which to activate it would be for the Kryptonian to have had enough intercourse with a being that induces feelings akin to love (lust, respect, protectiveness, etc.).
Thus such people’s as the Daxamites came into being.
Later on, the Krypton’s leading government would become replaced by the Science guild. Eventually Krypton’s colonies would become independent civilizations.
Krypton eventually would become more and more closed off.
The mutagen, however, would continue to exist among the Kryptonian populace and at times be activated if only among the lower classes where traditional reproduction still continues as opposed to the Birthing Matrix among the upper echelons.
Lara Lor-Van, whose natural birth caused a scandal within the traditional House of Van, knew of the ancient mutagen that is dormant among Kryptonians.
Not wanting her son to be forever alone on a strange planet, she made sure to activate the gene so that Kal El would be able to father children with the Earthling he chooses.
More than a Earth decade later, a young Clark Kent had left Smallville to travel the world. In part, trying to find purpose again after losing his lover and best friend, Lex, to amnesia caused by an experiment on Krypton tech gone wrong. In another, fleeing from Lex’s father Lionel who was powerful enough to blackmail and threaten Clark to stay away from Lex.
In addition to his heart pain, he was losing his powers and was becoming weaker every day.
He had to rely more and more on Krypto, a dog who was mutated by the green meteorite of Smallville, & Lori Lemaris, a friend he made at the college he used to secretly visit Lex at.
It was only after he was examined by another friend (Immortal Man) he made on his travels that he found out what was happening.
Apparently, pregnant male Kryptonians would lose muscle mass and become more aggressive if they felt threatened. Instead of their stomach distending, their organs would rearrange for the growing baby. This was so that male Kryptonians would be unencumbered if they needed to flee from danger that their mate/family/allies would deal with. It would also discourage the pregnant male from engaging in stressful activities and focus on his well-being.
After an intense labor that eventually lead to Clark just cutting himself open, Conner Julian Kent was born. (Julian was from Lionel’s estranged brother Jules, a lawyer living in Smallville whom both boys loved and respected).
From then on, Clark swore to keep his child safe and to be a strong person Conner could look to as an example.
For that reason, Clark didn’t dare go back home until after Lionel died. In the meantime, he’d learn everything he could: about the world, humanity, & his and Conner’s heritage.
When he could finally return home, Clark decided to take the job offer he got from an editor at the Daily Planet. Because to do the most good, Metropolis, Delaware was the best place. Plus it was the city closest to Smallville aka “little Kansas”.
From there, he would be confronted by the so called philanthropist and man of tomorrow, Lex Luthor.
Having already grieved, Clark saw Luthor for what he really was: an immoral Machiavellian narcissist criminal who hated and looked down on humanity. Who would do anything and use anyone to get what he wanted: being the top of the food chain.
Clark was determined not only to stop him, but to never let him near Conner.
This began a war between a “meddling alien who is a threat to human progress” & “a man who could have done so much good if only he’d choose to do so”.

palisade 32
i have two main thoughts about this episode. one is the role of mortality across the divine cycle and in palisade specifically. the other is FLASH NAUTILUS
there’s been very little information established about the actual physical ecosystems and land relationships on palisade. flash nautilus opens up SO MUCH possibility. you’re telling me there are gigantic airborne plasma blasting cephalopods on this planet?? fantastic. 10/10.
probably it’s the round-shelled modern kind of nautilus, but i’d love to imagine it as an endocerid nautiloid, a cambrian clade that had long pointed shells. this would make them very aerodynamic!
don’t want to get too into the longstanding speculative biology argument of “how do they fly”, but in this case i do think the “chemical reaction producing lighter-than-air gases in an internal organ” proposal is probably sufficient. flash nautilus shells are structured membrane-bound gas chambers… plasma blasts generate gas and some thrust…
considering the probable scavenging behavior of flash nautiluses (due to their large size and inefficient movement strategy), the plasma blasts likely originated as—and still serve as—a defense mechanism. (comparable to earth cephalopod defense mechanisms like shooting ink.)
lastly, if giant flying plasma nautiluses are on the table, i think we should consider comparable cambrian fauna. giant flying plasma anomalocaris. herpetogaster colonies. land wiwaxia
this has been speculative biology corner! tbc whenever there is any more biology to think about.
anyway, on to the other topic i have in mind: mortality in palisade.
