I’m not sure if there’s any fandom I completely regret exploring: even while some have had (big) problems, they all have brought new, positive things into my life. Friends, experiences, even my job I partly got due to my involvement in a fandom!

I will say though, as far as the RPC goes: I’ve had the most issues in the Harry Potter and Danganronpa fandoms. I choose not to do anything with the former and I tend to be more selective about the latter.

But they’ve got nothing on Outlander and other historical drama fandoms. Mostly because it disappoints me so much to see people old enough to be my parents (and in some cases, grandparents) start in on fandom drama or just prove how racist, anti-LGBTQ, and/or fatphobic they are. If you don’t like the overall fandom preferences? You’re an absolute monster. I made the mistake of mentioning in an Outlander fandom space that I prefer Roger Wakefield MacKenzie instead of Jamie Fraser and you’d think I killed their firstborn children.

Where other dramas are concerned: it is appalling how many fans are so against people of color, size, and LGBTQ relationships in their dramas/adaptations. I’ve seen shows get petitions sent demanding that they cast white actors in roles given to people of color (hi Sanditon! Bridgerton too). I’ve seen fans complain that, instead of the traditionally pretty/svelte love interest, a show is choosing to explore one character’s sexuality and shelve their story as main plot for a season and instead, focus on another couple with a larger/plump/insert not skinny female lead here (hi Bridgerton!). For my friends in these fandom spaces who identify as minorities, they can be a rough place to be. I blame the fact that a lot of fans in these spaces are older and not as open-minded, which is why I think it’s important to invite and welcome in younger fans with new ideas and voices. And dear lord: Do not gatekeep the romance series you started in the 90s/early 2000s and then insist millennial/Gen Z fans aren’t real fans.

They are. You’re just pissed that your fandom is now popular.

Don’t get me started on cosplay/costuming, especially after social media/patreon/onlyfans/guests at cons/influencers became a thing

Jamie hides her face in her hands, whispering something like a desperate prayer to herself:

“Right?” she has whispers, voice breaking, “right?”

Lily’s voice reaches her before she starts crying,

“Jamie, Sirius is awake!”

“Yeah, I just had word from Remus. We can go see Sirius in the morning,” Lily answers.

“Oh, thank Merlin,” Jamie manages, relief in every word.

“Come on, love,” Lily says, holding out a hand, “we gotta clean those wounds, and get you to bed.”

“Alright,” Jamie mumbles, stumbling after Lily into the kitchen, exhaustion hitting her hard as the adrenaline leaves.