i don’t feel like i have an articulated position about this, as much as a handful of things to line up next to each other. but the divine cycle has historically been concerned with control over death—setting fronts of conflict on undeath as violation, the right to die, forced continuation, the right to change. and so pc death is always going to alter that thematic fabric in some way.
all the recent pc death/flirting with death was discussed a bit this episode—figure taking number of the beast, brnine’s new hook about borrowed time—and phrygian just died (/sacrificed themself, but either way, departed) to prevent further death—a lot of that going around.
i was thinking about this during the stellar combustor arc too, and one thought that came up there was that the blue channel might gain an edge through their acceptance of their own mortality, as opposed to the principality’s desire for immortality/fear of death.
dahlia didn’t expect to die. gucci didn’t think brnine would survive and helped them anyway. figure feels precarious in their third chance at life.
i’m still not sure how i want to frame this—the conclusion i don’t want to back myself into (and also don’t think is being implied) is that self-sacrifice is the necessary condition for victory.
but there’s the argument that death gives meaning to life, in the way that all worlds end… idk. thinking about it. will have more to say about this if/when figure bites it.
a couple other loose thoughts:
SO EXCITED for more cori/elle conflict. it’s the first time they’ve met since cori got her new mech!
standing alone on a rooftop in a hostile city, cracked and affected and tracked, is so extremely noir sleuth. all it’s missing is some dreary rain… except it’s dawn, and this is baseline-c, and noir happens in the cracks in the perfect skyline.
new perspective is also just sick as shit. fantastic move.
felt very silly and fun to have more and more wildly different enemies popping up in this fight—can’t wait to see how messy it gets with dust in the mix lmao. past and present and future collide!

Gender and Divinity
At one end of the gender spectrum lies the Feminine, associated with Black and darkness, the Earth and mundane matters, collectivity, interconnection, receptivity, cyclicality, synthesis, and heterogeneity. At the other end lies the Masculine, associated with White and illumination, the Heavens and spiritual matters, individuality, separation, exclusivity, linearity, analysis, and homogeneity. These two extremes, Yin and Yang, interact to create a multitude of permutations which lie somewhere in between the purely Feminine and the purely Masculine. Everything that exists as part of what we usually call "reality" is located somewhere in this intermediate space. The extremes themselves are conceptual, and do not exist in material reality, as they are characterized by a purity which cannot be found in Nature.
Sleeping, dreaming, and Death-as-a-state (in contrast with Death-as-a-process) fall within the domain of the Feminine, as do gravity and magnetism, Zero and the even numbers, the elements of Water and Earth, the Moon, and the Cosmic Void or World Egg. Femininity denotes a state of rest, stability, and equilibrium. It promotes slowness and longevity, regeneration and even immortality, characteristic of oceanic or cold environments and the organisms that live there, shielded from the mutagenic properties of solar radiation. The influence of the Feminine on human societies manifests through tribalism, collectivism, and egalitarianism, giving rise to social structures such as animist and polytheistic religions, cults, clans, matrilineal descent systems, polygamy and polyamory, democracy, communism, hedonism, mysticism, subcultures and countercultures. It is driven by the Dionysian impulse to shed the Ego, losing the Self within something larger, like a drop of rain falling into the ocean. The Moon is a mirror; it does not generate its own light.
Femininity is the original and final state of all things. It is prominent in small children and the elderly, more so in non-human animals (especially large and slow-moving animals, those animals which are more primordial or lower on the food chain, as well as small animals with collectivistic tendencies such as ants), even more so in plants, and still more so in rocks, soil, and water. In animals, it is highly oriented toward the senses of touch, taste, and smell. During the course of our evolution, we developed eyes, learned to hunt, learned to walk on land, learned to stand upright, became taller, acquired language and logic, mastered the use of tools and fire, and lost our fur; some of us also lost our melanin. The development of an embryo into an infant, into a child, into an adult, involves a loss of plasticity; bones harden and fuse, the percentage of water in the body decreases, and neural pathways become more rigid. All of these traits indicate a process of Masculinization.
The Masculine is the domain of awareness, alertness, problem-solving, and conflict. It governs changes, transitions, and boundaries. Masculinity is a property of electricity, odd numbers, prime numbers, the elements of Fire and Air, the Sun, and the Axis Mundi. It is dynamic and always in motion, striving to reach the Feminine rest-state, like an arrow flying towards a target, or a key inserted into a lock. The influence of the Masculine on human societies manifests through individualism and inequality, giving rise to colonialism, capitalism, competition, war, monotheism, monogamy, patriarchy, the nation-state, asceticism, and scientific thought. Driven by the Apollonian impulse towards separation and clarity, it prioritizes facts over feelings.
Unable to coexist and seeing plurality as a threat, Masculinity seeks to dominate the Other and propagate the Self, often through violent means; Western culture, Christianity, and Islam are examples of this. Monotheism and patriarchy have a mutual affinity, and in many cases, one promotes the other. The god of a monotheistic religion is usually male. The Sun is the central axis around which all bodies in the Solar System revolve. This tendency of the Masculine to see itself as superior lies behind the association of Light with Good, and Darkness with Evil. Humans, considered as a whole, lean towards Masculinity, and serve as a Masculine counterpart to the natural environment of Earth.
The supreme divinity is like a polygon with an infinite number of sides: simultaneously circular and linear. Fate arises from the interconnection of individual wills, a product of emergent complexity, many individual entities inadvertently working together in a larger system. "GOD" can be described as genderless, or a perfect balance of all possible genders. It has the Feminine quality of Being, and the Masculine quality of Unity. It is an all-pervasive energy field of pure universal consciousness, which can be channeled into various manifestations that possess genders and other specific attributes, like white light being split by a prism into its spectral components. These facets of divinity are conceptualized in every pantheon of deities, in the 12 signs of the Zodiac, in the 22 Major Arcana or 22 letters of the Hebrew Alphabet, in Kabbalah as the 10 Sefirot, in Christianity as the Holy Trinity, in the Tzolk'in as the 20 Naguales, and in Chinese cosmology as the Ba Gua (Eight Trigrams) and 64 Hexagrams of the I Ching.

There are models for the proposed terraforming of Mars which involve the use of lichens and similar organisms to transform the soil and atmosphere. There's something fascinating about entire strains of living things reproducing and dying for the sake of humanity's own propagation. This is the reduction of entire species of life to a sort of instrumentalism, and there is a horror to that.
There is a (primarily but not exclusively american) cultural cohort who I will call for the purposes of this list the astro-futurists. They are strong proponents of space colonization, frequently for the purposes of building humanity's resilience against supposed "x-risks", such as asteroid strikes or sapient computers that we are unable to control. Even if Earth dies, humanity will live on on martian soil and around the stars of Alpha Centauri!
There is a certain type of high school 'nihilist' who has no philosophical groundings for his works, but has a primitive understanding of Darwinism, and so concludes that the purpose of all life is to reproduce. In the most base sense, he is correct; all extant life is shaped by the need to pass on its genetic material. Most people would say this is reductive, however, and they are correct too.
The lichen would not be the first thing humanity has bent to specific purposes like that. Billions of chickens are kept in factory farms for the sake of meat and egg production, and so their lives are similarly reduced to a singular purpose in the service of humanity. In the reductive eyes of the high schooler, who views procreation as the highest virtue of life, humanity has done these chickens a great favour! While disease and predators might threaten populations of junglefowl in the wild, the structure of the farm protects the chickens from predators, and judicious cullings ensure that some part of the population will always be resilient against disease. Even as humanity kills the chickens for their meat, we ensure that there will always be another chicken.
The chicken is, therefore, the immortal junglefowl. Bar a vast reorganization of human civilization, the domestic chicken will last as long as humanity does. The genes which distinguish them from their wild relatives will propagate forever, just as the lichens humanity plants in the martian soil will have a monopoly on that soil, free of the rival strains of lichen which populate the earth. No one, however, looks at a factory farm and says "How charitable of humanity to make these birds immortal!" Why is this?
The most existentially concerned of the astro-futurists might consider the cultural and social development of space travel, like their more idealistic peers, but ultimately their prerogative is the survival of humanity against any threat which might render Earth uninhabitable. Some have criticized these efforts as a new form of colonialism to further enrich the global north, and note that the countries most capable of creating space colonies are those mostly strongly integrated into the capitalist system. The first flag on Mars will in all likelihood be that of the United States, or that of whichever ascendant capitalist power who succeeds them.
There are two problems with the existential programme of the astro-futurists, beyond the ways in which it unduly advantages the global north. The first is that Mars, and indeed much of space, is a terrible home for humans. Those who live there will suffer from radiation, and poisonous dust, and will likely reside in cramped underground dwellings. The lower gravity will cause their bones and flesh to atrophy, and should they have children on Mars, there is a good chance their young will never return to the home of their parents, lest Earth's gravity crush their feeble lungs and hearts. These lives will be bold and novel, entirely distinct from those of all humans before them, but they may not be enviable.
The second problem is that, even assuming that Mars somehow becomes wholly self-sufficient of Earth, in the event that Earth is destroyed, Mars will not save humanity. A narrow slice of the cultures of the global north will be salvaged by the Martians, perhaps. English will still be spoken, but the hundreds of languages of Africa will likely perish. Recorded music will survive, but the little regional songs no one thought to record will not. This is the survival of humans, not of humanity.
The notion of 'memes' is sometimes attributed to Richard Dawkins, a man with a complicated legacy not worth discussing. I have heard rumour that the idea originates from somewhere else, however. If one takes the traditional formation of memes to be true, then astro-futurism can be considered a sort of meme or collection there, as can its more existentially-concerned strains. If we settle Mars to survive the loss of Earth, then perhaps humanity will die and this meme will continue to propagate. What remains will become another example of the instrumentalization of life, with a vast complexity of experiences reduced, ultimately, to the ability to serve the propagation of others.

About Shadow, constantly switching from cool to awful.
Tumblr media
I wonder if Shadow is controversial for his being (in some incarnations) a gray (if not dark gray) character of for his being (in some incarnations) a poor character. He suffers for the same inconsistencies of other Sonic characters, for obvious reason (many heads work around Sonic, so this thing is completely normal). Surely, is many incarnations can get crazier than Sonic's. He's not always this sullen calico hedgehog, in some incarnation he may be even cheerful. The only consistent thing is his grim look.
Adventure/Heroes/'06 Shadow
Tumblr media
This Shadow is the first and original one. He remembers me a lot Midna from legend of Zelda, a character with a sinister and evil outlook that turned out to be a nice person. The original Shadow indeed is nicer than he might seem at first glance and has a lot of nuances. He's not grumpy and he rarely gets angry, he is overall cool.
He doesn't start as a good guy. He debuts as vengeful, lunatic (he talks like a mad scientist and is melodramatic) and makes a fool of Eggman (Eggman doesn't realize, is funny). All of this was due to his intense unhappiness and his horrible past. He was created on the space colony ARK by Eggman's grandfather, Gerard Robotnik as a living weapon for G.U.N. and as medicine to cure his niece, Maria who had AIDS. Shadow befriended Maria and was a sort of a younger brother to her. Unfortunately, ARK was raided by G.U.N. who feared Shadow, the very weapon they commissioned, and everybody were killed, including Maria who sacrificed herself to save Shadow. One thing that I noticed is that Shadow didn't fight back when he was attacked by G.U.N on the ARK, he just tried to escape with Maria. My interpretation is that Gerard programmed him to be obedient and submissive to G.U.N.). Captured again, he was put in cryostasis. Before being killed, Gerald manages to reprogram Shadow to carry a purpose of revenge, twisting his mind. Yet the core of his personality remain the same, he saves Rouge twice, once not even knowing who she is due to amnesia (Sonic Heroes). Shadow had suicidal thoughs, he wanted to destroy the whole planet while taking also his own life.
Thanks to Amy he reveals his true (and better) colours. Shadow is a brave, selfless yet quiet guy that keeps a low profile, at first glance he may seem timid but is just cautious. When needed he shows a unsuspected boldness and he is not afraid to speak his mind, yet he has very hard time talking about how he feels, shutting off, stopping to talk when stressed. Early Shadow is not always serious. Sometimes he is a fun guy. When around Sonic or Rouge, or when there is a good challenge, he can be playful, mischievous and cocky, talking almost like Sonic, even using his same catchprhrases. He is very stubborn and never gives up, it doesn't matter what.
Tumblr media
Shadow lighting the mood.
He is usually sad, melancholic and very lonely, not only because of his past but also because his future and because he is and will always be an outcast. He is a immortal being, halfway between a fully living, organic creature and an android (he is made of flesh and blood and has a heart but his mind and personality is programmable like the one of a computer) and not as confident as he may seem. He suffers from amnesia and PTSD, and this often leaves him confused and doubtful about himself. A misconception is about himself referring as the 'ultimate lifeform' as a badget of superiority, while he often just refers himself either as 'Shadow the hedgehog' or simply 'Shadow' to remember himself that he is also a person and as such he is worthy, too. Since he was meant to die, the sides of his personality are very compressed and complete in Sonic Adventure 2 and remain consistent in Heroes and 06, changing just that bit, according to the nature and the atmosphere of the games, showing that this version of Shadow is very flexible.
Tumblr media
At least in SA2 it was shown he could be a good friend to Sonic. With this spontaneous gesture.
Shadow is left handed. I've read somewhere that he was meant to be Sonic twin and he looks identical to him, a full mirror image, just with different colours and quillstyle. SA2 originally was meant to reveal also Sonic's past. However I don't know if is just a rumor or if that there was this idea around.
X/'05 Shadow
Tumblr media
Compared to Adventure/Heroes/06, this Shadow is more bold, moody and violent and way less cautious, often taking decision and acting instead of first watching, pondering and then moving like in early videogames. He is more mysterious than early Shadow from videogames. Even to himself. Not my cup of tea, he is too harsh, but he is perfect for those who love anti-heroes. He has the Jessica Fletcher/Conan Edogawa curse, those close to him always die, like Molly. poor thing. The scenes where he suffers the consequences of his PTSD and amnesia are graphic. Oh yes!
Tumblr media
Amnesia. Shadow collapsing in pain.
Tumblr media
PTSD. He went blank and froze, unable to do anything.
Edgelord(late '00s and '10s)/IDW Shadow
Tumblr media
The most awful and unfortunately the most long lived and well know incarnation, this is cemented in all sonic fans. I think of this Shadow a literally anti-Mary Sue. If Mary Sues are those ultra perfect characters, devoid of flaws, loved by everybody and that are always right, anti Mary-Sues are the opposite, character with no redeeming qualities that are troublemakers. And edgelord Shadow can be a great troublemaker at times. I can't see how we got there, or maybe I do. They flanderized the flaws of X Shadow and twisted his good trait. This Shadow is selfish, extremely arrogant, grumpy, short tempered, sometimes blinded by his own ego (zombie arc docet). Whatever he does is just for his personal benefit and nothing else and his dialectic is foreseeable. Team Dark is gone, no relationship of any nature with Rouge and While IDW Shadow is shown to have a soft spot for the chao, in other incarnations of the same period is shown to mistreat them. I may continue but is all bad things, it gets boring.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Archie/Universe Shadow
Tumblr media
He is based on Adventure/Heroes/06 Shadow but he is... warmer? More talkative (but still quiet) and slightly more open, also more bold. He doesn't go mute when stressed though he has a tendency to retreat somewhere and brood when upset. This Shadow seems a sort of perfectionist, he hates failures and put himself under a lot of pressure. Overall a softer version of X Shadow. I must say, at the start i believed this Shadow was just a melancholic Sonic. When I played SA2 first I liked Shadow and his refreshing personality, but in later '00 he started to become less and less likeable. I forgot his original personality. Rewatching cutscenes from Adventure 2, Heroes and 06, I remembered why I used to like Shadow and I realized how Archie Shadow made sense.
Chousoku Shadow
Tumblr media
I said things in Japan can be crazier than you think, for this I'll mention this outlandish version. Dash and Spin chousoku Sonic is a light hearted comic and Shadow is part of it. This Shadow is quite arrogant, slightly grumpy at the start and a bit aloof but overall is harmless and carefree. The funniest part is when Sonic and his friend make a horror movie (they tease Eggman while doing so). Guess who Shadow plays? The Grim Reaper. Suits him.
tMoStH Shadow
Tumblr media
The context is Amy's birthday and it happens on a luxury train. I guess the right place to fix him smootly, if they will actually do that. In fact, this Shadow start out to be close to the edgelord we are used to. You (you play as Barry the quokka, a deliberately generic character that can be whathever you want). According to you, Shadow is frightening. He quickly gets extremely mysterious with his strange requests and his tendencies to avoid you and other characters. Things take a U turn when you and tails manage to make him speak. He is acting this way to prepare a birthday surprise to Amy but you ruin his plans, when this happens he appear resigned and won't get angry at you. After this, you start to realize he is having fun too and that he actually like this place, although he is not too open about this.
Tumblr media
Prime Shadow
Tumblr media
After years of unbalanced edgelord, we got a more well balanced Shadow. To describle how Shadow fells there to me, I can quote this:
"Where there is light, there must be shadow, where there is shadow there must be light. There is no shadow without light and no light without shadow... Haruki Murakami
This Shadow has some mystical aura around him. He is a living being and real, but when he start to follow Sonic, maybe also for his condition of being a paradox person (even more than Sonic since he can't travel among the shatterspace), he seems halfway between a spirit and a living being, as you except he might suddenly disappear bacause of his elusiveness. He is overall social withdrawn and wary, excepting people might harm him later, competitive, a bit playful and mischievous at times, but he takes things very seriously, is higly focused in his tasks and tries to keep Sonic focused too.
Whatever version you like, one thing I know is when describling a character for your story, original or fanfiction, try to feel, rather than take characters traits as single to describle them. This is helpful especially with character like Shadow (I won't trust those who say 'Shadow is easy to move'. he is not. But is true to all character.
Personality traits are ingredients of a bigger... mmmh... cake? Alone sugar tastes like sugar, milk tastes like milk, egg yolk tastes like egg yolk, but cooked togheter the result tastes like the cake you meant to get. I guess you can put Shadow in whathever situation you like and then ask yourself: 'If I was him there, what would I do?'. Don't think to Shadow as sad, as loner or whathever. Feel it. he will be perceived as real to your reader. Remember it will still be influenced by your experiences and outlook (is exactly for this we see all those inconsistencies on Sonic characters), but as long as you don't use your favourite character as your vessel, things should turn fine.
Youtube analisis are helpful to wrap your head if you have some doubts
My personal favourite is the early Shadow. For light hearted content I'll go more to Prime Shadow or tMoStH Shadow (I like prime Shadow more). If you want to go dark, you're safe with X Shadow. I would avoid Edgelord Shadow (although is the most popular) and Chousoku Shadow alltogheter.

Thus: Margaret Thatcher’s dictum, “There is no alternative,” a polite way of saying “Resistance is futile,” or, “Abandon hope all ye who enter here.” This is inevitabilism, the belief that nothing can change. It’s the opposite of science fiction. As a science fiction writer, my job is to imagine alternatives. “There is no alternative” is a demand pretending to be an observation: “stop trying to think of an alternative.” At its best, science fiction demands that we look beyond what a gadget does and interrogate who it does it for and who it does it to. That’s an important exercise, maybe the important exercise. It’s the method by which we seize the means of computation for the betterment of the human race, not the immortal, rapacious colony organisms we call “limited liability companies,” to whom we represent inconvenient gut-flora, and which are rendering the only planet in the universe capable of sustaining human life unfit for human habitation.

Dr. Kujo I am so happy thank you for answering, I love sea creatures so much but jellyfish are my favourite, the immortality thing is so cool there must be some old ass jellyfish, what about sea slugs i love them they're adorable :D
Seaslugs are nice, too
The Opalescent sea slug eats jellyfish tenticles and uses the stingers for its own protection
The Blue Dragon sea slug does this too, but usually with the Portuguese man-o-war.
The Portuguese man-o-war isn't a jellyfish at all. It's actually a colonial animal made up of thousands of individual organisms. -Jotaro

Yall know how much I love creating OCs who hide true aspects of themselves behind socially-acceptable masks. Defense mechanisms to hide their vulnerable hearts from a cruel world. Kallian Tabris and her immense love for her family, hidden behind a shell of rage and and violence. Zoe Bhatia's lonely heartbroken soul, hidden under a fortress of cold self-imposed isolation. The lisp Iona has because of her fangs, only revealed to Arueshalae.
I've circled around this topic in recent weeks with all my text posting about Sarit Ramesh. But I guess my brain finally put all the dots together. Sarit does not just want to redefine the nature of humanity by blending man and machine together. She's not just pushing science forward and propelling humanity toward a new evolution.
At her core, she's a scared, sick little girl who spent most of her childhood in bed. Her chest on fire from the damaged lungs inside her body failing to do their job properly. Sarit has faced mortality more times than some colony war veterans, fighting against her own damaged organs. It's no wonder she wants to rip so many of them out and replace them with perfect, immortal machines.
Also losing my mind because Andreja immediately sees through the bluster and nonsense science talk. She knows people well enough to see the terror behind Sarit's eyes, and the looming, gnawing anxiety that informs Sarit's every decision. But instead of offering knowledge and material resources for Sarit to pursue her interests, Andreja offers trust, faith and human connection. Things Sarit has always lacked.

more sketchy notes, this time on 4 winged Avii (or Tetra) compared to regular Avii they are a rare mutation that can happen randomly(at birth, Uri'el is a special case as the sword was supposed to act as emergency measure and iwas able turn any Avii or human with enough magic power to survive into one) every 200/300 years, Tetras have such long lifespans that are believed to be immortal. While all Avii are proficient in magic Tetras arethe ones who are most conected and attuned with the flux and that's why they end up getting important roles in the Avii society as leaders and high priests, since they are so powerful and their lifespan is so long, everytime a new tetra is born and has reached adulthood the previous ruling one will "hybernate" in a crystal coffin (in ancient times they were sacrificed but it's deemed unethical now), random fact all Tetras have naturally golden colored talons and their blood turns gold when interacting with magic. All Avii have an enhanced color vision and are able to see more colors than humans, but less than an actual bird, they also can clearly see spells emitting a faint glow even when they are not visible to the naked eye, ability that helped building their skills as intricate spell crafters While it's hard to distinguish a female Avii from a male Avii aside some specific subspecies cases who display sexual dismorphism, for Tetras the line is even blurrier as they phisically have characteristics of both, some may display more masculine or more feminine features(down there) but they are both always present, despite presenting both elements they are always infertile as many cases of mutations in nature, their female organs tho will produce an egg every 50 years of so after reaching maturity, since keeping track of time is trivial for them some Tetras use that as a way to calculate time.."oh! won't you look at that! another 50 years have passed" WARNING non canonical cross species breeding content following
In the siren AU a dew colonies of Avii and theirs leaders escaped from the war to some remote islands in the kingdom of sea together with humans, living together for centuries they found out that while Tetras couldn't have fertile eggs with Avii they could with humans and viceversa giving birth to Sirens , humans were able to as the most adabtable species (it would not have been possible with a padoor and an avii but it could with an human and a padoor as well),the women bearing siren children tho would often sustain injuries or even lose their lives cause of the partially developped talons of the children as they are unable to create eggs making the male partner x tetra the most successful in the increase of the siren population, avii are technically able to generate sirens too but the chances are lower than with a tetra

🚨 Joint Statement:
Palestine, an indivisible land for an indivisible people.
Today marks the 48th anniversary of Land Day, immortalizing a battle that continues to form the core of the struggle in occupied Palestine. The land remains the title of the Palestinian people's battles since the inception of the zionist project as an advanced tool for global imperialism to seize the region's resources and quash its aspirations for liberation and independence.
This year's anniversary coincides with the brutal genocide war ongoing for about six months against the backdrop of the heroic "Al-Aqsa Flood" operation organized by the brave Palestinian resistance.
The parties and organizations signing below:
- Commemorate Land Day, united in the streets, squares, and arenas with all peoples and free forces opposing imperialism, zionism, and colonialism.
- Salute the Palestinian people and their brave resistance, especially the armed resistance as a legitimate and just revolutionary response.
- Salute the armed resistance in Lebanon, Iraq, and Yemen for supporting the Palestinian resistance and all the free people of the world who have exposed the essence of zionism as a racist colonial ideology.
- Consider that the land was and still is the core of the conflict, which can only be resolved by liberating the land, all the land, from the sea to the river, returning all refugees, and establishing a secular democratic state with Al-Quds as its capital on the entire Palestinian territory.
- Renew their condemnation of the shameful complicity of the Arab regimes, agents of zionism and imperialism, especially the normalization regimes that fly the flag of the occupation entity in their capitals, suppress the free by arresting them (Jordan, Bahrain), fabricating cases against them and prosecuting them (Morocco), or assaulting them in the streets (Egypt). In this regard, they stand in solidarity with all activists and free individuals, women and men, victims of oppression and tyranny.
- Urge all progressive forces in the region and the world to double their efforts to support the Palestinian people and their brave resistance, boycott the occupation entity, expose its crimes of genocide, starvation, land theft, and violation of human dignity across occupied Palestine, in Gaza, the West Bank, and the occupied interior, and escalate mobilization for the immediate cessation of aggression, opening of crossings, and delivery of aid.
Honor to the resistance
Glory to the martyrs
Victory to Palestine
